I just realized that Sanji accidentally got the whole crew addicted to nicotine through second hand smoking. Like, during WCI everyone was So Anxious, obviously because Sanji was gone, but also because the are literally addicted to Sanji's presence (the nicotine, the smell of food, his cologne, everything about him)

Them accidentally getting a nicotine addiction is actually so funny✨

I bet when Chopper heard everyone's complaints about how they felt after Sanji left he was like 'uh oh'. Usopp complains about how he's so anxious he's stress eating and Zoro is suddenly soo aggressive with everyone and can't fall asleep, the whole crew feels like they're going to starve to death without him, their nerves are all completely fried and after a bit Chopper puts the pieces together and is like 'Damn, that bitch gave us all an addiction.'

It also got me thinking about poor Zoro.. You know those girls that joke about putting nicotine patches on their partners after sex ? That's what Sanji has basically done to him. Because after every encounter they have Sanji lights a cigarette and blows the first hit in his face to be a dick. Neither of them ever thought about the long term consequences, Zoro just thinks it's hot and Sanji thinks it's funny.

One of the main reasons Zoro didn't go to WCI with Luffy is because he was the one with the worst withdraw symptoms. Like the trip to Zou from Dressrosa was already really shitty because he was having trouble. But then they find out Sanji's gone and everything and Zoro is like 'Yeah, I'm gonna have to sit this one out.' Because they were already pushing it letting Luffy go on what is supposed to be a stealth mission, bringing Zoro when he's like a second away from going apeshit over Sanji withdraws would be a terrible idea.

I made a post a little while ago about how I find Gale's arc much more satisfying when you're dating him, and in a similar (but opposite, I guess) vein I like Astarion's arc much more when you never sleep with him.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that is a little uncomfortable with the idea of building a relationship off of sleeping with someone who did it to manipulate you into looking after him, and I also feel like letting that happen (to me personally) feels like you reaffirm that world-view to an extent. Even at the end of it all, there is reason for him to believe that his bad intentions that night really were the reason you got roped into liking him. He doesn't have to "get on his back for breadcrumbs" anymore, but he still did, and it still worked and secured him the only person who's ever cared about him. I find it much more narratively satisfying for Tav to have never been attracted to him, but to care deeply for him and watch out for him regardless. It means that there's no way for Astarion to worry he tricked Tav into liking him, his initial come-on didn't even work. Tav supported him despite having literally zero stake in it, because the world has good people in it. Because people can care for him for more than his appearance or utility.

I think the dialogue if you break up with him at the confession also reaffirms this; he says he's had thousands of lovers, but never a friend. I think what Astarion needs, more than to fall in love with the first person he ever bit (what with vampirism and blood-drinking being a long standing metaphor for sexuality, making Astarion basically a Vampire Virgin which I want to make a proper post about), are people who are unphased by his attempts to play to his assets, and yet care for him fiercely anyway.

Plus so many of his cutscene dialogues portray such a great friendship. His gossipy little dialogue that triggers the day after you sleep with someone else, just asking out of curiosity and becoming invested if you tell him it was good. Describing/complimenting his appearance and ending it by saying he's not quite as good-looking as [insert love interest], which he approves of. Engaging in a silly little hypothetical conversation about which of the others you think would taste best. Astarion (by virtue of having the most dialogue in general) has the most dialogue about the other companions, which I think gives him this "best friend you talk shit with" vibe that I absolutely love. He's the bestie that you go to and share your dating horror stories with, who'll roll his eyes and pat you awkwardly on the back as you cry while also planning a murder about it.

Also I (personally) find him deeply unsexy. So this is largely wish-fulfillment lol.

tobacco smoker!Corey Cunningham HCs

I've made a couple posts about this already but I headcanon Corey as a cigarette smoker and here's what kind of smoker I think he is!

Warnings: smoking obviously, self destruction and suicidal ideation (points 4 and 5)

Corey starts smoking after the accident with Jeremy. When he's in jail waiting for his bail to be set, someone offers him a cig. He's apprehensive but his nerves are so shot, he'll accept any help he can get to be even just a little calmer. After his first drag he coughs so hard he almost throws up. But he figures it out and is shocked it does actually make him feel a little better.

Now he smokes alone in his room while Joan and Ronald are at work, or late at night after they go to sleep. His mom smokes like a chimney and he sneaks a cigarette out of her pack once in a while. He hides it until he has some alone time and then he smokes it hanging halfway out the window so the smoke doesn't linger in his room. He always flushes the butt down the toilet, washes his hands extremely well, and uses mouthwash after too, to make sure he's not leaving evidence.

He tries hard to keep it just for when he really can't handle things, he knows that it's addictive and if he let himself, he'd smoke as much as Joan does, and if she ever noticed even the one a month he steals, he'd never hear the end of it. Denying himself, almost like edging, until he has a day bad enough that he gives in. Then, heart racing, he waits for Joan to leave that little box unattended, so he can slide one out and tuck it in his pocket. He walks around with it in there, getting a kick out of his rebellion that makes him feel better even before he lights up.

When he starts working at the garage, everyone who works there smokes, and he knows Ronald won't snitch if he takes a smoke break at work, since he'll get in just as much trouble with Joan as Corey will. So it's their secret together now, one of the only ways they bond as step-father and step-son.

Corey hears someone call Marlboro Reds "cowboy killers," and he likes the way that sounds, so he switches to smoking those. As a little kid cowboys had kinda been his thing, and he still holds cowboys up as the ideal men in ways he doesn't even realize. He can't live like a cowboy, but maybe he can die like one.

Dying is definitely a part of the smoking for him. It's (novelization) canon that he thinks about dying and is mildly suicidal but scared to act on his feelings. He hangs over the railing of the stairs in the abandoned Allen house and wants to fall like Jeremy did but he can't make himself let go. Lighting up is easy, tho. Knowing every cigarette makes his life shorter is comforting to him. He's not interested in immortality.

Corey religiously flips a lucky cigarette. Upper left corner of the box. First thing he does with every new pack, he takes one out and flips it around, putting it back in filter side down. It's almost always the last one he smokes, but on days when the residents of Haddonfield are really on one, when Willy the Kid will not shut the fuck up about the cult of Thorn, he smokes his lucky early. He does not flip a new one until the next pack.

The first time Corey feels affinity for fire is the first time he strikes a lighter. Way before he ever smoked, way before the accident, he found a lighter in the crack in his seat on the bus. He quietly put it in his backpack and when he got home he sat behind his house burning blades of grass and little pieces of paper. Keeping the lighter lit for so long the spark wheel got too hot to touch. He burned his thumb on it and spent a week trying to keep his hands palm down around Joan so she wouldn't notice the wound and flip her shit.

When he starts doing yard work for people in Haddonfield, he's stoked raking the leaves or collecting branches after a tornado because it means he gets to light a fire. He loves nursing the flames from a tiny smolder to a huge inferno, watching them devour the yard waste, standing too close to the heat until his face and hands look sunburned and he has to step away.

When he starts working at the garage he realizes the welding tasks are his favorites because he gets to use giant torches. Every time he goes through the steps to turn the torch on, turning all the nozzles open and using the striker, it's a thrill. It never gets old having the sparks rain down on him. In the novelization it says he thinks about turning the torch on other things in his life, and the thought doesn't have any specifics but it brings him comfort. He wants to burn it all down even before he meets Allyson.

After he meets Michael, he smokes openly in front of Joan, her freak outs have no power over him anymore. He tears the filters off. He's not careful about making sure the cherry's all the way out before he flicks his butts anymore, let it catch a piece of trash and start a wildfire. Everyone would be better off if it did.

He tells himself if Terry Tramer comes around while he's got a lit cigarette, he'll put it out right between that prick's eyes. Let him walk around with a permanent mark staining his reputation just like Corey does. Then the stars all align when he knocks Terry out and the torch is right there. He can do so much better than just a little cigarette burn now.

So there's a discourse on twitter going about how louis's smoking habit is dangerous and how it can have very damaging side effects uk with having history of cancer in his family. It bugs me how as fans they can't maintain a boundary.. But i am an anxious mess thinking about it.. I've always been regarding this topic. But now it has exceeded.. How do you manage thoughts like this as a doctor? When you constantly come across cases related to smoking and with the whole situation with lou. Like do you have any tips.?

Oh, this is a very good question. I’m sorry you’re feeling so overwhelmed right now. I think when you know how diseases work, you see things differently. It’s a bit easier to discriminate the cases: how many cigarettes per day? How long have you been smocking? How old are you? Is this an hereditarian case or were there other preventable factors? We are trained to come to diagnosis. You have to know the clinical history, the clinical presentation, side effects or literally anything in order to come to a conclusion. It comes across arrogant to find a diagnosis based on one thing such as smocking. Smocking is bad, of course it is. What else is new? It’s not just about cancer either. Smoke is the risk factor in every other issues (voice, breathing, stamina etc). But I know how hard it can be to quit too.

Fans have to know their boundaries here. I think fandom anxiety comes from the uncertainty around this topic (does he takes blood tests periodically for example? Is he getting checked every once in a while? Does he have a family medicine doctor who is there for him? We don’t know). The fact is, we don’t know much except for what we see or we are told every once in a while. I think no one has ever had THE talk with Louis about it, but that’s very normal for a young healthy man. The thing with smocking is that has been always so socially accepted it makes it harder to see the struggles of your health because of it. I’ve seen surgeons smocking in front of my two eyes! And I was like “how dare you? You literally operate these things inside people’s bodies!” but you know how humans are. You feel invincible and by the time you realise you are not, the cardiologist has already prescribed anti-hypertension and beta-blockers drugs.

My suggestion is to not take this burden on you. It’s not your job, not your responsibility as a fan (or as a doctor, by the way). Also stay away from twitter if you can. It’s very easy to be overwhelmed by the discourse over there. When something good happens you are surrounded by so much excitement, but it happens with controversial things too. The fact is when we go online and read stuff from other blogs or accounts, we don’t always match the energy. That’s absolutely normal, because we are individuals living our real life in different ways and in different moments. When discourses like this start, we are left with so many questions and worries coming from all the sides and that’s what you want to avoid. Stay away from any thing can make you feel uncomfortable. It doesn’t matter how little it is. Filter tags, block, say you’re not interested. Do whatever it takes to preserve your experience of the fandom. Today, this discourse feels like an unnecessary concern. Try not to stress on this thinking how being their health counsellor is not your role.

Anyway, this is a reminder to not smoke ffs. Here’s a thread I wrote a couple of years ago for the No Tobacco Day WHO campaign on the Louies science account, in case you’d want to spread some knowledge about the bad effects of smocking. :)
