Polycleitos   (Argos, 5th c BC)
_
Diadumenos (diadem-bearer) / Youth Tying a Headband. The Athens example, copy of bronze original ca. 420 BC. Marble: 1.95 m H. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Winner of an athletic contest, lifting his arms to knot the diadem. The figure stands in contrapposto. “The thorax and pelvis of the Diadumenos tilt in opposite directions, setting up rhythmic contrasts in the torso that create an impression of organic vitality. The position of the feet poised between standing and walking give a sense of potential movement. This rigorously calculated pose, found in almost all works attributed to Polykleitos, became a standard formula used in Greco-Roman and, later, western European art."
Doryphoros (spear-bearer). Rendered somewhat above life-size: 2.12 m (6 feet 11 inches), the lost bronze original of the work would have been cast circa 440 BC, but it is today known only from later (mainly Roman period) marble copies.

I'm obsessed with this fresco in Pompeii. I would die for walls like this (though with a blue background).
[Source: @blueiskewl Original post is here].
Similar vibes to this beauty at the Villa Ariana:

I really must do something with my own walls.

Hello!
If you’re new here, welcome! You can call me Jenn. This is my personal and fandom blog.
What am I fan of and what will you see here? Well.
In no particular order:
Music posting. I love the Black Keys and Pink Floyd and heaps of other bands across multiple genres.
Fanworks related to my fave videos games such as Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, Ghost of Tsushima, Stardew Valley, Spiritfarer, and all the Supergiant Games games;
Minecraft posting - I spend too much time playing it (I’m a builder-explorer) and am unfortunately addicted to Hermitcraft and certain other associated YouTubers;
Ancient History, especially Spartan history (not the pop version, don’t get me started) though I post most of the stuff related to this elsewhere.
Art (fine art to amateur and everything in between) and photography, especially landscapes flowers and light.
Talking about mental health and meditation.
Poetry and literature (english major) and writing (creative writing major). I’m a published author, I write a lot, and I like to talk about it. It can’t be helped.
I avoid any and all discourse. I’m not here to wallow in misery over the state of the world or politics or fandom bitching or anything of that kind - there’s quite enough difficulty in my real life without seeking that out online. I’m highly defensive of my peace. I will block without batting an eyelid if necessary.
I have side blogs to keep my creative work (visual art and writing) and history stuff seperate to the - well, red hot mess I have going on here 😆 You can find a list below the cut.
Toodle-pip!
PS. My asks are always open. Feel free to talk to me 😊 I like tag games too, so feel free to tag me if you want 🤍
@jpdoingart where I post all my (mostly digital) art, both fanart and original.
@jpdoingwords. My writing blog for both fanfic and original fiction.
@jpdoingvp where (when I remember) I post some of my virtual (gaming) photography
@the-good-spartan for Ancient Greek history, mainly focussed on Sparta
@domusplautii focussed on Ancient Roman History.
@ancientprettythings dedicated to Greek & Roman Antiquities with a handful of other cultures thrown in.

The apse at Vila San Marco, Castellammare di Stabia.
I had always heard about the Roman fondness for apsidal rooms - this is the only example I have seen in real life.
The bottom picture shows the window of the apse on the right; this is the ‘courtyard’ it looks out onto - though this was surely only a lightwell, not a functional space. The windows on the left are a long hallway.
