Matteo Pessina: Logbook - Last Chapter

Dear Diary, WE ARE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS!

Yesterday was a special day. We were received by the highest offices of the State. Chiello's words were perfect, they summed up the feelings of all of us in the best possible way. It's no coincidence that he's our Captain! And then the crowd in the streets of Rome... an incredible emotion.

Today is the parting day. I feel the melancholy that comes at the end of a great journey, when you rewind the tape of emotions and you can't help but think of the acknowledgments.

The first person I would like to thank is our leader, coach Roberto Mancini. I still remember when he called me the first time. "Italia chiamò", in every sense of the word.

With him, I want to thank the staff that worked behind the scenes for this success. From Gianluca Vialli (and his prophetic words, full of values) to the warehousemen, from the medical staff to the cooks... "Let's all pull together". We pulled together and we won.

Thanks to my ping pong partner Loca, to the National team's sommelier Barella, to DJ Insigne, to Gigio's big hands, to Chiello and Leo's mentality... in short, to all of you, my magnificent adventure companions.

To my family, my friends and my girlfriend. The first look was always for you. And so it will always be. The other night as I held that cup I was thinking about the sacrifices you all made for me. I hope I made you proud.

Finally, my thanks go to all Italians. To that wonderful people who, in these months, have had to face very hard trials. To those who have suffered the loss of an affection or a job and maybe on Sunday smiled again after a long time. To everyone who has worked day and night to save lives in our hospitals, doctors and nurses: the true champions are and will always be you.

Dear Diary, today ends the most beautiful chapter of my life so far. But it won't close for good, it will remain in the hearts of each of us: we will always be the Brothers of Italy of that magical summer of 2021.

From tomorrow a new one will start. And I will be ready to write it.
