S2 ep 2
1. Good God, they are 16 and basically watching a snuff movie of their friend. Yikes! You know, the ones who survive will need lifelong therapy!
Tumblr media
2. And Ivan is back to being a jerk to Maria. Whenever he’s hurt, he lashes out. I do love that as loving as she is, she does not let him get away with disrespectful behavior.
Tumblr media
3. Oh, Caro Caro Caro. Any time she acts self-righteous Ivan is not responding with smiles and happiness to her, I want to go “girl, your boyfriend saw you sucking face with someone else and you still insist to his face you have nothing to say, what do you think is gonna happen?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. It strikes me what a horrifying dissonance this is - Ivan is terrified to call his father and to talk to him - he has to nerve himself and is breathing like he’s having a panic attack.
Tumblr media
But at the same time he desperately wants this man’s love and attention - his condition for lying about whether his father abused his ex is a chance to live with the man! It’s hell but it’s all he knows and has. To live with the man who broke his arm and beat the hell out of him regularly, who he saw abuse at least one gf. Everyone can tell Noiret does not love him and does not care - even Caro can and she has the emotional intelligence of a plank - but Ivan cannot because to him that would mean he is so utterly unlovable his mother killed herself rather than stay and protect him from his father and his own father cannot love him. And so Noiret lies and says yes and then says “but we have to go to soccer every Sunday” and Ivan, despite his “if you hit me again, I will report you” lights up - that is why he can’t really win against Noiret for so long - he can’t win because he cares and Noiret does not. He falls into the same trap over and over again. He is eventually able to give on the man but it’s because at that point he has Maria and later Julia and so can tell what genuine love directed at him feels like, because he actually has someone to love him, and because he’s given a reason for things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. It’s clear Caro is into Marcos for his impressive conversational ability...side note: It’s pretty telling that when they are all at risk of expulsion, Marcos is solely concerned about staying with Paula. As he should, she is 5 and she’s all he has, but once again a warning Caro ignores that she will never come first to him. For good reasons but that won’t make it any better (in a lot of ways, he is very much like Hector.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. People in this show were big on clothing optional in general...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My brain has been rotted by danmei :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Ivan, right before testifying, overhears Elsa about to transfer his docs to another boarding school and realizes Noiret lied yet again and has no intention of being a family and so tells the truth. And whoa, I forgot how bad it was - the way Ivan’s recitation is just a catalogue of horrors - Noiret breaking his gf’s jaw for joking, breaking her ribs for a swimsuit etc - and that is only what he did in front of his son who he doesn’t see much, so who knows what else went on (and the way Ivan says he hid under the bed - and it strikes me this is all deeply psychological scarring because Ivan is not exactly physically much smaller than Noiret - he could give him a good fight; but because this is how he’s been brought up since childhood, he is emotionally trapped in feeling helpless and so he doesn’t even think of giving him a fight.) And then the judge asks him if his father beat him and he says “many times” and this is the man whose love he wanted oooof!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Daddy, you are going to jail! Alas, not for long!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Maria trusting Hector with the truth. She has rock solid people instincts. In many ways, Hector was the moral center of this show.

thinking about how sometimes people really need to call Elsa on her shit. like yes, a lot of what she pulls is trauma-informed but it doesn’t excuse the fact that she can deliberately force people away in harmful ways.
just a general note that your characters in general likely have valid reason to call her out on occasion. just because it’s a defensive habit for her doesn’t mean it’s justified.

I'm sorry brother:
Tumblr media
Summary; Hans' favorite and kindest brother's letters to him over time.
Dear Hans,
Why little brother? Why did you do it? Why did you have to go and try and steal Arendelle's throne? Why did you try to kill Queen Elsa and her sister? You were supposed to be better than that! Better than our brothers. Better than Father! But instead you went and committed several atrocities and for what?! A silly little crown that you didn't even need! You didn't need a crown to be great! You were already great! So tell me, why did you do it? What happened to you? This isn't who you are. Who you were. What happened to that sweet little boy who I used to read to and tuck into bed? What happened to the little boy who use to hide behind my legs at balls and council meetings? To the little boy who cried whenever a horse got hurt? How did he become this, this monster? Tell me. Tell me! Maybe I can help you. Maybe I can convince father or Caleb to give you a lesser sentence or get mother to talk him into it. Maybe I can save you a lesser sentence if you just tell me -- if you give me a good reason to do so. Please . Please give me a good reason. Please tell me...
Was it worth it?
Sincerely, your brother, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I know you got my last letter. You can't pretend that you get it. You can't ignore this-- ignore me. I'm the only one trying to help you out right now. The least you can do it work with me here! Caleb wants to have you whipped! And we BOTH know father will allow it if we don't come up with a good enough reason in his eyes. So. Talk. To. Me.
--sincerely, your very tired brother, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
Little brother, father and are brothers are getting very very impatient waiting for your response. And you know how they get when they're impatient. So please, for your safety, please respond. I need something to tell them because I fear that they might kill you this time. And we both know that we are the weakest and that they are strong, violent, and stubborn. So please, for the love of God. Just answer. I can't stand hearing what they're planning for you anymore. I haven't seen them this angry since the twins ran away when you were 15. And you remember what happened then. I'm trying to help you, not harm you. So, please respond.
Sincerely your very scared, exhausted, and annoyed OLDER brother, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I'm sorry. God I'm sorry. I understand now. I met the Queen and her sister and the changeling her sister is courting. They told me about the Trolls. I can't believe the former king and Queen of Auardon trusted bloody Trolls! Everyone knows they can't be trusted! They even told me that the changeling took Princess Anna to the Trolls so that they could help. Of all the idiotic, ridiculous ideas-- EVERYONE KNOWS that the Trolls are selfish creatures who don't think about what others want. They're short sighted. They must have done this to you. It would explain your sudden change in behavior and your recent action. Why you haven't responded to my letters and why you tried to kill Queen Elsa and her sister when you've always blanched at the thought of unnecessary violence before. Our men said your personality shifted after you returned from your failed attempt at capturing and convincing the Queen to thaw out Auardon. Don't worry brother, I'll get you out of this. Even if you can never step foot in Auardon again-- even if they'll never believe that your innocent-- I'll get you out of this. I'll clear your name and rid you of this curse. I promise.
--Sincerely, Your very relieved brother, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I have some good news for once. Father and the others aren't angry at you anymore. Well, not completely. They're still angry that you were 'weak' enough to get cursed in the first place, but the punishment they're gonna give you is alot more lenient and merciful by their standards. It's even strangely kind considering that they know you love horses. You're going to be mucking out the stables and caring for the horses for the next few years. The Arendellen people aren't pleased in the slightest but I can't find it in myself to care. Not when you're safe from the creative punishments our family was gonna put you through. Not when I know you're innocently and that their royal family is at fault for you being cursed. God, I wish I never volunteered you to go there. Or that I at least had gone with you. I'm sorry little brother, I'm sorry. I'll never let anyone hurt you again.
Sincerely, Lars.
P.s. Lottie says you can move into our wing of the castle. You've always been her favorite, so it's not that surprising. She and the kids miss you alot. We await your arrival eagerly. Stay safe.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I'm sorry. We tried to stop Auardon from taking you. We did. We tried. Ottis even punched one of them-- OTTIS-- and Esmery cursed them out! But they wouldn't listen to reason. We tried to tell them that you were cursed and that it was the Trolls fault and that they could check, but they didn't listen. I don't even think they cared. Arendelle has never believed us so they weren't any help but we aren't gonna let that stop us. I promise. We'll get you out of there. In the meantime, the twins (I heard they're going by the Stabbington brothers now) have agreed to watch out for you over there. Yeah, they're going to the isle too, though the heroes of their story protested against it since they've apparently become friends now. We're gonna try and get them out too but right now you're the priority since you'll probably die over there with you immune system.
Sincerely, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
There's a secret group of people who are against the isle now. I believe you know one of them. Her name's Anastasia Tremaine. Your new wife's sister. Congrats on the marriage by the way. I'm sorry I couldn't attend. Ottis, Esmery, their wives, Lottie, and I tried once we got your invite but Beast wouldn't allow it. God, I hate that smug son of a bitch so much. I wish I could punch him in his stupid smug face like he deserves. He reminds me of father too much. I pray that he never has children, don't you? Well, I have to go, father's calling and I have a meeting with Anastasia and the others in an hour, but I promise I'll write again soon. Tell the twins I miss them and will see them soon. I hate this one letter per bouage shit. I wish I could send more than that. Be good to your wife and stay safe-- all of you. Don't let the twins push you around too much. Love you.
Sincerely, Lars.
P.s. Lottie had another baby and Father's sick.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
Father's finally croaked and Caleb is king now. Not much has really changed except that the punishments against children are less harsh now. And the punishments against child abusers are harder now. I think he feels gulity. Not that he'd admit it. The younger kids keep asking where you went. I don't know what to tell them. How can one explain such a horrid idea to children who have been raised to think that the world is fair? I wish you were hear. You'd know how to sooth them... they're still rounding up villians, you know? Not even big villians either. They're rounding up henchmen and petty thieves now too. What is the world coming to? I'm starting to see why you stopped seeing the good in things, little brother. Have you always felt this empty and disappointed? I can see why it was easy for the Trolls to corrupt you if you have. I probably would have crumbled under their spell, too, if I had felt like this as you did when they attacked you and our men. I'm sorry it took so long for me to see it.
Sincerely, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
We got your letter. Tell the twins we said congrats on the new babies. What was it they named them? Cormac and Iggy? What odd names. Did they choose them for sentimental reasons or did they like the meaning? And how are you? How's Drizella? How's the pregnancy going? Anastasia's is going great. She and Jacob are thinking of naming it after her father. I'm not sure which father she's thinking about since she had two, but I still think it's nice. Also,Lottie wants to name ours after you. Is it okay if we do so? It's okay if you say no. Stay safe and write again soon.
Sincerely Lars and Lottie.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
Little Hans jr has arrived in the world and can't wait to meet you. Little Anthony has also arrived in the world and can't wait to meet you and Drizella, and his granny. He and your namesake seem to get along great already. I'm sure they're gonna be the best of friends? When's Drizella's due date? The others and I are planning on sending more baby stuff over for you and the twins. Even Caleb! I really think everything's gonna be okay between us all after we get you guys out of there!
Sincerely, Lars and Lottie.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
*5 years later*
Oh god Hans, They took Anastasia and her children away. They up and took her. Even though she was didn't even commit any crimes other than being mean to her stepsister under her sister and mother's duress. They took 3 innocent children to the isle. Away from their father. Jacob's distraught. Ella's distraught. Kit's distraught. They took Kit's brother, James, away too. They aren't listening to us. We don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. This is fucked. How am I supposed to fix this? I don't know if I can fix this. I'm starting to think they're serious about never letting another crime occur here in Auardon and about never letting you out. What am I supposed to do?
Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
*12 years later *
Dear Little brother,
Please answer me. I'm sorry for whatever I did to make you angry. It must have been bad because the twins and Ana aren't responding to me either. I don't know what I did. Please tell me. I want to make it right. I'll do anything to make it right. Please. Please just answer me.
Yours truly,Lars.
P.s. Lottie's pissed.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I saw your youngest on the news today. Why didn't you tell me she was coming to Auardon? I know you've been angry at me these past two years but isn't this a little obsessive? I mean, the silent treatment is painful enough but you not even bothering to tell me that one of children-- a 9 year old at that-- was coming to Auardon is just a low blow. I could have been there to greet her! Lottie's really upset. She even cried about it. I can't remember the last time I saw her cry. Also, what on earth have you been feeding her? She looks so thin. She's smaller than you were! She and Lina and the others are gonna send her and her friends some care packages. Why are are all so thin? Are you that thin again? I think I might go pay her a visit as well. The kids all really want to meet their cousin. The fact that they have so many cousins that they haven't even met yet-- girl ones at that-- is driving them up the wall. You know how they are. But yeah. You really gotta stop with the silent treatment. Especially now that the kids can actually meet eachother.
Sincerely, Lars.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Dear Hans,
I met Dizzy in person today. She's so beautiful. And sweet when she stopped being angry. She's alot like you were before the whole troll debacle. She told me what happened. It sounds like she didn't know that we knew and tried to fix it. She knows which ones didn't try and fix it for sure though. I think she inherited Anastasia's temper somehow. She was so bitter and angry.i can't say I blame her. I'm sorry brother. I'm sorry we didn't do more. And I'm sorry that I've spent the last two years hating you for ignoring me when you weren't. I'm sorry I couldn't take care of her and Anthony. I'm sorry I couldn't save you and the kids. And Ana and Rudi and Runo. I'm sorry that I didn't know you were dead. I'll try and make up for it now but I don't think I can. But We all miss you and we're all gonna try and do the right thing. I hope you caught a break in the afterlife, at least. I hope you've found the peace you'll always deserved. I think this is the last letter I'm gonna right to you. From now on, when I want to talk, I'm just go and visit your grave like I should have been doing these past two years.
Goodbye little brother.
P.s. it's Lars if you didn't know and you'll all be getting a proper funeral and proper gravestones.
(Yes Tiana's friend married Lars. Cause I said so. My friend @eahravinqueen gave me the idea)

Tumblr media
god, you love vegas.
there’s a certain sort of dirty glamour that you can’t find anywhere else, you think-- and while you spend the majority of your time in new york these days, you find that your heart always has a certain tug to las vegas. after all, it is where you got your start as one of the finest pickpockets and swindlers on either side of the mississippi.
among other things.
it’s where you met james buchanan barnes for the first time.
you’d heard his name like a whisper in the wind for years before you met him in person. james “bucky” barnes, criminal extraordinaire. of course, you were young, and you had stars in your eyes and you had not yet been hardened by the world. you had not yet had to kill your way out of a shady job, had not yet conned a man of everything he was worth.
that was your favorite part, you think.
taking from men what they had earned unfairly.
if justice wasn’t coming for them, you would bring it upon them yourself. you would take it all and you would feel no remorse. their wealth, their assets, their connections.
sometimes, even their wives.
but those were petty games that you had played when you were young. you like to believe that you are more mature now; both in your swindling and in your personality.
sometimes, you miss those days. you miss running with natasha and chewing up men and spitting them back out. you miss the high of pulling off a real good job. you miss watching a man crumble beneath you, begging for mercy. of course, you would never give it. but you would make a show of thinking about it, and natasha would laugh, and she would say, “stop playing with your food, honey.”
that’s another thing.
you rarely reveal your real name.
not even to your closest confidants. not even to natasha.
no, you find that there are two ways that you introduce yourself. you either stare straight with a narrow gaze, murmuring something along the lines of, “your worst nightmare.” or, you smile sweetly with an outstretched hand and your head gracefully tilted. “call me honey.”
there’s only one person that you’ve worked with who knows your real name.
and he’s sitting at the hotel bar.
already, you can feel your annoyance begin to bubble. you can do one of two things-- you can saunter over there and properly ignore him, knowing that he will notice you instantly. or, you can go up to your room.
you decide you need a drink more than you need your sanity.
somehow, you’re sure that he already knows you’re here. you approach the bar and tap on it, smiling at the bartender. “cosmopolitan.” you turn your head to the right and he’s already looking at you.
“i thought you’d never show, doll.”
a smirk begins to play on your lips, and you thank the bartender as you slide your drink to yourself. “i should get a restraining order,” you muse as you lift your glass to your lips, taking a lengthy sip. “you creep.”
bucky laughs and he takes a sip of his own drink, and you don’t even have to look to know what it is-- whiskey coke. god, you always gave him shit for it. told him he should at least drink his whiskey neat. he would always give you that same stupid smirk and he would say, “what, i can’t have a little sweet, honey?”
“that’d be no fun,” he says and god you know that he’s right, but you hate to admit it. “who you here for?”
all the attempts of not looking at him are futile, and you throw a glance in his direction. he looks as glorious and handsome as ever. the man drips with luxury. from his suit to his hair to his beard which has grown out slightly since the last time that you saw him-- everything about him tells you that he is expensive. “you think i’d tell you?”
“i’m here for pleasure, darling. i’m not going to infiltrate on your job.”
you scoff. “i have a hard time believing that. when are you ever not thinking about work?”
bucky’s desire to work is the cause of all of his success, as well as all of his problems, you think.
part of you feels sorry for him, knowing how much stress he places upon himself. another part of you can’t help but resent it, knowing it is the reason that you two would never, ever, ever possibly work as something more than easy flirtation and a good night between the sheets.
“i’m a changed man, honey.” bucky gestures to the barstool beside him. “you gonna stand and drink that all night?”
a pointed look is thrown in his direction and you finally take a seat. “you knew i would be here, didn’t you?”
“heard from nat,” bucky takes a sip from his drink. “i’ve got some intel on your hit.”
your hit isn’t your normal vegas regular. no, your hit is alexander pierce, one of the highest ranking government officials you could sink your claws into. you’d met him networking at an event in dc and he had been quite interested in you, which you always liked to use to your advantage. luring him out to las vegas took little effort and much amusement, buying you time to do your research.
you’d clear his room of all his belongings and sell off the paperwork to your government contacts who would purchase them for a steep price, and you would be on your way.
without a trace.
you were good at that part. going off the grid. no social media footprint, nothing to track you by-- you were living in the world partially invisible. you like to keep it that way.
though, sometimes it gets lonely.
no one knows that better than the man who sits beside you now.
“spit it out, then.”
bucky smiles and for a moment, you think he might say something else, but he begins to divulge quickly. information about his security detail, shift rotations. information you could’ve found out easily, but don’t mind having handed to you. but you’re less interested in that. your brows furrow as you look at him. “how far out of your way did you go to get this intel?”
he gives a nonchalant shrug. “far enough.” he smiles. “gotta help out my girl.”
“i’m not your girl,” you say with a smirk. “if anything, you’re my bitch. getting me intel, following me around to tell me.”
this gets a laugh out of him and you look forward again, finishing off your drink. “now that’s my girl.” he throws a hundred dollar bill onto the bartop and follows suit, tipping his head back to empty his cup of its contents. “walk with me?”
you stare and watch as he outstretches his hand to you. despite your better judgement, you take it. the pair of you walk side by side until you’re stepping out into the still warm air, but the breeze offers enough of a chill that the hairs on your arms stand up. bucky looks over at you and begins to shuck off his jacket, making you immediately protest. “bucky, no--”
but he’s already draping it over your shoulders, and you are tugging it just a bit closer to you, and you note that it smells like him. like that stupid ysl cologne you bought him all those years ago.
well, you didn’t buy it. you’d stolen it.
no words are exchanged as you move along on the sidewalk, watching on at people busking and performing on the street, ignoring the elsa’s and spiderman’s who try to pull you in for photo ops. one of them gets particularly aggressive and bucky pulls you into him, as if you’re not a woman who has driven a dagger into the gut of a man for far less, saying, “move along, pal.”
“so touchy tonight,” you purr, leaning into him slightly when he doesn’t remove his arm from your waist. “like the good ‘ole days.”
“oh, you remember?” bucky jokes, and it already has you laughing. “you were acting so coy back there in the bar, i thought that you might’ve forgotten me altogether.”
you shake your head and you stop in the street. you wear his jacket and he straightens his tie and he smiles down at you. “of course i didn’t.” you jut your chin up. “doesn’t change anything, though.”
what doesn’t it change, exactly?
it doesn’t change that the last time you saw james buchanan barnes, you had told him that you loved him. and he had told you that he loved you in return. and you had both agreed that it needed to end now before either of you caused irreversible damage to the other.
criminals being with criminals never ends well.
“not a thing,” he agrees with you. he pushes a piece of hair back and it’s getting harder to remember why you were so stubborn when it came to him. why, exactly, you felt the need to push your feelings away so desperately. “wish it would, though.”
“yeah.” a small, almost shy, smile works its way onto your lips. “me too.”
bucky’s jaw slacks and his fingers trail your cheek, and you can feel the cool metal of his rings against your flesh. “it’s not like this with other people, is it, honey?”
“of course not,” you nearly hiss. “is it like this with other people for you?”
bucky has a knowing sort of smirk. “no.” he wets his lips, his eyes settling on your lips for just a beat too long. “it never will be.”
the tension surrounds the both of you, and you’re the one to break it. you press your hand to bucky’s chest and push on it slightly, pushing him away, pushing away all of the feelings and confusion that comes with him. “we’re not doing this tonight. i’ve got a job to do in the morning.”
you begin to walk, and bucky is on your heels. “so our pillowtalk can be about work,” he says, and you can practically hear the cocky and sly charm in his words. “i made sure to get a king bed. and a bottle of moet.”
again, you stop, and you turn to him. you’ve nearly walked a circle around the block, and you can see the hotel not far off. “you really got info from nat about my job, got me intel to butter me up, and then want to take me to bed?” you huff and even you can’t help but laugh. “nothing’s changed, barnes.”
you set off again and he groans, following after you. “you know it’s not like that.” he catches your wrist and he spins you, getting you to face him. “it’s never that that… simple with you.”
you rip your wrist from his hand and make your way into the hotel lobby, making sure your hips swing just a bit more than usual. you remember bucky laughing and gripping those hips on a late winter night in new york city, nearly three years ago now-- “such a tease,” he had said into your ear.
“bucky,” you say as you both approach the elevators. “it’s not happening.”
he sighs and he hangs his head. “yeah.” he looks up at you. “i do miss you, doll.”
“yeah, i know.” the elevator doors open and you step into them. bucky tries to follow after you, but you hold your hand up. “i’ll be seeing you, james.”
“see you, honey.”
the doors click shut and you practically collapse. the effort of pretending to not love bucky is exhausting.
in a blur, you go to your room and unpack your things. you take off your makeup and your expensive jewelry that you plucked off the wrists and necks and fingers of random passing civilians during all of your worldly travels. when you pick your phone up, you notice that you have a text from an unknown number.
floor 45, room 7.
you roll your eyes and toss your phone back onto the bed. you’re a strong woman-- certainly strong enough to resist the temptation of knowing exactly where to find the one person that you want.
one hour passes. you scroll through instagram.
another. you finally crawl into bed.
three hours. it’s nearly three in the morning and you cannot sleep.
by four, your feet are in slippers and you wrap a silky robe around your body.
you don’t move. 4:30am blinks at you on the clock.
at five, bucky is opening the door, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and staring at you.
“don’t say a word,” you hiss before you’re grabbing for him, pulling him to you, and pressing your lips to his.
but bucky is a smug asshole. as you move through his suite, his hands are everywhere, and he pushes you back onto the bed. once he’s hovering over you, his lips just a ghost above the shell of your ear, he can’t help but whisper…
“looks like nothing’s changed.”

I really am working on finishing this tale.
-----------------------
Chapter 48
September 18, 1840
Anna’s eye began to twitch. She rubbed at it, causing a bead of sweat to tickle her brow. Reaching to her sleeve for a handkerchief, she found it empty. I left it on Elsa’s vanity. Biting back a curse, she swiped at the annoyance with a fingertip, wiping it clean on the bandage covering her forehead.
She suspected the twitch, along with the dull throbbing behind her eyes, had more to do with Poul’s droning voice, than the head wound. Her back and legs had begun to protest against the unyielding wood of the council chair. How can sitting be so exhausting?
Stealing a glance at the clock, she wanted to groan. Less than an hour had passed since she’d arrived for the meeting. She hadn’t wanted to leave Elsa’s side, but the council had requested a meeting to update her on state affairs.
As Regent, it was her duty to govern, until Elsa was able to resume her duties. Words of one of her less tactful tutors whispered in her ear. There must be spares to heirs, in case the heir dies. That bit of news had sent her eight-year-old self crying to her mother’s lap, and the tutor seeking employment elsewhere. It had taken a visit to Elsa’s door, and a whispered answer from beyond, to satisfy her that Elsa was safe inside.
How she longed for the comfort of her mother’s arms. She shook away the thought. That comfort has long since passed, and there’ll be no whispered assurances of Elsa’s safety.
Elsa trusts me, I won’t let her down. She would act as Regent, even if it meant suffering through Poul alternating between complaining and bragging about his trip to France.
It didn’t help her bodice was trying to squeeze her to death. Alma had insisted it would help support her bruised ribs, instead it was slowly crushing her. On the bright side, if I pass out, I won’t have to hear any more about Poul’s trip. She swallowed a chuckle at the thought.
Tugging at the bodice, in an unsuccessful attempt to loosen it, she shifted, unable to find a comfortable position. The discomfort couldn’t distract her from thoughts of Elsa. She’d spent the last two days at Elsa’s side, with no signs of change.
Hours of talking and reading to her, had no effect. Unanswered questions swirled through her mind. How long can she survive without food or water? How do you heal magic?
Sighing she sank a little deeper into the chair.
“Are we boring you, Your Highness?” Poul’s arrogant snip pulled her from her thoughts.
“What? No, I just…” She straightened, heat burned her cheeks, as it had when her tutors had called on her for daydreaming. Poul is not my tutor. The heat cooled as she leveled a glare at the man. “Carry on, please.”
“Your Highness,” Bishop Solberg offered a sympathetic smile.
Anna found it almost as annoying as Poul’s snips.
“Perhaps we should adjourn till tomorrow. You’re still healing, we wouldn’t want to over tax you.”
“We can’t adjourn.” Poul bellowed, sweeping a hand over the stack of papers laying before him. “We’re not even half way through the agenda.”
Biting back a sigh, Anna couldn’t keep her shoulders from slumping. The thought of suffering through more of Poul’s rants caused her eye to twitch.
 “If Her Highness,”
Anna’s teeth grit at the way Poul sing-songed her title.
“Isn’t feeling up to acting as regent, perhaps she should assign the duties to someone else.” His lips rose into what Anna assumed was an attempt at a smile. She found it mocking. “Just until she’s feeling better, of course.”
Her hands tightened atop the table. I’m Regent, I could knock his teeth out, no one would complain. They might even give me a medal, at least a plaque. She attempted a smile, though it felt more like a snarl. “There’s no need for that, councilman. I assure you, I’m more than capable of handling my duties.”
Oblivious to his impeding peril, Poul flicked a speck of dust from his sleeve. “It’s obvious the princess’s thoughts are elsewhere. Perhaps she’d like to take her leave and attend to whatever is more pressing than state business.”
“Watch your tongue, Poul.” Admiral Halldor warned, a hand coming to rest on his sword hilt.
Stitches and bruised ribs were all that kept Anna from leaping for the man’s throat. “You arrogant, pompous ass,” She was too angry to enjoy the way Poul’s jaw dropped in stunned shock. “My thoughts, Councilman, are with the Queen. I left her side to handle my duties as regent, as she would want. In case you have forgotten, her health and well-being is of great concern to the state.”
Poul’s face flushed an alarming shade of red, his mouth began to open and close as a fish gasping for air. For once, he seemed at a loss for words.
Reigning in her rage, Anna managed a civil tone as she turned to Halldor. “Admiral, you mentioned a report on repairs to the fleet. Please go ahead.” She glared at Poul, daring him to challenge her for cutting off his report.
“Yes, ma’am.” Halldor made no effort to hide his amusement at Poul’s expense. “With the help of Her Majesty’s kraken, we’ve recovered all of our fleet along with most of the Lienz’s fleet.”
How many of the dead were recovered with those ships? She couldn’t bring herself to ask the question aloud.
“Several of their ships were destroyed beyond repair.” Halldor said. “The captured Lienz ships are being converted to our needs. We are well ahead of schedule on repairs. The entire fleet should be ready to sail by the end of the month.”
“Good.” Anna nodded, her mind racing. “Admiral, with the addition of the Lienz ships, won’t that double the size of our fleet?”
“Actually, it will triple it, ma’am.”
Lost in thought, Anna’s mouth twisted up at one corner. “Could we decommission some of the older ships, and use them to replace some of the merchant and fishing vessels lost and damaged during the attack?”
It was Halldor’s turn to ponder. “I believe so, some of the older scout ships could be converted to fishing vessels, and there are several larger frigates that could be used by merchants.”
“So, we’re just going to start handing out ships?” Poul said.
“What do you suggest we do with them, Councilman?” Anna asked.
“Sell them. Build up the kingdom’s coffers.”
Something twitched in Anna’s gut. She couldn’t decide if it was anger, disgust or both. Why does Elsa allow him to remain on the council? “Councilman, our people have lost their ships, most don’t have the funds to replace them. It will cost Arendelle’s coffers nothing to give those ships away, and it will help those hurt by the war.”
“The Princess makes an excellent point,” Bishop Solberg jumped in, cutting off Poul’s response. “Many have lost or suffered damages to their businesses. They will need help rebuilding.”
Poul’s head shook from side to side, red flush crept up his neck and cheeks. Snapping papers about, he mumbled something under his breath.
Anna was glad she couldn’t hear it. Let him stew in his own anger for a bit.
“Admiral, begin selecting ships to be decommissioned, and we’ll work out a plan for issuing them to those in need.”
 “Yes, ma’am.” He nodded.
“How are repairs going in town?”
Halldor shifted his arm sling. “Not as well as the fleet repairs, ma’am. Most of the docks were damaged. Teams are working on them, but it will be several weeks, possibly a month before all of them are reopened.”
“A month?!” Poul spun toward Halldor. Wood creaked under the strain. “Have you any idea how much trade revenue we’ll lose in a month?!”
“Not as much as we would have lost had the Lienz fleet taken the town.” Halldor’s icy gaze, caused the man to shrink back in his chair.
Ignoring Poul, Anna pressed on. “Admiral, please thank the crews for their hard work.”
 “Yes, ma’am.”
“What is the status of the traitors, Admiral?”
“We’ve identified Tollak, Baron Ulstein and Earl Stewart as the leaders of the rebellion, ma’am.”
“Earl Stewart, you must be mistaken.”
 All eyes turned to Poul.
He cleared his throat before continuing. “Earl Stewart is a well-respected nobleman. His family has been in Arendelle for generations.”
“Be that as it may,” Halldor said. “We have confirmed he hired the mercenaries who attacked the Queen and her guard atop the North Mountain. Captain Olsen,” He motioned to the officer at his side. “Led a troop to the Earl’s estate the morning following the battle in town. Captain, give a report on your findings.”
“Yes, sir.” Olsen directed his reply to Anna. “Upon arriving at the estate, we were greeted by Lady Ursala. When I called for her husband, she announced he was deceased, and I was welcome to take his corpse back to town as she didn’t wish to soil her lands with it.”
“Deceased?!” Anna hadn’t meant to squeal. “How?”
“Gunshot wound through the heart, ma’am. I examined the body and confirmed he was indeed dead.”
“Through the heart?” Anna eased back in the chair. “Suicide?”
“No, ma’am. Lady Ursala caught him cleaning out his safe with money he had obtained by selling off her family’s lands. She confronted him about his involvement in the rebellion. He confessed to his crimes, at which point Lady Ursala drew a pistol, and shot him dead.”
“Really?” Nervous laughter left her in a snort, she covered her mouth with a hand.
“Yes, ma’am. Lady Ursala sends her regrets she did not realize his traitorous behavior sooner.
“Remind me to give her a medal.”
Murmured laughter circled the table. All but Poul found amusement in the quip.
“Lady Ursala, also sends wishes for the Queen’s speedy recovery.”
Mention of Elsa squashed Anna’s moment of relief. “Thank you, Captain.”
“It appears, ma’am,” Halldor said. “Tollak was the leader of the traitors in the ranks. He managed to place his men in key positions throughout the town and castle to cause the greatest damage.”
Tollak, Fingernails sank into the palms of Anna’s fists. He played me, just like Hans.
 “Your Highness?”
“What?” She realized all eyes were upon her.
Halldor had the good grace not to point out her lapse. “I have the casualty reports, if you would like to hear them?”
No, I would not like to hear them. Steeling herself, Anna nodded. “Please, continue.”
Olsen handed him a sheet of paper.
Halldor’s eyes swept over it, his mustache dipping low. “Confirmed deaths during two days of battles, among Marines five hundred and thirty-four. Sailors three hundred and ninety-seven.”
Fingernails bit deeper into the palms of Anna’s hands, she said nothing.
 “Royal Guard, seventy-eight.”
Faces of Anna’s guard detail haunted her vision. Her knuckles whitened.
“Wounded among Marines eight hundred and seven. Sailors six hundred and two. Royal guard one hundred and thirty-eight.”
“Why,” she swallowed to keep her voice from cracking. “Are the Marines’ losses so high?”
“Most of them were aboard the ships. Once the ships began to sink, they were either trapped below decks or were weighted down by gear and unable to swim to safety.”
Anna’s chest tightened, she forgot to breathe. Unable to answer she managed a nod.
Taking that as a cue to continue, Halldor picked up a second list. “Casualties among the civilian population are eighteen dead, one hundred and twenty-three wounded, so far.”
“So far?” The words left Anna’s lips as barely a whisper.
“Yes, ma’am. We’re still recovering bodies from damaged buildings and the sea.” His gaze dropped. “And there are a number of wounded who are not expected to survive.” Drawing himself up, Halldor looked her in the eye. “The coming days will give us a better sense of the total numbers.”
Anna slumped deeper into the chair, crushed beneath the weight of his words. Her mind swirled through the numbers. “So many lost.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Halldor agreed, sitting aside the paper. “Though I assure you, the losses would have been far greater if not for the Queen’s ice creature. It turned the battle in our favor when all was thought lost.”
Unable to speak, Anna’s head moved up and down in a slow nod. A thousand dead. Almost two thousand wounded. Something hot and wet trickled down her cheek. She swiped at the tear.
How many more are we going to lose? Elsa’s pale face filled her thoughts. Squeezing her eyes shut, she shook away the image.
“We have patrols searching for traitors, and the mercenaries who fled into the mountains. A few have already tried to sneak back into town and onto ships. The new port master is keeping a close watch.”
“New port master?” Anna pulled herself back to the present.
“Yes, ma’am,” Olsen said. “The former was working with Tollak.”
Anna noticed Olsen made a point of ignoring Tollak’s rank when speaking of him. It was a fitting insult. “Is there any word on the man who stabbed my sister?”
“No, ma’am. We located the area of the attack, but there was no sign of either man. We’re still looking.”
“Captain, when he’s found, I want him brought to me immediately. Understood?”
“Yes, ma’am.” He dipped his head to her.
“Admiral have you managed to get any information from Hans?”
“No, ma’am. Doctor Engen has allowed him to be moved to the dungeon, but he is still weak. I attempted to question him this morning without any success.”
“Keep trying, I want to know everything he knows about that disk.”
“Yes, ma’am. Your Highness, with your permission, I would like for Captain Olsen to begin replacing the heavy losses suffered by the Queen’s Shield.”
Heavy losses, The warmth of Morten’s blood covered her palm. She rubbed it against her skirt, unable to remove the imagined stain.
“We need to get trustworthy soldiers into those positions as quickly as possible. As long as there are traitors on the loose, we can’t afford for you or Her Majesty to remain unguarded.”
“Trustworthy soldiers…” Anna’s mind reeled, pulling her back to darker moments.
 “Is that a yes, ma’am?”
She looked up to find Halldor watching her. “Yes. Yes, Admiral, do what you see fit.”
“Thank you, ma’am.” Halldor tugged at his arm sling. “There is one more thing I would like to discuss, Your Highness.”
 “Go on.”
“With the Lienz fleet’s surrender we’ve been overwhelmed with prisoners of war. They are currently being housed in a warehouse near the docks. Conditions are not ideal, and it is taking a great deal of food and supplies to house them. With Your Highness’s permission, I would like to take a few of their stripped-down ships, load them with as many non-commissioned soldiers and sailors as possible, and send them back to Lienz.”
 “No.”
Halldor frowned at the reply. “May I at least send the wounded back?”
 “No.”
“Your Highness, the longer they stay here the greater the risk of…”
“If they are not pleased with their accommodations, they should have stayed in Lienz.” The chill in her voice could have rivaled Elsa’s ability to frost over a room.
“Ma’am, we’ve no reason to keep them.”
“They murdered our people! Why should they get to return safely to their homes and families?!” Anna’s heart began to race, blood roared in her ears.
“Might I remind, Your Highness,” Halldor’s tone took on a eerie calmness. “the Queen promised no harm would come to them, if they surrendered. She promised them safe passage home.”
“Then they should pray for her speedy recovery, because I made no such promise.” Muscles tightened along Anna’s jaw. Deep down she knew Halldor was right. Still, she refused to yield.
“Princess Anna,” Halldor held her gaze. “to break the Queen’s surrender terms would be a great dishonor not only to Arendelle’s reputation, but that of the Queen’s. If word were to spread of Arendelle having failed to honor terms of surrender, we would be seen as little more than pirates upon the sea.”
“Admiral,” Anna sat a little straighter, ignoring the throbbing in her ribs. She leveled a hard glare at him. “those men will stay where they are until the Queen is ready to decide their fates.”
 “Your Highness, I must…”
“Enough!” Her fist slammed against the table with a solid thud. Pain shot through her hand, bringing with it a fresh wave of anger. She looked to each man as she spoke. “We have been attacked by traitors and thieves. I will not allow them to slink away in the night. The prisoners will stay where they are. I’ve made my decision.” She dared any of them to challenge her. None did. “We’ve nothing more to discuss. You may take your leave, gentlemen.”
Heavy silence hovered over the room. Poul was the first to stand.
The others followed suit, gathering their belongings in silence. Each gave Anna a curt bow before bolting for the door. Halldor tucked a leather satchel under his arm, and stepped to Anna’s side.
“Princess Anna, I know you are hurting, physically, and in your heart. For the sake of your people, don’t let that pain blind you to a proper path.”
She stared at the far wall, unable to meet his gaze. “Good day, Admiral.”
His mouth opened to speak, instead he sighed, offering a bow. “Good day, Your Highness.”
Walking away, his footsteps faded in the hallway.
As the council room doors clicked shut Anna slumped over the table, pressing the heels of her hands against her eyes. The pulsing ache that had been building in her head grew stronger. Damnit! Damnit all to hell! I can’t even run a council meeting without screwing it up. Her head bowed, fingers running through her hair, before digging into the tender flesh beneath. Elsa what am I going to do? Three days. Three days and she hasn’t stirred. What if she doesn’t wake up? No. Stop it. She’s going to wake up. She has too. Tears burned her eyes, she blinked them back, raising her head. She has too. “Kai.”
“Yes, Your Highness?” He appeared at her side.
“Help me into the chair. Please.” She reached for him.
“Yes, ma’am.” He slipped an arm around her waist helping her up. “Would you like to return to Her Majesty’s room?”
“Yes, please.” She didn’t want to go back to Elsa’s room. She didn’t want to sit and wait, watching as her sister slowly slipped away.
With a grunt, she settled into the chair, taking hold of the tiller. If only she could see Kristoff. She longed to feel the reassuring warmth of his hand in hers, but, that would have to wait as well. He’d gone into town to meet with the ice guild.
She would have to wait for his return. What else could she do? It was what she was good at, after all she’d had a lifetime of practice.

Split Decision
So I think what happens at the end of this particular scene in Frozen II has caused some controversy about Elsa’s actions. I’ve seen fans here on Tumblr displaying anger towards her because they believe that she was only hugging Anna, and then had Olaf join them, in an act of trickery to lure them closer to her so she would make sure that her ice boat creation would surround and hold them before she sent them away.
However, while I agree that Elsa’s move was a bit sneaky and deceptive, I understand why she did it and why she felt it was her only choice, even though she knew Anna would consequently be furious with her over it. And now that I think about it, I look at Elsa’s hug from another perspective and believe that it wasn’t merely a trick to lure Anna and Olaf into her boat trap, but her own way (though a rather forceful and indirect one) of saying goodbye to them.
Before this happens, Elsa has decided to venture to Ahtohallan alone, without Anna, saying that crossing the Dark Sea to reach Ahtohallan would be too dangerous of a trek for both of them to make. Yet Anna adamantly insists on coming to prevent anything from happening to Elsa, which she had earlier promised to Pabbie.
Tumblr media
The thing here is, Elsa turns out to be completely right about the Dark Sea. When she tries to cross it, she gets knocked down twice by the waves, struggles to swim in the deep, choppy waters, and has to use her powers to try to overcome the obstacles to get further out and closer to Ahtohallan. Things get more complicated for Elsa when the Nokk appears; several times, it aggressively attacks her and attempts to drown her, forcing her to fight back with all of her might until she finally makes it settle down.
This whole scene reminds me of the earlier scene when Elsa decides to go to the forest and tries to discourage Anna from coming, saying that she (Elsa) has her powers to protect her, while Anna does not. But Anna stubbornly refuses to take no for an answer, given what dangerous feats she overcame on their previous adventure without the use of magical powers.
Tumblr media
The entire scene of Elsa against the Dark Sea proves her point about her powers’ use in protecting her perfectly. She would not have been able to take care of herself by working to get past the big waves and fighting the Nokk if she had to do it with Anna, too. Maybe this sounds a little biased, and I don’t mean for it to sound that way, but it’s true that only Elsa could successfully face off against the Nokk since they are both magical beings (and as it turns out, Elsa is an elemental spirit just like it). Okay, yes, we’ve seen how Anna can do a damn great job of taking care of herself in tough situations, and I give her credit for it. I am not at all dismissing her as a weak, inept, incompetent, helpless damsel in distress, because I KNOW she isn’t. She’s tough, plucky, spunky, brave, and fearless. But Anna DOES have her limitations, and I think she sometimes overlooks or underestimates that about herself. Successfully crossing the Dark Sea and taking on the Nokk is NOT something she would have been able to do at all.
Getting back to Elsa’s reasoning that she had to go to Ahtohallan by herself, like I said, the scene of her doing so proves that she was right. Now she probably didn’t anticipate on encountering the Nokk, but I bet Elsa did think that there might be risks about which she didn’t know yet while crossing the Dark Sea, which is another reason why she refused to let Anna come along.
Another thing here that catches my attention is how Anna doesn't seem to heed Elsa’s words about the sea being too dangerous if they both tried to go, since she immediately responds to Elsa’s statement with, “No, no. We do this together. Remember the song? ‘Go too far and you’ll be drowned’.” It is crystal clear from these words, and from her earlier scenes where she never wanted to leave her sister’s side, that Anna had a desperate desire to protect Elsa during this journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she adds, "Who will stop you from going too far?", it sounds like Anna isn’t thoroughly considering that the chances of Elsa dying was much greater, and for herself as well, if they tried to pass the Dark Sea together. Anna wanted to ensure that Elsa didn’t head too far into Ahtohallan’s depths and dying, but they wouldn't have even made it to Ahtohallan without crossing the sea first. They both could have perished before getting there, and then their mission would remain incomplete. Then again, perhaps Anna did realize the possibility of them both not being able to make it across the sea, but she just didn’t want to accept or even think about it because she was far more afraid of losing her sister if Elsa went all alone.
Obviously, the fact that the two discovered moments earlier that their parents had died trying to reach Ahtohallan in search of answers to her powers is what made Elsa decide that Anna could not go with her. She guiltily felt responsible for Agnarr and Iduna’s deaths, and she didn't want to carry extra weight on her shoulders by feeling responsible for Anna’s safety and taking the chance of her dying if they went together. Since Anna is the only blood family Elsa has left, she refused to risk losing her, too.
I mean, remember: Elsa briefly lost Anna once before, and at her own hands, so she was determined not to let it happen again. Any chance of losing Anna again on this journey would no doubt be permanent, and Elsa would never forgive herself if that happened. 😔
Like the earlier scene, Anna stubbornly refuses to take no for an answer to Elsa’s decision to go to Ahtohallan alone. While she understands Anna’s fear of the chance that she (Elsa) may die on her trek, Elsa knows that she may have to take that risk just to do what is right for Arendelle and the forest. But successfully crossing the sea is something that is far beyond Anna’s control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So having made up her mind that crossing the sea would be more dangerous if they both go, Elsa puts her foot down (by LITERALLY doing so when she creates the ice path 😆) with utmost and firm determination that Anna cannot continue the journey by coming to Ahtohallan with her.
When Anna says that she wants to come because she can’t bear to lose Elsa, Elsa says she can’t lose Anna, either, and pulls her sister in for a hug. Like I said above, I see her hugging Anna, and Olaf, not just as a ruse to ensure that she could send them off to be safe, but to say goodbye. If Elsa thinks that she may die and thus never see them again, then she wanted to embrace them now since it may be for the last time. Despite Anna’s insistence and voicing her fear of losing Elsa, Elsa feels that her fear of losing Anna is even greater since Anna would be in much greater danger with trying to cross the sea. So she resorts to forcing her sister not to accompany her by making the ice boat and sending Anna and Olaf away to make sure that they wouldn’t and couldn’t follow her. Elsa also creates the ice path on which for the boat to slide to ensure that the two would be sent too far away for them to easily follow and catch up with her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, I have been wondering if Elsa's desire to journey to Ahtohallan on her own wasn't just for the safety measures of her sister, but also because of her introverted nature, because of her independence and desire to do certain things alone (which she clearly demonstrated when she made up her mind to travel to the Enchanted Forest). Additionally, the fact that Elsa is another elemental spirit of the forest, the fifth spirit, means that she had to go to Ahtohallan by herself, as part of her destiny to learn her true identity. She had to be independent, as she likes to be, and discover the whole truth for herself, on her own.
While Elsa is the introvert between the two sisters, Anna is the extrovert, and with this kind of nature, I don't think she truly understands the ways of introverts. It is with this scene, and even in Frozen, when she insists to Kristoff that "nobody wants to be alone, except maybe you" as a response to him saying “Most people who disappear into the mountains want to be alone” that shows that she doesn’t entirely comprehend their ways. Maybe after three years, Anna understands Elsa and Kristoff’s introverted behaviors a little more. But when considering the big picture, I think she still believes no one ever really wants to be alone, or even do things alone, just because she doesn't want to. After all, Anna spent nearly all of those 13 years alone and isolated from the outside world, and she wants to make sure she never goes back to that life. And yet despite her tragic childhood and adolescence, Anna grew up to be kind, sweet, loving, and good-hearted, and never hesitates to help others and do what was right. However, it also seems to have made her a bit delusional and unrealistic by thinking everyone else wants to be around people like she does, or that they always need help for every situation. Anna doesn’t appear to fully understand that some people like to be independent and have to do things on their own, nor does she seem willing to accept the fact that she can’t help everyone with everything, especially Elsa. She has to learn that she can’t be by Elsa’s side all the time just to stop every bad thing that might happen. She has to learn to accept and respect the fact that Elsa feels comfortable taking on some challenges all by herself and doesn’t always need help. In the first movie, Anna’s ignorance of Elsa’s secret is part of why she didn’t understand why her sister was so distant and closed in. But even after discovering it, she still disbelieved that Elsa wanted to be alone and that it was a major reason why she ran away. And while she was right in the long run, Anna sometimes seemed to go too far with her optimism since she didn’t really listen to Elsa’s concerns that she couldn’t remove the winter curse. Likewise, when she first met Kristoff, Anna didn't understand his grumpy, rude, unfriendly behavior towards her and Oaken, or his contemptuous attitude towards people and society.
So now in this scene, Anna seems to be unable, or perhaps just far too stubborn, to comprehend the fact that Elsa MUST do this on her own as part of her destiny, and that her powers could help her through this, while the same could not be said for her (Anna). Again, the tasks of making it across the Dark Sea and simultaneously taming the Nokk are beyond Anna’s control. It would have been far more treacherous than climbing the North Mountain, surviving a frozen heart, and saving Elsa from her ex-boyfriend without powers to aid her. 😉
Moving on, when Anna and Olaf are finally out of sight, the last shot of Elsa in the scene shows her holding herself and looking unhappy at what she did. As I said in “Keep Your Hands to Yourself”, Elsa does feel guilty and unhappy over sending Anna away the way she did, knowing full well that having done so has made her sister angry at her. But right now, Elsa is far more concerned about Anna’s safety than her happiness, and she would rather send her away to be safe than let her come along for the rest of the journey just so Anna can be happy that they are still together.
So again, Anna could not come with Elsa to Ahtohallan because the perils of the Dark Sea could have killed them both. If it didn’t kill both of them, Anna would have been the more susceptible victim because she possesses no magical powers to help her, especially in dealing with the Nokk. With even one of them dead, Elsa and Anna’s mission would never be finished; as I explained in “Girls in the Mist”, they HAD to do it together.
Elsa’s decision to split her and Anna up in this scene means that for now, she has broken her promise that she and Anna would do their mission together. But when Elsa temporarily freezes to death upon going into the most dangerous part of Ahtohallan, Anna manages to lift the mist and free the forest by provoking the Giants into destroying the dam.
Because she was alive and safe like her sister wanted her to be, Anna was able to successfully finish the work Elsa started. So even though they weren’t physically together the whole time, they STILL did it together, meaning that in the end, Elsa kept her promise to Anna. 😁😄😊

Please tell us what we could've had with Brave
I'm so curious and can't find anything for some reason
I was gonna answer this way earlier I'm so sorry anon BUT let me tell you now!! Long post ahead
WHAT BRAVE COULD'VE BEEN, AN ESSAY BY MEEEEE
okok so I will admit I've watched tons of videos on the subject and I can send them to anyone who wants
ANYHOW
The fact that this movie went through tons of rewrites probably comes as a surprise to no one. I don't remember exactly how many, but there was a good few rewrites throughout basically the whole movie, hence why some parts don't really go along with others.
So what could've Brave (2012) have been?
Lets start with the good part of the movie, or the only good part. The beginning.
We're introduced to Merida; A young rebel held to ridiculous standards by her parents, a young girl with a wild and free heart and that part of her is clearly endorsed by her father the king, but not so much by her mother the queen.
This is shown by the fact that her dad gives her a classic longbow (English horseback type may I add as an archer myself!), but with rules set in place by her mother (Shown through the oh so classic scene "No bows on the table. But MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM-")
Throughout the start of the movie we learn a few key facts; Though the king is the one supposedly making the decisions, it is the queen who is actually getting things done and the true ruler around here.
But here, let me give you a few examples of this!
She is very clearly respected in a regard that her husband is not.
Tumblr media
In this scene a fight breaks out, which her husband joins if I don't remember wrong when he was supposed to stop it. He's more or less just one of the lads so to say, where as the queen? She has RESPECT. The fighting crowd clears as she decisively walks up to her husband and the other clan leaders to quite literally grab them by the ears. They look at her in a way that tells you that this is a woman you do not disrespect, because she means business.
There's also several times where she has to tell the king to do/say certain things that he as a king should know to do himself. She's like a puppeteer but in a nice way.
There's another scene that we'll get to in a second, just bear with me here!
The queen represents a more conservative ideology, the system that tries to push us into little perfect neat boxes.
She may be the voice of reason and the more or less true ruler of their kingdom, but she also represents what Merida fights so hard to escape.
Elinor is always depicted as very proper, from the way she speaks to the way she carries herself. Where the king, the triplets and Merida can act a bit of however they want without a care in the world, the queen always carries herself as... Well, royalty. As both a monarch and a woman she HAS to fit this specific box of how to act, walk and talk, and this is very cleverly shown throughout and DOES to the movies credit carry through to the bad parts later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EVEN IN THE PROMO ART THIS SHINES TRHOUGH
Tumblr media
She's proper - Standing straight and neat, acting her best and like she should as a woman in her position.
So of COURSE Merida clashes hard with this idea of how you should live, and this shows and is the REAL struggle in the beginning of the movie.
This brings us to the proposal scene.
In this scene each of the clans bring their sons to marry Merida, the princess. This is where shit hits the wall.
Elinor pushes desperately for Merida to fit into this neat little box that she herself has had to live within for probably most of her life now that Merida is becoming a grown woman and, in turn, a queen.
Now she has to act this specific way and dress in a way, all these things absolutely NOT in character for Merida. So she acts out in small ways, tries to be her own person but her mother does not let her. Merida is to become a queen, and a queen does not act the way Merida has up until this point.
This does NOT fly for our protagonist however. She does NOT want to get married. She and the king also laugh at the guys wanting to marry her together, quickly shot down by the queen. Mind you this is ENTIRELY the queens decision and this HAS to be done.
So when she hears the clans have to compete for her hand? AND she gets to pick what they have to compete in? A devilish plan is born and she sees a new chance at freedom!
She picks archery with the plan to compete for her own hand and rebel against her mother. She is NOT gonna fit into this tiny neat box and she is gonna show it.
The day comes, Merida and the king make fun of the boys and get a scolding look from the queen which immediately shuts them up. Again a show of how much power and respect she really has, where just a simple look is enough to discourage bad behavior.
Final competitor Merida walks up to the archery line. Shit hits the fan like you wouldn't believe.
Tumblr media
You stop and put down that bow or so help me. The king is concerned but finds it funny at first, but not the queen.
Elinor. Panics.
She is powerless as she rushes up while still trying to keep composure. She is the queen, she has to stay proper. Always stay in role.
The crowd watches on horrified, they know what is going to happen. Merida is ice cold as she walks up, tearing the all to tight dress holding her back and hits the X on target after target. She is breaking free, no, she is CLAWING her way out of this life forced upon her by a mother unwilling to understand or even compromise.
She stops and in a quick breath focuses, the queens threatening aura looming closer yet closer with each heartbeat. The final nail in the coffin. She releases the arrow and in stone cold perfection splits the final arrow down the middle, landing a final victorious X.
She turns around and faces her mother.
Tumblr media
A seething rage for different reasons.
Cut.
The next scene they are fighting, ending with Elinor throwing Meridas beloved bow in the fire, completely destroying it, and Merida cutting a beautifully handcrafted textile in half.
They've both destroyed something important to one another. They are even.
Elinor expresses deep regret after throwing Meridas bow into the fire, trying desperately to recover it from the flames but is too late and the intricate weapon is already too far gone to even hope to restore.
AND NOW THE MOVIE TAKES A FUCKING NOSEDIVE
Throw everything we've just built up out of the window baby because none of this is relevant anymore! Mom becomes bear and we are thrown out on an all too familiar "LETS GO ON AN ADVENTURE TOGETHER WOOOOO ROADTRIP LETS FIND FRIENDSHIP ON THIS ROADTRIP :D"
Literally if you want to watch a movie with bears and a roadtrip like scenario go and watch Brother Bear, it's way fucking better than the trash they shat out for this movie.
Merida """accidentally""" curses Elinor to become a bear, and the only way to make her not a bear is to give back and fix something important and close to her heart.
They fix the fabric, the thing her mom made that Merida cut in half that occurred during the fight. But Meridas bow? Never fucking mentioned again. Not even an apology.
They never bring up ANY of the things mentioned here again in the movie. They never apologize to Merida. Merida is the one who has to change in the end ANYWAYS and Elinor never has to apologize for any of the things she did.
It's seriously so fucking upsetting to me what we lost here, and what we'll never have. We could've had an amazing movie about empowerment, about breaking free of rules already set for us because of the way we were born and about learning to change. But instead we got absolute vomit.
Anyway sorry for the incredibly long post, and fuck Disney <3 If you're gonna watch their movies pirate them, don't give them a single fucking dime. I'll never forgive them for the Frozen Elsa lookin ass dragon in the new movie.

A Reflection on the Insidiousness of Fandom Racism and Awareness of It
In light of @hb-pickle‘s post calling out racism within the Frozen fandom, I want to clarify things to people who may not even realize they are being racist.
Racism isn’t simple. It’s not a clear division between the “overtly racist” and the “non-racist.” It’s not like flipping on a light switch, where you either are racist or you aren’t. It’s not simply a matter of “supporting racism” and “not supporting racism.” Even the most “non-racist” people around, who continually stand against prejudices, can still do things (without even realizing it) that are racist or have mindsets that are inadvertently racist because they have grown up in a racist culture.
The history of racism is so entrenched into every society that people are going to to accept racist stereotypes unwittingly, have moments where they are racist without knowing it, or may know to check their privilege but still reflect the racism around them - because it is so entrenched. And that doesn’t make them “bad” people - as long as they can listen to those around them - listen to the people of color in fandom, listen to the groups who are trying to help them to understand and be better.
In the Frozen fandom, there has been overt racism - calling the Northuldra “savage,” comparing their clothes to “pigeon shit,” implying that Elsa is somehow classier than or “above” them, etc. But there have also been subtler things. If we recognize that someone is using racist language and we don’t call them out for that behavior, we become complicit in that behavior - even if, in our hearts, we disapprove or don’t want any part in it. When we are friends with people who behave in an overtly racist manner and don’t make clear that their overt racism is unconscionable, we become complicit.
We owe it to ourselves to stand up and call out such behavior. Because we might think, “Well, I’m not racist because I hate seeing racist language like that and wish it would stop,” but if you let a friend continue to behave that way when you could talk to them or self-reflect more about yourself, that continues a toxic cycle within fandom as much as the “overt” racism does.
I’m not saying this to demonize. As a white woman, I’ve been in positions before in other fandoms where I have been unknowingly racist and complicit in racism. It’s all a part of... existing with a certain degree of privilege in any society - because again, racism is entrenched in clear and subtle ways within every society.
But listening to others when they feel hurt by racist language is a step that you can take. And if your first instinct is to get defensive, maybe pause and think to yourself, “Why? Why am I being defensive? And even if I think I can fully recognize my privilege, what does my defensiveness say?”
If you’re more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to people who use overtly racist language but not willing to give the benefit of the doubt to people who are angry and frustrated about racism in fandom, maybe you should pause to think, “Why?”
The answer to that, “Why?” shouldn’t be, “I’m racist and there’s nothing I can do.” It should be something like, “I can recognize my blind spots and work to be better. This isn’t the end, but a brighter and better beginning.”
And if you’ve been silent about the more overt racism from certain people even though it has made you uncomfortable, it’s okay to speak out to your friends about it - and hopefully your friends will learn.
And it’s good to speak out more clearly on your blogs to show the people being hurt by racist language that they have a friend in you.
Listening and understanding are steps forward.
Also, on another note: No one is saying that you can’t criticize the ways in which the white writers of Frozen portray the Northuldra. The Northuldra get very little screentime in F2, and to a degree, serve to push forward the stories of the white (or white-passing) characters. Iduna’s storyline, while fascinating, is underdeveloped and, it could be argued, only exists to deflect accusations of a white savior narrative. You might also point out that their portrayal hews a little too close to “stereotypical magical indigenous characters who are in tune with nature.” All of these points are valid because they are directed at the writing, not at the indigenous characters as individuals.
But calling characters slurs? Making fun of their clothes, or skin tone, or culture (again, not the way the white writers portray that culture but the culture itself)? That’s directed at the characters themselves. And that’s why it’s hurtful.

Why Kristoff is a great partner and character.
There are many great male characters in the Disney canon. The Valiant, Pungent, Reindeer King Kristoff Bjogrman, stands among them as one of the best. Kristoff has something special about him that I feel goes unnoticed by many people, simply because Kristoff is a tri-tagonist in the Frozen Franchise. However, I’m here to tell you that there are things about Kristoff that truly make him shine regardless of his smaller role in the overall story. The franchise was never focused on romantic love, but within Kristoff we see a character that exemplifies what a good romantic partner should be like.
Another long one guys, so under the read more we go!
I’ve seen a few posts try and say that Kristoff’s relationship with Anna is unhealthy. However, I want to offer some viewpoints on why I feel this in not the case. According to the Hall Health Center, A healthy relationship is when two people develop a connection based on:
Mutual Respect/Honesty
Playfulness/Fondness
Trust/Support
Separate Identities
Good Communication
Kristoff is able to show all of this to Anna; while not all at once and at the very moment they meet, he does develop these skills and qualities as his and Anna’s relationship flourishes. It is also stated that all of these things take work, and is not something that just happens immediately, and that is ok. Most of these qualities Kristoff is able to show when we first meet him as adult, while others he develops over time with trial and error. As with Anna and Elsa, Kristoff is not perfect, and needed to learn certain lessons to become a better version of himself.
Mutual Respect/Honesty
It is no secret that Kristoff respects Anna’s boundaries and decisions. While he may not agree with some of them, and is vocal about it, he still doesn’t try to force his views or needs. It is always good to be honest with someone, but to not force their hand or treat them like a child. For example -
During Frozen, Kristoff is very vocal about Anna’s decision to marry Hans. He tells her that, honestly, it is a reckless decision. However, he never tries to force her to break up with or change her mind. He just very clearly states his opinion, but never steps over that boundary to try and make decisions for her. This behavior is shown throughout the film, as Kristoff is able to be honest with her on her decisions, but never tries to stop her or force her hand. The only time he directly tries to stop her, is when Anna is getting ready to throw a snowball at Marshmallow, because it directly affects her safety.
Also during Frozen, Kristoff respects Anna’s boundaries by asking Anna for her consent before kissing. He doesn’t force her into a surprise kiss, he asks her first if they could. This shows how Kristoff respects her bodily autonomy, and recognizes her possible trauma from Hans.
In Frozen 2, Kristoff again shows how he respects her decisions.
“You had to go, and of course its always fine.”
In Lost in the Woods, while Kristoff is having a harder time in this film being honest about his feelings (at first) Kristoff reiterates that he always respects Anna’s choices, never trying to force her to think one way or guilt her.
Playfulness/Fondness
Kristoff adores Anna. That, is obvious. He’s playful with her all throughout Frozen, teasing her without out right insulting her. We also know exactly how he feels about Anna as he expresses his love for her in Frozen 2. He finds Anna -
“Incredible”
“Feisty”
“Brave”
He also mentions how she’s his ‘ginger sweetheart’, suggesting that he likes her hair color (in other words, he finds her beautiful).
Also in Frozen 2, we can clearly see that Kristoff and Anna have a loving,  physical relationship. This is a bit of a wacky point to mention considering that this is a children’s film, but the implications are there so I will talk about it. Anna and Kristoff kiss multiple times with both parties being comfortable, and Anna is ready to have a make out session when Elsa and Olaf fall asleep in the sled. This shows how the two of them have enough fondness of one another to be able to be physical.
Trust/Support
This is a big one, and one of Kristoff’s best qualities. Not only does he support her, as mentioned in the respect section, he shows how he is able to trust her decisions, openly asking her what she needs to do when he rescues her from the rock giants.
“I’m here, what do you need?”
“To get the the dam.”
“You got it!”
Kristoff doesn’t ask her why, he just trusts her judgment. This is clear development from the first film, when he didn’t trust her judgment based on her choice to marry Hans. Then, he gladly helps her up the cliff without a fuss or undermining her strength.
“Help me up.”
“We’ll meet you on the other side.”
His trust for her also grows when he is finally able to come to terms with how he feels. In fact, the scene above demonstrates how when Kristoff finally reflects on his emotions, he is able to be more confident with their relationship and have more trust that Anna knows what she’s doing.
Kristoff also spends both films and short films giving Anna support. In Frozen, while he at first only cares about Anna’s promise to give him a new sled, he starts to show genuine concern for her. He offers to help her down when she (barely) climbs the mountain, runs to her side when she collapses from Elsa’s blast, and tries to keep her warm when carrying her down to Arendelle. Even in Frozen 2, when he’s unsure about the status of their relationship, he still comes to her aide and helps her during the fire attack, and of course comes rushing to help her with the rock giants. In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, he sees Anna down and wants to cheer her up, and helps Elsa in Frozen Fever throw a party for her, using every inch of his strength to make sure it doesn't get ruined.
Separate Identities
Kristoff is not dependent on Anna. While he loves her and wants to be there for her, he has a separate identity and is able to support himself.  He has a life outside of Anna, including his friendship with Sven, his troll family, and his ice business. He is able to leave Anna’s side, for example in Frozen Fever to drop off the Snowgies, and in Forest of Shadows he leaves to talk to the Trolls.
His self esteem is also not dependent on Anna. He openly wears what he wants, proclaiming that he only dress nice for Anna for as long as he’s comfortable, does strange things like talking to Sven, licking a strange sculpture in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, compliments his stew in the same film even though Elsa and Anna are visibly disgusted, and never takes Anna’s insults in Frozen to heart.
“Nobody wants to be alone. Except maybe you.”
“(Laughs) I’m not alone.”
He states the last comment without any indication that he is being defensive or is offended by the statement. In fact, it doesn't faze him at all. His worries in Frozen 2 about Anna’s feelings are not about his self-esteem, but rather losing her as a partner. Let me better explain this. Kristoff mentality is not this -
“Anna is the only one who will consider me and if I lose her, I will have no one else. I am nothing without her. ”
It is this -
“Anna has become an important part of my life because of how amazing she is, and I don’t want to lose her.”
Yes, he does claim in Lost in the Woods how -
“Who am I, if I’m not your guy?
Where am I, if we’re not together forever?”
But I firmly believe that this has to do with him letting his fear take over, not so much how he actually feels, which I’ll explain more in a bit. Thus, Kristoff is not scared of losing his relationship with Anna because she makes him feel good about himself, he’s afraid of losing her because he genuinely loves having her around in his life. He loves her as a separate person, not as a crutch.
Good Communication
This is the tricky one, because Kristoff has to develop this skill from trial and error. He doesn't have it already set, however it mostly affects his romantic life. He can pretty much say whatever he wants and what is on his mind to everyone else, and even to Anna before he realizes he loves her.
However, we clearly see that in Frozen 2, Kristoff is having a hard time expressing his desires to Anna. He wants to marry her, he wants to start a family. But what if Anna doesn’t want that? What if they are actually growing apart?
I care about her, but does she care about me?
Because of this fear, he is over explaining and fumbling over his words. Even so much as letting it affect his self-esteem, which he didn’t have a problem with before. As I mentioned many times in other posts, fear is a reoccurring villain in the Frozen Franchise, and it has reared its ugly face in Kristoff’s development as well.
His fear is making him hesitant, clumsy and question his self worth. Even though this really has nothing to do with any sort of dependence on Anna, he is letting his fear make him believe that he needs her to a desperate degree. In fact, he showed in the beginning of the film that he was much more calm about their relationship and had no doubts. It wasn’t until Anna started to focus more on Elsa that he started to grow this irrational fear. It didn’t happen in full blast until he thought Anna left him permanently.
However, after expressing these negative feelings out loud, and not letting them bottle up inside, he was able to see the flaw in his thinking as evident later on. After assisting Anna, he explains that he understands how she felt, and that it didn’t have anything to do with him. As Anna was strong enough to push forward even after losing everything, Kristoff was strong enough to able to put his feelings of self-doubt aside and find the confidence he lost.
“I know, I know, it’s ok. My love is not fragile.”
In just a few words, Kristoff expresses how his love was stronger than his fear, realizing what he already knew: that he is good enough, that him and Anna were fine, and that he was over reacting based on a fragile fear. Then, of course, he is able to tell Anna how he feels without doubt, finally asking her to marry him.
Thus, we know that Kristoff follows the traits of what makes a healthy relationship to a tee. Even though he didn’t have every quality at first, he developed them over time. As every character is flawed in Frozen, and need to make the bad choices first in order to learn, Kristoff needed to experience the same thing to be the best version of himself that he was always capable of.

I think one of the reasons Show Yourself doesn’t resonate for me as much as it should is that the song frames itself as offering Elsa emotional closure... but then it doesn’t really follow through on offering that closure.
Let me say up front, I realize that my feelings are colored by my complicated relationship with the way Agnarr and Iduna are portrayed in F2. I know I’ve talked about this ad nauseum, but for anyone who may not have seen those posts, let me give a quick overview: I love Agnarr and Iduna. I find them sympathetic and richly complex. But I don’t like the way F2 brushes aside the part they played in fostering Elsa’s self-hatred and Anna’s struggles with isolation. That’s not because I want to demonize them or anything. They were put in a heartbreaking situation and made bad choices while trying to do what was best. Some have suggested that F2 had to brush aside the parents’ mistakes because that would make them look bad, but things like Dangerous Secrets have shown that you can discuss their actions in Elsa’s and Anna’s childhoods while still portraying them sympathetically - and that actually enriches the narrative instead of deterring from it.
But, because F2 brushes aside Agnarr’s and Iduna’s actions when Elsa and Anna were children, it leaves “a gap in the text” as I’ve called it in the past, meaning that Show Yourself can’t land for me the way it must have been intended to land.
Tumblr media
Friends of mine, and also animation critics on Youtube that I’ve watched, have discussed how Show Yourself gives Elsa emotional closure with her mother, allowing Iduna to give Elsa affirmation and allowing Elsa the relief of that affirmation. But the thing is... it doesn’t give Elsa (or Anna, not present in Ahtohallan) closure for what happened to them as children. The film bends over backwards not to address what happened to the sisters as children. It doesn’t give Elsa the chance to process how the decisions that her parents made hurt her and come to terms with that, presumably by accepting that her parents were human beings seeking to do good, but put in a devastating crisis. And again, my wish that the sisters got a chance to process how their parents’ actions hurt them doesn’t mean I want them to hate their parents or condemn them. Processing doesn’t have to mean condemnation or judgment - and a sympathetic look at Agnarr’s and Iduna’s actions could create compelling parallels with Elsa being forced to make hard choices in F2. I just want... acknowledgment. I want the sisters to be able to get that closure. And so far, I haven’t been able to see that. Dangerous Secrets is beautiful, but it’s told from Agnarr’s and Iduna’s perspectives. I’ve praised Frozen Fever in the past for allowing Elsa and Anna a space to directly address the pain of the past and heal from it, but even that short doesn’t really touch on the root of the sisters’ trauma.
And I guess that’s part of why Show Yourself is a bit thorny for me. It frames itself as giving Elsa closure, giving Elsa relief... but it doesn’t give Elsa closure for something she desperately needs closure on.
Tumblr media
It positions itself as a mother reaching out to a daughter - and that’s a beautiful concept, don’t mistake me, a beautiful moment - but it brushes aside the complicated circumstances that both mother and daughter had to endure in their lives. Instead of meditating on the history between them and using that history to build an even richer connective tissue between the films, it goes for the abstract.
There’s a post I reblogged ages ago that suggested that Agnarr and Iduna stand in for the idea of a father and mother in F2, rather than the complex characters that the first film showed them to be and rather than fully exploring the complex history between them and their daughters. And while I don’t agree with everything that post said - it was far more critical of Agnarr and Iduna as people than I am - I do agree with that particular sentiment.
Maybe I’m sensitive to this because I’ve been hurt by my own family, and so the pain the sisters went through for thirteen years hits especially close to home for me. Maybe that’s why I keep returning to what I call this “gap in the text.” Maybe, because I identify so much with Elsa during those years of isolation, I’m sensitive to things that ignore that her behavior in the first film was learned - taught to her by her parents who I know had good intentions, who I know loved her, but which hurt her in the end. It makes little things that wouldn’t bother anybody else nag at me - maybe because I’ve seen people blame Elsa completely for the childhood separation in the past, maybe because I’m still kind of in the position Elsa was in during her youth and I know how it hurts. Things like the line, “I have always been a fortress, cold secrets deep inside.” No, you haven’t. You haven’t always been a fortress. You weren’t a fortress as a little girl, Elsa. You were open and vibrant and free. You had to learn that - from circumstance, from life, and yes, from the misguided decisions of the parents who loved you and wanted to protect you (also let’s please not ignore the trolls’ part in all this either).
Tumblr media
The thing that gets to me too is that, on its own, Show Yourself is transcendentally beautiful and, while I’ve spent this post critiquing, there are so many good elements in F2. Even the concept of a mother reaching out to her daughter is, as I’ve said in this very post beautiful and with a little more focus on the complexities of what Elsa and her parents actually went through, it could be all the more resonant. (Also, the deleted scene of Anna getting to see her parents is beautiful and should have been included - though, if I may fall back into critique mode again, it also kind of brushes aside the fact that Agnarr and Iduna’s choices helped to shape Elsa and frames them as more benevolently wise... even though it’s still so much more poignant for me than what we get in the finished film.) You can see fragments of greatness in F2 and it’s clear the filmmakers approached the film with a lot of love, and I wish the film could coalesce better for me... But the lack of reflection on Elsa’s and Anna’s childhoods still feels like a blind spot for me (or, if not a blind spot, a deliberate choice by the filmmakers that does a disservice to the complexity of their characters and the pain they went through - and a choice that stings for me as someone still going through a similar kind of pain in the closet.)
I’m sorry that this post got so long. I meant it to only be a few sentences of musing, but when you start to speak from the heart, I guess your heart pours forth. I hope people don’t feel I’m being unfair in my reflection. As with all my posts, I did all I could to be even-handed, fair, considerate of different perspectives. I hope that shone through.

Elsarik Week, Day 7-Love
I had actually been working on this one a while back, and realized it would be perfect for today. So here it is- the aftermath of Frozen 2 if Alarik/Shardsverse had happened before the move.
Alarik, as always, belongs to @patricia-von-arundel
Love
It takes him far too long to realize something's wrong with Elsa.
Alarik knows he's dealt with a great deal- maybe too much- over the past few days. He's physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. No one would blame him for missing the signs, especially when Elsa kept hiding them.
He does blame himself. He's better than that- he's had time enough to learn the subtle shifts in her behavior, well enough to know when she's the slightest bit uncomfortable. Let alone when she's in a great deal of pain.
But it takes until that evening, when he goes to check on her, that he finds out.
He knocks on the pole of the temporary shelter the Northuldra had built, and peers in. "Els…"
Her name catches in his throat.
Part of him wants to believe that what he sees is a trick of the low light. It would be much better to brush off the mottled discoloration on her exposed shoulders as the play of shadows on her skin.
But Elsa leaps and spins, her eyes wide, and he knows what he saw was bruising, dark and angry. She crosses her arms, winces, lets them drop, and he can see her left hand is swollen and red.
He steps further inside, letting the tent flap close behind him. Her eyes are wide, and she retreats a few steps. He stops, gives her space.
"Elsa?"
She starts at her name, and he hears her sharp intake of breath.
She's in pain.
"Elsa, what happened?"
She looks away, trying to recede further into the dark of the tent- without the flap open, the only light source is the lantern on a nearby stool. "It's nothing. Really. I'll be fine."
Now it's Alarik's turn to be grateful for the minimal light, as it allows him to ball his hands into fists and tighten his jaw to keep from shouting.
'Nothing!?'
He takes in a slow breath instead, forces himself to use calm, measured words. "Elsa, please. You know I don't believe that."
He can hear the tight, high note in his tone and curses internally when she tenses. He prepares himself to try to reason when she inhales deeply.
Then everything spills out.
He stands there, frozen as if encased in ice, as Elsa explains the fight with Nøkk in the Dark Sea, her freezing, and the subsequent thaw that sent her plunging back-first into the water. His mind struggles to come to terms with what he's hearing. Tossed about like a rag doll by massive waves, nearly drowned by the water spirit and falling who-knew-how far into water back first.
By the time she's finished, Alarik is shaking. He wants to go out and strike something, and at the same time hold Elsa in his arms and never let go to keep her safe. He wants to scream, to ask her why, why she would go through all that, allow herself to endure such pain, even death.
Elsa slumps into the pile of furs that make up her bed, her shoulders low and head hanging. He comes in, closer, then sinks onto protesting knees at her side. He fights the urge to pull her into his arms- she hasn't granted permission for touch yet.
"Why?" He can hear the tremble in his voice. "Why, Elsa, would you do this to yourself!?"
"I… I had to, Alarik." Her voice is soft, too soft, and choked with tears. "For the Northuldra, for Arendelle… I had to."
His gut rolls, and acrid taste coats his tongue. He pushes himself up, stumbling, his voice rising. "You had to!? Had to be beaten, nearly drowned, frozen!?" He's yelling now, but he can't bring himself to care. "You died, Elsa! You died!"
Elsa looks as if he's struck her, and it all becomes far too much. Alarik utters some strangled, agonized noise before turning and staggering out of the tent. He can feel eyes watching him, and he picks up his pace, searching through a haze of tears to find someplace quiet. A fallen tree at the edge of the clearing catches his attention, and he slumps onto it, his head falling into his hands. The tears fall then.
Footsteps approach, and the log shifts as someone sits next to him. "Leave me alone." he mumbles through his fingers.
"Absolutely not."
Anna.
He doesn't look up- he can't, not right now. "She's in there trying to pretend that there's nothing wrong, that she isn't covered in bruises and can barely move because she's in so much pain. Acting as if she didn't freeze to death!"
His words echo on the glade, and several Northuldran turn to stare, before quickly dropping their gazes and moving away. He doesn't care. It doesn't matter.
Anna sits there, watching him with a soft expression. When he doesn't say anything else, she reaches over to rest her hand on his.
"And you weren't able to stop it. Or even just help her."
Alarik whips his head around to stare at Anna in surprise. She gives a half-smile.
"I felt- feel the same way. Elsa and I talked about it. Well, sort of. I was upset. And I will be for a while. And that's alright. It's going to take time for all of us to come to terms with what happened. For all of us to heal. But you can't do that by leaving. Go back to her. And say what you need to say."
Anna takes both of his hands, squeezing gently. Her eyes lock on his. "It's time. No more guessing, no more fear. Go back to Elsa. Do the next right thing."
Alarik nods.
………
He returns to the tent, but when he raises his hand to knock once again, his resolve fades, and he can't make his arm move.
"Alarik?"
Her voice is tentative, wavering.. He pushes back the tent flap to find her still sitting on the bed, her arms wrapped about her. He can see the fresh tear tracks on her face.
"You heard us."
It's not a question, but she nods anyway. He can see her trembling. Alarik takes the risk and sits next to her, not touching, but there. He folds his hands together, trying to find the right words. But it's Elsa who speaks first.
"I was afraid. Afraid you, and Kristoff, and Anna would be hurt. That's why I left without you. Why I pushed Anna away. I… none of you deserved to be hurt because of my powers."
"But you deserved it?"
Elsa doesn't answer him.
"Elsa, no. I know you struggle. I know I can't even begin to comprehend what you live with each day with your powers, and your past. But I know this- you did not deserve that pain and suffering anymore than you believe we did. And to know you were alone when-"
His throat tightens, and he looks away, biting back a choked sob. Then he's turning to her, hands out- a silent plea. She hesitates for the briefest of moments, then acquiesces with a tiny nod.
Alarik brings his hand up to cup her jaw, his thumb stroking the corner of her lip. He presses his forehead to hers, feeling her tremulous breaths cool the tear tracks on his cheeks.
"I can't bear thinking of you being alone like that again. Not if I have the power to be by your side."
Do the next right thing.
"I love you, Elsa."
She stiffens and gasps. She knows his mother's rule. Never say 'I love you' unless the next words are-
"Marry me?"
Silence surrounds them, making the pounding in Alarik's ears feel deafening. The turmoil in his mind grows with each passing second- he's gone too far, she'll never accept him, he needs to leave, run away, the only thing he's ever been good at-
Elsa's hand- freezing and trembling- covers his, and it's enough to jolt him back to reality.
"Yes." Her whisper resounds in him like a shout, and he's laughing and crying as her uninjured hand wraps around his neck, pulling him down to meet her lips. They kiss long and deep, until the need for air forces them to break apart. Alarik carefully gathers Elsa into his arms, mindful of her injuries, and closes his eyes as he rests his head atop hers.
They would still have much to talk about, much to heal from. But this time, they would do it together.

Damn You For Making Me Love You (15/15) - Epilogue / Don’t Stop Believing
Tumblr media
That's it, this is the end. Or maybe not? I must confess that my idea for the epilogue was slightly different, but I was running out of time, so I had no choice but to present this alternative ending. Despite this, I think it works. Also, that will allow me to continue exploring this universe because I intend to write that ending. I don't know when, but I will. I'm determined.
One last note. The scene of the last performance is entirely inspired by a movie. In case you don't get it I'll reveal it at the end. In the meantime, enjoy the reading.
Thank you very much for joining me on this adventure during these last weeks.

Epilogue - Don’t Stop Believing
Liam - January 4, 2020
Liam couldn't stop smiling. It was as if, after their little getaway and his little — big — discoveries in the cabin, a permanent smile had settled on his lips. He had several reasons to do it, really. On the one hand, his brother and Emma had finally decided to give themselves a chance, leaving behind their fears and embracing their feelings. On the other hand, the acceptance of his feelings towards Elsa — and the fact that they were reciprocated — had led him to a state of almost continuous contentment.
There was no better way to start the year, honestly.
Speaking of Elsa... Liam looked up, directing his gaze towards the entrance of the Kraken. She was late. Since their return last Wednesday, they hadn't seen each other as much as he would have liked; not for lack of interest, but because of their respective responsibilities. But they had agreed to meet at the bar today, something not surprising since Elsa hadn't missed any of Killian's performances in the past few weeks. She wasn't going to miss it today either, of course, since it would be the first time Killian and Emma not only seemed to be a couple on stage, but were a couple in real life.
"She will be here soon." Emma's unexpected voice startled him while she came to stand beside him. "She texted us a couple of minutes ago. She was already on her way."
Liam turned his head to look at Emma, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Elsa hadn't sent him any text at all. He had checked his phone just a minute before. It was the use of the word us that finally gave him the clue to identify what Emma meant.
Elsa had sent a text to the group chat, where Killian, Emma, Kristoff, and Anna were also included. And Liam had silenced the damn chat the day before. "I didn't notice," he muttered, looking away, suddenly interested in ordering the glasses in the compartment under the counter.
"You haven't read it." It wasn't a question, but rather an affirmation. Emma's voice denoted no reproach, but curiosity. Fortunately, a customer approached the bar to order a drink so, after giving Liam one last skeptical glance, Emma moved away from him so he could serve the drinks.
Liam had his reasons for silencing the chat.
Emma and Killian were the ones to blame, in fact. Accepting their feelings and acting on them hadn't changed their behavior. Liam felt grateful for it, truly, but since last Wednesday, Emma had practically settled in their apartment, which meant that he had become a witness to their constant public displays of affection everywhere. They had always been present between them after all, but now they had acquired a level far from innocent or casual.
On top of that, their banter and almost perpetual bickering were still intact. It was frankly exhausting, especially when their teasing was also transferred to the texts they exchanged in the group chat. When he read an argument between them about something as banal as what they would have for lunch the next day, he had enough.
Now he just had to deal with them in person. Constantly.
For the next few minutes, he became distracted by serving and chatting with customers, his gaze instinctively heading from time to time towards the entrance. Elsa still didn't appear, something that was beginning to cause some concern in him. Not because of the fact that something had happened to her, but rather because the ghost of insecurity threatened to appear. What if she had thought better? What if…
"Stop worrying, she's coming." Again Emma's voice startled him. What's wrong with me today? He was an almost forty-year-old adult, not a bloody teenager with his first crush, for God's sake. Emma must have noticed his unease, because she immediately added, "Can you accompany me to the back room? I need to grab something."
It was an obvious excuse, he could tell. His lips pressed together, drawing a grateful smile, while he nodded. After telling Robin to cover him for a few minutes, he walked with Emma to the back room, to —he supposed —have a little chat with some privacy in a much quieter place.
Emma started talking the moment the door closed behind them. "You know, these past few days have been a little crazy. We've barely had time to talk, and..." She paused for a moment, offering him a smile full of affection. "I wanted to tell you that I can't be happier for you and Elsa. You more than anyone deserve to be happy and I'm so glad you found each other."
A wave of affection for Emma washed over him, while a warm sensation ran through his veins up to his heart. "We're still in the beginning, lass, trying to figure out our relationship. But I'm happy, very happy."
"Good," she said before melting into a tight hug with him to which Liam responded with pleasure. The affection he had for Emma went beyond words. He loved her in the most fraternal form of the word, as if she were his little sister. No matter what happened between Emma and Killian in the future, she would always occupy a special place in his heart.
"I'm also very happy for you two, Emma," he muttered against her hair. "My brother is so damn lucky to have found someone like you. I couldn't have thought of someone more suitable for him. You are perfect for each other." In response, Emma tightened her hug, burying her face in his chest. "You are better together."
"I wanted to... thank you, for acting behind our backs, for pushing us together," Emma confessed with a trembling voice after separating from him a little. Liam noticed her watery eyes and a lonely tear sliding down her cheek. He brushed her skin delicately, wiping away the tear and earning an adorable smile on her part. "These last weeks have been amazing; not only because I've been able to spend more time with Killian, which has led me to accept my feelings definitively, but because I’ve spent so much time with both of you guys. I love to share experiences with you."
"Good, although I must say that your fights are a bit exhausting, honestly." Emma made a sound, half laughing half snorting, causing him to grin. "But I love you both anyway. Besides, I should be used to it, right?"
"I love you too. And yes, you better get used to it, because I don't think we're going to act differently any time soon. It's one of the things I like the best about your brother, how he challenges me and how he fights back."
"I suspect that Killian thinks the same about you."
 "He better."
They broke up laughing in unison. It was a liberating laugh, which served to lighten the mood after the previous moment full of emotions. Once the laughs subsided, she gave him one last smile of affection and turned in the direction of the door. But she had barely walked a couple of steps when she approached him again.
"I'll tell you a secret," Emma whispered in his ear. "You are my second favorite person," she confessed and then placed a soft kiss on his cheek before separating again. "And you better hurry out, because I'm sure your current favorite person is already waiting for you." After winking at him, she finally left the room, leaving him with a feeling of bliss that he hoped would last for a long time. Emma was someone so special to him that he hoped to have her in his life forever. He suspected that wouldn't be a problem — if it depended on his brother.
Indeed, Elsa was already waiting, sitting on her usual stool, the one that seemed to have her name written on it. The feeling of contentment increased the moment his eyes fell on her beautiful face, the butterflies of his stomach flapping furiously while all his previous doubts dissipated as he contemplated the adorable smile she gave him when their eyes met.
He hurried to her and, without thinking, pressed his lips to hers in a brief kiss, one with the ability to shake him inside. He had already started to get used to that delicious sensation, something he hoped wouldn't fade with time since he had no intention of stopping kissing that woman.
"I can't believe it!" Ruby's unexpected voice beside him interrupted them momentarily. "What the hell happened in that cabin now that nobody seems to stop kissing?"
Although Ruby's voice denoted surprise and a bit of annoyance, her funny expression said something different. "You better get used to it, Rubes," he simply added, his lips drawing a wide grin.
Ruby rolled her eyes, but then offered a wolfish smile. "You should definitely change the name of the bar and use The Ship of Love instead, or something like that."
"You can always suggest it to Emma. After all, she is the advertising expert."
"I think I'll pass," Ruby replied with a dismissive wave of her hand. She wrinkled her nose and then her lips curled into a wicked grin. "She's very busy lately, eating your brother's face." Liam heard Elsa snorting while he himself couldn't stop a chuckle from bubbling in his throat. Ruby was right. "Anyway, I'm happy for you guys. Really." After offering them one last smile she left to attend a customer.
Once alone, he returned his attention to Elsa. "Hi," he greeted her, pressing a peck on her lips. "I missed you."
"Sorry I was late. I had a last-minute meeting. We're organizing a winter festival with the girls," she explained, offering him an apologetic smile.
His heart swelled with pride towards her. Her ice skating talent was undeniable, as was her ability to transmit her knowledge. The fact that she worked mostly with children only increased his admiration for her. "No need for apologies, love," he assured her, as he grabbed two glasses and placed them on the counter. "The usual, I take it?"
"I'm not sure. I'm still a VIP client?"
Before answering, he leaned forward, resting his forearms on the counter and invading her personal space. "You can be sure, lass. You currently occupy the top. At least on my list." Liam secretly admired how her cheeks colored with a soft pink shade as she averted her gaze whenever he offered her some compliment. He had no intention of stopping any time soon, not only hoping to keep that reaction in her, but because the compliments seemed to flow naturally. He had definitely fallen hard for that incredible woman.
"Very much appreciated. That's one of the reasons why The Kraken has become my favorite bar, the customer treatment. Well, and also that the owner, or should I say the Captain, is quite handsome and charming."
This time it was his turn to blush while his heart made a small somersault. Gods ! It was as if he had traveled back in time and had become a teenager again. He resisted the urge to kiss her again — since he was the boss and was currently in his workplace, he should set an example for his employees — instead opting to offer her a smile of appreciation accompanied by a slight bow of his head. He then poured the liquid into the two glasses, offering one of them to her and holding the other in his raised hand.
"I want to make a toast because right now I feel like the luckiest man in the world. With you."
The gaze she gave him was so intense that it had the ability to melt the most frozen heart. "I think we have someone to blame about it, right?" Elsa suggested before putting the glass to her lips and then ingested the liquid in a gesture that was too distracting. After leaving the empty glass on the counter she looked at her watch and then looked up, her gaze wandering around as if she were looking for something. "Where are the two lovebirds, by the way?"
Liam also looked around, surprised not to see either of them, considering that Killian's performance was about to begin. He exchanged a look with Elsa as he shrugged and was going to offer to go look for them when he noticed that Elsa's expression changed as she directed her gaze to a spot above his shoulder.
He turned his head following the direction of her gaze, meeting Killian and Emma who looked like they had just left his office, since Killian was already carrying the guitar. They obviously had performed some other activity inside the room, though. At least if their flushed cheeks, Killian's disheveled hair and the flustered expression on both faces were an indication. Liam let out a huff while shaking his head. Those two were impossible.
"I guess they're making up for the lost time," Elsa offered through a soft smile as if reading his mind.
"So it seems. But I'm afraid they'll have to be apart at least for a while. I'll be right back. I'm gonna introduce Killian," he said with a wink before going to look for the two idiots in love.
//
The concert was proving to be a total success. Whatever happened in his office, it hadn't affected Killian at all. On the contrary, he seemed more inspired than ever, his presence on the stage more prominent, his smile more charming, his voice more powerful and tuned. There was something that hadn't changed, though. His attention was focused on a single person, someone who kept taking pictures of him as if he were the only person around her.
When Killian's solo performance was about to end, Liam came out from behind the bar, approaching Elsa and offering his hand. They walked through the crowd until they found Emma, who briefly hugged her friend before giving her the camera. The three of them turned their attention back to the stage, waiting for Emma's introduction by Killian.
"Thank you very much to everyone. You are the best audience one can dream of!" Killian shouted as he made a gesture of applause addressed to the public, which only increased the cheers towards him. "And now if you’ll allow me, the stellar moment of the night is about to start; the moment when someone very special to me will accompany me on stage." Killian then looked at Emma, the expression of pure devotion to her written all over his face. "I ask you to give the best applause you can to welcome my particular angel, the incredibly talented and beautiful Emma Swan!"
Liam watched as Killian approached the side of the stage where Emma would appear, holding out his hand to her when she arrived. They walked together to the center of the stage, both sporting the same expression of happiness. When they were in position, Emma nodded almost imperceptibly to his brother and then began to sing, without looking away from Killian.
Just a small town girl Livin' in a lonely world She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Then it was Killian's turn. Liam would never have anticipated what happened next. After singing his first verse, Killian played the first chords with his guitar and then they merged into a passionate, brief, kiss right there in the middle of the stage, causing the entire audience to roar around them. These two know how to rile up the public, Liam thought as his lips tugged at a huge smile.
From there the magic continued on stage.
Liam stood behind Elsa, circling her shoulders with his arms while she rested her back on his chest, both watching in awe the huge talent both Killian and Emma had singing together. Liam couldn't be more proud of himself for being the one with the brilliant idea of pushing Emma that first time to accompany Killian on stage.
Don't stop believin' Hold on to the feelin'
That verse couldn't be more appropriate, Liam thought as he tightened his embrace on Elsa. He would never stop believing that everything was possible. Their current situation was the best example, with his brother and Emma creating magic on stage and overflowing with happiness and love. With a vibrant Elsa in his arms, it offered him the sensation of holding his (their) own future. He would definitely never stop believing in them and the endless possibilities they had together.

About the inspiration for the scene of the last performance, the movie is Rock Of Ages, and here's the video (spoilers! it's also the last scene in the movie, just in case):

Thank you so, so much.
These last few months have been quite complicated for me, so I have barely had time or energy to write, but I haven't given up, so I hope to be able to continue creating. Until then, it has been a pleasure. Stay safe, everyone.

May I suggest Anna and Kristoff telling their story to their kids, mirroring the time Agnaar and Iduna did that to young Anna and Elsa, and the kids being amazed at the story and ask about their auntie Elsa which eventually leads to a snow sisters reunion?
(THE FEELS AHFHFJFFJGHG!! this is so good I’m gonna go for a big drabble I think hahaha - and of course I get inspiration from your Kristanna children OCs)
=======
“And you jumped off a cliff??” Asked Hugo, eyes wide.
Kristoff giggled as he tucked his eldest son in his bed. “Yes I did. Well, actually, it’s your mother who jumped first. I had no choice but to follow her. Just like in life…” He added with a wink.
Anna, who was standing on the threshold with a sleepy Andrew in her arms, shook her head with an eye roll.
Hugo had a mischievous smile. “So you did crazy stuff too, mama, uh? Did you get a scar like me?”
“No, I didn’t” Replied Anna, still in her guilt after his incident on his first ice harvesting trip when they encountered wolves. “Also, I was 18 when it happened. Try not to risk your life again until then, uhm?”
He giggled in his sheets, and Kristoff ruffled his hair with a laugh.
“Jumping off cliffs is epic”, commented the blond boy.
His parents smiled, and Anna gave a sign to her husband as she left the room. “Come on, we have to put Andrew to bed.”
“I’m not tired!” Exclaimed her youngest boy in her arms. His voice was so drowsy that it got comical.
Anna smiled and nudged his nose with hers. “Yes you are.”
He mumbled something, putting his head back on her shoulder.
“Mama, could you tell us another story before sleep?” Asked Hugo.
Andrew’s face jumped up, now totally awake and excited. Anna had to restrain herself from grunting. She knew how impossible it was to put Andrew to sleep after a second bed time story. “Another one??”
“Yessss, pleeeaaase!” Begged the two princes with big eyes.
Kristoff tapped the sheets of Hugo’s bed. “Okay, mama sits back down. But a short one, alright? What do you want this one to be about? Andrew, you get to choose.”
The redhead boy had a thinking pout as he sat on the bed next to his mom. “Can you tell us a story about Auntie? We haven’t seen her in a while.”
The cute, warming, familial atmosphere in the room suddenly vanished. Kristoff stopped smiling, and cleared his throat as he lifted his eyes to his wife.
“I already told you last week, sweetheart.” Said Anna, her voice suddenly weak. “She’s busy up North.”
“Because of the war?” Remembered Hugo.
Kristoff gave a sad look to Anna.
“Yes, because of the war.” Said Anna. She forced herself to smile and have a strong voice. “She needs to protect the land from the destruction that humans could bring when they fight each other.”
“Why do they fight each other?” Frowned Andrew, who never understood hate and vowed to always have a peaceful behavior.
“It’s adult stuff, buddy. It’s too complicated. You’ll get it later.” Summarized Kristoff. Now was not the time to get political.
“Is it dangerous for her?” Asked Hugo.
Right in Anna’s heart. She gulped audibly, and Kristoff put a soft hand on hers. The Queen turned to him and gave a reassuring nod. “It’s okay. I can talk about it.” She whispered.
“Yes, it’s very dangerous.” Stated Anna to her sons. “She has to get in the way of both sides, and not take any, and make sure that Nature doesn’t get attacked on the… Battlefield.”
She had paused before saying the last word, and Kristoff looked at her with a supportive gaze.
“Do you believe in her?” Said Andrew, and the question was turned to both his parents.
“Of course”, immediately said Kristoff with some pride. “She’s amazing.”
“She’s the person I admire the most. She’s brave. She’s powerful. And she’ll always succeed.” Smiled Anna.
The two princess nodded in silence. Even from their young age, they perceived the emotion of the adults in the air.
“When will she come back again?”
“How long have you not seen her?”
They asked at the same time, and Anna clenched the sheets with her fist to not cry right then. She passed a hand in her untied hair and tugged it behind her ear.
“It’s… Wars can be long, you know, and… Uhm… It’s been more than a year since I last saw her. Since we all saw her.” She added, bringing the ‘us’ feeling of her family to give her courage. “But I get news from the battlefront from time to time from the informants, and there are rumors that the war is getting to its end.”
The two boys gave hurrahs and cheers, glad it ended on a positive note.
“Alright, you two devils, it’s time for bed now.” Smiled Anna, remaining happy, for the little faces of her children filled her heart with love again.
She was about to take Andrew in her arms once more, but Hugo tugged her sleeve. “Can you close the window before leaving?”
Anna frowned and looked up, and saw that indeed, the window was half open.
“I didn’t even notice it was opened. Kris, did you–”
“No, I didn’t do anything.” Frowned the man. “You know I don’t want Hugo to catch a cold.”
It was true, and Anna squinted her eyes as she stood up from the bed and walked to the window. The air of the outside was cold, and she hurried a bit to take the handle and close it. When suddenly, something in the air caught her attention. This type of cold felt familiar.
The redhead passed her head by the window and looked down the castle at the field below. Something seemed to shimmer in the distance, walking slowly along the grounds and to the walls of the castle, just under Anna. Something white, sparkly, and her long untied clear blonde hair was floating in the evening wind, and her smile was visible even from here…
Anna let out a great gasp, and clasped her hand on her mouth. Even if her expression was a proof of big emotion and happiness, Kristoff ran to the window to see what she saw. And his jaw dropped as well, melting in a smile.
With a swirl of snow and wind, the smiling figure below rose up to them, floating in the air right in front of the window, and the gust of wind pushed the windows apart so she could enter.
Elsa had planned to land next to Anna, but she barely passed the window sill that suddenly Anna grabbed her in the air and pulled her in her arms for an intense hug.
The Snow Queen yelped in surprise, and almost fell on her younger sister as the wind behind her closed the window neatly. In a gasp, Anna tightened her arms around her, her nose buried in her neck, and Elsa smiled and gave her the intensity of the hug right back. She finally put her feet on the carpet of the bedroom, and smiled at the familiar sensation both under her ice sandals and the warm feeling of being in Anna’s arms.
They stood there a while, being in each other’s presence without saying a word. Kristoff noticed that Anna was practically clamping herself to her sister, and he chuckled as he stepped closer.
“Hey, let her breathe, maybe…”
Anna let go of the hug and apologized, and indeed Elsa had to retrieve some oxygen as she stepped out of her arms.
“How are you?” Asked Kristoff, delighted to see her again as well.
“I’m really well, thank you”, smiled Elsa with a giggling voice, and she already filled the room with happiness as she did so. “It’s just been the tightest embrace you’ve ever given me”, she added to Anna as she massaged her ribs. “I haven’t felt this constricted since I got crushed by giants. I missed your amazing hugs.”
Elsa still had her hand in Anna’s, and she passed her thumb along her fingers. The latter giggled with a big smile, then it briskly dropped.
“Wait, what? Crushed by giants??”
The Snow Queen waved her other hand for a dissuasive effect. “They didn’t do it on purpose. I’ll tell you later. It’s a long story.”
Anna interpreted from her answer that she wasn’t going to stay for long, and all glee disappeared from her heart. Elsa seemed to read in her like an open book, because as soon as Anna looked down in disappointment, the blonde put her hands on her shoulders.
“I plan to stay for a long time in the castle. We’ll have plenty of days to catch up now that war is over. I’ve heard that you planned big changes to expand Arendelle? I can’t wait for you to tell me all about it.”
Anna’s eyes danced all around Elsa’s face as she listened to her and had so many emotions at each word she said. There was so many informations to process, and was speechless as she didn’t know what to reply; her mouth dropped open.
The elder melted in a smile at her reaction, and came closer to kiss her forehead. Then she saw the children behind her.
All that time, the two princes had been staring at them three, and were too shy and overwhelmed by the situation to even say a word. Elsa stepped to them, her untied hair floating around like a mane.
“Hugo! Andrew! Gods, you grew up so much!” She exclaimed, a big smile stretching her face.
She clearly was emotional, and the boys giggled in return. Kristoff stepped closer.
“Now they’re…”
“9 and 5 years old, yes” Smiled Elsa.
Kristoff missed a heartbeat, and Anna seemed shocked as well. She knew? He thought that for all that time, and all the events she had to face and take care of, she could possibly have forgotten her nephews’ birth dates. But judging from her confident look at she stared at the boys, she knew exactly.
The mountaineer turned his head to his wife, and noticed that Anna had tears in her eyes, overwhelmed by both the surprise to see that she knew, and the happiness to have the presence of her caring sister again. Elsa said she missed her hugs, and Anna too, but also the aura of her elder and the way her faced beamed with love.
“Do the magic! Do the magic!”
The Queen was snapped out of her daydream by Andrew’s voice. Childish and therefore high-pitched, it reminded her of her own childhood memory when she asked Elsa this exact request. That was the trigger; when she blinked, Anna’s tears finally went down her cheeks, and she let out a slight squeal.
Elsa’s sense of hearing was sharpened since her Fifth Spirit transformation and her experiences in the wild, so she turned around with a worried expression as Andrew and Hugo were jumping on the bed under her shower of snowflakes.
“Are you okay?”
The redhead rubbed her tears, and let out a giggle that sounded like a gasp of relief.
“Yeah, I just… I’m so happy that you’re here, Elsa.”
The elder smiled tenderly in return. “I am too.”

Chapter 18: A Rift Between Sisters
Arendelle
“You can wait here with the boys for now, Kairi. I’ll be back soon with Elsa after I tell her about you and why you’re here,” said Anna as she led Kairi into a small sitting room in the castle followed by Pluto, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf.
“Okay, Anna,” said Kairi.
“Hopefully she’s finally done with him.  Honestly, tomorrow can’t come soon enough,” said Anna bitterly as she exited the room.
Kairi made her way over to a nearby couch and sat down.  Pluto leapt on the left side of her and laid his head in her lap as she stroked him gently. Olaf plopped himself on Kairi’s right and smiled at her.
Kristoff sat down in a chair across from them and let out a deep sigh.  “Tomorrow can’t come soon enough for me either.  I’m just glad this will all be over soon,” he said as Sven sat down on the floor beside him.
“Me too,” Kristoff said in his Sven voice.
“Kristoff?  If you don’t mind me asking, who is this Duke of Weselton you’ve all been talking about?” asked Kairi.
“I can answer that question, Kairi.  He’s a duke and he comes from a place called Weselton. It’s not too hard to understand, is it?” asked Olaf causing Kairi to smile a little.
“I think she needs a little more information than that, Olaf,” said Kristoff as Sven nodded in agreement.  “Well, Kairi, he’s a dignitary from what used to be Arendelle’s closest partner in trade,”
“Used to be?  You mean, they’re not anymore?” asked Kairi.
“No.  And the reason why is during the time when Elsa accidentally started an eternal winter, he ordered his bodyguards to kill her in an attempt to end it.”
Kairi gasped.  “That’s horrible!”
“Yes.  So, when Elsa brought back summer, she had the Duke and his men returned to their homeland and cut off the trade agreement between Arendelle and Weselton.”
Kairi looked confused.  “But if he tried to have her killed, then why has he been allowed to return here?”
“Apparently, he wants to apologize for what he did, and he believed the only way to show that he meant it was to do it in person,” said Kristoff.
“And do you all believe he’s sincere?”
“Elsa seems to think so.  But Anna believes he’s still up to no good.  Me?  Well, I don’t think he’d try anything especially now that Elsa’s got her powers under control. But I think this whole apology thing is just him trying to get the trade agreement reinstated.  All I’m really hoping is that once he’s gone, things will get back to normal between Anna and Elsa,” said Kristoff.
“What do you mean?  Have they been fighting?” asked Kairi.
“Not exactly.  I mean, they haven’t stopped speaking to each other.  But due to their disagreement on the Duke’s visit, things have been pretty frosty between the two of them.  Everyone in the castle can all see it,” said Kristoff.
“I still don’t understand it.  They’re not just sisters but best friends too.  Why would things get bad between them like this?” asked Olaf.
“I can answer that for you, Olaf and the sad fact is, sisters and best friends don’t always agree on everything.  And that can sometimes lead to things being strained between them for some time,” said Kairi.  ‘I certainly know what that’s like.’
“I wouldn’t worry too much about it, Olaf. If I know Anna and Elsa, they’ll patch things up in time.  They’ve been through too much to let something like this split them up again,” said Kristoff.
Olaf smiled.  “You’re right!  Once the Weasel goes home, they’ll go right back to being best friends again,” said the snowman as Sven nodded.
“I’m sorry that I came at such a bad time. Maybe it’s too much to ask all of you for your help in finding Sora now,” said Kairi.
“Don’t say that, Kairi.  You couldn’t have known how things were when you arrived.  And if there’s one thing that may ease the tension around here after all this, it’ll be helping you find your friend,” said Kristoff.

Elsewhere in the castle, Anna approached the door to the audience chamber.  Pressing her ear to the door, she listened to what was going on within.
“Thank you again, Your Majesty, for allowing me to come to your kingdom as well as accepting my apology.  I only wish I could apologize to your sister personally,” said a male voice.
“My sister has made it clear she does not wish to see you presently so I will accept your apology to both of us on her behalf.  And I thank you, Duke, for abiding by our conditions as well as not bringing up the subject of trade between our homelands because my decision still stands,” stated a female voice.
In spite of herself, Anna smiled.  ‘That’s telling him, Elsa.  If that was what he was after all along, then way to beat him to the punch.’
“I assure you, Your Majesty, the thought of that never even crossed my mind.  All I wish is for relations to improve between our homelands and hopefully, someday you can both fully forgive my atrocious behavior,” said the voice of the Duke.
‘No chance of that!’ thought Anna.
“We shall see.  But for the time being, shall we consider our business concluded?” asked Elsa’s voice.
“Of course, Your Majesty. I shall depart for Weselton tomorrow morning.  Once again, thank you for everything,” said the Duke as the sound of his footsteps approached the door causing Anna to move away and flatten herself against the wall.
The door opened and out strolled, with an air of quiet dignity, a short man dressed in a fancy uniform.  He wore glasses perched on his pointed nose and he had a gray-haired moustache and matching hair although Anna knew his hair to be a toupee.
Neither he nor the Arendelle guard who was escorting him took notice of Anna.  They just continued to walk away until they turned a corner and were out of her sight.  She stared in the direction they had gone with disgust as she recalled the moment where the subject of his return had first come up and caused the current rift to form between her and her sister.

Arendelle, A Few Months Earlier
Seated behind her desk in the royal study, the Queen of Arendelle looked over a certain letter for nearly the fiftieth time.  Suddenly, a familiar knock on the door was heard.
“Come in!” she called.
The door opened up and in stepped her sister.  She wore a look of bewilderment to Elsa’s confusion.
“What is it?” inquired Elsa.
“Sorry.  It still feels a little strange to actually be let in,” said Anna with a little chuckle.
Elsa chuckled herself. “Well, if it makes you feel any better, it’s just as strange for me actually doing the letting in.”
Anna laughed and then said, “Anyway, Gerda said you needed to talk to me about something so what is it?”
“Well, Anna, we just received a letter from the Duke of Weselton,” said Elsa indicating the letter in question in her hand.
Anna groaned in frustration.  “What does he want?  Is he begging you to reinstate trade between Arendelle and Weselton which I hope the answer is no?”
“It’s actually not about that at all, Anna.  Why don’t read it yourself and see?  It’s actually addressed to you as well,” asked Elsa holding out the letter.
With a look of confusion, Anna walked over to her sister and took the letter from her.  She then began to read it over.
________________________________________________________________
To Queen Elsa and Princess Anna of Arendelle,
I do not know if this letter will be read by either of you on account that I have no right to expect such a thing.  But if you are reading this, then I thank you in advance for I have something that needs to be said.
I wish to offer my sincerest apologies for my conduct during my last visit to your kingdom.  Having had much time to reflect, I am deeply ashamed of the way I spoke and acted when things took an unusual turn at the coronation.
Please understand that the shocking revelation of the queen’s abilities as well as the possibility of perishing overcame me with fear.  And because of that, I acted in a very inexcusable manner and for that, I am truly sorry.
I know my words in this letter will not be enough to convey my regrets. Therefore, if you will allow me to, I wish to travel to your kingdom and offer a more formal apology in person. Only then can I believe my conscience will be truly clear.
Once again, I apologize, and I do hope you will consider my request.  I do not wish for there to be any hard feelings between us or our homelands.
Yours sincerely,
The Duke of Weselton
________________________________________________________________
Anna reread the letter making sure she didn’t miss a single word.  Finally, she lowered the letter and burst out laughing.
“He has got to be kidding.  He must really be desperate for that trade agreement if he’s pretending to beg for forgiveness now.  Good thing we’re too smart to fall for it, right Elsa?” asked Anna looking to her sister who, much to her surprise, wasn’t instantly agreeing with her.
“Elsa?”
“Anna, please don’t overreact to this.  But after reading the letter several times, I have been considering granting the Duke’s request.”
Anna let out a gasp of horror.  “You can’t be serious, Elsa!”
“Anna, please calm down,” said Elsa rising from her chair and approaching her now seething sister.
“The Duke isn’t one of my favorite people either.  But part of ruling a kingdom is maintaining civil relations with our neighbors even those we aren’t particularly fond of.  And judging from his letter, it seems that he is sincere in wanting to apologize for his actions and I think it would be unwise to just ignore that,” said the queen of Arendelle.
“So, send him a letter telling him his apology is accepted and there’s no need for him to come in person.  Then that’ll be the end of it,” said Anna.
“Anna, it’s not that simple.”
“I don’t want him coming within a hundred miles of us after what he tried to do.”
“No one can defend what he did.  But unlike… you-know-who, he didn’t come to the coronation to cause trouble right from the start.  When my powers were revealed and I plunged the land into a dangerous winter, he got scared.  And having spent a large part of my life afraid of what my powers could do uncontrolled, I can’t really blame him for it,” said Elsa.
“He called you a monster, Elsa!  He tried to have you killed!”
“Anna, for the longest time, I myself believed that I was a monster.  Hearing it from him was no different.  And you cant deny that my powers are capable of great harm when uncontrolled.  You should know that better than anyone.  Even if the Duke hadn’t tried to kill me to stop the winter, someone else with better intentions might’ve done the same,” said Elsa.
Anna folded her arms and considered her sister’s words.  She could understand why some people like the Duke of Weselton would be scared of Elsa’s powers and make bad choices because of that fear.  She had, after all, witnessed the destruction caused by Elsa’s uncontrolled powers and had a close call with death because of it. Still, despite Elsa’s logic, she still felt that allowing the Duke to return to Arendelle was a mistake.
Elsa took her sister’s hands into her own.  “I know you just want to protect me from him, Anna, and I appreciate that.  But trust me.  I’m not going to allow back into Arendelle unless he’s willing to follow certain conditions.”
Anna let out a sigh of resignation.  “Okay. If you think this is necessary to maintain good relations, then I guess we don’t have a choice.  But I want to help set the conditions, one being that I don’t to have to interact with him anymore than necessary and another being that he is not to bother Kristoff, Sven, Olaf or anyone else while he’s here among other things.”
“You’ll have your say in that, Anna, as long as you remember to be reasonable.  But before we start on that, maybe you should calm down a little,” said Elsa.
Anna huffed. “Fine.  I guess I’ll go tell the boys what’s going to happen and to prepare themselves for a visit from Weasel Town.  I’ll see you later,” she said frostily as she exited the study.
Elsa sighed as she went back to her desk.  Before beginning to look over more paperwork, she glanced at a picture on the wall of Anna and herself with their deceased parents, King Agnarr and Queen Iduna.
‘Mama, Papa, I knew when I became queen, there would have to be some tough decisions especially ones that Anna and I wouldn’t completely agree on.  I can only hope I’m doing what’s best for us and for Arendelle.’
________________________________________________________________
Arendelle, Present Time
‘He’d better behave himself for this night or so help me, he’s going to have to answer to me,’ thought Anna before taking a deep breath to calm herself.  ‘All right, Anna.   I know things haven’t been good between you and Elsa lately.  But right now, you need to put that aside if you want to help Kairi.’
Anna immediately entered through the opened doors and into the audience chamber.  Sitting on a throne directly in front of her was her sister. Elsa had her eyes closed and looked like she was relieved that the meeting was over.
A feeling of sympathy for her sister came over Anna.  ‘I guess the meeting wasn’t easy on her.  Then again, being in the same room with someone who tried to have you killed wouldn’t be easy on anyone.’
A few moments passed before Elsa opened her eyes and beheld her sister standing in front of her. “Oh, Anna!” she exclaimed.
“Hi, Elsa.  So, is that it?  Are we finally done with him?” asked Anna.
“Yes.  For now, at least.  There may come a time when we have to deal with him again in the future. But it is all in the name of diplomacy,” said Elsa.
“I know.  Even if we may not ever be friends, we have to keep things civil between us as you’ve told me repeatedly.  Personally, I hope the next time we see him won’t happen for a good long while.  But anyway, Elsa, our next order of business has come up,” said Anna.
Elsa snapped to attention with a confused look.  “Next order of business?  What are you talking about?”
“We have an unexpected guest.  And right now, she needs our help,” said Anna
Elsa’s confusion increased.  But she paid close attention as Anna related what had happened while she was meeting with the Duke.

Meanwhile, back in the sitting room, Kairi was getting to know her new friends a little better. Currently, Kristoff was telling stories of his life before he lived in the palace.
“So, these trolls took you in and made you a part of their family?” asked Kairi.
“Yep.  They may be a little overbearing and embarrassing at times. But I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.  The day they took Sven and me in was one of the best days of my life.  And looking back on that day right now, it seems even better,” said the ice harvester.
“Why is that?” asked Kairi.
Kristoff blushed for a second before blurting out in his Sven voice, “It was the day he first saw Anna!”
“Sven!” exclaimed Kristoff pretending as if the reindeer had exposed something he didn’t want to be heard.  The reindeer just made a laughing sound.
“Aww!” exclaimed Kairi.
“It’s true.  That was the first day I saw Anna.  Who would’ve thought that years later, she, a princess and me, an ice harvester, would be a couple?” asked Kristoff.
“I bet the trolls always knew.  They are love experts, after all!” exclaimed Olaf.
Kairi giggled.  “I guess we have something in common, Kristoff. After I lost my old home, I was taken in by a pretty loving couple who have been nothing but the most wonderful parents I could ask for.”
A twinge of sadness came over her.  ‘I can only hope they’ll forgive me for just running away again.’
Pluto sensed Kairi’s sadness and nuzzled further into her lap.  Kairi smiled and stroked his head.
“That same day was also when I met Sora.  He was the one who found me, and I will never forget how he smiled and held out his hand for me to take,” said Kairi as a little blush appeared on her cheeks.
Olaf giggled. “Sounds like he’s a pretty special friend to you.”
“Yes.  Yes, he is,” said Kairi almost dreamingly.
Suddenly, the door opened and in strolled Anna and Elsa.  Kairi immediately leapt to her feet as Elsa approached her.  The Princess of Heart bowed before the queen.
Elsa smiled.  “You must be Kairi.  As queen of Arendelle, I welcome you to our kingdom and our castle.”
Kairi rose up and returned Elsa’s smile with one of her own.  “Thank you, Your Majesty.  This is my dog, Pluto,” she said indicating her companion next to her who barked happily at the queen.
Elsa chuckled.  “It’s a pleasure to meet both of you.  But it’s not necessary to be so formal, Kairi.  You may just call me Elsa.”
“I did say you could call her by name, Kairi,” reminded Anna.
“Did you forget that already?” asked Olaf.
“No, I didn’t.  It’s just that my father always taught me to be formal until you got permission to be casual.  I just needed to hear it from Elsa herself first,” said Kairi.
“Your father should be proud that he raised such a polite young lady.  Now, Kairi, Anna tells me that there is a very important reason you’ve come to Arendelle,” said Elsa.
Before Kairi could say anything, Olaf chimed in, “Yes, Elsa!  Sora’s missing and we’ve got to help Kairi find him!”
“What Olaf said, Elsa. I hope that there’s something in your kingdom that can possibly lead me to him.  If you could help me find some sort of clue to where he is, I’ll be forever grateful,” said Kairi.
Elsa placed a hand on Kairi’s shoulder.  “If there is, we’ll help you find it.  You have my word that we’ll spare no effort.  But we can start our search tomorrow.  Right now, it’s late and Anna’s told me you’re in need of a good meal and a good rest.  So, would you and your dog care to join us for dinner?”
“We’d love to.  But you really don’t mind having a dog dining with you?” asked Kairi.
“We already have a reindeer usually joining us for meals nowadays so a dog isn’t a too unusual addition,” said Anna gesturing to Sven who gave a big smile.
Kairi laughed before she realized something.  “Will the other guest be joining us?”
“No,” said Anna and Elsa simultaneously although Elsa used a calm tone while Anna’s tone sounded as if she had just heard Kairi say something rude.
Elsa gave her sister a small glare of annoyance before turning back to Kairi and saying, “As one of the conditions of his visit here, the Duke is not allowed to dine with us. He must take his meals in his room.”
“Trust me, Kairi. You’ll be better off if you never have to meet him.  In fact, we’d all be better off if we’d never saw him again!” exclaimed Anna as she turned around and left the room.
“Anna!” exclaimed Elsa as she turned to watch her sister stomp off.  She let out a deep sigh.
Kristoff rose from his chair and walked over to Elsa.  “Don’t worry, Elsa.  I’m sure she’ll be okay once the Duke leaves.”
“I hope you’re right, Kristoff.  I hate that it’s been like this for these past weeks,” said Elsa.
“We’d better go calm her down.  We’ll see you later in the dining hall.  Olaf, Sven, let’s go,” said Kristoff as he left with the snowman and reindeer following him.
Elsa turned back to Kairi.  “I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“Oh no.  I’m sorry I said the wrong thing.  It’s just after what Kristoff told me about the Duke of Weselton, I’m not too sure that I want to meet him myself.”
“I’ve had Gerda make up a room for you in a different part of the castle from where he is and since he is leaving tomorrow, I doubt you’ll cross paths with him.  But in the meantime, let me show you to the dining hall,” said Elsa as she turned around and left with Kairi and Pluto walking alongside her.
As they travelled through the halls, Kairi mused on the things she had learned.  ‘I’d better watch myself around here while this Duke’s here.  After what he tried to do when he found out about Elsa’s powers, I’d hate to see how he’d react if he saw a Keyblade Wielder in action.  He sounds like the kind of person who would command the Heartless or worse, become one.’
Kairi then regarded the queen and saw the sad look on her face.  ‘It’s so awful that his presence here is making things hard between Anna and Elsa.  Seems I’m not the only Princess of Heart having trouble with loved ones.’
Between the search for Sora, the rift between Anna and Elsa and the presence of this Duke, Kairi never imagined a visit to another world would be filled with so much drama. She could only hope that things would improve soon enough.

Hello! Could u do some hcs on how Wamai is perceived by the other ops? (Or any Wamai content tbh i'm starving) Please and thank u!!
That’s a lot of ops to try and give perceptions from, so I’ll start with a few that I know would have interacted with him up to this point and rate their dynamic on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best)! I’ll also include my OC’s perception of him, if you don’t mind! :)
-Jack “Pulse” Estrada: Not long after Kali and Wamai got to the new HQ in Greece, Pulse was one of the first ones to greet them and give a warm welcome. While Kali gave a sort of cold shoulder to it, Wamai was very warm and smiled in return. He and Jack have had a few conversations, some philosophical and some just casual talk about interests. Over all Pulse likes Wamai, and they’re aiming to have a good friendship (10/10)
-Marius “Jager” Streicher: These two have a fun riot trying to see who’s device is superior in the R&D testing facility. They have Fuze come and assist in their friendly wagers, and so far Marius is winning on account of how many of the “pucks” he’s been able to deny over Wamai’s device. However, they do get along very well outside of work. Marius’ curious nature and friendly aura definitely makes Wamai feel welcome to open a conversation with him. (10/10)
-Elena “Mira” Alvarez: She’s a little frustrated that she isn’t allowed to give a proper analysis on either Kali or Wamai’s devices, but overall if she had to pick which one out of the two she liked more, she wouldn’t hesitate to say Wamai. She doesn’t quite understand his behavior or how he acts, but she isn’t opposed to interacting with him should he come talk to her. (7/10)
-Eliza “Ash” Cohen: Eliza absolutely hates the idea of any NightHaven operative being brought into Rainbow. Despite Wamai’s more charismatic attitude, she still doesn’t trust any of them, Ace included. Something about them doesn’t sit right with her, and even though she’s forced to communicate with them on a daily basis, she makes it very clear how unwanted they are in her eyes. She’s not looking for any sort of friendship with them, not now or ever. (0/10)
-Alexandre “Soutien” Moreau (OC): Alexandre is very intrigued by how Wamai perceives the world around him, and often times has sat down to ask about his views, and what got him to think the way he does. It’s a very refreshing mindset and one that has an endless sea of questions for him to explore. With Wamai’s calm and friendly behavior, Alexandre and him would totally get along! Though due to Alex’s busy schedule, it’s hard for them to find a lot of time to hang out. (9/10)
Thank you for requesting this! I whole-heartedly agree that Wamai needs more content. Reading his bio made me realize just how underrated he is by the fanbase. The man is so cool!! How could anyone not want content for him?
-Elsa

I’m bored and so I’m gonna make one of those “rip off some Youtuber’s hard-made list with my own BS opinions” posts. This is Tumblr and it won’t show in the tags anyway and hell I’m giving credit so it’s fine.
Today I will be going through a Blast From the Past and looking at a list of Dark n’ Scary Disney Moments. Made by WatchMojo here.
Anyway
20. Tadashi Dies - Big Hero 6: I never saw this movie but it looks like your pretty standard Disney death where there’s like an intense-but-not-too-graphic thing and then a hard cut to a funeral. Would probably be sadder if I had actually seen the movie but I agree, it’s pretty fucked up!
19. The Firebird - Fantasia 2000: OKAY YEAH THIS SCARED THE EVERLOVING FUCK OUT OF ME AS A KID. I saw this movie when I was 5 years old and it was one of the first (maybe THE first!?) movies I ever saw in theaters. That jumpscare still haunts me, man.
18. The Ghost of Christmas Future - Mickey’s Christmas Carol: I loved this movie as a kid but I wasn’t really scared by it even then. That being said, it’s still a pretty creepy scene, but I’ve seen scarier versions of this, even in kid’s movies. The fact that the ghost was smoking a fucking CIGAR had me cackling though I mean -
17. Hellfire - The Hunchback of Notre Dame: This whole damn MOVIE was dark. But that’s what you get when you adapt Victor Hugo for kids, I guess (seriously, why though!?) I definitely like this movie more as an adult, mostly cause half the themes went over my head as a kid. Including the ones in this song. But DAMN is it a bop and the visuals are stunning.
16. The Headless Horseman - The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad: Yeah I never saw this as a kid to my knowledge but... I’ll be honest, that’s pretty scary even watching it NOW as an adult. Damn.
15. Facilier Goes to Hell - The Princess and the Frog: Yeah that’s pretty terrifying too. I was a teenager when this came out so it didn’t creep me out that much but the music is eerie and the visuals and concept of being dragged into eternal damnation is... unsettling, to say the least! Would have terrified me as a kid I’m sure
14. Frollo Attempts to Onscreen Murder a Fucking Baby - The Hunchback of Notre Dame: How in the HELL was this given a G rating?! This was in the first ten minutes of the movie by the way. Also there IS an onscreen death - Quasimodo’s mom, a minute or two before this. Disney doesn’t usually do onscreen deaths so that’s... pretty intense, to say the least. But seriously. Yikes.
13. Night on Bald Mountain - Fantasia: Okay purely out of personal experience I found Firebird scarier, but had I seen this one in theaters as a kid I no doubt would have shit myself. Also this is one of Disney’s only exploits into showing topless women (besides the Rescuers blink-and-you’ll-miss-it thing). Nudity in a good wholesome G-rated Disney film?! It’s more likely than you think.
12. The Horned King’s Army - The Black Cauldron: Because nothing says Disney Magic like necromancy-induced zombies sent to destroy the Earth (or something, I don’t even remember what their goal was since I saw this when I was like six but still, it is indeed creepy as all fuck)
11. Maleficent Turns Into A Dragon - Sleeping Beauty: Yeah I gotta say this dragon is daunting. See, Disney, you DO know how to design a good dragon! Maybe you should take a page from your own book instead of just creating Elsa’s dragonsona?
10. The Burnt Village - Mulan: Other than the whole “Bambi’s Mom Dies and Then It’s Immediately Happy Springtime Yay” thing, this might be the biggest tone switch in a Disney movie. But this one’s on purpose and not silly, it’s... intense. Jarring. Disturbing. We go from “goofy marching song about picking up girls lol” to the complete decimation and murder of a whole village and everyone in it. Including children, as is made horribly clear...
9. Aurora Gets Hypnotized - Sleeping Beauty: I don’t even remember this scene at all. The fact that Sleeping Beauty made the list twice makes me want to go watch it again though, seems promising!
8. The Bear - The Fox and the Hound: This movie was immensely fucked up to be honest. Just... everything about it. But yeah the bear was pretty scary ngl
7. Big Ursula - The Little Mermaid: Yeesh. Okay yeah Big Ursula was pretty freaky. Definitely gave me the creeps as a kid. Also the way she dies from getting IMPALED is um... a little dark, perhaps? Just a bit?
6. Pink Elephants - Dumbo: This isn’t exactly creepy, at least not as far as I can see, mostly it looks like they just needed to pad the film out so they decided to uh... put a drug trip scene in. Dumbo is already really short so it would make sense they needed to up the runtime and just told the animators “go ham” and BOY DID THEY EVER
5. The Dip - Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Uh yeah you’d think “death by torture” would be a place Disney wouldn’t go but I guess they’re fine with it actually? Granted this was live-action mostly but... still. Come on. That’s just fucked up.
4. Clayton Dies - Tarzan: I mean they didn’t show it like... really show it but the quick shot of his shadow on the tree is uh. Yikes. I actually missed that detail as a kid but I’m glad I did cause I would have been creeped out!
3. Lampwick Turns Into a Donkey - Pinocchio: Okay see I kinda want to know how THIS movie got rated G as well considering the underage drinking and weird sexual references. But this scene is also uh... disturbing. And actually the whole concept of the “turning kids into donkeys and selling them into eternal slavery” thing is wild and... yeah HOW was this movie rated G again? I know the book was written by some weirdo who wanted to terrify kids into good behavior. Idk why they made a Disney film out of it.
2. Bambi’s Mom Dies - Bambi: I actually don’t remember this scene all that much cause I haven’t seen Bambi in ages. But I know it’s iconic. It comes off as more sad than dark, though, but I guess “sad” kinda ties in with dark so I’ll let it slide.
1. Mufasa Gets Murdered - The Lion King: Okay yeah that’s pretty messed up I’ll admit it. I know it’s Furry Hamlet but let’s be honest we all saw this WAY before we knew what Hamlet was. I sometimes think the Lion King is a bit overrated but I have to admit - the visuals in this scene are AMAZINGLY good.
