#and dans reaction to it on twitter is great
Text
Celeb Bake-Off is currently airing, and after talking to @rebeccasbiscuits I felt I had to make good on my thoughts and actually write a headcanon for this.
Behold, The Great AFC Richmond Bake-Off.
Ted: Brings boxes of biscuits for everyone on the first day. Bakes peppernut cookies and MoKan pie. First Star Baker of the series.
Rebecca: Reveals she made Nora's most recent birthday cake, recreates it for a showstopper. Uses rose water at least once. Ted & Rebecca check on each other a lot.
Keeley: Puts edible glitter on everything. EVERYTHING. Lots of antics with Noel because he admires the whimsy. Wins Star Baker for a unicorn-themed croquembouche showstopper.
Roy: Almost everything he says is bleeped out. Slams the oven door off its hinges by accident in a moment of frustration. Lots of close-ups of his hands (the Bake-Off camera crew knows what we want). One of his showstoppers is inspired by Phoebe. Roy's Yoga Mums tweet about him obsessively.
Higgins: Technical baker. Talks to the camera a lot. Jazz scats while he waits for the oven to ping.
Isaac: Extremely enthusiastic about everything he bakes. Even when it goes horribly wrong.
Jamie: Absolute disaster but really confident about it. Literally every meme on the Bake-Off Reactions Instagram is about him. Bakes Manchester Tarts for the signature. Every time he's in last place he asks if he's going home, even though it's a charity event with no eliminations.
Beard: The underdog. Secretly brilliant baker. Lots of traditional English bakes. Sends a photo of every bake to Jane. Wins Star Baker twice in a row.
Sam: Incorporates lots of family recipes into his bakes. Taste tests his bakes and does a little dance when he's happy with it. Twitter loves him (naturally).
Jan Maas: Scientific baker. Gets flour everywhere. Surprisingly aggressive kneading. Constantly asking for time calls.
Colin: Extremely Welsh bakes. Dan Beasley-Harling's 'gay bread' has got nothing on Colin's (which is also about Welsh independence).
Dani: Dessert sculpture made from churros entitled 'mucho, mucho joy'. Hype man of the tent. Offers to help carry people's showstoppers.

Wanted to share this thread from Dan Jurgens on Twitter:
"Really appreciate the reaction to the Booster Gold HBO Max news. Seems like just yesterday that I sat down with Dick Giordano (1984) to explain the idea of a time traveling hero who played the celeb/media game, trying to make up for the crimes and mistakes he'd made."
"Also went through the humorous aspects, explaining that unlike the rest of the DCU (where all the heroes were bland and perfect), that Booster would try to do the right thing along the way. But, if he happened to make a few bucks in the process… what’s wrong with that?"
"And, while Booster would generally solve the problem, it'd be awkward. Superman catches a crashing plane and lands it at the airport. Booster clips a few buildings along the way, damaging them and the plane and puts it the middle of town, creating a three day traffic jam."
"Everyone survives, but the results aren’t perfect. It’s the way things go for most of us, sometimes often, in our own lives, which is part of BG's charm. With the way social media and celebrity culture have grown, he's more relevant now than when issue #1 appeared in 1985."
"I didn't have anything written up. Not even a sketch. Just a vision, and Dick went for it on the spot. Said, "Give me something on paper for legal so we can get contracts started," and with a handshake, told me I could start working. Great man and glad he saw the potential!"

that damn shake
Was watching "On Context" by Dan Olsen and a particular line stuck with me;
"In the context of Capitalism, is there any act of rebellion, or is it all just making the machines of Commerce work in favor of your interests?"
This made me think of that one Disco Elysium passage. "Capital has the ability to subsume all critiques into itself. Even those who would *critique* capital end up *reinforcing* it instead."
Anyway, let me talk about furries and the Grimace Shake.
Some context - Before Twitter imploded, the Grimace Shake was a meme that was going around. McDonald's released a shake promoting the birthday of the chain's co-mascot, Grimace. I don't know how it tastes, and I don't think its quality really had a hand in its popularity. It swiftly became a meme when people started making absurdist tiktoks where things turn horrifying after they drink it. This is also largely from the perspective of someone viewing the memes on twitter, because twitter is my most used social platform.
As with anything that passes through popular culture, this eventually made its way into furry circles, because furries are people who live in society. There were plenty of fursonas keeling over in pain from drinking the Grimace Shake. There was some fetish art, too, of course. Overall it was just the effect of a meme propagating. Though eventually, this resulted in some backlash.
"Sure, keep furry weird until it's time to start doing free advertising for corporations."
That was sort of the general sentiment of the Furry Grimace Shake Counter-movement. It's not wrong, really - it is, in effect, free advertising. The Grimace Shake is a product being sold, currently. Making memes about the Grimace Shake - a product of McDonald's - increases their brand recognition.
Okay. Now what?
Furry, undeniably, is counterculture. It's one of the most diverse demographics out there. It's weird and hostile and toxic to most brands, sure, but furries are still people who live in society. For every furry who believes in the Furry Fandom being an independent ant-establishment movement there is another furry who is there for the aesthetics and the art. Critically, furry also exists under one big nation called capitalism. As much as it would be great if good art emerged fully formed out of the aether, furry artists are people who have bills to pay.
Furry brands exist, and though they might not have the weight of McDonald's swinging behind them, they are still brands. Hell, some furries even transform themselves into brands just to survive in the capitalist reality we all live in. As opposed as Furry is to capitalism, furry artists and creators and makers and artisans all have to participate in, learn the language of, and wear the skin of Capitalism to survive. There are the lucky ones who have the opportunity to live in relative safety from this great machine, but there are even more who don't.
I just see the sneering reaction towards other furries doing an absurdist McDonald's meme and get tired. I'm guilty of this too, of course - I've shown my disdain for people participating in or partaking of products that harm gay and trans people. But the Grimace Shake thing-- it's so far removed from the reality of any McDonald's branding except for the name. It is just the vehicle that people use for their own punchline, their own fetishes, their own subversion or adherence to the formula.
Oftentimes it is easy and incredibly seductive to look at anyone interacting with Capitalism and Brands and go "you are participating in the rot." And, strictly speaking, it's not wrong - it is, in effect, participating in capitalism. The Grimace Shake is a product being sold, currently. Making memes about the Grimace Shake - a product of McDonald's - increases their brand recognition.
Okay. Now what?
It's not like the Grimace Shake is the beachhead for a culture war against oppressed groups. It's not like people are buying the Grimace Shake to protest something. It's not like the Grimace Shake was created and owned by a transphobe who collects royalties on the success of their brand. It's a stupid meme where people die violently after drinking a branded shake.
(Even now I've had second thoughts about writing this out because god damn it's just so much nothing. There's nothing here to complain about. But hey, it's my blog, I might as well use it.)
I'm not dishonest enough to grab people by the shoulder and go "if you hate capitalism so much you should come up with a solution!" but there are definitely more worthwhile things to complain about. It would be easier to just say that you don't like the meme instead of trying to launder your feelings through progressive language. I do believe that these feelings of frustration are genuine - but at the same time it feels like the lowest hanging intellectual fruit. "You hate capitalism and yet you participate in it. Curious!"
I just look at those posts on a dying newsfeed and just feel tired.

GB News suspends Dan Wootton after Laurence Fox’s remarks on show
Broadcaster says it is conducting full investigation after also suspending Fox
GB News has suspended the presenters Dan Wootton and Laurence Fox as the channel struggles to contain the fallout after misogynistic comments made on Wootton’s show.
The rightwing news channel said on Wednesday: “GB News has suspended Dan Wootton following comments made on his programme by Laurence Fox last night. This follows our decision earlier today to formally suspend Mr Fox. We are conducting a full investigation.”
GB News has refused repeatedly to investigate Wootton over separate, unrelated, allegations that he used the pseudonym Martin Branning to send sexually explicit messages to former colleagues.
Wootton, 40, is already facing investigations by both MailOnline, which has suspended him, and his former employers at News UK over these historical claims. As a result he is now being investigated by three separate media groups over a variety of issues.
The latest scandal began on Tuesday evening when Fox appeared on the Dan Wootton Tonight programme on GB News to discuss comments made by the political journalist Ava Evans about men’s mental health.
Rather than focus on her arguments, Fox instead used his time to discuss the journalist’s appearance and explain why he would ignore her in a bar.
He called Evans a “little woman” and went on to say: “Show me a single self-respecting man that would like to climb into bed with that woman ever, ever, who wasn’t an incel.
“We need powerful, strong amazing women who make great points for themselves. We don’t need these sort of feminist 4.0. They’re pathetic and embarrassing. Who’d want to shag that?”
As both Fox and Wootton laughed, Fox added: “Sorry, it’s true though.”
Evans, who posted the clip of the segment on X – the social media site formerly known as Twitter – after it aired, said the comments had made her feel “physically sick”.
On Wednesday Evans said she had received an apology from GB News.
“It was an email from the editor – a very gracious email – basically telling me that what Fox said was not representative of the rest of the GB News outfit,” she told the BBC Newscast podcast.
“That’s actually probably the best apology I could have gotten. Honestly, not to cast doubt on our media landscape, but I didn’t actually think anything was going to happen.
“I don’t want to say I’m pleased by it. I just think that’s probably the best outcome I could have hoped for.”
Evans added that she had received threats in a “really nasty” past 24 hours.
During the discussion on Tuesday, Wootton could be seen smirking, although he did attempt to steer the conversation elsewhere before concluding: “And she’s a very beautiful woman, Laurence, very beautiful woman.”
Afterwards, following a social media backlash, Wootton issued an apology and insisted he was laughing only out of shock at Fox’s comments.
He said: “Having looked at the footage, I can see how inappropriate my reaction to his totally unacceptable remarks appears to be and want to be clear that I was in no way amused by the comments … I should have intervened immediately to challenge offensive and misogynistic remarks.”
'This is a network problem': GB News used her as a 'vehicle for content', says Ava Santina
Fox, also a presenter on GB News, was suspended by the channel on Wednesday morning after politicians and fellow GB News staff expressed their disgust at his comments.
Fox, 45, then turned his fire on Wootton, suggesting his apology and justification for the laughter were not sincere.
Fox shared a screengrab of a private Twitter conversation from just after the broadcast, captioned with the words “Honesty is the best policy”, that appeared to show Wootton posting a number of laughing emojis in response Fox’s comments about Evans.
It is rare for the rightwing GB News channel, which has encountered many controversies and multiple regulatory inquiries during its short existence, to issue an apology.
The media regulator, Ofcom, which has struggled to deal with GB News pushing the boundaries of British TV regulation, said it was urgently looking into a large number of complaints about Fox’s comments.
The media regulator has six separate investigations into GB News still going, with the channel already found to have breached the broadcasting code on three different occasions within the last year.
GB News has close links to the Conservative government, receiving preferential access to ministers and spending hundreds of thousands of pounds a year employing Tory MPs as presenters.
Wootton and Fox’s comments could also cause a headache for Paul Marshall, the hedge fund billionaire who provides much of the financial backing for GB News.
He is putting together a bid to buy the Daily Telegraph but could face challenges if he is not considered an appropriate buyer for the title due to the conduct of his other media businesses.
Lucy Frazer, the culture secretary, said Fox’s comments were “inappropriate and unacceptable”, while her Labour opposite number, Thangam Debbonaire, put the episode in the context of society-wide misogyny.
She said: “Last night’s woman-hating on air has hit a new low. Might want to ask why a national broadcaster would want to keep this man on air. Women are mighty and we will never let voices like this silence us.”

DNP Rewatch: What Dan and Phil Text Each Other 2021
Tumblr media
Date video was published: 12/21/2021 (X)
DNP Main Channel Rewatch: 452
The final video of 2021. Phil teased it and caused chaos, of course. I can’t believe (but am so glad) this is the sequel we ended up getting.
0:00 - tree background! they had the tree up and decorated by December 7, when Dan shared pictures
0:03 - great start. love that he immediately looks to Dan for his reaction
0:20 - calling himself out for “casted” and very unnecessary creepy eye editing there
0:25 - Phil’s face as Dan sits down 🥺 plus giving him the fireworks effect
0:33 - I like this Dan sweater! (and not really this Phil one, sorry)
0:39 - that was very quick from both of them there. then the jump cut before Dan can come up with another come-back and it’s basically a compliment 😂
0:57 - that was the least subtle thing ever and the bleeps did nothing.  Dan really wanted to be sure everyone got it though 😳
1:04 - Dan slowly scooting closer to Phil
1:06 - the annotations here...though Phil did not say anything about his “favourite thing”s before this
1:18 - Phil’s side-eye as he decides to tease Dan about that
1:28 - and even closer. what even. I would say he was trying to leave space to put the text screenshots, but they end up putting them in between them sometimes anyway
1:35 - I miss Dan’s reactions to Phil’s comments so much when we don’t get joint content for a while
1:41 - what is Phil even doing
Tumblr media
1:54 - I mean that’s adorable. I like that he also sent one called “beautiful hawk”
2:23 - Dan just saying that...alrighty then. this might be the most we’re-in-a-relationship joke they’ve ever made on camera? in 2017, Dan shared a couple of text screenshots (1, 2) and he did have a photo for Phil then
2:35 - Phil editing this and putting the “JC” over his own face 😂 or maybe they edited together like they used to do with the PINOFs
2:55 - oh that’s bad. Dan refused to share that photo on Twitter
3:10 - awww, Phil “I wouldn’t betray your trust”
3:13 -  I think most of these (with the exception of a few) are in order throughout the year, so guessing this was just Dan looking for birthday gifts for Phil in January
3:16 - so Dan wrote this and sent it to Phil, who then slightly edited it and posted it as a tweet. I wonder how often they do this, but good to know that sometimes Phil’s tweets may sound like Dan for a reason
3:25 - awww 🥺 and a tree they took to the new house
3:29 - Dan immediately laughing...don’t know if I want to know the context for that one
3:32 - Dan had tweeted about the Bernie meme just a couple days after Phil sent this to him
3:55 - they talked about seeing Steve in the wild during one of the Stereo shows
4:00 - I feel like a lot of the random texts at ~10am like “Bip” here are them checking to see if the other person is awake if they’re not getting up at the same time
4:15 - this makes it sound like Dan did a lot of the prep work for this video
4:24 - Phil just staring...and then licking his lips
Tumblr media
4:28 - this is one I’m not sure is in order or not...there was no “up” at the filming flat so this was either after they moved or they meant something else (or were somewhere else)
4:51 - that’s a picture they showed in the CAH video, though Phil is sending it to Dan here
5:04 - this was a new photo of the entryway and tree that we hadn’t seen before! this must have just been Dan sending those photos to Phil to use for a video though, because he had already made that tree by summer of 2020
5:14 - imagining Dan just scrolling through his pictures of Phil and sending him the worst ones 😂
Tumblr media
5:33 - Phil gets the weirdest ads I swear. Dan with the immediate “damn”
5:45 - Phil must have sent this to Dan to say he was going to make it his icon? why didn’t Dan say he didn’t like it then!
5:57 - controversial, but I agree with Dan here. 🤐 his face does look mask-like! I think it’s something with his eyes in that photo
6:18 - Phil knows immediately! they eat dinner SO late
6:34 - this is just the next day. and exactly a year before the cherry blossom selfies 👀
6:42 - they way that Dan said “are you gonna reveal it...” feel like something more than showing a painting
6:44 - I’m still not over this gift and that they have this memory of the Japan trip hanging in their new house. also bamboo forest day in Japan was the same day as that one Insta story of very soft Phil and I am not okay knowing that 😭
6:57 - Phil posted some these photos the same day he sent them to Dna here. and the one Dan sent back was one of those, so maybe Dan was picking out which he should post
7:13 - “we were trying to decide” everything they do is a collaboration, isn’t it? even if it’s supposedly “solo” merch or projects
7:24 - “I’m not just simping, Phil” christ. he does have to clarify
Tumblr media
7:50 - Dan’s immediate smile at Phil supporting him. Dan had released his new merch at the end of November too
8:03 - I love Phil texting for permission to eat the snacks (which were clearly for both of them) while Dan was out
8:15 - the sending of vibes thing just makes me want to weep 😭 Dan was recording some of his book that day, though he didn’t share this particular picture until the end of April
8:28 - zero context. though Dan was apparently feeling anxious that day
8:31 - another one where I feel like Phil is checking to see if Dan is awake
8:44 - there are a lot of those we don’t actually see and I’m not sure I want to know
8:52 - the house was getting closer! Dan had shared a Insta story with a picture this day too
9:07 - Phil just agreeing that they were “very flattering.”  Dan had shared those pictures of the entryway in July
9:12 - welp. alrighty then Phil. this must be the nerd cave room?
9:26 - and this must be Phil checking to see if Dan is coming to bed? right? this would have been later in the night after Phil was watching some Jujutsu Kaisen
9:53 - they start doing this and I’m pretty sure the ‘blessed family’ one is the only one they don’t rate 5/5 😂
10:01 - didn’t quite go with the whole “Philip”
10:08 - these annotations seem like Dan wrote them, which he very well might have
Tumblr media
10:16 - the glue incident. like I said in that post, this is earlier in May than I thought it had happened from the video
10:20 - Dan trying to calm him down via text since he couldn’t go with him 🥺
10:40 - this is also hilarious to me, that Phil was sending him interview ideas/jokes 😂 it looks like it might have been even longer than what they showed here
10:54 - getting the un-blurred version of this photo that Dan shared on May 21. also the heavy breathing/foot showing editing...not quite as good as the golden pig fight, but still a great editing joke from 2021
11:13 - what even. no guesses for this one
Tumblr media
11:23 - was this just Phil checking that the thumbnail was okay with Dan? I would say he had sent it to Dan so he had it for promo purposes, but Dan just retweeted/reposted Phil’s stuff
11:52 - awww, Phil is right. and Phil is proud of him!
12:09 - they were so excited about the house!
12:24 - and back to slightly earlier in the month. so many scans for Phil 🙁 Phil just sharing “I’m not dying” every time; Dan looks like he doesn’t know what to think about that
12:34 - I’m cackling at this one
12:42 - this is right around when they shared they were actually moving, so I’m guessing this has something to do with the garden at the new house
12:55 - this must have been when Phil was heading home from getting his COVID vaccine. also, Dan trying to act unamused
Tumblr media
13:12 - okay definitely out of order now. we were just in June, but you can see the tree in the background of that video so that must have been from much more recently. Phil did share it as a Short after this video was posted
13:54 - emo Dan and Phil saying it “send me vividly back to 2011″ is a lot
14:06 - yeah Dan barely promoted his involvement in that at all
14:18 - Phil sounds so disappointed about the furry bit being cut
14:22 - we don’t see Phil’s response in the screenshot there, so unsure if he’s actually reading it or just making something up because they didn’t want to share what he actually said
14:26 - needy Dan indeed! I love that he sound so whiny in his reading of it too
14:33 - I wanna know about “Blop blip blop...lmao” that they didn’t read
14:36 - yeah that’s just disturbing, slightly. Phil had shared a “haunted” photo of himself from the doorbell too, in late August
14:42 - little taps to Phil’s arm there
14:48 - okay this is my favorite one for some reason. something about how soft Dan sounds when he’s reading it and how completely incomprehensible it is
Tumblr media
15:01 - again maybe an are-you-awake check. Phil thinks 9:53am was too early though
15:09 - the ghost editing with the doorball footage 😂
15:27 - I mean, this was less surprising because Phil had already said “roleplaying as a catboy” in one of the Stereo shows
15:34 - Phil went through about 7 different emotions in a second there deciding whether or not this was a YouTube-appropriate story
15:50 - candid Dan photo! Phil looks so pleased/fond about it
16:04 - Phil giving zero shits about Dan’s sassiness there, lol
16:32 - this must have been on a train north the evening before filming in Rawtenstall since they were spotted filming there on July 22
16:54 - Dan is being diplomatic about YouTube here, but he really wanted it to be longer and include different bits
17:01 - more needy Dan!
17:09 - texting memories to each other I CAN’T 😭
17:17 - Dan is wrong - this was from when the went to see Mission Impossible in the US (1, 2). they had seen Infinity War in May 2018.
17:41 - does Dan just text Phil every time he needs a drink refill, haha
17:48 - how the hell would anyone interpret what that meant
17:56 - guessing Phil was with people for his plant calendar shoot. he was doing that ~September 23-24, at least from what he shared (1, 2)
Tumblr media
18:21 - has Phil literally been doing all of their laundry for years...what. the next one is from October, so this could be when Phil went to Isle of Man to visit his family? (if Dan didn’t go and was home alone?)
18:30 - I know “moonpig” is a card brand but also
18:35 - this still haunts me. I did not need to know that Dan calls Phil “moon butt.” there is no way to interpret how he reads that other than as a nickname. WHY did they include that
19:11 - Dan had posted that at the end of November. I wonder if that somewhat inspired this video
19:30 - Dan just sending him the double question mark after that 😂
20:05 - Phil looks so sad for him. this is like a follow-up to the first video of the year when they were so hopeful for things happening in 2021
20:30 - “at some point, somehow, in some way” is so vague; I am constantly on edge especially with how quiet they’ve been this spring
20:52 - Dan saying “tolerating” while Phil says “treating” 🥺
21:20 - love the sign off
Another contender for my favorite video of 2021. I know I’ve said that about 4-5 times but there are just so many good ones. It is so much more unhinged than the first texting video - either because they didn’t share the weirdest ones before or because they were outside/apart more for the texts in the first one, rather than mostly texting each other from inside the house. Also, I adore this “outtake” of a Kath text that Phil posted as a Short. They didn’t say much about what they were doing for Christmas (other than Phil going to see his family), but both Dan and Phil did share an Insta story.

hmm, i do wonder if part of the discrepancy in terms of fandom discourse re: dan vs jenny & vanessa comes down to just… the makeup of the gossip girl fandom itself. although dair fans make up a minority of the overall gossip girl fandom, dair is still the second biggest blair ship - with blair easily being the most popular character in the entire franchise. consequently, while there are still more chair fans who tend to talk shit about dan than dair fans who tend to like him, there are still a lot of dair fans overall, who offer a counter narrative to a lot of the anti-dan takes out there.
jenny and vanessa, on the other hand, don’t have large subfandoms for either their characters or their ships. (now, to be fair, jenny does have a definite following - jenny and jennate fans aren’t that rare - but the jenny/jennate fandom seems to be a lot smaller than the dan/dair fandom is.) vanessa, in particular, doesn’t seem to have much of a fandom - she does have some fans, but when i think in terms of people in the fandom whose favorite character/ship/primary interest is or involves vanessa, i can’t think of very many examples. a few, but just a few, particularly as compared to especially dan, but even jenny.
and when you look at fandom discourse, i think you basically see the effects of this play out. dan discourse tends to veer from one end of the pendulum to the other - “dan was the devil!” “dan was a saint!” “season 6 proves he was evil all along!” “season 6 was a mass hallucination!” “i watched dan humphrey murder my entire family!” “i died and dan humphrey personally put my ghost back inside my body!” and on it goes, ad infinitum. the dair and chair fandoms tend to be so polarized that a lot of individual chuck and dan character discourse somehow becomes chuck vs dan character discourse, which then inevitably spirals into chair vs dair ship discourse, making it really difficult to criticize the individual characters without it eventually becoming a ship war thing. it’s hard to just have a good faith discussion without annoying people in your own fandom who are tired of hearing it from the “other side”, so to speak.
on the flip side, a lot of negative stuff about vanessa just goes unchallenged. “vanessa is SO annoying 🙄” type posts proliferate on the wider gg tag and on twitter (ugh), and few people feel like arguing against it, because even if they disagree they probably aren’t invested enough in vanessa’s character to really make a Thing out of it. i have noticed that as newer, younger fans trickle in there has been a little more pushback than there used to be - i think more fans are noticing the ways in which gossip girl’s own narrative often unfairly gave vanessa the short end of the stick, and how fucked up it was that the show treated it’s only leading WOC so badly. but on the whole, “vanessa hate” tends to kind of go unchecked, and i would wager a lot of that stems from the fact that the fandom for her character and ships is very, very small.
(jenny i would actually put somewhere in between dan and vanessa in terms of the… tone and intensity of the discourse, so to speak? like, on the one hand, you see jenny getting slut-shamed and misblamed for breaking up chair and serenate a lot, but on the other hand the jenny and jennate fandoms - while on the smaller side - are still active and vocal enough that you see those arguments being countered with some frequency, even if you’re not looking for it. whereas i think with vanessa, if you’re not actively looking out for or curating pro-vanessa content, it’s just a constant barrage of negativity. :/)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was rewatching 2x03 and I feel like this is exactly what the fandom reaction is lmao
Definietely the dan discussion is affected by the chair v dair discourse and the reveal of GG. So its either dan was great and season 6 is not canon, or dan was an asshole and he finally showed his true colors in season 6 (im not saying that its exactly like this, but the majority of the conversations tends to be like this)
And yes i agree with everything else, i haven't seen a lot of vanessa commentary, most of is hate or people talking about the misgonigy/racism of the show as a whole but not strictly about her. Jenny does have a pretty stong fanbase so you can see both anti and pro jenny posts.

hi! not sure if you were around for this but here we go
i'm a kind of new dnp fan (last year) so i wasn't around for BIG/COTY, so i'm taking a poll of the people who were around for it (this is purely morbid curiosity btw). what was your reaction/the phandoms reaction on your end when the videos first dropped? thank you 💕
oh wow okay that is a QUESTION
(for some context i’ve watched dan since 2012, and then i started watching phil and “joined phannie social media etc” at the end of 2014 when they started the gaming channel) i took a break from all the social media side of this fandom in 2018 (but i always watched every dan and phil video) so when dan uploaded BiG i wasn’t expecting anything to drop? so i saw it and was like 👁👄👁
my reaction to BiG is hard to put into words, honestly i never thought dan would come out publicly, i never thought he would feel safe enough to (or WANT to tbh) so my initial feeling was like oh my god i’m so fucking proud ?? also i had thought for years that a possible reason for dan not wanting to talk about sexuality was that he was bullied at school, but i didn’t expect it to be THAT BAD so i was definitely in shock at the school and bullying section for a while, and felt very angry at what he has had to deal with for so long (especially as he basically hinted at that apart from phil, nobody knew he was gay most of his LIFE)
one thing i will say is that my reaction to the phil section has dramatically changed over the almost two years since i first watched BiG. at first i (and many MANY other dnp followers) definitely fell into the trap of being very overexcited about that statement and making a bigger deal out of it than we should (ofc dan was expecting this and you know its OKAY, but like, it kinda bugs me still that people talk about it very light heartedly) watching that now makes me so angry thinking about what they had to fucking go through, how gross people acted, but also how sad it is that so many of the people who said stuff that upset dan and phil in the 2011-2014 era were closeted teenagers so like its not as if i actually think they hold any blame ? idk its very confusing but yeah
but the FANDOM’S reaction to BiG ??? complete and utter chaos like everyone was just in a sort of collective wave of shock the day it dropped but also there was so so so much love like the youtube comment section on that video the first day was so so lovely and it was so surreal to see it trending number one on twitter like i think most people couldn’t quite process that it had happened ??
my reaction to COTY was literally 😳😳😳 phil’s complete confidence and self assurance in being a 32 year old homosexual man shocked me to my fucking core, he really came on main and said “i am a gay man and i have never liked a woman in my life, get over it, i love myself and you should love me too, bye!” and i LOVE IT honestly i aspire to feel like that in regards to my own queerness one day.
i think the fandom’s reaction was a mix of “i mean like we already know you’re gay because of dan” and “LET PHIL SPEAK FOR HIMSELF OMG I MUST PROTECT PHIL” (hint: both of these were 😐😐) but i do think we collectively made phil feel very loved and supported and he communicated that with us and that was very nice to be a part of.
overall it was a very positive, overwhelming and intense time to be a dedicated phannie, especially when dan posted his video, but also like it really did feel like a new era was coming which was so lovely. everyone was very very proud of dan and it felt like a great community to be in.
also maybe its a bit strange but i just felt such like contentment because OF COURSE the two men who had made me feel at home and happy and safe were massive fucking queers just like me. like obviously they’ve both talked about boys for years but theres just something about them being out, and me being like yeah these boys that i have loved and supported AND MET are just as queer as me and i cant begin to explain how amazing that felt

Giant Bomb is dead, and I care way less than I thought I would. Probably because 83% of the people who I ever cared about had already left or died, or were already relegated to reduced content roles.
Honestly, though, the writing’s been on the wall for a bit. They haven’t had anything worthy of paying for premium in several years, and, even though they’ve had well over a year to figure out a plan for the COVID era, they maybe made it a month with their plans to have a series of streams daily. I actually managed to forget I followed them on Twitch at all, for about 4 months, because they only streamed the podcasts and the occasional former Harmonix employee (who was literally paid to make content with their games while employed at Giant Bomb, which was funny because he blocked me on Twitter for making a post, addressing no one, back in 2014, which was asking about the legitimacy of the leaked list of “games “””””journalists”””””” who had taken money from publishers for positive reviews, a list which included him and multiple then-coworkers. I didn’t follow him, he didn’t follow me. He was manually searching the keywords, because he was, and is, a prick.) solo Rock Band stream in the last 8 months or so. Even when Jeff would manage to do one of his 20 streams from home a year, it would be on his own channel. There was just no content. And they’re surprised their “pay for our unique premium content!” model failed. They always “feigned” anger at Dan for “making” them do the Mario Party Parties, and literally never promoted his and Drew’s Metal Gear series after the first game... but I bet that, when only those, UPF, and the ad-free versions of the podcasts were premium features, those two series were keeping them afloat. Well, that and the remaining goodwill they miraculously managed to hold onto for a few years after Ryan died.  Shit, I follow several people who are GB staff-adjacent, and... I can’t think of the last time they mentioned anything that happened on-site. Even the people who’ve been directly supporting them for over 10 years were out.
But yeah, the site is super dead. They pretended in the announcements like they’re going to make a go of it still, but... you’ve got like 4 content people left, and the only one people give a shit about is Jeff. You just saw 3/4 of the side of the site that was still trying these past several months jump ship in a 3 month span. One of those was, by nearly any definition, a founding member. Of which you had already lost one, and are losing another from the main side. Jeff’s been way less active until the last week or two, probably because he heard they were leaving and was like “oops, should probably check on the ship that’s been sinking for years!” Then you have Jason “The Human Mumble” Oestricher, the charisma vacuum, whose legitimate public-facing reaction to first hearing that all but one of his GB predecessors were going to be gone. was, and I quote, “Hoo Boy.” Ben and Jan are the definition of “fine”. They would have been great, as they are today, as secondary members 8-10 years ago. But carry the site, they cannot. They’re down to, what, 5 named members now? It hasn’t been that dire since the beginning of 2009, before they hired Drew, when they hadn’t even started the P4 endurance run. You know, that surprise massive, internet-changing thing that essentially popularized the Let’s Play concept, loosening its definition and making it something that could be as personality-driven as game-driven, made simply to give them something to put on the website, beyond the rare review and, slightly later, quick look. This kinda illustrates the problem with modern Giant Bomb. When they were figuring shit out, flying by the seats of their pants, they came up with great shit, and they gave enough of a shit to make it happen. 0.000% chance they do a 10 hour Thanksgiving Kinect stream if the Kinect was new today. 0.000% chance the core members would have done an endurance run in the last 10 years if CT and Shenmue (which I haven’t watched) weren’t driven by the younger members. And you could see it in the fact that they never made a real, true mobile app. The number one thing that would have made them indispensable this past decade, an app to integrate premium features, the podcast, their video player, etc. all in one place in a mobile-friendly package, that could sync with the website... and they never even raised the idea publicly. I wonder how much of the innovation was the group think-tank of the first 5 years. Beyond Dan’s couple major contributions, I don’t think they added a single new type of content after 2012, which... still means the last 6.5 years lacked any semblance of innovation. I guess that’s a big part of why I fell off tremendously quickly after late 2014. There was just nothing new, and believe me, I was looking. I wanted reasons to stay watching. I supported them with my dollar. I believed in those brave early days. And I went back yesterday to watch the DP endurance run from VJ again. I still miss that rapport. And really, that hurt, too. Vinny moving back east, less than a year after Ryan passed... short term, it was fine. You had more people than ever to cover the gaps. But the spark was gone. The chemistry made the site. When I think of Giant Bomb, I still think of Jeff, Vinny, and Ryan, first and foremost. Those early podcasts, the NintenDownloads, the crazy tangents that everyone could seamlessly follow up on(well, except Brad, because he essentially slept through most of the podcasts, unless he was talking about the thing he did that week), the weird high-concept GOTY stuff... it wasn’t perfect, but you were entertained. You laughed. You were engaged. It never felt like you were watching them working, even though you could see the work they put in. It felt like, when they released something, you were experiencing a group of legitimate friends doing what they wanted to do anyways.(And boy have I seen enough groups do everything they can to NOT be enjoying doing that, and break up as a result due to hating the jobs that they chose to do).
Part of me would love to make it as simple as “Ryan died, and so did the original spirit”, and... to a degree, it’s true. If you go back to any retrospective they’ve done about the founding of the site, or the podcast they recorded after Ryan passed, you can’t help but recognize that Giant Bomb never happens if these core members don’t all quit their jobs, led by Ryan,  because they respect their boss/manager, Jeff, and know he’s doing the right things(for them, for the reader/viewer, etc.) ahead of what GameSpot management wants him to do. Jeff could have been left in the wilderness, trying find a spot elsewhere, with the rumor going around between executives that Jeff wasn’t going to help them promote anything, essentially killing their revenue. He would have been done in terms of getting employed by a major site. But Ryan first, and soon after, Vinny and Brad, gave up their jobs to make this fledgling little project go. As much as the ERs brought me in and gave the impression that Jeff and Vinny were the long-standing duo, no, it was Ryan who was Jeff’s partner in crime. And, 8 years later, I can comfortably say... Giant Bomb never recovered from losing him.
But it was so much more. Everything that set them apart slowly went away,  in time. I don’t think they’ve posted reviews for games in consecutive MONTHS since 2017; 2018 at the latest. They have done one Endurance Run in 9 years. They have not had a meaningful live event in 6 years. Unprofessional Fridays were more formulaic and lesser in volume and frequency after the major players started moving east. The lack of coordination between coasts killed the camaraderie, to the point that I think one of the last 5 true gameplay crossovers was their series of 2016-2017 PUBG shitfests. I remember when Vinny starting GBEast was supposed to be the start of a new era of content, and... it was, but not in a positive way, like it sounded. When half of each side seemed to constantly have no interest in making anything, nothing got made. But I guess that’s what happens when your second in command in one of your headquarters is just a former marketing grunt with an attitude problem, and the guy with the biggest ego on the team is the one who refuses to move to join either side, and just pushes out the most self-important drivel as a header to what were literally just copy-pasted articles from other sites every week while sitting at his desk, dreaming of the days Gawker would pay him to plagiarize political drivel instead, because that’s what really gets the soulless clicks. One of your founding members becomes depressed due to losing his two closest work friends, one for real, one to a 3000 mile separation, within a year, while the other one who is left virtually stopped playing anything but DOTA 2 for 2 years. Suddenly your most prominent personalities are the 2 new guys(one the aforementioned charisma vacuum, the other a walking mark) and your previously-mostly-off-camera producer who is best known to the wider Internet for... blinking. So, yeah, lifeless. And NOW, all you’ve got is old melancholy dad, charisma vacuum dad, and the two ADHD kids whose defining trait is that they choose to exclusively refer to their partners as “my partner” in voices that make it sound like they are embarrassed to have partners, while also talking more about what their partners are doing than what they do.  It’s confounding.
But yeah, TL:DR: RIP zombie Giant Bomb. Glad you’re finally getting taken behind the shed. It took 3 years too long, minimum.

So my feeling is that part of the strong reaction to Dan’s tweets sometimes is that people just have unrealistic expectations, honestly. Not every tweet is going to be a banger or groundbreaking or completely thought-out in terms of potential problematic connotations. I don’t know what Twitter folks people are following, but I can’t think of one person who I follow who I find consistently funny or relatable or saying things that I agree with. My experience of others on Twitter is often just sort of watching them go through the various moods of life, and if most of the time they feel like a human being who is multi-faceted and who is engaging in some way, then I’ll keep following. I don’t love all of Phil’s tweets, either. All I’m saying is I’m personally much happier as a fan if I just don’t expect greatness from every single tweet.
I don't check twitter. I don't enjoy Twitter. The thing about dan, though, is that he doesn't exist for us unless we talk about the little things we get. In my experience, the way the phandom works is we talk about whatever D&P do to squeeze as much from it as we can.
For me, personally, my post about how my tumblr has been past that for a While is all I really had to say about the tweet. But I got some interesting anons about it and tbh I don't get a lot of anons so I'm definitely not gonna discourage any thoughtful discussion on my blog. That's what I'm here for and most of the time no one wants to have any kind of thoughtful discussion so I'm gonna take it where I can even if this tweet isn't where I'm the most invested in discussing things.

FEATURE SERIES: My Favorite One Piece Arc with Daniel Barnes
Tumblr media
I love One Piece and I love talking to people who love One Piece. And with the series going on 23 years now, there is a whole lot to talk about. As the series is about to publish its 1000th chapter, a true feat in and of itself, we thought we should reflect upon the high-seas adventure and sit down with some notable names in the One Piece fan community and chat about the arcs they found to be especially important, or just ones they really, really liked.
Welcome to the next article in the series "My Favorite One Piece Arc!"
My next guest in this series is Daniel Barnes, writer for the Aggretsuko comic, and his original graphic novel The Black Mage. For my chat with him, he chose the Marineford arc, in which Luffy drops into a World Government headquarters in a desperate race against time to save his "brother" Ace from execution.
A note on spoilers: If you haven't seen the Marineford arc yet, this interview does contain major plot points. Watch the Marineford arc starting RIGHT HERE if you'd like to catch up or rewatch!
Tumblr media
Dan Dockery: Let’s say that for some reason, I get to the end of Impel Down, just before Luffy & Co. drop into Marineford, and I’m like “I’m done. This is it. I can’t handle any more One Piece.” In one sentence, what do you tell me to keep me going?
Daniel Barnes: Why are you stopping before you reach the payoff of everything you’ve read so far?
I like that! How long have you been into One Piece?
When I first started consuming One Piece in earnest, ironically enough, I was in the Navy at the time. It was 2014, and up until that point, my only exposure had been the 4Kids dub on FoxBox.
Tumblr media
Nice. I love a good FoxBox reference. Was it recommended to you? Because I know that, when a lot of people start One Piece, it’s like “FINE. I’ll watch One Piece. You’ve convinced me.”
I don’t consume anime as voraciously as I did back then. Back then, I was an anime vacuum, but I was also in this weird spot where I was semi-depressed. But someone told me, “You gotta try One Piece, it’s the best.” And my first reaction was “Umm, the art style’s kinda weird, though.” But they told me “You’ll get over it,” and the thing that made me finally take that leap was Gurren Lagann, which also had an unusual art style and then became one of my favorite things ever. So I figured I should at least give it a shot.
That’s something I’ve heard a few times. Because in other big series like Naruto and Bleach, the character designs are much more proportionate and straightforward. And I felt the same way...until I watched it, and realized the art style is PERFECT for what it is. So, Marineford is pretty much the halfway point of the series, with characters returning from all over the place. Were there any that you were excited to see come back?
There’s a few of them. I always love it when Mihawk shows up, but I think the big one is Whitebeard. Because up until this point, he’s just sitting around and you know he’s a big deal but you’re always wondering why he’s a big deal. And then you find out in Marineford. I enjoy seeing characters that are kind of defined as the “power ceiling” in an anime universe get to do stuff, and it was cool to see him make the entire world quake.
Tumblr media
I think I called it in an article a “Be Quiet, The Parents Are Talking” character. You’ll go through Luffy getting new power-ups and increasingly strong villains and these seemingly insurmountable admirals with their elemental powers and then Whitebeard comes in, and he’s leaps and bounds above everyone. And like you said, for the most part, he’s just sitting down beforehand.
Yeah, he’s sitting down drinking a giant gourd of sake. His name is Whitebeard, but he doesn’t have a beard. Got a real Hulk Hogan vibe to him. Who is this guy? But then you finally see him after all this time, and that’s the magic of One Piece. You see all of these things over the years and you wonder what part they’ll play and then it finally hits you and their role and strength becomes clear.
Marineford, obviously, is all built around Ace. And what you get out of the arc probably depends on how much you enjoy Ace’s character. How did you feel about him? Did it make you emotional at all? I know he has the one scene with Garp where they talk about finding your purpose in life, and that really got to me, even though I’m not the biggest fan of Ace.
Okay, I think Ace looks cool and I think he has good powers, but I didn’t really care that much when he died. I didn’t really know him enough.
Tumblr media
Were there any characters that you did get attached to or like a lot in Marineford? I know you said you liked Whitebeard and Mihawk, but who was your Marineford MVP? Who shines brightest among all those crazy diamonds?
Okay, so the cop-out answer is probably Luffy. He’s one of the weakest characters there and he manages to survive and he plays such a big role by rallying everyone despite being constantly outmatched. So, objectively, Luffy. But maybe I give it to Coby, because Coby stands his ground against Akainu. He gives you hope that maybe the Marines can change their ways one day and when he refuses to move in front of an Admiral, I thought that was a real stand-out, awesome moment.
So Ace dies, Whitebeard just wrecks Akainu and throws him into a pit, and then, out of nowhere, Blackbeard shows up. Whitebeard beats up Blackbeard and Blackbeard’s forces kill Whitebeard. What do you think about Blackbeard as a villain? Because he’s so unlikeable. He’s underhanded, he whines whenever he gets hurt, he’s super pompous. He has cool powers, but there’s nothing cool about who he is.
He’s super interesting, to me. He has a mystery around him with his two Devil Fruit powers, and he doesn’t really fit into any shonen villain stereotype. He’s an inverse of Luffy, but not in all of the super obvious ways. When you first see him in Jaya, you see him start with basically nothing, and you watch him work through the system and the powers that be, just like Luffy. They’re both trying to achieve the same thing and reach the same goal. But Blackbeard’s methods are different.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Luffy will punch you in the face, while Blackbeard will stab you in the back.
And getting to see that evolution is great, because they easily could’ve just said, boom, here’s the next big bad guy and given him to you without context. But it’s like I said about One Piece earlier, where it shows you stuff over time and gets you to look forward to what will happen with it later. That’s Blackbeard’s whole appeal.
You talked earlier about Coby standing up to Akainu, ready to die for his beliefs. And then Shanks comes and stops the war. How did you feel about that? Because we’re all still waiting to see what his deal is (which as you said is a big part of the continuing appeal of One Piece,) but were you hyped to see him show up?
I thought it was cool, because One Piece has done a good job of establishing him as an awesome guy. He’s a lot like Zero from Mega Man X, where he shows up at the beginning, they imply how powerful he is, they make the main character want to be as strong as him, and then they take him away and only show him sparingly. So whenever Shanks drops by, he's been handled so well that you’re just on the edge of your seat wondering what he’s gonna do.
Tumblr media
So, after the war is over, Jimbei has to remind Luffy that he still has things worth fighting for. And then, the timeskip. Were you aware that a timeskip was coming?
Oh yeah. It’s kind of hard to exist on social media and not get a bunch of these little hints about what’s gonna happen. But that was my goal with One Piece for a little while: I’m gonna get to the timeskip. I have to get there. It’s coming, I know it’s coming, I don’t know when it’s coming, but I just have to reach it.
There are so many big moments in this arc, but looking back at it, are there any moments that stand out as prime One Piece to you?
The obvious one, for me, is when Luffy goes Third Gear and punches the giant out of the way. That’s so cool and such quintessential One Piece. A giant on an arena made of ice and a rubbery kid inflates his fist to make it huge and knocks him around. It’s so weird and it works.
  ONE PIECE LIGHTNING ROUND!
  Favorite One Piece character?
  Usopp.
  Favorite One Piece villain?
  Crocodile.
  Favorite One Piece arc?
  Sabaody Archipelago.
Which Devil Fruit would you eat if you had the choice?
  Bellamy’s Spring Spring fruit.
If you had to live on any island in the One Piece universe, which would you choose?
Does the Gran Tesoro from the Film: Gold movie count? That one’s pretty dope.
  Favorite One Piece fight?
Luffy vs Blueno, when he first reveals the Second Gear.
One Piece moment that made you cry the hardest?
When the Franky Gang beats up Usopp and Nami finds him and Usopp is like “I’m useless. I can’t do anything.” Whenever Usopp gets beaten up, his nose gets all crooked and he loses teeth. There’s so many cartoon-ey visual indicators for Usopp in pain. It got me.
One Piece moment that made you cheer the loudest?
When Luffy punches the Celestial Dragon in the face. It’s so cathartic.

The world is about to change with Biden and Harris in office. It is great to have Harris in there. More women in power is so important. Women don’t think with their dicks. I mean, a pussy likes to fuck just as much but we can also get some work done. Men are rarely as good at multitasking.  The inauguration went off with high security after the Trump insurrection. 5 were killed as the traitors stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 but Biden still became the President on the 20th. Nobody really asked my opinion, but as someone who’s been here a long ass time - if phandom things are stressing you out or affecting your mental health, you should do something about it.
When TABINOF/TATINOF were announced, the whole phandom was a shitshow of polarizing opinions about Dan and Phil being sellouts. There was a lot of critical discussion about the validity of YouTubers selling books and going on tour prior to this, and many people were shocked and didn’t know what to make of this announcement. It wasn’t until a few days later when Dan and Phil posted a video explaining the thought process behind them did everyone calm down, and eventually get excited about the new stuff. Ultimately, the first book and tour are widely considered some of their best work.
But in the interim, I was a complete mess. I was on tumblr and twitter near-constantly, reading people’s opinions and getting mad when I didn’t agree, ranting to anyone who would listen about the situation, and generally having no idea what to think. It really spiked my anxiety to the point where a friend suggested I take a step back from the phandom.
At first, I was appalled by that suggestion. The phandom is my home - why would I want to separate myself from it? But it became clear to me that something had to change, and that something was my mindset.
So I unfollowed and blocked and blacklisted to my heart’s content. I put my phone down and paid attention to other hobbies. I surrounded myself with people who supported and respected my opinions and content. I tried not to pay attention to the “drama”, and formed my own opinions before valuing those of others. Basically, I carved out my little corner of the phandom and rarely poked my head out.
The reason I’m recounting all of this is that I’m seeing a lot of discussion around getting some separation from the phandom, as Dan’s absence, DAPG’s hiatus, and the general lack of content seems to be affecting people negatively. And I want you to know that you’re not crazy if it is. If being a part of the phandom is your primary interest/hobby, then of course you’re going to have a reaction to all of this.
My point in making this post is basically to say that things are a little off the walls right now, so it’s a great time to take a step back and reevaluate what you want your phandom experience to be. It’s entirely what you make of it. I’m of the firm belief that there are no inherently good or bad fandoms, only good people and good content. Surround yourself with those, and you’ll be just fine. <3

The Beechwood Bumps
So it's been a while!  After I covered most of the main problems that bug me that were created over the last 100 years, the city/state didn't really do anything especially crazy.  Until... The Beechwood Bumps™.
Even though our city has a million fundamental problems with its infrastructure that cause constant gridlock it seems to have turned it's sights in recent years to speeding. I suspect the approach is something like:
1. Get a 311 call from one or more citizens
2. Do a traffic study of said area
3. Implement some solution
This is probably happening all over, but there were two notable projects near where I live in Squirrel Hill.
First - on Dallas Ave, the city added basically "wiggle poles" in the middle of the street designed to slow down traffic.
Tumblr media
There are of course two things that make these weird
1. It's on the uphill, where people already go slower
2. It diverts traffic right into the area where a cyclist would be, huffing and puffing up the hill.
Finally, they make it quite difficult to turn out of the cross streets with large vehicles, and are easily avoided by people who don't care about lines/laws anyway.  Given the random placement of these I’d bet $100 they got a 311 complaint from someone living on Dallas by Northumberland and Woodwell.
But this post isn't about that - that was just foreshadowing for arguably the most controversial traffic calming project the city has ever implemented, The Beechwood Bumps™.  For this I went beyond my normal lazing ranting, and did some "deep investigation" to understand how this happened.
What am I talking about?  Well, if you haven't been on Beechwood Blvd by the Frick Environmental Center, one day the city added a series of four very large speed humps.  The humps slow traffic from the speed limit of 25 to 15, and have cuts in them for cyclists.
Tumblr media
These humps are unusual for a couple of reasons - first, even though I've driven over 400,000 miles in my life all over the world, I've never seen speed humps in a through road.  They are always on private roads, side roads, cul de sacs etc... This is partly because speed humps on through streets slow emergency vehicles trying to get to where they need to be.  Even more odd, these particular speed humps slow you to BELOW the speed limit.  Third, the cuts in the speed humps allow people to partially avoid them (at the expense of cyclists), and Fourth - before the speed humps I never really considered this a dangerous speeding area, in fact I usually take this road over Shady Ave because it is a slow rolling, relaxing drive with no road rage.
That brings us to the history of Beechwood Blvd.  Beechwood Blvd is a curving scenic road between Schenley Park and Frick Park that was built right at the dawn of the automobile specifically for the purpose of giving these new car owners a place to go for scenic drives - the curves, etc.. are part of the design - it wasn't made for thru traffic as much as just a fun road to drive on.  Of course as the Squirrel Hill area built up, it's now almost entirely lined by residential housing, and the original road has been somewhat chunked up.  Nevertheless Beechwood is still a delightful place for a convertible, motorcycle or bike ride.
Then the speed humps came - and road rage followed.  People who use Beechwood to commute seem to have a visceral negative reaction to the speed humps, using the bike cuts to avoid it.  Where before I never experienced any road rage - now I get people furiously going around the speed hump and riding my bumper.  Or you get people that practically stop at the speed humps.  Then there is the grey area - police were pulling people over for going into the bike lane to avoid the speed hump, but what rules affect motorcycles, can I use the bike cut or do I need to pop a wheelie over the hump?  The rage isn't just on the road - people took their arguments to NextDoor and Twitter and evidently there is a new public hearing on this due to the outrage (which i cannot find despite my searching, more on this later...).  It's certainly made it a less relaxing road to drive on for a number of reasons.
My main beef is the arbitrary nature of the speed humps - why the single stretch of Beechwood by the low populated Shaw Ave and Darlington Rd?  Especially when the Frick Environmental Center and an Elementary School are right near there, but no speed humps installed by those sites.  So I really wanted to dig into this - was it some councilperson or big donor’s front yard?  Why speed humps?  Why here and not the many other side streets that could use them.
Well - I did a "Right to Know" request (similar to FOIA) around the project after Dan Gilman was responding to wrath of citizens on Twitter.  He mentioned there was a traffic study so I figured sure, let's see this.
From what I could gather in my digging this project happened like this:
1. Between 1-6 citizens complained about speeding by the Frick Environmental Center (the city won't release details on citizen complaints but anecdotally i figured out someone I knew was one of these complaints - so there are indeed real citizens behind this).
2. A traffic study specifically centered on the Frick Environmental Center was commissioned
3. Funding for some of the solutions proposed in the study was secured
4. A public meeting was held around the topic
5. Something roughly 35% of the suggested plan happened
So what does the traffic study say?  It seems like they put speed monitors on the north and south end of the Frick Environmental Center, and found an average speed of 33.2 and 33 in a 25 mph zone.
Tumblr media
33 in a 25.
Otherwise known as basically the speed all traffic goes in most 25 mph zones everywhere (although shoutout the to record setters they found that got to 61 mph).
Okay... so the speeding doesn't seem that bad.  I would guess the average speed in the 25 mph Homestead Grays / High Level bridge is 48mph, so why speed humps here?
Well - they sent a physical crew out as well, and "observed" that people were hesitant to cross the street at the Environmental Center, and that is basically impossible for people coming from Dallas to get there (oh boy do I know this).  So they suggested putting in crosswalks and fixing the Dallas area so it has sidewalks (currently it has a gap).  It's also worth nothing the only stretch that was slower was to an avg of 29 mph between Darlington and Shaw.  This make sense because the 90 degree turn in the road naturally slows people down.
Tumblr media
They also said "look the road is wide, which encourages people to speed", and there were 18 crashes over a 5 year period which resulted in a total of one pedestrian injury, and no major injuries of any crash.
So let's lay out the facts:
1. One to six people complained about the area
2. The study found people go basically the speed they go on all other roads in the city
3. No pedestrian has ever been hurt seriously in the area, and there is average of 3 accidents per year (in a section larger than the study area)
4. A public meeting was announced where only a handful of people attended (I believe the way it was marketed contributed to very low awareness)
5. A plan was implemented which only partially addressed the recommendations
One particular piece of number five was that the original study was around getting access to the environmental center - and the suggested calming was for the north and south sides of the center.  However the north side was never installed, and instead humps were put near Darlington down the street (where the speeds were slower already) - why?  I reached out to a city engineer involved in the project and it turns out a speed hump on the north side of the FEC would affect the Great Race, so since they had the funds they put it at Darlington because they also felt it was hard for people coming off Darlington to get onto Beechwood - but take a look how many people that affects, around 12.
Tumblr media
So I'm still not clear why the city decided to put speed humps here - it seems like they took the concerns of a few people over the 6,000 cars who drive this stretch every day.
What's the problem you might say - people should slow down!  Okay - well why not put speed humps on every single stretch of every road in Pittsburgh?  Clearly that would be ridiculous.  Why this part?  Maybe the city has a list of all of the major speed danger areas in the cities and is rolling out a ton of these, but I live right near this area and it wouldn't even have made my top 10.
I personally believe these speed humps should be removed - through roads should not have speed humps.  These are not major crossing areas for pedestrians - there seemed to be no study of the potential number of pedestrians that would be impacted.  Even with the speed humps, I've still never seen someone crossing here.
It would be great if the city had a public record of total complaints of various areas to create transparency here.  I have a hard time believing this is the number one problem area - people FLY down Ayelsboro, which is not meant as a through street, thanks to Google Maps.  People FLY down many of our other roads including Wilkins, etc...  The solution can't be to put speed humps everywhere.
UPDATE - wow right before I posted this the city doubled down on this madness and added more poles leading up to the humps, that require you to slow down and slalom, creating a totally ugly mess of this once beautiful, scenic road.  I think they might have done this because the speed hump crossing isn’t at the actual pedestrian crossing for some reason?  (Measure twice, build a speed thing once?) The city has to be trolling us now, right?

DNP Rewatch: The Top Dan Memes of 2016
Tumblr media
Date video was published: 01/14/2017 (X)
DNP Main Channel Rewatch: 332
Dan’s first video of 2017 and the second of his “top memes” videos. It follows the same format as his first one from the year before. He asked for suggestions on Twitter and then promoed it on Instagram once it was posted too.
0:08 - yes, accurate description, yikes
0:36 - “2016 can fuck off” sounds about right
Tumblr media
0:44 - wow the 2015 memes video really did get a lot of views
1:08 - he says “obtained” which makes me wonder if he didn’t pay for it but got sent it or something. I actually don’t hate it that much
1:21 - he did wear it in his first not-memes video of 2016...okay it does look a bit like a potato sack
1:44 - he did spend a ton of time traveling and filming for that. (I have never actually watched the full documentary.)
2:04 - poor Dan; he tried to tell them...and he was right
Tumblr media
2:47 - okay these made me laugh 😂
3:07 - and there it is. honestly their joke craft videos are some of my favorite content
3:19 - part of these not dying is their own fault...still
3:25 - DNP also constantly use “protip” in videos after that
3:42 - that wasn’t exactly untrue that some other YouTube/internet people thought DNP’s fanbase was annoying...I think we’re better now
3:51 - just glossing over the whole TATINOF thing
4:08 - the ironic smile as he does another one, lol
Tumblr media
4:30 - yeah I’m gonna go with disturbing
4:50 - I do feel this. I also have no idea how to pose in photos and I would hate to have to take that many all the time. He had posted some other peace-sign vs. sad outtakes on Instagram as well
5:32 - the picture he chose for “whitest” ...yep
5:41 - okay this is hilarious 😂 poor DNP
Tumblr media
5:57 - of course they were too awkward to ask, haha
6:16 - “let’s just not talk about Phil” ...Dan looks so dead behind the eyes in this clip and Phil looks so proud of himself 😂
6:32 - the annotations here kill me...he’s right though those do not look like weed leaves at all
7:09 - there are a couple pictures of the bowl method in DAPGO.
7:24 - this art is great actually
7:58 - this is hysterical...his dramatic reading and facial expressions are great. and here’s that Instagram selfie...where a ton of comments are just “disappointed, janice” ahahaha
Tumblr media
8:32 - “well shit Janice, I have been told” is a line that runs through my head at random points
8:47 - getting hairspray in your eye accidentally is the worst
9:39 - clip from the TATINOF documentary...Phil is trying so hard
10:17 - “remixes...kind of” 😂
10:38 - this was at the DAPGOOSE thing in London that Dan had uploaded to his channel
11:10 - “sometimes I don’t upload videos for a few week” ...understatement of ever?
11:15 - ah, Dan’s diss track
11:32 - “way too real” yep, I have vague memories of the reaction to that video dropping and it was a lot
11:58 - ahahaha, wow. he had tweeted some about that when it happened too
Tumblr media
12:18 - the amount of times he is saying “joke” and you can hear the quotes in his voice...and the clip from Louise’s video where she looks shocked and Phil is just nodding 👀
12:48 - how do you even get into those “various situations”...I feel like this one is on him
13:09 - this compilation is too much
13:23 - it’s so hard to tell with Dan sometimes but it would make sense for him to choose that to joke about if that’s true
13:30 - “exposing Phil” alrighty then
13:48 - he is so happy about this...and that photo set is absolutely fantastic
14:06 - aww the cute koala pictures again...and then not so cute, hahaha
Tumblr media
14:39 - this was from ISG 8...he had to know what was going to happen; he can’t just throw a hashtag out there
15:06 - he talked about the horror of teen magazines in the last memes video too
15:18 - these are horrific 😨
15:35 - wtf
Tumblr media
16:00 - I can’t deal with BONCAs talk
16:16 - I low-key love the sparkly suit jacket 🤐
16:40 - this is not quite as bad as the missing eyebrow one I don’t think. the memes for this one made me giggle
17:06 - I love that this is his favorite
17:30 - time for very dramatic Dan
18:16 - this story is great
18:28 - that must have been such a surreal experience for Dan
18:43 - “me and Phil”
Tumblr media
18:56 - that tweet especially with the icon he had at the time 😂
19:07 - that is so horrifyingly creative and really does sound like something Dan might tweet. I love Phil so much
19:31 - the dramatic conclusion
19:57 - that goes way to well with the previous tweet...definitely more disturbing
20:22 - ah, shittywatercolour!
20:57 - the starter pack ones are pretty good
21:14 - cannot deal with hello internet
Tumblr media
22:09 - “you will never be able to escape your mistakes” too true
22:30 - he was excited about the new year, and then...
22:56 - Dan’s 2017 live shows are all still public on his side channel
The meme videos aren’t my top favorites, and I still think I like the 2015 one better, but this one is funny too! I think I care less about the meme bits and more about just hearing Dan talking about different moments from the year. Dan felt the need to clarify in the comments that he’s not actually upset in the comments because some people were worried about him, whoops.

Interview with the Horans!
Tumblr media
This is a compilation of questions I’ve received for Niall and Delilah to answer and I did it as if they were sitting down doing an interview, I hope you enjoy and that it helps give you an insight into the lives of the Horans! If you have no clue what I’m talking about Niall and Delilah are from my Insta Story you can find here!
Q: How did you two meet?
Niall: At an after party of a sports event I believe? She’s gonna kill me if I got it wrong.
Delilah: Really? An after party? You’re so annoying. We met at a sports event that I didn’t want to go too but my friend Phoebe dragged me to it and I ran into Niall at the bar it was all super casual.
Niall: Ya sure, if ya call her almost knockin me over ta order a bloody drink casual.
Q: How did you ask Delilah to be your girlfriend?
Niall: Oh god uh I jus sat her down and asked her if she wanted to be exclusive an she laughed at me cos she was like “who the hell uses the term exclusive? you’re such an old man” dat was probably after we had been on like four or so dates. I jus enjoyed bein round her.
Delilah: It was super cute, he gets all blushy and adorable. He was nervous and I have no clue as to why, he had already asked to share my calendar with him to see what dates work for us and everything. Like that’s a pretty big deal.
Q: What’s a normal day in the life like for the Horans?
Niall: nine times outta ten shes up before me, she was like dat even before the girls. She can stay awake till six in da bloody mornin and be up at eight ready to rock n roll. S’a bit disturbin, but our days when M’not on tour are very like every other married couples... jus wit a set of twins.
Delilah: We go on a walk in the mornings, we’ve been doing that ever since I was pregnant, and while on the walk is when we lay out the game plan for the day. So if he has any meetings or anything he’ll tell me so I can plan my day around it. So like yesterday he had a photo shoot for something-
Niall: Cos m’a model now. Just so ya know.
Delilah: Right...so anyway he had his model thing so the girls and I brought him lunch and he was home at a decent time to help with their bedtime routine.
Niall: I feel like we are pretty normal ta be honest like we don’t do a lot of extravagant shit.
Delilah: Not anymore no.
Niall: We were never like jet settin on tons of trips and stuff we’ve always kinda just went from New York to California. We like ta lay low.
Delilah: As low as a former member of one of the largest boy bands in the world can lay....he forgets who he is sometimes. But yes we do kinda just stick to the two places and don’t go out much unless it’s to dinner because I like to eat out a lot. It’s a problem that I’m working on. Oh and Niall likes to go to parties without me but that’s not typically part of a normal day in the life of us.
Niall: M’not even gonna go der wit you.
Q: Speaking of parties, Delilah it’s pretty obvious you don’t like being left at home while Niall goes and has fun.
Delilah: Yeah he’s an asshole. He met Post Malone while I was at home trying to get comfy with my damn pregnancy pillow! And him and Shawn just are super annoying when they get drunk together. But I don’t mind him having his bro time and going out without me, I just like being dramatic.
Niall: Yeah m’da worst at like tryin ta plan parties and invitin her cos half the time they are so last minute and I know she does not do last minute.
Delilah: No I need at least four hours to prepare myself to be around people and to like get dressed and all that not so fun stuff.
Q: Who said I love you first?
Niall: She did. During an argument matter of fact, it was pretty memorable.
Delilah: I said it during a moment of passion Niall James not a full blown argument. it was like a “God why do I have to love you so much?” Don’t make it sound so dramatic.
Niall: M’pretty sure yelling it in the middle of a “passionate argument” is the same as jus sayin it in an argument babe but okay.
Delilah: It’s totally different, you’re just a dumb boy you wouldn't understand.
Q: Rumor has it you two broke up briefly while Niall was on tour just after releasing Flicker. Is that true?
Delilah: Yes it’s true. Couples take breaks. Look at Ross and Rachel, it worked out fine for them.
Niall: Really ya gonna bring Ross and Rachel into dis? They suffered fo a few years before actually bein happy...
Delilah: I mean are you upset that I forgave you too soon?
Q: Why did you two break up?
Delilah: Yeah Niall why did we break up?
Niall: Yer such an arse. Uhhh can we skip dis one? We’re allowed like one skip right?
Delilah: Nope. The people want to know and you always say you’re a man of the people.
Niall: I cheated. Next question please.
Q: What songs on Flicker are about Delilah?
Niall: None of em.
Delilah: Did you hear that world? I was not the muse for that sad ass album so stop blaming me for breaking this man’s heart.
Niall: Slow hands is bout her I guess, it was written after a date wit her to a bar so yeah, slow hands s’bout her.
Delilah: I'll allow that one.
Niall: Oh and So Long. But that’s not on the album so...but most of the songs I didn’t necessarily write wit anyone in mind more of an emotion I wanted ta get across.
Q: When the two of you were dating who was the best at keeping in touch with the other?
Niall: She was at first then I’d say it was pretty even once we got a bit mo serious. We always had a good long chat at the end of each day tho no matter if we only exchanged two texts throughout the day.
Delilah: In the beginning I was just nosey and wanted to know what he was doing all the time. Then I realized he legit is either in the studio or he’s playing golf or at some sort of event. We still do the phone call each night when he’s away.
Q: What’s something you love about each other?
Niall: Easy! Her love of life, she is someone that ya jus wanna be around cos she will make ya smile and makes ya ten times happier jus being in the same room as her.
Delilah: Awe you’re so sweet! I honestly love the fact Niall will never tell you anything just because he knows you want to hear it, he doesn’t sugar coat things and I know that sounds odd to like love that about someone but it’s just refreshing. I love knowing that if I ask him for his opinion it's going to be 100% honest and how he truly feels and sometimes it makes me want to smack him but mostly I just appreciate what he has to say.
Niall: Oh an I love her laugh.
Delilah: Niall also has a very nice ass so you can put that down as something I love as well.
Niall: Delilah Grace...m’not arguing though.
Q: So Niall this is mainly for you, how has it been dealing with how often Delilah posts about your private life since normally you like to keep that to yourself.
Delilah: Ohhhh good question!
Niall: I don’t mind it really, s’not like she posts pics of me doin anythin scandalous. I think she shows another side ta me dat the fans enjoy, it shows them dat I’m like I always say, a normal guy wit jus an abnormal job. Also her captions are jus...somethin else she has such a way wit words.
Delilah: He laughs so hard at the photos I post of him looking annoyed. He loves those the best.
Niall: I’d also say she’s da reason my posts have gotten a bit more personal. She’s helped me realize dat my Instagram an twitter doesn’t have ta jus be all Niall Horan the musician. The fans and everyone wanna jus get ta know me.
Delilah: You’re welcome world.
Q: So you two have been married for almost a year now right? What’s been the best part of being married?
Delilah: I get lots of free stuff, it’s pretty freakin great if I’m being honest.
Niall: Ignore her, yes we’ve been married almost a year now, hard ta believe s’only been a year.
Delilah: I mean having the girls seemed to take up a big part of the year so I’d honestly say the best part of being married so far is just knowing he’s fully mine now and I get to be in his life forever. Sounds lame when I say it out loud.
Niall: I think the best part is jus knowin that she’s there. Like she always has my back on anythin an bein able to point to her an be like “oh dats my wife.” I enjoy that quite a lot if m’bein totally honest wit ya.
Q: So the twins they are adorable by the way, what was your initial reaction when you found out you were having twins?
Niall: I absolutely almost shit myself it took me completely off guard.
Delilah: Same! But really I was kinda hoping I was having twins because lord was I getting huge kinda faster than I had anticipated.
Niall: It’s also in the long run good cos we only wanted two so like boom! One an done is what they say right?
Delilah: No one says that about kids you weirdo.
Niall: S’for sure a thing people say even bout kids.
Q: Who takes care of the kids more?
Delilah: Me, just because Niall has a job while I stay home all day in my sweatpants eating.
Niall: Obviously it’s Delilah, she is an actual angel fo everythin she does for the girls and myself even. An jus fo the record she doesn’t wear sweatpants all day, she eventually puts like dem leggin type pants on.
Delilah: Thanks honey.
Q: So Delilah what would you do if you came home to Niall asleep on the couch when he’s supposed to be watching the girls?
Delilah: It depends. If the girls are also asleep I’d probably cry at how cute they all look passed out.
Niall: Dey are way cuter dan me when they’re alseep.
Delilah: But if he’s asleep and they aren’t...oh hell will be raised in the Horan house. I’d probably smack him with a throw pillow and never let him live that moment down. Like even Shawn hasn’t fallen asleep while watching the girls yet and he’s only watched them after they are asleep so Niall and I can go have dinner alone.
Q: So is Shawn The Godfather?
Niall: Did he tell you to ask dat?
Delilah: He’s one of them yes.
Niall: We have two godfathers and two godmothers.
Delilah: We are just extra like that, don’t even ask why.
Q: Last question, how have you handled the fans response towards your relationship? The overall response seems to be everyone pretty much adore the two of you.
Niall: Oh it’s been great really, only a few people here an there have some shitty remark ta say but it’s always something stupid.
Delilah: I think after the first two years it just switched and it’s been for the most part pretty nice. I think at first the fans just didn’t know how serious this was going to be and everyone legit loves Niall so they wanted to make sure I was worthy of him. But I mean we’ve been together for so long now that they’ve fully accepted me.
Niall: Dey have realized she’s not goin anywhere. I mean she met me when I was still in One Direction like jus before the hiatus so she’s been through a lot wit me and the fans love er.
Delilah: Diall till death.
Niall: Oh yeah dats our Uh..what they call it? Ship name? Diall!
