Twilight
“In hindsight, I probably should have known what it meant,” Alex groans, bringing both hands up to cover her face. “I made sure that I only hung up the posters that had Kristen Stewart on them.”
Kara remembers all those posters, the too pale boys possessively flanking the movies’ main female character. She’d always wondered why Alex was so into the Twilight series; they were all just…so bad. Now it made more sense.
“Aw, babe,” Kelly teases, “let me know if you want me to reenact any of your teenage dreams about biting. I’m game.”
Alex groans again, but this time it’s accompanied by a bright blush.
Laughter fills the room. They’ve been sharing stories about their first significant celebrity crushes for the last few minutes, the board game temporarily abandoned in front of them.
Kara has learned that Nia had a thing for Keanu Reeves after watching that bomb on a bus movie one too many times, but that she also “wouldn’t have kicked Sandra Bullock off her bed”, as she put it.
Brainy mentioned that he went through a rather intense phase of trying to learn more about Earth culture, specifically American pop culture, and that he got stuck on the OG Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, for a while. Not a bad choice, Kara thinks while Nia jokes that she’d be more than happy to tie him up with a lasso.
Kelly then rattles off a few actors that Kara thinks were on the L Word, with a particular emphasis on Jennifer Beals. Kara half expects Alex to make a joke about Flashdance, but instead, Alex simply leans into Kelly and presses a soft kiss to her cheek.
When they get to Kara, she has to disappoint.
“I don’t think I have anything to offer here. Not really.”
Alex hums. “The posters on your walls were all images from the Hubble telescope. I mean, I know you liked NSYNC for their music, but I don’t think you ever swooned over any of them. Not really. There was definitely a mental love affair with Lilo and Stitch, though.”
When Alex mentions the Hubble images, Kara feels a cool pale hand slip into hers to give it a short squeeze. It’s brief, a quick show of support, but it means everything to Kara. She turns to Lena and smiles gratefully. At the same time, the attention of the rest of their friend group shifts to Lena as well.
But Lena just shrugs. “I definitely wasn’t allowed to hang up any posters in the Luthor mansion.”
“Yeah, but what about boarding school? Come on, Luthor,” Alex probes, “you can’t tell me there wasn’t a ton of celebrity gossip going around at an all-girls school.”
“Oh there was gossip alright. I can’t say I ever really knew what it was about, though. I didn’t really watch movies or TV growing up, so most of the names the girls were talking about meant nothing to me.”
This time, it’s Kara who squeezes Lena’s hand. She knows that Lena doesn’t like to talk about what growing up was like for her. She doesn’t like the pitying looks, or the constant assumptions that just because her family was rich, Lena must have had everything she ever wanted. But before the mood in the room turns too gloomy, Lena sits up a little, a small smirk on her face.
“So maybe I was a bit of a late bloomer that way. I would say I had my first real celebrity crush in my early 20s.”
That gets everyone’s attention.
“Oh really? Who was it?” Nia asks gleefully.
“Well, I was still in Metropolis at the time. But I had watched them on TV, followed their budding celebrity status.”
Lena pauses for a moment before she turns to face Kara more fully.
“And then I gave Jack Spheer an impassioned speech about why I had to move to National City, about how important it was to me to be the Luthor living in the same city as Supergirl. I believe I even said I wanted to share my home with her.”
There’s a stunned silence in the room for a few seconds before Alex barks out a laugh.
“Really? Your celebrity crush was Supergirl?”
And Kara considers if she should intervene, tell Alex to lay off on the heavy teasing she knows is going to happen now, but Lena is looking at her and she’s still smiling, calm and confident, and Kara simply smiles right back.
Lena chuckles, her eyes never leaving Kara’s. “Of course it was. I mean, have you seen that skintight suit and very, very short skirt she was in at the time?”
“Ugh,” Alex huffs, “I didn’t need to hear that. That’s my sister you’re talking about.”
Lena shrugs again. “You asked, I answered.”
And then she leans in and kisses Kara and Kara makes a mental note to figure out how to send a message to Winn into the future to thank him for his incredibly “male gaze” costume design for her first Supersuit.
(She does very much prefer the pants these days, though.)

"I've always wondered what it would be like to kiss you" would be a cute supercorp if you're still bored/ taking kissing asks ^_____^
Thanks for the ask!
“I always wondered what it would be like to kiss you.”
---
Kara just might kill Alex as she zigzags her way across the room towards the kitchen, managing to avoid every single stupid piece of mistletoe that’s currently attached to her sister’s ceiling.
It’s awkward enough having to kiss anyone under mistletoe, let alone someone in her family. There are two couples in the room, the rest of them single, and either way, getting caught with any of them under mistletoe sounds like a nightmare.
Besides Esme that is, when she saw the little girl standing under one of the many hanging sprigs, Kara had taken a couple of quick side steps to bring herself under the plant too, scooping her niece into her arms and pressing a smacking kiss to Esme’s cheek that had the young girl giggling in her arms.
(She’s actively trying not to imagine what would happen if she got caught under mistletoe with Lena).
Alex and Kelly are the two that have been caught the most, Kara suspecting that’s the reason why there’s so much mistletoe in the first place. Winn and Brainy shared an incredibly awkward kiss and Winn and James shared a not so awkward one, which Kara makes a mental note to ask Winn about later.
So yes, she’s actively avoiding the plant at all costs, which is easier said than done when she’s walking back to the living room, more snacks in hand, and she looks up and sees Lena walking towards her. Lena smiles, one of her soft smiles that crinkles the corner of her eyes and always makes Kara’s heart skip a beat, breath getting caught in her chest.
It’s maybe a little bit her fault what happens next, because her mind focuses solely on that smile and how beautiful Lena is, and she trips, sending the plate of cookies she’d just grabbed cascading across the floor.
Her cheeks heat as she bends down to try and salvage at least some of them, pouting at the mess and waste of cookies now on the floor.
Lena helps, which only makes the blush spread down her neck when she remembers that Lena was a witness to her clumsiness.
“Thank you,” Kara says, returning the plate to the kitchen with one last sad look.
(She’s not above eating floor food, but she’s not going to let Lena know that, she’ll just eat them later).
“You-“ Lena starts, only to be cut off by a shout from Alex across the room.
Kara freezes, knowing immediately what’s happening even though Alex only called out her name. And sure enough, with a glance up, Kara sees mistletoe hanging right about her.
And not just above her, but Lena too.
“I…” Kara’s about to protest but trails off when she looks back down to find green eyes close. There’s a light blush on Lena’s cheeks and that same soft smile on her lips and Kara falls even more in love.
“I guess we have no choice but to kiss,” Lena says, tucking her hair behind her ear in what Kara recognises as a nervous gesture.
“We don’t have to,” Kara says quietly. Despite the teasing they’ll get, Kara’s not going to do something that’ll make Lena uncomfortable.
“I want to.” Lena’s throat bobs. “If you do too.”
Kara does, she really really does.
Lena’s leaning forward and then Kara is too, the pound of Lena’s heartbeat filling her ears, a similar beat to her own.
They meet in the middle, noses bumping and Lena lets out a small laugh, the sound swallowed when Kara slots their mouths together properly.
Lena sighs and Kara feels fingers tangle in her sweater.
She’s never been happier about dropping food in her life.
“I always wondered what it would be like to kiss you,” Kara says, no time to be embarrassed by the words when Lena smiles.
“So have I.”
Kara’s heart skips. “Maybe we could do it again sometime?”
Lena laughs, eyes bright. “Are you asking me out?”
Kara’s brain isn’t working right now, words spilling from her mouth without thought. “If I am, would you say yes?”
“Yes.”
Kara beams, taking two steps away from Lena, the fingers gripping her shirt causing Lena to follow. The move brings them under another bunch of mistletoe.
“Well, would you look at that.”
Lena laughs before she kisses her again.

Sometimes Lena doesn’t know when to relax. She knows this, is more than aware that she’s the definition of a workaholic. So sometimes she enlists the help of Kara to remind her that it’s time to put the research and documents down.
Kara, of course, takes the job very seriously, and has developed a number of methods for seducing Lena away from her CEO duties. Though she’s found the most effective one is what she lovingly calls the Nap Maneuver.
Though, when Lena’s feeling particularly grumpy, she refers to it as the Sleeper Hold.
Kara just waits for her moment, and when Lena sets her device to the side for just a second, she strikes. Lena finds herself wrapped tight in Kara’s arms and moved to the nearest comfortable surface for nap time.
Direct Action.
And really, Lena can’t stay upset for long. Not when she’s comfy and warm, with a sleepy Kryptonian nuzzling the back of her neck.

Supercorp + Hogwarts AU + meet messy + "is that the best you can do?"
“Hey, do you guys want to see a muggle magic trick?”
Kara doesn’t have to look up to know Alex and Kelly are exchanging glances over Nia’s head. Nia is the best witch in the fifth year hands-down, but her grasp of muggle illusions leave a lot to be desired.
“Sure…” Kelly agrees, politely but unsurely, while Alex shakes her head.
“If this is that stupid coin trick again, Nia—” she starts, but Nia is already squeezing between them on the grass, unfolding a pack of muggle playing cards.
“It is not,” Nia says. “Prepare to be amazed! Yvette says I’m really good at this one.”
“Oh, joy,” Alex mutters under her breath, which turns into a pained yelp when Kelly elbows her in the ribs.
Kara finally raises her gaze from the newspaper she’s been half-reading, fully prepared to commit to Nia’s trick, but then she catches a glimpse of dark hair and a brisk pace. It’s Lena Luthor, notorious loner, actually sitting outside by the black lake with her books.
It’s odd—Lena never sits outside. People talk; Lena doesn’t have many friends (someone even started a rumor that Lillian Luthor pays Jess, another sixth year, to hang out with Lena). In fact, the only time anyone really sees Lena is in class, or in the Slytherin common room when Jess is also there. Kara sees her even less (only when Slytherin and Gryffindor share classrooms), but that doesn’t make the hopeless crush she’s fostered on her since they were eleven any less potent.
Kelly starts clapping suddenly, reluctantly dragging Kara’s eyes from Lena (who is reading a book; Kara is wondering just what kind of book it is). “Aw, Nia, that was good!” she says. “Do it again!”
Even Alex is curiously lifting up the cards one by one, as if trying to determine the trick herself. “Did you use actual magic for this?” she asks.
“I’m just that good,” Nia brags, though the way she tries to expertly shuffle the cards right back into their box suggests otherwise; half of them spill onto the grass. “Oh man!”
“I’ve got this,” Kara says, absentmindedly reaching for her wand. “Accio—”
“Kara, no!”
Oh, that’s right, Kara thinks belatedly. My wand is broken. It had been an unfortunate event on the Quidditch pitch involving an overzealous Hufflepuff seeker (Winn is still very apologetic about it, but it can’t be helped now). Unfortunately, Kara never seems to quite remember that magic is off-limits until it can be fixed.
And even more unfortunate is the fact that her mind and her words have begun to converge; she’s thinking about the book Lena is reading while glancing at the cards, and her mouth is forming silent words, and really it’s not a surprise at all when said book rockets out of Lena’s hands and aims right for Nia’s head.
No one dies, though, nor do they have to make the unpleasant trudge to the infirmary—Kelly is far quicker than any of Kara’s botched magic, and the book explodes into nothing when she mutters a firm, “Evanesco.”
“Kelly!” Kara forgets, for a second, about the whole Nia-about-to-break-her-face thing; her heart drops to the pit of her stomach at the thought that something of Lena Luthor’s has been reduced to figurative dust. What if that book was personal? What if it was special? What if it was—
“Excuse me,” says a quiet, sudden voice, and Kara just about falls over in the grass at the sight of Lena Luthor standing there. “I think you summoned my book.”
Kelly winces. “Oh, actually—”
“I destroyed it,” Kara blurts out, because really, this is her fault and Nia still has a face so the least Kara can do is take a fall for a friend. “I’m sorry. My wand is broken, and I was trying to summon some cards, but I was looking at you and thinking about your book and it just…I’m sorry. Again. I can pay for it?” She immediately begins digging into the pockets of her robes, but all she manages to scrounge up is a broken sugar quill and a drawing on a torn sheet of paper that depicts Professor Grant as a dragon.
For a moment, all Lena does is stare down at Kara in a peculiarly quizzical way. She doesn’t seem mad or anything, just perplexed. A second later she says, “You were thinking about ‘Voyages with Vampires’ strongly enough to summon it? I don’t really enjoy Gilderoy Lockhart books myself.”
“To be fair,” Kara’s quick to defend herself, “I couldn’t read the title from this far.”
“Right. You decided you wanted to snatch my book from me because it was mine.” And just like that, the curious expression on Lena’s face drops entirely, twists into something resigned and exhausted. “Is that the best you can do? Petty little child games?”
“What? No, I would never—”
“Because last week Eve Tessmacher hit me with a furnunculus curse that was far more clever than this,” Lena all but sneers. “It’s always the pig-headed Gryffindors that aim out of their league.”
“You wanna say that again?” Alex is jumping up, her wand brandished out, and Lena glances from her to Kara to Kelly to Nia, as if just realizing how potentially outnumbered she could be.
Except, well, that’s so not the issue. Kara hastens to stand between Alex’s wand and Lena’s body, nearly knocking her sister over in the process. “No! No, I didn’t do that as a prank, I—” She pauses, feels her cheeks go hot, and then rushes out, “Ijustthinkyou’rereallypretty!”
Alex lowers her wand; Kara can tell, because Alex uses it to jab her in the ribs. “Oh, bloody hell,” Alex grumbles, and she nudges Kelly to join her. “I think that’s our cue. I’d rather study for Potions than watch this.”
Kelly obligingly drags Nia along, who looks like she wants to protest, but eventually Nia caves in—though not without trying to wink conspiringly at Kara, which doesn’t work because Nia “winks” with both eyes.
“But—” Kara watches as her friends scatter, and then she is left with the heavy, accusatory gaze of Lena Luthor. She tries to smile, but imagines her attempt is more of a wince than anything. “Did I mention that I’m sorry?”
Lena takes a step forward. She raises her chin in the air, no less guarded, but her eyes convey a tiny bit of that earlier curiosity all the same. “You’ve already had your fun, Kara Danvers,” she says. “But I will give you credit, no one has played the ‘I have a crush on you’ prank yet.”
Kara frowns. “Do people really play pranks on you so much?”
“I am the weird little sister of a boy who tried to blow up Hogwarts,” Lena all but deadpans. “What do you think?”
“I think you’re way more than Lex Luthor’s sister, and that’s just...really mean,” Kara says, words bursting out before she even pauses to rein them in. “I mean, you are so smart! Last year you saved a bunch of first years who wandered into the Forbidden Forest. A-and you never tried out for Quidditch, but sometimes you fly with Jess on the pitch and you’re so fast you could easily run circles around anyone on the Slytherin team. You’re the coolest person ever. Even when you were eleven, you—” Finally, her brain starts to catch up with her mouth, and Kara flushes hotter than she ever thought possible. “Oh, gosh. I’m sorry. I swear, I didn’t mean for that to sound…stalker-y. I only know about the first year thing because Professor Grant’s son was new that year and I was supposed to be babysitting him. And then the flying, well, sometimes I go to the pitch with Winn whenever he wants to practice—”
“Kara. You can breathe any time you want,” Lena prompts, and Kara pauses to do exactly that.
“Sorry,” Kara adds, again, after she’s let her lungs rest a bit. Her whole body feels shivery from head to toe, like she is seconds away from fainting, and honestly? She just might. “Anyway. Um. I can replace that book if you want. Or I can give you the money and you can pick out a better one, since you said you weren’t a fan? Whatever you want.”
Lena is quiet for a beat. “What were you going to say before? About when I was eleven?”
Kara bites her lip so hard she knows she will inevitably have to ask Kelly to heal it later. “Oh, that,” she says evasively. “I meant, when you were eleven, and I walked face-first into the wrong wall trying to get to platform nine and three quarters, and you didn’t even laugh at me. You just...helped me up, and promised you would walk with me to the train until I found my family again.”
“I remember,” Lena says, and her voice is softening, as is her expression. “You somehow got lost between platforms seven and eight. Your sister was furious when she caught up with us.”
“Yeah.” And Kara finds herself smiling at that memory; this time it’s a real smile, and she couldn’t stop it if she tried. “That was really nice.” She wants to mention more—how even when Lillian Luthor scowled at Kara’s hand-me-downs, Lena complimented her right away on the shirt that had once been Alex’s—but all Kara does right now is step back. “I’ve bothered you enough, I think. Will you…let me know? About the book?”
“I don’t care about the book,” Lena says, and she swallows, loud enough that Kara can hear it. “Do you mean it?”
“That you’re...nice?”
“Yes.” Lena’s cheeks are a faint pink color, and Kara’s entire mouth goes dry.
“Well, yeah,” Kara says, and in that moment—with Lena blushing, and Kara’s chest tightening—they both know that she’s confessing to so much more than thinking Lena is nice. “So. Um.” She squares her shoulders, and prepares to be brave enough to live up to the Gryffindor name: “Can I buy you something that’s not a book? Sometime? Maybe on our next trip to Hogsmeade?”
“Like a date?” Lena asks, so impossibly soft, and Kara nods.
“Exactly like a date,” Kara says, and honestly, she should demand ten points to Gryffindor herself because her voice does not waver once.
And Lena Luthor smiles, just cautious enough to show how unsure she is, but still warm enough that Kara’s heart skips a beat. “Okay,” she says. “But on one condition: I’ll handle any magic until then.”
“Deal,” Kara agrees, and it’s official; breaking her wand might have been the best thing that has ever happened to her, ever.

Alex Danvers wasn’t phased by much. Had she expected to get an alien sister? No. But she went along with it (eventually) and was a good sister. Had she expected to get recruited by a government agency? No. But that was fine, and she was good at her job. Had she expected to be gay? Also no. But she accepted it and she was… well she was a disaster on that front, but she was happy.
The one time that she possibly, maybe, perhaps faltered a little, and thought, ‘this cannot possibly be my life now’, however, was during the months after the arrival of one Lena Luthor to National city.
———
“Alex! I broke Lena Luthor’s chair!”
Alex whirled around to see Supergirl anxiously striding towards her through the DEO, whisper-shouting her name. “You did what?”
Kara came to a stop in front of her, nervously wringing her hands. “I broke Lena Luthor’s chair.”
Alex blinked. “How? I thought you and Clark were just interviewing her?”
“We were! I was just standing behind one of the chairs in front of her desk and holding the back of it and then she looked at me and I wasn’t expecting it and a bit of the chair just kind of broke off in my hand. I tried to squish it back into place and tucked the chair under the desk but I think you might be able to tell if you looked too closely.”
Alex sighed. “Okay. Don’t worry, I’ll get it fixed.”
Kara deflated with relief and grinned. “Thanks Alex.”
Ten minutes later, Alex phoned the L-corp lobby with an excuse to get Lena down there while J’onn phased through her balcony door and swapped the very obviously hand-shaped-dented chair with a new one that would hopefully go unnoticed. She had naively thought that that would be the end of it.
———
A week and a half later, Alex got a panicked phone call from Kara claiming that she had seen Lena at a restaurant and stayed to have brunch with her but there was now a large chunk of table missing from where they had been sitting, caused by Lena laughing at one of her jokes. Suspicion had begun to creep into the back of Alex’s mind but she was too exasperated to pay it any attention.
Kara said she had managed to cover it up with an empty bread basket and persuade Lena they should go to see the crepe stand that had been at the park recently.
Alex, Winn and James had arrived at the restaurant half an hour later in fake uniforms and a fake van, claiming a table replacement had been ordered by the restaurant management. They quickly set up the new table and took away the cornerless one along with the piece of wood that had Kara’s fingerprints permanently embedded in it.
———
Over the next few months, they replaced glasses, vases, windows, tables, chairs, various cutlery, and an array of annoyingly abstract decorations that had to be specially 3D printed because no replacements existed.
A new section of the DEO budget had to be put aside, labelled ‘Cleanup’, and the superfriends became unofficially known as ‘The Cleanup Squad’ (although Winn only said it out loud once, given Alex’s thinly veiled threat afterwards).
It wasn’t until Alex witnessed one of the events that preceded the need for The Cleanup Squad that her subconscious suspicions hit her like the ton of bricks they would have to fix.
It was a standard game night with a shot too many and a brain cell too few, all of them shouting over a game of two truths one lie, when the delivery guy arrived with their food.
Kara went to get the door while Lena had her go. That was the first mistake.
Kara had been sneaking alien alcohol into her drink for the past hour.
Lena’s third sentence was ‘I’m more often attracted to women than men’.
Kara’s foot went through her floorboards with a crunch and she stumbled into her front door, making the whole wall tremble worryingly. Alex shouted out one of the other sentences as a guess to distract Lena from looking behind her to see what the noise was. That was the next mistake.
Kara took the food from a slightly confused looking delivery guy, thanking him and checking the bags as he walked away, as Lena cheered, wine sloshing around in her glass.
“Alex wins! Women are hot and I like to kiss them.”
The door came off its hinges in Kara’s hand and as she went to correct her mistake she smashed it into the doorframe with enough force to bring down a plane. The door, doorframe and half the wall collapsed to the floor, leaving a shellshocked Kara among the rubble, holding a useless doorknob.
Nia slung her arm across Lena’s shoulders to stop her turning around again and cheered. “Woohoo! That’s great! Hey can you teach me how to win at Monopoly?”
Lena frowned. “But only half of us have had a go at-”
“Yeah! You guys set up Monopoly while I go get snacks with James.” Alex not-so-subtly dragged James up with her, glaring at Winn. “What about you, Winn?”
He jumped up with a nervous laugh. “I need the toilet! Yep!”
They all scurried off to where Kara was just standing and blinking. Alex took the food and doorknob from her hands, putting the food on the counter and the doorknob in a nearby vase while Winn and James started haphazardly piling bricks back up into a wall-ish shape. Nia and Brainy seemed to be going through every single Monopoly card and asking Lena about it in a kind of terrifyingly over enthusiastic pop quiz.
Kara snapped out of her daze and began helping as Alex sent a message to the DEO to get a new door there as quickly as possible. She dragged Kara out into the hall and made her laservision off the entire door and doorframe of her neighbour who was luckily currently on holiday. While Kara did that, she kicked the old bits of door and brick dust under a rug in the hall.
Kara fit the new door into the hole that James and Winn were leaving, blowing her freezebreath over the whole wall to freeze it all in place for the time being.
Before she could go back inside, Alex grabbed Kara by the arm. She raised an eyebrow at Kara’s confused look. “Want to explain what just happened?”
Kara blushed and glanced at (or probably through) the door. “I um… I just got distracted by the food.”
“So it was nothing to do with Lena openly admitting she’s bisexual?”
Kara blanched. “I- wha- pff no.”
Alex rolled her eyes and opened the door to let Kara through before she broke anything else.
They all moved back over to the living room area as casually as possible, Winn setting out the food.
Alex leaned down to speak quietly to Kara before she sat down herself. “You know you can talk to me right?”
Kara nodded shyly and she let it go.
———
The last operation The Cleanup Squad did, it was Nia that called.
Alex sat up in bed, having only just managed to fall asleep, and picked up her phone. “Hello?”
“Alex? Kara’s about to break Lena’s coffee table.”
Alex sighed and waved away Kelly’s questioning look. “Okay. I’ll call J’onn.”
Ten minutes later, Alex was hanging onto J’onn like a backpack as he hovered just under Lena’s balcony with a replacement table.
There was a crash from inside.
“What was that?” Lena’s voice came from somewhere further inside her apartment and J’onn floated up to peer through the windows.
“Nothing! Just… a video on my phone.”
Alex’s phone buzzed with what was presumably the panicked text she just watched Kara send.
Kara went further into the apartment, rambling to Lena about how they should get into their pjs before they watch the next movie.
J’onn alighted on the balcony and they quietly made their way inside. J’onn cleared the broken table into a bag and flew off to dispose of it while Alex set down the new one.
Just as she was putting into place, Lena wandered into the room. Their eyes met briefly before Lena turned towards her kitchen, filled a glass of water, and left again, as though she hadn’t seen anything.
J’onn was back in the next moment and they disappeared back out into the night.
———
Lena opened the door with a smile and stepped aside to let Alex in. “Alex. What can I do for you?” She shut the door and led her over to the kitchen. “Tea? Coffee?”
“Coffee please.”
Alex sat down at Lena’s kitchen island, thinking about how to phrase what she was going to say while Lena made them both a coffee.
Lena set a mug down in front of her and sat down across the island, waiting patiently for Alex to start talking.
“Do you know?”
Lena smiled, raising an eyebrow. “I know lots of things.”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Fine. Do you know about what we’ve been doing?”
“You’re going to have to be a little more specific, Danvers.”
She narrowed her eyes. “I know you saw me last night, Luthor. Why didn’t you say anything?”
Lena smiled and shook her head. “Alex, I have the most high tech security system in the world and an IQ that is most definitely higher than a five year old, and even a five year old would be able to notice you lot trying to rebuild furniture around them. Did you really think I didn’t notice? You replaced a $1000 chair with Ikea furniture.”
Alex went to defend herself but just deflated. “Yeah. Sorry.” She swirled her spoon through the coffee foam. “So why didn’t you say anything?”
Lena shrugged. “She’ll tell me when she’s ready.”
Alex watched her for a moment and smiled. Yeah. She was pretty sure she’d be her sister-in-law one day.
———
“Alex?”
She pushed past Kara into her apartment. “I think you should tell Lena.”
Kara blushed and stuttered as she closed the door. “Wha- I- There’s nothing to tell!”
Alex frowned at the odd reaction before she realised what Kara thought she meant and rolled her eyes. “No not that. Well… that too. But that’s not what I meant. I think you should tell her about Supergirl.”
Kara gaped at her. “Really?”
“Yeah. She proved beyond a doubt that she’s trustworthy and I can see how much you two mean to each other.”
Kara bit her lip, looking down and wringing her hands together. “But what if… what if she hates me for it?”
Her eyes were so big and sad and scared when she looked back up that Alex immediately wrapped her in a hug. “That’s not going to happen, okay? And the rest of us are here for you whatever happens. You know that, right?”
Kara nodded against her shoulder. “Okay.”
———
Kara stood outside Lena’s office, trying to drag her courage back from where it had run to hide, and wiping her sweaty palms on her slacks.
The door opened and Lena hesitantly poked her head out. “You doing okay out here?”
Kara gave a strangled laugh and nodded unconvincingly.
Lena stepped out of her office to join Kara in the corridor. “Okay, well, do you want to tell me why you’ve been standing out here for the past ten minutes?”
She gulped, breathing getting a little faster.
“Hey, hey it’s okay.”
Lena took her hand, stroking her thumb across her knuckles gently. It calmed her down a little and she sighed, leaning back against the wall and sliding down it, hand slipping out of Lena’s.
Lena came and sat on the floor beside her, offering her hand again.
Kara gladly tangled their fingers together, smiling sheepishly. “Sorry, my hand’s a little sweaty.”
Lena laughed and bumped their shoulders together. “That’s okay.”
Kara sighed and brought her other hand up to her glasses. “Lena, I-” She closed her eyes and removed her glasses with a shaky hand.
She felt gentle fingers take them from her grasp and opened her eyes to watch Lena carefully fold them up and place them on the floor beside them. She looked at Kara with a soft smile. She reached up and traced the same fingertips across Kara’s cheek, making her eyes flutter closed.
“I know.”
Kara’s eyes snapped open. “You did?”
She nodded.
“Oh. Well now I feel like I’ve made you sit out here on the floor with me for nothing.”
Lena laughed, her eyes and nose crinkling adorably, and Kara couldn’t stop herself from smiling even as her heart beat faster.
“Well since you already knew I was Supergirl, I feel like I should tell you a different secret. Like how I think I’m in love with you.”
Lena’s breath hitched, eyes flitting between Kara’s as they subconsciously leaned slowly closer. “You think?”
Her tongue darted out to wet her lips and Lena’s eyes followed. “I know.”
“Good. Because I am definitely in love with you.”
Any other thoughts melted away when their lips met. Kara’s hand automatically slid to Lena’s waist as Lena pressed closer, soft and warm and perfect.
There was a crunch and Kara fell backwards a little, accidentally pulling Lena so she was almost in her lap, as she made a hole in the wall with her back. They broke apart giggling, resting their foreheads together.
“Sorry.”
Lena kissed her again but they were both smiling too much for it to last long. “At least you don’t have to call Alex everytime you break something around me now.”

as a prompt: these stupid hats w lena, kara, and alex respectively
disclaimer: i wrote this at 12:30 am running on the sugar high of an ice cold ovaltine drink topped with salted caramel ice cream that tastes more like salt than caramel and all of this was written without proofreading and prior research, so...read at your own risk.
Alex wanted to burn the picture. She wanted it out of her sight. She wanted to see it up in flames until it has disintegrated into a million pieces. But...Kelly said she can’t. So, there on the mantel above the fireplace of their home stands a framed picture—a stupid picture, in Alex’s perspective—with Kara grinning in the middle, Lena on her left wearing a shy smile, and Alex wearing the biggest scowl on her face, arms crossed as Kara slung both arms around her and Lena. The three of them wearing the most stupid caps in the history of stupid caps.
See, there’s a story behind said stupid caps with the stupid captions on them. It was Nia who gave them the stupid caps. Two weeks after Alex told them the story...
A story Alex wishes no older sister ever has the tragedy of experiencing.
It started with a phone call in the middle of the night, as every good tragedy story starts with.
Kelly shakes her awake, "Babe, your phone s'ringing," she slurs sleepily. The shrill ringing finally breaking through Alex's sleepy stupor.
Who the fuck calls at 2 am? It was an unknown number which made Alex's heart rate speed. Oh God, what if something’s happened to their mother?
"Hello?"
"Hello, is this Alexandra Danvers?"
It was too formal for a call in the middle of the night. Oh God, it's a hospital isn't it? Oh fuck, fuck, fuck—
"Uh, yes, yes this is Danvers, speaking."
She tries to keep the panic in control.
"Ms. Danvers, this is Officer Brooke of NCPD, your sister, Kara Danvers, is now currently detained in our precinct for—"
Alex mind decided to dissociate the moment she heard the words; public indecency, bail and misdemeanor.
“Thank you for informing me, officer. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
Because, WHAT THE FUCK?
You know that moment when something just shitty happens, and your body just goes into robot mode? Alex searching her bag and wrangling for her keys is what wakes Kelly up.
"Alex? What are you doing? Where are you going?"
How do you tell your girlfriend that your sister and her girlfriend couldn't keep it in their pants, and now, she has to bail them out for acting like two horny teenagers?
Good God, this is a PR disaster, if one—just one paparazzi—caught wind that Lena Luthor is sitting in a cell right now, with about five other drunks and one kid whose pushing drugs, the media would have a field day.
“Uhm, I have to go get Kara from a precinct. It’s a long story, babe. Go sleep. I’ll tell you in the morning.”
“Oh my god, precinct? What happened? Is she okay?”
Kelly bless her heart, was concerned about her sister’s wellbeing. Meanwhile, all Alex wants to do was punch the shit out of her. Never mind the fact that it would probably harm Alex more than Kara, but she’s fucking pissed. This is so stupid, of all the fucking bad decisions that would land Kara Danvers in jail, it’s public sex.
She doesn’t need this shit.
“She’s okay, don’t worry,” Alex utters, thinking, Well, she isn’t gonna be okay once I’m done with her.
“Go back to sleep, promise it’s nothing big. I gotta go now.”
***
“Alex!" Kara exclaims, behind bars. That's a sentence she'll never thought she'd associate with Kara. "Thank Rao, you’re here, we--”
“WHAT THE FUCK WERE THE BOTH OF YOU—" Alex pauses mid-yell, when she sees Lena stumble behind Kara, "Are you drunk?!!”
“Oh my God, I swear to God, I’m going to die early because of your bullshit.”
Alex played the “I have the number of the Chief of Police and I can get your badge suspended since I am also the Director of a covert government agency, if you do not give me my sister and her girlfriend, right this instant” card. And now, she’s faced with a blushing Kara and an apparently still very drunk, very disheveled looking Lena Luthor.
“We’re sorry!!”
“Oh, oh you better fucking be sorry, you’re telling J’onn I need my brain bleached tomorrow morning. Public indecency for fuck’s sake. You’re a billionaire couldn’t you have just called your driver?!”
“Oh, uhm well, uh we kind of uh I kind of--”
Oh my God, Lena Luthor is into exhibitionism.
“Fuck. Okay, fine, whatever you’re forgiven I don’t give a shit anymore, just please shut up and please, please do not talk to me for the next 48 hours. Both of you. Understood?”
***
Apparently, Lena dragged Kara to Al’s claiming that, Kara what you need is a good drink. When’s the last time you experienced even a mild buzz?
And so, to the bar they went. Lena sending her driver home for the night, knowing that the both of them would be staying out late, and she can definitely just call an Uber or something, or maybe Kara wouldn’t really get drunk and they can just fly home.
But none of those happened. Instead, what happened is Kara getting wasted like never before, and Lena going down right along with her. And as usual as things go with these two, an innocent kiss outside the bar quickly escalated into something...more.
And now, here they were blushing and unable to look Alex in the eye in the back of Kelly’s car. Alex couldn’t exactly pick two drunk women with her bike could she?
She really didn’t know a person can be capable of feeling this much rage and exasperation but apparently, it is so very possible.
The moment they arrive at Lena’s place, she doesn’t even tell them goodbye or acknowledge their sorry’s and thank you’s, she just stares ahead, knuckles white around the steering wheel as she hears the car door close.
***
“It’s a very funny picture, Alex,” Kelly whispers in her ear, hugging her from behind as Alex glares at the newly-framed photo.
“That wasn’t a fun night, and this isn’t a funny photo. It’s a traumatic reminder, Kelly.”
“Stop being dramatic. It’s a cute photo. Nia really captured the essence, you know?”
Kelly lets out a laugh at Alex’s knitted eyebrows, once she spins around in her arms to face her.
“They better call Nia the next time they get arrested.”
“You think there’s gonna be a next time?”
“Kelly, it’s Kara and Lena. There’s gonna be a next time.”

How you met Maya’s parents.
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader, Kelly Olsen x Niece!Reader
Word count: 2545.
It was a normal Thursday. Until it wasn’t anymore.
Jamie and Maya were in front of the school waiting for their parents to come pick them up. You fell a little behind, because the school counselor wanted to make sure you sent your application for the robotics thing she had you applied for.
“I just want to make sure you won’t miss the date. It's very important and prestigious…” Blah-blah-blah. You know all of this. She’s been telling you about this program for two years now. You look at Maya and Jamie talking, wishing the counselor would just shut up and let you go already, so you could join their conversation that sounds way more fun.
“Oh, my parents are here.” You hear Maya’s voice. “I’ll see you tomorrow!”
It’s all a blur after that. There is so much going on it’s hard for you to know what to do next. First, the school counselor is asking something about your project. Second, you hear a car accelerating on the street close to the school. Third, police sirens chasing said car. Fourth, Maya is crossing the street.
“MOM’S HERE, GOTTA RUN!” You yell, leaving a dumbfounded counselor behind. You change using your super speed.
You quickly pick up Maya, putting her on the other side of the sidewalk, and you run to the middle of the street to stop the car with your body. There’s a loud crashing sound, but you’re obviously not hurt. The police car stops behind it, and two cops leave it raising their guns at the two criminals still inside the car. They’re handcuffed and taken away in a little time, and just then you notice the crowd, the phones and the applause around you. You smile a little embarrassed from the attention.
You look to the sidewalk, and run to Maya, who’s being held by her dad while her mom asks her several questions on whether she is hurt, scared, and ok.
“Are you ok?” You add to the amount of questions.
“You saved me.” She says, eyes blown, pupils completely dark. “Thank you.”
“Thank you, Superkid.” Her mother says offering her hand, as in for you to shake it. You try not to use much strength, although it is kind of hard given the situation you were just in and you’re still very worked up after it.
“You saved our daughter!” Her dad chimes in, also thankful. “There’s nothing we can say to thank you for that.”
“No need.” You smile, shyly. “Just doing my job.”
“Superkid!” You hear Jamie’s voice coming closer. “That was incredible. You saved her!”
“Thank you, Ja-” You bite your tongue. “Random girl.” Nope, too forced.
“Oh, is this your girlfriend, Maya?” Her mother asks and you blush furiously at the thought of them knowing about you. It takes you a while to realize they are NOT talking about you, but about Jamie.
“Oh, Ah. That’s, um-” Maya tries to use her words, but she’s too confused to do so. You decide to interrupt.
“Well, glad to see you’re ok.” You say looking back at the street where the cars are having a hard time moving because there’s a broken car in the middle of it. “I should take this car out of here.”
You pick up the car, and right before flying away with it, you hear:
“Oh my God, she’s so strong.” Coming from Maya’s mouth.
“That kid is amazing.” Her dad agrees, and you smile to yourself again, while taking the car out of the way.
A few seconds later, though, you’re back in the school, in your old clothes and glasses. Running towards Maya like you were there the entire time.
“Babe, are you ok?” You rush in, holding her hands and looking at them for any bruises. “I saw what happened from the other side.”
“Superkid saved her.” Jamie says, with a grin, like she’s just giving you brand new information, and you hold a laughter back.
“Actually, this is my girlfriend.” Maya says to her parents and they both shake their heads agreeing.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you.” Her dad raises his hand and you, and you shake it, politely.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Rose.” You say, still blushed from when he called you amazing a minute ago. You turn back to her mother. “Mrs. Rose.”
She doesn’t talk for a while. She just stares at you and you can see the wheels on her brain turning. Oh no. Not the…
“You’re a Luthor.” She says, matter-of-factly. Then turns to her husband. “She is Lena Luthor’s daughter. I’ve met them a while back.”
“What?” Maya’s dad lets go of her, turning rigid at the mention of your last name. “You can’t possibly be dating an evil Luthor.”
“She’s not evil!” You hear and you think it came from Maya’s mouth, only to realize a second later it was Jamie who said it, while reaching out, holding your shoulder to support you. “And her mother isn’t evil either. Just because Lex Luthor is the worst, doesn’t mean everyone in the Luthor’s family is too.”
You want to answer. You want to tell them to go fuck themselves because they just said you were amazing, and thanked you for saving their daughter’s life. And now they’re just staring at you like you’ve committed a crime, when you have done the exact opposite. But your words are stuck in your throat and your eyes are filled with tears before you can even form a sentence.
“You understand too little of the world, little girl.” It’s what her father answers. “You have no way to know that her mother is not evil, but I have. I’ve seen how L Corp treats people that dare to go against them.”
“Wait, you know my mom?” Your words finally come out, in complete shock and disbelief. Maya never mentioned any of that. She said her parents hated your family because Lex tried to mind control them, along with everyone else on Earth. And honestly, you know that feeling of being mind controlled by him, so you can’t blame them.
“We’ve met before.” He twists his nose while saying that. “A little too icy for my taste.”
“Dad, please. Let’s just go.” Maya asks, trying to push him out of the way.
You feel Jamie’s grip tightening around your shoulder, like telling you it’s time for you both to leave. You agree with your head, unclenching your jaw, still shooting daggers with your eyes. But, still, you breathe deep.
“Icy doesn’t mean evil. I hope you can understand that.” You say, and smile at Maya. “I’m just glad you’re ok.”
“Come on. My mami is here.” Jamie pulls you by the hand, and you let yourself follow her trying to ignore their looks to your back. Jamie wraps her arms around you and whispers in your ear. “No super hearing. It won’t do you any good.”
“Nothing about this has done me any good.” You manage to say, and Jamie shoves you inside Kelly’s momvan. And you’re so lost and sad, you don’t even understand why you’re going with her when you can just fly away. Weirdly, flying doesn’t feel like an option to you right now.
“Is everything ok? I heard that there was a car chase around here.” Kelly asks when Jamie walks in, and sits on the passenger seat next to her.
“Superkid saved everyone.” Jamie says with a smile, and you can see a smile coming up on Kelly’s face, while she starts driving away.
“Good for you!” Kelly says taking one hand out of the wheel, and patting your leg gently. “You must be so proud of yourself.”
“Yeah, it’s-Mhm-it’s…” You start, but soon you’re crying desperately, being very loud about it. “It sucks!”
“Hey, hey. No!” Jamie looks behind and reaches out to you. But she doesn’t know what to do or say, and Kelly doesn’t really understand what’s going on. They stare at each other for one second, until Kelly turns to the front again, breathing deep.
“Where would you like to go, honey?” You know she is talking to you, even though she’s using Jamie’s pet name. “Do you want to go home? To our place? Maybe you want to tell me more about what happened?”
“I’m sorry, auntie.” You dry your face, holding your tears back. “You can just stop the car here, and I’ll fly to L Corp. I have to work on a project.”
“I’ll drive you there.” She says and you agree with your head, because you really don’t want to fly right now. “Do you want to tell me what happened?”
“I’ll let Jamie fill you in after.” You shrug. “Right now, I just want to think about something else.”
They change the subject, but you don’t really pay attention to any of it. It feels so weird being loved when you’re wearing the ‘House of El’ crest on your chest, and just a minute later being hated on, when you’re wearing your glasses and there’s no alter ego helping you out of Luthor's name. One minute you’re Saving Face, the next one Earth Disgrace.
“Hey, little-Danvers.” Jamie says after Kelly parallel parks in front of L Corp. You look at her. “They’re dumbasses. They are the icy ones, ok?”
“Yeah. Thanks for your help back there.” You get out of the car and make your way inside the building. You know you have to work on your project, but you can’t even think right now, let alone come up with something new and innovatory. “Hey Aly, can you call my mom’s assistant and ask her if she’s busy right now?”
“Sure thing, Miss Luthor-Danvers!” Aly studies your face for a few seconds. “Everything alright, miss?”
“Um, yeah. It’s fine.” You agree and she does what you asked, even though she doesn’t look convinced at all.
“You can go up. She is not busy.” Aly says with a smile, and you match hers. You don’t even know what you’re going to say to Lena, but you feel you need her. You make your way to the last floor, and go inside her office. Lena stands up when she sees you, a smile on her face.
“There’s my little hero!” She says pointing at the images on the TV of you standing in front of the car. Hair blowing in the wind, hands on the waist, looking proud of yourself. Then she looks at you, looking sad and small in front of her. You get now why people think you’re two different people. These two images do not match. “My baby! What’s wrong?”
“I just want a hug.” You think about it for a second when you see her coming closer with arms open. “But I’d like some donuts more.”
Lena chuckles and asks her assistant to go out and buy you a box. She finally comes closer a while later, opens arms, and snugs you in. The tears come uninvited, and she just lets you cry for a while.
“Baby, what happened?” She presses when you don’t talk, only cry, for a few good minutes.
“I saved Maya.” You look at her, big watery eyes. “Her parents were so thankful, and it felt so good.”
Lena agrees with her head, because she understands how good it feels to save someone you love. It’s not the same as saving a person you’ve never met. Sure, both feel good. But saving someone you love is the most powerful and strong feeling you’ve ever felt.
“Then I was out of my supersuit and in my glasses and they just-” You choke on your words, and it’s like she knows what’s coming next. “They hated me!”
“Oh baby.” Lena brings you in for another hug. Tighter than the first one. She kisses your head a couple of times. “I’m sorry they can’t see what an amazing person you are. Suit or no suit. But that doesn’t make what you did today less important. It was incredible.” She holds your chin up, to look at her. “You’re incredible.”
“He said you are icy.” You say, and Lena’s response is a soft chuckle.
“Yes, well, men think that about powerful women.” She winks at you, unbothered. “I take it as a compliment.”
“Well, I don’t.” You pout and Lena cleans your face from your tears, same smile still on her lips.
“My love, they can only hurt us if we let them.” She says, raising her gaze at the door, calling her assistant in with the donuts for you. The box is placed on the table in front of you. Lena waits until she leaves, and turns back to you. “Come on, let’s eat donuts, and talk about how Superkid’s name is on everyone’s mouth today.”
“Is that a good thing?” You ask and she blinks at you like you’re asking a stupid question. You look back at the TV and see your video stopping the runaway car over and over again. Yeah. It’s a good thing.
Your phone rings at text, and you pick it up from your back pocket, while Lena goes for the donuts.
Maya: Sorry about my parents. They’re jerks.
You: Are you alright? It was quite the scare.
Maya: I’m 100% fine! Superkid saved me! Do you see now why she is my favorite hero?
You: Yes, I see now. I’m glad you’re ok. I’ll send a thank you card for your crush.
Maya: You’re my crush! Also, did I mention how sorry I am and how jerks my parents were?
You: You have.
Lena pulls your head towards her and kisses your forehead with a smile.
“You know, it’s not her fault her parents are jerks.” She says and you roll your eyes.
“Stop reading my texts.” You complain pretending to be upset, but you smile a little when she’s not looking.
You: Hey, we are not our parents, right?
Maya: No, we are not. You are the most comprehensive human being on the planet. That’s one of the things that make me love you.
You squeak in excitement when you read that, and stand up feeling so happy your feet don’t even touch the ground. You can’t stop reading the text over and over again.
“Hey! I brought donuts so we can celebrate you saving the people from your school!” Kara flies in, pink box in hands and Lena gives her an eyebrow raise.
“Beat you to it.” She adds with a smile, pointing at the pink box sitting on the table and Kara shrugs.
“The more the merrier!” Kara comes closer to you, pushing your shoulder down, making your feet touch the floor. “What’s with her?”
“Pretty sure her girlfriend just said she loves her.” Lena says with a smile, and Kara beams to you, looking as excited as you are.
“Seriously, you have to stop reading my texts.” You pretend to be annoyed, but you look back on your phone and a smile instantly comes.
You: You do, huh?
Maya: I do.
You: I love you too.
You love your girlfriend. You love being Superkid. You love donuts. And you love your moms very much. Turns out, your life’s insane, but it’s also pretty good.
Notes:
@sophixsa prompted this awesome idea, and I’m sorry it was a little sad at first, but happy ending, at least.

Core Day (Kara Danvers x Reader)
Tumblr media
Smut
You didn’t make a habit of getting yourself caught in bad situations. Especially not ones that Kara would have to get you out of, whether she was being Kara Danvers or Supergirl. This seemed to be an exception because not only did Kara have to come to your rescue, but so a plethora of other people, including your mother. Kara had promised Cat that she’d take care of you, and Kara had been doing a good job, but there was only so long you could really be kept out of trouble.
“Before you say anything, I’m sorry,” you said as Kara helped you into your car. Kara got in after you and just held your hand. She didn’t seem overly upset with you, but you could tell that she was definitely still concerned about your safety. You’d gotten in a fight with a reporter who kept hounding you on your alleged romance with Supergirl and a mysterious government agent.
“It’s fine, sometimes it’s hard not to let things get to you.” Kara offered you a sympathetic smile, which you returned. The two of you rode back to your apartment, just a few levels below a penthouse that Lex Luthor owned. If not for you living there, he could have easily bought out the whole building. “Do you think this is another ploy to get you to leave National City from the Luthors?”
“I cleared up my misunderstanding with the women, but Lex was no so willing to hear me out. It is fine though,” you assured her. Kara wasn’t so convinced, but when you pulled her in for a soft and delicate kiss, she was distracted. “You know, I skipped my workout this morning. I could use some core training if you’re up for it.”
“Once Alex clears you for physical activity. She’s already in your apartment, I’ll be there in a few,” Kara promised you. You got a quick kiss from her before you walked up to your doorman. You greeted each other politely and then you ditched your security at the elevator. There were more security guards waiting in the hallway of your floor. Most of them were for you, the two who waited at the elevator for you and walked you to your apartment door, and the two who waited outside of the door. There were some other guards on your floor, but they were there for one of your rich neighbors.
“Hey doc,” you said happily as you swaggered over to the dining room table. Alex’s stuff was already set up there and she was waiting for you. “How’s your morning going?”
“Good, Kelly and I were getting coffee when Kara called me. That was a pretty good hit from what I here, not something someone would expect from Cat Grant’s little girl,” Alex said and you shrugged. “Have you been keeping with the medication?”
“Yes Alex, I know what could happen if I didn’t,” you sighed as Alex checked you out. Kara flew in through an open window and then shut it, watching as Alex finished up the check up.
“She’s good, right?” Kara asked and Alex nodded. You hopped off of the table and tugged Kara back towards your bedroom as Alex cleaned up her stuff. Kara wrapped her arms around you and pushed open the door to your room. You leaned in and kissed her as she floated the two of you over to your bed. She let the two of you hover above the mattress before gently setting your bodies down.
“I love it when you do that,” you told her with a dopey smile. Kara returned the smile as she tugged the bottom of your shirt up a bit. Her fingers ran over your exposed skin until your shirt was completely off of your body. You watched Kara sit back and take off her suit, and then she pulled you on top of her body. “Did you bring it?”
“Of course I did,” Kara said as she zoomed across the room. When she came back, she was standing in front of your bed, the strap-on hanging freely between her legs. You motioned for her to come closer and Kara grabbed behind your knees to tug you towards the edge of the bed. She slowly teased you with the tip of the dildo, rubbing it against your entrance and clit before she pushed inside of you.
You sat forward and held onto her tightly. Once your legs were wrapped around her, she began to float into the air. That always got your heart racing a bit. Kara seemed to have taken your joke about this being the makeup for your missed gym day seriously because you realized that you were doing most of the work. You didn’t mind it though, especially because you could see how hot Kara thought it was that you were practically fucking yourself on her in her eyes.
Just before you found yourself cumming, Kara pulled you off of the strap-on and up so that her head was between your legs. She held you up as she ate you out to completion before letting you fall back onto the bed. You watched Kara get dressed back in her Supergirl suit before she zipped out of your apartment for about 15 minutes before she returned, this time in more leisurely attire.
“There was an emergency,” Kara told you. You nodded in understanding and sat up, now dressed in a pair of underwear and one of Kara’s National City University sweatshirts. Kara tossed a bag of fast food on your bed and then laid down next to you. “I got us lunch.”
“Have I ever told you that I absolutely fucking love you?” you asked and Kara nodded. “Well, I absolutely fucking love you.”
“I love you too,” Kara told you. You ignored the little blush at your use of swear words and decided to focus more on cuddling her and eating the food she brought you.

short(?) fic idea: kara and lena through the other peoples perspective (ie noonans barista, lena’s driver, takeout cashier or any random ppl)
I read this and my first reaction was, I don’t know how to write a drabble. And then Jack’s voice interrupted me so, this may not be what you’re looking for anon, but here’s what just happened in my head lol...
“I’m just saying,” Jack finishes as they’re finally next in line at Noonan’s, “there’s something going on with them.”
“You’ve got some awfully firm ideas of what for someone with absolutely no evidence,” Sam says smiling and looking down at the pastries in the case.
“I’ve got eyes!” Jack looks affronted
“You know, I think he might be right.”
Sam turns to Kelly in surprise. “Look I know when I first got to National City, I thought they might be dating, too,” Sam says. “But they weren’t!”
“Plus,” Alex breaks in, “Kara would tell me. She’s terrible at keeping secrets.”
They shuffle forward as the line moves. Sam waves them all up to the counter, before greeting the barista. “Hey Tom, I’ll have my usual and whatever this crew is ordering.” She turns back to the group. “It’s on me today, even if Jack couldn’t be more wrong.”
“Oh, how can you not think they’re dating…” Jack starts but he’s interrupted by the barista.
“Jack, are you talking about Kara and Lena?” Jack nods at him. “They’re definitely dating.”
Jack claps his hands together and practically crows with glee. Alex looks like she might pass out. Kelly just smiles. Sam looks gobsmacked.
Alex recovers first. “Tom! What do you mean they’re dating?”
“Oh come on,” says Tom, punching in their drinks, “you see them more than I do, but it’s pretty clear whenever they’re in here. All the soft touches and the blushing and the cheek kissing? That’s dating activity. And Lena never lets Kara pay.”
“Cheek kissing…?” Alex is looking a little green now.
Tom finishes ringing them up and Kelly guides Alex over to wait for their drinks while Jack grabs a table as Sam pays.
“You doing ok there, babe?” Kelly asks. “You look like you’re thinking a little too hard.”
“She’d tell me. I mean, right?” Alex looks at her girlfriend. “If she and Lena were, you know?”
Kelly laughs affectionately. “Maybe they’re still figuring out how to tell you, maybe it’s early, maybe they don’t even know themselves yet.” She looks a little more serious now. “But you’ve seen them together lately. Don’t you think it’s something a little more?”
They pick up the drinks from the counter when they’re ready and walk over to where Jack and Sam have commandeered four large chairs around a low table.
“Gross,” Alex says, squinting down at the writing on the side of second cup she’s holding. “Who ordered the venti pumpkin spice with extra whip?”
“Me!” Jack grins and makes grabby hands. “Sammy and I were continuing our earlier conversation,” he adds while Alex and Kelly take their seats. “She agrees with the premise that Lena and Kara would like to be dating each other, but doesn’t believe me that it’s already happening.”
Sam puts a hand up. “There’s too much pining for that to be the case.”
“They’ll get there when they’re ready,” Kelly says. “If they’re not there already.”
Alex, who’s been silent since handing Jack the drink suddenly looks up. “There’s only one solution,” she says.
Jack leans forward. “I’m all ears love.”
“Tom said it looked to him like they’re dating, right?” The rest of them nod. “If they’re dating in secret, then they’re not going to act that way around us. But around people who they don’t think are watching...?” She looks around the circle.
“They’d be more comfortable,” Sam says thoughtfully.
“I feel like I know where this is going,” Kelly interrupts, “and I need to go on record saying we should just let them be.”
“We need to talk to the people in their lives who aren’t us,” Alex finishes, ignoring Kelly’s advice.
“I’ll make a list,” says Jack. “We can divide and conquer.”
—————-
“Oh, Lena is in here all the time, she’s always sending that sweet girlfriend of hers the most beautiful bouquets,” says the florist, Ruth, when Sam drops by.
“Where does she have them sent?” Sam asks.
“Mostly to CatCo,” Ruth answers, wrapping brown paper around a mix of delphinium, lisianthus, free spirit roses, and starry asters. “Sometimes she’ll come in and pick up the flowers herself, though.”
——————
“Inconclusive,” Alex says, shaking her head when Sam reports back to the group. “Lena has sent Kara flowers at work since she moved from Metropolis.”
“On to the next,” says Jack. “I’ll handle this one.”
——————-
“So, Harvey,” Jack begins, leaning against the wall next to the front desk. “I bet you see everything that goes on in this building, don’t you?”
Harvey grins as he waves a resident through. “Doormen know everything, Jack.”
Jack nods. “So, say, if one of your residents has someone over regularly, you’d see them come and go, right? Get a feel for the relationship?” He’s trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
“I’d like to think we can generally tell who guests are to our residents, sure,” Harvey says easily, winking at an older woman passing the desk. She blushes and waves. “Is there something specific you’re looking for, Jack? Or have I misjudged you and you’re just interested in what the job is like.”
Jack grins. “You see right through me, Harvey. I’ll just come out and ask it. Do you think Lena and Kara are dating?”
Harvey gives Jack a long, inscrutable look.
“I wouldn’t want to speculate on the particulars, Jack,” he finally says. “But I’ll tell you this: Ms. Luthor is never happier than when Ms. Danvers is with her.”
——————-
“Well, Harvey was less helpful than Ruth,” Jack complains that evening, pouring himself a drink at Sam's wet bar before joining her and Alex on the couch.
“I have another idea about who to ask next,” Alex says.
—————-
All in all, they talk to as many people as they can think of—from the  server at Kara's favorite pizza place (“They always fight about who gets to pay, young love is so sweet”), to Lena’s driver (“It’s not my place, but Sunday night is definitely date night”). Nia even volunteers to ask around CatCo once they bring her up to speed. Apparently, the newsroom is divided on the topic, though everyone agrees there’s something there.
—————-
It comes to a head two weeks later when Sam hosts game night.
Kara corners Alex in the kitchen when Kelly asks for more snacks. Kara comes up next to her as she pours more chips into a bowl, leans against the counter.
“Alex, why did Jimmy at Mr. Huang’s House of Wontons ask me when Lena’s and my anniversary is?”
Alex rubs the back of her neck. When she’d recruited Jimmy to help, she really thought he’d be more subtle. She decides being direct is the best way to handle this.
“Ok so don’t be mad but I might have asked him if he thought you guys were dating in secret.”
Kara looks like heat vision is something Alex should be concerned about right now.
“I know you like her, Kara, you’re about as subtle as a freight train.” Alex clips the top of the chip bag closed, and glances over at Kara.
Kara frowns at that, looking a little vulnerable instead of angry now. “So what if I do?”
“I think everyone in National City knows that Lena likes you,” Alex continues. Kara goes pink and splutters unintelligibly. Alex puts up a hand to stop her. “Jack thought you might be dating and I guess I got worried that you were but didn’t want to tell me because you thought I wouldn’t approve. So I asked around.”
“Well we’re not dating!” Kara says defensively, reaching up to adjust her glasses. “And it’s not cool to go around asking people about us, ok? She’s my best friend and we’re close and maybe I do like her but,” Kara swallows hard and it almost looks like she might cry and now alex knows for certain that they’re not dating but oh does Kara want to be, “we’re not dating. Can you drop it?”
“Kara,” Alex says gently, putting a hand on her sister’s shoulder. “I’m just trying to say it would be ok, if you were dating. We all just want you to be happy. I get that you’re not,” Alex says when Kara starts to interrupt her (and is Alex referring to Kara dating or Kara being happy? She isn’t sure herself), “but I’m trying to tell you it would be great if you were.”
“I just,” Kara looks down at the counter. “Alex I want to, so badly, but I can’t lose her again. We spent so long getting back to this place, you know? What if I ask her out and then I mess it up?”
A throat clears behind them, and Alex and Kara whip their heads around.
“Sam sent me in for drinks,” Lena says, but she’s looking so intently at Kara that Alex decides this might be a good time to leave the kitchen.
Alex just rounding the corner back to the living room when she hears Lena speak again, in a softer voice than Alex has ever heard.
“You wouldn’t mess it up, you know. You couldn’t.”

30 (Technically 34) Albums We Loved That Happened To Come Out in 2020
Tumblr media
So much has already been said and written about this cursed past year, but a few good things came out of it, including the music. Album-wise, like many before it and many to come, it was an embarrassment of riches. But even with so much time on our hands to devour new tunes, it was often old favorites, songs of comfort or familiarity that garnered the heaviest rotation. For many artists, too, it was a year ripe for revisiting or reissues of old material, looking at existing songs with fresh and new perspectives. Simply put, with so much to listen to, new and old, the prospect of ranking a finite number of albums felt not only daunting, but frankly a bit stupid. Maybe we were late to the game, but 2020 taught us that music should and can be appreciated in multiple contexts, not limited to but including when it first came out and when it was heard again and again, even if years later. The records below--listed in alphabetical order--happened to be released in some form in 2020, whether never-before-heard or heard before but in a different format. And the only thing I know is that we’ll be listening to them in 2021 and beyond.
Tumblr media
Autechre - SIGN & PLUS (Warp)
The legendary British electronic music duo surprise released SIGN a mere month and a half after its announcement and then PLUS 12 days later. The former was a beatific collection of soundscapes that belied the band’s usual harsh noise, while PLUS embraced that noise right back, drawing you in with the clattering chaotic burbles of opener “DekDre Scap B” and lurching forward. -Jordan Mainzer

Against All Logic - 2017-2019 (Other People)
The perennially chill ambient house artist Nicolas Jaar had a busy 2020, as usual, releasing two albums under his name, Cenizas and Telas. But it was 2017-2019, the follow-up to the debut album from his Against All Logic moniker, that came first and throughout the year helped to illustrate Jaar’s penchant for combining inspired samples with club beats and tape hiss. Take the way the lovelorn vocals of “Fantasy” or soulful coos of “If Loving You Is Wrong” war skittering, scratchy percussion and cool arpeggios, respectively: Jaar is coming into his own as a masterful producer almost a decade after he released his first full-length. Oh, and bonus points for including none other than Lydia Lunch on a banger so blunt it would make Death Grips blush. - JM
Tumblr media
Bartees Strange - Live Forever (Memory Music)
Like many, my introduction to Bartees Strange was through Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, his EP of The National covers. Creativity and shifting perspectives shine through each song’s reimaging, like flipping the coarse, almost manic “Mr. November” into something softer, more meditative. It felt like a mere peek into what was to come on Live Forever. Bartees Strange is a world-builder. Each track on his debut unfolds and welcomes you to a wildly engaging tableau, a fully constructed vision. “Jealousy” opens with soft vocals and birdsong. “In a Cab” is the slick soundtrack to racing through a cityscape in the rain, seeing the blurred lights of the high-rises above as you pass by. “Kelly Rowland” warps wistful pop song feelings. “Flagey God” takes you into a dark, pulsing club while only a few songs later, “Fallen For You” wraps you in echoed vocals and romantic, raw acoustic guitar.
It’s an accomplishment to craft an album of individual songs that stand strongly on their own but still feel cohesive. 2020 wasn’t all bad. It gave us Live Forever, a declaration of an artist’s arrival. - Lauren Lederman

Charli XCX - how i’m feeling now (Atlantic)
Back in the spring, many of us wondered who would put out something great in 2020’s quarantine. It was hard to imagine that the intensity of a global pandemic would really allow for artists to embrace creativity. That thought carries the same eye-roll inducing feeling of “We’ll get some great punk music out of a Trump presidency,” but of course, Charli XCX delivered. Through live workshops with fans and longstanding collaborators, she delivered songs to dance alone to in your bubble. Charli embraces the unknown of the moment but clutches onto what’s familiar. Under the glitch-pop veneer of the album, she digs into the anxieties of not just this moment of time but of the bigger questions we all confront: trajectories of relationships with friends, romantic partners, ourselves. Album standouts “forever” and “i finally understand” embrace that feeling of both looking for control and accepting the lack of it. Charli is a master at balancing this. - LL

Christine and the Queens - La Vita Nuova (Because Music)
Named after a Latin text by Dante Alighieri about missing a woman who has died, Chris’ La Vita Nuova is not about mourning a death but instead about loneliness and isolation, post-relationship or otherwise. It doesn’t bang quite like her previous two albums, but it hits harder than ever.

Dogleg - Melee (Triple Crown)
Released on March 13th, right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Melee was supposed to be supported by three cancelled tours–SXSW, an opening slot for Microwave, and an opening slot for Joyce Manor–and an appearance at this year’s cancelled Pitchfork Music Festival. Listening to the songs on the record, you can only imagine how they translate: the jerky momentum of “Bueno”, build-up of “Prom Hell”, gang vocals of “Fox”, clear-vocal anthem of “Wrist”, and odd groove of “Ender”.

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia & Dua Lipa/The Blessed Madonna: Club Future Nostalgia (Warner)
Where Dua Lipa’s much-anticipated second album Future Nostalgia succeeded was in its disco anthems and retro, club-ready beats, so who better to bring out the best of the record than The Blessed Madonna? The turntablist masterfully curates a mix of heavy hitters of the charts and the underground that not only offers an essential complement to Future Nostalgia but transcends it. Sending the tracks out to various producers and singers for features and then adding her own samples on top, she invites you to peel back the layers, enter a YouTube rabbit hole of sample searching as much as bopping along.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - May Our Chambers Be Full (Sacred Bones)
Roadburn Festival has long been on my bucket list, and since the pandemic showed me how much live music can be taken away in a flash, when it’s safe again to travel and go to a festival, I may just pull the trigger and go--especially considering it’s the springboard for such fruitful and inspired collaborations as the one between Louisville singer-songwriter Emma Ruth Rundle and Baton Rouge sludge dwellers Thou. Rundle embraces the heavier opportunities on the follow-up to her incredible 2018 record On Dark Horses with the ever-flexible Thou backing her up vocally and instrumentally. Slow-burning opener “Killing Floor” offers a familiar introduction to fans of both--sort of what a Rundle/Thou song would sound like--before grunge chugger “Monolith” introduces huge, catchy riffs and “Out of Existence” a True Widow-esque dirge, newfound inspirations for both artists bringing the best out of each other. - JM
Tumblr media
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters (Epic)
What makes Fetch the Bolt Cutters stand out among Apple’s catalog and music in general is the clarity with which Apple seethes at those who have wronged her, whether ex-boyfriends or patriarchal oppressors, and looks to her relationships with other women for peace of mind.

HAIM - Women in Music Pt. III (Columbia)
For HAIM, the title Women in Music Pt. III is suggestive that, more than their previous two records, their third centers around the experiences of being an all-female band in a historically white cis male-dominated scene, at least one that wouldn’t call catchy riffs written by a man “simple” or call attention to the faces a man makes while playing. What it doesn’t let on to is how deeply personal the record is, how, by unabashedly embracing genres and styles of music that they love, HAIM have made far and away their best album. Co-produced by the usual suspects, Danielle Haim, Ariel Rechtshaid, and ex-Vampire Weekender Rostam Batmanglij, it’s instrumentally and aesthetically dynamic and diverse, consistently earnest without devolving into cheese.

Irreversible Entanglements - Who Sent You? (International Anthem)
I’ve been captivated by Irreversible Entanglements ever since I first saw them at Pitchfork Music Festival 2018. The radical poetry of Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) is the perfect front for a ramshackle mix of Luke Stewart’s spidery bass, Tcheser Holmes’ weighty drums, and a horn section that concocts tones that range from hopeful to desperate. At their best, Who Sent You? is a shining example of celebratory Afrofuturism and metaphysics that makes the urgency of Ayewa’s more concrete and political words all the more necessary. “No Más”, composed by Panamanian-born trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, is a declaration against imperialist oppression, while the stunning title track flips the switch like a Kara Walker painting, as Ayewa’s the one interrogating the police officer terrorizing her community. “Who sent you?” she repeats, never spiraling, grabbing a hold of the power and never letting go. - JM

Jeff Parker - Suite for Max Brown (International Anthem/Nonesuch)
It’s Jeff Parker’s mom’s turn. After 2016′s The New Breed ended up being a tribute to the guitarist’s father, who passed away during the making of it, Parker decided to pay tribute to Maxine while she was still alive. Suite for Max Brown (Brown is his mother’s maiden name; Max is what people call her) is a genre-bending collection of tracks inspired by Parker’s DJing, juxtapositions of sequenced beats with improvisation that certainly sound like the brainchild of one individual. Indeed, Parker plays the majority of the instruments on it and engineered most of it at home or during his 2018 Headlands Center residency in Sausalito, CA; though all of the players and the vocalist (Jeff’s daughter Ruby Parker) on The New Breed show up, plus a couple trumpeters (piccolo player Rob Mazurek and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes) and cellist Katinka Kleijn, Suite for Max Brown is a distinctly Jeff Parker record.

Jeff Rosenstock - NO DREAM (Polyvinyl)
Jeff Rosenstock throws us right into the spinning, manic energy of NO DREAM, his latest release from a seemingly endless well of music that never lacks urgency. It’s a reminder that though it’s been a strange year, the issues Rosenstock tackles here aren’t new. There’s no interest in making you feel comfortable here. On the album’s title track, Rosenstock sings, lulling you into a false sense of security, “They were separating families carelessly / Under the guise of protecting you and me.” But reality sets in, and the hazy guitars spin out as he spits, “It’s not a dream!” and, “Fuck violence!”
My image of Jeff Rosenstock in the year 2020 is masked up with “Black Lives Matter” scrawled across the fabric of his mask in Sharpie, performing album highlight “Scram!” on Late Night with Seth Meyers as high energy as ever. It felt like watching someone send out a beacon, both a distress signal and a call to arms. - LL

Jessie Ware - What’s Your Pleasure? (PMR/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
I am not someone who goes to clubs. I don’t “go out dancing,” preferring to let loose in the privacy of my own home or a trusted friend’s house party. But Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? makes me think I could embrace a night out like that, once the world opens up again, of course. The album is filled with syncopated disco beats that feel fresh and classic all at once. The abundant horns and strings on “Step Into My Life” are decadent, like light bouncing off sequins in a dark room. Ware’s voice is slinky and velvety one moment, windswept like her album cover the next. It’s songs like “Save a Kiss” that embrace both, allowing her to show off her range. - LL
Tumblr media
Laura Marling - Song for Our Daughter (Partisan)
With sparse production, mostly from her but with additions from Ethan Johns and Dom Monks, Marling foregoes the comparative maximalism of the Blake Mills-produced Semper Femina, her last proper full-length, and 2018′s LUMP collaboration. The songs aren’t simple, but they’re succinct, and every element, from Marling’s finger-picked guitars, the occasional slide guitar, and that unmistakably calm voice, sometimes alone and sometimes layered, fits. It’s her most universal set of songs yet, centering around the times when we’re apart from one another but reflecting on when we were together and when we might be together again, with no guarantees.

Les Amazones d’Afrique - Amazones Power (Real World Records)
The groovy pan-African collective expands upon their debut Republique Amazone and then some with Amazones Power, a tour-de-force statement of female empowerment in the face of oppression against women throughout the African diaspora. Indeed, the album is more than just songs boldly decrying FGM, though those demands ring heavily. Instead, the group goes further, delving into gender power structures in marriage on “Queens” and selectively finding strength in tradition on “Dreams”. And this time, they include men to stand alongside with them. “Together we must stand / Together we must end this,” sings Guinean musician/dancer/artist Niariu on opener “Heavy” in solidarity with features Douranne (Boy) Fall and Magueye Diouk (Jon Grace) of Paris band Nyoko Bokbae. But perhaps it’s her kiss-off on “Smile” that hits hardest: “I shut up for no one.” - JM
Tumblr media
Lianne La Havas - Lianne La Havas (Nonesuch)
The British singer-songwriter’s much anticipated follow-up to 2015′s Blood was better than I could have ever imagined. A song cycle about life cycles--of nature, of lives, of a relationship--inspired by an actual breakup, Lianne La Havas is a contemporary neo soul masterpiece. Overview opener “Bittersweet” is an instant earworm, La Havas’ coo-turned-belt filling the space between classic and increasingly emotive slabs of piano and guitar. Funky, lovestruck strut “Read My Mind” is the soundtrack for the unbridled confidence of finding new love. Yes, the doubts begin to sow on the fingerpicked melancholy of “Green Papaya” and “Can’t Fight”, and where the album goes from a simple narrative perspective may be predictable: They break up, they don’t get back together, La Havas enjoys her independence. But the depth of the arrangements and assuredness of La Havas’ singing is a product of an artist starting to really show us what she can do. And how many people can pull off a Radiohead cover like that? - JM
Tumblr media
Lomelda - Hannah (Double Double Whammy)
What does it mean to title an album after yourself? Lomelda’s latest album is centered around discovering more about yourself while not always having the answers. Despite the lyrical content, the album is self-assured. Hannah Read’s voice feels as steady as ever as it navigates these twisting questions, like the way the world can shift after a kiss. She finds power in softness and reflection throughout the album, like when she explores the mantra-like words of “Wonder” or through a reminder to do no harm in “Hannah Sun”. In a year that allowed for perhaps more reflection than usual, Hannah makes space for the questions that arise out of figuring yourself out, of making sense of the messiness of it all, wrapped in warm guitar, balanced vocals, and steady drums. - LL
Tumblr media
Moses Sumney - Grae (Jagjaguwar)
“Am I vital / If my heart is idle? / Am I doomed?” Moses Sumney famously sang on his stunning 2017 debut Aromanticism, an album that saw him developing his acceptance of being alone. grae, his two-part 2nd full-length, and his first since officially moving from L.A. to the Appalachian Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, doubles down on themes of heartbreak, but instead of being sure in his seclusion, he embraces the unknown. The album teeters between interludes of platitudes about isolation and ruminations on failed human connection, and maximally arranged clutches of uncertainty. “When my mind’s clouded and filled with doubt / That’s when I feel the most alive,” Sumney coos over horns and piano on slinky soul song “Cut Me”; it’s an effective mantra for the album.

Norah Jones - Pick Me Up Off The Floor (Blue Note)
At the time we previewed Norah Jones’ 7th studio album, she had only released a few tracks from it. Turns out the rest was just as powerful. From the blues stomp of “Flame Twin” to the rolling piano stylings of “Hurts to Be Alone”, Pick Me Up Off The Floor is an album full of jazzy orchestrations and soul and gospel-indebted arrangements, Jones’ silky, yearning voice tying together the simple, yet lush and deep instrumentation. And that other Tweedy feature, that closes the album? It’s a heartbreaking portrait of loneliness, one of many on a record that still manages to celebrate being alive all the while. - JM
Tumblr media
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher (Dead Oceans)
Phoebe Bridgers is a master of details. Her lyrics shine when they get specific. They range from the mundane to morbid: A superfan’s ghost-like wandering under a drugstore’s fluorescent lights, a skinhead likely buried under a blooming garden, reckoning with the you in “Moon Song”’s lines, “You are sick, and you’re married / And you might be dying.” Bridgers has always been able to set a scene meticulously, and Punisher arrived with 11 songs that expanded that skill, both lyrically and musically, with her dark humor intact and a fuller sound that includes her boygenuis collaborators’ harmonies. - LL
Tumblr media
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love: The Demos & Dry - The Demos (Island)
Yes, revisiting Dry’s demos as a separate entity is still worthwhile. Harvey’s powerhouse vocal performance carries the acoustic strummed “Oh My Lover”, while the comparatively minimal arrangement of “Victory” highlights bluesy riffing, call-and-response harmonies, and layered guitar and vocals. The singles, the slinky and sharp “Dress” and propulsive anthem “Sheela-Na-Gig”, hold up to their ultimate studio versions, too. But it’s the To Bring You My Love material that provides novelty because it’s never been released and more so because it encompasses the greatest aesthetic contrast from the album. From the warbling hues and guitar lines of the title track to the tremolo haze of “Teclo” to the crisp snares of “Working With The Man”, the demos show a continuity and level of cohesiveness with the diversity of Dry and Rid of Me not shown on the studio version of Harvey’s more accessible commercial breakout. (Predictably, the album’s most well-known song, “Down by the Water”, is the closest to its eventual version.) “Long Snake Moan” is simultaneously more spacious and more noisy, its garage blues a total contrast to the lurking “I Think I’m A Mother” and swaying shanty “Send His Love To Me”. And “The Dancer” fully embraces its flamenco influences, hand claps and all.
Tumblr media
Porridge Radio - Every Bad (Secretly Canadian)
Is there a better opening line than “I’m bored to death, let’s argue”? That kind of duality is found across all of Every Bad as it grapples with the frustrations and anxiety of trying to figure it all out, whatever that might mean for you. “Maybe I was born confused, but I’m not,” vocalist Dana Margolin repeats throughout the opening track, roping in listeners with the dizzying feeling of trying to make sense of yourself. The band’s guitar and synth sound coupled with Margolin’s howl makes for a dance party filled with dread, rendering Margolin’s already strong, repetitive lyrics even more spiraling. And yet, by the time we get to “Lilacs”, a glimmer of something else shines through as the music gets more manic and Margolin’s voice begins to soar: “I don’t want to get bitter / I want us to get better / I want us to be kinder / To ourselves and to each other.” - LL
Tumblr media
Sault - Untitled (Rise) & Untitled (Black Is) (Forever Living Originals)
Yes, Black Is still pulls plenty of devastating punches. “Eternal Life”, a segue from the gospel boost of “US”, juxtaposes a deliberate drum beat with zooming synths, both ascending like a chorus of angels, as they sing, “I see sadness in your eye / ‘Cause I know you don’t wanna die,” presenting the oppression of Black life at the hands of white supremacy in inarguable terms. Ultimately, though, it’s the anthemic nature of the songs, resistant of platitudes, that shines through. “Nobody cared / This generation cares,” says Laurette Josiah on “This Generation”. Whether she’s talking about young people in general or the latest generation of young Black leaders, the sentiment is reflected on songs like “Black”, wherein over dynamic, sinewy instrumentation, the singers alternate between encouragement, support, and love of the self and others.

Shamir - Shamir (self-released)
Shamir’s voice is a bright beacon in a sea of conventional singers. Shamir captures the effervescence of pop music and weaves it together with elements of country, alt rock, and diary confessional lyrics all supported by the emotion and range of his vocals. There’s something for everyone across the album’s 11 shimmering tracks. Lead single and opener “On My Own” feels like a declaration of self and self-sufficiency, an anthem of a breakup song. The almost pop-punk bounce of “Pretty When I’m Sad”, paired perfectly with lines like the angst-ridden, “Let’s fuck around inside each other’s heads,” feels impossible to not bop along to. The twang of “Other Side” would put a country crooner to shame. That’s the power of Shamir. His voice has the ability to smoothly convey joy, resilience, and humor. He uses elements of several genres, not just the dance-pop of his debut, to build a unique album that gives listeners so much to sift through and, of course, dance to. - LL
Tumblr media
Songhoy Blues - Optimisme (Fat Possum)
If Songhoy Blues’ second album Resistance lacked “the grit of its predecessor,” it’s clear from the hard rock stomp of the opening track of Malian band’s third album Optimisme that they rediscovered their mojo. More importantly, they couple this maximal brashness with tributes to those who make their world a better place: fighters for freedom, women, the young. It’s perhaps the first Songhoy Blues record to truly combine the celebratory nature of their desert blues with a balanced mixture of idealism and vigor. - JM
Tumblr media
Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone (Pure Noise)
How can you find hope in hopelessness, or optimism when every news story points to cruelty? Is it naïve to keep searching for light in the dark? I don’t think so, and I don’t think Spanish Love Songs does, either. I’d like to think we both believe that’s not naivety, but power. It’s the embers you need to really ignite a flame. After all, this is the band with a song titled “Optimism (As a Radical Life Choice)”. It’s a band whose crunching guitars and earnestness insist that despite death and depression and addiction, the instinct to survive shines brightly above all. That relentless hope resurfaces across Brave Faces Everyone’s 10 tracks even as it works through the bleakness of everyday life. - LL
Tumblr media
Tashi Dorji - Stateless (Drag City)
The magnum opus from the Asheville-based picker is a group of evocatively titled, disorderly songs about the desolate hellscape of America for outsiders and immigrants. Enigmatic in its nature, not exactly narrative, Stateless combines Dorji’s urgent strumming with moody motifs, captured beautifully in a studio setting for maximum emotional wallop. - JM
Tumblr media
Touche Amore - Lament (Epitaph)
Is this what an almost uplifting Touche Amore album sounds like? It’s cathartic in a newer way for the band, especially after the beautifully rendered grief of Stage Four. Lament loses none of the band’s aggression or urgency. “Come Heroine” thrusts listeners into that urgency and introduces a moment of warmth, Jeremy Bolm’s vocals still rasping and insistent: “You brought me in / You took to me / And reversed the atrophy.” The bounciness of “Reminders” may seem close to optimism, but a sharper look at the lyrics uncovers more than blindly looking to the things that bring joy. “I’ll Be Your Host” is reflective, a few years removed from Touche Amore’s previous album and the immediacy of loss, self-aware and growing, but still raw. The album closer, “A Forecast”, takes a turn, a lone voice and piano acting as a confessional before giving way to thrashing guitars and the realization that growth and reckoning with trauma doesn’t mean minimizing it. It means learning to keep moving forward and to stop for help when you may need it. - LL
Tumblr media
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud (Merge)
The best album yet from Katie Crutchfield is inspired by positive personal change (getting sober, dealing with codependency issues, her blossoming love with singer-songwriter Kevin Morby) and reflections on family and friends. Named after the suburb of Orlando where her father’s from, Saint Cloud is a genre-hopping collection of stories and feelings that doesn’t necessarily follow any semblance of narrative. On opener “Oxbow” and country-tinged ditty “Can’t Do Much”, Crutchfield’s increasingly aware of the need to pick your side and your battles, whether in the relationship between two people or between the allure of the bottle and the next-day hangover. Some of the best songs on the album see her finding commonalities with others as a means towards self-love. Gentle strummer “The Eye” refers to her natural creative relationships with Morby and her sister Allison. “War” she wrote for herself and best friend, who is also sober, the title a metaphor for one’s fight to remain substance-free. “Witches” is an ode to her best friends, including Allison and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan, all equally frustrated by the toxic nature of the music industry and the world at large, ultimately lifting each other up because they simply have each other.

Note
Hi C-Optimistic, Anon here to help you out of your angst woes. 😔 As for a prompt idea, how about this: Post 100th episode, Lena says f**k this s**t im out and f**ks off to Ireland. Just leave National City and all the drama, finds a quite cottage in the countryside, and get her head on straight (Lena POV).
hey anon, I appreciate you
“Villain,” she muttered to herself as she put the car in park and got out of the driver’s seat, slamming the door shut. “I’ll show you villain,” she continued mutinously, stalking over to the only building for miles.
“Uh, Lena, don’t you think maybe you should—”
“—I should what?” Lena demanded, not pausing for a moment. She pushed the door to the building open, using a little more force than strictly necessary, and stepped inside. Instantly, she coughed at the dust, looking around at the ramshackled cottage with a little bit of distaste. “I thought it would be...more homely,” she said, all her anger dissipating at the sight of her new residence for the foreseeable future.
“You bought an abandoned cottage in the middle of nowhere and you thought it would be homely?”
“It’s not the middle of nowhere,” Lena said immediately, defensive. “This is the countryside. It’s in the country.” She sounded weak to her own ears, and she knew her stalker had noticed, because she let out a soft sigh, coming up behind Lena and reaching out—almost as if she wanted to touch Lena’s shoulder.
“Lena, come on,” she said, in her annoying soft voice, “I know you’re upset, but come back home.”
“Home? Anywhere you are is not home,” Lena spat, turning to glare at her stalker. “Why don’t you just leave me alone? You’ve made yourself perfectly clear. I’m done with Lex, I’m done with you, I’m done with it all.” She gestured wildly at the dilapidated cottage. “I’m having an early retirement.”
“Lena, please—”
But Lena was unwilling to listen.
“Leave,” she hissed, eyes narrowed, shoving her stalker in the chest when she didn’t immediately move. It was like pushing at a boulder. “I said go, Kara!”
And finally, with slumped shoulders and a sad sigh, Kara listened.
x
She noticed Kara skulking about not a week later.
Lena had bicycled down to the nearest town, enjoying the excellent weather as she rode, her thoughts on her list of things she needed from the market. There were supplies she needed to order as she continued to work on her cottage, but there were also some in-season fruits she waited all week for, still excited at the prospect of freshly picked berries.
(Not for the first time, she wished her own garden was further along, and that growing things wasn’t so...slow.)
Kara was at the market.
She wasn’t being sneaky. Not really. She was ambling about, charming the locals with her bright smile and excited questions, blushing profusely when a little girl accused her of looking familiar, almost like Supergirl. (“Pffft,” Kara had said loudly, her voice unintentionally carrying over to Lena as she tried to hide her awkwardness and failed, “that’s a strange thing—what an interesting—what would she even be doing...nooo, I look like me. Just like me.”) She clearly wasn’t attempting to hide her presence from Lena, but Lena—who remembered quite clearly telling Kara to leave—was annoyed.
So she settled on ignoring Kara’s presence entirely.
It worked, for the most part. She did find her eyes straying at one point, when Kara was busy with a little boy, her eyes screwed up in concentration, her tongue sticking out, as she attempted to fix whatever toy she’d accidentally stepped on while failing miserably at following Lena covertly.
(It wasn’t until much later, when Lena was fixing herself dinner back at her more rugged than ramshackled cottage, that she wondered if Kara had done it all on purpose. The following loudly from a distance, never approaching, never making actual contact.
To suggest her friendship and presence would go nowhere, while also respecting Lena’s boundaries—making it quite clear she would not approach unless Lena initiated the contact.
It made Lena roll her eyes, a traitorous smile tugging at her lips.)
x
In her third week of solitude, Lena woke up one morning to letters.
A large stack, resting innocently behind her door, held together by a waxy piece of string she recognized from the town’s bookstore. Lena looked up and around her property, but she saw no sign of blue and red, so she bit her lip and picked up the letters.
It took her another whole day before she was mentally ready to open them.
They were from everyone—or, for the most part, that was. Letters from Nia, from Brainy, from Alex and Kelly (the way that letter was worded making Lena think it was written by Kelly), even a letter from J’onn. They were apologies, pleas for her to return, admissions of fault and guilt, and one (clearly written by Alex alone, without Kelly’s soft touch) that brought up all Lena had done and how that was painful too. Nia had given updates about National City, Brainy talked about some ideas he had for some of Lena’s R&D projects—abandoned, she supposed, now that she was here and Lex was still back in National City—and J’onn wrote about heroes and M’gann, and those who managed to buck what everyone expected them to be, just to be who they actually were.
The absence of Kara, in any of it, was glaring. No mentions of Kara (or Supergirl) in the letters, none of them written in Kara’s neat, loopy hand, not even a whiff of anything to do with the reporter, even though she was the only one who could’ve brought all these unmarked letters to her doorstep.
For whatever reason, it made Lena angry. She had been stalked and followed, Kara popping into town every time she happened to be there, but she couldn’t get a single, measly letter?
Well, she would show Kara, she thought to herself as she folded all the letters back up and shoved them in the envelopes. She would show her.
x
“You,” she told Kara unceremoniously in the middle of town—in the market, right in front of a stand full of cabbages—eyeing her former best friend with as much heat as she could muster (which, well, wasn’t much), “are such an idiot.”
And then she left.
x
Kara followed.
It took a few days, but the next time she saw Kara, it wasn’t as she hid behind locals and pretended to be endlessly interested in fresh vegetables. It was outside her door, moments after a soft knock.
“Hi,” Kara said, not quite meeting Lena’s eyes. “I brought you some things I thought you might miss from National City.” (An enormous bag was at her feet, full of what looked to be books, some tech Lena had been tinkering with in her spare time and had left in her apartment, photos and the like, and even takeout from Big Belly Burger.)
“Right,” Lena said slowly, letting out a breath. “Thanks.”
(If Kara expected to be invited in and was surprised when she wasn’t, she didn’t show it. If anything, she looked pleased at the two words Lena did speak.)
“Right, well. I’d best be off. Alex is making me spend time with her and Kelly. She says I’ve been distant lately and she doesn’t like what it’s been doing to our work relationship. By which I think she just misses me, but doesn’t want to admit it,” Kara rambled, taking several steps back as she spoke. (Lena missed that, she realized suddenly. She missed Kara’s stupid quirks, her soft voice. No matter how tainted their friendship now was, she still missed her best friend.)
Kara’s fingers had reached up to her glasses when Lena found her voice.
“How did you find me?” she asked, swallowing a little bit, wanting to hide just how much she wanted the answer to this question. “I took so many precautions, to make sure Lex couldn’t track me. New bank accounts, buying this cottage in another name….” She trailed off, suggesting all the work she’d put into finding this cottage without anyone knowing. “So what did I miss? And why hasn’t Lex been here yet?”
It was a mildly suggestive question—what did you do, she wanted to ask, but didn’t. What did you do that made Lex not find the same thing that led you here? What did you do to Lex?
“I didn’t find you because of a paper trail, Lena,” Kara said, her tone changing so much that Lena felt her heart pound harder and faster in response. “I don’t think you made any mistakes.”
“So how did you find me? You were at the cottage the same time I was. How?”
For a moment, it didn’t look like Kara would respond. But then:
“When I’m overwhelmed, especially by noise, I latch onto things that are familiar and comforting to me,” she explained slowly, shaking her head when Lena tried to interrupt. “I listen for Alex’s voice, Nia’s snores, and um,” she paused, her cheeks flaming, “your heartbeat.” She fiddled with her fingers, not meeting Lena’s eyes anymore. “Since we, well—I’d been listening to it more often. And then one day it was gone from National City, and I panicked, so I started searching for it...and found you while you were on your way here.”
“You found me by my heartbeat?” Lena asked, incredulous.
“It’s one of my favorite sounds,” Kara said, clearly without thinking, her hands nearly flying to her mouth and her eyes widening in panic. (And Lena’s traitorous heart pounded harder and harder in response, as if crying out for Kara to hear it.) “Lena,” Kara continued after a long moment, “are you planning on staying here?”
(Lena wondered what this was. A question for a question? Answer for an answer?
Or was it what it actually sounded like? Kara, her former best friend, longing to have Lena come back.)
“I don’t know,” Lena answered honestly. “There’s nothing for me to go back for.” She managed to leave off the yet, but just barely. Oddly, Kara didn’t seem to notice, if her crestfallen expression was anything to go by.
“Okay,” she said, nodding curtly. “I understand. I’ll leave you, uh, to it then.”
“I could use company. Sometimes. If you’re free,” Lena blurted as Kara bent at the knees and one hand went up to her glasses. “It would be...nice, I think.”
And Kara’s blinding smile was answer enough for Lena’s unasked question.
x
“How are you all managing without me there, anyway?” Lena asked some weeks later, somewhat used to their new give and take, somewhat used to Kara’s presence in her small cottage, feeling safe enough to ask and her curiosity finally getting the best of her.
Kara didn’t even look up from the recipe she was trying to work out, biting her lip as she leaned closer to the book, her forehead resting on the page, as if she hoped she’d learn how to cook through the power of osmosis.
“Not great,” she answered honestly, not looking up. “But that’s to be expected.”
“What does that mean?”
Kara pulled away from the book, eyeing Lena oddly, as if she was missing something obvious. “It’s crazy that you don’t see how important you are to m—us.”
Lena didn’t comment on Kara’s slip, nor did she allow herself to think about how it was her personally that mattered, and not her contributions, in Kara’s mind.
At least, she didn’t allow herself to think about it too much.
x
“Sometimes I get bored out here,” Lena admitted.
“I could bring you more things to do. More of your projects, more books?”
“That’s not it,” Lena sighed, pushing a cup of tea Kara’s way. Her cottage was homely now. Full of light and flowers and smelling of freshly baked cookies. She wondered why it didn’t feel like home unless she was sharing it with someone else. “I supposed I’m jealous. Of you and the others,” she clarified at Kara’s curious look. “Game nights and lunch and all that? I miss it.”
“Oh. Well, you’re not missing much.”
“What?”
“We haven’t done any of that since you left. It’s not the same without you.”
x
“Why do you keep coming back?” Lena asked one day, months down the line. Kara was helping in the garden, mud drying on her forehead where she wiped at it with the back of her hand. “Surely there’s something else you’d rather do. What about that guy, the one who asked you out?”
“Who?” Kara answered absentmindedly, tugging on a stubborn weed. “Ohh,” she continued, laughing a little as it finally clicked and she used a bit of her super strength, the weed flying out of the ground. “I always forget about him. Is that terrible?”
“Kara,” Lena admonished, waiting for an answer to her actual question.
“I don’t know what to tell you,” Kara admitted, leaning back so that she was sitting on her heels, turning to face Lena with a frown. “This is where I want to be.”
“Are you just here to convince me to come back?” Lena asked, several hours later, when the two of them were at her small table, having dinner. “Is that it?” (Fear made her ask. Anxiety made her ask. Curiosity made her ask. But also...well, hope made her ask.)
Kara was silent for a long moment, then she let out a deep breath. “I think, in the beginning. Yes. I kept coming because I wanted you to come home with me.”
“But now?”
“Now, I just want you to be happy. Wherever that is.”
Lena nodded, looking away from Kara after a moment. “National City was never my home,” she said, unsure why she said it, why she didn’t explain when Kara’s face fell but nodded knowingly.
“I get it,” she said, tone sad, but eyes flaming with promise. “I’m glad you made a home here. And I’ll keep you company as long as you’ll have me.”
No, you missed the point, Lena wanted to say. This cottage wasn’t her home either.
x
She didn’t worry when Kara didn’t visit for a week. She didn’t even worry when it stretched out for two. There was always something going on in the world, and she knew she couldn’t monopolize Kara’s time. But when two weeks stretched into a third, Lena knew something was wrong.
It was confirmed the moment she entered town, and walked into the nearest pub, seeing nearly half the townsfolk in there, all of them watching the television screen intently. Lena followed their gaze, and immediately, her heart sank at the breaking news playing out on the screen:
Supergirl still missing, traces of kryptonite at last spot she was seen
Lena turned around and rushed to her cottage, biking furiously, grabbing everything she needed for a trip back to National City.
Back to Kara.
x
After days of furious work, helping Alex and Brainy, allowing Nia to bully her into a nap, sighing in resignation when Kelly mediated an awkward hug between herself and Alex, and avoiding J’onn’s knowing gazes, Kara finally woke up.
She was still groggy, but a smile immediately tugged on her lips the moment her eyes fell on Lena.
“Am I dreaming,” she asked, holding her hand out for Lena to take, seemingly shocked when Lena actually took it, “or are you actually here with me?”
“I had to come back home,” Lena whispered, heart thudding in her chest. Kara’s eyes shut, even as her smile grew wider, and Lena knew she understood.
National City was never her home. Neither was that cottage.
Kara was.
(And from the way Lena’s heart pounded when Kara’s fingers intertwined with Lena’s, well, she didn’t think that would change anytime soon.)

Kara hasn't even fully closed the door behind her when small legs come running towards her. She turns just in time to catch Esme in her arms.
“Aunt Kara!”
Kara winces a little at the loud greeting, but she wraps her arms around her little niece anyway. When she pulls back enough to get an actual look at her, and at Lena, who’s hovering nearby in the kitchen, she’s lost for words.
Esme looks like a miniature version of Lena. They’re both wearing a white, flowy blouse, a black vest and black pants. Esme even curled her hair in a way that looks exactly like Lena’s.
“Hi Bug,” Kara stutters out. “You look…nice.”
Esme squirms excitedly and Kara decides to set her back down. Esme grins and does a quick twirl and then runs over to the coffee table to grab what looks like a small, leather-bound grimoire.
“I’m Aunt Lena!”
“I can see that,” Kara nods. “Is there, um, what’s the occasion?”
“We’re going to get candy!” Esme squeals.
It’s then that Lena finally speaks. “What she means is that we are taking her trick or treating later.”
“Ah. Okay. And the, um, the outfit?”
“Well, you see, Esme told me this morning that she wanted to be a witch for Halloween. But when I took her to the costume store, she didn’t like any of the costumes they had there.”
“Witches don’t wear pointy hats,” Esme exclaims, her little fists propped against her hips.
Slowly, Kara is beginning to understand.
“Right. So, this is a witch costume?”
“Yes! Because Aunt Lena is a witch. And I look like her now.”
Kara smiles, then. “You really do.”
Before Kara can say anything else, Esme runs toward the living room, where Kara can hear Kelly and Alex arguing about how much candy Esme should be allowed to bring home. She turns to Lena and presses a short kiss against her lips.
“Hi.”
“Mm. Hey,” Lena whispers. “Sorry about the ambush. I was going to text you that your sister showed up with Esme and Kelly, but then I got sidetracked with getting this costume situation sorted out.”
Kara chuckles a little. “All good. But,” she pauses, trying to catch Lena’s gaze, “are you okay with this? I’m sure Esme is going to tell anyone within earshot that she’s a witch, and well…”
“And she looks like me,” Lena finishes for her.
Kara nods.
“Yes, darling. I’m fine with it. I doubt anyone will recognize me, or understand the real meaning behind the costume. And if someone does, well, J’onn has offered to alter some memories if necessary.”
And that puts Kara’s mind at ease. She’s sure that Lena is right, that no one is really going to put two and two together and figure out that Lena is an actual, real life witch. But the fact that J’onn has offered to take care of things if it does happen makes her feel better.
Before Lena can explain more, Kelly appears in the kitchen, with Alex and Esme right behind her.
“Thank you for doing this,” Kelly says. It’s clear from her voice and her facial expression that she is truly grateful for whatever support they can get with raising Esme.
Kara beams. “Of course! I love going trick or treating!”
“Oh, I know that,” Kelly laughs before turning more to Lena. “I mostly meant thank you for, you know, rolling with this.” She waves her hands toward Esme, who is fiddling with her little grimoire.
Lena responds with a soft smile. “Anything for my god-daughter.”
When Kelly bends down to help Esme tie her shoes, Lena leans into Kara and whispers:
“Just so you know, I have a private trick or treat moment planned for us for later tonight. So maybe don’t eat too much candy. I wouldn’t want you to be out of commission due to a stomach ache.”
Kara blushes a little and swallows. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Come on, Aunt Kara, let’s go!” Esme yells, already half-way out the door.
Lena smirks. “Yes, Aunt Kara. Let’s go. We have a long evening ahead of us.”

All right. Thanks to @Wolfsbane-illustrations for the prompt.
However, I’m going to take some liberties: I don’t think Lena would have the same “motivation” as James to be Guardian. She wouldn’t disregard her role as the CEO of one of the most influential and powerful companies in the country. I also believe she would do it after knowing Kara’s identity as Supergirl and only after knowing all the times she was so close to dying and how many dangerous people are after her with the right weapons. So, either this story will ignore the fallout between them after the reveal, or it will be set after they move past it.
I’m also picturing her Guardian suit as a mix between Lexo-Suit and the Iron Man suit. Practical, light and functional. And obviously very high tech. Also her bike would be something like Batman would have.
And finally, I’ve decided to include the scene with Livewire from season 2 (I think?) when James was starting as Guardian and gets kidnapped with Man-hell trying to “save” Leslie. Because I miss her. So, she tried to sacrifice herself to save Kara, but they saved her somehow. I just love the idea of Livewire and Supergirl being sort of friends.
Anyway, here goes nothing. You can read it on AO3, if you rather.
-----------------------------------
Kara’s been having a month. The monster-of-the-week has become a monster-of-the-day kind of scenario, and she’s starting to feel like she can’t keep up, even with all her superpowers. Even with all the appreciated help: there’s Nia, Dreamer, who’s a fantastic mentee, both in the journalist way and in the hero way. Obviously, there’s Alex and the DEO, and J’onn and M’gann. She can always ask for the help of her other hero friends like Barry, Sara, Oliver, or Kate. And then there’s Guardian.
Kara frowns. She’s not sure how she feels about Guardian. The newest National City vigilante. She’s also not sure why she refers to them as “vigilante” and not hero. Maybe because she doesn’t know anything about them. Just that they seem to show up just in the nick of time to save the day if Kara finds herself overwhelmed. She’s suspicious of how they seem to be so evasive. Of course, she understands the need to privacy and keeping a secret identity. But they barely interact with her, or anyone, for that matter. Just the occasional witty or flirty comment before they leave. Don’t forget their suit is lead-lined, which makes Kara’s frown deepen. It seems a rather specific detail to conceal their identity from Supergirl.
So, imagine her surprise when she gets to the place where they have Leslie, sorry, Livewire strapped to a torture chair and finds not only Guardian incapacitated, but Brainy.
“What the heck!” She says, because, seriously? “Brainy!?”
“Ah. Supergirl. Greetings.” He says, and he’s smart enough to look apologetic.
“What are you doing here? Are you hurt?”
“No. I am at optimal performance. We just thought we could lend a hand and help miss Livewire here.” He nods towards the space behind Kara, from where she can hear a sardonic snort.
“Sure, champ. Good job” Leslie snarks. Kara turns to look at her over her shoulder because she sounds pained. She looks like she sounds, too. So Kara starts to make her way towards her, while she addresses Brainy again.
“We? As in, you and Guardian?” He looks at the mentioned vigilante sideways, straightens his spine, and then:
“Indeed”
So Kara takes a deep, deep breath, holds it in for 10 seconds like Kelly showed her. And exhales slowly through her mouth, while she checks on Leslie’s injuries. She smirks at Kara, Leslie. They share a look.
“Are you all right?” And she knows Leslie’s answer before she even finishes her, admittedly, silly question
“Peachy, blondie. Take your time.” And Kara sighs, again.
“Please, don’t zip away just yet. I’ll like for Alex to check you out before you leave.” She warns, begs? Leslie after releasing her.
“Hot older sister. Kinky.” And Kara can’t help but roll her eyes at her. Then she turns back to Brainy, who apparently is the sidekick for Guardian, which... Is Kara too old for this, already?
“Brainy, why are you working with Guardian?” She rubs her forehead as she can actually feel a headache starting right above her left eye.
“Well...” He clears his throat and then Guardian takes the chance to finally speak.
“How about you free us, Supergirl? Or are we under arrest?”
“I really don’t think you are in any position to talk to me like that... dude?” It comes out as a question, and Kara frowns, again. She actually has no idea if Guardian is a male or a female or something in between. They use a voice distorter, and it’s not like their suit has a reflection of their anatomical gender representation, like breasts, because what’s the functionality of that anyway?
... unless. Unless is like that old cartoon with Japanese robots and the female robot’s breasts are actual missiles? What was its name? Kenny used to nerd over it when she was a new kid on Earth.
“Yeah, you tell them, Sups!” Leslie is laughing, but it sounds a little breathless. And Kara is about to turn her attention back to her, but Guardian is not letting Livewire’s snark interrupt them from defending their case.
“Listen, we were just trying to help. We just did not expect them to be so prepared for a rescue mission.”
“Why wouldn’t they be prepared for a rescue mission? Livewire is a high profile metahuman, and they kidnapped her!” This was shaping as a useless discussion, but apparently, Leslie had enough of that.
“Awesome. Look, Sups, I am flattered that you think of me as a high profile metahuman and all. But what about that hot agent checking me out, huh?”
“Oh! Les... Livewire! Of course. Uh. I’m, I’m gonna pick you up, all right?”
“Yeah, yeah. You have my consent, babe.” And Kara can feel herself blushing deeply. So she picks her up and flies her fast to the DEO med bay. Leaving behind the outraged yell from Guardian. Which she promptly ignores.
·
“I could zap into their suit. You know. Sneak around a bit. If you want.” They’re almost at the DEO when Leslie breaks the silence.
“What?”
“Guardian. I could get into their circuits or something.”
“No. No, that’s... nice of you? But no. It could be dangerous.”
“Come on, Sups! I’m a high profile metahuman.” And she has the audacity of grinning up at Kara.
“Shut up. I don’t want you to do it. It’s such a violation of their privacy. Thank you, though.”
“Whatever.” And then: “Are you ever going to let me see the tentacles?”
“Leslie.”
“Ooh! Is it teeth?”
“What?”
“Do you have teeth down there?”
“I swear to Rao I’m going to drop you.”
·
When Kara gets back at the scene where Guardian and Brainy are still restrained at, it has been barely five minutes. She did not drop Leslie. But Guardian is grumbling and huffing, trying to break free. So she’s anticipating more snark, and she’s seriously just too tired for this.
“I’m taking you both to the DEO” She says, resolute, in her most authoritative voice, with her Supergirl hands-on-hips pose.
“With what charges? With what authority?” It’s like she was expecting the person behind the armor to agree, but she kinda wishes they were unconscious to avoid all this bickering.
“I just want to make sure you’re alright.”
“No. You just want to make sure you know who I am, so you can put a DEO lash on me.”
“Well, why are you so against working with us?”
“I work alone”
“Do you, now?” And Kara lifts an eyebrow pointedly looking at Brainy. And Guardian clears their throat.
“I mean, I don’t affiliate myself with shady government organizations.”
“He works for the shady government organization, though.”
“Not when he’s working with me.” There’s a distorted sigh. “Can you understand the need for keeping my identity secret? I would think you’d understand that, Supergirl.”
“I do. Look, I just want to make sure you’re not hurt.”
“I have people who can take care of that.”
“Fine,” Kara says after a tense stretch of silence. And proceeds to free them both. Guardian takes off immediately after a quiet thank you. So Kara is left with a sheepish looking Brainy.
“So.” He says, “uh. Could you not tell Nia about this.”
“Oh, I am definitely going to tell Nia about this. I’m going to tell her so hard.” She says while she’s starting to walk outside to take off.
“Are you not going to give me a lift?”
“No. Tell your new buddy to give you a lift. Oh, right! They left you here! Bye!”
She knows she’s being petty. But she really has had enough of people acting like dummies. She just wants to get home and eat pizza and potstickers and ice cream. So, she does. She did text Vazquez to pick up Brainy once she’s finished clearing the place, though. But he doesn’t need to know that. Let him squirm.
·
She was hoping for a few days of peace. But it’s only two days later when crap happens again.
“Supergirl.”
“Director.”
“We’ve detected a powerful electric signal near the Central Bank, on Main.”
“On my way”
“Supergirl. It looks like Livewire’s signal. Please, be careful.”
“Of course”
When she arrives at the scene she’s prepared for powerful electric weapons. Criminals. Even hostages. But what she’s not expecting is to find herself in a partially empty parking lot with a couple of Livewire clones and an unconscious Guardian laying on the ground. Fortunately, the real Livewire shows up a couple of seconds after her.
“Did you fuckers thought I would let you torture my powers out of me and let you chill?”
And between them both, they manage to incapacitate the bad guys with minimal damage to themselves. So now Kara’s focus is on the unconscious vigilante. She shakes them a little at first.
“Guardian” No response. So she shakes harder. “Guardian, can you hear me?”
“I don’t think they can, babe. You’ve gotta get the helmet out.” And Kara knows Leslie is right. But, it kind of feels like breaking a promise. She sighs, really didn’t want this to go down like this.
With a deep breath and an encouraging nod from Leslie, Kara rips the helmet from Guardians head. Carefully, but resolutely. And... What the actual...
“Oh, shit! Is that your girlfriend, Sups?”
Kara is so angry she can’t even correct Leslie on the fact that no, Lena Luthor is not Kara’s girlfriend. And Kara is probably going to strangle her before she can be. She scoops Lena into her arms and takes off warning Leslie to get to the DEO to get checked.
Kara lands with a crack to the landing balcony and a shake to the DEO building. Alex is approaching with a reproach dying in her mouth when she realizes that Kara is furious and the reason why laying unconscious in her arms.:
“Follow me.” Is all she says. No one else dares make a peep. Kara lays Lena softly on the bed and stays there, crossing her arms over her chest. “No. Get out.” Alex's words leave no room for argument, but Kara takes a breath to try anyway. “Kara, out. Please. Wait outside. I need to work and I can’t with you fuming down my neck. I promise you will be the first person in when I’m done. Please.”
Kara huffs and floats out to avoid destroying the room by stomping. It’s less than an hour later when Alex steps into the hallway with her. Her arms up, like she’s trying to calm down a wild animal. Which, rude, but fair.
“She’s fine. Got a good shock from one of the clones. A mild concussion, too. But nothing’s broken. Just a little rest and she’ll be good as new.”
Kara takes a deep breath to steel herself for the confrontation. But a strong hand in the middle of her chest ask her to stop.
“Kar. You should get checked, too. I know you received a couple of zaps yourself.”
“Later”
“Kara. You shouldn’t storm in like this. Maybe cool down a bit first.”
“Alex, let me through.” And she does.
Kara storms inside the room Lena’s lying in like a tornado before touching down.
“What were you thinking?”
“Kara”
“I thought you were done doing stupid things”
“Kara”
“Aren’t you supposed to be a genius? What. Were. You Thinking, Lena?”
“Will you calm down, Supergirl?”
“Don’t you dare! I will not calm down, Lena. What do you think you’re doing?”
“You don’t get to monopolize the heroing in this city, Kara”
“What are you talking about? What does that mean?”
“It means how dare you to question my decision to use my resources to help.”
“I am not questioning you using your resources to help, Lena. I am questioning your mental health while throwing yourself at danger!”
“You do it all the time!”
“I am a superpowered alien!”
“You are not invincible!”
“I kind of am!”
“No. No, you are not! I’ve seen your records. I’ve seen the files. You’ve been on the edge of death several times! You’ve died Kara!”
And Kara pauses, because this, this is something she has not yet come around to talk about in therapy. And this is something she’s not expecting to have to counter-argue right now. Lena’s breathing hard. So is Kara.
“You... I... Yeah, yeah ok. So imagine what could happen to you, then.”
“Kara”
“I can’t lose you! I can’t. I can’t keep losing people, Lena, please!” And a sob escapes without her permission, so she covers her face with her trembling hands,
“Kara... Darling, please. Come closer.” She does. She does because that’s enough. She just really needs a break. Kara feels Lena’s hand tugging at her wrist, pulling her closer still. “Will you lay with me?”
“You’re hurt”
“Not enough to prevent you to lay with me”
“Ok”
She drapes herself over Lena, like a blanket. Resting her head right over Lena’s heart. And closes her eyes.
"Kara, my suit is very, very high tech. It’s very good at protecting me from external threats. I’m not doing this thoughtlessly.”
“Why did you hide it from me?”
“I’m not sure. I guess part of me knew you’d try to dissuade me. Maybe it was thrilling to have this secret. I certainly didn’t want you to worry so much, or distract you from your fights and put you in any more danger.”
“We could work together”
“Really?”
“I mean, I really wish you’d stop. But I know you. And I... You must let Alex train you, though. I know one of your arguments is going to be that I am ok with Alex putting herself in danger all the time when she’s as human as you. But Alex is an elite special agent, Lena. She doesn’t only rely on the weapons and tech the DEO provides. You need to train.”
“I really don’t want to get tied to the DEO.”
“I don’t think you have to.” At Lena’s skeptical murmur Kara insists: “Alex is the Director, she wouldn’t force you to work with them. You could have your own base with your... wait. Wait! You said you have people who can take care of you! What does that mean? What people?”
“Well, there’s Jess, of course.”
“Of course”
“Sam...”
“Isn’t she in Metropolis?”
“Not for long”
“Ok, but how can she helo with your injuries?”
“She doesn’t.”
“Then who? Jess?”
“Not her, no.”
“Lena. Who?”
“All right, don’t get upset...”
“Oh, reassuring”
“You really have nothing to be worried about. I promise.”
“Lena. Who?”
“Lilian”
... “Who?”
“My mother, Lilian”
“Oh, oh I think I should definitely go get checked out. Because I could have sworn I heard you say that Lilian Luthor, a notorious terrorist, not only knows about your stint as a vigilante, but you’re saying you’re trusting your safety, your health, to her!”
“Well, that’s a bit of a dramatic summary, darling.”
“Is it, though? Which part, exactly?”
“I know there’s no excuse for what she’s done. I’m not trying to make little of her crimes. But there’s also no excuse for what I’ve done, and you seem fine with giving me second chances. And, frankly, Kara, I don’t think it’s right of you to imply I’m dumb enough to put my health in the hands of someone without making sure I can trust them” Lena huffs, and when Kara keeps quiet, contemplating, she insists: “She has no access to the missions, or any information that can compromise you, or myself., or the DEO. I’m making sure of that. She just occasionally helps in the lab or patches me up.”
“I understand. She is one brilliant scientist, after all.”
“Oh, if she hears you praising her like this you might win her over. Not many people acknowledge her achievements as more than the Luthor Matriarch.”
“Well, many people are dumb. Besides. She is your mom. And she already knows my identity, my weaknesses my address, kidnapped my foster father, tried to recruit my sister, kidnapped me, harvested my powers...”
“All right, all right. I get it!”
“I will give a second chance to anyone who loves you.”
With that, they stay cuddle in silence for several seconds, minutes, even. Until:
“Maybe we should let Alex in to check you up, huh?” And Kara groans, while burying her face in Lena's chest, which makes her blush and swallows hard.
“She’ll make me lay in the sun-bed.”
“I could go with you?”
“No, you’ll get burned under the radiation. Plus you need to rest.”
“You smell like fried pork, Supergirl.”
“Wow! That’s so rude, Guardian”
“I’m not in the business of sugar-coating truths, darling.”
“No, you’re in the Supergirl business now!”
“Are you two done? I’m kind of scared to come in and find a murder-suicide scenario... or worse, a both-naked scenario” Alex does sound disgusted at the end. Why are people in her life so rude? Kara sighs, but it’s Lena’s smiling voice that becomes Alex inside.
She’s not forced to lay in the sun-bed, but she is forced to lay on a bed under a sun lamp. Next to Lena’s bed, at least.
“Lena?”
“Yes?”
“How do you feel about missile breasts for your Guardian suit?”
... “Excuse me?”
“You know, your suit. ou could make it with breasts. But they’re actually missiles! Imagine the bad guys checking you out and them, boom! Missile to the face!”
“I don’t know how to respond to this”
“Just think about it”
“Sure.”
“Lena?”
“Yes, love?”
“I love you”.

Headcanon: Deus Ex Scuba Gear
Note: Spoilers for Bly Manor.
So, here is my Bly Manor/Supergirl crossover crackfic headcanon where Kara is Dani and her ex Mike gets killed by a truck when he walks into traffic after Kara comes out to him and breaks off their relationship.
“Mike, I think I’m gay,” the blonde whispers, too ashamed to speak any louder. The man next to her tenses slightly before a look of relief washes over him.
“Oh thank God,” he says, and smiles at a confused Kara.
“What? You’re okay with this?” Mike shrugs and shoots the woman his frustratingly disarming grin.
“I mean, am I glad I’m being dumped? No. Am I relieved that the reason is you aren’t into guys? Kind of.” Kara wrinkles her brows in confusion and he continues.
“I mean, I know I’m hot.” Mike grins again and winks at the blonde who purses her lips at his peacocking, “I thought maybe you were just frigid or something.”
“Mike!” Kara looks around to make sure no one is listening. Mike laughs and she shoots him a glare.
“Hey, you’re the one that decided to break my heart at the corner of a major intersection.”
He winks at her and she advances on the man, trying to shut him up. He skips away from her, ignoring the fact that he is now in the crosswalk of the intersection.
“Mike! Stop fooling around!” the blonde pleads but the man ignores her.
“Hey, were you checking out chicks while we were together?” He waggles his eyebrows and Kara balls her fists at her sides. She refuses to take the bait. The man just laughs at her silence. “Dude, you totally did. What’s your type?”
He goes quiet suddenly and his face lights up. Kara shakes her head. It is seldom a good thing when the man gets a light bulb moment.
“Hey Kara,” his face gets lecherous and Kara readies herself for some horrifying comment, “Would you let me watch?”
Kara’s face blooms red with embarrassment and anger. She steps closer to jab her finger against the man’s face and get her point across. However, Mike anticipates this and he takes another step back, grin still in place even as a truck barrels into his body. Kara stares in shock, midstep and with her finger still in the air as Mike is flung at least twenty feet down the street. The smell of burning rubber as the truck attempts to stop and the blaring sound of a horn being pressed much too late fill her senses.
Tumblr media
Kara: “No, Mike, not gay as in happy. Good lord, dude!”
Kara is at the hospital when Mike is pronounced dead. Rhea never really liked her so she leaves for her apartment, still shaken but confused about how she feels about what happened. On the one hand she feels responsible for what happened, but on the other hand, she almost feels relieved. Until, that is, she goes to wash her hands in the bathroom and sees Mike standing behind her. She screams and when she turns around, he is gone. It isn’t until a few days later that she hears someone walking around her apartment that she realizes what happened. She grabs her trusty bat and walks out, expecting some coke addict rifling through her bookshelves but instead sees Mike, pawing at her bookcase. He grunts in frustration when his hand goes through a book but cheers when he manages to knock one onto the floor. Kara drops the bat in shock and Mike turns around, grins wide and puts a hand up in a peace sign, just like when he was alive.
Tumblr media
Mike: “I’m still here, bro!”
Turns out Mike is tethered to Kara and it is a horrible, cruel curse. He is both the best and worst wingman and Kara is still not convinced he doesn’t try to peek when she is getting dressed or showering but he also helps her learn to be more confident. All his shameless arrogance makes him a great cheerleader, at least once they talk about some ground rules.
1. No creeping on Kara in the bathroom or when she is changing. Mike scoffs at this and mutters about being able to creep on hotter ladies.
2. No unsolicited advice or comments about women that Kara is not interested in pursuing a relationship with. This is added after a week of Mike making comments about women that had Kara blushing constantly, even at work.
3. No watching when Kara has a lady over. She wasn’t sure where Mike disappeared off to when she did manage to have a date come back to her place but he would always leave after shooting Kara another peace sign and telling her to “do the circle thing I showed you.”
It all hits the fan when Rhea gets wind of Kara dating women and she packs up and leaves. She does not want to deal with that fallout and she would rather get a fresh start somewhere else. Where is that where else? London, Bly Manor, American au pair, you know the rest.
Tumblr media
Kara: “Yeah, I’m gonna take a one way and gtfo of here.”
Who are our players at Bly?
Our cook Owen Sharma is good old Jack Spheer because sometimes these things write themselves. And who is our beloved Hannah Grose? Why, Lucy Lane. Because she was too good and I always want to see more of her. Plus she can be a stern little spitfire with the kids and ghosties (The kids refer to her to as Major). She takes her fine self and daydreams about the moment that charming Jack came over to get the job as a cook, not dead, just as a useless hetero (is that a thing? It is now...) that can’t fathom for some reason that Jack is totally in love with her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Rebecca Jessel and Peter Quint? Kelly Olsen (the only character with any brain cells half the time) and Andrea Rojas, our muy caliente Scotsman. Is that racist? No, but her horrendous accent might be a crime. This version has none of the controlling assholeroy of Peter and no secretly killing Rebecca. Just good old bad luck in a horror series. Andrea gets drunk and tries to dive into the lake to find the chest of loot she is convinced is down there so her and Kelly can run away to America.
Tumblr media
Andrea: “This is a file on all the reasons you should run away from this haunted ass creepy mansion and come with me to America. Also, there is a map I drew of the lake with an X where the loot most definitely is.”
Kelly: “This is just a picture of you in lingerie and a sheet of paper you colored blue with a big red X in the middle.”
Kelly dies trying to save her when Andrea starts to get hypothermia and they both drown in the freezing lake. Because why bury your gays when you can drown them? Amiright? Who finds their bodies the next day? This leads to the following section: Next slide, please!
Tumblr media
Who is standing in for Miles and Flora Wingrave? Why, Ruby and a tiny Nia, of course. Nia is a sweet baby angel and I want to meet her as a little sister, totally doted on by her big sister, Ruby. Nia sees Andrea and Kelly arguing like lesbians (so much hand waving and crying and angry whispering) on the far end of the lake while their blue popsicle bodies float around. Ruby and Lucy drag little Nia away from the scene.
Tumblr media
Nia: “My giant scarf is perfectly splendid! Also, I am baby.”
Things get really spicy when Kara shows up, ghost!Mike and all. He complains about not being able to haunt the “hot chick from apartment 314” any more, but he perks up at the thought of “British broads.” Kara had hoped he was tethered to National City or something, but it appears he is linked to her. Mike is ecstatic when he finds out Bly is full of ghosts. He is always off somewhere exploring the mansion and only pops in to tell Kara snippets of Bly’s history and its many inhabitants.
Meanwhile, we get to the real star of this indulgent charade. Lena as the wonderfully fit Irish (let her have the accent!) gardener, Jaime. She is convinced Kara is a corn-fed straighty from America until Kara throws herself at her in the greenhouse because flowers turn on lesbians (see Imagine You and Me and Georgia O'Keeffe’s many works. This is sapphic lore, kids.) She opens up about Mike and Lena smooches her so she doesn’t have to listen to the hot blonde’s delusions.
Tumblr media
Lena: “What do you mean it is too bright? What book? This is a watering can for my gardening activities. So is my fashionable, appropriately sized hat.”
Tumblr media
Kara: *OMG she is so hot and cool, what do I do?* “Hey, do you guys do the circle thing in the UK?”
Meanwhile, things are getting interesting with Mike and the ghosts: Kelly and Andrea, newly minted Bly ghosts, explain that they are stuck on the grounds. Mike, who believes in having the freedom of “you do you,” vows to break the curse. He strikes a heroic pose that makes Andrea roll her eyes but Kelly agrees they need to find out more about the origins of the Bly Manor curse.
Flashback episode in a horrid b/w tone because I want to show this is old, okay. It’s not like we could figure it out by the clothes. Or the set dressing. Or the fact that the one of the characters died of “the lung.”
Anyway, we have our sisters, Viola and the other one. Their names don’t really matter because they are going to be the brunette one and the blonde one, played by the queen of period series: Katie McGrath.
Anger-y brunette Katie, getting her smacking hand ready.
Tumblr media
And blonde, sad (but also evil? plot twist!) Katie, lusting after her brother in law.
Tumblr media
And they fight over none other than Daddy Cullen, Maxwell Lorde, because look at that hair, look at all those buttons, look at that big hand! Who could resist?
Tumblr media
The child is baby Lena being twirled by Anger-y Katie pre-“the lung” because let’s just have this turn into a black hole that destroys itself.
Tumblr media
Baby Lena: “Swing me, mummy. Swing me with your good lungs!”
Tumblr media
Anger-y Smack-You-Every-Time Katie: “I swung too close to the sky and now this is happening to me.”
So while Kara and Lena are christening all sorts of places at Bly (yes, even the master wing because, of course, the master wing), Mike, Andrea, and Kelly are incepting themselves into all sorts of memories and whatnot. Cue that montage!
404 ERROR. MONTAGE NOT FOUND.
Whoops, looks like we blew our budget on that black and white filter. Sorry about that.
Once the ghost trio realizes the chest in the lake doesn’t in fact hold some dragon’s hoard of gold, but the key to ending this madness, Mike pops in on Lena and Kara to bring them up to speed. Kara screams at him about the third rule while Lena tries to accept the fact that her girlfriend (yes, they are girlfriends by now, keep up) has a ghost for a best friend.
Kara makes Mike look away while her and Lena get dressed and after quite a bit of exposition, they decide to pull the chest up from the lake. Lucy and Jack have been off playing hide the croissant or whatever the straights do during their leisure time, but they quickly hop on the “break the Bly manor curse” train.
There is a fun B (C?) plot where Ruby and Nia steal Jack’s car and drive into town. No one in town cares because they are rich and all the adults at Bly are busy romancing each other and assume the girls are being odd rich kids playing somewhere in the manor.
The adults are planning how to get down to the chest without suffering Andrea and Kelly’s fate, when they find some scuba gear the kids bought on their last trip to town. It is wholly impractical but the adults shrug and accept the plot hole so they can hurry this along.
They draw straws and Kara has to dive down and tie some chains around the sunken chest. Lena jumps in front of limited edition Scuba Gear Kara to stop her but the American has to America so she dives into the freezing lake after a swoon inducing “I’ll be right back” kiss. Like, gifable on tumblr, twitter, and whatever new platform there is a hundred years from now.
Tumblr media
Scuba Gear Kara: “Guys, I can’t see anything through this helmet. Guys?“
After a few tense moments where Anger-y Olden Time™ Katie tries to stop Kara, Mike, Andrea, and Kelly step in and use their ghost powers to keep her away from Kara. Jack uses his car to pull up the haunted chest and they pry it open with a crowbar and plenty of moxie. The screams of slap happy Katie of the past ring out around the heroes as the curse is broken. The ghosts cheer, everyone laughs nervously (they know the end is never the end in a horror story) and Kara shivers from the cold until she is next to the fire, dry and cuddled up with Lena.
As her final act of revenge, Anger-y Katie gives Kara the Lung(!) but thanks to the power of Science, our spunky American pulls through after properly completing the full course of treatment and antibiotics. This includes Lena taking sexy care of her girlfriend. *wink*
***** westershiresauce is not a medical professional and their thoughts regarding the health benefits/healing powers of a sexy nurse!Lena are not verified. Don’t take srsly. *****
Cut to, one more garden and I can retire, Lena, sitting next to an immaculate shrub, waiting for her wife Kara to bring out the tea and biscuits.
THE END!
Tumblr media
Lena: “I swear to all that is holy, if that tea is shite, I am leaving her. It’s been like thirty years!”

what would it take to convince you to do all of the dialogue prompts? But if not how about 17 for supercat but with a happy ending if possible?
17. “Love is overrated.”
It’s the first time Kara’s ever been on a Tinder date(only downloading the app after caving to the pressure of her sister and her friends, insisting that she deserved to have some fun), and she thinks it might be the last, because it’s going horribly.
Nate had been nice when they’d been talking online, but in person, he doesn’t seem to be able to stop talking about himself for long enough to ask her anything about herself (unless it’s to proposition her), and Kara’s desperately searching her mind for an excuse to get her out of the bar when his phone rings.
“Sorry, I have to take this,” he says, and Kara nods, flooded with relief and wondering if she could live with herself if she ducked out the front door and hurried home before his return.
“Well, that was the most pitiful thing I’ve witnessedin a long time,” a voice drawls to Kara’s right – it’s both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, one that she’d used to hear every day, but now hasn’t in a long, long time. “Where on earth did you find him?”
Cat Grant slides into the bar stool beside her, looking as perfectly put-together as always, in a sleek blue dress that hugs her in all the right places, her hair, a few inches longer than when she’d leftNational City, curling around her shoulders, green eyes sparkling when they meet Kara’s as she raises a glass of red wine to her lips.
“Ms… Ms Grant?” Kara blinks at Cat in shock, wondering if her date had been so boring that it had put her to sleep, and she’s now dreaming.
“I know I’ve been gone for a while, Kara, but surelyit hasn’t been long enough for you to forget all about me.” Cat’s lips curl into a smirk as she sets her wine down on the bar, looking more relaxed and carefree than Kara thinks she’s ever seen her – stepping down as Press Secretary after a Republican she very much didn’t approve of had been elected seem to agree with her.
“I just didn’t expect to see you here.” Kara swivels onher stool to face Cat, resting an elbow on the smooth wood of the bar and settling her chin in the palm of her hand. “When did you get back?”
“A couple of days ago.”
“For good?”
“For now.” Cat purses her lips as she taps her fingerson the stem of her wine glass. “Until I decide what to do next. And you didnt answer my question – where did you find Mr tall dark and boring?”
“Tinder.”
“God good, Kara, are your dating prospects really solimited?” Cat looks horrified by the mere thought. “I’m positive that someone that looks like you doesn’t need an app to find a date.”
“Oh.” Kara blushes and looks away from Cat’s gaze, fiddling with the straw in her long-finished cocktail. “Thank you, but I haven’t exactly had much look in the dating department.”
“Yes, well, love is overrated,” Cat replies, tippingher head back as she drains the last of her wine. “So I wouldn’t worry yourself too much about it.”
“Still a cynic?” Kara asks, raising an eyebrow, overjoyed that such a terrible evening had taken a turn for the better. “Didn’t find someone to settle down with in D.C.?”
“God no.” Cat shudders at the thought. “I learned along time ago that I’m much better off alone.”
“Do you not get lonely?” Kara does, sometimes, whenever she sees her sister and Kelly, so happy and in love, wants that with a desperation that makes her ache.
“Not really. Perhaps I will, when Carter goes off the college, but,” Cat lifts her shoulders in a delicate shrug, “I have a couple of years to prepare myself for that.”
“How is he?”
“He’s good.” Cat’s smile is warm, her eyes bright. “Glad to be back in National City, I think. D.C. grew on him, but… this is where he grew up.”
“And are you? Glad to be back, I mean?”
“Yes and no.” Cat tilts her head to one side, considering, and Kara has to try very hard not to let her gaze wander along the elegant slope of her neck – she’d always thought Cat was attractive, she wasn’t blind, and that hadn’t changed in thethree years since they’d last seen one another. “It’s nice to be back on familiar ground, to see familiar faces,” she inclines her head towards Kara, who triesto hide her smile, “but a lot of things have changed, and in some ways it feels like a step backwards. It’s certainly strange seeing the CatCo building andknowing there’s no place for me there anymore.”
“I’m sure no-one would complain if you came back.”
“Oh,” Cat’s chuckle is low, makes Kara’s throat tight,“I’m sure a few people would. I wasn’t exactly the nicest boss in the world.” She signals the bartender with a wave of her hand. “Can I buy you anotherdrink?” She asks Kara, as he makes his way over to them, and just a few minutes ago she’d been desperate to leave but now she’d do anything to stay.
“Sure.”
“What ridiculously fruity concoction were you drinking?” Cat eyes Kara’s empty glass, coupled with a bright umbrella, with no small level of disdain.
“A mai tai.”
Cat looks highly offended, but she orders one all thesame, along with another glass of wine for herself.
“So, tell me, what’s changed since - ”
“Kara.” A hand skirts along the small of her back, andKara whirls around with a glare, ready to forcibly remove it – Nate, returning from his phonecall, hastily lifts it when he sees the look on her face. “Sorry about that. Do you want to get out of here?”
“Um…” Rejecting people has never been her strong suit, but thankfully, Cat is only too happy to step in to be her saviour.
“No, she wouldn’t,” Cat cuts in, as she hands Kara her cocktail. “She’s had a much better offer.”
“Kara?” Nate looks like he can’t quite comprehend it,looking between Cat and Kara with a frown on his face.
“She’s right, Nate, sorry. I just… don’t think we havemuch in common.”
“Suit yourself.” He looks haughty as he grabs hisjacket from the back of his stool. “You weren’t a good date anyway.” He storms off towards the door after that, and Cat scoffs as he walks away.
“Ignore him, Kara.” Cat waves towards where he’d disappeared. “He’s clearly deluded.”
“Is he, though?” Kara asks the question around herstraw as she sips at her drink. “I’ve never managed to keep a stable relationship, no-one ever asks me out… maybe I am a bad date. Maybe I’m the boring one.”
“I can assure you that you’re not,” Cat tells her, reaching out to pat her thigh. “Or I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you, would I? Besides, how could a superhero ever be boring?”
Kara chokes on a mouthful of mai tai, and it’s amiracle that it doesn’t come out of her nose – she coughs, and Cat just smirks, looking pleased with herself, and Kara wonders if she’d timed it like that on purpose.
“What, no denials?” Cat asks, when Kara doesn’trespond. “My, my, you have changed.”
“There’s no reason to, anymore,” Kara shrugs, and it’s nice to be able to be candid about this with Cat for a change. “If you wanted to hurt me with it, you’ve had ample opportunity.”
“Oh, Kara,” Cat sighs, “I’ve never wanted to hurt you.I know I did, when I first accused you.” It seems like a lifetime ago, when Cat had demanded she take of her glasses on her balcony, when they were bothdifferent people. “And I’m sorry about that.”
“It’s okay.”
“It’s not,” Cat says with a shake of her head. “Iunderstand why it made you not want to trust me.”
“It was never that,” Kara replies quietly. “It wasmore… the second someone finds out about my identity, it makes them a target. It puts them in danger, and the thought of something happening to you because of me… I couldn’t live with myself.”
“Oh, Kara.” There’s that hand again, patting herthigh, and when Cat leaves it there just a second too long, she forgets how to breathe. “I’ve dealt with my fair share of enemies over the years. And besides,I know if anyone ever threatened me, Supergirl wouldn’t have ever let them get close.” Cat’s eyes are soft, trusting, and Kara can’t help but smile, enjoyingbeing back around Cat, the light way it makes her feel, like she could float, and it’s different from when they’d used to talk, back when they’d workedtogether – now, they feel more like equals, it feels more like those nights where Supergirl had sought Cat out, landing on her balcony and seeking words ofwisdom.
“I’ve missed this,” Kara says, getting distracted bythe way Cat’s throat works as she takes a long sip of wine. “I wish we’d have kept in touch.” She’d tried to reach out, a few times, in the beginning, but Cat had never returned her calls, and eventually, she’d stopped trying.
“My fault,” Cat admits, eyes leaving Kara’s to staredown into her glass. “I was afraid of holding you back. And of staying too attached.”
“Attached?” Kara echoes. “To me?”
“Mm.” Cat’s eyes are still on her wine, pensive lookon her face. “You have that effect on people, haven’t you noticed?” Cat looks up, then, her eyes locking with Kara’s, and Kara feels trapped under the weightof her gaze.
“How many glasses of wine have you had?” Kara asks, because surely Cat is joking.
“Not enough to cloud my judgement, if that’s what you’re thinking,” Cat counters, smile tugging at the edges of her lips.
“Are you sure? Because this is coming out of nowhere.”
“To you, perhaps,” Cat concedes, tilting her head toone side and watching Kara closely. “But I’ve always admired you, Kara, always thought that you were extraordinary – even before I found out about yourpowers.”
The words shock her, and Kara wonders again if she’s dreaming, because surely this can’t be happening? Surely, surely, Cat Grant isn’t really sitting in-front of her right now, telling her all of the things that, a few years ago, she would’ve givenanything to hear.
“I always kept my distance because you were myassistant but when I saw you tonight…” Cat shrugs again. “I’m back in town, you seem to be single, and you don’t work for me anymore – I just couldn’t helpmyself.” She lifts her wine glass to her lips and downs the remaining liquid in one easy gulp. “And now I’ve said far too much, and I don’t want to make youuncomfortable, so I’ll take my leave. My number hasn’t changed, if you want to reach me.”
Cat throws a few notes onto the bar as a generous tip, before shrugging into her coat and striding towards the door on four inch heels and a saunter in her hips, Kara watching her go, sure there’s a dumbstruck expression on her face.
Her phone is in her hand before the door has evenswung shut behind her, and it only takes her a moment to locate the phone number that she hasn’t used in over three years.
“That was quick,” Cat answers on just the second ring, and Kara smiles as she finishes her own drink and climbs to her feet.
“Well, I figured we’d already waited long enough,” she replies, pressing the phone to her ear with her shoulder as she grabs her jacket and follows Cat to the door. “But what happened to being better offalone?”
“I lied,” Cat replies, and of course she did. She’s still outside the bar, one foot on the pavement and one foot inside the towncar that’s idling by the curb.
“Want a ride?” Cat asks, sliding the phone into herbag as Kara hangs up.
“Why, that’s awfully forward of you, Ms Grant,” Karareplies, made confident by Cat’s honesty, and she grins when the other woman rolls her eyes.
“Kara Danvers, I’m shocked.” She doesn’t look itthough, a smirk on her mouth as she deliberately drags her gaze down Kara’s frame. “Although, I do have an empty apartment waiting…” She trails off, quirking a suggestive eyebrow, and this absolutely was not how she expected her evening to go, but god, is she glad it did, because she can’t think of a better way to spend the night than alone with Cat, even if it is moving a little faster than she usually would.
“Lead the way.”

Supercorp: Sick of Slowburn - Idea #3
Kara and Lena are jogging through the park, as they do now regularly now that they’re friends. Their usual jogging path is blocked, so they’re forced to divert. The new path is sometimes used by vehicles, be it for park maintenance or setting up for special events. At the end of their new path, they come to a vehicle entry gate. It’s just a large steel bar about five feet off the ground, that’s currently down to deny vehicles unintended access to the park.
Kara can’t resist the urge and walks under the gate like she’s doing the limbo. Lena laughs at her, calling her a dork. Kara dares Lena to do it. Lena refuses, as she has no rhythm, isnt eleven, nor is she drunk at a wedding in her early 20s. Kara tells her it’s fun and she’s missing out, right before she limbos back under the gate to Lena. Lena laughs again.
Lena relents, telling Kara fine but that she has to do it again so Lena knows what to do. Kara eagerly does the limbo again. Lena tries, looking about as awkward as a newborn deer trying to walk and barely making it across. Kara is so proud of her. She’s about to congratulate Lena when her friend falls backward, hitting her head hard again the gate.
Kara rushes to Lena’s side to make sure she’s okay. Lena winces a little but tells her she’s fine. She pulls her fingers from where her head hit the bar and says “see? no blood.” Kara’s not amused. Her x-ray vision shows her that Lena’s skull isn’t cracked, nor is there any internal bleeding...but she is worried Lena might have a concussion. Lena doesn’t want to go to the hospital, but she will let Kara take her home and watch her for the rest of the day. They compromise after Kara insists that Lena at least let Alex check her out first.
Alex checks Lena out and aside from some swelling, she’s fine. Kara spends the day with her anyway just to be sure. Lena can’t say that she minds (she’s gotten a lot better about not working all the time.)
They stay on Kara’s couch, alternating between episodes of Mindhunter (Lena’s choice) and The Clone Wars (Kara loves Ahsoka okay.) They get up to use the bathroom, accept the deliveries of pizza (and potstickers) and change out Lena’s ice packs.
Around the fourth hour, Kara gets up to change Lena’s ice pack again. She asks her how she’s feeling. “Cold, but better” is all Lena replies. Kara looks at the injury and then she presses a kiss to make it feel better.
It’s totally normal and not at all weird. Kara’s given Lena forehead kisses before a bunch of times. Well, she’s almost given Lena forehead kisses a bunch of times. But she’s sure it’s fine.
Kara unintentionally catches the sound of Lena’s heart beating a little faster than normal. She’s sure it’s totally unrelated.
They keep watching tv. At one point they both reach for the last piece of pizza. Their hands bump into each other and Kara feels an actual honest-to-Rao static shock. They share a smile and she lets Lena have the last piece. Lena takes a few bites then holds it out in front of Kara, offering her a piece. Kara leans closer and just chomps right into it like it’s totally casual. Kara thinks it’s odd that Lena didn’t try to cut it in half first and that Kara just bit into it while Lena was holding it instead of taking the piece out of her hand. But that’s something that friends do...right? She’s sure she’s seen Alex do it before...with Kelly (and Maggie before that.) Well, Nia used to do it all the time...with Brainy. Hmm. Well, she’s sure there have to be some friends out there somewhere who behave like that. What other alternate explanation is there?
Lena takes her pizza back after Kara takes her bite. She doesn’t say a word about how Kara ate it, so either it’s not a big deal or she’s being polite about it, so Kara tries not to think about it. Kara hardly even notices when Lena doesn’t really fully move back to her side of the couch. They continue watching Mindhunter with Kara’s arm resting behind Lena’s head...
...right up until the moment that Anna Torv has a lesbian scene on screen and Lena realizes just how close she’s sitting next to Kara and she pulls away. It has nothing to do with watching a beautiful blonde in bed with a beautiful brunette on the tv, she tells herself. Things with Kara just come so naturally since she let her walls back down. Kara is hope, compassion, warmth and light and it’s just so easy for Lena to fall into her orbit...enough so that this time she happened to accidentally sit a little too close to Kara. All Lena did was rectify that by scootching back to her side of the couch and it just so happened to be at the moment a rather passionate lesbian scene was happening. Kara was smart enough to understand that and she was probably thinking the same thing, even though she hadn’t said anything...right?
Kara was not thinking the same thing. And the reason she hadn’t said anything is because she was speechless. Within the span of a few seconds, she’s seeing the stunning Anna Torv in bed with another woman, she’s realizing how close she is to the stunning woman sitting on her own couch and catches herself staring at Lena’s lips, neck and chest as Lena suddenly pulls away. Kara wonders when did she start staring at Lena’s lips, neck and chest? before immediately reprimanding herself with a don’t answer that. For a being powered by the sun who lives in California, Kara swears her body has never been more warm in her life.
Kara pauses the show to get another glass of water she finds herself needing to quench her sudden, desperate thirst. Lena asks Kara if she’ll bring her another ice pack. She’s not sure that she needs it for its original purpose, but it would help her cool down. She’s get it herself but Kara is already up and Lena needs a few seconds not being in Kara’s immediate proximity.
Kara brings Lena the ice pack and Lena thanks her for it. Kara asks Lena if she’s ready for her to unpause it. Lena tells her it’s late (it’s not) and she wonders if she should be heading home, omitting the fact that she doesn’t think she can handle unpausing that scene and being around Kara right now. Kara pouts her bottom lip and asks that Lena at least stay to finish the episode, then she’ll fly Lena home herself. Lena refuses to let Kara
They make it through the rest of the episode on opposite ends of the couch, stealing glances at each other when the other one isn’t looking, not realizing the other one is doing the exact same thing.
When it’s done, Lena alerts her driver where & when she needs to be picked up. Lena then leans over, putting her hand on Kara’s knee as she propels herself up and thanks Kara for having her over and taking care of her. Kara gets up and hugs her. They linger a little bit, Lena loving the feeling of being wrapped up in Kara’s arms and Kara enjoying holding Lena as close as physically possible.
They’re still really close when the hugs ends.
Lena presses a kiss to Kara’s cheek. She’s never done that before. Kara doesn’t say anything...she’s too busy thinking about the feel of Lena’s lips on her skin and how good it felt. She blushes a little.
Lena tells Kara her ride is downstairs and starts to head to the door. Kara snaps out of it “right! right!” and walks her to the door. As Kara opens it, Lena tells her she forgot something. Before Kara can ask what, Lena is grabbing a pen from her purse and a piece of Kara’s printer paper. She begins writing quickly.
“This is for you, but don’t open it until I tell you, okay? “Lena, wha-” “Do you trust me?” Lena asks as she finishes writing, folds the paper in half and seals it in an envelope. “Yes, of course” Kara doesn’t hesitate with her reply as she takes the envelope from Lena. She hugs Lena one last time before she watches her walk down the hall to the elevator.
Lena texts Kara when she gets home safely. Kara calls her and they chat for a few minutes before Kara starts asking Lena about the letter. Lena doesn’t give an inch beyond telling Kara it’s a surprise that slipped her mind until she was leaving. Kara asks what the occasion is and Lena tells her she’ll find out when she opens the letter. Kara tries not to pester her but she can’t help it. She only brings it up a few more times during the rest of their 57 minute phone call. Lena relents, telling her that Kara could open the letter whenever she wants but there’ll be a penalty. Kara wants to ask about the penalty, but Lena simply tells her good night and hangs up the phone.
After 42 agonizing minutes of debating whether or not to open it, Kara decides to risk the penalty. She opens the letter and her face beams as she reads it. She checks the time on her phone. 12:34am. She sends Lena another text. “You awake?” Lena replies back “Yes” fairly quickly. Kara calls her as soon she sees the reply. As soon as the call connects, Kara dives right in. “So I read the letter.” Lena waits for Kara to continue on, while Kara waits to see how Lena reacts. Lena breaks the silence first. “I see. So, I guess the question now is what would you like to do about it?” “Can I come over? Kara says nervously. Lena smiles wide, two sets of dimples on both cheeks. “Yes. I’ll meet you at the door.” Before she can make it to the front door, she hears Kara say “actually, I’m on your balcony” through her phone and sure enough, there she is.
Lena made Kara promise never to fly off or onto the balcony as Kara, only as Supergirl, to protect her identity. She should be upset that Kara broke that promise just now, but something about seeing Kara in her pajamas, a white tank top and bunny rabbit sweats, with the anticipation of what she thinks is about to happen, makes any trace of feeling upset disappear. At least for now; she might scold her in the morning.
Lena opens the door. They both say “hey” with 1,000 watt smiles on their face as Kara walks into the apartment. Kara fidgets with her hands. They both know why she’s there and it’s exciting yet terrifying at the same time and she can’t find the words. Lena places her hands on Kara’s and she calms down.
“Yes.” “Yes?” “Your letter...what you said. You were right and I’d like that very much.” “I’m...very, very glad to hear that.” Kara starts to walk over to Lena but Lena puts a hand on Kara’s chest to stop her. “I think there’s something you need to do first.” Kara looks confused, before Lena mouths the answer to her. Kara feels a little foolish “Oh, right!” She takes a deep breath, holds on to Lena’s hands “Lena, would you like to go out on a date...w-w-with me?” Lena beams up as she looks into Kara’s eyes and says “Yes Kara, I’d like that very much.” Kara is overwhelmed with joy. “Awesome! Um...Lena?” “Yes Kara” “Can I kiss y-” Lena’s lips are on her before she can finish the question. She really likes the feel of Lena’s lips. It’s a short, sweet kiss that’s both perfect and yet not enough. Lena pulls back “you were going to ask if you could kiss me right?” “Yep” “Okay good” Lena replies and then she kisses Kara again, her left hand holding Kara’s hip, the right one on the back of her neck. Kara has her left hand along the side of Lena’s torso and puts the her right on Lena’s face and caresses it with her thumb as she deepens the kiss.
The keep kissing like that for a while. It wasn’t until it escalated and Kara moved from Lena’s mouth to her jawline to her neck, causing Lena to open her eyes that either of them noticed they had been floating up towards Lena’s ceiling, the realization causing them both to come crashing down. Kara broke Lena’s fall and Lena’s couch broke Kara’s. They started laughing; first Lena, then Kara.
Once they got up and Kara pushed the two halves of the now destroyed couch to the side of the room, she walked over to Lena, held her hand and asked Lena “so, what should we do now?” “I’d like to head to bed - not like that. If you’re up for it, I want to talk about this...a-a-about us, and I didn’t expect the furniture in my living room to need replacing at 1:00am” Kara let’s out a chuckle and tells Lena to lead the way.
Lena and Kara continued talking until after 3am about everything. When they started realizing feelings, what this meant for their relationship, their sexualities (Lena had been with two other women before, but this was a first for Kara), for Supergirl, before both women felt too tired to continue. Kara kissed Lena goodnight and headed for the balcony when she asked Kara where she thought she was going. Kara said she was going home when Lena told her she was too tired to fly, that she’d feel better if Kara stayed the night and that she had a spare toothbrush in the top drawer of her bathroom cabinet. Kara couldn’t argue with any of those facts even if she wanted to. They both got ready for bed and then climbed into Lena’s mattress, Kara holding Lena in her arms.
At 6am, Lena’s alarms went off. She called Jess (her secretary), telling her she’d be out for the day and woke Kara up just enough to have her text Nia the same. Andrea wouldn’t be happy but Lena would smooth it over for Kara later. They both fell back asleep until around 9:47. Lena got up, brushed her teeth, used mouthwash before crawling back under the covers and into Kara’s arms.
Kara awoke not too long after that and after quickly kissing Lena in bed (she slept in Lena’s bed!) She went to brush teeth and use mouthwash as well. It wasn’t long afterward that they found themselves in bed again without a lot less spoken words and clothes than the night before.
When they both finally came down from their respective (and mutual) highs, and compliments were shared between a few lazy kisses, Kara suddenly to ask Lena a question. “So...what was your penalty for me opening the letter too soon?” Lena just laughed and said “Darling, I adore you but there was never going to be a penalty...especially after you just gave me a orgasm like that.” Kara smiled and kissed Lena again.
Across town, the sun shined through on an abandoned letter on the floor of Kara’s apartment.
“My Dearest Kara,
Darling, I’m in love with you. I’m sorry to be so blunt and to possibily be saying this to you for the first time in a letter, but as I’m writing this I think you’ve just started to realize you feel the same way. If this is something we haven’t discussed by the time you’ve read this letter, whether you were too impatient in waiting to read it or I’ve been too cowardly to approach you, please...find me and talk to me. And if you don’t feel the same way, I’ll understand and I’m sorry. But please don’t let me put up walls again.
Yours,
Lena”
All of this was 6x01 and the B-plot is Alex finding and fighting the new big bad of the season.
