Oh Jason lost all his fighting skills? He doesn't know Bruce or Gotham? Must be some trauma response. No matter, there are no flaws to correct, just a blank canvas to paint on!

Bad times for "Jason" might include: oh no my morals, murder and stuff, is this hell and all these ghosts?, incredible anger issues, a whole cult of ninjas, coming to terms with the situation that went from 0 to 100 (like, seriously, nothing had ever happened to danny before), evil cult leader and the ??? cult leader's daughter that is kinda your mentor now?,

Welcome back to Charlie Has Opinions On Shakespeare, its been a number of years but im back on my bullshit

Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare in the mid to late 1590s, first published in 1597. It’s one of the most well known of all Shakespeare’s plays, with it still being performed and taught in schools. Romeo and Juliet is a tale of lust that went too far, not love.

    Love of the romantic sort isn’t a scientific thing that we can put under a microscope and study. It doesn’t seem to follow any line of logic, which makes it infuriating to me, but alas. However, there are a few things that we can analyze. Dawn Masler, a biologist and author had this to say on the subject, “Love at first sight is not love; it's lust. The neurotransmitter norepinephrine causes those butterfly feelings and sweating palms.” There’s no exact timeline for falling in love, but most psychologists say it takes around four months or so. The story of Romeo and Juliet takes place over the span of roughly four days. Romeo describes love as the following, “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes.” (Shakespeare I.I.186). That sounds much more like lust to me. Most people describe love as a safe feeling, the feeling you would get at home. There’s no fire, no butterflies.

    My second point is admittedly much less thought out than the previous. Romeo is somewhere between 18 and 23, while Juliet is only 13. I know it was a different time in the 1500s so things were different, but my point is they’re teenagers, there are hormones and family influences at play. Juliet is probably in her rebellious phase where she decides she doesn’t want to do anything her father says, so the family enemy looks way more appealing than he actually is. Romeo is heartbroken over Rosaline, so Juliet is the next best thing. If memory serves, he meets Juliet mere minutes after whinging about his sorrow over Rosaline. She's the rebound, that's not love.

i was really surprised because i didn't think i'd like noelle! i reallyyyyyy dislike christmas, so right off the bat i was like "ick.." but she's such a charming character... how could i not love her... she's funny and sweet and really well-written, and ofc her crush on susie is about the cutest thing ive ever seen. her friendship with kris is so precious too... the way they instantly settle into being comfortable with each other, like almost no time has passed. my god. they love each other 😭

umm something that really fascinates me about her is the constant references to angels in regards to her. obviously in snowgrave when that addison calls her Angel, but also during her ferris wheel with susie when she says she'd like to grow angel wings and fly way up high and far away from it all... okay i guess it's not Constant. but it feels really, really purposeful and important

ik it's more likely shading but i like to think the little blue pixels by her hood are meant to be very tiny angel wings... i mean, her dark world outfit is pretty reminiscent of stereotypical (western, christian) angel imagery. a simple long sleeved white robe.......

i'm convinced this will eventually tie in to the angel's heaven catastrophe ralsei talks about in ch1 - it's also worth noting that hometown's church worships some undefined Angel, apparently. remembering all those theories from the days ch1 dropped about Us being the Angel... and Us bringing about the angel's heaven... i feel like that particular conversation has kinda been forgotten because ch2 has thrown so much at us, but. hmmmmm!

(side note: can we also talk about how the roaring and the angel's heaven are absolutely not the same fucking event? ralsei? Ralsei??????)

i can't say for sure like, how. we're too early in. it's just one of those things i have a feeling will eventually be connected. i personally suspect that the angel's heaven is what happens when there's not enough darkness to balance out the light and with every fountain and dark world we destroy, we're one step closer to it. but this doesn't provide any insight into noelle eventually having something to do with it all.

im very curious about the repercussions of a snowgrave route and the divergences we're gonna start seeing as the chapters go on.

that's one of my biggest thoughts about her.. with no conclusion... i could probably sit here and force one out but i think what we saw in chapter 2 is simply the framework for something that is, frankly, unpredictable as of now.

speaking of. she's on the verge of a huge rebellious phase. well i shouldn't say phase - because It's Not A Phase Mom! more like, she's finally going to start growing into herself instead of timidly bowing her head to the expectations of others, whether they be her peers or the adults in her life

this is instigated by the dark world events, regardless of what route the player took. noelle after snowgrave will definitely take a more extreme approach to her teenage rebellion, though

she and kris are like... soulmate besties. it's like they were born from the same stardust, or some corny shit like that. no matter how much time passes and no matter how much they seem to drift apart, put them in a room and within 5 minutes they'll be laughing and joking like nothing has changed at all. they'll always Get each other. they both know this

i dont watch horror movies i dont have a good tolerance for that so i dont have any examples, but i think her favorites are the ones with practical effects and especially sick ass puppet work... i think she actually grows up and pursues making that kinda stuff for horror films and Maybe other genres... mostly horror

she and berdly are also really close. it's so fucked up that their care for each other shines through most clearly in a snowgrave route but they Are very good friends. they go on morning runs together ^^ (im Convinced berdly is the sporty type of nerd and in my brain he's on the cross country team too)

i feel that the arc should be taken for what it is: an impressionable teenager who has lost everybody. i feel that it was a great way to take ciri’s character in. when we meet her, we have this prissy princess who has a strong personality but little to back it up because she’s just a child. then then experiences a horrible trauma, one that scars her for life. she could have perished, but she survives, and under the training from both of her parents, she matures and learns self-discipline. but then she loses everything, again. and this time, in constrast, she does not have anyone to rely upon and guide her. so, she buckles and becomes the opposite of what her parents guided her to be. lost and alone, she turns to the company of cruel banditry and adopts their ways of dealing with things. she uses the skills she learned to defend herself in attack against others. then, when she is confronted with evil, she turns from this self and tries to chase what she had learned in the beginning from her parents, and it’s left ambiguous as to if she ever achieved it again. 

it’s a fantastic concept of a character arc and i feel it goes under the radar because she is just a child in the beginning of it, so people mistake her as not being the focus of the series. but slowly, she gains agency in time of contempt, and then you realize that she really is the point of the series.

so, it’s a great concept. but how about how it was executed? i feel like it was done about 90% well, but there were parts that made me cringe. 

to begin with, let’s consider ciri’s character and how it is treated a little more:

ciri already exhibits many of the traits that came out in her during her time with the rats. when she meets geralt, she threatens to chop of his head. then in time of contempt, she has that vision in the korath desert about sending all of her loved ones to the gallows. i think there was good buildup to her being as horrible as we see her in the rats arc. 

not only her pieces in the story, but others speaking ABOUT her; triss in blood of elves having the vision where ciri is dubbed the elder blood, dandelion’s chapter prelude in time of contempt which is an excerpt from half a century of poetry where he says that she just looked like a regular girl, but no one could have ever predicted what she would bring upon them. 

and geralt and ciri having that argument in blood of elves when they disagree about the purpose of a sword. geralt sees it as a burden, because it was placed upon him without a choice as a child. it is something he carried out of obligation. ciri sees it as freedom because it is something she learned to make her feel strong and confident and to heal from her trauma at cintra. she sees it as the solution to her problems, revenge will solve everything. though we see her deviate from this mindset in time of contempt when she refuses to kill cahir in cold blood, it comes back to her in the form of plain all-out violence. 

it’s not revenge against just the black knight who has wronged her and haunted her nightmares, because he never existed. without someone to direct her anger to now, she is taking revenge out on THE WHOLE WORLD for hurting her. she explains so in tower of the swallow when she speaks with vysogota, that not only her parents who she had found and had a chance to love, but all of her ideals and values had abandoned her. it’s the perfect setup. she has clear character motivations. 

i used to be upset because i simplified this in my mind to being just sapkowski saying that revenge is bad and trauma makes you a bad person, but it’s really not that at all. instead, i feel like he is arguing that BLIND revenge on a person is a bad thing. cahir didn’t deserve death at thanedd, so ciri spared him in mercy which was good. she thought before she killed. but once she started taking her pain out on the world, the innocent, the scared just as she was, that was wrong. trauma didn’t make her into a bad person, she just fell into bad ways because she was experiencing such a harsh life and was surrounded by bad influences. in the end, you get to decide if she ever became a better person after this and healed/redeemed herself. 

so the fact that the rats existed is good. it helps ciri develop as a character.

something that makes me cringe is how ciri/mistle was treated. i read in an interview that was translated on reddit that sapkowski wanted to invert the trope of the princess/Really Important Superpower Girl always falling in love with a knight/a bunch of male love interests, so he said, surprise, she’s a lesbian. this i think is a really good idea, as a lesbian i support this and think it is a good inversion of the stale trope. what i do not appreciate is almost everything about how it was handled.

for starters, let’s think about mistle’s character. she used to be a noble, but then became a bandit so she could continue to live a life of luxury. what? that is a very poor representation of why crime happens. the rats pretty much all follow this idea of robbing so they can have a little luxury, which is... just a little illogical. i much more appreciate what he did with angouleme’s character, where she and her fellow orphans became bandits out of necessity because they were escaping from evil and needed to survive, and then faced many hardships. i think it was meant to be this way though, because the rats are pretty much meant to be really dislikable and have few redeeming qualities.

i don’t think the way ciri joins the rats is horrible, i think it was one of her lowest points, and it makes sense for her to be at her lowest, most desperate point when she, a former princess, joins banditry. but ok. im gonna talk about the thing that no one ever wants to talk about

why did there have to be a r*pe scene, sapkowski??? why????? this was so unnecessary and stupid and out of place! ciri is like 15 here too! it’s just like ughhhh... i get that it was intended to be more trauma for ciri (because she totally doesn’t have enough of that already /sarcasm) but it was really... just gross to read... even as a 17 yo reading it, i felt gross and skipped a lot. i feel like sapkowski wanted to create very unredeemable characters, and he succeeded with this, but it was just a little much. but more importantly, this sets ciri and mistle’s relationship up to be horrifically unhealthy. 

and when i think about that interview i read where he said he wanted to invert the tropes and make ciri a lesbian, this is what hurts, because he could have actually had her have a healthy lesbian relationship, but instead the lesbian relationship was predatory and gross, and even more, the only time we see her in love with a woman is during this arc. this arc, when she is not only misguided and impressionable, but cruel, vicious, and being a horrible person. then it’s suggested she begins to like the knights that sapkowski was supposedly trying to not make her fall in love with (this is why the interview confuses me) in lady of the lake when she admires cahir’s eyes and has that awkward run-in with galahad (and in something ends, something begins when she fights alongside galahad and sits next to him at the wedding feast, etc). in the end, it doesn’t come off as bisexuality, instead it just comes off as “when you’re evil and killing people, you are a nasty lesbian,” and “when you are smart and have redeemed yourself to fight for the forces of good, you fall in love with men.” it’s weird how the only time she is in love with a woman is when she is in her “rebellious teenager phase,” it sounds like when some women say, “i was a lesbian in high school/college.” it doesn’t help that practically the only other lesbian in the series is philippa eilhart, who devoted her time to trying to abduct ciri away from her parents so she could use her as a political pawn. so yeah, it’s horrible representation. the OTHER thing i hate is that the gender non-conforming lesbian, mistle, is like the evil one who kills and r*pes. like, seriously? what could have been done to make this better would be to have other highly-coded lesbian characters (cough, cough... milva barring... cough) be butch lesbians, to show representation that isn’t wholly violent. it’s also because mistle is the one that initiates the relationship with ciri, that mistle is the homophobic ‘predatory lesbian’ trope who ‘turned ciri lesbian’ lol. it’s pretty fucked up.

what could have been done to make it better would be to just make ciri have a consentful relationship with mistle (and lower their age gap, i think mistle is around 19???) and for ciri to have feelings for other women or admire women’s looks outside of this time of her life. i think it was a nice/funny touch when she was stunned by margarita laux-antille’s body in time of contempt, but i am wary of this too because i don’t know if sapkowski’s intention here was to just say that margarita was sexy or that ciri was a gay child lol.

i feel like mistle sexually assaulting ciri was a later addition to the story, because they interact pretty healthily otherwise? it doesn’t seem like mistle is overly manipulating ciri in like, any other scene. in something ends, something begins, ciri speaks of her in tones of respect and like, wanting revenge because she loved her, and in the saga she wants revenge for all the rats but specifically for mistle. it’s just super weird to have what started their relationship be sexual assault, because it just makes the whole thing rotten. 

i feel the rats overall got very little development and time as characters, which is probably for the best because they really can be summarized with ease as bad influences to ciri, there’s not much else needed to elaborate upon. i don’t feel mad about not getting a lot of time with the rats. baptism of fire largely follows geralt and the company he is accruing, who actually have like, backstories and drama and things. 

as for the rats’ deaths, this is a parallel between ciri and geralt. when the rats died *, i knew that the hansa was fated to die, as well. geralt and ciri both lose their companies that influenced them heavily in contrasting manners (geralt became a better person and let people into his life and took responsibility, ciri absorbed cruelty and violent ways of venting her aggression and feelings of being wronged). sapkowski went total gore-filled anime scene when depicting their deaths, and really set up bonhart as the absolute vilest antagonist. of course it was horrific, this is an adult’s fantasy series after all, and even though it was nauseating to read, i don’t think they could have died in any other way. they did not have noble deaths, for they were not noble people. and sapkowski depicted violent death in a very realistic way, that is what slaughter is like.

i think ciri mourning the rats even though they were bad people is appropriate. just because they were bad people and influenced her in bad ways does not necessarily mean that she realizes this and views them poorly. if you read her statement to vysogota in time of contempt about when all her values failed her but she found support in the most surprising of places, it makes sense that she would care for them even if they were horrible.

* even though it was already insinuated to me that the hansa would die because i just began blood & wine when i started to read the witcher books (i mean, milva and cahir are not mentioned by geralt & regis within the beginning scenes of blood & wine (i had yet to meet angouleme in tos) so it is suggested that they died). 

TLDR: remove the r*pe scene and it’s fine...?

an afterthought and footnote: that scene with hotspurn was NOT necessary. or more specifically, the idea that a 15/16 yo girl could catch feelings for some 30-yo man and have those feelings deeply and explicitly elaborated upon is really stupid, but more importantly, out of place in the narrative, it was completely useless. it’s creepy and gross.

He has a bit of an attitude problem, all this dog ever does is talk back to me. I swear when i tell him to stop barking he mocks me.

The story behind how I got my first pets is actually pretty funny to me. My parents had just gotten a divorce and were still very much in the petty phase that follows. My mom decided to get a cat since she knows that they trigger my dads asthma, and my dad decided to get a puppy because my mom hates dogs with a passion. They figured the animals would be somekind of statemwnt i guess. I still have both of these pets, and my moms house is strictly cats and my dads is just my dog Hermes.

Hermes is a doggy school drop out, he wasn't listening and never learnt how to be social with others. Even though he can't necessarily talk, you can tell when he's being sassy. He gets an attitude and ignores you if you come home smelling like someone else's pets. He'll throw a tantrum and bark if someone looks at him the wrong way, he's kinda crazy.

He's very much a part of our family, he eats dinner with us, he lives with us, he keeps us company. Its hard to imagine what itd be like without him, but i'm not in denial i know that time is coming sooner than later. I'd just prefer not to think about it. On a more morbid note my dads friend has a farm in mirabel where he raises huskies and australian shepherds, so its not like i won't have another dog after. Not that id ever be able to replace my dog though.

This dog has lived with me in LaSalle and Verdun with no problems. But when we moved to chateauguay, he starts going through some sort of rebellious phase. Maybe it was some sort of teenage rebellion i thought to myself, that's if dog years are even real anyways. But then i got to thinking, my dog should be a wise 70 year old in dog years by now, not a teenage delinquent.

I remember this one time i clipped him onto his leash and then when he made the usual run for it i tugged him back towards me. Well the leash is somehow in my hand and the dog is already halfway down the damn street. Now im chasing him into some dudes backyard at 2am because i didn't put his leash on the right loop. I'm faking him left and right like i was a basketball player or something. And its not like this is a one time thing either. This dog is an escape artist sometimes. Thank god my street is pretty peaceful.

My dog is turning 10 this year, he's actually only a year younger than my brother. He's getting old and grey but he still has the energy and strength of a puppy. I'd say i wish you could meet him and see why i love him so much, but he'd probably try to eat you, or maybe he'd like you more than he likes me. You never know with this one.

        ♡        loretta rose dickens was born the youngest of six children in the smokey mountains of east tennessee. to say she was the apple of her parents’ eyes would have been an understatement. despite the fact that her father’s career as a coal miner didn’t provide them with the highest income, they made the best of the life they had, and her parents always did whatever they could to give the children the whole world.         ♡        lo first discovered her love for music in church. from the moment she was able, she sang along to every song from her seat in the worn down pews. until she was old enough to join the choir, then everyone was singing along with her. she was a natural, and was doted on by all the other members for her talents.          ♡        while her passion for music never waned, it never occurred to lo that it could be a career. but soon enough her parents and their friends were encouraging her to perform more publicly than just the church. by the age of eleven, lo was featured on a number of local tv programs and radio shows, and by twelve she and her mother were signing contracts to record her first few singles. suddenly, she was being played on country music radio stations across the country. it was all uphill from there; suddenly she was a teenager and going a few hours away to nashville once a week to record music while she finished school. after graduating, she moved to nashville full time, and lived there for a couple of years before bigger opportunities had her packing up and taking the cross-country trip to los angeles.          ♡        since her move to la, lo has been experimenting with her music a bit outside of the country bubble. these days, most of her tunes have more pop-sounding melodies, but she never forgets to add her own southern twist. her aesthetic and music mixes elements of classic country with the gaudy, over-the-top elements that characterize the era. Wow okay now where to begin !

Micah is the daughter of a famous chef in new york, owning a restaurant called Arian and her mom is a business woman owning her own brand of home stuff, think of martha stewart and that’s how her mom is. Her dad is like... think of Gordon Ramsay with his tv shows and such. Her mom stayed at home with her until Micah entered high school.

Her parents named her Micah so she can have a gender neutral name so she wouldn’t be objectified based on just by having a female name but it’s funny because she likes to be called Meeks which is cute and girly hahaha

Micah actually studied drama at NYU and has graduated but after a messy year ( i’ll address this in a bit ! ) she decided to go back to school to forget about the year she just had. 

Needless to say, Micah grew up comfortable since her parents had money but she always felt grounded since her parents made sure her life was super normal. Micah is pretty much a nerd too, she loves books, movies and baking. When she’s nervous she can cook a whole home cooked meal. 

Her dad has taught her how to cook since she was young and she really values that. Her mom always tries to make her go out there but Micah just likes staying in and watching netflix, and then studying. She’s a good student, she’s such a nerd that you’ll probably catch her sleeping on her books in the library. 

Doesn’t mean she didn’t have a phase where everything just went to shit when she was a teenager. She used to be out late, smoke a lot of weed and go to parties. She body image issues, she doesn’t see herself as pretty, and struggled with anorexia/bulimia, etc. :S my poor baby, but no one really saw it since she did cook a lot and taste her food. Ofc tho close family and friends know about it.

It wasn’t until she decided she really wanted to act that she got the rebellious side of her out, so she went on to do drama in nyu at 18 ! (the self hate....it’s a work in progress but she’s trying!)

A lot of people know her for her smile and how bubbly she is. Micah is the last person you would ever think is fake. She’s highkey genuine and sweet. She makes cheesy jokes, loves to dance and carelessly play the piano. She’s not the type to be into big time brands either, her mom literally got her to say the names right hahaha. 

So the big thing uuuh, she fell in love with someone she thought was going to be there for her for the rest of her life, turns out it didn’t turn out that way. So she was with this guy, and they were in love with one another, moved in and everything. They were childhood friends and well it grew into more! So uh, she got pregnant, and if you know her, she always says she doesn’t want kids, but she accepted it! She got excited, her hopes were up, and even if she was worried she always felt safe with Raf.

Now the bad thing.... she ended up giving birth to a stillborn child and it literally broke her for a while. Her ex dealt with it his way, and meeks just didn’t want to bother him with her own problems though he always expressed it was okay. 

They broke up is the point, and that broke her even more that she had to leave without letting anyone know. going to college (aGAIN) is just kind of a fresh new start.

Meeks got into the habit of drinking...alcohol a lot, it’s just something she does now, and doesn’t know where she is in life kind of thing,

so most of you should know the rough outline of jellybean ! tldr : jughead’s baby sister. i tried to keep her quite closely aligned to what little we know of her in the show while adding my own spin, so ------ we’ll see how it goes !

so jellybean was born in riverdale to gladys & fp jones as forsythia jones. as for where she got the name jellybean ------ idk @ jones family help me out here !! maybe it’s because she was jellybean-shaped in the first ultrasound, maybe she was always reaching for or shoplifting jellybeans as a kid. point is, the name stuck. some may still refer to her as jb ( rebellious ten year old phase ) or thia ( five year old princess phase )

super smiley kid, talking a mile a minute, ball of sunshine in hand-me-down sneakers & clothes that are too big. probably hung out with the serpents a lot due to her parentage ?? idk man

anyway when she was about eleven or twelve the jones family kind of went to shit & her mom chose to move out to toledo, bringing jellybean with her. she protested the move quite a lot, adamant not to be split from jughead and her dad, but in the end she was young & scared & it was EASIER to move with her mom.

thus, toledo, where she was kind of forced to grow up fast, without her brother. here, she kind of grew out of that ‘ eternal sunshine ’ phase & became more akin to your typical teenager. that being said, she is a jones, so she developed quite a bit of spunk & a big personality while she was at it. she took up part time jobs after school to help mom & fund her growing vinyl collection. she was the sort of kid who loved old movies & started school protests for the tiniest reasons.

moved back to riverdale when she was fifteen or sixteen, much to her joy !! she attended riverdale high where she was determined to follow in jughead’s footsteps of creating trouble ( as unintentional as his might be ) . 

definitely an arts student !! she’s definitely into film producing or directing & knows exactly where she wants to go. she’s hoping for a ba at carson college, however she’s tight on money ( another jones trait ) , which is why she’s gunning for a scholarship chance, with the hopes to ‘ make something of herself ’. despite being constantly told to get the hell out of riverdale & thrown condescending lines such as ‘ what’s a nice girl like you doing in a town like this ’, the southside is all jb has ever really known & she is reluctant to leave it or pursue bigger things. money issues are a problem, but mostly they’re a front for her fear of leaving everything behind.

she was like ‘ uhhh college , who is that ?? i deleted her from my contacts month ago ! ‘ whenever asked about it and pretty much accepted she wasnt going anywhere in life ( even tho she has such an interest in art and shii )queue rebellious teenage phase of getting drunk every weekend and smoking weed heheheh shes SOOOO CRazy !

alex didnt rly get out of her rebellious phase but now it jus kind of a life style ??? like shes kween of impulse !!! any crazy decision she has made is always in the moment and could sometimes lead to bad endings, though that doesn’t stop her now regardless of how many times her dumb ideas have gotten her in trouble

she loves and supports her friends so much crying face emoji <3 but alex herself literally doesnt know how to confront her own damn feelings bc shes a chismosa

^ also , even though she doesn’t like expressing herself and acknowledging her feelings , when she needs to let things out , it’s generally in a very explosive or mood swing-y way. she can lash out over little things if something has been building up but it’s not something that happens often + she always regrets it afterwards bc she both verbally attacked someone most likely innocent and bc that person knows how she’s feeling

oh ho ho okay (i am quite literally rubbing my hands together bc ARGUMENTS R MY SHIT)

so like??  kara and lena dont ever rlly Fight, u know??  no big blow outs, particularly after the kids come along like they bicker sometimes and have deeper arguments but there’s no big blow up bc that’s not healthy and they know it, recognize it.  the few times they’ve had a Big Fight were p early in their relationship when lena was still sort of self-sabotaging and kara was sort of doing the same tbh but then they developed the ever helpful tool of ~healthy communication~ so when they argue, it’s usually p tame

that said, they DO fight sometimes and they dont like......go out of their way to hide it??  bc like its a reality of relationships, you argue sometimes, and they want their kids to see that it happens and that you still love each other at the end of them and they want them to see how to deal with relationship issues healthily??  that’s a big thing for lena tbh, bc she had to learn it all when she was an adult, never had any reference point for what a healthy long term relationship was supposed to look like until kara, rlly, so she rlly wants their kids to know what a solid, healthy, happy relationship looks like

so it usually goes down like this: whatever small disagreements they’ve been having (usually over the same subject or maybe a series of related topics) will kind of build up and then sometimes its kara that starts it by rolling her eyes when lena starts in on it or sometimes its lena snapping at kara but eventually it Starts and it will last for days at a time sometimes bc they both think they’re right or if they know they’re wrong, they’re not willing to admit it Right Then but anyway it will last for a while (their record is three weeks, it happened right after they found out lena was pregnant with finn, it was A Mess), but like??  they still love each other??  kara still makes lena’s coffee in the mornings and lena still picks up a pint of kara’s favorite ice cream bc she saw they were out the other day and like??  tbh thats what the kids take away from it most

but yeah, so they argue in front of the kids sometimes but they never let it get ugly, always know when to say we need to step away from this and come back later, so they will and they’ll cool off and they’ll resolve whatever it is they’re dealing with

and it’s mostly just background noise for the kiddos??  like they barely notice it bc their moms dont rlly act any different when they’re in the middle of a fight, like yeah maybe they’re not as gross as usually, maybe the kiddos dont walk in on their moms making out in the kitchen, but thats like??  it??

one of maia’s friend’s parents fight a lot, like loud screaming matches, and one time maia’s staying over when they get into it and she’s so shocked?? ?  like holy shit why are they yelling at each other

she goes home the next day and just hugs her moms like holy shit she never realized how good she and finn and stella have it, like she can’t imagine living with screaming matches every other day

NOW WHEN THE KIDDOS FIGHT WITH THEIR MOMS??  strap in friend

so each kid has their own style of arguing with their moms??  and it varies between kara and lena too like maia fights with kara one way but lena another ANYWAY

so finn isnt v loud when he’s upset??  he rlly isnt and he shies away from the term fighting even, prefers disagreement instead, so like when (on v v few occasions) he gets into an argument with his moms, its always p quiet??  and usually resolved by the end of the day tbh like he’s one of those ppl that Cannot go to bed with shit left unresolved, he has a thing abt starting every day with a clean slate (this occasionally means some long nights)

like the biggest things he ever argues with kara abt are like his willingness to cover up whatever maia’s gotten up to and the fact that he is complicit in a lot of kind of shady stuff his sisters get up to when they kind of become vigilantes and he’s had a total of maybe two arguments with lena and both of them were during and about his one rebellious phase where he broke curfew a few times and gave his moms some scares by letting his phone die bc he was feeling ~reckless~

his arguments with kara tend to last p long??  like days/weeks sometimes bc they are rlly a lot alike but in different ways??  like finn has a slightly narrowed moral compass i guess, where he can excuse what his sisters do bc theyre his sisters and they’re doing whatever it is for good reason but kara’s like??  no it’s still dangerous and not well planned and also illegal but neither of them ever yell (quite honestly kara and lena have like never yelled at their kiddos except when they’re in imminent danger??) but they dont rlly raise their voices so there’s just a lot of stony silence until someone (usually stella) sort of shoves finn’s shoulder and says you dont have to defend us, what we did was fucked up or approaches kara and is like hey, dont be angry with him

and then when he goes to apologize or she comes to him they both end up crying.  listen, they’re a soft ass family ok tears happen A Lot

the two times finn has argued with lena were both v short, happened v late at night bc she stayed up until he came home and both included the phrase (from finn) i get to be a kid too, you know and both times that final phrase made lena stop dead and just.  give up??  like god, he’s right, he’s taken on a lot of responsibility in their family, so lena just sort of gathers him up and hugs him rlly tight and is like we’ll talk about extending your curfew but please don’t ever scare your mother and i like that ever again and finn is like ???  ok???  

for sure figured he was getting grounded for weeks but instead he ended up with an extended curfew and like........one weekend of being grounded 

MAIA OH MY GOD maia fights with kara a lot when she’s older, bc she has like??  a v different moral code i guess like do no harm but take no shit kind of goes out the window, like maia’s taken this stance that the second u threaten her ppl, she’s well within her rights to beat your ass and she with lena she argues a lot during this one earlier period in her life where she gets into some bad situations and lena’s like ???  sweetheart what are you doing and maia’s sort of like GOD I CAN MAKE MY OWN CHOICES IM MATURE and lena’s trying v hard not to let it turn into a fight but, well, maia is trying v hard to turn it into a fight

so like her arguing with kara tends to happen more as maia’s an adult tbh and it sometimes escalates to full yelling bc at a certain point she becomes kara’s colleague at the deo and when she does stupid shit, she’s endangering a lot of ppl, including her siblings and her moms and herself 

meanwhile she fights with lena a lot as a teenager over stupid shit rlly like it’s not always abt deep shit but when it is it gets rlly uncomfortable bc lena hates arguing with her kids, she does, and maia’s not like finn, won’t ever get to the heart of why she’s angry at lena so it’s just??  it’s messy and bad and lena makes sure that maia’s left the house before she starts crying and maia makes sure she’s well out of the city before she starts crying and finn and stella and kara usually run damage control for them bc otherwise they’d be in this holding pattern of just sort of being like we’re okay.......for NOW and then having more and more arguments bc they never get to the heart of the matter and yeah, maia feels rlly guilty when she’s older abt how she treated lena as a teenager

and there have been times where she fights with both her moms at the same time, like there’s this period in her life (like around her sophomore/junior year of high school??) where she gets into a p bad situation that she refuses to let her moms know abt so they only see her cutting class and her grades falling and her like yelling at her siblings so they sit her down abt it and it results in several Big Arguments that end p badly and damage everyone’s trust for a little while bc now kara and lena are like??  holy shit what is she into???  and maia feels like her moms dont ~understand~ even though they legitimately would if she would just tell them whats going on and she feels like she can’t tell them so it’s a Mess for a while

stella refuses to argue with her moms.  she just Wont do it.  she rlly kind of refuses to fight with anyone she cares abt bc she can feel what they feel and that fucks with how she feels and idk it’s weird, sometimes other ppls emotions influence her or sometimes her emotions influence others.  bc of that, she tries to avoid it if she can but obviously it happens sometimes

this is her MO; she never lets it turn into a real argument, she’ll just like.....walk into room with whichever mom she’s irritated with or both if that’s the situation and just be v blunt like im angry that you wouldnt let me go out with ari last night and then she retreats before they can say anything else.  then, probably a couple hours later, she comes back and says another thing like it wasn’t fair because you let finn do the same thing and i feel like you treat me differently than him or maia and then retreats.  and then FINALLY  she’s kind of gotten a hold on her own emotions and feels like she’ll actually be able to speak with her moms without losing control and then its not even an argument so much as a debate rlly

like the weird stop start pattern is how she has to go about it so she knows that no one’s emotions are influencing anyone else’s???  like that way she knows she’s not making kara or lena angrier and she knows that they’re not making her any angrier, that whatever they bring to the table is their own

her moms thinks its rlly cute and also theyre rlly sad that she has to like.....live like this??  like she’s so terrified of ever taking away someone’s free will that she’ll just drag out a highly uncomfortable experience (stella Hates confrontation and, if given the opportunity, would probably just get it all done and over with in one go but sadly that is not an option for her) just to make sure she’s not doing anything wrong irt other ppl

she tends to argue with kara more??  bc thats who, in general, does actually treat her a bit differently bc she’s the one that’s like painfully aware that stella’s not kryptonian.  like and that’s not a problem obviously!!  kara loves her just the same as she loves finn and maia but it’s just scary for kara bc there’s a certain level of comfort in knowing finn and maia are stronger and faster and virtually invulnerable, and it’s terrifying that her youngest, tiniest child isnt.  like even just physically??  stella is so much smaller than her siblings and that’s just like a visual representation of their differences and its scares kara so so much every time stella walks out the door.  so she’s the one that generally is like hey maybe wear flats, you dont want to break your ankle or you cant go out in this weather, you’ll catch your death and stella’s like ???  you dont treat maia and finn like theyre babies and she gets rlly angry abt stuff like that bc she knows she’s different??  but she doesnt like getting reminded 

her arguments with lena arent even arguments like they rlly are essentially debates over rlly small insignificant stuff, like it rarely gets heated, feelings are never hurt.  that said, she’s had like one Major argument with lena and thats like when stella starts doing her own vigilante shit, like learns jiu jitsu and krav maga and gets maia’s best friend beth (a tech genius interning at l-corp) to help her with the gadgetry and lena’s the first to find out and she’s like No, no you’re not doing this, this isn’t safe and stella’s like technically i am an adult so yeah i am doing this and its more a battle of wills??  like there’s no out and out confrontation but it’s a weird few months until there is

NOW WHEN THE KIDDOS FIGHT

they rlly dont fight that much but usually its between finn and maia, with stella and their moms playing peace maker/referee.  like.....thats their dynamic, their built in system.  finn and maia’s inherent morality go against each other like at nearly every turn bc finn is such a pacifist and maia rlly rlly isnt, like even from when they were little that was like the main source of conflict for them

like finn always feels like he needs to go along with whatever maia’s up to just to minimize damage??  keep collateral damage low, u know??  and maia’s fine with that, likes having her brother with her as back up, likes not feeling so alone in her rage, but he’s kind of useless help, always standing behind her and telling her to leave it, walk away, it’s not worth it but like it fucking is??  to her???  

they do get into screaming matches sometimes.  like......they’ll fly up out of sight of the city and just rip into each other and whenever they come back home, they just will not look at each other for a while.  and stella’s left adrift bc they’re some of her favorite ppl and holy shit, what if this is the fight that rlly breaks them all apart??  so she runs between them, trying for damage control, but she’s not v good at it bc she’s way too invested, soaks up all their emotions like a sponge and comes away from it worse for wear

and like kara and lena are always on top of the situation, u know??  like they may not always know what their kiddos are fighting abt bc their arguments tend to wander to different things so what they may hear abt may not be what started it, but they always know when they’re fighting and usually they’ll each take on one of them to talk to, exchange notes, make a plan, help them figure out a compromise

and best yet, they know when sometimes they just need to step back and let them work it out for themselves???  like they know when to back away and when to pull stella away bc, bless her, she’s still desperately trying to fix everything bc its wildly uncomfortable for her whenever there’s tension in the house, so sometimes the best thing is just to distract her with other stuff and let finn and maia work whatever it is out between themselves (and they always do like, at the end of the day, they love each other a lot and rlly arent ever abt to let anything come between them)

on the occasions that stella’s ever fighting with someone, it’s usually maia and its usually that theyre both kind of jealous of the other??  like maia is everything stella wishes she was, all tall and gorgeous and smart and kryptonian but stella isnt angry all the time, doesnt have this rage eating away at her, can live her life without wanting to put holes in walls every day and so they get jealous of the other and the get irritated and they get fucking angry and maia’s so angry, stella can’t help but absorb some of that, even if she’s being careful

they mostly fight during high school??  like thats when its just the two of them in the house, after finn’s off at college, that’s when there’s no buffer between them and that’s when stella so desperately wants to be like her big sister, that’s when maia doesnt want to have to take over for finn as stella’s protector, wants to live her own life for once goddammit

and like???  it’s kind of out of nowhere.  like kara and lena dont see it coming but one day kara hears maia screaming and is like fuck and flies home and is like ????  when its just her and stella, red faced and breathing hard and stella looks like she’s on the verge of tears and maia looks as if she wants nothing more than to just leave and she tries to play peace maker but it only seems to make it worse bc both girls feel like she’s taking the other’s side and they both storm off and kara’s still just sort of ??????  what the actual fuck ???

they dont fight often, but they do actually play dirty bc they both know where to poke and prod and press to hurt the most and they rlly dont ever Truly work through it until they’re like full grown adults, like stella’s in college and maia’s grown and living in opal city and stella calls her when she’s like real fucking wasted and is like hoooooly shit we’re fucked up maia, we’re real shitty to each other??  but we shouldnt be because i love you, i love you so much and i miss you and did you know jungle juice is really strong???  its so strong maia.  maia did i tell you i love you because i do a lot

maia’s sort of freaked out by the confession/apology and she’s freaked out by the way stella’s slurring her words and she almost just calls kara to go get her but this is her baby sister and she called her??  she called maia, not finn, not kara, not lena, she called maia, so maia grabs a comfy sweater and hauls ass to stella’s university and just bundles her baby sister up and gives her a lot of water to drink and stays with her that night and helps her with her hangover the next day and stella’s sort of shocked she came (stella also doesnt rlly remember her phone call but u know, semantics) but then maia hangs around until stella’s like a little less hungover and she makes them dinner and is like so, we should talk and then they do !!  and they actually finally are truthful with one another, finally say what they mean and its rlly good and stella’s so so happy bc she has her big sister back and maia’s over the fucking moon like she missed stella so much, remembers when they were little and she would braid stella’s hair and show her how to balance on a skateboard

PERSONALITY:

Hard working. Mina has never half assed anything in her life, being very much from the school of ‘if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right’. She never hesitates to get stuck in to a task, whether that’s in her daily life or her vigilante work. In fact, she flounders if she doesn’t have a task to work on, and very much likes to keep herself busy. Even if something is onerous or unpleasant, she’ll never complain.

Optimistic. Attitude is central to Mina’s life philosophy, and she tries her best to never let anything get her down. When her mother was training her to fight, she always focused on the fact that the criminal you are fighting is probably the hero of their own story. This taught Mina to be sympathetic even towards her foes, and she never treats anyone poorly without very good cause. It would be easy to let life wear her down, confronted with as many villains as there are in Newhaven, but she makes a conscious effort not to let that happen and always remain upbeat.

Demanding. Having always been pushed to her limits, Mina sees nothing wrong with pushing others to theirs. This mostly comes out with her clients at the gym, who receive so much constructive criticism it tends to feel like plain criticism. It comes from a good place but can often make her difficult to be around; she’s the first to criticise something of poor quality, even if it’s something so simple as her latte in the morning. For her, perfection is the only standard worth presenting. For the barista, they’re probably just a kid in college trying to make some extra spending money, wondering why this customer is so aggressive about something so minor. It’s borne from a place of wanting to see people achieve their potential, and she means well by it, but can often come off as abrasive.

Obsessive. Once Mina sets her mind to something, she focuses on little else - it goes beyond dedication or passion. She has very little time for hobbies in her life, and consequently very few friends, as she feels that any time spent lounging around in a bar or watching a movie is time wasted. Should she accidentally sleep in for an hour or spend too long socialising with a client, she berates herself for it and even finds herself getting anxious that she should be doing something. There’s a fear deep within her that if she lets down her guard, something terrible will happen.

Restrained. Mina is extremely good at resisting temptation, and has excellent self control - you’ll never see her grabbing a doughnut on her way to work. This is generally viewed as a good thing, because she keeps herself in excellent shape, completes any tasks she sets herself, and never does anything she may later regret. On the flip side, however, she never allows herself to indulge in anything, and can often be seen as a bit of a wet blanket among her colleagues. The concept of treating herself is pretty foreign to Mina, and though she doesn’t see this as a bad thing, she will likely regret not allow herself to enjoy life a little more.

Emotional. Although she was raised a fighter, she was always taught the importance of self expression as a form of control: if you allow yourself to lock all your emotions away, they may burst out at an inopportune moment and cause you to make mistakes. Consequently, Mina tends to be very open with her thoughts and feelings - whether for good or for bad.

BIOGRAPHY: The year was 1693, and Moon Ji Su knew her life would soon be over. The people of Salem had been murmuring about her for weeks - an outsider, a stranger - and so she took her thirteen year old daughter, Yu Na, into the forest. There, she pressed a silver token in the shape of a circle with a line through it into Yu Na’s hands and told her to hold it close in times of need. That night, Ji Su was tried as a witch and burned. The people came for Yu Na next, because the daughter of a witch must surely be tainted by association, and Yu Na clutched the silver token in her palm with closed eyes as she whispered a prayer. She and her mother had travelled such a long way, thinking they could begin a new, better life in America. They were wrong.

When the people laid their hands on her, she fought back and found in herself a strength greater than that of any human; she fought them all off and fled into the night to start her life anew for the second time. That silver token that bestowed the strength upon her, shaped in the alchemical symbol for salt, was a gift and she meant not to waste it. She travelled, and fought on behalf of the persecuted. When she settled down later in life, she passed her talisman down to her daughter and taught her of its strength. A Moon woman must always hold this talisman, she said, and she must keep her own name even in marriage because they must uphold her mother’s legacy.

Such is the story that Mi na’s mother told her, just as her own mother had told her. There is little evidence of Moon Ji Su’s existence, and it is likely that the story has been added to and altered and embroidered over the years - frankly, Mina suspects there weren’t even any Korean women in Salem at that time, and the whole thing is a fairytale - but every Moon woman knows it. As was dictated by her lineage, Mina - who has forgone the space in her name to better fit in - was raised to be a fighter: enrolled in jiu-jitsu and krav maga classes the moment she could walk, combat was all she knew. And while she trained, her mother donned her costume and went out under cover of night to fight for the little people. Justice has always been central to the path of the Moon women: never fight without cause, never harm a downed opponent, never sit idly by while someone gets hurt.

Mina worshipped her mother; she was the strongest woman in the world, and when she turned eighteen and inherited the talisman of strength, she would do anything to emulate her. Her life has followed the same route of all the Moon women: train until you’re of age, inherit the talisman and the identity of Haetae, and then find somewhere to call home. Brattleboro in Vermont has lived under the protection of Haetae for decades; now, with Mina behind the mask, Haetae has moved to Newhaven. Mina has read many stories in the news of the conditions there, and her strong sense of justice told her that this was the place she must protect.

What she didn’t anticipate was how much she would struggle living alone. She thought she had been raised strong and independent, but actually she feels like a child, lost, without her mother. Throughout her younger years, Mina had spent most of her time with her mother. She’d gone to school to get a normal education too, of course, and made plenty of friends thanks to her upbeat nature, but her mother would always be her best friend. Even as a teenager she bypassed the rebellious ‘I hate my mom’ phase. The understanding that your mother wants you to do your best and be your best goes quite a long way in developing a good relationship. Any vulnerability she feels because of this, you would never suspect. Mina works hard to keep a positive attitude, as much for herself as anyone else, and though she allows herself to feel sad, what she won’t allow is for it to get to her down.

Now she works by day as a freelance personal trainer at Pur Gym, and her clients know her as optimistic, encouraging - and relentless. She likes to see everyone do their best, because she knows that hard as she may try, she alone cannot protect Newhaven. It’s important to her that she see people learn to defend themselves, to grow strong.

Of course, she is still young; still learning. This is Mina’s first year of living independently, and she misses her mother deeply. She still phones several times a week, and is pleased to hear that her mother is enjoying retirement greatly - and in turn, her mother is pleased to hear that Mina is working hard. She still struggles with her moral compass, often unable to fully incapacitate villains or criminals. She wants desperately to do the right thing, and in the right way, but she is still only human and if she allows herself to hesitate and look in the eyes of her opponent, she will often falter. More than one criminal has gotten away from her because of this, and forgiving herself for those times is a long journey.

VIGILANTE NAME: Haetae.

PRONOUNS: She/her.

APPEARANCE: The Haetae is a Korean mythological creature symbolising protection. The costume, which is passed down through the generations with modifications and upgrades made as new materials become available, works to mirror this. It is a full-body leotard made of grey-blue kevlar woven in a linked pattern that resembles the scales of the Haetae, worn with black steel toe-capped boots for their sturdiness. The mask used to have a horn, but as time went on it became apparent that not only was this cumbersome, it looked rather foolish. Now, the Haetae wears a mask that covers the eyes and meets in a short peak at the top center, giving the appearance almost of a tiara - it is only a subtle nod to the appearance of the creature. The mask is in a deep bronze colour, matching the sigil of the Haetae that is worn on the chest of the costume..

SIGIL: The sigil is a simplified haetae, and looks very much like a lion with fangs bared, and a pattern of swirls about the edges.

COLOUR SCHEME: Deep Blue ( 012345 ) Bronze ( 875E2A ) Slate Gray ( 2F4F4F )

FIGHTING STYLE: Close quarters combat. Having been trained in hand-to-hand combat from a young age, Haetae isn’t afraid to dive right in to the action. With her superhuman strength, her talent lies in ending fights quickly and cleanly. She will never aim for a fatality, instead incapacitating her opponents so that they can be given over to police custody, where they will be dealt with properly. Haetae is always careful not to overstep her boundaries, feeling that while it is her place to protect those who cannot protect themselves, she will never be judge, jury, or executioner - she sees her job as putting villains in the hands of the law.

MORAL ALIGNMENT:  Lawful good.

POWER: Haetae’s power comes from the silver token that is worn on a thin chain around her neck - it sits beneath her costume so that it is never visible. Once the token is removed, she will only have the strength of any other human - but with the token around her neck, she possesses a superhuman strength. It isn’t limitless, but it is very potent; in her experience, Haetae can lift trucks, knock down walls, and bend metal as easily as if it were butter. She is always mindful of this power, as it could easily kill a human: something she has vowed she will never do.

HEADCANONS:

Mina doesn’t have many hobbies outside of work and training, but she loves to cook. She learned this from her mother, because they burned so many calories in their training that big, nutrient-rich meals were vital. It’s one of the few things outside of martial arts that Mina gets truly excited to discuss, and she’s always keen to invite people around for dinner. She particularly enjoys cooking with Korean flavours as that’s what she was raised with, but always enjoys experimenting.

Although Mina loves her lifestyle and the feeling that she’s improving the world, she sometimes feels that she missed out on certain things, like education. She completed high school to a satisfactory level, but didn’t have the time to commit to a 4.0 GPA due to her rigorous training schedule. Though it’s likely she’ll never attend college, she does want to learn. She doesn’t have a specific focus, but she’s usually found with earbuds in, listening to educational podcasts about any topic from the rise and fall of Roman civilisation to string theory. She doesn’t always understand all of it, but she finds it more fun than just listening to music while she works out.

Mina has never had a serious relationship, and isn’t terribly interested in one, but she feels the pressure as she knows one day she will have to pass down the mantle of Haetae; preferably before she’s too old to offer proper training. Her mother had her when she was only twenty one, the age Mina is now. The identity of her father is a mystery, and she has the distinct impression that her mother just had a few one night stands until she fell pregnant, for the sake of having a baby. That’s not the life Mina wants. If she has a child, she wants it to be with someone special. The idea raises a lot of questions, though: should she tell them about her vigilante work? How would she have that conversation? What if they weren’t okay with her raising a child into a life of danger and violence? For now, Mina prefers to ignore the topic and staunchly refuses any offers to go to speed dating with her colleagues, and she certainly won’t join Tinder.

Being in the personal training industry, Mina feels it would be unfair and dishonest to wear her talisman during training. She’s very strong for her stature anyway, and doesn’t want the extra edge. However, she’s afraid to leave it in her house in case of a break in. If she lost it, she’d be losing a family legacy of allegedly centuries. Instead she carries it in an old Altoids mint box in a hidden pocket inside her coat, and when she goes to work she leaves this coat in a locker with three different padlocks on it. This has led to some laughter among her colleagues - the paranoia over her possessions, combined with her shady and secretive nighttime activities, have led them to joke that she’s a drug dealer. Mina laughs and encourages the joke, as she’d rather people think that, than have her secret identity discovered.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Desired Plots:

A workout buddy. Most of Mina’s life is devoted to fitness and exercise, and I’d love to explore a relationship based on sparring/jogging together/rowing, any sort of fitness. She’s great at motivating people and will bring delicious homemade snacks. So far she has very few friends, and this would be a great way for her to get involved with the more normal side of things in Newhaven.

Partnering Up. Haetae has always worked alone, and it never occurred to Mina to work with another hero; she never even went out with her mother, because only one person can hold the talisman. Throughout Haetae’s history she’s never had a partner - but then, she’s never been in a territory so saturated with heroes as Newhaven. Whether they team up mid-fight and find themselves working well together, or hear about one another by reputation and want to work with each other due to complementary skillsets, it’d be great to have Mina working with someone else.

Out of her comfort zone. Mina has a very set routine and lifestyle, and it could definitely do with a bit of shaking up. She could meet a bit of a party animal and get dragged into drinks and karaoke, or spotted at random and asked to help someone with their hobby; specifics obviously depend on the other character but I’d love to see her forced in to letting loose a little.

Vulnerability. Strength and independence are the backbone of Mina’s lifestyle, so let’s put her in a situation where she’s totally helpless. Maybe she’s caught without her talisman and bound before she can fight back, or someone spikes her drink leaving her confused and frightened, or she gets herself into a fight she simply can’t win!
