Hey, I was wondering if you have a brush recommendation for CSP brushes for Lineart with good line weight? I'm trying to improve the weight of my lines, but I'm having a hard time finding brushes with the flexibility I'm looking for
That's a good question. There are all sorts of ways line weight is used and the right brush is different for each genre and style of drawing, I'd say.
To start: A lot of my lineart brushes are adjusted with slightly LESS brush size dynamics because I always felt like the original default CSP brushes (like the Mapping Pen and G-Pen) gave an unrealistic and uncontrollable amount just based on the their pressure settings.
Some people do use them well for specific styles, so they're not inherently bad. But I definitely think they're not friendly to beginners or people who just wanna pick up a pen and go draw rather than obsess over the precise way they're pushing down on their pen.
Tumblr media
More recent versions of Clip Studio Paint actually came with some new default brushes, including "Real G-Pen", which had pressure settings that felt more right to me. But it's a little noisy so its uses are a bit more specific.
I have a brush set included with EnpitsuP called Superclean Linework. Those are the ones I designed as cleanup brushes for anime-ish looking art. They come in several flavors: Densy, Softie, Smoothy, Sang. I varied them based on how I saw different artists preferred their lines: a bit on the sharp side? Slightly blurry? With a little bit of opacity fade? A little more line variation? Among these, Sang has the largest amount of size response.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ultimately, it may be a little bit of both a subjective experience and depend on what your hand/tablet/driver settings/style preferences are like. If you're having trouble finding a brush for this purpose, I think you should hone in on if you're not finding the right brush because every brush seemed too difficult to control, or you can't seem to get results you like, or you can't find one with a feel that matches the physical tool you're used to.
I think it's also worth noting that some artist's styles also rely a lot on them just changing their brush size setting depending on what part they're drawing. So you may end up needing a brush that has less pressure-size variation than you expect. My recommendation is always to look very closely when learning from someone else's linework example. Try to achieve it yourself side-by-side and see where it doesn't quite match up and ask yourself why. Or ask others why.
Of course, there are a bunch of other "lineweighty" brushes too outside of this genre of mostly-thin lineart.

Can I ask what canvas/export settings you use for your art? It all looks so crisp and beautiful ❤️
H-hey! Thank you so much!! <3
I-- uh, I think that what you mean is my original canvas size? That would be A4 (29,7 x 21 cm, 2480 x 3508 px, 300 DPI), sometimes slightly bigger when I want a bigger detail. Then, for web, I change the size to usually 1000 px the shorter side and whatever happens to be the rest. The bicubic automatic resampling in PS CS6.
I also use my own brushes or G-Pen in csp for lineart. And a lot of lasso tool and gradients, those tend to do sharp looking things to your art too. <3
And SOMETIMES, just sometimes, like 5% of the time, I use the good ol' sharpen tool. <3

Any tips on how to emulate isat's art style?
Hi!
I am but a humble mimic, I sense there are folks who can tell you more accurate details BUT I also love explaining steps I make while making my own art so I'll tell you how I improvised~!
Firstly, I found the wiki (no, not the Fandom one) for all the references. I tried to study how the characters work and I used a lot of just color picking to get the grayscale hues accurate
The lineart is obviously much thinner than what I went for and it seems to use a crispier brush for it to resemble pixel-esque kind of vibe but I wouldn't know which brush it is, I assume it's a custom/adjusted brush!
What I used was "Real G-Pen™" in Clip Studio Paint!
What's fun about this brush (and superior to G-pen brush) is the fun little texture it has that also resembles some of the crispiness but I think the ISAT one has a much finer texture, to give it the aforementioned pixel like vibe.
The thick line I used was just my preference but if you use Real G-Pen with smaller scale and basically only mild pen pressure, you get similar results to the OG style:
Tumblr media
(some of the Sif's images has their lineart thicker in some places to give just a smidge of lineweight feel, enough to work with the depth but I demonstrated here how it looks with basically no pressure applied, it has a bit of that crisp and you can probably get a better one if your canvas was bigger than mine here (just under 1200px lol))
I then color picked from the original images to get the flat colors in!
What I did for shadows is just use the layer set on multiply above all the flat color layers, color pick from the white base gray (that Sif mostly has haha!) and use the that shadow for just about anything. I think I also played around with Overlay in the bigfrin image? you can play with layer settings too and see how it works! You will notice that depending on the mood of the scene in the game and the emotions of the characters take priority over how all of this works.
Tumblr media
This isn't 100% as it is in the official artwork but I rolled with it most of the time!
You can throw some adjustments and extras here and there if you want it to resemble the dynamic party portraits even more (the extra line strokes, adding a bit of weight to the line, the white line strokes on clothes and hair...)
Tumblr media
You essentially end up with something like this!
For the white outline, you can either copy the base color layer (if it covers the whole form) or the lineart layer but move it under the base color and use the border option:
Tumblr media
Regular portraits don't seem to have that outline but I like it a lot personally, it makes the image pop XD
That's basically it! I love how simple and effective it is!
How you stylize the character and how you draw them is all up to you!
Many credits to insertdisc5 since I basically just tried to mimic their style with some liberty sdhjdfg

If you're willing to share, what software do you use to draw? Also do you use any special pens or brushes?
Oh totally! I use clip studio paint! For the longest time i just used the real g-pen that came preinstalled, but i got this brush that i dont believe is up to download anymore (?) from a buddy and adjusted a couple settings to get the brush i use now for my lineart / sketches! And i use a block brush for a lot of rendering, which i also. Cannot find on the store currently FGKFHGKHS

I absolutely love your line work in the Likewise time lapse. may I ask what program/brush / settings you use to achieve it so I can use it for my own lineart ? thank you
ah thank you! but my answer is actually pretty boring! (in an interesting way? i hope?)
i used the default CSP "Pen" > "G-Pen" brush for that. with low stabilisation so i could use my wrist a lot
Tumblr media
the bad news is i don't use any special brush, i just use whatever comes to hand. the good news is, what you're probably noticing is my line weight! and i cheat my line weight! and you can too!
...i just go back over my lines after i'm done doing the outline. and i make it thicker and thinner depending on how much emphasis i decide i need. like this:
when i'm inking, i ink in one specific thickness, THEN i just go over/emphasise the parts i decide need to be thicker.
hopefully this helps! i really don't use any special brushes, i just go back and personally thicken the parts i need to stand out more.
i also use my line weight to imply shadow sometimes. i'm still experimenting :^)
i tend to add details (like fabric stitching, or in above, the softer/minor fur detail) in thinner lines so that they stand out much less than the main outlines. they draw less attention from the eye.
the inside of the ears are like caves with shadow in them, so i go back and add more black there to make it look like they're in more shadow.
the snout of this dog is a main facial feature, AND it's long and thus closer to the camera, so i thicken its lineart at the end to make it draw the eye to the face. i do this with human noses too sometimes
a bonus example of how the "heavy ink" pretends to be shading:
Tumblr media
all i did for these was just add more black, but it really adds to the illusion that the stand-out pieces are casting a shadow
hope this helps somewhat! sorry i couldn't give you a simple brush to use but i really just go chunkify my lines manually. it's kinda fun! if you squint you can catch me doing exactly this on the Likewise timelapse (though because i'm used to doing this i sometimes do it on the fly. i recommend drawing a whole thing in one singular lineweight, then going back to beef-up the lines you think should be more emphasised. the trick is only beefing those bits! it is very tempting to thicken everything. remember you're playing with emphasis! which parts need GUSTO??)

Nezuko WIP: a process
Tumblr media
started out like this. Don’t mind the lines and such. Tried to erase as much of it as possible.
Tumblr media
then gave her a body and a hand (jfc I labored…still labor…over anatomy, mainly hands. Hands will forever be the bane of my art existence.) Also gave her boobies because she is in her demon form, after all. Not sexualizing her, it just be facts. Anyway…
Tumblr media
minor shading here and there (I’m so used to shading from the get-go. It’s bad.)
Tumblr media
Started the lineart. Don’t have a manga pen or whatever legit artists use so it’s the Pilot G-tec in 0.4mm & 0.3mm for me. I fcked up in some spots already 😅
Tumblr media
Keeping the finer details/shading as a placeholder for now. I have to figure out color combos with colored pencils because unlike digital art, I unfortunately can’t undo/erase/add layers 😢 so if I mess up, it’s staying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Made a mini swatch on the other side of the page & tested them on her arm bc who cares abut the arm lol….and because see note above. I have 370 colored pencils in my arsenal (Crayola, Faber-Castell & Prismacolor) so it took a while to sort through colors. They definitely don’t present the same way on paper!
Tumblr media
Looks like the “sweet spot” for the skin base is a mix of peach and beige (Prisma). I hope I’m right 🤞
Tumblr media
I started shading because I have issues.
Tumblr media
I used like…6 different pencils to get the base shading on her body. I am a fiend for blending so cotton buds are my besties rn. I’m gonna go over it again and shade things darker once I’ve laid down the base colors on everything. I’m a visual person and need to see everything laid out first. Idk I’m weird, ok?
also…maybe it’s just me, but she looks an awful lot like Daki here…🥴👀
Tumblr media
…and this is where I’m leaving off because I need to go to sleep. I’m working three night shifts in a row starting tonight so I’ll pick this up when I’m less dead, I guess.
I’ll post the rest of the process next time! Until then, toodles!

Can i ask how u do lineart so well,, it looks so smooth,,
I've always been very big on keeping my lineart clean and smooth! :) I'm very inspired by comic and graphic novel illustration, so naturally, I try to take notes from that sort of aesthetic in a lot of my art.
The short answer is that I just have a lot of practice, and am very picky about how my lineart looks. So, I'll often spend a long time making sure it looks just how I'd like it, before moving on, even if the lines aren't necessarily going to be the focus of the final drawing.
The longer answer kinda depends on what lineart you're asking about! The style of my lineart tends to change to fit whatever mood I'm going for, so I have a lot of different line styles with varying levels of smooth-ness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the super-smooth end of the spectrum, we have these bubbly, cartoony lines! These are a pain to draw, to be honest. But they really contribute to giving that cute look :) For these, I used the Clip Studio Paint G-Pen, with some minor adjustments to the settings, mainly so that there's not too much line width variation. The uniform, thick lines are important for this look! :) Drawing in this style really just a lot of trial and error. Usually when doing lineart, I'll erase away at lines to get them to the right thickness, or even just clean up a sketch and call that lineart, rather than doing lines on a new layer. But, that's a lot harder to do when the line thickness has to stay consistent. So, I end up just drawing the same line 7 times over, un-doing my work and re-doing it until i'm satisfied. Again, it's a pain! I used to draw like this a lot more frequently, but I stopped because I found that other approaches are often a lot more satisfying and rewarding. This is still great, for that cutesy look, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we have what I would affectionately call my ref sheet lines. As much as it's probably a bad idea, I have a habit of just kinda skipping the lining stage of art. I'll just take my sketch, and tidy it up until it's clean enough. But for a drawing where there's only going to be flat colors, that sort of roughness can look sloppy, In my opinion. So, particularly when doing ref sheets, or other art which I don't intend to render, I will actually go through the effort of fully sketching out my idea and lining on a separate layer. The result is a lot cleaner and more deliberate, and looks a lot nicer when colored! Especially if I take the time to color the lineart :) I also really like doing small details with thin lines, particularly body/facial hair, elastic cuffs on clothing, and the seams of clothes, too. I like drawing those little details a lot, and I think they shine the most in my cleaner line style :D
For this, and for most of my lineart, I use these brushes which you can find on the Clip Studio Asset Store:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll bounce back and fourth between these, and Kozmo's Scratchy Scribbler brush, which you can find on Ko-fi!
Additionally, I have a modified G-Pen with a pencil texture that I think I made myself? I don't remember making it, but I also don't know where it came from! So i guess I did, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little more messy than my ref-sheet lines, we have the line style which you probably see most often on my page. As mentioned before, I usually kinda skip the sketch step for these? I don't encourage that, it's a bad habit of mine. But I make it work! I feel like the best way to explain my process with this is to just offer you a timelapse of my lineart process:
I just kinda... go. and it works out! most of the time. lots of cleanup and tweaking, and as you can see with Bdubs and Etho here, sometimes I do actually just. do a sketch and then line over it. So maybe I have no idea what my own process even is, LOL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to completely abandon your original question here's how i don't do smooth lineart! :D In this style, for the most part, I ignore the cleanliness of my lines, only really erasing with the lasso fill tool, when lines get too cluttered to actually read. Usually I'll only go for this when I'm already planning on painting over the lines. Because sometimes an idea doesn't need or want clean lines, and sometimes I just want to paint some values or slap some colors together and call it a day. Love my clean lines, but scratchy, messy lines are fun too! :)
Not sure if any of this really explained how i do smooth lineart, but I sure did talk about lineart for a while. I hope you could find something interesting or insightful in here! :) thanks for the ask, and I hope you have a great day <3

i love your postcard artwork for the zolu playlist SO much!! the colours are so so good and i love the brushwork! i think my favourites are a tie between the one for chikai and the one for simple song <3 also, I was wondering if you could share what brushes you used + how long they took you! looking at your art makes me want to draw again after not doing it for so long
Thank you!! and wow i think this is the first time someone's asked me for my brushes, this is like a digital artist rite of passage!
Answers n screenshots n stuff under cut (I went a little to ham on this oops)
While we're talking settings I want to give a quick PSA to all digital artists:
CHECK UR ASPECT RATIO!!!: (MOST IMPORTANT SETTING BY FAR)
Tumblr media
DO NOT DRAW WITH THIS ALL MESSED UP, IT WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY. It's probably good to check this after every system update (I don't, but, you know...). Windows likes to mess w your shit when it updates.
If you have a really tiny tablet you might need to trace outside a bottle lid or something.
Okay now on to the meat of the post
-- Brush Stuff --
I use Clip Studio Paint. For my playlist drawings I think I only used these brushes (these are my main 3 in general) (p.s. they're all default brushes! but i've adjusted the settings):
Tumblr media
1) Gouache This is most of what i used for the postcards. I nuked Color Stretch because i hate it (it blends colors together as you're painting, like painting over wet paint. I prefer things to look more crisp)
2) Real G-Pen Used this as little as possible, to keep the painterly effect. My preferred fine-detail pen, has a nice crunch to it. I've fine-tuned my setting further in the thickness dynamics / brush size dynamics settings because I mostly use this brush for linework and wanted it to handle really, really naturally and precisely
Tumblr media
The random box is checked by default, probably to make this brush feel more like handling a real inkdip pen (I don't like that)
3) Mapping Pen Least used. I generally keep this brush at the 50-70px range. It's unpleasant to use for detail work (the taper is really fiddly at my tablet pressure settings) but good at filling in large areas very opaque very quickly, with a crisp edge (Also, doesn't lag as much as the gouache brush at large-ish sizes). Has enough wiggle room that it can be used to approximately fill tighter spaces at large brush sizes. Used for when I needed to quickly color over an area that wasn't working or quickly fill in background color that didn't need paintbrush texture. Did not realized the stabilization was set to 10 until just now. I usually turn that waaay down to prevent lag (my laptop isn't very old but it's a sensitive beast)
Other stuff that'll help:
General pen pressure: (under File -> Pen Pressure Settings)
Tumblr media
tweaking how CSPaint handled my pen pressure helped a lot with making lineart look more natural. It's worth messing around with this and trying out different settings for a while to see how they feel.
-- How Long it Takes 2 Draw --
I don't really keep track of how long art takes me from start to finish, and making the playlist drawings was kinda nonlinear 😅 sorry!
-> I started out sketching really quick composition and color ideas as the songs were playing, limiting myself to just the duration of each song (so like, 5 minutes for this part) -> i did that again at least 2 more times per song -> after that, idk. I would work on one pic then get stuck and move to another. Some I could hammer out in like... 5 hours? Some took me upwards of 20 (30?) hours for no real reason (I have "will graham clock" days, where I'll try to draw a face over and over and it'll look really strange, like will graham's clock drawing every time) (this seems to be either a vitamin deficiency or a brainfog inflammation type thing 4 me 😵‍)
I'll use ur two favorites as specific examples: -> Chikai was one that went pretty quickly (with the exception of their arms and the clothing folds there giving me trouble). Probably took 4-6 hours? -> Simple Song had a couple different versions, partially because I initially had the cards all laid out landscape-style, and I decided I actually wanted them all portrait-style & repainted it after it was already done. That aside, the colors /atmosphere on that one gave me trouble and the general composition / perspective had a lot of tweaks (I was trying to figure out if I wanted it to be a kinda flat stylistic perspective or if I wanted it to make more literal sense, trying to figure out what to do with luffy, trying to make him not look Too baby boy sweetie pie). Probably took 7-10 hours...?
In-progress landscape versions: (varying levels of in-progress)
Tumblr media
Misc in-progress of Chikai and Simple Song:
Tumblr media
Simple song looks kinda sequential like this lmao. Luffy looks like he's A-posing and floating away to the boat and then sitting down pleasantly in it. Wonderful. --
Anway -- hope any of that was helpful!

hiii your art always make my day better, so hope u had a good day too. But can I ask what brushes you usually use in your arts? Like the way you use brushes and colors are so good TuT I can't fathom it sometimes. How do u make those kinds of textures. I'm new in this tumbler, so apologies if it's already been answered before. <33
Heyo anon, thanks for asking and no problem! I've answered this a couple of times before across all my platforms, but ig this is a good opportunity to answer and add to my carrd FAQ! <3 Let me break down what I use them for a bit too. (lots of blabbing below so I'll but a read-more tab)
Main:
(sketching) Design pencil (default in CSP, you can probably find it on the assets store because it was from the earlier version of CSP)
(sketching/coloring/general use) G-pen
(sketching/coloring/general use) Dense watercolor (same case as the design pencil)
As for brushes that I use for texturing and painting, I use the Daub brush pack for CSP. My favorites come from the aenigma, pigmento, and basiliscus sets. You can find them on gumroad, or just google! I believe they have brushes for procreate and photoshop too but I think the brush packs aren't the same across platforms.
For making the texture itself, it's kind of a random process that idk how to explain properly lmao. Let me link my Kokomi timelapse so you can see how much I jump around the canvas to carve out the textures:
I like to use different blending modes and layer tons of different colors. The color jitter function is super amazing too for that purpose, but probably shouldn't be overused for the sake of balance. (personally still trying to avoid over-saturating my works with textures tbh)
To be 100000% honest though, I tend to jump around a lot, and I certainly don't use all of those brushes in every piece.
I used to lurk around a lot myself and hoard tons of brushes other artists were using, until I saw a comment of an artist I admire: "sometimes the brush you use really isn't important. Without practice the painting will be ugly."(not the most accurate translation probably because it was written in another language)
After that I had like… an epiphany moment where I really believed them, and drew a Bonanus fanart in June. I made the lineart with a g-pen (which I never used cuz I always thought I'd be somehow inhibiting my creative power using default brushes or something), and the piece ended up blowing up on twt much to my surprise.. LOL. After that, I started to care less about other's brushes and instead of looking for more, try to figure out how I could make cool textures and strokes with the ones I currently had at my disposal.
(said bonanus art)
Tumblr media
This isn't a statement to say "stop looking for other artist's brushes, copying brushes bad, etc" because there is a LOT that you can learn from using other artist's brush inventory.
But you can also have a lot of fun drawing when you focus less about what other's use, and more about what brushes YOU are comfortable using + feels right to you. Sometimes you may even need to tweak them a bit in their brush settings instead of using their default form before they feel comfy for you! It's a matter of exploring and figuring out what works and what doesn't in your workflow, hehe.
Anyways I hope this answer helps as we all continue our art journey together. Sending positive vibes your way anon! <3

YOUR TWST OCS ARE SO PRECIOUS!! And you can mimic the style so well!! I wonder if it is alright ( Since I'm trying to copy the style aswell for my oc ) what program do you use? brush for lineart aswell? any tips on how to do the style? ;o;
Tumblr media
HI! HI! THANK YOU!
I use Mediabang primarly. AND it's free! Sometimes Clipstudio!
For my serious line art and sprites I use the G-pen. Most programs should have one, but there is a close-up above! SO...I am still learning myself but here are MY steps for skin and hair. (CLOTHES ARE ANOTHER BAG OF WORMS) And there may be a better way, but this is MY process and how I use it to create that "Twst" look. ^^ Starting off, your best bet is to study the style in order to draw the characters in a similar way (anime, simple noses, detailed eyes, etc)
1. Lineart. I recommend doing all your character "pieces" in separate folders so you can toggle the hair and clothes and create more outfits for your OC. (like a paper doll!) For Twst, line width varies if you look at the sprites in-game. Some edges are thicker than others but generally, the lines are thin. 2. Flat colors. This depends on you but I recommend knowing your OC's color palette ahead of time or using an existing Twst character's pallette for inspo if you are not sure. 3. Hard shadows. I do these first and I use them sparingly. Under the nose, neck etc. Too many of these tend to look weird and I play with the opacity. 4. Soft shading. I use the airbrush mostly for this and it relies on your painting knowledge and anatomy to know where the proper shadows go. Again, study the art of the game and even the card art which is way more detailed!
This is where it really comes to life, I think. Most characters have many shades of color in their hair so don't be afraid to throw color in there that may not feel right. All characters also have a gradient near the bottom of their hair (for Del it is purple and quite prominent, but for others, it may be subtle) In this step I also add blush, the "lips" and eyeshadow/makeup which all the characters have! (WE ALL WEAR MAKEUP IN THIS SCHOOL
5. Highlights and final details. There are a lot of quirks in this art style and I pointed out a few above! The hair highlights are usually "diamonds", there are always nose and lip highlights, and also there is an extra accent color in the hair. Anyways, it may not be exact bc I have my own style too and it leaks into it when I do these arts. I add way too much blush and I also like to add loose hair, diff face shapes/bodies, and fuller lips. I also use assets from the game for certain sprites and "blend them in" so sometimes it is my art with some editing as well! If there is a funky part that is hard to draw try using assets to help you or guide you. I used ones for Del's ears above and painted over them!
I usually get my assets/bgs from @alchemivich ANYWAY I HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

Kind of tempted to take super cheap doodle comms, cheaper than the doodles I already offer, with the ballpoint-like g pen brush I sketch with, just make them slightly messy g pen and probably no shading except minor hatching? Super fast, low effort, for those who like messy lineart and somewhat clean sketches on paper textures. Would work for nice warmups, too.
Similar to the donation doodles people used to do on ko-fi all the time before they had commissions as a function on there. Those would also make for nice warmups. I'm guessing max $20, but that would be more complex posing or 2 characters

hey fable!! <3 4, 6, and 14 for the ask game! :3c
Hey Luce! :3 <3
4. What type of colors do you like using in your art? (And why?)
Bright colours because they give me all the happy feels and I’m big on drawing comic style expressions, but also, they just feel so DCA to me. I think darker more muted colours are good for a more subtle moody look too.
6.  What type of brushes do you usually use?
For most of my pics I use an HB pencil brush with wet edges, and it helps me draw lines more naturally (I always used to draw pencil/ink comics traditionally before I got my iPad so I’m used to my mind kind of filling in the blank space of sketchy lines, I do use a g pen brush to refine lines for super detailed lineart or commissions but most of my art and comics on here use a pencil brush)
14. Funniest thing that happened to you during the drawing process?
A few things asfhjgz (like the sheer amount of times I’ve just been drawing something and getting it completely wrong before thinking “hey wouldn’t it be funny if this character was doing this instead?”) but I’ll stick to one of the more recent ones for now. My Sun comic with the moondrops in fact only exists because my faulty iPad deleted it halfway through me drawing up the concept, I was thinking the idea was kind of silly and was considering scrapping or shelving it but when my iPad decided to trash it I redid the whole thing and coloured it out of spite.

«Homeress» study
Digital Illustration
17.11.22
The first speck of snow had its descent the day before this artwork was made. I was running out of ideas and given that I haven’t been going through erudite processes in my previous ones— posting nothing but “quickies” or doodles on other sites, I decided to make at least today something that would at least make something worth exerting effort to. Though another mishap during the process was that I was suffering from an artblock due to the number of commissions I was currently handling which resulted in my created juices being extracted until its last pint. I then decided to seek some aid on pinterest and stumbled upon Mogusa Shirose’s viral photo. “This is definitely perfect for the season!” was what I thought as soon as my eyes laid on it. Given that it has been ages since the last time I did a fully-rendered colored painting, I was uncertain how the result would turn out. But I trusted the process as well as did some tricks which could facilitate the realisation of this artwork even though the organisation of layers were undoubtedly all over the place. Nevertheless, the experience throughout the study was both broadening and therapeutic. I definitely used the lasso tool to my hearts content for time efficiency as well as a softer paint brush as my sketch/lineart which was very new to me as I am much more used to the classic G-pen. Perhaps a few refinements in the eyes as well as a bit of cleaning of the sketchy lines would have enhanced its quality. If only I didn’t run out of patience (>﹏<)
I dedicate this to my beloved, whose warm homely embrace will be missed throughout this cold blue season.
I also dedicate this to all the blue bird developpers who finally spread their wings.

could i ask which brush you're using in your last Dimma painting? i've been staring n' studying it in wonder for hours and i still haven't figured it out (i've switched to CPS recently too and i hate it here lol)
I'm assuming you're referencing the Mucha style one, but i use the same brushes all the time anyways.
I use the transparent watercolor for sketching and the dense watercolor for lineart. They used to be default brushes for CSP, but you can download them here:
I fiddled with the settings for these two a bit as well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also use the G-pen for flat colors and the soft airbrush for gradient, with the default settings.
Honestly, i'm still trying to find brushes i'm comfy with in CSP and struggling, but so far, these are the one i prefer.
Hope this answers your question!

i don’t normally do this type of post, i never have reason to, but i wanted to write down or go relatively in-depth with the process of that last piece so i can hopefully replicate the results (or if anyone was curious). and also because i think the initial sketch is hilarious:
Tumblr media
before i put a cut on this monstrosity of a post, these are the lines and flats; there were a few details that got lost under the shading so now you can see the gradients on her tentacles, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now let’s get crack a lackin’
composition-wise i had a vague idea that i wanted both her hands in the shot, a prominent feature of her smile, and the lettering in the bottom left-hand corner; of which the hardest part was placing both her hands until i had the idea of her leaning against her shoulder.
since i swapped to csp from sai, my sketches have gotten looser and simpler in style, which isn’t a bad thing but wasn’t what i wanted out of this pic. i especially wanted to evoke the way i used to draw marlo’s teeth and did my best to replicate the brush i used to sketch in sai, and then i drew the rest of the owl. (and refined the text.)
(on god, there are no layers in-between these two.)
Tumblr media
i did not have to line this from here but i wanted to, so i did. i think that took the bulk of the time spent on this... somewhere around 7 to 9 hours?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wasn’t thinking about line-weight all that much, really, apart from mimicking the heavier and thicker areas of the sketch—normally i would have a light-source in mind already, and thin the lines which would be under direct light and thicken the ones in the shadows, but i really didn’t think i was gonna render this yet. for as long as it takes lineart is the least-complicated step so... that’s that.
for clarity, i won’t include this version in the process, but for all my artfight attacks thus far i’ve duplicated the lineart layer and used some effect to add some soft red rim to it all. in this instance the duplicated layer is a soft vivid red on color burn and blurred a little; the main lineart is on hard light so it can show against the darker colors.
Tumblr media
the flats have a few things going on; they’re a mix of my own color choices (for example, her main skin tone is the same color i used to sketch) and eyedropped, which i don’t normally do but you just can’t get better than dolly’s native colors imo. instead, the skin colors from her ref made up the highlights and flush points. i was gonna do the same thing on her tentacles but gave up because i couldn’t figure it out LOL. most everything was magic wand’d for ease of selection, though i like to color by hand.
oooookay, so now we get into shading. i wasn’t planning on doing anything extra beyond nab a few extra points with a rough excuse for ‘fully shaded’, but i started screwing around with layer modes and, well, that was all she wrote.
Tumblr media
first step: saturated teal on 100% multiply. (i think it was a color i eyedropped from one of splatoon’s assets for my last zine piece, actually.) i blocked it in chunks and refined it with the g-pen and eraser, celshading everything like i normally do, and then stumbled face-first into blending instead. clip’s default gouache blender for that, at various sizes depending how broad or subtle i wanted the blend. i sort of kept the shadows crisp near where they were cast (i.e. her arm against her tentacle) and faded on wider planes like her arms & chest but mostly i did whatever i liked.
Tumblr media
duplicated the layer and set it on top, a bright red on 100% saturation. i use the HSV sliders the most and the red was, itself, 100 saturation. i wanted extra vibrancy without having to literally paint with more saturated colors and this was the best solution i could come up with.
Tumblr media
now the light source; a linear burn layer on 23% opacity, a rich gold color (i think one of the ones i’ve used for ness’ ink at some point); cool shadows mean a warm light source. normally i would magic wand the celshading and invert selection, but since i’d already painted everything, i ... did the same and expanded the selection significantly, overlapping with the saturation layer/‘subsurface scattering’, and softened the edges down. not recommended, will make sure to think ahead next time lmao.
Tumblr media
now we start to get complicated and i started throwing things to find if they stick. this one’s a soft light layer with pink and blue airbushed on; the pink to add further vibrancy and depth to her skin, accentuate the flush points from above, and create color variation and vibrancy in her tentacles. the blue got used for a rough approximation of bounce light and to create a bit more depth in the shadows. i wasn’t super precise with the placement, but it isn’t obvious either way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the top is a very pale tan on soft light, there’s not a lot to this; it’s very broad highlights and i just kinda did whatever in terms of the shapes.
the bottom is the addition of another vivid light layer, a similar if not the same pale tan airbrushed over and around the broader gloss. i layered it heavier where that gloss was more pronounced, especially closest to the light source, but bled it out farther to create the illusion of... i don’t know if you would call it refraction or subsurface scattering again, but some extra depth. there’s also a few speckles to dampen the impact of the shine on her nose and lips & accentuate the shine of her teeth.
and that’s all of it! i made this whole thing up as i went along but i am Definitely gonna attempt recreating and refining it. if you read this far, thank you so much, i am handing you a plate of homemade sugar cookies

hello Virgil when you have the time you should explain your coloring and lining process
they way i do both lines and ESPECIALLY color changes basically every time i draw but yeah sure! im also p bad at explaining myself so idk if this is gonna make sense to anyone but me!
(first off dont draw on pure white canvases!! itll psyche you out and intimidate you because of the blank canvas, also its fucking eye bleeding!! i like going with a medium/light grey but ive seen people use a beige or light brown too just anything but pure white. also helps to just get SOMETHING onto the page if your having trouble w/ artblock, doesnt matter if its good it just has to be something u can work with. trust the process 100% and if it doesnt turn out good theres no shame in restarting from scratch, at least the idea is out of your head and easier to work through what was wrong)
my sketches are usually super messy and i go through like two to four different layers of refining it before starting lineart, and with lineart i usually use either a simple hard round brush or a sketchier one if im doing painting? my go-to ones are the default G-Pen in clip studio edited a bit to fit how i like pen pressure and 1834113 and 1761353 in the asset store but i like messing w/ whatever i can find on there and whatever feels fun at the time lmao so its not very consistent
Tumblr media
i try and keep my lines pretty thin on the inside and thicker on the outer edge? as well as adding bits of cross-hatching and hatching both in the lines and when i go in with shading!
i keep my lineart brushes pretty minimal with the pen pressure as im not the best with my pen control and just change the size of pen as i go lmao. More prevalent when i'm doing super clean lines for comics and not sketchy ones like this for painting but its generally the same, i'm not the neatest person when it comes to lines
I draw a lot of the individual parts (head, facial features, hair, clothes, hands, etc.) on separate layers so if something looks wrong i can either wipe the layer entirely or go in with the transform tool and not mess with the rest of the lineart in the process lol
(also i saw someone keep the eyes and facial features visible under the hair but erase where they meet the lines for the hair? and just yoinked it for myself because it looks super nice lmao.)
Tumblr media
starting colors is almost always the same, where i just go in and block in the base color for each part (skin, hair, clothes, etc.) on a separate layer to make going back and editing colors a lot easier. with painting like here i also go in and add basic shading, mostly around the skin! usually i add a darker & warmer color around the cheeks, nose, eyes, fingertips and joints as well as in places where theres shading like under the head and under the nose.
Tumblr media
also in the darkest parts of the shading like under the head/neck and under the nose i like to add a light bluish/purpleish color very lightly as a bounce light! it doesnt always fit with the piece but it does look very nice when i can make it fit so i try to remember to do that lol.
(I dont take many progress shots or timelapses so i apologize for not having the best reference images lmao)
if im doing painting, after finishing the base colors & light shading i put everything ive done into one folder and make a clipping mask over top of it and paint over it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i usually add more detailed shading + heavier highlights on places like the nose and edges of the skin showing to make it look nice and shiny lol
(i dont have any recent drawings i can show progress pics of but just trust me on this) if im doing cell shading though i do the same thing with putting the lineart and colors into a layer, but add a multiply layer on top of it and pick a pretty saturated color to go in with the shading. if i have a background i try and keep in mind what colors are in the background and what the lighting situation is to make sure the characters blend into the background more realistically. also airbrush tool and the add glow layer is your best friend in this situation
Tumblr media
usually after that i go back and color the line art! I pick the darkest color in a part of the drawing like the clothes or hair, make it warmer and darker and go in on the innermost parts of the lineart with it and keep a lot of the outer lines black for contrast
then i just go completely fucking ham with overlay layers and gradient maps lmao, they ARE the fucking best and are usually what i use to finish off a drawing lol.
usually i use a combination of just fucking with the default "sky" graidents in clip studio or one set i got from the asset store (1814319) on a soft light layer at like, 10-30 opacity because it gives it a REALLY nice look. again just keep in mind the lighting situation (darker night? daylight? funky bright colors?) and just go until it looks good lol.
that's basically it? though tbh i tend to just grab onto whatever technique or tip i saw on tiktok or someone on youtube do and use that, as well as changing how i color hair/skin depending on what i think looks nice at the time. none of my shit is consistent what so ever so i just kinda change things or try new brushes/coloring styles on the fly if i think it looks nice lmao. pure essence of fuck around and find out every time i open clip studio
really hope this makes sense to anyone but me and hope this was helpful!
