My favorite headcanons, Dark Side Edition
Orange Side: "wow, you're including him?"
Yeah I know, I'm so great for doing so. - He is an instigator, he causes fights and debates constantly by blurting out an opinion he knows the other sides will hate just so he has an excuse to yell (he thinks it's fun.)
-He's naturally a loud guy, his whispers are barely quieter than normal talking.
-His handwriting is TERRIBLE. No one can really read it, except Remus because he taught him how to decode it. Just so he can annoy Janus when he can't figure it out.
-Remus and Janus are his best friends, and he specifically loves to make Logan mad.
-He's tried to make Patton mad and has only succeeded once, and never again. He keeps trying though.
-Loves spicy things. Probably eats takis for breakfast.
-dyes his hair flaming hot-Cheeto ass red, and he's iconic for it.
-He wears leather jackets... yeah...yeah he does.
-Cronus. that is his name ty
Remus:
Where.... where do I even BEGIN
-He's slightly taller than Roman and holds it over him constantly "Oh you can't reach the top shelf? let the BIGGER brother get it for you."
-Remus definitely writes fanfiction. Thats it.
-He is very musically gifted with instruments, especially the Tuba. He will convince Roman to perform with him and make him sing along to his tuba for 'brotherly bonding.'
-The first one to get lost if they went to an amusement park together, Logan would have the map and then turn around to see Remus is already missing.
-Dude is weirdly extremely flexible, like nearly contortionist-level of flexibility.
-he made a deal to marry Janus if they were single by 40. He initiated it and bothered him until Janus sighed and went "Fineeee."
-Like Roman, he sings on a daily basis, just... a lot more purposefully obnoxious.
-He likes to go into Romans room and make things just out of place, like stealing a single bulb from his fairy lights or moving things slightly to the left.
-He loves to play hide and seek, sometimes he'll just hide for no reason until someone finds him and screams when he gets scared.
-He also loves Disney, but he likes bringing up the disturbing behind-the-scenes facts that he knows.
-He actively thinks about the Roman Empire, as a joke.
-He does his makeup too, and he often does Romans' makeup too- it's one of the few parts of the day when they don't argue at all.
Janus:
-Despite loving snakes, he actually has pet rats. Two of them.
-He's the kind of guy to start a fight between two people and then begin recording when it escalates "Oooh did he just call you that? You going to let that slide?"
-In AU's where they have powers, I like him having the ability to shapeshift into people he makes a connection with. So when he finally opens up with someone he transforms into them and back to his normal self to prove that he cares y'know...
-He does care a lot, even though he fights often with the other sides he sees them all as his friends. Remus will always be who he's closest with.
-He and Virgil being bitter exes makes sense. idk it just does. I don't make the rules.
-His favorite board game is Secret Hitler. Because he is great at it.
-Birds creep him out, he doesn't like how they look up close and how loud they can be.
-Made a fake account posting fake science facts and tagging Logan, so Logan will go on long tangents about how wrong he is. Then he will reply with "Nope."
-Every time someone asks him to hand them something he will say "No." and hand it to them anyway.
-Makes sure everyone is taking care of themselves, he may not get along with everyone all the time but at the end of the day, he makes sure they are properly taken care of.
-would definitely get a two-headed snake tattoo.
- he NEEDS snakebites, like... c'mon.

I’ve been watching a lot of Thomas Sanders lately, especially Sanders Sides, and came across the video where a friend does Thomas up in makeup based on each side (I’d link the video but you know how tumblr is)
I literally never wear or draw makeup, so I don’t know makeup artists will feel about this

im,,,, thinking abt the podcast au,,,
im not in the mood to write a full fic or anything tonight but i really want to talk about prinxiety so i will give you some podcast au headcanons and fun facts :)
roman and virgil met through remus!!
virgil poked fun at roman at lot when they first met bc it made roman do a funny lil ‘im annoyed with u’ face, and roman did it back bc 1. retribution and 2. he thought virgil was cute and had no idea how to deal with it at first
they became friends after hanging out more (and making fun of a loooot of movies together)
roman enjoys talking about action, romance,fantasy/sci fi, and classically/historically-inspired content more, virgil likes horror, indie, and mystery stuff more
we made jokes about virgil being british, but really his dad is british and his mom’s american, so he has a british twinge and uses a mix of lingo but he doesn’t really have a full accent
roman still loves to mimic him whenever his british lilt comes through tho
^^ roman is from the southern tip of the midwest, so virgil absolutely jumps on chances to poke fun at any southern or midwest twinge in his voice or any weird colloquial terms he uses
(remus is also obviously from the midwest, logan is from new england, patton from the pacific northwest, and janus the south)
virgil basically dresses like an e-boy
on the tiktok account roman started for podcast PR, half the videos are just him filming virgil inconspicuously and adding trendy audios and dramatic filters and weird captions
they film a lot of their recording sessions and post em on youtube!! (fans love it bc it gives so much content for ‘virgil giving roman heart eyes for ten minutes straight’ compilations and the likes)
^^ roman wore all black one time and half the recording is just virgil staring at him. editors had a field day
there are SO many compilations and collages of them sitting in the studio chairs weird, virgil especially. the boy cannot sit normally if his life depends on it
virgil LOVES plague doctor stuff (as does remus) and has a little plague doctor plush that sits on the arm of his chair during recording sessions
roman has an ace flag hung up behind his chair!!
there’s one clip every fan has seen and loves where they’re doing a “best friends” quiz and roman mentions virgil’s favorite snack being m&m’s and reese’s pieces mixed in with his popcorn, and he just goes on a whole tangent about how he sneaks boxes of m&ms and reese’s pieces to the theaters because virgil doesn’t like paying a lot for the boxes at the concession stand-
-and virgil kinda pauses and very fondly says ‘you do, yeah. i don’t know how you sneak them in every time.’
it was such a simple moment but fans lost their damn minds
(in that same video, virgil spends a whole two minutes talking about roman’s cat, lyris, and roman sniffs “do you only love me for my cat?” and virgil immediately says “no- well, a little bit”)
fans also lost their minds the time virgil came in late and brought roman his favorite coffee order and roman just went 🥺🥺

ik this is very out of nowhere ask but honest to god i think youre the only person in this fandom who could see the appeal of 2016/7!thomas with 2020!sides and vise versa... i think about it all the time but i have no one to talk about it with. I just had to say it to someone before I went crazy
[clasps hands together] RIGHT. so. obviously for the sake of this we’re ignoring the fact that thomas is the sides and vice versa and any change to one would mean a change to the other (e.g. 2020!thomas’s sides would change to reflect him in that moment, probably) - that’s cool and good, i just needed to get this out of the way. presumably this is like a time travel thing, or maybe we’re just doing a casual hand-wavey magical swappage thing. i don’t think the exact details matter. Let's get straight to the juicy stuff.
2020!Thomas, og sides:
Current Thomas is, paradoxically, somehow More Balanced than his 2016 counterpart AND a million times worse off, mental health-wise
Fuck imagine how completely baffled Janus would be that Thomas not only knows of his existence but also his NAME.
Thomas, despite being very confused and kind of frightened (they're all wearing their old costumes?? They're all referring to each other by DAD and ANXIETY and LOGIC what's going ON) is kind of absolutely delighted that for once, he knows many things that his Sides do not. Especially Janus. He gets to be cryptic and ominous towards Janus. He probably shouldn't be enjoying this as much as he is
I like to image Remus had been carefully saving up all of his best material (including his big musical number) for his grand entrance in DWIT. Which is why he's kind of bewildered when (after being summoned so, so much earlier than he ever thought he would be) Thomas only just kind of winces at 'have you ever imagined killing your own brother' and shapeshifted Joan eating a severed hand. I mean, rude? What's going on - wait, is Thomas harmonizing with the gory bits in Forbidden Fruit? Nevermind, this fucking rocks he's all for it
Current!Thomas: :D!! VIRGIL!!! 2016!Virgil, who is a grumpy sardonic cagey edgelord who's never known anything but mildly disgusted antagonism between him and Thomas: fucking what
Thomas is so weirdly nice to Anxiety that literally everybody there is suspicious. Are we sure this is Thomas. Is Thomas having some sort of weird midlife crisis.
Thomas, who has been keeping an obsessive list in his head of Literally Everything That's Gone Wrong In His Life Over The Last Four Years: okay so first of all we're going to have a serious talk about dealing with repression, but the moment we're done with that we're going to mess with the timeline so that my friends' wedding falls on any day but the homestuck day -
current!sides, 2016!Thomas:
Obligatory 'what the fuck who are these new people and what are these new outfits and WHY DO YOU ALL SUDDENLY HAVE NAMES I THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST A FUN GOOFY QUIRKY THING OF MINE' but that's kind of obvious
Virgil: hey so Thomas: ! anxiety >:(((
Virgil, suddenly recalling all of his character development over the past few years: oh boy. Well, this isn't going to be fun at all huh
Roman trying to make the most of fouryearsago!Thomas to spend time with him and impress them because at this point Roman Is Still His Hero and he doesn't want to let that go
Logan, who has been keeping meticulous records of Thomas's Recent Downwards Mental Health Spiral For The Last Four Years: My Time Has Come. Thomas, here's what you need to do -
Patton, who is fully aware how skewed his perspective has been and how much that's affected Thomas's mental health: okay, kiddo. Time to have a very very long talk about not relying on my morality perspective
Roman: oh and don't bother trying to get a new location for filming, the echo in the Mind Palace set fuckin sucks
Remus gets a second chance at doing an intro, and he is living for it because now he can fix literally every little thing about DWIT that he ever thought about changing, and also crank the dial up to one million now that he knows how Thomas is going to react. Almost nobody else is as enthusiastic about this as he is
Thomas: and who's this guy Janus: i am your overwhelming honesty and also your favorite, hello Virgil: >:|

A Romantic
In honor of Aro spec week: take this fic.
TW blood, self-deprecating/suicidal thoughts but it’s not self harm. Background Prinxiety.
Ao3 || Main Tumblr
"Are you sure?" Patton asked.
"Padre, I'm positive! Just go knock on the door and ask him!" Roman exclaimed.
"But we don't even know if he's gay!" Patton cried, looking up at the taller man.
"Patton," Roman began, putting his hands on his friend's shoulders. "If a single man on this floor is straight, I will burn my Disney movies."
Patton chuckled at Roman's solemn expression.
"I'll hold you to it Princey!" Virgil called from the other room, overhearing Roman's statement.
"Now go, and find your true love!" Roman pushed Patton towards Logan's door.
Facing the door, all of Patton's insecurities and doubts began to surface.
"Well, um, couldn't we wait until June? Then it'll be pride month, and surely he'll have a flag or something. Then we'll know his sexuality and can avoid any awkward confrontations. It's only a few more months!" Patton pleaded.
"No more stalling! You've had a crush on Logan for a year and I cannot stand the pining any longer. Not that I don't enjoy listening to you ramble about Logan," Roman assured Patton.
"It's only fair. Before you and Virgil started dating, I had to listen to you rant about him," Patton teased.
"Rants about me? What did he say?" Virgil asked, approaching the two.
"All good things, of course, My Chemically Imbalanced Romance," Roman said, shooting a warning look at Patton.
Patton giggled. "Well, at first he was annoyed by you. My favorite times were when he'd be complaining about you and compliment you on accident."
Virgil raised an eyebrow at Roman, amused, while he spluttered halfheartedly.
"You don't have any proof," Roman protested fruitlessly.
"Oh, really? Well, I didn't want to do this, but you leave me no choice," Patton unlocked his phone and scrolled through his videos. "Here it is!" he cried triumphantly, pressing play.
There wasn't any video, but there was audio. Roman's voice issued from the device and Patton turned up the volume.
"He's so stubborn and cynical! We're complete opposites, and we can never agree on anything! It makes me so frustrated when he smirks at me and challenges me with those warm, brown eyes. A-And when he calls me nicknames and insults Disney! He's so insufferable with his sarcasm, and his perfect hair, and his amazing smile, and his negative attitude."
The recording ended. Roman was blushing furiously while Virgil smirked slyly. Patton had to stifle his laughter behind his hand.
"Perfect hair?" Roman refused to meet Virgil's gaze. "Amazing smile? Warm, brown eyes that you refuse to look at?"
Roman glanced at Virgil warily, unsure of his reaction. He was unsure of his own reaction. Why was he embarrassed? He complimented his boyfriend. No big deal. But his heart was racing.
Virgil smiled at Roman warmly. "I love you."
"I love you too." Roman returned.
"So cute," Patton whispered to himself. He was still trying to stall for time. Maybe they'd forget about Logan, and he could escape.
No such luck, however. Roman pressed a soft kiss to Virgil's lips, who returned it. Then, stepping out of his reverie, Virgil turned to Patton. Holding his boyfriend's hand, he smiled.
"Go talk to Logan."
Patton groaned inwardly. His distraction had failed. "Please kiddo? Don't make me. What if we date, and then break up, and it's really awkward because we live in the same apartment?"
"Stop worrying. That's my job. And for an anxious guy, I'm pretty confident about you and Logan," Virgil told Patton. "Go. Just do it and get it over with."
"Storm Cloud's right. Go talk to him." Roman said,
"Fine. I'll go," Patton sighed, his heart filled with dread. "But I'm not a Happy Pappy Patton."
"You will be after you start dating Logan. Now, go!" Roman pushed him towards Logan's door, but this time Patton didn't turn back.
He strode up to the door and knocked. (Yes, it was the same knock as Anna.)
Logan opened the door. "Hello, Patton. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Hi, Logan. Can we talk?" Patton nervously fidgeted with the cardigan draped over his shoulders.
Logan opened the door wider and gestured for Patton to enter. "Would you like to speak in here?"
"Sure," Patton said, walking past Logan and into the orderly room.
"Would you like to take a seat?" Logan offered.
Logan sat down on his bed, Patton selecting a small stool by Logan's desk.
"What did you wish to talk to me about Patton?" Logan inquired, wondering what Patton could've come for.
"Um, well... I just wanted to ask you something." Patton said reluctantly, his eyes darting around the room, looking anywhere but Logan's face.
"Yes?" Logan asked.
Patton twiddled his thumbs, trying to work up the courage to ask him. "Do you want to, uh, go on a date? W-With me?"
A look of surprise crossed Logan's face, but he swiftly regained his composure. "Oh. Well, Patton, I apologize but-"
"Yeah, you're not gay, or not attracted to me. I'm sorry for bothering you." Patton interrupted and made for the door.
Logan grabbed Patton's wrist and pulled him onto the bed beside him.
"It's not that you're not attractive or likable or any of the lies you're feeding yourself right now. I wish to explain." Patton met Logan's eyes, seemingly composed despite the rejection he'd just endured.
"Do you know the term asexual?"
"Yes, it means someone doesn't experience sexual attraction," Patton said, surprising Logan who usually had to explain it to others.
"I'm asexual," Patton patiently waited for Logan to get to the point. "But, asexuality doesn't mean I don't experience any attraction. However, I am also aromantic, which means that I don't experience romantic attraction. Similar to asexual, but still infinitesimally different."
"Infinitely," Patton corrected Logan.
"What?"
"Infinitesimal means very small. Infinite means large."
"Oh," Logan blinked in surprise. "I guess you're right."
Patton giggled.
"Anyway, I just wished to convey my feelings. I do not feel any romantic feelings for you, but I hope we can still be friends."
"Of course!" Patton exclaimed, jumping up. "I would never stop being friends with you, Logan."
Logan, familiar with Patton's tendency to hide his true feelings, was worried. "Are you okay?"
"Of course. I'm perfectly fine. I was expecting much anyway. I'm gonna go and get ready for work now, okay?"
Logan nodded, his worries not assuaged.
Patton left, not noticing, or ignoring, Logan's concerned look. He headed into the kitchen where Roman and Virgil were eagerly awaiting his return.
"Well, you don't have to burn your Disney movies," Patton began cautiously.
"He said yes?" Roman cried.
"No. He's aromantic and asexual. He's not straight, but he's not gay."
Virgil donned an expression of sympathy. "Are you alright Patton?" he asked, crossing the kitchen to where the rejected man stood.
"Of course I'm alright. I don't know why you're all so concerned for me. That's my job! I'm the dad!" Patton exclaimed, beaming.
"Dads need to be cared for too. You matter to us and we want to make sure you're okay." Roman said softly.
"I'm fine," Patton repeated stubbornly. He snatched a cupcake from the counter top and headed to the bathroom. "I'm going to get ready for work now."
Virgil and Roman watched him go silently, him eating the blue cupcake.
Patton shut the door to the bathroom and tossed the empty wrapper into the trash can. He stared pensively into the mirror. He let out a few shaky breaths, trying to get himself under control.
A tear slipped down his cheek, but was quickly wiped away by its owner.
Patton's favorite thing about himself was his eyes. Not their color or lashes. He liked that when he cried, his eyes didn't get red. He could be miserable, but nobody would notice. His eyes wouldn't get red and his nose wouldn't run. He could sit for hours, tears silently pouring down his face, but no one would ever know. It was his burden, not anyone else's. If he was sad, he didn't want to burden his problems on others.
And yet he longed for it. He longed for someone to notice. He longed for someone to take care of him. No matter how he protested or lied to the others, he couldn't lie to himself.
And the truth was, he was crushed. He respected Logan's sexuality, and he didn't blame his friend. He knew that it wasn't Logan's fault or his own.
Yet his heart refused to believe it.
It's your fault. A voice whispered. You're not desirable. No one would ever care for you. The only thing you can do right is lie. Hide. You're lying to your friends. If they knew the truth, they'd abandon you in a minute. All you do is hide and lie. They don't need to be burdened by you. Just leave them alone.
He tried to stop the tears, but the flow seemed endless. The voice was right. Why would anyone care? He was awful. He couldn't do anything right. Not even ask someone out on a date. Logan would never love him.
He knew this.
All of a sudden, Patton was racked with coughs. It felt like he was dying. A small part of him was relieved. Finally, the pain would be over.
But he didn't die. He leaned over the sink, trying to expel whatever was in his throat.
A small blue petal hit the bottom of the sink, the edges painted red with blood.
"I should stop decorating my cupcakes with real flowers," Patton muttered to himself, wiping his lips and washing the blood from his hands. He made himself presentable and left to go confront the world.

My God if I could only say, I'm holding every breath for you
Description: Patton Hart has been pining for his best friend's twin brother and his boyfriends for as long as he can remember. Word Count: 3067 Ships: Patton/Remus/Janus/Virgil, background Logince, established Remus/Janus/Virgil Warnings: Remus being Remus, twins squabbling AO3 This is a gift fic for @sunshineandteddybears for the @sanderssidesgiftxchange. The “summer romance” piece kinda got away from me, but this is definitely found family! I hope you enjoy!
Patton was wiping down the counters, about 15 minutes after closing, sunset shining through the windows as he hummed along to the radio, a sense of peace radiating through the store.
Of course, that’s when chaos erupted.
“Pattycakes, you gotta save me!” Remus cried as he threw the door open so roughly the windchimes actually smacked against the window above the door before falling back down and jingling merrily to announce his presence. He ran behind the counter with no hesitation, gripping onto Patton’s waist. (Patton only shivered because of the burst of adrenaline. That was the only reason. No other possibilities. Nope.) Remus angled them both towards the doorway just as Roman came bursting in with the same amount of urgency, fire in his eyes and shirt dripping wet and seemingly tinted a particularly garish shade of greenish-brown.
“Remus, you can’t hide behind Patton forever, you bastard!” he seethed, and Logan, Janus, and Virgil came through the door behind him, much more calm, almost to the point where Patton would call them bemused. Logan took a seat at one of the small tables along the wall, pulling out his phone with a very evident intention to simply wait the whole debacle out, while Janus and Virgil both leaned up against the glass case in front of Patton. “Get out here and face me, you coward!” Roman bellowed again, clearly not giving up anytime soon.
Patton grabbed an empty paper towel roll from next to him and turned at the waist to whack Remus in the head with it, “Remus you cannot use me as a human shield, go answer for your crimes.” “Kinky. I’d much rather have you issue my punishment,” Remus joked with an eyebrow wiggle, then cackled when Patton made a strangled noise and shoved him back to the other side of the counter. However, as soon as he was in range, Roman grabbed hold of him and pulled him into a headlock and his laughter turned swiftly into a shriek of “Oh shit!”
They were 12 years old, tearing through the woods in a dual-friend-group game of manhunt the summer before 7th grade. Virgil was hot on everyone’s heels and adrenaline was coursing through their veins. Patton leapt over a log and turned a corner, hunting for a good place to hide.
He heard a curse of “Oh shit!” echo through the woods before the sound of three branches breaking in succession, a huge crash, and a subsequent groan. He quickly pivoted and went sprinting back towards the house, and the sound, easily finding Remus splayed across the forest floor even in the dim light of the moon.
“Why would you climb a tree, silly goose? Don’t you know the branches are weak that high? Scared me half to death!” he chided as he fell to his knees beside him, already pulling band-aids out of his wallet in his pocket.
Remus grinned impishly up at him, and Patton felt his breath catch in his throat, fumbling with the wallet briefly in a way he prayed the other boy didn’t notice. “What’s a lil fear in the face of a bunch of excitement, Patty?” he crooned, and Patton shoved a handful of band-aids at him with little delicacy in his haste to move past the tease. “Besides, I have the best nurse in the world to patch me up when my fun does go south, apparently.”
Patton flushed and turned away, positive Remus could tell even in the weak light, but he couldn’t keep the earnestness out of his voice, “I’ll always patch you up, Ree. Promise.”
Remus didn’t get a chance to respond before Virgil burst through the bushes and tapped them both on the shoulder to get them out and a loud, extended debate began about the validity of the “injury time out”.
Janus leaned on the counter in front of Patton, jolting him out of his reverie. He pointed at the menu, with three shiny new additions at the bottom, “You finally manage to find a flavor sweeter than you, sugar?”
Virgil shoved him out of the way with an eye roll and a fond grin, thankfully distracting from how Patton felt his cheeks would melt the freezers. “He can’t stop flirting even for two seconds, I swear.”
Janus gasped dramatically, swooning against the counter and batting his eyes at Virgil like a starlet in an old black and white, “Maybe if you and Remus gave me the attention I deserve I wouldn’t need to hunt it down in beautiful, endearing ice cream shop owners.”
Remus snorted despite the way he was currently trying to claw his way out of his brother’s hold while being noogied like they were still teenagers and not fully grown and employed adults, “We could give you all the attention in the world, Janny, it would never stop you from flirting with Patton.”
Janus sniffed derisively at them, then cocked his head to the side as the song changed and smiled softly, “Hey, I know this song.”
Patton smiled brightly back, “Yeah of course, have it on all the playlists for the shop!”
“Simp!” Remus called over just as brightly, and Patton glared back at him, assuming it was aimed at him.
“Ok, you look miserable,” Janus said, making Patton jump from where he was staring down at his water glass watching the liquid swirl around the glass as he moved it in little circles and maybe lamenting his singledom a little bit in the face of a dance floor full of sappy teenagers in fancy clothes enjoying the crisp June night and each other as their last hurrah before graduation.
Patton plastered on a smile, “Oh Jan, I am perfectly hap-”
Janus arched a brow at him, tsking lightly and just loud enough for Patton to hear and stop speaking. “Don’t try to lie to me, I know what you look like when you are actually happy, Patton. And also you’re a god-awful liar.”
“...yeah ok. I’m a little bit lonely, maybe, with Ro and Lo gettin their dance on for the romantic stuff. But I’m not mad, they’re in love, and I told them to go hang on their own. We’ll hang out at the beach house after!” He couldn’t help but glance at the dance floor, where Logan was leading Roman in a waltz that was perfectly on time with the music, lost in their own little world.
“Well Ree and V bailed for the beach early. Not exactly their style of music or dancing, or my vibe to make them do something they don’t enjoy just to get my feet stepped on. Why don’t we be miserable together?” The song changed, to a song with a more Latin-inspired beat that Patton knew only one of every 10 words to, and Janus smirked, “Maybe you and I can even make the most of it and I can score a salsa partner.” Janus ended his proposition with an exaggerated wink and bow, and Patton took his offered hand with a genuine grin.
Janus didn’t miss a beat, switching eye contact to Roman on a dime, “Hey, did you know Remus was the one who’s been screwing with your guitar’s tuning?”
“NONONO HE’S LYING,” Remus cried as Roman tightened his hold and doubled down on his attack, this time poking at his ribs and making Remus shriek in laughter.
As Janus watched Roman wrestle Remus down to the floor of the shop, clearly satisfied with the reaction he managed to get, Virgil nudged him over with his hip to take his place leaning across the counter and whisper conspiratorially, “I bet it was actually Logan. Bastard can get away with murder, I just know it.”
Patton couldn’t help but giggle, with Virgil’s playful smile and dancing eyes across from him, so open and trusting in a way he never was unless it was just the group of them. He smirked a bit, nibbled at his lip in consideration, then leaned in to say in an equally conspiratorial style, “Logan’s only involved to see how long it’ll be before anyone catches on. My record stands.”
“You are a trickster Patton Hart,” Virgil gasped in mock-scandal. He wagged his finger with his hand on his hip in a not-half-bad impression of Patton during a lecture, though he was unable to match his Patton-ted Disappointed Frown while he was grinning, “I’d never expect my partner in crime to be doing something like this without telling me, shame on you. You know I always have your back.”
It was their last weekend of freedom before they started high school, and as per usual both twins had both their friends sleeping over. Patton woke before Logan and Roman, also as per usual, and snuck out of Roman’s room down to the kitchen, only to jolt as he found the light already on and Virgil sitting on the kitchen counter.
“Whatcha doin?” Virgil asked, legs kicking in the air in front of the cabinets lazily.
“Gonna try to make pancakes! I’m positive I won’t burn them this time, I just know it,” Patton enthused, then squinted suspiciously at Virgil, “What’re you doing?”
“Oh just hanging around, keeping an eye out in case anyone tries to burn the house down again so I can help out. Figured they might need a partner in arson crime, ya know, and I could let them know I’ve got their back,” Virgil teased, nudging Patton’s leg with a sock clad foot. He looked so precious with his sleep mussed hair and eyeliner from the night before smudged under his eyes that Patton couldn’t even bring himself to argue that he really didn’t need a babysitter. Honestly, he couldn’t even begin to pretend he didn’t want the excuse to spend more time with him.
The twins’ argument grew more heated, finally managing to distract Patton from where he was a bit lost in the way Virgil’s eyes lit up when he was amused.
“You fucked up one of my favorite shirts!” Roman screeched as he attempted to give his brother a wet willy.
“You put red koolaid in my shampoo two weeks ago, you baby!” Remus cried back, shoving at his shoulder to try to get him off, and succeeding rolling them only for Roman to roll them straight back.
“I know you were the one who put my script out of order,” Roman fired back.
“You should have been off book anyway! And you broke bro code and told Virgil I was the one who deleted his X-Files off the DVR. You are just as bad as me.”
“You gave mom’s computer a porn virus and blamed it on me!” Roman protested, and everyone else seemed to simultaneously sigh as they descended into their usual back and forth of dredged-up pettiness.
“Oh you're still - you squashed my bug collection.”
“You left me stranded in the yard after Remy’s homecoming party senior year.”
“That was absolutely justified, you made me listen to you wax poetic about Logan’s fucking lips for 3 hours.”
“You made me listen to you wax poetic about Patton’s EVERYTHING for 13 YEARS”
Everyone in the shop simultaneously went silent in a blink of an eye. Virgil went white as a sheet and swung to look at the twins with wide eyes, Janus gripped the counter white-knuckled and looked at Patton with a similarly stunned expression, and Remus turned nearly as red as the sash on Roman’s favorite Prince Charming costume. He shoved Roman off of him for real, a more severe growl to his voice as he seemed to realize there was no way to play it cool, “You are such a fucking dick!”
Roman stammered for a moment, clearly trying to digest the change in tone and the weight of what he’d said, before waving his arms above his head in apparent bafflement, “It’s not like he didn’t know you all were into him!”
“Roman,” Logan spoke up suddenly, gesturing at Patton and what Patton knew had to be a completely shell-shocked expression.
Roman looked up and went just as wide-eyed as the others, “Pat… did... did you not know?”
“...all of you?” Patton asked, then winced as his voice cracked in shock. He watched Virgil flinch and seem to retreat into his hoodie out of the corner of his eye, and Janus’ face smoothed over into a perfect mask of calm in the blink of an eye. He felt his heart break just a little bit at the disappointment in both of their eyes at what he was sure they saw as a rejection.
Logan grabbed Roman’s arm and yanked him away roughly, though Roman followed easily, “You all clearly need to communicate. I will handle this one.”
“Don’t wanna know about you handling my brother, poindexter,” Remus joked hollowly, sounding almost like it was a reflex with none of his usual cackle behind it.
Logan rolled eyes and headed out the door, tugging behind him a Roman who was fervently whispering, just barely audibly, “He didn't know, how did he not know,” to himself over and over again.
There’s silence in the shop for a while, just the sound of the radio faintly playing over the loudspeakers echoing off the walls as they all just stare at each other, not knowing how to start. Then Janus took a deep breath and spoke first, “Patton, I refuse to speak for these two clowns, but I will absolutely tell you that I, at the very least, have had feelings for you for many years, feelings which i was unaware I was not making perfectly clear, or that there was a chance of any sort of reciprocation.”
“Around 7 years for me, give or take. That first morning we made pancakes together,” Virgil added quietly, fiddling with the zipper on his sleeve.
Remus averted his gaze, looking nervous in the way Patton had only seen the day before he confessed to Virgil and Janus in high school, and admitted in the quietest voice Patton’d ever heard him use, “I don’t know exactly when, Pattycakes. You’ve always been there and as far as I’m concerned I’ve loved you just as long. And-and I just assumed it wasn’t returned.”
Patton swallowed thickly, trying to push back tears because he knew these boys and knew they would take them for disappointment rather than the joy they were. He dove at Remus first, vaulting the counter the way he always scolded Roman against and sliding to his knees next to the other man on the floor before crushing him in a hug. He flailed back at Janus and Virgil with one hand to pull them in as well, “Come here, all of you, we’ve lost so much valuable cuddle time!”
Patton was pretty sure Janus broke the sound barrier with how quickly he was plastered to his side and burying his face in his hair, and Virgil wasn’t far behind, wrapping an arm around his waist and burying his face in the crease of his neck and shoulder. Patton took that moment to be a bit daring himself and press a kiss to the corner of Remus’ lips, then giggled brightly when Remus grabbed hold of his cardigan and used it to pull him back in to kiss him full on the mouth with just as much passion and impulsiveness and laughter as Patton had always imagined. His mustache tickled Patton’s nose a bit but he leaned into it, humming happily in the back of his throat and feeling like a puzzle piece clicked into place.
Virgil only gave them a minute before he untucked his face from Patton’s neck and grouched that he wanted a turn. Remus let Patton go with a very put-upon sigh that didn’t match his playful grin, flicking Virgil on the nose lightly. “You gotta give him his kisses or he’ll never shut the fuck up,” he fake-whispered.
Patton grinned and turned readily to Virgil, and his lips met Patton’s in a much gentler dance. His kiss was no less deep or passionate for its caution, and his hands cupped his face like he feared Patton would float away if he didn’t hold tight. His fingers curled and twitched upwards like they wanted to bury themselves in his hair but didn’t want to overstep, so Patton took the initiative to grip the back of his neck and tilt his own head to encourage Virgil to do what he wished.
Janus was more patient, waiting for them to part for breath a few minutes later before taking hold of Patton’s chin from Virgil without a word and gently but firmly turning Patton towards him. Janus’ kiss could only be described as a caress, light and teasing and peppered with soft nips to his bottom lip before building up to something more solid. His warm hands rubbed calmingly up and down Patton’s spine and over his shoulders like he couldn’t figure out where he wanted to touch first.
Remus soon demanded he get another shot, then Virgil wanted another, then Janus again, leaving Patton so beyond cloud 9 he could barely think any more. They spent at least 20 minutes there on the floor, lost in each other, rotating kisses that were long overdue, letting their actions make the confessions their words hid from for years, not daring to move and break the spell of the moment.
Then a camera shutter sounded, paired with a bright flash of light that made them all jolt and look up in surprise.
“I said communicate you know, not make out on the floor,” Logan sighed, digging through his wallet to pull a 20 out to hand to Roman, who was grinning victoriously.
“I’m sorry for being a dick, but I had to do something and I told Logan the “accidental slip” would work,” Roman said as he pressed a triumphant kiss to Logan’s cheek and pocketed the 20, “But you have to admit it was a pretty great performance on my part.”
“Can’t believe I was betrayed by my best friends, I don’t know whether I owe you a scolding or a fruit basket,” Patton lamented playfully, cheeks hurting from how wide he was smiling. Janus ruined what little remained of the facade even more as he shifted slightly and pulled him into his lap and Patton clung tight to Virgil and Remus’ hands, with no intention of disconnecting any time soon.

One last huge thank you to @strongindependentcheesecake for beta reading this whole thing. I appreciate it.
Chapter 1 - Chapter 2 - Chapter 3 - Chapter 4
Summary: The lucky few who have a soulmate are born with heterochromia, with their left eye being the color of their soulmate’s eyes and their right eye being their own color. Not only was Virgil one of the lucky few to have a soulmate, but he was given four. His left eye changed colors every time he blinked, rotating between his four soulmates’ eye colors. His rotating eye colors caused him to be a bit of an outcast growing up, but when he finally leaves for college, things start to fall into place. This is the journey of five strangers finding each other.

Patton was very, very, very excited. It was finally time. They had all finished school and they were finally moving in together!!
Patton couldn't help but be giddy as he helped bring up boxes into their shared condo. While it was more expensive than getting an apartment, with four of them (hopefully five, soon!), the extra space was very much needed.
Patton was just so happy to finally have his three soulmates together. He couldn't help but constantly be hugging on one of them. While it was a bit inconvenient while they were unpacking boxes, none of them dared complain about it when Patton was pressing such soft kisses all over their faces.
When they had unpacked enough boxes to be considered livable, they all collapsed onto the mattress on the floor, their bed frame coming later that week.
"We need to go grocery shopping tomorrow. We can not live off the snack cakes and cheez-itz Patton brought," Logan said.
"That's how I lived throughout high school," Virgil said.
"I can not and will not let you resume such a diet," Logan responded.
"Well tonight, I'm ordering take-out," Roman said as he pulled out his phone.
Nobody objected. They were all too tired to even think of going to buy things to cook with. And then they'd have to unpack the dishes and dear god Patton was getting exhausted just thinking about it.
Forty minutes and a bunch of Chinese take-out containers later, the four of them were back on the mattress.
"The spare room can be a studio!" Roman mused. "Logan and I can use it for our writings while you two can use it to paint."
"I am quite excited to get the bookshelves up," Logan said. "The new ones we bought are very nice."
"I'll finally have a good place to keep all my records, and- hey, Pat? Are you okay?"
Patton wiped the tears that had quietly fallen down his face.
"It's just... I'm so happy to finally have all of us in a home together."
Virgil gave him a lopsided grin and pulled him against his chest. "I promise, the feeling is mutual."
"Well... almost all of us," Roman said, a hint of sadness in his smile. Patton paused to look at all of them, their beautiful eyes along with the golden one of their unfound soulmate.
"We'll find them soon," Patton whispered. "I'm sure."
"...I wonder what they'll think," Virgil muttered into Patton's hair. "When they find out that the four of us have been together for a while."
"I pray they're not alone," Roman muttered as he moved to spoon Vigil, reaching for Logan over Patton. "We've been so lucky to find each other..."
"It accomplishes nothing to fret over it," Logan said as he turned on his side beside Patton and took Roman's hand. "We will meet them when the time is right."
"I know," Patton huffed as he leaned against Logan. "But I can't help but be impatient."
"I wonder what they're like," Roman mused.
"Lovely. Amazing. Perfect," Patton suggested.
"Let's not set too high expectations," Logan said. "Whoever they are, they will be wonderfully flawed and wonderfully human. Not perfect."
"Hmmm, I don't know about that, Specs," Roman said with his cocky grin. "You all thoroughly and fantastically beat all my expectations."
Logan scoffed, but didn't feel like starting an argument.
Patton yawned, soon followed by Roman, then Virgil, then finally Logan.
"We really should put sheets on the mattress," Logan said, though made no effort to move.
"Yeah, probably," Patton sighed. No one moved.
"Okay," Virgil said after a moment as he pushed himself out of Roman's arms, causing Roman to whine at the loss. "Let's go get ready for bed. We can not afford a dentist's visit for cavities so get up."
Roman groaned as he fell on his back, but eventually pushed himself up alongside Patton and Logan.
Logan did manage to persuade them to put bed sheets on the mattress, and as soon as the four of them had their arms around each other they immediately fell asleep, the busy day finally catching up to them.
*
Virgil huffed as he pulled his hoodie tighter around him. Though he had lived here for a few months now, he still wasn't used to the large crowds and today the crowd seemed worse than usual. People were touching him from all angles and he just wanted to get home.
He stared at his phone, doing his best to text Patton while watching where he was walking. He thought he was doing an okay job when he accidently hit shoulders with another pedestrian.
"Shit, I'm so sorry," Virgil said as he quickly got on his knees to help pick up the things that had fallen out of the stranger's arms: a book on philosophy, a stack of notes titled "Moral and Political Philosophy", a copy of "Lord of the Flies," and a pamphlet called  "How to Care for Your Royal Python."
The stranger said nothing as he pushed up his sunglasses and quickly grabbed the papers on the ground. Virgil glanced up to see sharp cheekbones and scarring on the left side of the stranger's face. He glanced back down before he could observe much closer details, not wanting to be caught staring.
He handed the last of the papers to the stranger, and the stranger walked off with a huff. Virgil, rattled by the whole encounter, now really just wanted to get home.
*
"Hello!" a chorus of calls came from the living room when Virgil opened the front door. Virgil smiled as he slipped off his shoes and he heard the sound of Patton running up to him.
Patton wrapped his arms tightly around Virgil's neck and Virgil held back, grin growing larger.
Patton eventually pulled back to press a quick kiss to Virgil's lips, then leaned back to look at Virgil's face when his smile dropped and his eyes widened.
"What?" Virgil asked anxiously as his grip tightened around Patton.
"Virgil, your eyes!" Patton exclaimed. That got the attention of Logan and Roman, and Virgil heard the couch shift before the two walked around the corner.
"What about them?"
Patton frowned. "You... you don't know?"
Roman gasped and Logan's eyes widened as well, and Virgil ran to the front bathroom.
His face paled when he saw what they were talking about. In the mirror, two gray eyes were staring at him.
It could've been anyone. How many people had he talked to today? The attendant at the subway, the woman he sat next to, the barista, the employees at the art store, the man he bumped into, the woman at the crosswalk-
"Virgil?" Patton asked quietly. Virgil glanced to the doorway to see the three of them looking at him with worried expressions. It was just then that Virgil realized he was struggling to breathe.
He reached for them and immediately Logan took his hands in his, guiding him to sit on the toilet lid as Logan led him through his breathing.
"I- I don't know who," Virgil said. "I never noticed anyone's eyes today. I wasn't paying attention, I-"
Roman shushed him gently as he squatted down to be eye level with Virgil. "It'll be okay, love," he assured. "We'll find them. We know they're here, in the city. I'm sure one of us will run into them soon."
Virgil just nodded as Roman ran his hand up and down Virgil's arm. He let himself lean against Roman, head resting on his shoulder, trying to ignore his running thoughts of what is their soulmate is just a tourist and they leave the city before they get to meet them, or what if it's forever until they meet again because the city's population is so large and-
"Virgil, dear, you're spiraling," Logan said as he squeezed Virgil's hands, causing Virgil to blink back into focus.
"Come to the couch with us, hm?" Roman asked as he placed gentle kisses on Virgil's head.
"We'll watch your favorite movie?" Patton asked. Virgil couldn't help but smile. They were trying to distract him from his own thoughts. It wasn't easy, but a few kisses and cuddles were usually enough to at least quiet them down a bit.
"Yeah, okay."
*
It was only a few days later as Roman was rushing down the subway station steps. Today was an audition he really wanted to make, so of course it was just his luck that he was almost running late. He quickly swiped his card and went through the turnstile, running towards the subway platform.
Panic rushed through him as he saw the doors closing. And in a move that he would call "brave" and Logan and Virgil would call "idiotic", he risked it. He ran towards the door and just barely made it through, though his momentum caused him to run straight into someone standing, causing them to let go of the hand rail and stumble back.
The man glared at him as he pushed Roman off, dusting off his shirt and readjusting his messenger bag.
"Oh, my sincerest apologies. I didn't... mean... to..." Roman trailed off. He saw a man with a large scar down the left side of his face, sharp cheekbones, and some of the prettiest eyes he had even seen. His right eye was golden brown, while his left was Patton's green. The man's eyes widened as he watched Roman's left eye morph from his gold into Roman's own dark brown, and a large grin grew on Roman's face.
The subway started and Roman was jolted forward. His soulmate reached out and steadied him.
"Hi," Roman said breathlessly.
"...Hi."
Neither said anything for a moment when his soulmate realized he was still holding onto Roman and quickly let go.
"I'm Roman."
"I'm-"
"One of the most gorgeous men I've ever had the privilege of seeing?" Roman said, so quietly he was almost worried his soulmate didn't hear it, but the slight blush growing on his cheeks told him that he did.
"I'm Janus."
"You have no idea how wonderful it is to have finally found you."
"I believe I have a better idea than you think."
Roman flushed.
"I see you've met the others," Janus said, just a hint of bitterness in his voice. "Which one did I happen to run into that day?"
"Virgil," Roman smiled. "You met Virgil. He'll be really glad I found you. He was really freaking out about it."
"Virgil," Janus repeated quietly to himself.
"And there's Patton, the green, and Logan, the blue. Oh, you must let me bring you to the apartment, they'll adore you. They'll be so excited when I tell them-"
Roman was interrupted by the subway intercom announcing its arrival to the next station. Alarm shot through Roman when he realized this was his stop, but he had something much more important to attend to now.
"This is your stop?" Janus asked, though it wasn't really a question. "Where are you headed?"
"An audition," Roman said as the subway came to a stop. Roman hadn't grabbed hold of the handrail and had to be yet again saved by Janus to keep from stumbling. "But it's not that important."
Janus raised his eyebrow, clearly not buying it.
"I can skip. Let me take you somewhere. Have you had lunch yet? I-"
"Oh, stop," Janus said as the doors opened. He grabbed a pen from his bag and took Roman's arm, pushing up his coat sleeve to quickly write his number. "I have a job interview to go to. And even if I didn't, I would not let you sacrifice your audition for a date."
Date. Date. It clicked in Roman's mind that he would not be able to take this gorgeous man out on dates and he felt his face grow red again.
"Call me when you're finished," Janus said as he pulled Roman's coat sleeve back down.
He then proceeded to take Roman's hand in his and bend down to kiss it gingerly. "And good luck," he looked up and said with what he knew was a charming smirk. He then proceeded to nearly push Roman off the subway right before the doors closed, Leaving Roman a bit flustered and speechless on the subway platform.
*
Roman walked out of that audition room fucking delighted. Using his newfound excitement and adrenaline, he felt he did really well at the audition, and the director and casting director seemed to like him pretty well. He was feeling good about his chances.
But now he could finally do what he truly wanted to do the whole time. He pulled out his phone and called Janus.
"Janus?" Roman asked as soon as the line was answered.
"Hello, Roman," Janus replied. And though Roman barely knew him, he could already hear the confident grin that accompanied the lilt in his voice. "Doing well?"
"Doing fantastic. I think it went really well. I think I really captured the intricacies of the character, and not to brag but I'm pretty sure the director loved me. She said that I- Oh. Uh. How did your interview go?"
Janus chuckled. "It went well. I'm glad to hear your audition did, as well. Care to tell me about it over tea?"
Roman was already too far gone. "I'd love that."
"I picked a spot a few blocks away from the subway station you got off. I'll text you the address. Shall I order you a drink?"
*
This cafe was not one of the quick and cheap coffee grabs Roman and Virgil would go to each morning. This one was larger, not crammed between two other buildings. It had floor to ceiling windows with hanging plants surrounding the edges. And inside, sitting at a table by the window, was Janus - sipping a cup of tea and reading.
Roman couldn't help the large grin that grew on his face when he saw Janus. The bell above the door dinged and a smile also grew on Janus' face when he looked up and saw Roman.
"Don't screw this up, don't screw this up, don't screw this-"
"I ordered your tea," Janus' smooth voice interrupted Roman's thoughts. "I also asked for honey. I know actors swear by it."
"Thank you," Roman smiled as he sat down, rubbing his sweaty palms on his pants.
"So you're an actor?" Janus asked as he lifted his tea to his lips. Roman flashed a grin he hoped was confident as his hands gripped his pants.
"Indeed I am!" Roman said. "I have a degree in theatre and have been acting my whole life."
Roman's knuckles turned white in his lap. He was unfamiliar with nerves that weren't the exciting rush before going onstage - these nerves made his leg shake and teeth clench, no matter how hard he tried to smile his mouth into relaxation.
"What about you? What do you do?" Roman asked as he made sure his hands weren't shaking before picking up his own cup.
"I'm getting my doctorate in philosophy, but with exams coming up I'd rather not spend a second thinking about it longer than I have to. Please, I'd love to hear more about you."
Roman desperately tried to think of anything he knew about philosophy, but of course his final soulmate would major in the one class Roman had to drop in college.
"What would you like to know?"
"What about me scares you?"
Roman quickly looked up from his teacup to look at Janus' face.
"Wha- Nothing about you scares me! Why would you say that?"
"Honey, your leg has been shaking nonstop and you won't look at me."
Roman gaped as he put his cup down. Janus' face fell just a tad, and Roman wouldn't have been able to tell if he hadn't been only focusing on Janus' expression.
"It's the scar, isn't it? I know it's off putting-"
"No!" Roman exclaimed, a bit louder than he meant to. "No. Trust me, I have been taken by your beauty the moment I saw you. The scar doesn't bother me at all."
Janus blinked in surprise before quickly recovering.
"If not that, then what's got you scared, dear?"
Roman hesitated before sitting back in his chair.
"When I met Logan, I met up with him in a coffee shop. I then proceeded to thoroughly fuck up the entire conversation. It took two weeks before we were able to spend time together like soulmates are supposed to."
"And you didn't want to fuck up this one?" Janus asked. Roman nodded, avoiding Janus' gaze.
Roman was startled when a gloved hand reached over and gently tiled his face up. Janus was looking at him with soft eyes, juxtaposed only by the huge smirk on his face.
"Roman, honey, I don't know the situation with Logan, but when a handsome man literally falls into my arms, what else am I supposed to do but be utterly taken?"
Roman blushed, and his embarrassment only grew when he chased after the hand that Janus took off his face. Janus chuckled and took Roman's hand across the table.
"The man the universe just gave me then proceeds to compliment me then offers to drop everything to spend time with me? How sweet. Naive, and a bit foolish, but so incredibly sweet."
Janus ran his thumb over Roman's knuckles the whole time. He leaned in across the table, and Roman couldn't help but follow.
"Trust me, dear Roman. Beautiful, courteous Roman. You don't have to worry about me."
And Roman was already gone.
*
Virgil was just lounging on the couch, scrolling through Tumblr when Patton got the phone call from Roman. He was going to bring their final soulmate to their home.
The first thing Virgil felt was relief. Relief that he hadn't screwed up, and that he hadn't missed the chance to find their final piece.
The second thing Virgil felt was joy. The three of them were ecstatic as Patton and Logan quickly tried to tidy up the apartment. Finally, after so many years of waiting, they were finally going to see them - they were on their way to their home.
The last thing Virgil felt was, unsurprisingly, anxiety. What if their final soulmate didn't like him? What if he somehow screwed up the introductions and their soulmate decided they didn't want anything to do with him? It didn't matter that Virgil had done this three times prior - meeting new people always stressed Virgil out, especially when the person was so important.
After what felt like an eternity (but was probably only twenty minutes), they heard the lock on the front door click. Patton reached for both Logan and Virgil's hands and squeezed them, and Virgil didn't know if it was to calm him or Patton himself.
Roman walked in with a wide smile on his face, and the man who followed behind him made Virgil's breath hitch.
He was even more gorgeous than Virgil remembered from the day they had run into each other. Here, Virgil could truly appreciate his features. And with no sunglasses to cover his eyes, Virgil got to watch as his eye faded from green, then blue, and finally into his own light brown.
Virgil couldn't help but glance over to Patton and Logan. Their eyes were both now only green and blue respectively, and Virgil felt a wave of fondness tighten in his chest. Their eyes were so perfect, so them. Part of Virgil knew he'd miss seeing his partners' eyes in each other, but most of him now was just in love with how beautiful they were.
Roman closed the door behind them.
"So this is-"
Before Roman could finish speaking, Patton cried out an "Oh!" and launched himself at the unsuspecting man, wrapping his arms around his neck and hugging him tightly.
The man was startled, and awkwardly patted Patton's back, but did nothing to push him away.
"I'm so happy to finally meet you!" Patton was crying. Their soulmate's mouth twitched up in a small smile.
"It's nice to meet you, too."
Patton reluctantly let go of their soulmate and gave him a sheepish smile.
"I'm Patton."
"Janus."
"Logan." Logan stepped forward and held out his hand. Janus shook it while Roman bit his lip to keep from laughing. It was an odd time to be so practical, Virgil thought, but another fond wave washed through him because that's just how Logan was.
Janus then looked over at Virgil.
"I've met you."
"Yeah, um. Sorry about that. Running into you I mean," Virgil said and immediately winced. Janus raised an eyebrow.
"Come sit!" Patton said as he ushered the four of them into the living room. "I'll make coffee! Or tea. Or cocoa. Which do you like, Janus?"
*
Virgil watched as Janus placed his now empty tea mug on a coaster. He couldn't help but watch him, even if it made him feel extremely creepy. He was a bit overwhelmed from the suddenness of everything, so he wasn't speaking very much. Janus didn't seem to mind as he conversed with the others.
Virgil could tell the others (and himself, if he was being honest) already adored Janus. With his smooth voice and sharp wit, it was easy to be captivated.
Patton, who was sitting in between Janus and Virgil on the couch, heard Virgil's stomach grumbled once the afternoon started to meld into evening. With all the excitement earlier in the day, Virgil had forgotten to eat lunch and hadn't thought about it until now.
After shoving a granola bar in Virgil's hands, Patton offered to pick up food from a nearby restaurant. Logan went with him, and Virgil graciously let Roman lead the conversation.
"I just prefer the more classic musicals of Broadway," Janus said with a wave of his hand as he reclined into the couch. "Many of the new musicals are too poppy for me."
"Even so, the new ones are so good!" Roman said as he leaned forward in his chair. Virgil himself leaned against the arm of the couch, waiting for a moment he felt comfortable interjecting. "Modern musicals may  not have the same charm as the classics, but that doesn't make the music or script any less enjoyable."
"Don't even get me started on the Hollywood takeover of Broadway," Janus said. "I am so tired of these musical adaptations of movies. We need to stop letting film companies take the theatres and give chances to new playwrights and original stories."
"That... you're mostly right on. But the Mean Girls musical has some bops."
Janus opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by Roman's phone ringing. By the scowl on Roman's face, Virgil knew he was going to decline, but then Roman hesitated.
"I don't mind if you take the call," Janus assured him. Roman gave him a grateful smile and answered it just before the final ring.
As Roman went to take the call in the bedroom, Virgil tried to quell the anxiety rising in him. It must've been important for Roman to have answered it at this time. Virgil hoped it wasn't an emergency. Maybe it was Remus calling him just to propose another crazy scheme of his - Roman could never ignore his brother. But it also could've been a phone call bearing bad news - Something happened to Remus, or Remy, or Emile, or something else terrible that would warrant Roman to interrupt his time with his new soulmate-
"Are you alright?" Janus asked, snapping Virgil from his spiraling thoughts. Virgil grimaced but gave him a smile anyways.
"Yeah, sorry. Just got lost in thought for a moment."
Janus looked Virgil up and down, making Virgil squirm under his gaze.
"Do I frighten you?"
"What? No! Of course not!" Virgil said. He sighed and turned more towards Janus. "I'm sorry. I just get inside my own head and freak out sometimes. You've been nothing but wonderful this whole time. I'm sor-"
"You don't have to apologize if you're anxious, Virgil," Janus said. "It's nothing to be ashamed of."
Virgil gaped for a moment. While of course the others accepted his anxiety, it took a bit of a learning curve for them to get used to it. No one had immediately told him before that they didn't mind.
"But I shouldn't be," Virgil eventually huffed, sitting up straighter and just a bit closer to Janus. "We're supposedly made for each other - I know we're going to get along so why does my brain tell me I'm going to mess it up?"
"That's what anxiety does, babe."
Virgil barked out a laugh.
"Yeah, you're right."
"So let me ask again now. Are you alright?"
Virgil thought for a moment before nodding.
"Yeah. For real this time."
Janus opened his arms, and Virgil graciously accepted.
"I'm so happy we found you," Virgil murmured into Janus' chest as Janus wrapped his arms securely around Virgil. "I had been so worried these last few days - worried that we'd never find you again, or that it'd be years-"
"You don't need to worry anymore," Janus said with a smile. "I'm right here where you need me."
The bedroom door opened, and Virgil automatically went to sit up, but Janus gently coaxed him into leaning against his side - not tightly enough to force him, just enough to show him that it's fine, and Virgil reminded himself that neither Janus or Roman would judge him.
Roman smiled when he saw the two of them, but his eyes were heavy and Janus and Virgil frowned.
"Is everything okay?" Virgil asked. "Who called?"
"Yes, everything's fine. Don't worry, my little stormcloud. It was just audition results from the one last week. I didn't make the callback."
"Oh, Roman. I'm so sorry," Virgil said. He sat away from Janus, who moved to encourage him back, but stopped once Virgil waved Roman over. Roman immediately moved to sit between them, laying his head on Virgil's shoulder as Virgil held him and Janus took his hands, running his thumbs over Roman's knuckles.
"You'll make one of them someday. You're so talented." Virgil assured him.
"It's so hard to get started," Roman sighed. "They're more likely to cast people they know, but how are they going to know me if I never get casted?"
"The people that ignore your talents aren't worth your time anyway," Janus said. "If they're more focused on relations rather than talent, that's not a production you want to be associated with."
Roman gave him a weak smile and went to sit up straight.
"Don't let me burden you both with my dilemmas this joyous night," Roman said. "Please, continue telling me about your classes, Janus."
Janus just sighed. "I just told Virgil not to be ashamed of his anxiety. You, Roman, do not need to be ashamed of being disappointed.
"I hate to bother you-"
"You're not bothering me, nor Virgil I'm sure. There's no shame in seeking comfort when you need it," Janus leaned closer to Roman. "I want you to take care of yourself. No bottling up feelings, okay?"
Roman nodded.
"Good."
Janus sat up straight.
"Also, if you'd like, I'd be happy to help you with your monologues and scenes. I myself used to do theatre work."
Roman's face lit up again. "Oh really?"
Janus nodded.
Virgil was almost as happy as Roman to hear it. While of course he and Logan and Patton helped Roman when they could, Virgil knew they weren't exactly the best scene partners to work with.
"I would love that. Is there a chance I could also get you to sing for me, my star?"
It was Janus' turn to blush, and with that Roman seemed to have gained his confidence again as he sat up to tease Janus, who snapped at him in return, but his smile showed it held no real malice.
Virgil rested his chin on Roman's shoulder as the two quipped back and forth. Logan and Patton got back home shortly after. Janus encouraged Roman to tell Logan and Patton what happened over the phone, and two of them took no time to comfort him.
Once dinner was done, Patton was insistent on making Roman's favorite red velvet cupcakes.
"You don't have to put in that trouble for me," Roman had said.
"Your smile is worth it," Patton replied. Roman had gone a deep red and couldn't muster up any further protests.
It was cramped in the kitchen. Virgil was sitting on the counter, mostly just handing utensils to who needed it, while Patton and Janus made batter. Logan had started on frosting while Patton insisted that Roman did need to help - these were for him, after all! So Roman floated from person to person, stealing hugs and kisses where he could get it.
Patton booped some batter onto Janus' nose and kissed it off, which had been too adorable to process.
Virgil watched as Roman made the rounds into Janus' arms. Janus was the only one tall enough to be eye level with Roman. Roman's expression turned from blissed to thoughtful to hesitant. Janus, ever intuitive, knew what he was thinking and leaned in to press a quick, chaste kiss to Roman's lips. Roman's smile grew wide and his cheeks grew red as he rested his forehead on Janus'
Virgil himself could feel his heart swelling with happiness. He watched as Logan and Janus were able to discuss and debate about far more things than the rest of them could understand. Janus and Roman were able to throw clever nicknames at each other, their sharp wits bouncing off the other's. Janus was able to make Patton grow blushy and giggly almost as fast as Roman, using that smooth lilt in his voice to fluster him almost immediately.
Then Janus thought back to their brief time together on the couch - when strong arms held him tightly and grounded him, letting him know that he was safe - and Virgil knew that they were finally complete.

💬 Favourite quote?
I have a lot and I don’t care about rules so I’m gonna list a few
First up is Remus’ “Everybody sins, everybody dies” line in Forbidden Fruit. No matter where the fuck I am when listening to it, I always do the moves he does. Top notch.
After that is another Remus quote (surprise) “uH OH!! Looks like the cat is out of the ball bag!! Dispite his best efforts, Virgil could never stop being the bAD GUY—” followed closely by him saying “rECorD SCrAtch?!?!” but specifically this quote I adore. It sounds like he doesn’t come up to see them very often so all this drama is like a soap opera to him.
I can’t decide on my third favorite quote so here’s just a list of all of the ones that come in third
“Singing to myself, cuz I’m not un-comfortable at all!!”
“Won hearts!” *slowly covers mouth*
“Hey Patton, eyeshadow buddies” “We arE BUDDIES”
*Roman doing that dramatic hand thing* “mistakes”
“Yeah,,, also me doh!!”
“You’re the boss, hoss.”
“Well, I don’t know what to tell except that there’s nO WINNING ON CHRISTMAS!!!”

Patton: I've already sent good vibes your way… they’re coming. There’s nothing you can do to stop them. Virgil: This is the most threatening way I’ve ever been cheered up.
Virgil: Name a more iconic duo than my crippling fear of abandonment and my paranoia. I'll wait. Patton’s Card: FAM - ILY Virgil, tearing up: Okay.
Logan: I actually have a black belt. Roman: In what, karate? Logan: No, from Gucci.
Remus: Am I going too far? Janus: No, no, no. You went too far about seven hours ago. Now you're going to prison.
Patton, motioning to a Halloween display: All these ghosts! All these ghosts! I still can’t find a boo. Logan: Babe, I’m right here.
Remus: You think I really give a fuck? I can’t even read.
Virgil: Okay okay stop asking me if I'm straight, gay, bi, whatever. I identify as a FUCKING THREAT. Roman, from across the room: You tell ‘em, babe!
Roman: You can de-escalate any situation by simply saying, 'Are we about to kiss?' Remus: Doesn't work for getting out of speeding tickets, by the way.

Here’s that Kid Ghost AU again.

Relationships: Platonic Intruality & Creativitwins, background platonic DLAMPR
Summery: Roman is a child ghost and Remus’s best friend. Logan doesn’t believe in ghosts and it turns into a challenge to prove it.
Warnings: Brief gross statements from Remus, but overall fairly tame and fluffy. One mention of animal abuse (that didn’t actually happen.)
-
Remus marched into school confident, and even slightly excited. He marched out of the school grounds, glaring at the ground and grumbling to himself.
“Ghosts aren’t real.” Logan had said, his round, rosy face full of confidence, chin poised like a stuck-up prince or something. Which really was supposed to be a Roman thing.
Remus, who had been showcasing the art Roman had drawn for him, pouted. “Yes they are!”
“Well then prove it.” Logan demanded, crossing his arms behind his back. He thought it made him look smart. Really it just made him jut his chest out more. “If you can show me tangible evidence of ghosts, I’ll con-confe-confer-uh ....I’ll believe you.”
“Well- well fine!”
“Oooo, are you guys going ghost hunting?” Janus had asked, smiling in a way that made Remus want to think he was just saying that to get someone riled up. So obviously, it did.
Patton gasped, eyes big and wide, “You’re not going to hurt the ghosts, right? They have feelings too!”
Logan, to his credit, did not immediately tell Patton ghosts did not exist. “Of course we wouldn’t hurt them. If we did find evidence of ghost activity we would study them in their natural habitat and record our findings. That’s what scientists do.” He adjusted his glasses and his shirt’s collar. “Also they don’t exist.”
“Yes, they do!” Remus shrieked and did immediately go to pull Logan’s hair.
Virgil, who had been watching the interaction from a small distance sighed. Because this meant it was going to be a long day. Roman, who was busy being a ghost back home, had no clue what havoc Remus was bringing home to him. Which also meant a long day was approaching.
Remus was a little lost as to when this “ghost hunting” plan became a slumber party. Logan had arrived first. Yet, despite the fact that Roman literally opened the door for him, it was not proof apparently. Roman just shrugged when Remus tried to glare him into being visible to the other boy.
Logan set up a collection of toys in the living room, explaining as he did so. Logan called it a spirit box and an emp reader. Roman was pretty sure it was just an old radio and a thermostat. Remus was absolutely certain they were from a playset like the mini kitchen his cousin had.
Patton and Janus showed up together. Janus had a stuffed snake curled around his neck and on top of his head, covering half of his face, and Patton had a stuffed cat with its arms tied around his neck turning the toy into a cape. Patton was holding two sleeping bags and Janus had one.
Remus tilted his head. “What’s the second cocoon for Patterpillar?”
“The ghost! I don’t want him to be left out!”
Roman cooed and looked at Remus “That’s so cute! He got me a sleeping bag! Which one’s mine?”
“Can you even use it?” Remus asked.
Roman shrugged.
Patton meanwhile, yelled into the air. “The blue one is mine! It has Stitch on it. You can have the red one, Mr. Ghost! It’s got Minnie and Micky Mouse on it!”
“You don’t have to yell, he’s right there,” Remus said, gesturing at Roman.
Janus just laughed, dumping his stuff on Patton, and wandered off to give himself a tour of the house.
Virgil arrived last, hands in his pockets as he stood in the threshold. “Can I come in?”
“Of course Grump-a Vamps!” Remus announced loudly.
Both Logan and Virgil protested he was “not a vampire.” Although Logan yelled it, Virgil sighed it.
“You’re next on my ‘convince Logan’ list,” Remus said, grinning.
Virgil spared a glance at Roman, who was glaring at him from next to where Patton and Logan were setting up a blanket fort, and then at Remus. “Good luck.”
After a dinner of pizza, Logan, adjusting his pajama’s hoodie, announced, “I think we can begin our ‘Ghost hunt’ now.”
“I found one! Right behind you!” Remus announced, pointing at Roman.
Logan shrieked and turned to look next to him where Remus was pointing, clutching his emp reader/ thermostat/ toy. “OH, don’t do that!” Logan cried, turning his glare towards Remus. Roman went wide-eyed and glared at Remus as well.
“Damn, he almost believed me.”
“I think his screeching scared me more than I scared him,” Roman whined “Are we sure we want him to be able to see me?”
Logan scoffed. “Let’s get started, hopefully, we’ll find something before bedtime."
Logan collected his other toy/ radio/ spirit box and turned to Remus. "So, where is your ghost's favorite spot?"
"Right next to the TV and the window in the living room." Remus said, drowning out Roman's answer of not having a favorite spot. Not that anyone but Remus heard it anyway.
Remus grinned at Roman and motioned for the group to follow him.
"If we get killed by an angry ghost do you think we would become ghosts too?" Janus asked with a hum. Patton smacked him in the arm.
Logan rolled his eyes. "Remus lives here. If the hyp-hypothe- If the ghost was dangerous we would know."
Virgil made a skeptical hum. Smirking, he muttered, "Says the kid who screamed over him being next to him."
Roman laughed and floated above Remus's head. "Honestly if anyone here is dangerous I think it’s you, Remus.”
"Actually the ghost is super dangerous." Remus said, grinning directly at Roman. "He turned my cat into a hat. Guts and all!"
Patton gasped in horror. Janus laughed. Which earned Janus another shove.
Roman shook his head "I hate you. You're terrible."
"Thank you!"
When they reached the living room, Remus gestured to Roman's favorite spot to stand around in. Roman rolled his eyes. "Still not my favorite spot."
Logan checked it over with the emp reader, seemingly satisfied with the answer. Then set up his spirit box right next to the spot, and turned it on. "Ok… If you are here, please use this to try and communicate with us."
"Yeah! I'm gonna loose if you don't use the dumb box" Remus yelled to the air, pretending he didn't see Roman glaring at him.
"Did this turn into a bet when I wasn’t looking?” Roman grumbled.
Remus shrugged “I have no idea. But I already owe him an ice cream sandwich.”
“Ugh, fine." Roman wandered over to the spirit box and crouched in front of it. "What do I do?"
Remus shrugged.
"Ask him." Roman sighed, waving an intangible hand through Logan’s head. Logan shivered when he did so.
"Ugh fine. What's Roman supposed to do to make it work? Sing Bloody Mary and summon his mom?"
"Hey!" Roman gasped, placing a hand on his chest.
"Uh…." Logan glanced at the box. "I always guessed it was sorta like possessing it or something."
"Ew." Roman grumbled and placed a hand through the box, earning them a crackle over the static of the box.
"Did you hear that?" Patton asked, hugging Virgil's arm.
"It was just a crackle." Logan said, shaking his head.
"Oh this should be funny." Roman grinned and for a moment, disappeared. Instead, the box spoke between crackles of static. "Logan…"
Logan shrieked at the mention of his name through the box.
"Don't… tell the group...to split up… Horror movie tips… 101."
Remus cackled as Roman reappeared from the box. Virgil snorted. Looking at the box with wide eyes, Logan seemed frozen for a moment. He looked up and glanced around at everyone else.
Patton gave the box a disapproving look, which made Roman shrink, grumbling to himself that at least Remus found it funny.
"You...guys heard that, right?" Logan asked.
Janus hummed, grinning lightly. "Good advice. We don't have Scooby-Doo. It wouldn't work right without him."
Logan turned to the box, bouncing in place, "Can you do it again?"
Roman shook his head. "Made me dizzy, I get why ghosts don't do that often."
"He said it made him dizzy." Remus parroted, shrugging.
He adjusted his glasses with a frown. "Ok…" Logan fumbled to get out a notebook from his bag and scribbled a note inside. "Scientifically recorded. I do want another test though.” Logan glanced around the building. “Uh..... Can he move something?"
A plastic cup fell in the kitchen with a clatter. Logan and Janus both jumped, clinging to Virgil. Logan laughed awkwardly and pushed himself away.
"Sorry! I wanted some juice." Patton called, tilting his head out from the kitchen.
Roman laughed and shook his head. "Your friends are jumpy. You sure you want to prove ghosts are real?"
"Yesss" Remus pleaded "Please show them something undeniable. Please!"
Roman made a face, brows furrowed, "I don't know if I can. I haven't been able to prove anything to your parents."
"Just try. And if not then we have at least scared Logan out of his pants!"
"Hey! ….I'm not even wearing pants. It's a onesie."
Roman sighed and floated over to the table and Remus directed the group to follow him. Roman hummed softly for a moment, and picked up a crayon. His form flickered and the crayon fell to the ground.
Logan however, was transfixed on the fallen crayon. "Okay proof enough for me. Congra-congre-congrata- er, you win, Remus."
Remus punched a fist in the air with a whoop. "Win for team Ghost! Ha!"
"I never doubted you for a moment," Janus drawled, earning himself a glare from Virgil.
Logan folded his arms behind his back and rolled his eyes.
"Did you hear that Ro- uh…. Where'd Roman go?" Remus frowned at the spot Roman had last hovered in, and then looked around the room. "Roman?"
His friends, to their credit, looked around as well, despite not being able to see the ghost either way.
Remus frowned at the lack of response and glanced at the group of his more alive friends (and Virgil).
"Maybe he went to get something?" Patton suggested, juice in hand.
Remus frowned and shook his head. "I… He probably used too much energy with the box." Remus ran to the stairwell and called again "Roman?!"
"Do you want to try and find him?" Virgil asked, voice surprisingly soft.
Remus nodded. The group of them searched the house, Remus, Janus and Patton searching one half of the house and Virgil and Logan in the other.
They had to give up after Remus's mom told them it was bedtime. The sky well past dark, wind howling outside the window. They settled in a small group on Remus's bedroom floor. The trees swaying and creaking outside.
Dispite the room being filled with the hushed whispers of children, Patton begin to snore almost immediately. Soon, it seemed everyone was soon asleep except Remus. The door creaked slowly open. Logan sat up abruptly, staring wide-eyed at the door. Remus wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep it seemed. Remus sat up as well, finding a very small looking Roman. He barely even glowed. Remus smiled anyway.
Logan looked at Remus. "Was that him?"
"Yeah."
Roman floated over next to Remus and gave him a misty feeling hug. Like a bubble of heavy fog sitting on your shoulder.
"Is he okay?" Logan whispered, getting out of his sleeping bag and crawling over to Remus.
Roman nodded and Remus copied the motion.
Logan leaned back. "That's good. Sorry if I pressured you into doing something you didn't want to…"
Roman tilted his head and smiled. "Don't worry about it, Science Lo-g." Remus parroted him.
A wood creaked ominously overhead, making Logan yelp. Virgil shot right up, hitting Janus in the face. Janus gasped and sat up as well, glaring at Virgil.
"What was that for?"
"Why are you all uppppp," Patton groggily whined.
Remus giggled. "Roman's back and Logan’s a big scaredy-cat."
Logan hugged himself, frowning. "No I'm not."
"Boo!" Janus exclaimed, abruptly leaning forward towards Logan. Logan shrieked and shoved Janus away. Janus cackled.
"Jan that was rude," Patton said, shoving his brother's arm. Janus just rolled his eyes with a giggle.
"You Ok L?" Virgil asked, tilting his head.
Logan nodded. "Uh….yeah…"
Remus shook his head "You're all dorks. I remember why Ghosts are better than People now. Ghosts are cool."
Roman brightened, giggling. Remus's alive (really, does Virgil count?) friends giggled too.
“We’re cool... and dorky.” Janus said, sticking his tongue out at Remus. “About half and half.”
Remus giggled, “Eh, the ghost is dorky too, so I think it’s even.”
The group dissolved into further giggles, the following quiet eased with a gentle air of happiness.
The winds outsides still billowed ominously. The wood groaning.
Logan glanced around the old house, and took in a big breath. "Can I… sleep in the middle?"
"Of course!" Patton said, despite being closer to the outside of the group.
Janus shrugged and Virgil nodded. Logan crawled in between Virgil and Janus's spots, right in the middle and let out a heavy sigh.
A quiet that fell over the group. "You were really scared, huh?" Remus whispered, leaning over Virgil. Virgil grunted at being squished.
Logan looked somewhat sheepish and rubbed his eyes. "...Uh… A little. But not of Roman…. Mostly." Logan shrugged.
Virgil shifted, opening one eye. "Wanna hug? Hugs usually help me."
Logan was quiet for a moment. "Yes please."
Remus immediately glued himself to Logan’s side, and Virgil followed soon after. Logan giggled, and after a moment, Janus and Patton joined the cuddle pile.
Roman looking somewhat curious, floated over to Logan and placed a hand on his shoulder. Logan glanced at the spot. "What's that?"
"Roman" Remus replied.
Logan let out a soft "Oh."
"Unless he screams, I'm gonna hug him too now." Roman informed Remus. His misty heavy-airiness fell over the group hug, and only solidified the sleepy air.
Logan smiled. "Remind me to put this in the notebook." He muttered.
Remus laughed. "Go to sleep, ghost hunter."
A round of good nights circled the room and it wasn't long until Patton was snoring next to the wheeze of the wind in the trees outside and the creak of the happily haunted house.

S/O Tag Videos For The YouTube Trope Thing
Ok so, ships: Dukexiety, Roceit, Logicality, Remile (I'm gonna do bullet fics for each ships boyfriend tag)
----------------------------------------------
Dukexiety:
"Ok Remus what's my favorite food"
"Meat"
"That's not even-"
"( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"
"Remus are you trying to get us dmeonatized!"
This happens every two seconds
Virgil debates breaking up with him mid-challenge
Remus gives him a big ol' pouty face when he jokes about it
They never actually get to answering the questions properly because they're both to busy arguing
They end up making out by the end of the video
Roceit:
Roman remembers e v e r y t h i n g from what color tie Janus wore on each date to the exact time of their first kiss, down to the second
Janus gets all doey-eyed and embarrassing
Roman won't let Janus finish the questions before he answers
Janus wont let Roman finish because he just keeps giving him kisses
They're such a pda couple it's worse than Virgil's channel
You can literally tell how much the want to make out with each other through the screen
Logcality:
Logan remembers the exact times of everything theyve ever done and when he got the answer to the question
Patton insisted on filming like a vlog so he'll be mid-answer and making cookies and almost set his hand directly on the stove
The challenge gets forgotten pretty quickly because Patton keeps almost getting injured
They finally remember theres a recording when Logan's fawning over Patton because he almost got hurt
And Logan suddenly just paused and shrinks away and is like scrunching his face up
And then Patton's worrying about him like "oh what happened? Was it something I did? Are you ok?"
And Logan just mumbles "baby"
And then they hear the laptop notifications going I n s a n e
And they look over at the live stream camera
And its s t i l l o n
----------------------------------------------
Remile:
This ones actually kinda sad
Emile can remember what happens on big dates and important stuff like anniversaries
But of course he doesnt have as good of a memory as he should
So some things tend to slip out because he wasnt fronting when he heard them or he wasnt the alter that went on the date so he doesnt remember as much about it
And he starts getting all upset because "oh I barely remember that nice restraunt you took me to I'm such an awful boyfriend"
And Remy just
Looks at him
Moves his sunglasses down a little
"Babes, light of my life, sun to my moon, what the f*** are you talking about"
'n they kiss and they're in love and being all cutesy because they deserve it

honey, you’re familiar (like my mirror)
see other chapters, notes, and warnings here!
chapter five: obligate mutualism
obligate mutualism: a type of mutualism in which the species involved are in close proximity and interdependent with one another in a way that one cannot survive without the other.
REMY
Emile appears in Nice, squealing and jumping up and down.
“Hey!” Remy says warmly, hugging him; Emile’s joy is so infectious that Remy can feel Emile’s smile stretching across his own face. “What’s got you so happy?”
“They let him off!” Emile says exuberantly. “Rem, they let Remus off! Jay proved that they don’t have anything on him so Remus is free to go!”
“Oh my God, that’s amazing!” Remy says, then, “wait, what was Remus under arrest for?”
“Oh, murder,” Emile says, waving that off, “but Jay proved that Remus was just joking when he was threatening him, so Remus got off! Oh my goodness, he’s out! He can finish his latest book! He can stay with Roman! Yay!”
“Yay,” Remy cheers weakly, wondering what the hell kind of cluster his boyfriend has birthed.
ROMAN
Roman drops a substantial amount of money on champagne on their drive home.
Remus rolls his eyes, but he’s grinning a little bit, so Roman assumes that he’s happy about it. Or maybe he’s plotting how to ruin Roman’s possessions with champagne. One of the two.
Roman opens the door, balancing the champagne bottles in his arms, feeling a lot like he’s forgotten something. He drops his keys into the bowl on the entry table.
“Hey, Roman! Ooh, champagne—on a Tuesday? What, did you land a role with Guillermo del Toro?”
“God, I wish,” Roman says wistfully, then, oh shit I forgot to tell Sasha.
Sasha blinks a couple times before she stands up.
“Um, hey, sweetie,” she says. “Who’s your friend?”
Remus snorts loudly at the fake endearment.
“Um, Sasha,” Roman says, shutting the door behind him. “This is my twin brother, Remus.”
Sasha gawks at Remus. “I didn’t know you had a brother!”
Remus socks him in the shoulder so hard that Roman nearly drops the heavy glass champagne bottle. “You bitch, you said you’d tell her!”
“I forgot?” Roman says weakly.
“I have no idea how you put up with him,” Remus tells Sasha. “Is the convenience of a beard worth hearing him sing Disney in the shower?”
Sasha, looking a little startled that Remus knows the full truth of the deal Roman and her made, rebuts with, “
“Where have you been before this, anyway?” Sasha says.
“Oh, jail,” Remus says brightly.
“Oh, okay,” Sasha says, and, with a level of casualness that frankly stuns Roman, moves on to, “So, I’ve had a gripe with one of your books for forever.”
“Oh?”
“I didn’t know you read his books,” Roman says, mystified.
“Yeah, I started back when I was doing that slasher pic a year and a half ago, you remember that?” Sasha says. “Helped me pick up on the internal life of a stalking victim. Anyways, the first book I read of yours—”
“Behind the Bushes, I’m guessing,” Remus says.
“Yeah!” Sasha says. “I super love that you subverted the expectations and the victim was the one that slaughtered the stalker, but I do think you could have carried through a threat she was considering through the book.”
“Which threat is that?” Remus says. “I write a lot of threats.”
“She should have castrated him,” Sasha says. “Duh.”
Remus looks at Sasha how an inventor might lovingly look at a device that finally works.
Roman groans, because he should have expected this outcome, and feared it.
“Oh, no,” Roman says. “You’re going to be friends.”
Sasha and Remus give him identical grins full of mischief.
LOGAN
Virgil appears sitting on the counter. Logan isn’t even fazed by the surprise of seeing him, although his heart rate does pick up a little.
Over the past few days, this is the way it’s been, between them; Logan suddenly finding himself looking over Virgil’s shoulder at his dinner when he’d meant to be looking at data charts, Virgil finding himself with handfuls of flowers in the face of the barren landscape of the Antarctic.
Even when he isn’t actively visiting, Logan still feels that pull, his mind turning to Virgil at the oddest times of day. He tastes coffee when he should be drinking tea. He finds himself idly doodling South African native flora during dinner. He thinks Virgil might like this when he tries to read a novel during his relaxation times and wonders how best to explain the minutiae of his science to another scientist.
“Hey, Logan,” Virgil says, and Logan feels that thrill in his stomach again.
“Hello, Virgil,” he says, after making a show of turning on his Bluetooth, for the benefit of the other scientists in the lab. “How have you been today?”
“Pretty okay,” Virgil says. “My mom said she was gonna see if she could find any of the other sensates down here that my grandma knew, so I might be able to hear more about her cluster.”
“Excellent!” Logan says. “Be sure to ask if they’re connected to the Archipelago?”
“You and that Neolithic Google,” Virgil says with a lopsided smile. “But, yeah. I’m being careful about it; I know not every sensate’s a great person to connect to. Ergo mom as a mediary.”
“A wise plan,” Logan says. “It does seem like a disadvantage that all that’s needed for a lifetime of connection is a singular instance of eye contact.”
“Maybe I should invest in a really good pair of blocking glasses,” Virgil teases, and he reaches over. Logan hadn’t even noticed they’d been slipping down the bridge of his nose.
Virgil gently nudges Logan’s glasses back into place, his finger resting on Logan’s nose, and Logan’s mouth goes abruptly dry.
This might be the first time one of us has touched the other.
Logan tries to swallow, coughs a little bit, and says, “It could potentially be a wise investment, yes. I’d—um. I’d have to do more research into what exactly would suffice to block eye contact.”
“Yeah,” Virgil rasps, and he clears his throat, too. “Yeah, that’s probably, uh. That’s probably a good thing to ask Emile about.”
“Yeah,” Logan says, and he fruitlessly tries to refocus his attention on his research. He’s much too aware of Virgil’s eyes on him.
JANUS
Janus turns the phone over and over in his hands.
One last job, two more jobs, three more jobs…
He remembers getting arrested for the first time. He remembers the lawyer who got Janus out of it, pro bono, and managed to keep it off his record by the skin of his teeth.
He thinks about representing Remus in the courtroom; he thinks about the state of his accounts; he thinks about how the threat of jail that Remus would have faced was what spooked him into pursuing a law degree in the first place.
He thinks about Remus and Roman, side-by-side in the courtroom; he thinks about Roman declaring that he doesn’t care if Remus killed him or not.
Roman is an idiot. An idealistic, loyal, altruistic idiot.
Janus is many things. He is not an idiot.
Key, scowling, sits across from him at the restaurant. Sriracha aioli, fried cod. Janus has been here a thousand times before.
He proffers the little box; Key takes it.
“This is my last job,” Janus says.
Key snorts. “I’ve heard that before.”
Janus hands him the burner phone, too.
“Oh shit,” Key says. “For real?”
“For real,” Janus reaffirms.
“Shit,” Key mutters, sitting back against the booth. They stay quiet. A waitress drops off their meal. They stay quiet for a bit longer.
“Don’t suppose I can lure you back with money,” Key tries to joke.
“No,” Janus says.
Key heaves a sigh. “All right. Well.”
He moves for his wallet, and Janus shakes his head.
“I’ve got lunch,” he says. “I can appreciate that I’m leaving you in the lurch for a computer guy.”
Key snorts and shakes his head disbelievingly. “Yeah. Somethin’ like that.”
Janus chews the inside of his lip. “If you ever need a lawyer…”
“Yeah,” Key says. He stands. “Yeah.”
Key leaves. Janus stays.
He’s been here a thousand times before. And yet.
PATTON
There’s a hint of spice in his mouth, and Patton rolls over in his bed to see Janus.
“I keep showing up when I should be sleeping, I think,” Patton muses, before he reaches out and takes one of the chips that Janus is neglecting.
Janus snorts. “Roman was stealing those the last time I was here. Perhaps you all keep showing up to eat my food.”
Patton smiles, dipping the chip in the sauce. “Maybe,” he says.
Janus exhales loudly, before he says, “I have a brother too.”
“Oh?” Patton asks, intrigued, and for a moment they’re in Patton’s bed, Patton lying down with his head propped up on his arm, Janus sitting uncomfortably at the corner.
“Unlike Remus, mine did it. Does it,” Janus amends.
Patton frowns. “That’s tough.”
“I did too, until,” Janus checks his watch. “Three minutes ago.”
Patton’s eyebrows lift in surprise, but that’s the only sign he shows.
“It’s the reason I became a lawyer,” Janus says.
“Oh,” Patton says because that—that clicks. He doesn’t know Janus very well—he will, surely, but he doesn’t yet—but taking on the good-quality job of lawyer for self-protective reasons makes a lot of sense. Janus kind of seems like the type of person to not really want to rely on other people.
“So, I don’t,” Janus says, and he sighs again. “I’ve been chasing down just one more job for years and years, and now…”
“Now, you’re done, and you don’t really know what to do with yourself?” Patton asks sympathetically.
Janus nods and he drinks some of his Ribena. The fizz of blackcurrant condensation pops in Patton’s mouth.
“Can I offer some advice?” Patton says. “You can do whatever you want with it.”
Janus scoffs a little, but he gestures for Patton to go ahead.
Patton takes another chip. “There are a lot of other people who need a lawyer’s help to stay out of jail. Not just sets of brothers.”
He dips the chip, takes a bite, and is back in bed right as a thoughtful look dawns on Janus’s face.
REMUS
Roman’s fake girlfriend is delightful.
They spend almost the entirety of dinner talking about their favorite horror movies—Sasha is quite the aspiring scream queen in her career, so it makes sense that she’s studied the greats—to a point where Roman puts his hands over his ears and went “I can’t hear you, lalalalalalaLALALALALALALA—”
Truly excellent. Especially when Roman had screeched at the top of his lungs when Sasha had gone into an in-depth side tangent about the verity of the special effects of slitting throats in movies.
And now—
“Ooh, that was good!” Remus says eagerly, pointing at the Sasha in the little screen as she gets stabbed.
“Right?!” Sasha says, and they ooh! in unison as the movie gets increasingly bloodier.
“I hate you both,” Roman grouches from where he’s slouched between them, one hand covering his eyes.
Sasha ruffles his hair. “Go ahead and break up with me, then, I’m sure the press will get us both booked like crazy.”
Roman grumbles to himself, and Remus grins at Sasha over Roman’s head.
“If any of my shit gets adapted into movies, I’m absolutely gonna make sure you get cast into a leading role.”
Sasha grins back. “You’re the best fake brother-in-law I could ask for.”
Sasha is flopped out on the couch, asleep, as the credits of the movie roll in the background.
“Where is your nearest sharpie,” Remus asks, and Roman rolls his eyes, pulling Remus to his feet.
“Leave her alone, Freak-a Kahlo. I’ve got a spot set up for you to sleep.”
“But,” Remus whines, images of lewd drawings dancing in his head, but he allows Roman to pull him away anyway.
Roman has got a little cot set up for him in his room; it’s like they’re ten again, on a trip to see their abuela, except Remus can’t tackle him and wrestle him to the ground for the honor of sleeping on the bed.
Well, he could, but considering Roman posted Remus’s bail, he figures that roman could be allowed to sleep in his own bed.
All the same, it does give Remus a strange sense of deja vu of their (admittedly rare) family vacations; Roman brushes his teeth and does his extensive skincare routine in the bathroom first, then he cajoles Remus into handling his hygiene, please, they’re living together in the same room, eating soap didn’t exactly work to make Remus smell like a spring rose. To which Remus would usually rebut good, he doesn’t want to smell like a spring rose, he wants to smell like sewage, to which Roman goes ugh, how are we twins, how did two people so catastrophically different come out of the same womb, at the same time, to which Remus says it’s payback for stealing my dick in utero, to which Roman says that doesn’t even make any sense, it’s not like I have two, to which Remus says—
It’s a whole familiar argument, anyway. But Remus does at least dunk his head into Roman’s bathtub to get his hair sopping wet and swish around some mouthwash.
They’re both tucked into their blankets, and Remus is staring at the ceiling, wondering at the best ways to ruin Roman’s fancy linens. He thinks Roman’s fallen asleep until his voice pipes up.
“I’m glad you’re not rotting in jail.”
Remus ugly-snorts. “Yeah, I guess I am too.”
“Thanks to our weird psychic lawyer, anyway.”
“And your fuck-off big actor money,” Remus reminds him, rolling over to face him. The room is so dark that he can barely see the outline of Roman’s face.
“Yeah, honestly, bribing the cops was going to be my next plan if you didn’t show up,” Roman says sleepily.
Remus grins at Roman in the dark. “I’ve been a fantastic influence on you.”
“Incorrect,” Roman grumbles.
“You’ll be watching slashers with Sasha and me in no time.”
“Ugh, I hope not,” Roman says.
“They’re inspiring!”
“Yeah, to you, Mr. Big Horror Novelist.”
“You know what else is big—”
“Ew! Ew ew ew, I know I set it up, but ew. No.”
“...This—”
“Remus, I’m kicking you out, I swear to God.”
“No, you’re not,” Remus sing-songs, “You were gonna bribe the cops, I’m holding this over your head forever.”
“I didn’t actually bribe the cops.”
“Yeah, but you were gonna,” Remus says. “Funnily enough, that seemed like the biggest case the cops had against me, too. That I was gonna.”
“I know you’re a horror writer, but I hope you don’t write about Miguel,” Roman says. “Might look a bit too If I Did It to the public.”
“Course not,” Remus says, his eyes slipping shut.
“Good.”
“I’m going to be writing a book about murdering the cops.”
“Oh, much better,” Roman sighs.
VIRGIL
Virgil spits out his toothpaste into the sink and looks up into the mirror to see Logan in his reflection, his glasses off, a toothbrush in hand.
“Fancy meeting you here,” Virgil quips.
The Logan in his reflection smiles at him awkwardly around his toothbrush, blushes, then redirects his attention to finishing off brushing his teeth as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Virgil uses that time to wash his face; Logan follows not long after. Virgil gets a whiff of the facewash Logan is using; it smells rather nice, something floral.
They do their respective routines in companionable quiet; Logan, waking up for the day, and Virgil, about to go to sleep.
“What’s on your agenda for the day?” Virgil asks, moisturizing his face.
“Research, research, and more research,” Logan says dryly, rubbing sunscreen onto his face. Their hands move in unison; moving in small circles on each cheek, up to the forehead, down the nose, the chin, down the neck. Mirror images, if not for their distinct physical differences.
“Probably should’ve guessed that,” Virgil says, rubbing the excess moisturizer into his forearms.
“Oh, you missed—”
And suddenly, Logan is not just in his mirror, but in his bathroom, reaching out a hand to smooth some more moisturizer into his skin.
“Right here,” Logan says softly, his fingers gentle on Virgil’s cheekbone. Virgil barely even breathes as Logan smooths away the smear of moisturizer.
“There,” Logan murmurs, but he’s still cradling Virgil’s face.
“Thanks,” Virgil rasps.
Logan smiles at him, just a little. “You missed right there when we first met, too.”
“Did I really?” Virgil asks. He can barely focus on anything else except the cool smoothness of Logan’s hand.
“Mhm,” Logan says. “There I was, thinking I was going crazy, and there was this African man planting a jacaranda tree into the tile, with a smear of sunscreen on his face…”
“And I had this note-taking Pole talking to me about preferring if I were a hallucination,” Virgil says. “Telling me you’d ignore me if you saw me again.”
“And then I immediately started questioning you,” Logan says, smiling. “And…”
He trails off. His hand is still on Virgil’s face. Virgil is standing so stock-still he could probably turn into a scarecrow, if only for the virtue of keeping Logan’s hand on him.
“And then I kept feeling this pull,” Logan continues quietly, looking Virgil in the eyes. He isn’t wearing his glasses; there is nothing between Virgil and those bright blue, captivating eyes. “This pull to come to you.”
“Me too,” Virgil says softly.
Logan licks his lips. He says, softly, “I do wonder why it is us, that keep feeling this pull to each other.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes,” Logan affirms quietly. “Maybe there’s that call to those similar that we theorized about, that day. Maybe that’s what fuels this connection. Whenever I learned something new, I flashed to you. Always to you. I’m not sure if we’ll ever find out why. Perhaps there’s a level of…”
A level of what, Virgil doesn’t know, because he leans in and kisses Logan.
Logan freezes, and, with anyone else, Virgil would panic and pull back, thinking he’d been presumptuous, but he abruptly feels a thrill in his stomach and a yes in hid mind that may as well be in Logan’s voice, and Virgil’s shoulders relax at the presence of it, of that pull between them finally being eased.
Virgil wraps his arms around Logan’s waist, and Logan’s arms twine around Virgil’s neck, and they kiss, continents and oceans apart, able to taste the minty toothpaste on each other’s breath.

The record player was still in the kitchen, surrounded by puzzle pieces. Patton switched it on and watched the vinyl spin in a daze. He missed Roman's boastful chatter, missed Logan's even keel. Maybe he should just give up. They clearly didn't want him around, and at a certain point, maybe it was selfish to keep badgering them.
God, he was a mess. Virgil had been too tactful to say anything during last night's Ghost Adventures marathon, but he had kicked his feet up in Patton's lap, and that was telling. It wasn't the reassuring full-body contact he longed for, but Virgil had never been big on touch. He couldn't be what Patton needed, and that was fair. It wasn't Virgil's job to take care of Patton. It was no one's job.
Janus' voice sounded unbidden in his head, reminding him in a distinctly annoyed tone, ' It's your job.'
So Patton picked himself up off the kitchen island and opened the fridge. He liked the work of cooking and cleaning. The domesticity was reassuring and sweet and safe. He cooked and cleaned because he loved. He loved Logan, he loved Roman, he loved Virgil. He wanted to see them safe and fed and contented, free to fulfill their functions because Patton fulfilled his.
As he cracked eggs into a bowl, he wondered if he loved Janus. He probably did. How could he help it?
Janus' smile was a rare thing, and that much sweeter for it. And he was so clever, so self-assured, so determined to help. This whole time, that was what was driving him. He wanted to help Thomas the only way he could, and now he was helping Patton. Because… Because he was just good. Even if he, like Virgil before him, kept that light hidden behind walls of sarcasm and bitterness. Janus was good. And Patton loved him.
He had forgotten to turn on the stove. Patton smiled at himself, because what else could he do, and turned on the stove. As he stood there, anxiously eyeing his half-finished omelette, his fingers found their way to the friendship bracelets around his right wrist. He had two there, Logan's and Roman's. They were both made of soft embroidery floss. Roman's had a little charm, a small silver 'R' that sometimes caught the light and made Patton smile when he noticed it.
He and Janus should have friendship bracelets. It could go on his left wrist next to Virgil's. Virgil wouldn't be happy about it, but… But Patton wanted it. He wanted Janus to feel accepted and loved. And there was no way to do that and spare Virgil's feelings. There was just no winning and Patton wanted, wanted, wanted more than he'd ever wanted anything.. Would it really be so bad to indulge this?
After breakfast, Patton relocated to the living room and asked the mindscape's halls for Janus. Janus did not appear, but the fog of the subconscious at the edges of the walls solidified into a hallway. Patton got to his feet and started to walk. He had never really ventured into the space that Roman referred to as 'the Dark Side,' but there was really nothing foreboding about it. The halls were still well-lit, the carpet still plush beneath his feet.
Eventually, the hall opened up to a cozy little alcove. Janus was huddled up against the wall, staring into the depths of a pure black coffee mug. He flinched when he noticed Patton, then smiled.
It was a slow, unfurling thing: first sheepish, then courteous, and finally, genuine. It lit a fire in Patton's chest, made him feel like he was glowing.
"Patton." Janus tipped his hat, peering out coquettishly from under its brim.
"Sorry," said Patton, "am I interrupting?"
"Oh, yes," said Janus, getting to his feet, "I need to have my coffee in utter silence of the caffeine doesn't take."
He sounded a little hoarse. Patton felt himself cross his arms and draw back to examine Janus, but couldn't stop it from happening. His scales looked the same as ever, more yellow than green under the light, but both eyes were glassy in a way that indicated lack of sleep. He looked tired, Patton decided, but not sick.
"Did I button my shirt wrong?" Janus asked, not actually looking down to check. He kept his eyes on Patton.
"Is there something on your mind?" Patton asked.
Janus countered this question with another question, which Patton supposed was fair: "Did you come down here just for that?"
"Well, actually…" Patton tugged at the tight, precise braid of Logan's friendship bracelet. Why was this so hard? "I thought we could-- If you wanted to--" His nerves were taking over and he was helpless to stop them, couldn't control the way his voice trembled. He started over. "So, no pressure, obviously, but I just thought it might be nice if we, you know, made friendship bracelets together." Patton held up his forearms so Janus could see. "If you want."
Tears were forming in Janus' human eye; his chest hitched with uneven breaths. Patton was already raising his arms to offer a hug when Janus turned away and started to cough. Oh.
The fit, though it sounded terrible, ended quickly. Janus straightened, drawing a yellow handkerchief back into his sleeve like a magician. "What," he said, pretending to look at his fingernails, "are the odds of you believing that was nothing?"
"It didn't sound like nothing," Patton said.
Janus sighed and leaned back against the wall, pressing his fingertips to his forehead. "Look, I didn't want to say anything, but I think that our dear benevolent prince might be a little angrier than he let on."
"You think Roman's doing this to you?" That didn't sound like him. He could be stubborn, sure, maybe even bull-headed, but it really wasn't like him to make someone sick. At least, not on purpose.
"It's not Remus," Janus said, crossing his arms. "There's nothing else wrong with me."
"It's just a cough?"
"Just a cough."
Patton tapped his fingers against his leg, thinking. "Roman's not really talking to me at the moment--"
"Typical," Janus muttered.
Not wanting to fight, Patton let this go. "But I'll see if I can… Well, I'll see what I can do."
Janus nodded, then seemed to remember something. His jaw worked for a second, his eyes darting everywhere except Patton's face. "Thank you."
Patton nodded, still inexplicably afraid. Now was his chance to leave, since Janus hadn't acknowledged his offer. If he sank out fast enough-- But what exactly was he running from? He wasn't Logic, but he couldn't deny that it made no sense to run from something he couldn't even identify. "So, um. Did you want to…?"
"Where?" Janus asked.
The trapdoor to the speakeasy opened beneath their feet. Patton's door appeared down the hall. He and Janus looked at each other in silence.
"The lighting might be a little better in my room," Patton said finally. He wasn't sure which of them had caused his door to appear. The subconscious was tricky like that sometimes.
"By all means," Janus said.
It was a little nerve-wracking to have Janus in his room. Patton wasn't quite sure why. Maybe the idea that Janus might not like it, and by extension, not like him. After all, Patton's room was as much an extension of himself and his function as his body was.
Janus stepped quietly over the threshold, holding himself still except for his eyes, which darted from object to object.
"Let me know if you start feeling all sentimental," Patton said, a thrill of nerves tingling his spine. "I don't have a lot of practice controlling my room." Janus probably didn't want to cry today, or ever. Not that he seemed like the type to get caught up in nostalgia. Like Logan, he was ruthless, cutting away what didn't serve him with the precision of a surgeon. Or so it seemed.
Janus nodded. Patton frowned. He'd been awfully quiet since Patron had extended the invitation. He almost seemed scared, which didn't make sense. They were safe in here. Too safe, if Patton let them be, sequestered in this hall of nostalgia's anesthetic haze.
"Are those California poppies?" Janus asked, striding forward to a dresser (the design of which had come from a memory of sleepovers at Thomas' grandmother's house).
"Where?" Patton asked, turning on his heel to look. It was difficult to move without tripping over the odd bin or crate of memorabilia. He found himself faced with a choice to either bend backwards to see around Janus or to stand right next to him. Far too close for propriety, they would be wedged right up against each other like the yearbooks on the far bookshelf.
Patton's heart started to race. Why? Why should he be nervous? He bent backwards, muscles aching in protest at the awkward pose, and peered around Janus' body. "I can't tell."
Janus turned, squinting at Patton's predicament, before looking down at the bins on the floor. He seemed to grasp the issue and extended a hand for Patton to take. "Come here."
Come here. Innocuous words, but the same ones he'd used to bring Patton into his arms that terrible night. Patton's heart fluttered.
He stepped over a stack of textbooks and entered Janus' space. Janus' capelet was soft and velvety against his bare arm; his sleeve a little rougher.
"Are they?" Janus asked.
The poppies were already wilting a little and Patton couldn't help but feel sad about that, even though they were imaginary. "Yes."
"How did you get them?"
"California," Patton said, the memory coming to him on a warm breeze that smelled of the outdoors. "Thomas sees them every time he gets to go."
Janus stifled a cough into the back of his hand, nodding all the while. "He wore them in his hair once."
Patton smiled, mind awash in golden light. Thomas and his friends were making a brief pit stop as they journeyed down I-5 and someone, it didn't even matter who, had spotted the blooms growing by the roadside. And they had all worn flowers in their hair for the rest of the day, bright faces made brighter by the addition of something so beautiful. "Do you like California poppies, Janus?"
"It's funny," Janus said, in a tone so devoid of sarcasm and teasing that Patton nearly did a double-take, "It never occurred to me to like them. But seeing them like this…"
He trailed off, coloring slightly, and Patton's breath caught in his throat. He understood perfectly, too perfectly, and it made him tremble.
It had never occurred to him to love Janus, until one day it did. But this-- Oh, no. Oh, no. Not like this. This couldn't be allowed. Janus glanced over at him and Patton felt his smile snap into place despite the newfound ache of wanting beneath his ribs.
"And here I thought you were going to keep me safe from your room," Janus teased.
"Oops!" Patton ran a hand through his hair. "Give me a second here; I can make a space." He thought for a moment before sitting them both down at a wooden picnic table. He imagined embroidery floss in every color, bins stacked with beads, scissors,  and two rolls of masking tape just to be safe.
"Summer camp," Janus said, smiling that crooked smile.
Despite his best efforts, Patton blushed. He tried not to hate himself for it because Janus wouldn't want that. But he also knew he was being far too selfish now, wanting Janus all for himself. There was a line and he had crossed it. "Do you remember what to do?"
Janus was already pawing through the embroidery thread. Loose strands clung to his gloves and Patton watched, intrigued, as Janus' mouth curled into that not-smile he sometimes wore when he was making fun. He withdrew his hands, trailing rainbow strings despite his efforts to shake them off, and glanced at Patton, startling a little when their eyes met.
Patton wasn't sure what to say. 'It's okay' felt hollow, less than a lie. Utterly meaningless. Janus' gloves meant something to him, something that went deeper than just aesthetics. Patton understood, in that moment, what it was all for: the gloves, the high collar, the hat, the sarcasm, the biting remarks, the exaggeration. All guarding Janus' heart. He must have been very afraid. Suddenly his irritation at Patton's inability to prioritize himself made perfect sense.
"I can help you," Patton said, not wanting Janus to feel pressured into taking off his gloves. "You can keep them on, just tell me what colors--"
"Don't be stupid," Janus snapped. "It's just clothing."
"Oh," said Patton. Heat flooded his face, impending tears burning in his eyes. Understanding didn't make it hurt less.
Janus didn't say anything, couldn't, because he was muffling those awful, barking coughs into his sleeve. They sounded so much worse than yesterday. Patton stared at a skein of auburn embroidery floss. He would have to find some way to get through to Roman.
"That was inappropriate," Janus said when he resurfaced. He was a little out of breath; his breath caused loose strings to flutter.
"I understand," Patton said.
"You do?"
Here, Patton hesitated. It seemed a little rude to read Janus, as Roman would say. He had obviously lashed out because he was scared of something.
Janus winced, pressed his lips together, shifted where he sat. "I'm sorry." He wouldn't look at Patton. "I shouldn't have said that."
"We can do this another time," Patton said, "if you're not ready. I just wanted…" It seemed stupid to say it out loud now, stupid and manipulative. "I wanted you to feel accepted."
Janus tugged his gloves off without fanfare, folded them neatly, and set them down on the table. His left hand was scaled, which Patton supposed he should have anticipated. "Don't look," Janus said. Patton frowned, trying to parse this, and Janus elaborated, "I want it to be a surprise."
"Oh!" Patton said, relief flooding his chest like morning sunlight through an eastward-facing window. "Okay." He stared at the embroidery thread, thinking. He had never been all that good at color theory, but… Maybe he could do a dark green for Janus's scales, and gold because they shimmered. To represent himself, he would of course use blue thread. And for the two of them, gray. But what shade of green…? Patton picked up a skein of army green floss, then kelly green, then moss green. "Janus?"
"Hm?"
"I need to look at you."
"Oh, Patton, I'm flattered, but need?"
"Can you just give me your hand for a second?" Patton asked, blushing.
"Which one?" Janus asked archly.
"The left one."
"...What for?"
Patton, still not looking at Janus, held up the three skeins of embroidery floss. "I need to color match."
Janus let out a huff of air through his nose. "I'm much prettier than that."
Then an idea struck. "Ooh, I know what to do! I still need your hand, though."
"Alright, alright." Janus leaned over, extending his hand to Patton. He flinched a little when Patton held it in his own, but did not pull away.
"Hmm," said Patton, examining the scales and the way they reflected back the light. It took a bit of thinking, but he managed to imagine a skein of thread in the same glossy green-gold color.
Then Janus stiffened and started to cough again, his hand curling around Patton's fingers until his nails dug painfully into Patton's skin. The fit was low and ragged and rough, left Janus teary eyed and gasping.
"You're sure this is Roman?" Patton asked, dimly aware that he was still holding Janus' hand.
"Forget it," Janus said, his voice like tattered silk. "You said you'd talk to him."
"I'll go right now if you want me to."
Janus shook his head. "Are you done with my hand? If not, I have a few to spare."
"Oh!" said Patton. "Yes. Sorry." He let go of Janus's hand, knuckles aching where Janus' nails had dug in. Janus' cough must have hurt far more than he was letting on.
Right. Compartmentalize. Friendship bracelets.
Patton picked his colors, eyeballed the thread length, cut them down, and taped the ends to the table. He decided on a simple striped pattern, flat, so it could slide easily under Janus's sleeve or the cuffs of his gloves.
"So you and Remus?" Patton said after he had fallen into a rhythm and didn't need to focus quite so hard.
"We're friends, yes."
"But you said--" Patton cut himself off, embarrassed. He certainly didn't want to be reminded of that awful night, and Janus probably didn't either.
"I know."
Patton was pulling too hard. He set his threads down and added another piece of tape. "I don't get it."
Janus sighed. "I'd rather not talk behind his back, but I will say this: He was on his worst behavior when he introduced himself."
Patton considered this but couldn't think of anything to say other than 'thank God.' That seemed rude, so he just kept his mouth shut. The silence that ensued felt equally as rude, and words slipped out of Patton's mouth before he could stop himself, "Do you love him?"
Janus didn't answer. Patton was tempted to look at him, to try to read his expression, but didn't want to risk ruining the surprise. Finally, Janus sighed and Patton heard the gentle rustle of his clothing as he shifted in his seat. "Defensive sarcastic quip."
Patton dropped his threads again so he could muffle a laugh behind his hands. "Sorry, was that too personal?"
"No, no, I love talking about myself. Maybe next you can ask me about my deepest fears."
"I didn't mean to be pushy," Patton said. It was hard not to be; he was so full of love love love he just wanted to give it away like Tupperwares full of snickerdoodles, like wildflower bouquets. He wanted Janus, wanted his whole fam-ILY to know and feel it as deeply as he felt it.
And Janus especially, Patton wanted to tell him with his lips, with his hands, with his tongue. His whole body radiating love.
But just because he wanted didn't mean he could have. He ached with a selfish desire to be held again, safe in Janus' arms. But even Patton was smart enough to understand that that moment was over and done with. They had shared it, and now it was another snapshot for the shoebox Patton kept in his closet. His own memories, separate from Thomas. A testament to his personhood.
They worked in silence after that, until Patton's wandering thoughts came to rest, inevitably, on the trouble at hand. "Hey, Janus?"
"Yes?"
"What do you think we should do now? Thomas can't keep going like this for much longer, I don't think. He hasn't done anything. And I-- I'm not saying-- I'm not trying to say it's, you know, immoral to rest, but this doesn't seem healthy." And also, it did chafe Patton a little, to see Thomas being so lazy, but he could keep that to himself.
"The sooner Logan and Roman get over themselves, the better," Janus said.
"I haven't checked on them yet today." Patton heaved a sigh and tried to focus on his pattern. He had the matte gray hooked around his finger at the moment, his own deliberate reminder to compromise.
"They haven't checked on you at all."
"So, what, then?" Patton asked, struggling not to look up. "I should get mad and ignore them right back?"
"That's what I would do," Janus said. "And you did ask. But…" A long-ish pause. "As we both know, I'm always right."
Oh. Patton closed his eyes, trying not to fold over and bury his forehead in the rough wood of the picnic table. He'd never wanted to see the worst in Janus, but he'd been bracing for it all the same. And every time he held his breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop, it never happened.
That didn't mean they were never going to fight. Patton knew he was naive, but he wasn't that naive. But he had been bracing for something so much worse than this.
It was for Thomas. He had to remind himself. Janus had even said so, down in the parlor. It was all for Thomas. And Patton was sure, when it came time to make the next big decision, they would be at odds again.
But maybe… Maybe it didn't have to be so hostile. Couldn't they disagree without being enemies?
"You are always right, Janus," Janus said in Patton's voice. "And you're so handsome, and smart, too."
It was equal parts creepy and amusing, but Patton appreciated what Janus was trying to do, so he smiled. "I mean, you are smart. And h--" The word caught in his throat. They did all look very similar, though the subtle nature of the subconscious altered their appearances somewhat. It sharpened up Janus' features some, took away several inches of height, made his eyes dark and flashing. "And handsome," Patton finished weakly.
"You already said that," Janus said, voice dripping with faux-innocence.
"You're sweet, is what you are," Patton teased back.
"Finished," said Janus.
Patton blinked, thrown off, before he realized what Janus meant. "I'm almost done. Give me juuuust a second." He finished the bracelet with a practiced hand. "Can I look now?"
"Give me your hand. Then you can look."
Patton extended his left hand and finally looked over at Janus for the first time since they had started. The bright colors of the bracelet caught his eye immediately; it was an intricate weave of only two colors: bright yellow and true blue. Janus fingers were deft and gentle around Patton's wrist. He made no remarks about the purple and black bracelet already tied on.
"Oh, Janus, it's perfect!" Patton said. Hot tears welled up in his eyes. He let them fall, unashamed. It was nice to cry happy tears for once. "Your turn."
Janus pushed up his sleeve, tilting his head at Patton's bracelet. "What does it mean?"
"The green is for your scales," Patton explained, positioning the bracelet around Janus' right wrist. "The blue is for me. And the gray is.." He paused, suddenly embarrassed. "Well, it's a reminder."
One of the ends brushed against Janus' forearm and he twitched, nearly pulling out of Patton's grasp. "That tickled," he explained.
"You're ticklish?"
"No," Janus said, far too quickly for it to be the truth.
Patton smiled at him, though he knew they were a long way off from friendly touches. It struck him then just how badly he wanted that future. He wanted cuddle sessions with Janus on the couch, just the two of them. He wanted stolen kisses in the kitchen and tickle fights in bed. He wanted Janus, body and soul, consequences be damned. "Noted," Patton said. "Janus: totally not ticklish, even a little bit."
"Gospel truth," Janus said.
Patton finished tying on the bracelet and sat back. "Well…" He didn't want to leave his room, which was a sure sign it was time to go. "I'd better go check on my kiddos."
To his surprise, Janus didn't scowl or nag. He tugged his gloves back on, carefully sliding the bracelet inside the cuff. "What do you say to them?"
"Just that I'm here," Patton said. "And I love them.
"You know, Patton--" Janus got up and held the door open, breaking the spell of Patton's room somewhat-- "sometimes I think you're too good for the likes of us."
And then he was gone, sinking out before Patton could ask him what he meant by that.
Patton went first to Logan's room. Logan had maintained his silence after the meeting, not even answering to tell Patton to go away. The only hint Patton had that he was still in there was that Thomas hadn't gone completely off the rails.
"Hey, Logan." Patton knocked gently. "I'll go away soon, because I know you don't want me to bother you. I just wanted to say… Well, I'm not sure what you need right now, but I know this isn't it. So whenever you're ready to come out, I'll be here." It was so hard not to spill his guts to that plain white door. Almost like a confessional, only that Logan stubbornly refused to tell him what he had to do to earn forgiveness. "I'll go now. Come get me if you need anything, okay? I love you and I miss you." He waited a few seconds for any signs of movement within, but there was nothing.
Down the hall to Roman's room then.
The sight of Virgil seated on the floor with his back pressed up against Roman's cherrywood door made Patton pause, breaths stuttering in his chest.
He kept his distance, but Virgil had startled at the sound of his steps on the carpet.
Patton flashed him a thumbs up and cocked his head.
Virgil nodded.
Patton sank out. What else could he do? If Roman would rather talk to Virgil than to him, well… Patton couldn't blame him.
He sat down heavily at the kitchen island, staring down at the half-finished puzzle. Tears blurred his eyes and he took off his glasses as they started to fall. He was so, so sick of crying. He did it all the time. Every strong emotion moved him to tears.
He wanted to crawl back to Janus' room, relive that tender night. Just once, he wanted someone else to pick him up off the ground. He was thoroughly sick of being his own hero.
He had mostly gotten himself under control by the time Virgil popped up by the fridge. It was only his breathing that still troubled him, heavy and painful in his chest.
"Hey, Virge."
"Since when do you call me that?" Virgil asked, opening the fridge.
It was reflex more than anything that forced Patton to his feet. "I can make you something."
"You don't have to," Virgil mumbled, cheeks going scarlet under his foundation.
"I want to," Patton said. That much was still true, at least. "What are you in the mood for?"
"Uh, I was just gonna make a sandwich," Virgil said.
"BLT?"
"Sure."
Patton nodded, clenching his left hand into a fist by his side. Virgil was incredibly observant; he was bound to notice Janus' friendship bracelet. Patton wasn't sure whether to let him or to bring it up.
Virgil saved him from having to decide. "Where have you been all morning?" Patton wordlessly held up his arm, feeling for all the world like a guilty child. Sure enough, Virgil's eyes narrowed. But to Patton's surprise, no lecture followed. "Janus made that?"
"Mm-hm." Patton nodded. "I made him one, too."
"Is he wearing it?" Virgil asked, looking dumbfounded.
"Yeah," Patton said, a little emboldened now that he knew Virgil wasn't angry. "Tied it on myself."
"He let you do that? Janus?" Virgil ran both hands through his hair, looking at Patton like he'd just expressed a desire to go cliff diving while blindfolded.
"I mean, I didn't have to tie him down."
Virgil sighed through his nose and wandered to the kitchen island with a lost expression. "That's weird."
Patton opened up the fridge. "Are you okay?" he said to the condiments rack, not wanting to make Virgil uncomfortable with too much eye contact.
"Watch him," Virgil said. "Watch him like a hawk… A hawk with binoculars."
"Aww!" said Patton, picturing it. "Oh! How's Roman?"
"Conflicted," Virgil said. "I told him you've been hanging out with Janus."
Patton bit his tongue and pulled a head of lettuce out of the crisper drawer. It wasn't wrong to spend time with Janus. He loved Janus. Love was never wrong. "How'd he take it?"
"Nnnot that bad?" Virgil said. "I think it helps that Thomas hasn't gone full, y'know, Squip."
"You know I wouldn't let that happen," Patton said. He moved over to the counter and paused to take a few deep breaths. His chest hurt a little. Probably just from crying too much. But that reminded him of Janus and that worrisome, mysterious cough. "By the way, does Roman seem… in control?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you know, he accidentally made it super cold for a little bit."
"Oh," said Virgil, "yeah. He apologized for that. He's okay now."
Patton nodded, trying not to let his worry show on his face. But it crept into the corners of his mind and kept him silent as he made two BLTs. If Janus was sure it wasn't Remus and Virgil was sure it wasn't Roman… Who else could it be? Or what else?
No answers sprang into Patton's mind. He bit his lip and stabbed one fancy toothpick each through sandwiches. He slid one plate over to Virgil, mindful not to upset any stray puzzle pieces, then rounded the kitchen island to sit next to Virgil.
"You…" he started, and paused to catch his breath. "You're not mad, are you?"
"I mean, I don't love that you're hanging out with Janus. I wish you wouldn't. I wish he'd leave us all alone and go back to slinking around in the shadows like the snake he is." Virgil turned his head to look at the new friendship bracelet on Patton's arm. "But you're your own Side. It would be wrong for me to try to control you. I just really hope he doesn't hurt you, Patton."
"So you're not mad?"
"No, pop star, I'm not mad. Just worried about you."
"Thanks, kiddo."
--
It seemed that these days, the mindscape was just made up of one crisis after another. After spending a pleasant day with Virgil, albeit with his breaths dragging in and out of his body like the air was too thick to breathe, the next morning found Patton doubled over in a fit of coughing so intense it knocked his glasses off. He ducked right back into his room, kicking his glasses in before him, and spat out a mouthful of heart-shaped flowers onto the floor.
Hm. Uh-oh. He wasn't an expert on biology, but he was fairly sure that wasn't supposed to happen.
The blooms were pretty, though, bright magenta hearts with little white tails. Bleeding hearts, they were called.
Patton frowned. Hadn't Janus said… Yes. 'I want you to protect that bleeding heart of yours.' How ironic. Maybe. Patton could never seem to use 'irony,' right, something Logan was always quick to point out.
He coughed again, but no flowers came up this time. That was good, probably. Coughing was bad, coughing up blood was worse. Surely coughing up flowers had to be somewhere in the middle.
He stood up straight again and banished the flowers into nothingness. Was it coincidence that Janus had a cough? Was it contagious? He hadn't said anything about flowers, though.
Patton sank out, grabbing his glasses on the way. If he was coughing, then he was probably sick. He knew how to handle that.
Since Virgil rarely spent time in the living room, Patton could hole up there with tea and toast and Adventure Time on the TV. Just until he was better, and then it would be right back to trying to fix things. He wondered if Janus would be proud or whether he would just push for Patton to rest more. Maybe both.
Virgil made an appearance a few hours later, about the time that Patton felt his patience running thin. The cough wasn't getting better, but he had no full-body fatigue to make the cartoon marathon bearable. Sitting still for too long made him antsy.
"Roman invited me in," Virgil called from the kitchen, dashing any hopes Patton had for conversation. "I just wanted to let y-- What are you doing?"
"I think I'm getting sick," Patton explained, wincing as the words seemed to claw their way out of his torn-up throat.
"Are you okay?"
Patton nodded. Aside from the cough, he really did feel fine. Maybe this would pass quickly. "Tell Roman I said hi."
"Will do." Virgil gave one last, lingering look before he sank out.
This left Patton alone with the ache in his chest and the vast loneliness threatening to swallow him whole. He tried not to think too much about Janus, lest he inadvertently summon him again, but it was so hard now. He didn't ever want to be apart from Janus. It was such a pure and simple yearning that Patton couldn't even feel guilty for it (though he did feel an echo of guilt that he didn't feel guilty). But it was a desire born of love, and how could that be bad?
The only bad thing about it was that Janus didn't love him back. Of course he didn't. How could he? All he ever did was run around babysitting Patton through crying spells, desperately trying to get him to pull himself together. There was nothing remotely attractive about that. In fact, with Janus, it seemed that all Patton did was take, take, take. He was guilty of the exact behavior that had him so wrung-out and desperate in the first place. How embarrassing.
Patton coughed into the crook of his arm, catching flowers and leaves in his mouth and banishing them without looking. He'd been sick before, they all had, but never like this. He almost wished for fatigue or a headache, something to make resting a little more bearable. Right now, he just felt lazy.
A bottle of NyQuil appeared on the couch next to him, nestled up against an embroidered throw pillow. Patton looked at it. He could already hear Logan lecturing him about the dangers of misusing medication, but… Patton was sick. And he was imaginary. And Thomas probably knew better than to chug NyQuil at the first sign of illness.
It would be fine. Patton poured out a dose and drank it down with his nose plugged in the hopes of masking the alcohol-tinged artificial sweetness. He still shuddered at the syrupy sensation on his tongue. Then he sank out, changed into his pajamas, and buried himself under his covers to slip into a coma.

Can you elaborate on the band au? It’s my favorite au of yours and I’d love to see more
of course!!!!! (it’s one of my favorites too lol!)
okay imma ramble about pat and lo for a bit, because i feel like i focus on the band more than them like all the time
they’ve been best friends for FOREVER, like since before kindergarten, and at this point they’re basically brothers (remus is also like a older brother figure to both of them, despite being their age)
Logan works in the school library during sixth period, and with Patton’s passion for community service, they both really enjoy volunteering at the public library on the weekends
Logan doesn’t really like coming to the Disasters’ practices/gigs/concerts because it’s a little too much noise and people for him, but Patton loves going to gigs and (loudly) supporting his friends so he records their performances for Lo
Patton is the band’s biggest fan. He’s been friends (and neighbors) with Janus since they were two and friends with Roman and Remus since kindergarten (Remus more actually in sophomore year but still), and he was Virgil’s first friend when V moved to (i think i named the city) Copper Cove, so he loves them all so much and even buys a foam finger to wave at their gigs and makes a t-shirt with their logo on it
(he’s also the biggest prinxiety shipper)
((he thinks Virgil and Roman are dating for the first couple weeks after Roman joins the band. he is corrected by Janus and Logan and is as such slightly crestfallen))
Pat is usually the first to stand in for one of the band boys when they need it - like if they have a gig and can’t man a fundraiser booth, etc - and one time he cries because Janus thanks him with lemon bars
Pat is actually the most popular of his trio (Ro/Lo/Pat) and actually probably the whole crew, bc even though Ro is really popular, Patton doesn’t usually get made fun of behind his back like Ro does :(
Logan may not come to performances, but he likes helping them with technical stuff like transportation and lighting ideas and budgets
he also really enjoys just hanging out with the Disasters - he, Janus, and Roman all love poetry and talk about literature a lot (usually just Janus and Logan in the library though bc Roman doesn’t like having to whisper the whole time), he and Remus and Patton hang out during lunch a lot, he and Virgil like to hang out because it’s chill
on that note Logan and Janus get along really well and Janus totally doesn’t have a crush on Lo at all in any sense
(in all seriousness, Janus really admires Logan and Lo really enjoys Jan’s company, they can talk about philosophy and psychology and sociology and literature and history for hours)
okay i just love Pat and Lo a lot moving along
Roman and Logan are adhd/autism solidarity
Jan and Remus are best friends bro
^^ when Remus was younger and going through a tough time with his dad, he spent a lot of time over at Janus’ house (and Roman spent time with Patton and Logan), so now Jan’s mom and dad love him like their weirder and much louder son
Janus! Plays! Keytar!!!
He learned classical piano when he was younger but his dad said “Giovanna on god our son is gonna be so Rad” and got him a keytar
Janus’ dad is a favorite with the Disasters
(he was in a band when he was in high school so he’s totally hip with the kids, esp Virgil bc he, too, played drums)
((Janus’ mom is so (fondly) exasperated))
Roman teaches Remus a lot of tumbling tricks from cheer so Remus also just does random handstands during practice
(the twins have handstand competitions to see who can stay in one longest sometimes. Janus likes to throw small objects at them while they do so. Virgil keeps a first aid kit on hand at all times)
Roman makes the band a logo for hypothetical merch!! he almost doesn’t show them because he doesn’t want them to think he’s too weird or enthusiastic since he just joined, but Remus sees him working on it and brings it up oh-so-subtly at practice
(”Hey guys we should make t-shirt designs. Roman likes designing stuff like a nerd i bet he would do it. what do you think Roman don’t you think that’s cool and my original idea with no reference to the contents of your sketchbook whatsoever”)
Virgil has a beanie collection that he protects with his LIFE
(his favorite is one that’s a gradient from purple to black)
Janus loves that eye imagery babeyyyy
Roman loves strawberries and that is not related to ANYTHING except that Virgil offhandedly gives him a strawberry gummy one time before practice and Ro goes on a whole ramble about how much he loves strawberries, and now every time Virgil sees something strawberry-themed he has to physically restrain himself from getting it and giving it to Ro
(he does see a beanie with a little embroidered strawberry on it one time tho. and he does not restrain himself. he gives it to Patton to give Roman because he feels a little stupid about buying it on a whim but Roman loves it and makes a whole outfit around it to wear to one of their weekend practices)
im tired so imma stop there but if theres anything else u wanna know do NOT be afraid to ask bc i love talking about this au
