Top 5 Books to Read This Year
Tagged by the excellent @xserpx (much appreciated!) 😘
1. The Cheese and the Worms by Carlo Ginzburg - SO. Funny story about this book: I first found out about it during a nonfiction sale period at my bookstore and I asked my The First Law server about nonfictions to read, and one particular member gave me this idiosyncratic recommendation that I had little idea of the magnitude of until she sold me on it on the basis of  Menocchio’s life being a microhistory of larger cultural/mental histories at work.
But the biggest draws, for me, personally? Was that she said the books excellently illuminated an entirely different time period of mindset, how alien and different it was from our current one, but with enough humanity and curiosity to retain what recognizably made them similar to us and that Menocchio was treated like he was the main character. This educated lowborn peasant not only had a working mind as a given, but that he had a fascinating belief system that led him to be declared a heretic by the Inquisition and a historian thought he deserved enough merit to write a whole book on.
And the more I dug into the premise of this book, the more I realized this was tailor-made to be precisely my kind of shit. So many fantasy novels lack the interiority or agency of the lowborn peasantry, so a nonfiction that peeled at the layers of a lowborn man, treated his mind and beliefs as worthy of consideration and genuine theological thought... gods, it’s an amazing rec. Checking around, it seems like it’s a one-of-a-kind sort of historical text,  so I truly hope it lives up to the hype I was given.
2. Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot - The amusing irony to me is that, despite me having recced Eliot’s Middlemarch to two other people in the The First Law server we share, and gotten them invested enough to finish, and finish hard enough to say that they loved it, I haven’t cracked open a single George Eliot book (at this point, not from lack of having, I bought both the Oxford edition and the Penguin Classics Deluxe edition of Middlemarch alone).
That’s not from lack of accolades, a teacher twitter whose reading tastes I trust recced it to me as the best novel he’s ever read, and from what I heard of its themes and how it balances the why of a communication with the how being just as important, the smaller domestic touches to it, and the sheer scope of characterization it promises (I’ve got an interesting vantage point with Middlemarch, I have recced it, and thus I am told of its virtues by people I know and trust). But I don’t want to start off with Eliot’s best work. I want to start off with her shorter-form works first, hence, Scenes of Clerical Life, then her other works that I own, so I can build up to the swell of Middlemarch.
(It also doesn’t hurt that Scenes of Clerical Life focuses on religion and clergymen, and the countryside and smaller lives in the scope of greater events, considering my fantasy veers towards attending the little people more and my Croatian-inspired story deals with questions of faith as well, so three birds with one stone.)
3. The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker - The Golem and the Jinni was a book that became more than the first foot in the door of a phase of fantasy for me that primarily consisted of domestic fantasies after Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings’ moments of slice-of-life. I checked it out from a list of more domestic/mundane fantasies list and I dearly loved the meandering, patient pace of it, how much Chava and Ahmad’s struggles were that of connection and how to deal with inhumane loneliness against the backdrop of so much humanity. That the narrative preoccupied itself with Chava and Ahmad interacting with their communities, rather than needing to be railroaded into action or a plot, was something I hope the author never gives up on, for it’s a sorely missing part of fantasy (in fact, when the book did railroad into a confrontation with an asshole, I enjoyed it less).
So the sequel’s virtues are self-evident to me, the reviews even suggested it was better than the prior book, the pace just as meandering and slow, if not slower, and the author not skipping a step in terms of focusing on the interpersonal relationships rather than action. But, now, I have different reasons for checking it out, beyond being a fan of this series: to scratch at the itch of humanity through the eyes of inhumanity, considering I’m working with a dragon character and despite their inherited knowledge and memories, still having the innocence and questions of why humanity does this or that, just like Chava and Ahmad both had in the first book. How the inhumane interact with humans has become a fascinating stretch of theme for me via writing dragons, and I’m looking forward to this book to study ways to improve my writing there.
It’s slow, it’s got non-humans treated with complexity, it’s a series of books that deals with the immigrant experience and diaspora, both of the supernatural and the Jewish nature, it interacts with questions of community and how we treat our fellow people, it’s full of slice-of-life passages, which is something I also want to depict in my fantasy, and the interpersonal relationships are first and foremost the important aspects of them. It’s very much comfortable and what I want out of my fantasy.
4. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel - same teacher twitter as the above really dug this book, and someone else I know is reading it, but if The Golem and the Jinni was a comfort read, this feels more geared towards a bracing punch of a book, especially given our current COVID-19 pandemic. I’m not going to mince words: a good chunk of world’s, especially the US, reaction to COVID-19 has been several mixtures of fatal embarrassment and part of that is the bitter realization that most people, both in charge and on the ground, don’t see responsibility towards their fellow person as an inherent quality. Have I grown more cynical through that? I was already pretty cynical, so not more so, but also because there are also plenty of people who do see connections to their fellow people as an inherent duty and condition for our humanity. Thus, why I want to read this book: survival is insufficient, because if we live for ourselves, if we are bereft of others, what are we? Oh, as the book is quoted as saying: Hell is the absence of the people you long for.
A quieter apocalypse feels more like my vibe, especially in the sense that I feel most people, in the wake of an apocalypse, wouldn’t go with the worst-case scenario that post-apocalyptic fiction has taught us about barbaric rapists, petty warlords, and thieves by gunpoint. Those are the worst case lessons, the people fiction endeavors to teach us to avoid being, the thunder and boom and villains of genre fiction. But what happens if our focus isn’t on external human terrors, but more existential questions and concerns after the mortal deaths of so many? Station Eleven seems to be a novel that seems interested in questioning how our humanity endures, how we do not die spiritually past our mortal deaths, how our memories remain resilient, how our works survive past pandemic and societal collapse.
It’s been in my library for quite a while now, and Station Eleven is one of those books that I wish to tackle outside my cozy fantasy wheelhouse. I have not read this, not because the existence of COVID-19 made it too real, but because I now want a post-apocalypse book that refuses to revel in the dark and naked nihilism of its barren genre landscape, choosing to highlight human connections and meaning past our mass-destruction.
5. Tower of Fools by Andrzej Sapkowski - So. Another anecdote: I just bought Witcher 3 a few days ago. Really, all three games. Now, granted, I haven’t been living under a rock. I’ve watched clips, scenes, and know the broad scope of the game’s plot and was interested in it, but digging deeper, what interested me was the Polish influence with the series. Sapkowski does not strike me an unintelligent writer at all, he clearly knows what he’s trying to do and subvert and comment on. Which is to say, when I say I haven’t bought a single Witcher book at all, it says something about what I’ve heard of its translation issues and Sapkowski’s feelings on his Witcher series (though I doubt he’d be much happier that I prefer to read his Hussite Trilogy first as much as I gave him money to begin with. You do you, Sapkowski).
Now, I didn’t follow his works enough to know about the Hussite Trilogy’s existence until @autoapocrypha recced it to me, but from what I’ve researched myself, it really seems like Sapkowski poured a ton of details and love and thought into this world than his Witcher world. It’s a historical fantasy world, full of religious extremism, war being utter hell, costs of violence, and supernatural creatures lurking in the corners, and thus, is perfect research fodder for my Croatian-inspired The Folk Devils of Hrvatska, which incidentally slots into similar themes and setting that the Hussite Trilogy seems to play with. That, and I really do want to get into the fuss of Sapkowski in the brass tacks and such.
There’s an amazing amount of thematic and unique history to be studied from the Eastern European portion of the world, the infighting, the nationalism, the religious extremism and near-constant strife of war littering the land, full of colonial bastards trying to pull a game of musical chairs with the little people underfoot being stomped on with every pissing contest between rulers. It’s an idiosyncratic space of land I absolutely want to study and want even more of in the general fantasy landscape, given where Sapkowski’s interests lie.
Honorable mentions, because I couldn’t localize to top 5 books (this list was originally over ten!!!):
The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune - Found family with supernatural characters? Domestic peace? All living in the same area with no clear-cut bad guy to railroad the plot? Yes, please.
Independent People by Halldór Laxness - Excellent research fodder for the interiority and struggles of the lowborn farmers and trying to carve out a living beyond serving masters with no romanticism at all.
The Tenants of Moonbloom by Edward Lewis Wallant - Another slice-of-life book that pays attentions to the connections that we share with others, especially in the same proximity of space.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - Clarke’s leaner and potentially better novel over her debut one? One that @books-and-doodles described as having a protagonist similar to Fitz? INJECT THIS INTO MY VEINS.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang - slight research fodder (more to do with pacing and forefronting YA elements before whamming readers into the brutal stuff), but also non-European and woman-written grimdark? 👍
Tagging: @vera-dauriac, @autoapocrypha, @insecticidalfeminism, @doublehex, @xillionart, @random-jot, @jumpydr4gon, @bloody-wonder, and @mytly4 and whoever else that is following me and wishes to do this tag (I’d like to read your posts, so please tag me! :D)

Okay! So this one needs some warnings, I guess. This is a Elu time-travel AU type of thing that I created inside my own head because I just needed to write about it. It’s very angsty, probably a little too much, but again, I wanted to write it and so I did.
There’s a brief mention of suicide thoughts, but it’s very quick and never again!
Lola is just briefly mentioned, there’s no mentioning of ages or anything, but when I wrote this, I didn’t imagine having a big difference of age between them. Lucas and Lola are basically the same age, just months apart. Eliott is two years older and a few months. I think this is it for warnings: Very angst, cheating, Alternative Universe, Lola and Eliott don’t have a big age difference between them. Yeah. If it’s not your thing, that’s totally fine and no need to read it <3
There will be more parts to this, it’s just a little too long and didn’t want to post a huge thing at once.
Time is subjective, especially for Eliott. If he wanted to, he could go back in time, go forward, but he doesn’t. For months, he thinks about his options and he doesn’t even see the days going by, stuck inside his own head, measuring every option he has and every consequence it might bring.
If he goes back, he might make everything worse. If he goes to the future, he might see that this is it, he messed up to the point of no return and that would crush him.
It might sound exaggerated, but if Eliott went to the future and saw that Lucas wasn’t with him, he didn’t see a point on living. He’s been sitting here for a long time now, going through every moment of his life, every second of every mistake he made with Lucas. After seeing everything again, Eliott is just not caring about being the right type of human being that doesn’t think about ending his time in here for now. There’s nothing to lose so fuck it!
His life, this dark mind space he’s in right now, it’s all his fault and Eliott knows it. He’s suffering the consequences of his own actions. For some reason he can’t quite understand, his heart has such a hard time settling down sometimes.
He didn’t love Lola, not even for a second. Of course not, he wanted nothing to do with her in the way he wanted Lucas from the moment he saw him for the first time. He and Lola were acquaintances at best, nothing more, but somehow, Eliott ended up kissing her because the opportunity was there. The unknown was right in front of his face, offering itself like something so magical and unique and he just needed to know what it was, how it would feel.
Eliott feels so incredibly stupid and wrong, but he’s the worse at controlling himself, making up his mind and that’s why he can’t go back either. As he’s sitting on his couch, he knows what he did was wrong, so wrong, but he can’t be sure his past self wouldn’t make it worse if he went back in time.
The situations can change when he plays with time and the moment of the kiss could happen somewhere else, away from curious and knowing eyes.
Maybe it would happen when they ran into each other at a club and Eliott kept Lola from using drugs again. Maybe when he walked her home that same night or when she appeared at his door on an afternoon when Lucas was out with his friends and she went to grab some of his old art supplies. Eliott is trying to be honest now and if he’s being honest, he can’t be sure what would happen if they kissed when they were alone.
The thought of Lucas coming home, to their first home together, to see Eliott with someone else is almost too much. Eliott gets up from the couch, feeling all his joints crack as he walks for the first time in a long time, going to the kitchen. He can’t believe he’s this fucked up in his head.
It’s a lot colder than what he remembers. He looks out the window and the snow is already pilling up on the outside of their window. The kitchen stinks! Eliott opens their fridge and everything is basically rotten, almost creating roots inside the plastic bags. There’s no real food to eat so he has to settle with some tea and old crackers. As he sits back on the couch, all the Christmas lights from the building across the street make him realize what time it is. Maybe not Christmas yet, but December, at least. Eliott spent months sitting on his couch, mourning how he ruined the only thing he ever truly cared about.
Eliott is too afraid to ruin things even more, but he can’t help but close his eyes, forgetting his tea on the coffee table, trying to picture Christmas from last year, every detail he can remember, every smell and touch.
It’s a smooth travel and he manages to do it right, to go back to the exact hour he wanted to. Lucas is asleep so he won’t ever know Eliott went back in time, nothing will change. Eliott fell asleep almost instantly that night, feeling so happy with how his life was going, Lucas had liked his gifts and he bought Eliott everything he wanted and more. Eliot had bought them matching onesies and Lucas was sleeping wearing his hedgehog one.
Eliott lets himself watch Lucas sleep for the entire night. They just had their first Christmas dinner together and Lucas was so happy that night. They didn’t really talk about it, but Eliott could tell Lucas was proud that everything went smoothly.
He doesn’t let himself stay for too long though. It makes his heart hurt too much, it turns his reality even worse. The cold flat is exactly how Lucas left that night. There’s no sign of Lucas ever living here. While they were fighting, tears constantly running down Lucas’ cheeks, he made sure to grab every piece of clothing, every picture, every object that could have his touch and he took everything with him. Eliott was completely alone like never before, sitting on his couch for one more night.
Eliott is really struggling, but he lets himself be selfish and try again. From then to Christmas, he checks every social media, every day, in search of a clue of where he can find Lucas.
-
“Lucas!” He screams again, looking up, not even bothered by the snow falling directly on his face. Eliott knows he’s in the right place. He should have known, but at least Arthur’s “family” posted just hours ago gave him all he needed.
Eliott screams louder and for a brief second, he sees Arthur’s face on the window, and then he’s gone again. He puts his hand against the frozen wall, helping himself to get to the entrance. It’s Christmas night and it’s freezing, but Eliott doesn’t care. He just needs to see Lucas and talk to him, at least try it one more time.
The light on the hall turns on, telling him that someone is coming, he tries to stand on his own, fix his hair the best he can and then he recognizes Lucas. By the height and the most beautiful hair. Lucas finally opens the door and walks outside, hugging himself, unlocking the gate.
Eliott steps closer, sighing in relief, his frozen hands melt as soon as he touches Lucas’ cheeks, trying to kiss him, but Lucas’ hand comes to his chest faster, keeping him at arm’s lenght, creating a distance between them.
“You’re drunk.” Lucas whispers and Eliott can’t really pick if he’s angry or disappointed or sad...
“We’ve kissed while drunk before.” Eliott tries to kiss him again, but Lucas pushes him away, very gently, at least based on what Eliott was expecting Lucas would do.
“We’re not together, Eliott. Go home, it’s fucking Christmas.”
“I don’t give a shit about Christmas, Lucas! I just need you to forgive me.” He sees Lucas as a halo, moving around way too quickly for Eliott’s eyes to focus, but leaving a trace behind, like a picture when it’s double exposed. Lucas is on his phone, but he holds Eliott close, helping him stand without leaning against the wall.
Lucas doesn’t look at him, barely even acknowledges that’s Eliott there, the love of all his lives. “We’re not together, Eliott. There’s nothing to forgive.”
“Yes, there is! You know there is. I made a mistake and I’m here to ask for forgiveness again.” Eliott buries his head against Lucas’ neck. He still smells the same, his skin is still warm, smooth and so inviting.
“Stop...stop, Eliott,” Lucas whispers patiently, not even flinching when before a single neck kiss could break all of his walls.
There’s a car parking in front of them, Lucas opens the door and Eliott kind of slips inside, lying in the back seat. He tells someone the address and Eliott tries to hold his shirt, pull him inside the car with him. Lucas still knows their address.
“Lucas...please!” He says the last word louder, almost begging, but doesn’t have the strength or balance to sit fast enough.
“Go home, ok? Drink some water, take a warm shower. We’ll talk later.” Lucas is at the door but feels miles away.
The door is slammed close and the car is moving with no Lucas inside.

What are your top 10 Queliot moments?
Nonny, thank you so much for waiting patiently for this one!
I was just going to write out a list (after I got done being EXTREMELY stumped because- you expect me to just pick 10??! Rude.) but then I realized that I just hit 600 followers (what?!), and I wanted to do something a bit more to say thank you to all of you for putting up with me while I’m on my bullshit. So I went back through my favorite episodes and made some gifs for you, too!
Here you go. Hope you like it!!
Gigi’s Top 10 Queliot Moments (YMMV):
Tumblr media
10. This is from 1x03, Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting, and… it’s such a great breathing space. This whole episode, the Eliot + Quentin sideplot to retrieve the book was a delight, and it only happened because Eliot is so far gone on this boy. He could have taken literally any of the Physical Kids with him, but no, he’s got a crush on the super cute nerd that just moved in and so it HAS to be Q that comes with him. Eliot is highkey flirting with Quentin here, both as emotional support, and - I will maintain until my dying day - if Kady hadn’t blown the hinges off that door he was planning to make a move on Q that afternoon.
Tumblr media
9. I have so many feelings???? This is from 2x01, Knight of Crowns. Things are complex interpersonally between the whole gang right now, but out of everyone parting ways with Eliot, Q is who we get to see saying goodbye. Eliot is actually high king now, and he’s not any less depressed, or damaged emotionally or mentally. It didn’t immediately fix him like he wanted (much like how magic didn’t immediately fix Quentin, but that’s a meta for another time), and now he’s staring down being all that and an unknown future ruling this frankly odd kingdom (from books he apparently never bothered to read? El, baby. SMH.) potentially for the rest of his life without his friends. The two of them are so tender, Q initially leaning against Eliot to provide support, and then he doesn’t hesitate even a moment when Eliot asks for a hug. What at that point could be the very last hug he ever gets from Quentin in this lifetime. There is such a depth of feeling here between the two of them and I’m so glad the show gave us this (in S2! I’m!).
Tumblr media
8.  1x11, Remedial Battle Magic. Look at our babies and how happy they are?! I know they’re drunk on wine and emotions and about to seriously fuck their friendships up, but have they ever gotten a moment to breathe and be happy in each other’s presence since this? They haven’t. It’s been arguments and recriminations and quests and beasts and averting world-ending disasters since they woke up from this night. So I treasure this moment of soft smiles and touches (even Margo, I am not opposed to Marqueliot in this list at all). And of course, the threesome it is leading up to, and all of the implications and interpretations of that night that they take forward into the series with them.
Tumblr media
7. “I’m trying to tell you, you are not alone here.” From 1x02, The Source of Magic, this bonding scene has always felt very profound to me. These two boys have literally known each other, what, less than a week now? And here is Eliot “feelings are for other people” Waugh, opening up about his past traumas to try and connect with Quentin. The only other person we’ve ever seen him do this with is Mike - Eliot’s other love interest - and we know he told Margo during their Trials. This is Q confessing his biggest fear - that if he loses magic, he will lose his tenuous hold on his mental health - and Eliot reciprocating that confession: inducting Q into the very, very select circle of Eliot’s confidantes. This is each of them accepting some measure of comfort from the presence and understanding of the other, and a moment that underpins their entire relationship from this moment forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. I’m cheating with this one, but I wanted to show both sides of this dynamic, and Quentin and Eliot have not had a chance to fight for their relationship together in the main timeline yet, so these will have to work for now. The first gif is from 4x06, A Timeline and Place, and the second is from 3x13, Will You Play With Me? It’s so, so important to see these moments - even if our boys are dumb and they don’t start fighting until the very last second - when they are willing to lay down everything, and burn down the world for each other. Quentin will NOT let the Monster kill Eliot’s body, and Eliot will NOT let Quentin throw away his future to play jailer to a sociopathic child-god. When push comes to shove, they will choose each other every time. Now if we could only get them to do that when the stakes aren’t life and death, am I right?
Tumblr media
5. Another moment from 2x01, Knight of Crowns. This coronation scene is just… Remember that they are fractured leading up to this: we’re coming right off of the fall out from the threesome, and Eliot has been spiraling for episodes now. But then we get this super tender declaration from Quentin: “So, destiny is– it’s bullshit…. For what it’s worth, I think you’re going to be a really good king.” And Eliot’s eyes just, light up, his whole face lifts. Because here is someone who believes in him, wholly and truly. Even after everything they just fucked up together, and separately, Q (someonee good and true) has faith in Eliot, and it’s infectious. They’re both looking at each other here like no one else exists in the world, like nothing is important in this moment except each other. And thats?? Beautiful?!
Tumblr media
4. I fucking love this shot. Q kicking over those tiles and then saying “Oops.” is a whole-ass mood. Okay, so this is obviously from 3x05, A Life in the Day, and I could easily have made and entire top 10 list of JUST moments from this sequence because it’s all SO AMAZING. The beauty of all life, amiright? But this moment is so important to me. Making a conscious choice, every day to choose this quest and choose each other takes a toll. Ask anyone you know who’s been in a committed relationship for years. Sometimes it’s just fucking hard. They’ve been at this for so long that their clothes from Earth (which, I’ll remind you, they were still wearing at their 1 year anniversary) have worn thin, and they’re wearing traditional Fillorian garb. This was supposed to be over years ago, but they’re still going.  And Q is struggling. And Eliot is struggling. And they argue, but neither of them walks away. I always have to stop and pause at this part of the episode, because this is so domestic and realistic that it makes me cry. And if I start crying here, I’m useless for the rest of the sequence once we get to Arielle and Teddy.
Tumblr media
3. 1x01, Unauthorized Magic. So, so many people have talked about Q and El’s first meeting, how Eliot spread himself out on the Brakebills sign elegantly and Quentin’s one bisexual braincell shorted out to the point where, for a moment, he couldn’t even words. But I so rarely see people talk about this moment, when Quentin asks Eliot if he’s hallucinating. This look, right here, is so soft, and sweet. I’m sure Eliot gets hit on all the time, and he was 100% flirting with Quentin when he jumped off that sign and gave him an “I could eat you up” once over. But this is the moment Eliot decided that Margo needed to know about the cute new boy who thought Eliot was exactly the kind of person he would dream into existence, if he made those kinds of decisions. Right here. The beginning of it all.
Tumblr media
2. Back to 3x05, A Life in the Day, and if you’re surprised this is my #2 moment you must be new here. This is a kiss that has been brewing for a long time. One not rooted in emotion bottles, and not one that can be passed off as being too drunk to know what you’re doing. Quentin sets his cup down, and starts to say something, but ends up finishing his thought with this kiss. It’s short, but not tentative, and Eliot is… look at his face. He’s surprised, because he’s pretty sure they fucked up their chances at this a season and a half ago. But Q is there and he’s not apologizing and he’s not panicking, and that gives Eliot the courage to reach out and pull Q back in. And for a little while, it’s not about the quest, it’s not about defeating a monster, it’s not about fixing anything they’ve fucked up. This is just about them.
Tumblr media
1. “Fifty years. Who gets that kind of proof of concept? Peaches and plums, motherfucker. I’m alive in here!” 4x05, Escape from the Happy Place. So, this scene is where I live now, my trashcan, if you will, with these dumb boys and their dumb faces. Eliot’s absolutely perfect timing, and his delight to see Quentin is just- Just beaming out of his face here. This is the first of many chances he’s going to have to set the record straight, and he does it with style. This was a declaration of love - peaches and plums - and one that only Eliot would be able to give, and only Quentin would be able to understand. Q has been so beat down and defeated this episode, like he’s walking through a world that has faded into black and white, but we can see the moment he understands and the light comes back into his eyes. “Eliot’s alive. He’s alive.”
Honorable mentions to: “I’m Team Eliot.”, “Could I maybe have Eliot back?”, “I find you, and I don’t say magic is real, but I do seduce you”, and the extended throne room scene from 3x05/4x05 - which only didn’t make the list because I couldn’t pick a single shot to slice up for a gif.

Lucille and Eliott met when they were both very young, here is a piece of their love story. They truly loved each other, maybe in a wrong way, but love isn’t always an easy thing to live and to do. From 2014 to 2019. From Lucille to Lucas, with a lot of Eliott in the middle.
Lucas
Saturday, March 23, 2019, 9:50 am
Lucille walked slowly through the streets of Paris. It was unusual for the young woman to go out so early on weekends. Lucille wasn't a morning person, yet that day she understood why some people enjoyed walking around town before noon. The air was smooth. It wasn't cold, barely cool. The morning atmosphere was quiet and full of promise. Like a wave of freshness coming to wash away the excesses and mistakes of the night. The partygoers had been home for a long time and had left room for tourists and families to come to the market. For days or even weeks Lucille hadn't been able to enjoy a simple walk in her neighborhood. It was done.
Getting at the café where Lucas and she had deal to meet, she saw the young man already seated on the terrace. Lucille took a deep breath before walking to him slowly. She was stressed. She was afraid of not being able to keep control of her feelings, to fall back into an unfair and unnecessary hatred or worse, to fall in tears in front of the young man she would have preferred never to meet. But this meeting was important, for her, for him and especially for Eliott. "Hi. -Hi." A moment of flutter. Were they supposed to kiss each other? No, the last words they had exchanged had broken Lucas's heart, the kiss would be unwelcome. Shake hands? No, way too formal. As a greeting, Lucas gave her a slight shy smile that Lucille gave back to him. "What are you drinking?” Lucille asked as she sat down on the empty chair opposite the young man. "A café allongé.” He simply replied. "A macchiato, please.” Lucille ordered to one of the waiters. "How is he doing?” Lucille asked, still concerned about Eliott's well-being. "He's fine.” The young man took a moment, he seemed hesitant. "Well I don't know, he's been sleeping since I brought him back in fact. -That's normal.” Lucille remembered all the days spent at Eliott's bedside, the young man sleeping in his bed for days. This terrible feeling of helplessness. Lucas must have felt the same now, she could easily understand him. "So I don't know if it's better that's he stays at my place or... I ...I don't have his parent's number." Lucille would have liked to tell him that at the very moment, where Eliott felt the best, was at his side, it was useless for him to go home. But she didn't have the strength to say so. "It's okay, I told them he was with you. -What did they say? -About what ? The fact that he's staying at your place or that you're a guy?" Without her really wanting it, her voice had taken on an aggressive tone. Shit... It wasn't what she wanted, not at all. She couldn't help herself. To see Lucas worry about anything and everything she had been able to do in the last five years was beyond her grasp. Far from being offended, Lucas looked at her with his deep blue eyes. She blamed herself for being so agressive towards him. To regain composure, Lucille looked away and took a long breath.
"Don't worry Lucas, you're not the first, you know." Lucille, herself, didn't expect to tell him such bitter comment. Again, that's not what she was looking for. Decidedly, she showed herself unable to keep her temper. Lucille hated herself. Lucas looked down, visibly touched by this last remark. "I'm sorry for all this." It was Lucille who was aggressive and he was the one who apologised? For sure, the young woman had badly judged him. And at the same time, it wasn't surprising... Eliott loved Lucas, the latter shouldn't be fundamentally bad. Who was she to doupt about Eliott's love tastes? If she hadn't been so sad, Lucille would have smiled. "You're not the first Lucas, but..." Lucille said. She could not decently leave the young man in uncertainty. Once again, and as Eliott had told her, nothing, absolutely nothing, was his fault. She had to be honest with him, as painful as it sounded. "You're not like the others. He doesn't speak of you like the others, anyway.” Lucille looked back into Lucas's eyes. No wonder Eliot had fallen in love with this boy. He had the most beautiful eyes the young woman had ever seen. Just after Eliott's... Lucille sighed again. She felt tears come to her eyes. She struggled in vain to keep control of herself, she didn't want to be weak in front of Lucas. "That's me who is sorry.” She said in a voice a less assured than before. "You're not a whim. Of course he can love, trust me, I know." Eliott had loved her too, one day, a long time ago. Sadness and nostalgia came to grip Lucille's throat. She couldn't hold back her tears long. Lucas, against all odds, didn't seem to judge her or feel any hatred toward her. On the contrary, everything in him emanated sympathy and kindness. He lowered his eyes. "You must hate me." The young woman's eyes filled with tears. Yes she hated him at one point. A short moment. But that was no longer the case, no more. Unable to utter a single word, she paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and wiped a tear with the sleeve of her sweater. "I envy you, I think. Even at the begining, when everything was good between us, he wasn't like this. I mean uh... not the way he is you.” She had to be honest with Lucas but also with herself. Eliott was sure of himself, sure of his love for Lucas, sure of the feelings he felt for him. Something he had never felt in his relationship with Lucille. He had loved her, yes, but had always doubted, it was a fact. Enough talk about Eliott and her, one more word and she could totally fall in tears, there, in front of Lucas and that wasn't the goal of their meeting, far from it. "But... But that also means you have responsibilities now. He's going to need you.” She said in a confident voice, putting her grief aside. Lucas's gaze changed too. He was no longer sorry for her but seemed determined to support Eliott as best as he could. Lucille felt reassured. Eliott wasn't alone. "What should I do?” Asked the young man. His face features were serious.
"There's no magical formula." It would have been too simple. "First, be patient. Because you won't be able to understand everything or succeed everything on the first try." Lucille thought back about all the mistakes she had made in the past. Lucas would do some too. "And it will not matter." Above all, make him feel better. To avoid the young man being invaded by the same guilt that had plagued Lucille during all these years. If she couldn't get away from it, she now wanted him to be able to do it. "Be understanding, look it up. Read." A little, the minimum to know, not to fall from too high when the things he read in the books will occur in real life. Sometimes ten times worse. "Ask questions too. When he'll agree to answer them." When he'll agree to answer them... That was important. "Above all, try not to rush him." Easier said than done. Lucille hadn't be able to do so, maybe Lucas would be? "If he wants to sleep, let him sleep. If he doesn't want to talk, don't make him talk." Evidences always good to remember. "There will be times when you can just look at him. And you will feel powerless." This feeling of devastating helplessness... Lucille had to warn Lucas. It was the worst of feelings. "But that's the way it is." The sooner he would accept it, the better it would be. "Look out for the signs too. When he's not well or when he's too well." Lucille had become an expert on the subject, may Lucas could become one too... "You won't be able to do much but at least you can anticipate." The least harm to prevent Eliott to suffer too much. "In fact... Just be there for him. But only when he wants or needs it." This advice, Lucille had just understood this, few weeks ago. It was too late for her but not for Lucas. "And when he doesn't want or need it, wait for him. Because he will always come back to you." Almost always. Lucille clenched her fist under the table. "And the most important, Lucas... Enjoy cool moments. There will be some. A lot, even. And these moments will make up for all the others. You'll see." The young woman wiped a small tear at the edge of her eyelashes.
Lucille walked the streets of Paris, enjoying the fresh air of the first spring mornings. Before leaving, she left a letter to Lucas for Eliott. He would read it or not, it was no longer her problem. She thought she would feel devasted after Lucas' meeting but against all odds, the girl felt a little better. Still sad, she nevertheless felt a weight disappear from her shoulders. She felt a little lighter. She had given over to Lucas, had told him everything she'd wanted to tell him. Now she had to move on. Passing over the little square below her house, she met one of the waiters at the bistro where she and her friends had their habits. He greeted her. "Hello Lucille! It's been a while that we didn't see you, it's nice!" The young woman smiled. Perhaps she would, one day, be able to live her life without Eliott? In any case, now, that's what she hoped for.

‘The Magicians’: Summer Bishil on Season 3, the Key to Margo’s Zingers, and the Fairy Queen
(Source)
As The Magicians fans know full well, no one can quite deliver a zinger like Summer Bishil’s Margo. But while Bishil got the opportunity to steal some scenes in the first season of the darkly comic and grounded Syfy fantasy series, the actress really got to shine in Season 2, where the f-bomb-laden Margo came away the MVP of the year. We saw far more shades of her character as Margo and Eliot (Hale Appleman) found themselves rulers of Fillory, dealing with a multitude of real af issues ranging from famine to god murder, and Bishil stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, balancing pitch-perfect comedy and deeply emotional drama with ease.
As we head into The Magicians Season 3, which premieres tonight, January 10th, at 9pm ET, Margo faces even greater challenges than before, and I recently got the opportunity to speak with Bishil about her work on the show and what lies ahead for Margo in the third season. With magic gone, Margo’s not only trying to rule Fillory, but is also having to do the bidding of the Fairy Queen and her companions, which pushes Margo to her limit.
During the course of our conversation Bishil reflected on how she first came to be a part of the show, and how working with executive producer/co-showrunner Sera Gamble helped her nail the character of Margo. She also talked about Margo’s arc in Season 2, and getting to play both high comedy and heavy drama throughout the season. And of course we discussed what challenges await Margo in Season 3, her scenes with Candis Cayne’s Fairy Queen, and a specific standout scene she has with Eliot in the premiere. Bishil also talked about how her working relationship with Appleman has evolved over the course of the series, and how hard it was to do so many scenes without him this year.
It was a delight of a conversation from an actress who’s doing some truly terrific work on one of the most exciting shows on TV right now, so if you’re a Magicians fan, I think you’ll find it insightful. Read the full interview below and click here to read my review of Season 3.
Going back a bit, and I’m sure you’ve been asked this question a lot, but I’m curious what headspace you were at when you first signed on to this show. What was your reaction to that pilot script and had you read the books before?
SUMMER BISHIL: I was not aware that it was a book series when I was auditioning. The audition came through like any other audition, and I’ll be honest I needed a job. So I think anything was exciting at that point (laughs), but I loved the material. It was particularly exciting to me, it wasn’t this procedural material that I had been used to reading for some time. It was more interesting. It was younger, it felt unique. And so when I went in I had this really great, specific material that Sera Gamble had written for Margo, and I read for Sera actually, she was there the first time I read for Margo. It was hard to read the room—I felt like I had nailed it, and I obviously did since I booked it, but it was really hard to read the room at that point. I loved this material so much because I had this great monologue that was very book-esque—now that I’ve read the books—about a quest in the desert and everything that I had gone through, and all this great juicy stuff so I really wanted it.
When I found out I got the callback I went in to test and [director] Mike Cahill was on Skype and I did my thing and then everyone was in the room. I guess I may have been going in the wrong direction and Sera very quickly gave me some insight into who she is and some of the things that happen in the series that sort of got me right back on the track that I needed to be on, and I’d like to think probably saved me booking the job.
Margo was a really interesting character in Season 1 and your performance really popped, but the jump to Season 2 was pretty huge. You were the MVP of last season, balancing the one-liners and zingers with some really emotionally intense scenes. I was curious how you felt about that balance and Margo’s arc last year?
BISHIL: Well thank you for saying that. Last year I had so much fun, mainly because like you said my character expanded and there were so many more opportunities to reach and layers that I could sort of lay the groundwork with for her, because we didn’t really know a lot about her, and it isn’t a book, so there are some liberties that I can take. And as far as the comedy and drama, for me what always helped me ground Margo within this material, because it would be very easy to fly off the handle—and you could do that for a scene every once in a while, but nobody’s gonna want to invest in your character if that’s what you’re doing all the time. So for me it’s always to play the stakes, and the stakes are always high especially in Fillory, specifically being a Queen and having a kingdom at stake and other peoples’ well-being. So that sort of grounds me. That’s what I like to do on the day, I take the material as whimsical and kooky as it is, find the emotional truths in it, find the long-term objective, and really arc it out. For me, if I believe it then hopefully the audience will.
That’s one of the high points of the show is that you can have these very 2017 or 2018 one-liners fit right into this fantasy world because you buy the interactions between these characters.
BISHIL: And a lot of times too I’ll infer meaning. For instance if Margo says something particularly kooky and crazy—I mean you know how kooky some of her lines can get—I’ll think about what she’s actually saying, I’ll literally say it in my head. It sounds like I’m saying ‘I think about the subtext’ (laughs), but I do it in a much more obvious and conscious way where I’m basically saying something else while I’m saying the dialogue.
That kind of explains how these one-liners land so well. Season 2 ends with Margo making an incredibly ballsy deal with the devil, so to speak. Heading into Season 3, what were some of your hopes or expectations for where Margo would go, and how did the scripts stack up once you learned what your storyline would be this season?
BISHIL: Well after such a great season, and it’s a large ensemble and it’s a quickly moving show, I tried not to have expectations because I felt like I had been gifted such a really great season and I was just happy we got picked up. But when I started reading scripts, I was immediately blown away. The wealth of material that I had to work with, the situations that Margo gets herself into and is placed into this year are insanely funny but also have so much emotional heart. It was really a great season for me and for Margo, and there was a lot to do, and there’s a huge arc for her. We end in Season 2 with her almost fantasizing about being a dictator, which is completely at odds philosophically with her friends, and you’re kind of wondering if she’s just this whole time kinda kooky and a little crazy. But you really see her evolve over the course of this season from where we see her last, and into somebody more mindful and patient and a really well-rounded, thoughtful ruler.
This year we do get to see more of Margo the Ruler, but she’s also forced to do the bidding of the Fairy Queen. What was it like to explore that dynamic with Candis Cayne?
BISHIL: Oh man it was incredible. Candis has such a presence when she walks into a room naturally, just as herself, but when you put her in the fairy makeup and you put her into the wardrobe that we have and she’s there, it’s very much a force that enters the room, so your behavior naturally shifts to pay attention to this woman in the room that’s talking to you and laying out demands. And the way she delivers her character is very quiet, and she takes her time with what she says, so there’s a lot of slowing down and a lot of listening, which drives my character insane. For me what I thought about, specifically in the beginning episodes, was how crazy it was driving me. Taking away my little bit of power that I have, even as far back as Brakebills Margo desperately needs to feel OK, this is like her worst nightmare. Another woman running the show, Margo almost cannot tolerate it. I wanted the audience to see and find Margo in a place of just crazed frenzy and anger and the rage simmering underneath, because she puts people in their place and for once she can’t. She’s got all these witty little comebacks that she can’t even say and it’s driving her crazy, it’s like torture (laughs). I think physical pain would’ve been better for Margo because she would’ve been able to speak her mind. Silencing her is the worst thing you could do to her.
I have to ask about a specific scene in the premiere episode between Eliot and Margo, and it involves speaking in code using pop culture references. It’s one of my favorite things the show has ever done. What was your reaction when you read that in the script, and what was it like to film?
BISHIL: Well I mean we knew that scene was special. Hale and I both sort of said to each other without saying it, ‘We can’t mess this up.’ It was a great scene, a great opportunity to demonstrate some comedy, it’s gotta be quick, we’ve gotta know what we’re doing, so we really rehearsed that scene. I mean a lot of times we’ll talk about our work, Hale and I, but at this point we’re sort of in tune with each other. But this scene specifically he came to my house and we ran the lines and worked the material and we got it to a place where it was so quick that it just sort of fell off of our tongues, because we knew it needed to be fast and we couldn’t rely on editing to take out those spaces because for that kind of comedy to work it has to be so quickly delivered and lived in. So we really put a lot of effort into that because we absolutely loved the scene and wanted it to work.
It’s fantastic, I was cracking up. And your work with Hale is a highlight of the show and I think you guys make one of the best dynamic duos on TV right now. What’s your working relationship like? It feels so natural and it’s a joy to watch because there’s a love there between the two characters.
BISHIL: Honestly, there’s a love between him and I. I love him, I have so much respect for him and his work ethic. I was much more spontaneous when I first started this show, I would show up to set like, ‘Hey what are we doing today? Cool!’ That’s how I worked because that’s kind of how my character was, but I saw the value and merit in the process that Hale brought because I worked so much with him. Obviously I had my process, but it was much more instinctual at that point. But his was very disciplined and purposeful and I just really admired his work ethic, and it rubbed off on me and I think helped me because I’m not in a lot of scenes with him in Season 3, so I couldn’t rely on this natural chemistry and back and forth and banter that’s so fun (laughs). Yeah I adore him. I don’t know if I’ll ever have this kind of chemistry or this much fun with someone ever again. It’s really special.
As you said Margo is on her own a lot this season, and I think you more than hold your own. But the characters are really spread out this year. Does that allow you to kind of watch the show fresh, because Margo’s in Fillory while all these other things are happening other places?
BISHIL: It does kinda! Like I never work with Stella. I mean I know what she’s doing because we’re friends and we’ll talk about it, but I’m never on set with her, I never see the actors that are brought in for that storyline, the guest stars. And Olivia, the first season we worked together a little bit, but there was just nothing this year, we didn’t have a lot together at all. So when we all sat down to watch the first four episodes, they released a couple for us when we were still filming and we met up at Arjun’s house and we all watched it together, I think each of us had like this new viewing process for each of the given storylines because we’re so separated.
So are you guys done filming now?
BISHIL: We are. We just finished I think three weeks ago, not even.
What can you tease about Margo’s road ahead this season?
BISHIL: Well I think Margo’s got her work cut out for her. Her interests right now are maintaining the kingdom and gaining ownership of the kingdom again, because the fairies have come in on their horse you know (laughs). I think that’s her main objective, I don’t think she’s gonna give it up easy. And I think you’ll learn why it’s so important to her, because at this point you don’t other than that she’s this power-hungry control freak. So you learn a little bit more about why the things that are important to Margo are important to her, and what she’s willing to do to fight for them and how courageous she really is.
The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy.

Parker and Hardison! :)
ship: ew / nonono / maybe / i ship it / aww / otp / MY HEART
PREEETTZZEEEEELLLLLSSS!!!!!
I love this ship SO MUCH because everything about it is AMAZING.  Like here are these two people, each with their own abilities and backgrounds and issues.  Parker: twenty pounds of crazy in a five pound bag, leaping off rooftopsHardison: a twenty-something year old man with a computer and a problem with authority, hacking into anything anywhere anytime
GOSH I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY.  I love how the Hardison and Parker’s friendship grows over the course of the show.  They go from not exactly trusting each other to being like family to falling in love and it is so wonderful.  Parker pushes Hardison out of his comfort zone and Hardison calms down and comforts Parker when she is upset or afraid.  Both had experiences in the foster system, but Parker’s was pretty awful and Haridson’s was pretty good.  Hardison just really GETS Parker, and even when he doesn’t fully understand how her mind is working he is super patient with her.  And Parker truly opens up and learns to trust Hardison, and the two grow together.
I love the episode where Parker wants to rescue the Russian orphans but she also doesn’t want them to be in the foster system and turn out like her and she is crying but Hardison tells her that its ok, he likes how she turned out and it is just THE BEST and I think that was when I started shipping them for real, like, I had considered them as a pairing before but I also kind of liked the idea of Parker and Eliot?  (That ship is really my brotp now)
Other favorite Parker and Hardison episodes: the one where Hardison gets buried alive, and Parker is the one who keeps him calm and and gosh when he gets out and Parker is a mess (also brotp moment where Eliot crushes Hardison in a hug) and also the episode where Parker can’t figure out how to move fluidly with the weighted boots and she is failing at dancing and Hardison dances with her and than later he hums into her earpiece and it is SO BEAUTIFUL
ALSO when Parker starts to have feelings for Hardison and she doesn’t know how to articulate them (though she crushes a beer bottle out of jealousy and that was amazing) and Hardison knows what she is feeling and he already loves her but he doesn’t push her to say that which she is not comfortable yet, and when she says she loves pretzels and he just smiles and says that the pretzels will be there waiting for her when she is ready AAAAAAAAHHHHHH
I LOVE PARKER AND HARDISON WITH MY WHOLE SOUL

THE MAGICIANS — “A Timeline and Place” Episode 406 — Pictured: (l-r) Arjun Gupta as Penny Adiyodi, Kacey Rohl as Marina — (Photo by: Eike Schroter/SYFY)
Last week’s The Magicians was a tearjerker for a lot of these characters now realizing what is at stake and the price of being vulnerable. However, as I also said, there was also a greater mystery at play here that was seeming to fly under the radar. Fortunate for us that this week just so happens to be the episode where what was questioned could now come to light.
This week’s episode was much different from what you would have expected. A lot of the things that have been neglected this season were finally given the room to be explored whether it be Penny 23 and Marina’s place in this timeline, the current state of Fillory, or the uncertain future of Alice. Let’s start with Penny 23 and Marina. That was one of the more unique twist that came this season because there was no telling who was coming after these two or for what reason. The fact that it was both of them definitely would have led one to conclude that this has something to do with them not belonging in this timeline. This subplot was intriguing for everything that would lead to an emphasis on where Penny 23’s relevance stands. I hate to say it, but I kind of enjoy this Penny more because he shows a lot more personality, and did so in such a short amount of time. It doesn’t hurt to care, and he cares a lot. If anyone questioned whether he might be used as some throwaway character down the road, this episode made you think twice.
Which brings me to our Penny. They told us that we would eventually see him again in what I think was actually this episode. It was very enjoyable to see how he has changed since his time with the Underworld branch. He knows some things, but he too understands where he belongs in the grand scheme of things. How they handled two Pennys interacting with each other was entertaining for everything about these two that was put on blast.
The state of Fillory is always going to be something for us to come back to. For a place where time moves differently, it mattered to be able to keep up with what has been going either right o wrong on this world. Predictably things would go wrong, but it’s not very interesting if there wasn’t something to challenge Margo and company in ways they haven’t been tested before. Adding Josh to the mix made for a great balance as well when someone has to be able to even out the bitch who resides within Margo. This part of the episode did leave me with some mixed feelings with that said. On one hand you can’t get enough of Margo taking charge and getting things done her way, on the other hand it was odd how easy it was for her to slip back into some troublesome habits. Maybe this is because she refuses to properly manage her feelings about losing Eliot, but it stings to see her take a step backwards.

After last week’s episode, there would of course have to be some response to understanding that Eliot is still alive somewhere in there. This was the right kind of motivation that Quentin has needed in this story and shakes things up because this is the first time in a while that he has truly put his heart into fighting for someone. It was one thing to see Eliot come to terms with the direction of his affections, but it was another thing entirely to see this from Quentin, despite his actions being so indirect. There’s probably a build-up to the actual words coming out, and right now it should be worth the wait.
Up till now I would have assumed that Alice’s story would have ended with her imprisonment in the Library. Who would have guessed that she would find a way to break free? Or this all still part of her story and she will ultimately end up back in that cell? Who knows! And that is what makes the future of Alice so uncertain. After leaving Quentin and the rest, it was anyone’s guess where her story would take her from there. Where it did was an excellent choice for what has also been neglected about the problem that is the Library. Through Alice we were somehow able to experience the wonders of magic once more, while also diving into the pitfalls that come with the wrong people in charge of it. This season hyped up a fight for magic, and now was better than later to start giving us a taste of what that looks like. Or at the very least assure us that the Library was still a threat.
The Magicians “A Timeline and Place” covered a lot of bases that you would have thought this season would not have been able to handle initially. I remember at some point saying that there was too much going on at once, though this week’s episode put me at ease that some things you just have to be patient for. There’s still the question of the whereabouts of Kady and Irene, but all good things come in time.
