I cannot say this with 100% certainty because I have read a very large quantity of fic, but I believe I have only read one where a (main) character got an STI, and it was syphilis in the modern era, so it was embarrassing, but treatable. They're so exquisitely painful. These men. The way they're in love but trapped in a place where they can't be together despite that.

Sometimes, love isn't enough to solve all your problems.

And you see that with them. Joe might love Army but he also values his career and he's still uncomfortable with the strong identity that Army has that he never clicked with and Army is out and used to it and he doesn't see any reason not to right to be yourself.

It's shockingly real and painful and I am sincerely wondering how they end happily and if the show can make it believable.

It hurt so much because we know how much Army loves Joe and we know that Joe cares in return (though, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Army's feeling were stronger) and we know they're both hurting and alone now and they just don't know how to come back together.
