You know what? Real talk, If Charles really could not attack after the pit stop like he is saying bc of tire degradation (he did have to go through half the grid after that pit stop) then I am happy there were team orders. Because if charles attacked with tires that were not doing OK and he lost against Carlos on 7 lap newer tires who have not seen an overtake the discourse of Carlos winning wheel to wheel would have been horrendous. It would have been worse than it will be now.
I am not undermining charles or anything. I think he didn't attack not because of the team orders but by his own decision. I think he would have attacked if he had a better grip on his tires. I think the grandiosity of Charles as a driver is exactly in the fact that he can read the situation and feel his car. Feel what he can and cannot do with the car. If the car felt like it could not pass Carlos in that moment I trust Charles that it is true. Any other driver in his position would have gone for it (cough Russel cough). He attacked in Monza but it was the last laps and he essentially had nothing to lose that year. This year he is in a fight with red bull and it was the beginning of the race so burning his tyres even more on a useless overtake would have put him in danger against the mclarens much faster.
If you think about it this was some brilliant management and decision making on Charles side. I am still his fan (shocker!!!) And I still love him to death and I think he made all the right choices today.

I am so here for the Sam Indictments. Like no I love Sam the character of SPN fandom's creation but that's not the Sam we get on the actual show. That guy's just a plot device with a first and last name. Cardboard cutout man. Least character of all time. I once saw someone on here call him "a shock collar that makes Dean do things" and honestly??? Yeah.
i kind of took this as an opportunity to ramble so thank you and also sorry! I really appreciate you sending this ask and having this conversation!
i do want to say that my goal here isn't sam indictments, just noting and sometimes examining the things he actually does and says and believes. and sometimes those result in criticism, and i think that's okay. i've said before that i don't enjoy the all-criticism-all-the-time kind of discussion that we get sometimes, but i think there can be value in occasionally saying "hey, this is a fucked up thing, let's honestly talk about it." sometimes sam does some really fucked up things and it feels like nobody talks about them - and i wonder if people avoid those conversations in order to protect fanon sam/avoid looking at canon sam.
i came back to spn after a while away, and fanon reoriented me to the show. so when i started to rewatch i started looking for the sam everyone was talking about, only to find that that sam does not exist in the show. which, hey, that's fine, we all fanonize to some extent! but sometimes I find myself frustrated with how drastically removed fanon is from canon, especially when fanon directly contradicts canon and it's unclear if people forgot the canon or are intentionally ignoring it.
my preference when examining characters is to look at their actions, behaviors, personality in canon, and try to imagine/understand how that core character would function in different scenarios. and for me, i still have a hard time understanding who "core sam" is. i think core sam is really clearly defined in seasons 1-4, but in a way that still allows for a lot of neutral mask-ism, a lot of blank space to project onto. but the amount of blank space just seems to increase over time, while the core definition seems to get smaller and fuzzier. it becomes incredibly difficult to pick out the throughlines for sam, and the things that make him tick. and it's completely reasonable and fine if people find that compelling, but it is not especially compelling for me personally.
as for the shock collar - holy shit. yeah. i mean. yeah. wow. i have this theory that the show gives dean more and more "plot power" beginning when sam is soulless - and by plot power i mean the ability to make decisions or take actions that advance the plot. someone always has to have plot power, but it shifts further and further out of balance over time until dean is the only one responsible for it. this is frustrating to watch because he doesn't want it at all, and because when you're the only one doing plot you're necessarily going to fuck up more because the story forces you to. so dean takes the brunt of the criticism solely because he's the only one making active choices (even when the choice is inaction). and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's someone guiding his hand or a shock collar forcing him to do it, the blame still lands on him.
I don't know how to summarize but tl;dr sometimes fanon sam is bad especially because there's often no evidence (or even counter-evidence) for the fanon. and sometimes canon sam does fucked up shit AND sometimes canon sam is no one at all. and i think we can acknowledge that without it being "samcrit"!

another day another 2 hour despair sesh on the phone with my mum about Palestine
#red said#apparently the British Society of Friends won't allow an epistle that mentions 'the war in Gaza' in case it upsets 'the Jewish community'#literally MENTIONING THAT THERE IS A WAR#bc mum and the rest of the meeting agreed to remove reference to it starting on October 7th WHICH IT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT there are concerns#about Appearing Antisemitic. by MENTIONING THAT IT'S HAPPENING WITHOUT BLAMING KHAMAS#the justification. apparently. is that we're already on thin ice with The Jewish Community because of Quaker activities in Palestine#which have been largely to do with challenging apartheid and trying to help broker peace processes#so me and mum are both like. ok so are we pro Palestine or pro genocide as an organisation?#because if we think Genocide Is Bad then we should not be afraid to say We Think Genocide Is Bad#and we can also say We Think Antisemitism Is Bad because SHOCK FUCKING HORROR not all Jews represent the State of Israel#in fact basically none of them do#anyway whatever the fuck happened to plain speaking i wanna know#when in history have the faction of Quakers who wanted to never upset anyone been the drivers of change?#wasn't the Quakers going 'obviously we are anti slavery but we shouldn't SAY that in case we upset White People' who we remember positively#they're also changing dates on a lecture Corbyn was due to give in order to avoid accusations of antisemitism#to which i have GOT to ask. 5 months into a genocide and we're STILL giving credence to the idea that criticising Israel is antisemitism?#i will scream until my lungs pop

Lando needs to leave McLaren. He’s not good enough for the team and that has been confirmed.
Jokes on you anon for disrespecting and judging him based on an off weekend he has atm.
He proved time and time again he’s consistent, dedicated and arguably one of the fastest drivers on the grid.
Having a difficult weekend won’t take away anything from him that he has achieved so far.
He’s the main reason McLaren is where it is now. He helped the team forward with his feedback and hard work. With Oscar on board, the team now has two excellent and fast drivers. They can go places together.

honey they All got daddy issues
genuinely so so so intrigued by this. all of their daddy issues have different flavours too, it’s almost poetic.
- lance? daddy was busy making money, never home.
- lando? daddy busy becoming britains 501st richest man
- carlos? having to fill king sainz sr’s footsteps cannot be easy. all spanish eyes on him, the weight he must carry on his fragile back etc
- pierre? literally no clue but something must’ve gone wrong for him to develop such a psychosexual relationship with god and the world
- george? sigh sigh sigh sigh sigh something something daddy look at me something something daddy love me
- max? well. don’t need to open that can of worms do we
- fernando? idk probably killed his father
- lewis? uhh?? well stuff happened and now they’re fine. something something manager first dad second
- charles? sending love. <3
- kevin? something something racing driver dad
- nyck? plot twist! prevailing mummy issues!
- logan? i mean. not going to deep dive into american politics now.
- checo? politician dad. not going to deep dive into mexican politics right now.
the rest of them might arguably be okay. fully confirmed to be without daddy issues is only sebastian vettel simply because norbert could never.

There’s so much wrong with Ross Brawn’s comments I don’t even know where to start.
A sporting director saying the thoughts and opinions of drivers at the back are unimportant is so incredibly disrespectful and incredibly representative of everything that’s wrong in the world today. The thoughts and opinions of those who are succeeding given more emphasis and credence than those who are struggling. People benefiting from a system are unlikely to speak out against it, or be emphatic about wanting to change it, whereas those struggling are more likely to want change and have ideas to fix it. The drivers at the front of the grid won’t see a problem with the Sprint Race because they’re AT THE FRONT?! The people at the back are more likely to notice problems that need fixing to make it fairer for everyone.
George can only speak to his experience, which he did when asked. To then have his personal opinion rebutted with a personal attack is so unprofessional and rude, it’s unbelievable. “We only listen to the opinions of the people at the middle or the front”… the guy finished P11 out of 20 you cannot physically get any more “in the middle” than that. He finished on the podium last race, he’s been best of the rest at every race this season so far. So he has one bad track and suddenly his opinion is irrelevant? He’s the head of the GPDA, and the least he could be shown is some respect from a figurehead of the sport.
And I see people anti-Merc/anti-George laughing about it and thinking it’s great, but if they’ll talk about one of them like it, they’ll talk about any of them like it.
If your sport only operates to accommodate the people at the top, you’re not running a level playing field.
His comments were personally disrespectful to George, and entirely disproportionate to the comment that was made, but they’re also disrespectful to every team who’s considered off the pace. “We don’t care about you if you’re losing” is now an official, on the record line from the guy who’s in charge of the sporting decisions and that should make everyone feel uncomfortable.

It does kill me a little bit that the character who claims not to read picked a 100% human name, but the character who owns a bookshop and works in customer service didn't.

I agree with the sentiment of the 'why would anyone hate Oscar?' post that I keep seeing... But does anyone actually hate Oscar?!
Maybe I've just been lucky not to see any hate on my dash? But everyone I see seems to love him! (As do I. He seems like a very speedy good egg.)

#re: your post in my inbox is overall great and poetic but i very much disagree about verstappen's driving style and preference of understeer#he absolutely heavily favours oversteer#in fact his *preferred* setup is incredibly oversteer#like a whole new world of front end#it doesn't mean he can't cope with understeer - he doesn't like it (nor does charles) but he is brilliant at it (charles too)#i agree that his style going into a corner is quite different from charles - the way the latter throws himself into a corner is...#extremely aggressive#max is razor perfect and charles aims for perfection on the razor edge is more how i would describe it#for me their car preference is very similar - they love snappy front end with extreme responsiveness and have amazing skill to wrestle it#they scorn understeer because that balance through the whole corner is unnecessary for their level of skill but they ROCK at understeer too#in fact the less responsive front end makes the car more unstable to drivers like them#in their earlier days i would stay max's incomparable quality was his internal clock - absolutely unbeatable timing#so his corners/braking/etc are just perfect and he extracts the absolute maximum#charles of that era actually took a more square/straight racing line which is fascinating as it's not the 'ideal racing line'#but he lets the car rotate on entry into the balancing phase of a corner and exits with a straighter line#not at all like max but very fast#i think he has actually adapted as some of the short shifting out of corners may have led to more tire deg back in the day#meanwhile his tire management (ferrari setup disasters aside) has been excellent last season#elle.txt#analysis#technical#car ride conversations with the hubby... this is what we ramble about lmao#btw thank you so much for the message! and so appreciate your love of my fics. it means so much <3 ty!
