For those who are unsure of whether or not they really have the "sensitivity to cold" symptom of fibromyalgia, because you think that it's just you not being able to handle colder temperatures like other people, that's one way of putting it. The other way is, when it's winter and the temperatures start dropping, do you feel your pain more intensely? Do you feel like you have more problems with your joints? Is your partner always commenting how cold your fingers and toes are, but it somehow gets more frequent in winter? Those are other ways to consider being sensitive to the cold.

Not really a question, but I wanted to tag onto all the asks people have been sending about getting traction for their fics.
I’ve been writing fanfic for 10+ years now and I know that’s not a lot, and when I first started I was god-awful… but guess what? I was really popular for some reason and I didn’t know why. I guess people enjoyed what I wrote because I clearly had so much fun doing it when I look back on it.
But through the years, my writing has changed and my fandoms have changed. I now write for fandoms that are barely active or have little content to begin with. My last fic has 5 kudos and 2 comments, with 129 hits. Posted two months ago. And I have to ask myself: does it matter what the stats are, when I write for myself?
Before, when I was younger, I loved the validation and attention. Honestly even now, who doesn’t love validation? It tells you you’re good. But what I’ve learned after all this time is that I am good on my own and I don’t need someone to tell me that. I love my writing.
But the most important thing is that I know what my writing means to me and its worth. After all this time, my writing has become my safe space, my comfort zone, the place I can escape to when I am hurt, overjoyed, angry or incredibly sad. My writing is mine and no one can take that away from me.
So at the end of the day, the value of my writing is worth far more than some numbers on ao3 or fanfiction. So I guess what I want to say is: even if 1 person or 100 people read it, your writing is good on its own. You should be proud, because writing is not easy and putting it out there for others to read isn’t easier. The worth of your writing is what you believe it is, not what anyone else says or what numbers say. Just my 2 cents. <3
well said ❤️❤️❤️

I read your post about not letting kudos and hits upset us. I try to think this way but I'm curious about something else. I've written many fanfics for my fandom and they're all "flop". I don't mind that honestly. But then some writers have written only one fic about the ship I do and and it gets hundreds of kudos. How do some writers achieve that when I'm doing the same and it doesn't get the same response. What else can I do?
I’m afraid I can’t give you a definite answer about what you should do or why this person’s work is more popular, but what I can give you are some advice and, from my experience, some reasons that might explain why other’s works receive more hits and kudos.
start with why other writers’ works are more popular when it’s the same characters, same ship, same fandom. there are various factors at play that might be it;
maybe the person already has large audience base prior to their posting about the fandom you’re in, I know a few authors who already have these sorts of loyal readers that would read any work the authors posted even if they (the readers) were not in that fandom.
maybe someone, anyone, decided share the link to this person’s work on Tumblr or Twitter (X) or any social media platform, and it kind of became viral, thus it drew in lots and lots of readers. it could take just one person, didn’t necessarily have to be the author themself, to share the link among the fandom as a recommendation, or maybe a screenshot of one sentence from the fic that they liked, what happened next is that the replies were filled with people asking for the link.
tags and summary are important factors when people are looking for a fic to read. so maybe this person’s work is tagged with the content people were looking for? maybe their summary grabbed people’s attention or curiosity?
these are just what I can think of over the top of my head.
as for what you can do to gain more readers, I’ve never seen your work so the advice I can give will be a general one; I believe the trick lies in summary, tags as well as the format of one’s work.
when it comes to AO3 (I assume it’s your platform?), tags and summary are the main things people use to determine whether or not they want to click on the fic.
tag your content properly, what characters or pairings it’s about, as well as what the readers will find upon reading your work (you don’t have to spoil it, only the general tags that will give your readers an idea of what they’re in for).
summaries are just as important. there are no “rules” obviously, and I’m not telling you or any writers what to do. though a little advice that I personally take is that you use this little summary section AO3 gives you to do anything to make sure it stands out and that people will see it and want to click on it. that means leave “author’s note” out of the summary section. folks, AO3 summary is the first glimpse into the fic itself that people will see prior to clicking on it, most of the time, people look at the summary to see the author’s writing style and if what’s written, plotwise, grabs their interest. personally, when I see an author use “summary” as a place to write “author’s note”, chances are, I will scroll past that fic as I am interested in what the fic is about, not what the author has to say about their opinion on said fic or their personal life or anything (there’s an author’s note section for that) and if I can’t get a glimpse of what the plot is about or what the author’s writing style is from the summary section, then I won’t click on it, and will look for other fic that can get me interested instead.
moving on to fic format, again, I am not telling anyone what to do here. this is only a suggestion, an advice I’ve learned and want to share: when you write your fic, make sure to use line and paragraph spacing. if your 10k word long fic is one long block of text with no paragraph break, chances are, people will back away from it entirely. also, if it’s two different characters talking with dialogues, don’t put all of their dialogues in one paragraph. for instance, a paragraph for character A’s dialogue, then another separate paragraph for character B’s dialogue and so on.
and I think that’s it for my advice? however, I’ll say this again that the secret to truly enjoying your role as a fanfic writer is that you only focus on yourself. write whatever you want for yourself. it doesn’t matter if this person’s work is more popular, because fanfics and fandoms aren’t a competition. you are your main audience. just have fun creating the stories you want to create for you.

An ask game for writers to procrastinate working on your WIPs
Thank you for tagging me @ic3-que3n @theearlgreymage @wellbelesbian @shrekgogurt @orange-peony @youarenevertooold @whatevertheweather @thewholelemon @cutestkilla @aristocratic-otter @monbons @emeryhall @valeffelees (wow everyone is out here playing huh?)
🦈Tell us the name of your / one of your WIP(s)
As of right now, I’m going with Back and Back and Back but that may change.
🍄Decscribe your wip / one of your wips in the format of “___ + ___ =___”
Past flashbacks in which Baz grows up being visited by an older Simon in the woods outside his house in Hampshire + current 7th year Simon suddenly finds himself traveling back in time to visit young Baz = both Simon and Baz trying to figure out what’s happening in the present, resulting in them falling in love in a mesh of past and present
🌍What tags or warnings will your / one of your wip(s) need if you intend to share it?
Soulmates, time travel, canon divergent, Watford-era, angst with a happy ending, kid!Baz, lightly inspired by Time Traveler’s Wife.
🧭An alternative title to your / one of your WIP(s)?
I mentioned this last week, but I quite like Start at the End, even though I don’t think it technically is accurate or describes the fic.
⚠️Which wip you’re most likely to finish or update next?
Idk, this one will be quite long, but everything else in my WIP folder are just attempts at starting a premise I liked, but none of them have gotten much traction, so probably this one? Hopefully?
💾What is your document of your wip / a wip called? (not the stories actual title but what you’ve saved it as)
Time Travel AU
🖍Post Any sentence from your wip
He whistles, looking around and finally taking the time to fully appreciate the tree house.
“Did you make this?”
“With help,” I explain. “Some from Father. Mostly from you.”
His eyebrows raise in surprise. That’s one thing I’ve yet to figure out, why he forgets. Sometimes, he remembers our past visits with more detail than I do. As if they’d just happened the day before instead of years ago. Other times, he can’t remember something as big as building a treehouse with me. He reminds me of my grandmother, when her dementia had its grips on her. She’d recall something from her childhood so clearly, and the next minute, she’d forget my name.
Father didn’t want me to call attention to it in front of her. He said it would only make her more confused. So I don’t mention it to him, either. We just sort of…dance around it, without mentioning it outright. (He’d fit right in with my family, honestly.) I just clarify things and then we move on.
♻️A scrapped idea for your current WIP
I was thinking about having the Humdrum be a time traveling younger Simon, or something like that, in addition to current Simon being a time traveler. Like, they discover there’s another version of him traveling, but I thought that would be too confusing. So instead, he’s just the regular ol’ Humdrum.
🤔What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?
I have a lil Drabble in my head about Baz being sad while his wedding ring is getting fixed by the jewelers for a week so Simon has to cheer him up. (It me. Rubbing my empty ring finger all week while it’s getting fixed and I hate it not being there.)
🤡How many Wips are you actively working on?
Actively? I think just this one right now. There are about 4 other half starts from earlier this year when I was just throwing spaghetti noodles at the wall to see what stuck. Some of them I may come back to if I get a burst of inspiration or something.
🛠Is there a scene or anything in the WIP you are struggling with right now?
(One of) the big reveals because the scene carries a lot of emotional weight, and I want to do it right.
❤️Not a question, just a second kudos to send.
And kudos to anyone who read this far!
Anyone else want to play? @facewithoutheart @hushed-chorus @iamamythologicalcreature @ileadacharmedlife @blackberrysummerblog @run-for-chamo-miles @mooncello @angelsfalling16 @artsyunderstudy and anyone else interested! 💜

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Saw this on my dash and there was permission for anyone who writes fics to do it, so I'm doing it!
1. How many works do you have on A03?
41!
2. What's your total A03 word count?
271,531! I'm pretty proud honestly, never thought the number would get so high! Also I'm pretty sure the smut alone is over 100,000 LMAO
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly Ace Attorney at the moment!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
like a warm embrace
rough around the edges
wait (they don't love you like I love you)
where there is a flame (someone's bound to get burned)
hold onto me ('cause I'm a little unsteady)
WOW honestly i didnt know the last one was so high!! That was my first ever aa fic.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to! What ends up happening is that I respond pretty well at first, but then i get overwhelmed and stop replying :(( And then by the time I'm ok again, i feel like it would be weird to respond. Please know i read each comment and it means the world to me!!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Definitely 'burning the memories (that might have redeemed you)' since its a fic that takes place during 1-2 and before edgeworth's character development. I STILL HAVE THE HAPPY ENDING SEQUEL IN MY DRAFTS LMAO. I hope to finish it one day!!
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Not sure! Most of my fics have happy endings.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope, not hate at least. Ive gotten some backhanded compliments before, but never flat out hate. Thank goodness for that.
9. Do you write smut?
Too friggin much
10. Do you write crossovers?
The closest ive ever gotten is a WIP where its a low-key Good Omens and Ace Attorney crossover, lmao
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Thankfully no!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! What's new pussycat was translated into Chinese recently!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nah, I would be open to it, though!
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Nrmt for real. They make my brain go BRRRRRRRR.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
There's a lot, lmao. Probably the sequel to I am not a vessel for your good intent.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue I would say. Dirty talk too, in smut.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions😔
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Nah, not my thing.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Flash lmao
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I'd have to say Flame! That's my baby, and I think it has some of my best writing and pining in there.
I'm tagging @sapphire-wine, @majoringinsarcasm @sandboxer
@rage-against-the-dying-of-light, @apprenticeofdoyle and anyone else who would like to do this!!!

(this is not to fix or invalidate how you feel at all!!) but my jaw dropped seeing that there were hate threads?? on the dramione reddit i see laoha constantly mentioned in a "what will fill this laoha shaped hole after finishing", "where else can i find platinum tier banter like this" way and not one bad word to say. i'm so sorry to hear there was hate and that it affected you, your writing comes across so confident and well-seasoned but ofc you're human too. keep on rockin pac!! we ADORE you!!
Oh, geez. Fandom-ancient discourse under the cut.
For anyone who's newish, back when laoha was publishing (end of 2019 to end of 2021) it was a thing on Facebook and Reddit to have several threads a week soliciting negative comments about specific fics. It was often phrased as a question like, "Which fic did you DNF and why?" or "What turns you off of a fic?" but sometimes it was more like, "I hated [whatever fic], does anyone else feel the same way?" And then people would proceed to drag the shit out of works and writers. I was by NO MEANS the only person impacted, although I may have had the highest ratio of hate to actual readership. Writers made it super clear that it was hurtful, that they no longer felt able to participate in fandom spaces because of the negativity, entitlement and cruelty, and people would tell them to grow a tougher skin. I mostly stayed out of it at the time, because discourse is always awful and pointless and I'm a pretty small potato in a spectacularly huge fandom. Also, it's the internet, and effective moderation is hard work. Thankfully Reddit made the decision to ban those threads, and hopefully it's become a more welcoming community as a result. Which is really my entire point. There is a human being behind every single fic a reader encounters, whether it's the top-fic-by-kudos masterpiece that nothing will ever equal or a palate cleansing speed read or whatever. Overwhelmingly those people are also readers who often want to engage in the community aspect of fandom. At that time, human beings who wrote for fun in their free time were going . . . this is incredibly hurtful, please stop, and some readers were effectively saying, on a constant basis, fuck you, shut up and give me more 100k+ fic written exactly to my personal tastes. Publishing my wildly uneven first-ever novel-length work with an unpopular Hermione in that climate was not a great experience for me, and it took its toll. Enough time has passed that I've mostly been able to sift through, take what helps me and leave the rest. Like: I will NEVER write miscommunication again! I'm also SO grateful to hear that some communities have chosen to take responsibility for shaping not just the tone but the values of their spaces. It was the right thing to do and too long in coming. Hopefully new DHr writers feel embraced and supported if they choose to engage in fandom social media. It should be fun. I honestly don't know what any of us are doing here if it's not.
That is not what you asked for, anon, but there you have it: ancient discourse that I hope has become irrelevant. I'm so glad to hear people are being kind!

I Don't Get It
Ok, so I read a thread on X about what's happening in the next chapter of Given 10th Mix. I was excited to know that there was some akiharu moments there, but then afterwards I got disappointed and confused at how Akihiko is treating Haruki.
Honestly, I'm pissed.
So, they're like, supposed to be so called married, because Akihiko is showing off his ring, but then Haruki isn't wearing one because Akihiko doesn't let him? And his reason was so that Haruki doesn't look like a lonely married woman? It looks more like the only one married or engaged here is Akihiko (to whom tho? I don't know, because nobody else is wearing a ring) and Haruki is not. Who even think that when you see a person wearing a ring while having a coffee in a cafe all alone that you'll think "oh look, that person is a lonely married woman!" Who the hell think that way?? You cannot tell if a person is married and lonely just by looking at the ring and noticing zero companion he/she has!? And seriously, you do not jump to such conclusion right away after seeing a person wearing a ring and alone to be someone who is married and lonely! On the contrary, Haruki not wearing a ring is just telling everyone that he's single and can be approached by anyone! This is mind boggling to me! Would you want your partner to be the only one wearing a ring and you're not wearing one? Would you like that? I don't understand Akihiko's logic. I don't understand Kizu sensei's logic! Is Akihiko taking his relationship with Haruki seriously? Is Kizu sensei taking Akihiko and Haruki's relationship seriously? What kind of a partner is Kizu sensei trying to make out of Akihiko for Haruki? The Akihiko who freaked out from not having a clear relationship with Murata Ugetsu is now not wanting Haruki-his partner-for-real, to wear a ring while he does? So, that's like back then he wanted a relationship with Murata Ugetsu but the other person didn't want it. And now he wanted a relationship with Haruki and already got it, but then not wanting Haruki to let other people know that he is in a relationship with him? History seems to be repeating here, in a way. What the hell? This is confusing af. What the hell is going on in Akihiko's mind?
I'm taking this as "Akihiko not knowing how to be in a relationship with someone", given that he never had serious relationships with anyone in the past before, and that Haruki is the first person he's seriously romantically involved with. But 10 years have supposedly passed, and shouldn't he be going through some character development already? Unless Haruki as the person who's been in a real relationship before, allow all this to happen. After 10 years being with Akihiko and still not understanding him seems like he's okay with being confused all the time. Haruki seems to be tolerating his lover too much. Is Haruki taking his relationship with Akihiko seriously?
I even couldn't use the word married for their relationship because it doesn't feel and look that way. They're not living together when they're in the same town and only one of them is wearing a ring. So, to me Akihiko and Haruki aren't married, they're still just lovers. Kudos to Ritsuka and Mafuyu for looking more like a married couple from living together all this time.
Well, since Haruki is not wearing a ring then he's open to be snatched away by anyone anytime now lol.

How would you recommend interacting with a writer. If a story wasn't to your taste, or left you unsatisfied. But you still want to encourage, the writer. And show gratitude for the free entertainment?
Hi anon!
The short answer is, a simple "thanks for the fic!" or "thanks for sharing!" or even a few emojis will often suffice. You really don't have to let the writer know what you didn't like. At the end of the day, they're not writing the fic for you, and obiously not every story is going to satisfy everyone the same way--otherwise we'd all be the same and that would be a horrendously boring world to live in.
The long answer is probably unecessary, but I like to procrastinate on my WIPs talk 😂
There's a format of commenting that goes a little like this: "i don't normally like [X ship, X trope, the way X acts in canon, etc...], but i love the way you do it!!" And honestly I myself have used that before--mostly for tropes, though possibly for some ships as well. And on the surface, that's reads as a compliment. Personally, when ppl leave me that sort of comment, I'll usually interpret it as a compliment too--unless they're full on bashing the thing I love (which sometimes happens with people criticizing canon). And I do think it's INTENDED as a compliment. (That's how I've meant it, when I used it, so I do try my best to also interpret others in good faith.)
But it can also read as "I don't like this thing that you really like and I felt the need to tell you that." Honestly, I didn't even realize it would come across that way until I saw someone else point it out. And then...yeah, I started to notice the fics I get it on more (A lot lot lot of my ladrien fics, lmao.)
So I'm at a weird cross roads where I try not to use that anymore--unless it's with someone I'm fairly sure will understand how I mean it?because sometimes you do have more of a rapport with certain ppl and they'll understand what you mean--but I also don't want to say it's 100% a bad thing to say. I really do understand the intent.
Anyways, my point in bringing that up is that you never don't know what seemingly innocent "this wasn't quite to my taste" comment is going to read as an insult. And so if you really DO want to encourage said writer, I'd recommend sticking to the positives.
Another big thing that's important to me personally is: don't lie.
People have a tendancy to...I don't want to say be disingenuous, but certainly to exaggerate at times on the internet. You see that in the SCREAMING CRYING EATING GLASS types comments. And those are USUALLY sincere in the way that the emotions they convey are sincere. We as a society understand they're not literally eating glass but that they're in agony because the angst in the fic was so good and they want more. But then--something I've noticed--that sort of lingo has a way of slipping into a default response of sorts. And sometimes that makes me question if people really mean it?
This second thing is probably more of a personal thing than a response to your question, but since it's something I've been thinking about lately I hope you don't mind that I brought it up too. I really don't want people to lie to me about my writing.
Not even if it's "to be nice".
Maybe this is in part because I myself find it...difficult to be insincere with ppl, but I don't want false compliments--that's something I tell my friends too. If I write a trope or pairing you don't like? There's never any pressure to read it. I don't expect comments or kudos from anyone. And I'm not someone who in general believes people are insincere--that's not really fair to other people. But everyone has doubts at some point, and I feel like adding to that by straight up lying to make someone feel better just isn't the way to go? If you can't pick out a detail from the fic that you genuinely enjoyed, then maybe keep it to the simple "thanks for sharing!"
So, I guess the TLDR is: keep it short and sweet. keep it encouraging if that's really your goal. (and, if this ever happens to be in reference to something that I specifically have written? please don't feel like you HAVE to say anything at all)
Thanks for the ask!! Sorry I went on for so long LOL💜

Hi there. If you haven’t read my fic Yesterday’s Promise then this won’t mean anything to you unless you just feel like reading an obnoxiously emotional author’s note. Hey, maybe you do! In which case, feel free to tap that read more button which I’ve put in place to save unsuspecting scrollers from my ramblings.
Way back in July 2021, I decided to write a silly little zombie AU. I figured it would be a couple of chapters, maybe 3, 5 at the most, just an exploratory thing really. And because it would be a short piece, I wanted to challenge myself to write it from Scott’s POV because I’d always struggled to capture his voice. Yeah, nice one Kat. How’d that work out for you? Over 1 million words later, I like to think I’m better at writing him now.
By the fourth chapter, I realised that it wasn’t going to be a short fic. I don’t think I ever dreamed of it becoming 126 chapters, but I definitely knew it was going to drag on for a while, so some serious plotting began. Guys. I’m not kidding. I literally had a pinboard of plot points and string linking them together. Wait, where’s that conspiracy theory meme?
Tumblr media
That was me. It’s still me now because I’m plotting the sequel, but back then I was slightly less unhinged. These days I have notecards and scream about character arcs at @tanushakyrano Thanks for putting up with me Cora! I love you!
Anyway, this fic became my baby. It was my emotional outlet and saw me through some dark moments. I dropped out of uni, applied to get a loan for flight school, got rejected, then ended up studying for degree I didn’t really want because I had no idea what else to do. And… I hated it. I projected all my feelings onto Scott (as you do) which helped but honestly? It wasn’t good. But long story short (for once), I survived.
Thanks to you.
I’m not exaggerating. Anyone who has ever clicked kudos or left a comment or interacted with this fic in any way - thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart. If it weren’t for your support, I would never have had the confidence to switch to a writing degree. So, for once I’m not being overdramatic when I say that writing this fic and being supported by you guys has changed my life. This is a wonderful, caring community and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. Love you, Thunderfam!

Fanfiction Writer Bingo
All the cool kids on my dash were doing this, so I decided to give it a go.
I honestly don't know about the multiple kudos since I made an account not long after I started reading on A03 and I'm basically always signed in (multiple kudos aren't technically allowed). As for professional writing - I've been paid for analytical/non-creative writing (not my entire job description, but part of it). It might be fun to actually write/self-publish a book in a few decades (know people who have done it), but I'm nowhere near able to do that anytime soon and don't plan on making a career of it.

List 5 things that make you happy and send this to the last 10 people who liked/reblogged something from you. Get to know your followers and mutuals! (Only if u want of course !!!) ⭐
Oh, this is so nice! Thank you! 💛
Okay, five things that make me happy...
My dog, Wilfred! He just fills my heart with so much joy! I would be so terribly sad and lonely without him, and I hope he knows how much I love him. He's a very good boy - my boon companion!
The Bagginshield fandom! Everyone is so kind, and it's such a fun, welcoming community to be part of! I love seeing new headcanons, reading fic, seeing art, laughing at shitposts and incorrect quotes. You guys are all so clever and funny, and it's just amazing to be part of a fandom that's full of such great folks! I feel so lucky to be included!
People reading my writing 🥹 I would literally die for you guys! I can't tell you how much it means to me whenever I see a new kudos or comment, when someone sends me a message or an ask, makes a post, or even makes artwork (which just seems crazy to me that anyone would do that!!)! It's honestly so gratifying for me, and I cherish every single person who takes the time to read my nonsense!
My garden! I've missed it this last month, what with one thing and another, but I sat out on the patio with a coffee this morning and it was so good to get out there, even just briefly!
Cooking! Since I caught pneumonia I've been living off pot noodles because I haven't had the energy to cook. I actually got up and made a nice breakfast today - just some pancakes and eggs, but it felt so nice to be able to cook for myself again!
This was really such a lovely ask to get and spend time thinking about! Thank you so much for sending it to me!
