“Fine. If you miss your flight I’m not driving you back home, you can call a taxi. I’m supposed to be meeting someone for dinner and I’m not going to be any later than you’ve already made me.”

“Sure, Wilson. We’ll see.” His eyes flashed mischievously. “I won’t miss my flight, but if I did I bet you’d be there to drive me home. You’re like that. You love to be needed and I’ll be the neediest cripple in a 20 mile radius, and trapped in an airport.”

“Shut up, House. Get your house key out I’m not turning off the car when we get there. And haul ass, double your dose of Vicodin after, just get back in the car before I drive away.”

The passport was on the coffee table where house had left it, and he was back in the car fast enough that he saw the surprised lift of Wilson’s eyebrows before he schooled them back into a put upon scowl.

Wilson wove through lanes of traffic, zipped down the off ramp and threw the car into park outside the first airline door at the airport.

“Good luck.” He sighed, the squint of his eye and the twitch of his fingers on the wheel betraying just how stressed he was by proxy for House.

“See ya in a couple days. And untwist your panties, Wilson, I’ll make it with plenty of time.”

Deep dive #2: Jessica Biel’s relationships timeline and all the interconnections

Disclaimer: This is done for fun. No hate, no drama, just some Hollyweirdness. It’s not a detailed timeline but more like key moments with some fun or surprising connections and anecdotes (to me at least). It’s just not possible to do one boyfriend timeline without mentionning another one. No famous people won’t be mentionned, neither most tabloids speculations. People already twist things, so it can’t be worse (right?). And please don’t judge my english.

Spring 1997: During the interview with All-Stars Magazine, 15 years old JessicaBiel shared that she only had two "sort of" boyfriends, both of whom were 17.

All-stars: In real life, do you ever date older guys? Jessica: I don’t really date very many people. I’ve had two boyfriends kind of! Both of them have been 17, so they’re usually older.

Spring 1998: 16 years old Jessica Biel is filming her second movie “I’ll be Home for Christmas” with Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Alberta and Vancouver, Canada. She met Adam LaVorgna who play the bad boy Eddie, they start dating while filming the movie. Even thought Adam is not very well known, he has been acting since he is 10. Nsync’s christmas song was used during the end credit of the movie. FYI The movie is available on Disney+.

April 1, 1999: On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jessica said that Adam Lavorgna was her first real boyfriend. She said he is very smart and go to Avon Old Farms high school in Connecticut.

August 12, 1999: Jessica Biel and Adam Lavorgna did their first red carpet together at Barry Watson’s movie premiere "Teaching Mrs.Tingle". From what I have seen, it was Adam’s first red carpet of his career.

Fall 1999: 7th Heaven producers were looking for an actor to play Jessica’s character Mary Camden boyfriend and asked her if she had any suggestion. She suggested her then boyfriend Adam. His first appearance as Robbie Palmer in 7th Heaven was in season 4, Episode 10 aired on November 29, 1999. When the producers first called his team, they refused it without talking to Adam. He had to call them to tell them to accept it. He didn’t care for the show but just wanted to be with Jessica and make easy money. Adam shared that story on the Worst Ever Podcast in 2019.

January 2000: Lance Bass from Nsync guest-starred in 7th Heaven as Rick Palmer (Adam LaVorgna character’s brother). He appeared in season 4 episode 13 that aired on January 30, 2000.

I have a friend who worked for a publicist for some of the actors on The WB, such as [”7th Heaven” star] Beverley Mitchell and the people from ”Popular.” So I was having dinner with her and Beverley, and Beverley was talking about how she wanted a boyfriend this season, and I said, ”I’ll do it!” and she was like, ”Okay!” Source: Entertainment Weekly, January 2000

So of course while filming that episode Jessica was asked by Enews about Nsync. She said she knew about them but don’t own any of their CDs and they shared their differents experiences.

March 2000: Jessica did the scandalous Gear Magazine photoshoot. (She quickly regretted doing that photoshoot and shared how horrible the experience was). Adam was not happy about it. There were some tensions between them while she was spending time with the interviewer.

During the time I spent with her, the Boyfriend (whom she asks not to name) is constant presence, though he’s more than 3,000 miles away in Boston. What he thinks  and how he’ll react take up a large portion of Jesse’s thoughts. He’s nervous at her being perceived as sex idol, and having a writer from men’s magazine spend several days with her is not helping. Over the course of those days, the phone keeps ringing - the Boyfriend - and it’s stressing her. [...] Jesse and I are supposed to hook up the first night I'm in L.A., and I wait for the phone to ring at my hotel room. It never does. [...] The next morning, we talk on the phone. It turns out Jesse had a big fight with the Boyfriend on the phone, and, no longer able to deal, she went to her friend's house and spent the night. Summer 2000: When it was time for Jessica to leave the show to attend college on the East Coast with Adam (Jessica at Tufts University and Adam at Boston College), the producers of 7th Heaven contacted Adam and offered him a regular role for Season 5. Adam agreed, dropped out of college to be in Los Angeles for filming, while Jessica, who needed a break, still went to college in Massachusetts.

With hindsight, Adam regretted accepting the offer because now he feels like the producers asked him to comeback for season 5 to hit back at Jessica for leaving the show. Jessica was still working on the show during her school break, only appeared in few episodes and her scenes were very brief. Contrary to what was said in the medias, Jessica was never fired from the show. Aaron Spelling made it clear she still had 2 years left in her contract. They destroyed her character thought.

2000(?): Jessica Biel, Adam LaVorgna, Chris Evans and a group of friends attend a party all together!!

April 2001: Jessica Biel and Adam LaVorgna did a photoshoot together for Movieline Magazine. They denied dating. Adam revealed in the Worst Ever podcast in 2019 that their PR told them to deny they were dating. (off topic: When I was a kid I had the green dress picture as poster from one of my teen mag)

August 12, 2001: Jessica Biel and Adam LaVorgna did their last red carpet together at The Teen Choice Awards. 7th Heaven won best drama award that day. Adam missed the moment they went on stage, and Barry asked where is he?

August 22, 2001: Adam attended Jessica’s movie premiere “Summer Catch” but they didn’t take pictures together.

October 5, 2001: The Enquirer is reporting that Adam LaVorgna went to Promises rehab in Malibu for cocaine and Vicodin addiction.

The Enquirer is reporting that Jessica Biel's boyfriend and 7th Heaven co-star [Adam LaVorgna] checked himself into Promises rehab in Malibu after Jessica and the show's producers both gave the cocaine and Vicodin addict  an ultimatum. An insider told the taboid, "The cocaine and pills drastically  changed his demeanor." After the two talked him into rehab, he appears greatful as the friend added, "Right now he's thanking God for Jessica and the show's  producers. They saved his livelihood - and his life." Adam revealed in the Worst Ever Podcast in 2019, he started drinking at 10/11yo and had Opioid addiction (and then maybe doing heroin, I didn’t understand exactly what he said). He went to rehab multiple times and the first two times were paid by 7th Heaven producer, Aaron Spelling.

In the interviews with Elle Magazine and Cosmopolitan in 2005, Jessica mentioned, without explicitly stating his name, that the relationship was not healthy. Also mentionned in the London (2005) movie behind the scene.

October 10, 2001: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans did their first red carpet appearance at the wrap party of her movie “The Rules of Attraction”. Unless I'm wrong, Chris’ first red carpet of his career were also with Jessica. There is no information about how they met. In the interview with Animal Fair on January 2003, it is mentionned they were friends before dating. In Chris' workout video for Not Another Teen Movie, you can see Jessica in January 2002 commenting on the evolution of his body after filming the movie. They were not dating yet when he did the movie.

Jessica was back full time to L.A after one year at Tufts University. She did another semester later in 2002.

Jessica is still under her 7th Heaven contract and is working daily with Adam LaVorgna on season 6. 7th Heaven showrunner who was still holding grudge against her, made Mary desperate to win Robbie back while he keep rejecting her.

Before writing this post, I didn’t realize that it seems like Jessica and Adam never lived in the same state until they broke up.

Somehow Adam and Chris built a strong friendship for over 20 years. Adam was Chris plus-one at the 2016 Golden Globes. 💁‍♀️

November 11, 2002: The last 7th Heaven episode starring Adam aired, season 7 episode 8. There were no official explanation of why Adam left, neither off screen nor on screen at that time. Adam later revealed in a interview with belief.net that the Hollywood life (easy money, barely working, drugs, partying) is not for him, he is unable to control him and left California for the East Coast. Neither Jessica, nor the cast ever mentionned his addiction.

Jessica’s initial contract being over after season 6, only apperared in 5 out of 22 episodes of season 7. They had only 2 episodes in common.

2002: Jessica and Chris shared the way they feel about their relationship

January 31, 2003: Jessica Biel attended Justin Timberlake 22nd birthday party with Beverley Mitchell, her future husband Michael and a friend. Justin’s exes Br*tn*y Sp*ars and Alyssa Milano were also there. (Random fact: Adam and Alyssa families are very close, Adam call her “his cousin”)

Beverley Mitchell used to hang out a lot with the Nsync guys in the early 2000s. She participated at many of their Challenge For The Children charity events in Miami from 2000 to 2005. David Gallagher also took part of it. Beverley became pretty close to the guys. Joey Fatone also attended her wedding in Italy in 2008, and she was often seen with Lance Bass. Beverley shared during a recent podcast  with Lance Bass (@ 56min)  that she asked Jessica multiple times to come to thoses events and that she is unlike them actually good at basketball but she always refused.

During a podcast with Tia Mowry, Beverley revealed that Jessica used to tease her for hanging out with Nsync. Tia also shared a story about a Teen People party she was with Jessica where Nsync were performing. Beverley also mentionned that strange moment Justin’s mom asked her about Jessica at the 2007 Golden Globes.

October 2003: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans filmed the movie “Cellular” in Santa Monica, Callifornia. The director of the movie, David R. Ellis, asked Chris to ask Jessica to play the small girlfriend role. He also revealed they had broken up after filming the movie but were back together during the press tour for the movie.

Interviewer: They are still dating? Ellis: They were dating when we made the film and then they took a little break and now they're [back]. She's here. She was just here for lunch with Chris. Now they're back together. They just took a little hiatus.

Interviewer: At the time, was it just a coincidence that she was cast? Ellis: No. What happened was I knew Chris was going out with her, and I said, "Why don't you show this to Jess and see what she thinks. November 2003 to February 2004: Jessica Biel is training and then filming the caothic Blade: Trinity in Vancouver, Canada with Ryan Reynolds and kind of with Wesley Snipes.

From Febuary to June 2004: Jessica Biel is filming Stealth with Jamie Foxx and Josh Lucas in Australia and Thailand.

January 27, 2004: At the Perfect Score movie premiere, Chris Evans confirmed their break up (unknow source)

June 30, 2004: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans confirmed back together. They were pictured together in Santa Monica.

September 2004: During press tour of Cellular, Chris shared that they decided to be more low key and how hurtful it could be to read about heartache in magazines.

Evans says he and Biel, whom he describes as "such a sweet girl," have agreed to keep their dating private. "Relationships are difficult," he says. "All that emotion and pain. I can't imagine opening a magazine and reading about my heartache at the newsstand. I said, 'Let's not be seen at clubs being loud and obnoxious. Let's not go to premieres or parties. July 2005: In the July issue of Cosmopolitan, Jessica Biel denied rumors that she and Chris Evans were engaged but they do talk about it.

March 2006: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans are pictured together for the last time as a couple while walking Jessica’s newley adopted pitbull Tina.

June 30 2006: Wenn.com reports that Jessica Biel and Chris Evans broke up.

Evans, who starred in Fantastic Four, is currently filming The Nanny Diaries with Scarlett Johansson. A source tells the US edition of OK! magazine that Evans has recently been spotted out in New York City with brunette public relations executive. Meanwhile 24-year-old Biel has been in Los Angeles filming Next with Nicolas Cage.            

October 2006 : Life & Style Weekly reports that Jessica is seeing Adam Levine. They have never been seen together or ever talked about each other. Zero detail about how or where they met. Sound 100% bullshit.

November 6, 2006: TMZ spotted Jessica walking her dog with Zach Braff. Yep that was before she eat him (it’s a Bojack Horseman reference). They never talked about each other and have never been spotted together after that.

November 28, 2006: People reports that Jessica and Derek Jeter are cozying up all over Las Vegas. They also have been spotted together at Social Hollywood on Nov. 15.

December 7, 2006: According US weekly and In Touch, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake were at Social Hollywood. It is kind of confirmed by Justin on his book.

From January 1 to January 5, 2007: Jessica is pictured with Derek Jeter in Puerto Rico for the first and the last time. They have not been spotted together after that.

January 5, 2007: Gossip site reports that Scarlett Johansson and Justin Timberlake were seen chatting away at his movie "Alpha Dog" party.

January 8, 2007: Perez Hilton reports on his blog that Jessica Biel was at Justin Timberlake first show of his Futusex/Lovesound tour. Confirmed again on his book released in 2018.

My first show for the FutureSex/LoveSounds tour was in San Diego. A friend who also knew Jess was going to come to the show, and she asked me, “What if I was to bring a certain somebody?” I said, “I could be into that.” Patience may not be my strong suit but, apparently, playing coy is. My friend brought her to the show. They were with a whole crew of girls, and they all came into the dressing room and hung out. After the show, they were going to go back to LA, and I was going on to Anaheim. I asked them if they wanted to come with me. “I’ll give you a ride, you can come on my bus. January 11, 2007: Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz confirmed tabloids speculations and released a break up statement via People. There were already rumors of Justin and Cameron break up. Pagesix reported that Justin spent the new year at Kate Hudson party and Cameron with her family in Vail, Colorado.

January 15, 2007: Golden Globes Night! Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, both presenters that night, see each other for the first time since his San Diego show as planned and got flirty. They were just not expecting 35yo Cameron Diaz public tantrum!

March 5, 2007: During the fashion week, Jessica Biel and Scarlett Johansson are seen shopping together in Paris, France. Jessica and Scarlett have known each other since they are teens. They did a photoshoot together for Teen People Magazine in 1998.

April 9, 2007: People reports that Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds spend the week end together

April 2007: Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake decide to be exclusive. Justin’s 1st US leg tour ended on March 29, 2007. They spend a month together and they decide to be exclusive before touring Europe from April 24 to July 10. His world tour ended in December 2007.

May 13, 2007: Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake officially confirmed, they are pictured together for the first time in Manchester, UK. Jessica joined him during his tour.

July 7, 2007: Jessica Biel and Chris Evans who broke up a year before attended the wedding of a friend in Santa Barbara, California. It doesn’t seem to be someone from the industry, there were no other celebrity. Jessica explained on the Late show of Jay Leno that paparazzi followed her from her Brentwood house and she had to negociate with them. She posed for them in exchange of them leaving and stop bothering the wedding.

June 2008:  Intouch reports that Jessica Biel is moving with Justin Timberlake in his Hollywood Hills house but she will still keep her Brentwood house. She was rarely seen around Brentwood after this.

July 11, 2008: Eonline reports that Jessica, Justin and Chris were all at the opening of the nightclub Kress in Los Angeles but didn’t interact.

Justin Timberlake and girlfriend Jessica Biel made a rare public outing, complete with public displays of affection Friday night in Hollywood at the official opening of Kress, which was crawling with celebs. Timberlake and Biel arrived around 11:30 p.m. at the four-floor club on Hollywood Blvd., where a reserved cabana on the roof deck awaited them. "They're very happy, and very much together," an onlooker told E! We're sure that was evident to Chris Evans, Biel's ex-boyfriend (they dated from 2001-2005). September 2008: People reports that Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds wed in Canada

Who is Kinie Ger in Jujustu Kaisen AU?

Kinie Ger is Taz’s demon ( where the default version is where her older brother makes a contract with to give her powers and to protect her. ) In this verse, Kinie Ger was sealed within Taz since she is born because of ascentry and through reincarnation. 

Note: Whether it is default or verse, this here is for information when roleplaying with rp characters from jujutsu kaisen. Still trying to figure this out. But please feel free to give me advice, suggestion or ask me any questions regarding this post. 

Based on the stories origin 1 and origin 2 that gives me inspiration. 

Not much different from the default version, Kinie Ger is a devil that preys on innocents especially stronger ones to hunt for their meat. 

Kinie Ger is a quoll hybird monster. Half-man and half-quoll. She cannot remember how she came to be but knows that she is born from the dark magic of the dark shamans. After hunting down so many for her own bloodlust, a crow shaman and owl shaman seals her away into a human being, tying her to a human soul to keep the monster sealed. But ever since she was sealed by shamans back in her homeland, her diet was changed. In this case, instead of flesh and bone, it’s cursed energy to keep her awake. Whether it’s cursed spirits, Jujustu sorcerers, and curse users, she must eat them to maintain and regain strength making sure her hunt continues. 

Kinie Ger was within Taz as her vessel since Kinie Ger is passed down to many generations, moving across the world because of her ancestry dated back in Australia many centuries ago or was reincarnted into the same soul over centuries. Nobody knows what happened during her time. But Kinie Ger appears a few times in other regions of the world as history goes on. But as quickly as she wakes up, she goes back to sleep after a feast. 

Today in the modern world, the vessel fell to Taz who unknowingly required this ancient demonic cursed spirit. When she came to Tokyo with her friends on a vacation, Kinie Ger begins to stir in its sleep when sniffing out the amount of cursed energy. It’s time to feast. 

Abilities:

Demonic Possession - Taz and Kinie swaps bodies together. Taz who has two yellow marks on her right cheek. With Kinie Ger, orange marks appeared on both sides of her cheek, on her arms and legs. She has white lines on her back and around her neck. Unlike Taz’s cheerful and innocent nature, Kinie Ger is aggressive and almost feral, living out her desires. 

Supernatural Strength - Can easily tear and break bones and rocks. 

Supernatural Speed - Kinie Ger can run up and travel to 15 miles per hour since she’s a demonic quoll. 

Spear Master - Just like the legends, Kinie Ger masters the spear as her weapon. It is extension of herself. 

Excellent Climber - Kinie Ger is good at climbing and scale trees and buildings with ease.

Night vision - Kinie Ger has good eyesight especially for the night time.

Super Senses - Kinie Ger is good at sniffing out cursed energy and differentiate which ones are the weakest and the strongest.  She can also pick up sounds as well. 

Curse Eater - Kinie Ger eats in order to replenish her own energy. This is her strength and also her weakness. If she can’t consume any cursed energy or doesn’t have enough energy within 1 hour and 30 minutes, she will be put back to sleep and Taz will regain control. Therefore, she saves her cursed energy over time. Using curse energy can make her sleepy. She uses cursed manipulation to conjure up spears, her own dark shikigami, and transforms into a monster. The more she eats, the more powerful she becomes and she stays awake. 

Jujutsu Curse Techniques:

Dark Spear - Kinie Ger’s favorite weapon is the spear conjured up of her own cursed energy. She is the master of the spear when she was human and such.

Dark Boomerang - Long range weapon that she can throw. Just like a real boomerang, this curved flat weapon when thrown comes back to the wielder. Anyone in its way will be cut. 

Storage Space - Since Kinie Ger used to be a marsupial, she has a special storage to accommodate five items to save. The items are in her innate domain.

Tribe from the Plains; Kinfolk: Kinie Ger has the ability to conjure shikigami in the form of her fellow shadowy quoll man monsters carrying sticks. These feral creatures go wild and their main directive is to hunt down enemies. Kinie Ger can command with the order to hunt and capture such as hunting down cursed spirits and taking it to her. However, these shikigami are Grade 3 level to Semi Grade 2. They are fast but not too durable as they are used for surprise attacks and distraction.

Feeder In The Dream: Kinie Ger can attack anyone in their dreams when asleep. Of course she can’t kill them since she needs cursed energy to be released so she feeds it on. Her attacks can leave cursed injuries. This happens when anyone staying in the same room as Taz when the prey falls asleep. However it only depends how strong it is. 

Totemic Beast: Kinie Ger uses her cursed energy to build an armor or rather form outside transforming into a huge a quoll-like monster as big as an elephant. This monster has smoky black fur, red tribal red marks around its glowing yellow eyes, and orange-white spots on its fur.  In this form, she can go on a rampage and can morph into a ball to bulldoze anything that stands in her way.

Domain Expansion: Kinie’s domain expansion can be formed two ways.

1. Great Tasmania Plains

The first one can be a bubble where the environment is changed to the plains with tall grass and trees where there is the red sky with a yellow sun. Using the shikigami, it is guarantee hit but for Kinie Ger’s sick pleasure. She makes it 90% guarantee hit while 10% miss  to give her prey some leeway just to make the hunt more fun. Giving them a handicap. This exhausts her after using it. This is the normal expansion.

2. Maxiumun Techinque: Dreamtime Plains

The second form is much more dangerous after experimenting. This is separating the soul from the body and transports the soul into her innate domain, sending the body to sleep while the soul is awake in her own mirror world. This can exhaust Kinie Ger greatly, draining up cursed energy and it lasts 10 minute. This is used to trap her strongest prey in and makes sure to kill ( or devour ) them before the time limit is up. To activate it, she has to touch the other's soul to do so.

She likes to trick her prey into thinking they’re awake but they’re not. Anything hurts the soul can hurts the body once it is send back. But it is not always the case. 

However Kinie Ger possessing Taz’s body is also vulnerable since Taz can wake up or is sleeping.

In the default version:

Taz is switched with Kinie Ger whenever she senses massive amounts of dark energy. Kinie Ger’s purpose to cursed energy? Is to devour and hunt for more game! 

Kinie can be aggressive with her hunt and hates anyone interrupting her.

October 1. First time in like forever that we actually made our departure date!! It was iffy for a bit as 8 days ago someone who is not me caught COVID. He had a rough 4 or 5 days and is feeling much better, albeit tired, for the last few days. I was lucky, I hope, that I do not get COVID. I got the latest COVID shot yesterday. I am feeling a bit tired and achy from the shot and Advil is taking care of the slight discomfort.

We said our goodbyes to our house around 7:15 and headed to the marina, just a couple of miles away.

Goodbye house. Goodbye car. I will see you again in late December. 😢

Our dock mate Paula and last year’s cruising friend from the same marina were there to see us begin our 3200 mile, round trip journey to Key West and back home. Dennis was a huge help in line handling. I really appreciated that!

Will we still be smiling in April/May when we return? You bet we will! After 7 months of living on Molly D ( no hotels!!) we will be so happy to be back home. Any and all disagreements, trip snafus and so on will be forgotten by then.

On our transit today we were fortunate to see 2 submarines! One was just beginning their deployment and the other was ending theirs. For security reasons, the AIS contact lists all naval contacts as “Naval War Ship”. In David’s 40 year career as an engineer/supervisor, he more than likely helped to engineer the building of one perhaps both of those subs. He probably went on their sea trials as well. I am immensely proud of David’s part in building ships for our nation’s defense. I am equally proud of the shipbuilders, non-shipbuilders, and government personnel who tirelessly work on our nation’s defense. As there is a security zone in place around US Naval ships, it is impossible to get a good photo. If you have very good eyes, you will see the sail (conning tower) looming on the left and the rudder just above the water on the right. Can’t see them? I’m having difficulty and I took the photo!

Compared to the start of our trip last year, today’s weather was nearly perfect! We had enough wind to sail for nearly 3 hours! Our speed, thanks to the agreeable current topped the upper 7 to low 8 knots. Sweet! Last year we had a near gale blowing, occasional rain, and 3’ plus seas on the bow for 3 FULL DAYS!! We had a schedule to meet (we usually stay away from schedules) so we proceeded through the snot for 3 days and then some. David, myself and Molly D were not happy campers the entire snotty time.

The worst thing to happened to us today were the dreaded biting flies. They were with us for over 2 hours. David used an “electric” tennis racket fly swatter and I used a sturdy old fashioned fly swatter. David zapped more flies than I had swatted. The sizzling sound of the flies sizzling on the racket was so satisfying! Am I sorry for the flies?? Hell no! As cruel as it may seem to swat and kill biting flies , we were happy that there were fewer flies to bite us!

Today’s travel was 56.5 miles, a good day! Tomorrow we will transit to Atlantic Highlands (Sandy Hook, NJ). We will leave between 7:30 and 8:00. Tomorrow’s transit will be 68 miles. This transit distance will be doable, as Molly D will have a favorable current with her. For those of you who are interested, you can follow Molly D on www.MarineTraffic.com. Playing “Naked”

I feel there’s this misconception by laymen that jazz musicians are just playing complete nonsense that has no point, structure or coherence.  And in a lot of cases that’s true.

Think of jazz as finance.

Both are hugely reaching terms that cover a lot of ground, and are kind of hard to define in a singular “this is it” term.  They also share a lot of high-level intellectual stuff that can be off-putting, and purveyors of these industries (lol at calling jazz an industry) have little problem tossing around concepts that seem very complex and difficult to grasp.  Which makes them playgrounds for bullshit artists and conmen.

Conmen like John Scofield, for example.

When you take away all the surrounding noise, all the help from bandmates or clever arrangements.  When you take away tools and leave a musician with just their hands and mind...that’s playing naked.  Watch the video at the top.

Then watch this...

It doesn’t blow my mind to see shcucksters playing solo gigs with two amps (mic’d and including a gigantic wedge monitor for some reason...) and two pedal boards, one reserved for looping yourself.  It doesn’t blow my mind because these guys are everywhere...go to some rib burn off or some county fair and I guarantee you see some dude with an acoustic, a mic, and a quarter mile of pedals at his feet.

There ain’t shit “naked” about this.  Well, there kinda is...because his aimless melodies are more exposed than they typically are.

And I’ll admit, there’s some decent stuff going on here at first...almost like he’s restrained...oh wait, nope.  Go to the 3:00 mark and watch him vomit all over himself.  Listen for at least 30 seconds.

When you play “naked,” it can be intimidating because all those things that help fill up space...bass, drums, piano and horns...are gone.  Some guys fill this up with parlor tricks like slapping your guitar and making all this percussive bullshit...which is lame as fuck.

But, again to the video at the top...there are no parlor tricks here.  No loopers or giant pedal boards.  Sure, there’s a drummer, but his job here is to follow and mimic exactly what Metheny does.  There’s no support here for Metheny...he’s just got his hands and mind.

And what he does with it is incredible.  Compare what he’s doing melodically to what Scofield is attempting to do with great difficulty...those melodies are clear and defined, they’re coherent and each one blends into the other cohesively.  You can tell where he is in the harmony...even though there isn’t harmony there.  You can tell because his melody is so clearly defining it, which is what a musician is supposed to do, instead of just puke all over the floor and charge people to watch.

Seriously, that Scofield video pisses me off.  Why not just call it “I’m too cheap to hire a band, but I have a bloated lifestyle to maintain?”

The master of playing “naked” is my idol, Joe Pass.  You listen to him...yea, he’s fucking with the harmony and stretching sections out...but you know exactly where he is in the song, you can hear the melody in your head, and...if you catch yourself tapping your foot...you’ll likely match up with him during one of the many cuts where they cut from his Tommy Bahama shirt to show him tapping his old man walking shoes.  The man had groove.

The whole point is this...

If you’re going to be naked in public, you might as well invite the audience along with you.  Otherwise you’re just some weirdo making dumb sounds until the cops show up.

I’ve found a nice niche playing solo guitar in this vein and have probably done 15-20 gigs like this now since last October.  It was nerve-wracking at first, let me tell you.  Just standing there like some jamoke...and that’s before you play a note.

But once you get used to it, it’s a fucking blast.  People seem to like this shit more, and get more into it, than when I was playing rock gigs blasting ear drums out for drunk people.  Again tho...that’s only if you’re inviting them along to join in enjoying the music.

Because good god, I’d never get hired again if I showed up and did shit like Scofield in that video above.  The only thing keeping the crowd there is the fact that they paid, and if they walked out, they know they’d be wasting their money.  Because everything he’s playing is metaphorically no different than him standing on a stage with his dick hanging out while giving two blazing middle fingers to the audience.

It’s not hard...ok let me amend this...it’s incredibly hard to learn how to play melody that clearly outlines the harmony while still sounding interesting, and it’s even harder to add in chords and basslines at the same time.  THAT SAID...if you wanna play “naked,” and play “naked” well, this is what you gotta do.

Otherwise the audience will be even more lost than they were with bass, drums and piano.  And also, if you don’t, people will start to think all jazz musicians are conmen like Scofield.

5/24/22 - SAR Missions #2 & 3, and D&D with Dorf and Josiah

I slept in, made myself some breakfast. Lazied around the house, sat on the couch in my pajamas, made myself some box mac & cheese for lunch.

At 1:23 PM, I got a text from Zion Dispatch, asking for help with a Narrows carryout. I called in right away, saying that I was available. They told me to meet “now” at the EOC inside Zion. I quickly got my gear together (drybags, canyoneering boots, neoprene socks, and water bottles), threw it in my car, and drove to the EOC.

The mission was to drive to Temple of Sinawava, hike the Riverside Walk, then carry the raft catamaran 1.5 miles up from the end of the Riverside Walk, to where the patient, who was a 40-year-old woman with an ankle injury, was waiting with the hasty team. Then, we’d inflate and assemble the raft catamaran, load the patient on it, and get them down the Virgin River and back to the Temple of Sinawava parking lot.

As we drove up Zion Canyon, there was another SAR mission that appeared on the West Rim Trail, below Scout’s Lookout, near Refrigerator Canyon. We were diverted there; we stopped at the Grotto, but only a team of two EMTs hiked up to meet that patient. The rest of our team got back in the vehicles and continued up Zion Canyon to the Temple of Sinawava. We parked the cars there, got the chariot, the litter, and the two packs containing the disassembled raft catamaran, and we started hiking up the Riverside Walk towards the Narrows. Along the trail, someone said to us, “are you here to rescue the pregnant woman?” I thought to myself, “well, no, we’re actually here to rescue someone else.” Sure enough, about 3/4 of a mile up the Riverside Walk, we came across a 7-months-pregnant woman who’d fallen and hurt both of her knees and her belly. It was decided that we’d help the pregnant woman, and then come back to do the original Narrows rescue. We dropped our packs, leaving the raft catamaran on the side of the path. We loaded her up on her side (pregnant women shouldn’t be transported on their backs) on the litter, attached the litter to the chariot, and we wheeled her out to the Temple of Sinawava parking lot, where there was an ambulance waiting. After the woman was loaded up in a vehicle, we refilled our water bottles, and then we hiked back up the Riverside Walk to where we’d left the raft catamaran packs. We grabbed the gear that we’d left there, and then we continued on to the end of the Riverside Walk. We ditched the chariot, and we started hiking up the Narrows.

When we reached the patient, we quickly loaded her up in the litter, inflated the pontoons, assembled the raft catamaran, loaded the litter onto the raft catamaran, and we started moving. I was one of the six people that held onto the raft catamaran and walked it downriver. We were really efficient and made really good time. We got back to the start of the Narrows/the end of the Riverside Walk, and hiked back to the Temple of Sinawava parking lot. We were in the parking lot at 7:15 PM. We headed back to the EOC for a debrief, which we finished at 8:12 PM. Three callouts today, two missions for me: the 7-months-pregnant woman on the Riverside Walk, and the 40-year-old woman who was 1.5 miles up the Narrows.

I was home by 8:25 PM, and I sent a message to Dorf and Josiah (with who I was supposed to have started playing D&D at 7 PM) apologizing for being 1.5 hours late to D&D, but also asking to still play some D&D. They both agreed, and we hopped on a video chat together. We played D&D together from 8:30 PM until 10:15 PM!

I’m grateful to be a part of Zion Search and Rescue. I’m grateful that I can go on these missions, help someone else out, get some exercise, be in the outdoors, and get paid for it. I’m grateful that I’m physically fit enough to participate in the SARs. I’m grateful to the other Zion SAR members that have shown me and taught me things about SARs and gear. I’m grateful to Josiah and Dorf for giving me some leniency and for being flexible when I showed up 1.5 hours late to our D&D session. I’m grateful for productive and fulfilling days.

Woke up at about a quarter after 4. After about 20 minutes of farting around, I realized I had to get to the pet store before they closed at 5. They had been undergoing renovations so I assumed I had to call and order over the phone. Picked up the phone and it’s battery was down to below 20%, although I had plugged it in. Of course, I had pulled the plug out of the socket on the power strip when I plugged it in the night before. I called the pet store and found out that they had reopened. I told Louie that he had to wait to eat and got dressed and rushed out the door. It was 10 to 5. I make it in time, due largely to the fact that they also renovated their operating hours and are now open until 6. Got cat food, went to the gas station and bought 5 lottery tickets. Got back home and instead of going in, I got in the car and drove to Su Casa Tacqueria. May as well be efficient and get everything I need in the same excursion. On the way, two guys in SUV’s were fighting each other by speeding and then cutting each other off. More of the pointless, lawless crap we put up with in this town. One of them almost hit me.

Blah Blah Blah, Fed the cat, ate breakfast. Blah Blah Blah. Got caught up on Social Media. It was refreshing, earlier, to be sitting in the taco place, waiting for my burrito and quesadilla, without having my phone handy to amuse myself.  

Last night went ok, but the late start probably costed me. I also jinxed myself. My first customers were two guys who hailed originally from Burlington, Vermont. We talked as I drove them from Crush to Ground Kontrol. At the end of the ride they wanted to know about contacting me directly. Since I had already picked up a manageable group of regular personals, I wasn’t too keen on adding to it. They were nice enough, but they went on to explain the business potential of having people call me directly. As If I hadn’t been doing this for 15 years. I told them that the problem is that eventually everyone starts to call at the exact same time. The jinx has been set.

My next customer was a former trucker from Silverton, Oregon who had moved up here to a nursing home after suffering a stroke. She was in a wheelchair and had been waiting about an hour for a ride. I picker her up at the North bar on SE 50th and Division and drove her to the Sapphire Nursing Home on SE 136th, just north of Foster Road. She had ventured out just to get out of the nursing home, and it seemed like it might have been her first foray out into Portland since the stroke. When we pulled into the parking lot, I drove her to a back gate so that she could sneak in, but an orderly saw us and directed me to wheel her over to the main entrance. I told the orderly that she had ordered a cab over an hour ago, but they couldn’t find one that could take her. I don’t think he really gave a shit that I was vouching for her. I know how that works.

Business was hardly any better after that. Just dragging. At about 2:30, I took an order at Union Jacks, that came through on the app. It went all the way to 87th near Fremont.  While en route, “N” called. She usually gets picked up at Union Jacks, but tonight she was working at Diablo, which is 3 miles further away. About 2 minutes later, Frank number 2 texts me to say he’ll be out in 15 minutes. “D” texts me to say he’ll be out in 15 minutes. And there you have it---I’ve been jinxed. Three regulars call at once, and there’s no amount of hustling I can do to handle all 3. I tell Frank number 2 that it’ll be 45 minutes and I encourage him to let me know if he finds another way. Same with “D.” Both of them let me know that while I’m on my way to get “N,” that they got other rides.

Within the last couple of weeks, I’ve been giving away prints of my photos to passengers. I only offer them to regulars and people who show an obvious interest in art. It’s turned out (so far) to be one of my better ideas. Everyone seems to have appreciated the idea, and in turn others have offered art back to me. Last night, when I dropped “N” off, she made me wait while she came back out with a metallic print of a concert photo she took. Frank number 2 gave me a cd of one of his metal bands.

I finished my shift taking photos of the half-moon peeking between some trees in the parking lot at RCC. My last fare was the same two guys from Vermont that I picked up at the start of the night. Ground Kontrol had been closed when they got there. I dropped them off close in on SE 13th near Burnside. I welcomed them to call my number directly if they needed a ride.
