Some solid episodes today. I really enjoyed them! Am I still annoyed that Echo is still stuck as someone to be name dropped but not actually put in the episode? Yes. But these were some strong episodes.

This is something I’ve been wanting to talk about for a long time, but I wrote this out now thanks to @righteousinadversity’s post about the Yiling Laozu not being the Mr. Hyde to WWX’s Dr. Jekyll. I was going to add on to that one, but this felt like enough of a tangent that it should be its own post. Still, thanks to Sreya for inspiring me to finally get this off my chest.

The conflation of WWX’s Yiling Laozu era with his use of guidao is one of my biggest pet peeves in this fandom, because it ultimately buys into cultivation world propaganda about WWX and therefore feels like it misses the entire point of the novel.

Like, first there are the factual inaccuracies -- WWX does not even get the title until he’s living in the Burial Mounds with the Wens. No one actually knows that he learned his new cultivation in the Burial Mounds at this point. He just tells JC he was in “a hell of a place” when he returns, and JC didn’t even know what he meant because he asked him if it was Qishan or Nightless City. For the entire war, no one has any reason to associate WWX with Yiling.

This means that in the beginning, it’s not his use of guidao that gets him his title. The conflation of the two becomes a thing later and is used to demonize (literally, since the designation of “modao” came from the cultivation world, not WWX) the cultivation path he created.

The whole structure of the novel is in fact used to undermine the “Yiling Laozu is WWX’s evil alter ego” narrative. The effect of having those interwoven flashbacks is to first present the dominant narrative and then undermine that narrative by showing what really happened. The whole conceit of the structure is pretty much destroyed if readers’ ultimate conclusion is that actually, the dominant narrative is right. We are not supposed to read the flashbacks and decide that yeah, the Yiling Laozu was in fact evil.

We are supposed to read hundreds of thousands of words of people calling the Yiling Laozu evil...and then finding out he earned that title as a protector. His title actually came not from use of his cultivation during the war, however scary he was, but from protecting a bunch of people on a mountain.

People in fandom taking “Evil Yiling Laozu” at face value feels like them taking the title of the novel at face value. People may call WWX the “grandmaster of demonic cultivation/modao zushi,” but using that as the novel’s title is ironic, used to highlight the disconnect between the presentation and the reality.

The “Evil Yiling Laozu” narrative is cultivation world propaganda, and I am continually tired of how much anti-WWX cultivation world propaganda the fandom continually buys into.

I'd honestly really love to see Lucy do a long term UC op (I know it's probably not realistic for this season bc the season is so short), and have the character arc of her realising that it's not really for her? Like don't get me wrong, I love badass Lucy Chen UC operative, but she's a homebody. She loves her people and loves quality time with them, and she's kind and generous and wants to help people, and having the grasp of her character that we do from 5 seasons, I feel confident in saying that UC will slowly but unreversably change her personality, and that would be such a shame. Because remaining soft and caring in a world that's treated you to such horrors is her superpower. It's not pretending to be someone she's not. It's being exactly who she is, despite everything that's happened to her.

no i refuse to have all my entertainment and tools in my phone. i refuse to live in a small apartment surrounded by minimalist decor and nothing to look at or work with or use, with empty bookshelves and sterile-looking surroundings. i refuse to sit there idle during a power-out on my sofa in the dim candlelight without anything to do or lost in the woods without a physical compass, emergency whistle, kinetic-generator flashlight or any idea of how to do anything survival-based, watching as my phone battery dies and the clock inevitably ticks down until i'm as isolated and helpless as i could be. my phone and all its compact functions, though an invaluable tool in itself if used properly during ideal conditions, i regard as a second-hand backup for other primary tools, used only when i have no other option or when things actually break. sorry for the rant lmfao but i've been thinking a lot about these things and how reliant on one single rectangular piece of often internet-reliant technology i'm becoming.
