Post 7 comfort movies and tag 7 people

I don’t get to rewatch a lot of things anymore, mostly because I am not highly technologically adept and don’t have much time...

1. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) This should not be a surprise to anyone. I knew this movie backwards and forwards before my brain had settled enough to actually remember character names. This may be a clue as to why I am the way I am.

2. The Secret of Pirate Island (2009) If you’ve ever heard of this in your life, please let me know. The brother and I watched this so frequently that we can still probably recite the entire thing. I have many questions, such as who funded this absurd Playmobil movie, who approved this plot, and how can I meet them. There is a game show, with fabulous prizes. There is a dragon. There is, as my friend puts it, “suddenly John Lennon but he’s southern”. Also definitely influenced why I’m Like This.

3. The Hunt for Red October (1990) Probably a weird choice for a “comfort” movie, but it reminds me of my granddad, and, to a certain degree, more modern warships are just as Aesthetic™ as older ones, just in a very different way.

4. The Green Hornet Strikes Again! (1941) I have never finished this, ever, and I doubt that I ever will. But, given that the full serial has a runtime of about 4.5 hours, and I can only watch it at my grandparents’ house, I think that’s reasonable. It just has strange, nostalgic vibes, and the constant alternation between Sudden Intense Cliffhangers and Everything Being Perfectly Fine is weirdly relaxing for me.

5. Emma (2020) Amazing colors, amazing costumes, amazing sets... the entire cast continually astonishes me with their beauty... and the soundtrack.... *is currently listening to the soundtrack* Johnny Flynnnnnn....

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) *shrugs* It’s just good! The music alone... I have nothing more to say.

7. Wolfwalkers (2020) Possibly the most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen. The animation style is like nothing else I’ve ever seen, looking alternately like old woodcuts or watercolors... also I just love a well-done werewolf story.

Its 7:45 pm dark/cold/coffee

It was the last week of January and someone mentioned that it was almost time for “Women In Horror Month” which happens in February. Feel a bit inspired I quickly tossed out a “interviews wanted” in my faithful casting group and got a very nice group of talented actresses who have worked in horror films who agreed to answer some questions. First up is Samantha “Sam” Krause. Samantha wears a lot of hats in her young life,she is a newlywed,a working actress and is studying to become animal veterinarian. Of course as a owner of a cheetah,I have a soft spot for anyone who helps animals when they are hurt or ill and Samantha does love animals. But the urge to be a creative artist also tugs on her heart and she really loves acting as well. Finding the balance is a full-time job in of itself of being a actress and a healer but as you’ll see,if anyone is capable of doing both,its this young lady right here. She’ll be the only actress to kick a werewolf’s ass and then turn around and treat it afterwards…. I hope you enjoy meeting and reading Samantha’s answers to her 8 Questions…..

Please introduce yourself and tell us what projects you are working on.

I’m Samantha Krause (formerly Samantha Crespo). I also go by Sam like Sam-I-am. Apart from actively auditioning for various projects and jobs, I am currently working on some music videos, playing a role in an upcoming short film, and writing a few projects of my own (films & parody music videos) to produce.

What was growing up in your home like? Where did you get your artistic and creativeness from? What are your three fondest memories of growing up?

Growing up in my home was definitely different. I was homeschooled up until 6th grade and I grew up at a 501-C3 nonprofit animal rescue that my mom owned and operated. That was the experience of a life time! In the morning I would do my school work and then I would go out and play with the animals, prepare various diets, and help with treatments that some of them needed. This is where I became okay with blood, guts, and getting dirty. It is also where and how I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian. I watched my first surgery at the age of 4 and my first euthanasia at a very young age as well. My artistic side probably came from entertaining myself a lot and having the freedom to learn in different ways than regular school attending children. I also had a lot of one-on-one teaching from my mom and a couple of tutors and began piano and dance lessons at the age of 4 or 5. I had the opportunity to participate in pageants and was Miss Arizona Princess in 2003??? My three fondest memories growing up: the duck I had that imprinted on me, helping rehabilitate baby birds and rabbits, interacting with the exotic animals and wildlife such as lemurs, skunks, raccoons, turtles, and so much more.

When did you know you wanted to be an entertainer and how did you start pursuing your goals?

I always enjoyed entertaining people as a child since I was in piano, dance, and pageants. It helped me build confidence, self-esteem, and get used to being in front of a crowd. However, I didn’t have the realization I actually wanted to be a performer (professionally) until mid-high school and then again in college when I finally realized that I was an adult and could take control and pursue entertainment however seriously I wanted whether it be a career or a hobby.

What makes a good horror film for you – the scares or the blood and guts?

I personally get a thrill from scaring people whether that means I get to be the scary character or I have to act like the character that is being scared – they both build suspense in the audience if done well and with good story writing. The blood and guts don’t bother me but they can definitely be overdone and I’m not a huge fan of gore. When watching horror films with blood, guts, and “unique” characters (ghosts/demons/creatures or anything that takes a lot of work from the makeup and special effects department) I like to imagine all of the time, effort, and various techniques that went into creating what the audience sees on the screen.

What three horror films have impacted you the most, both as a fan and as an actress?

I think my favorite “horror” or “scary” movies are Insidious 1, 2, & 3. I think part of this is because of the memory I have of watching Insidious with some old classmates. Every time a “scary” part would come up, I wasn’t scared; instead I would laugh! It even got to the point where I got really good at anticipating when they were going to add a jump scare in and I would do something like scream or tap a classmate on the shoulder right before to try and really scare them. I also like reading and watching things by Stephen King.

What was your experience like in shooting “This Is Where You Die”? Is there any role that you would pass on horror-wise as a performer?

I think being on set of “This Is Where You Die” was one of my favorite and most memorable experiences because it was my first time on set of a film. I was super excited to have been cast and the character I was casted as really gave me the room to create something from literally nothing. There was no written backstory for my character and I enjoyed making her as horrible and terrifying as I possibly could. At the end of shooting, I convinced the hair/makeup department and director to let me keep my makeup on and I scared people walking back to my car. I also made a pit stop at a fuel station on the way home just so I could see some peoples’ reactions – and it was worth it!

What is more difficult to do as an actress, a romantic scene or a death and how do you handle playing those parts?

Personally, I didn’t think I was cut out for romance. I enjoy comedy and thought maybe I could pull off rom-com but after some things I was cast in that made me stretch and grow as an actress; I think I can definitely pull of romance. Making a really believable scene where I die could also definitely be a challenge however, I could do it. At the end of the day I would enjoy both and I know I can handle both scenarios but the death scene would be most challenging in my opinion. Especially since I haven’t personally experienced death or much death of humans and I like to pull from personal experience to fuel my characters and performance.

I see you are studying to be a veterinary doctor, how will you balance your acting career with being a doctor?What led you to choosing to help animals? Are cheetahs your favorite animal?

I was recently accepted into professional school into the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. I took this semester off and am planning on returining this fall. It is an intense and challenging program but I trust the results will be very rewarding since I have been working towards being a vet since the age of 4. The same goes for acting however. I have wanted to be in the entertainment industry since doing pageants and I chose 2 very hard career paths (some of the hardest to get into and be successful in – acting and veterinary medicine). But there are many lovely examples of actors that are successful academically as well as in the entertainment industry such as Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong, Freddie Highmore, Ashton Kutcher, and many more. I plan on putting grades first but also taking the time and effort to have a life outside of school and pursue my career as an actress. I plan on continuing classes when I don’t have the time to go out and audition and using school breaks to pursue roles in upcoming projects.

My experience of rescuing, rehabilitating, and working with animals at my mom’s animal rescue was definitely the key thing that led me to wanting to be a veterinarian and serve animals and the people that love them too!

I would say cheetahs are definitely on my bucket list of animals to work with or interact with but my favorite animals (too hard to pick an absolute favorite) are ferrets, dogs, jaguars, panthers, otters, and racoons.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I hope to have my DVM as well as a substantial career as an actress. I would really love to own my own veterinary practice so I can control the quality of care for my patients and also make my own schedule to leave time and space for friends, family, hobbies, and my acting career and goals.

The cheetah and I are flying over to watch your latest film but we are a day early and now you are playing tour guide, what are we doing?

Well, if we are talking about Phoenix, Arizona then I am either out and about running to auditions or doing things with my friends and family. We like to do different activities whether it be indoor rock climbing, playing games, diy activities, making dinner or baking tasty treats, and so on. If we are in the town I “grew up” in and spent my high school years then we are in Pinetop, Arizona. If we are there then I am either four wheeling with friends, hiking with my dogs to one of the little streams, hanging out with my husband’s side of the family, grilling, at a lake, out at one of the country style bars, or filling in at the animal hospital as a vet tech. It’s a smaller town where a lot of people know each other and there are four seasons despite being in Arizona. In the winter, hot chocolate, sledding, and hosting a Christmas party are some of my favorite things to enjoy!

I like to thank Samantha for sitting down and having a chat with us. Of course we’re a little confused on a jaguar is more cooler then a cheetah but happy to know that Samantha loves all animals equally. We have a feeling her skill set will come in handy if she ever meets Bigfoot or a Wendigo in one of her film roles!!
