Regarding the race, I'd actually argue that it wasn't as much the hard tires that cost Merc the win, it was RB only needing one pit stop. The softs (and a longer run on the mediums) wouldn't have made a difference, not unless Max would've pitted a second time.

So I have to disagree that Merc's strategy call was the wrong one, at that point in time.

In fact, it would've lead to a P1-P2 podium if both RBs had pitted twice. A P2-P3 podium if only Checo had pitted, like Shov later expected when it became clear that Max wouldn't. But neither one of the Red Bulls did go for a second stop, so that's what fucked us over.

Putting George or Lewis or both on softer tires wouldn't have made a difference with the pace of the Red Bulls. Not to mention that the hard tire pace looked strong in the beginning, which is why it made sense to put Lewis on them in order to chase Max. And then his first rounds were strong, which is why George's call didn't make sense to the strategy team at the time and just seemed like a risk. They do have the data that the drivers can't access during a race. It's just that the medium lasted longer than expected - and thanks to that we lost not only the win but also the double podium.

The strategy would have worked out perfectly if the Red Bulls had gone for a two stop, but they surprisingly didn't have to. Which is why Lewis' call before the race to start on the softs would've made the most sense - but you're always smarter after the damage has been done. I think we were doomed as soon as we started on the mediums, not as soon as we switched to the hards.

Okay I don’t have time to address all of this, because it’s a fuckin Monday night and you’re the first person back into my inbox without so much as a “hey mark how are you?” apparently, but I take issue with “The strategy would have worked out perfectly if the Red bulls had gone for a two stop”

But they didn’t.

I’d like to point out I also didn’t have an issue with Merc going to hard. It was a risky strat but had promising stability if it worked. My problem with Mercedes strategy is not that they are incapable of making a good plan.

They are paid a lot more than I, an rpf posting tumblr blog run by a queer 23 year old, am to get this stuff right. They will not make the right choices every time, and they cannot anticipate what Red bull will do every time. My problem is that whenever we make the wrong call, Mercedes seems to twiddle it’s thumbs and hope it works out. And they seem so worried about splitting their driver strategy in the hopes they won’t be accused of preferential treatment, that they then end up fucking both drivers.

This is one of countless races since the summer break where we hear Lewis insist he wanted to start on something different and was overruled (Singapore, wanting to start on used, here on softs or have George start on softs), or we hear George insist on a different tire choice based on feel and he’s ignored (Singapore, Japan, here). They don’t listen to their drivers and then when they fuck up they shrug and go “well, we couldn’t have known”. George and Lewis’ original complaints were easy to overrule with data, but at the same time as the pit wall has the data the drivers don’t, the pit wall are not the drivers and data isn’t absolute. If your driver says “I hate this tire” for 20 laps, they’re telling you “I can’t move or fight with this, I can’t do anything”.

I’m not asking for split second panic calls. We aren’t ferrari. But maybe after 30 laps of your drivers telling you they can’t move on these tyres and George having a clear pit window, you pit one. You do what Merc keep insisting they want to do, and make risky moves. Because mercs complacency in Mexico meant Redbull felt perfectly Safe from George, who was struggling with pace and back markers already, and were able to nurse mediums to the end.

If they had tried to split strat, say “okay George, your hards aren’t working, do you want to try to put on softs and TRY to catch Perez”, they may have panicked the Bulls into pitting perez and then George could have tried to fight him. It would have been less boring, and frankly if Perez couldn’t get past Lewis on mediums, he was going to struggle fighting George on level tires. Yes It could have risked Lewis, but he wasn’t going to catch max anyway without a mistake. Rather than settle for a 2/4 and hope for a SC, we could have pitted both cars and tried to push them both past perez again together for a 2/3.

Yes it would have been more risky, yes it might not have worked out, and I understand why Merc see a safe, high point total as frustrating but acceptable. But I also hate this weekly game of “well we thought it would work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “

I do not think it was the worst strat in the world, either, it was frustrating but sensible. In fact, while I have critisim in hindsight, I see it’s value as a plan when accounting for mistakes, safety cars and yes, Red Bull fucking pitting. I also advocate for split stratting here, but see the value in keeping both drivers level to prevent a ZV style torrent of abuse and accusations that one driver is being favoured.

Perhaps I maybe didn’t include effective nuance in my 23:00 headache induced shitposts as I commiserated a lost double podium and a miserable looking Lewis. I’ll be sure to fix that next time, and not, as I did today, make funny memes you now don’t deserve about it.

my prof just explained on the syllabus that he’s included more points in the class than we needed to pass, so we could skip up like?? 20 small assignments/quizzes/participation!! and still get a very high grade!!

the idea was that we could focus on assignments that played to our strengths - only do the participation stuff if we like to talk out loud - only do the quizzes/readings if we want to do the class remotely - only do online discussions if we like to talk and share opinions but struggle with anxiety in class ect.

and that’s cool enough but then he pulled up DnD character sheets with drawings he’d done of these hypothetical student player classes and how our various accessibility needs could be gamified to ‘max out’ different aspects of the class to get high grades and like!!!!!

hell yeah!!!! let’s treat accessibility in higher education not just as a necessity but as the fun, engaging, and creative aspect of learning that it is!!! I love this!!
