Writing OCs question

has anybody ever had the experience while writing/outlining that you don't really like one of your main characters? i get that not all of your characters have to start out as good or likable people -- narratively that's fun, even -- but i'm talking more about being disinterested in them despite the purpose they serve the narrative. just not really being invested in them or connecting with them even though you know they're important.

is this unusual? is this a sign of bad writing or that you need to do more work on the character, or that this character needs to "cook" longer? i'm just wondering about peoples' experience with their OCs that's all!

also feel free to infodump all about your unlikable OCs, i'd love to get to know them.

Nothing specific coming to mind atm in regard to like, general trends. Maybe one thing is like, Tumblr likes to ask unimportant questions? "Why is THIS THING happening", "Why is THAT there?".

Anal-retentive stuff like that.

Tumblr likes to fixate on missing shoes, for example. It's always "where did her shoe goes", "why's he missing a shoe", "omg the missing shoe". Honestly, nobody on douyin noticed the shoe, or if they did, they didn't care to comment on it. Like who cares where the shoe is? This video is not about how someone's foot got busted up because they were only wearing one shoe. Like this is a silly goofy video, officer, why are you asking so many questions. Etc.

Douyin users like to play "yes and" in the comment section is another point of contrast, I guess. That is, if there's something that can be extrapolated and spectated on, it will be. Scenarios WILL be played out. POVs and thought processes of any character in a video (be it subject, passerby, inanimate object, or external reference) WILL be imagined and assumed.

I'm just spitballing here but I sort of feel like tumblr users don't do that because in general the evolution of the culture on this site makes it impolite to presume things about strangers or assert their POV, even jokingly. Or maybe this comes from IRL sensibilities, idk, seems like it could just be a general American thing (I say, speaking as one).

How do I not get stressed about one thing I have to do and have it keep me from accomplishing anything else? How do I manage to buy groceries and take my cat to the vet and still sit down to draw? “C’mon Kiki hurry up! You don’t want to be late do you?” Carmine yelled outside.

“I’m coming, I’m coming. Geez.” Kieran mumbled, fidgeting with his jacket as he got out of the house.

Carmine raised an eyebrow. “Well, aren’t you excited to see your friend Florian?”

“Y-yes.. But he also has other friends joining him.” 

“Right. You invited them too, you know.”

Kieran scratched the back of his head in a nervous manner. “..yeah. I’m just worried if they don’t like me.”

“Seriously? Kiki, come on be more confident in yourself. You are my little adorable nerdy brother. How can they not like you?” Carmine teased.

“Aw c’mon sis...”

Carmine's eyes caught a glimpse of a group of teens walking over to their home. She waved at them in greeting then flinched as she saw one of them charging up to them. 

Nemona was so excited to meet Florian’s friends and of course was interested in battling Kieran. The teens behind her started catching up to her realizing it too late as Nemona was starting to talk the Kitakami siblings' ears off.

“Ah sorry about Nemona.” Florian laughed. “I totally forgot about her wanting to battle people. I’ve been so used to it.”

“I haven’t. That girl just has infinite energy for battles.” Penny muttered, tapping away on her phone.

“There is no escape to it unfortunately.” Arven sighed then looked over at Kieran giving him a look. “Just so you know I’m Florian’s bestest friend.”

“Seriously, when did you get to decide that?” Penny rolled her eyes.

“O-oh okay?” Kieran said in confusion then jumped back in surprise as Nemona got close to Kieran's face without him knowing.

“So I heard you were a champion at Blueberry Academy. We should battle! I’ll meet you over at the community center!” The girl ran off in a hurried fashion.

“Nemona please- and she’s gone. Sorry Kiki, that's totally on me. I shouldn’t have told her that.” Florian said, shaking his head.

“N-No it’s fine. Uhm I don’t mind battling her anyway.” Kieran reassured. 

Florian looked at him then gave him a grin. “I believe in you, Kiki!”

Kieran felt his face a bit hot. “Thank you.. I will try my best.”

He started his way over to the community center. ‘I haven’t trained with my Pokemon for a while. This is going to be a bit tough.’

Nemona's eyes lit up as she saw Kieran running over to the community center. She pumped up her fists in the air in an excited manner. 

“Let us have a fruitful battle!” Nemona sent out her Pokemon.

Oh no. Kieran gulped in a nervous manner. His team is not built for singles. This is going to be rough.

It was a neck and neck battle but Nemona won in the end. Which he was fine with and the battle was pretty fun! It felt like all his worries washed away during the battle. It was exhilarating and her cheerful demeanor pumped him up too.

“That was so fun!!” Nemona shouted in excitement across the battlefield then started walking up to Kieran. “We have to battle again. I need to see what Pokemon to use. for the next one”

“C’mon Nemona give the dude a break.” Penny said with a sigh, walking up to the two. Followed by the others behind her.

“You know.. I’m the best trainer in Kitakami.” Carmine said smugly, placing her hand on her chest proudly.

Kieran rolled his eyes at that. “Sis I don’t think-” “No way! Really? We have to battle now!” Nemona said excitedly.

“H-how about we rest for a bit. It’s been kind of a long trip getting here anyway. Let’s head inside the community center to relax.” Florian suggested, making his way over to the building. The group nodded and followed suit.

Another reason why my squish is amazing

so a couple of days ago, I was having a really bad day (this week has been a lot) and then I lost my comfort item (A small owl stuffed animal called Oreo) and couldn't find it anywhere. I was incredibly upset, I went to tell them what had happened, before running to the toilets and having a meltdown. They ran after me (I couldn't hear them) before promptly RUNNING all the way to the top of the tower block (4 floors if you count the ground floor), asking a friend which classes I had had and then running to each class room to look for it. They found it, went back up to check with my friend that it was the right thing, before saying "now I just need to find them" and running all the way back down to look for me. I had gone back to the rest if the group after my meltdown and was trying to stay calm and do some work to keep my mind off of it, they found me and gave Oreo to me.

so tldr my squish is AMAZING and I love them sooo much, they're such a wonderful person like omg

Been thinking abt thesa/thancred and how long it took her to take her feelings seriously. Sometimes, you repress a part of your heart for so long that when it's reawaken, it feels like a dream. Or a nightmare even. And it's painful at first and just genuinely seems morally wrong for someone, so duty bounded, but then.... once he takes a step forward, it flows so easily. It's like he's giving her his hand and saying, "I'll teach you how to deal with it," and if it was spoken by any other soul in any other tone, she'd take offense. If it was anyone else but him. And when they are together at first, it just entirely feels like puppy love. And for some reason she knows that past-thesa would scoff at this and how childish it looks - how she acts like a teenager in love sometimes when they are alone - and she loves it because Thancred doesn't think that. And slowly, she isn't thinking that anymore. She's learning with him, you know.
