hello anon! <3 i'm sorry this got buried in my inbox.

i'm not a very good teacher (and i'm just an average gifmaker lol) therefore i'm not gonna attempt to make a tutorial. also, i was already here on tumblr several years ago before i came back so my gifmaking knowledge might be rusty. there are many great tutorials out there already, tho! for example, i just found this one and this.

but the basics are just: -install your tools! (i use kmplayer and photoshop) -download the highest video quality possible (never use anything less than 1080p!) -learn about tumblr's gif limits and post dimensions -think about your set's layout so you'll know how to crop/resize your gifs -COLOOOOR! (this is the most tedious part but it's also up to you how you'll do it. for me, i play around with curves, brightness, selective color, color balance, and levels adjustment layers. i fuck this up sometimes tho because i get lazy 😅) -optional: add text/ captions. you can follow this tutorial for that. (make sure you've already resized your gif before adding the text!) -go crazy and have fun!

baby jonny and max duo or mike and max duo???

because both are so cute(and chaotic) and i’m having a hard time choosing because i don’t think jonny likes mike, little or not:>

he saw mike being a meanie to nancy one day and ever since he doesn’t like him, no matter how many times nancy tries to convince him mike isn’t mean he was just having a bad episode and took it out on nancy but nope, he was mean to momma so he can’t play with him ever(｀Д´)

so mike sits max down one day and tells it to her straight

“ me or jonny? who’s it gonna be?”

and she doesn’t know what to do because she loves both of them and she likes playing with jonny and being cuddle buddies, but she also likes matching with mike and terrorizing the party

“ i dunno, why can’t i have both?”

“ because you can’t!”

“ why not?”

this just continues until a cg breaks them up since they’ll go all day if someone doesn’t stop them:>

n mike backs off like "alright, sorry; i'll go ask someone else." mike initially thinks he's just being clingy but after seeing literally everyone else interact with nancy without jonny fervently stating she's his mama, not theirs, he realizes that is ... not the case (´⌒｀;)

(i find it funny u say jonny doesn't like mike tho, bc me & @jjtheresidentbaby have a concept where those two play the same three games together all the time & max is SOOO TIRED of it, the fact they play nothing else & everyone is okay w it drives her MAD!! she's so TIRED of saving ducky & mr rabbit from a block tower, PLEASE can they just go outside!!!)

but anyways ,,, i CANNOT choose!! baby jonny & max r the cutest little cuddle buddy, whisper-shout duo, but mikey & maxie are just CHAOS, running around driving everyone insane with their antics!! they're special in their own unique ways ... so NO, hotline, i will NOT choose and i don't wanna p(╬ Ò ‸ Ó)q /lh

BUT! they're definitely has been a time where jonny, max, & mike are all little together bc of sleepovers with the gang, & mike n jonny are trying to pretty much hog max all to themselves like she's a type of toy HEIEHEKE ,, jonny's tugging one arm bc he's in a cuddly coloring mood & mike is on the other arm trying to get her to partake in the perfect prank for dustin & lucas!!

do you have any advice on character design?

Advice, sure, good advice? Probably not XD There‘s some stuff I picked up from other places, plus just personal vibes? So ig see if anything works for you hopefully (but there’s no guarantee this is. Actually being anything good. Other sources are a lot better. But anyways):

If you block them out and just look at the silhouettes and can’t distinguish them anymore, you could change some outfits, hair, body type, whatever to give them some more pep

Turns out same face syndrome can be avoided by just switching up the eye shape (though actually having different face/nose-shapes is always cool)

Checking your own garderobe or people you see outside for possible outfits/styles/accessories/etc.

You can use shapes and colors to create focal points (like dark hair in a curve to frame a light face if you wanna have the face in focus, or colored patterns to direct the eyes, or add some interest). Stuff like that.

Look at some characters you think look cool and see what parts you like and/or analyze their shapes n colors and stuff

If your character is does certain things or something’s really important to them, then their look might reflect that? Like, a band T-shirt, sticker of their favorite football team, memento from a deceased loved one, haircut or injuries from a dangerous job, paint stains somewhere cuz they’re a painter, etc.. Something that makes the character of the character read from their design

Generally, shape language (roundness tends to be seen as kind/cute/soft/…, triangles as sharp/fast/dangerous/…, squares as steadfast/grounding/relatable/…,) so using those can help in getting across the characters‘ personality (or pulling a uno reverse) and mixing them a bit can also make it more interesting for the eye. (Though you can totally do smth different; SpongeBob’s all circle vibes but is mainly using squares; the :D vibes mostly come across through his eyes and cheeks being round, shape-language-wise)

Coloooors. The general rule I’ve seen floating around seems to be 1 main shade, 1 secondary shade, 1 accent color (though there’s enough cool designs out there which have more, especially accent colors) so the main point here seems to be more in color theory and distribution of colors. Unless it’s your goal, if every color got the same amount of space it might look a bit…chaotic or samey (depends on placement)? At the very least, there’s less of a direction for your eyes to rest in. So having a bunch of colors that’re the main ones and then accent ones that’re less there/just for details, could help? Can’t really explain it but hopefully this makes sense XD

Also color value. You could totally do everything in one shade and still have variety by switching up the darkness of the shades instead. A good way to check this is putting your character in a greyscale filter (though, also- does not necessarily apply; lots to cool designs that ignore this and still look cool)

Color theory’s the same as shape language, just with colors

If some part seems bland/empty, and it’s not on purpose to guide the eye, you could throw in a pattern to spice it up/break up the shape a bit, so it’s not just a solid flat thing? (Absolutely not sure about this one though, even less so than the rest here)

Also totally layering of clothes for some neat stuff . Like, if a character seems like a cinnamon roll but is a bit evil actually, you can make the top layers of their outfit in pastel to seem all cute, but then some barely visible inner layer in a dark color, to mirror what’s "hidden underneath”. Storytelling through design and such

Uhh. Yeah. Again, these might not. Actually be any good. Might be counterproductive, even. Plus, none of these are rules or anything, just…guideline stuff that I commonly saw? There’s lots of ways to break/ignore them without it being any worse for it (Case in point: SpongeBob again.) Hope it does help a bit, though :}
