chapter 3: the boys are back

“Oh my god,” Charles groaned as he ran over yet another virtual patch of dirt. “This is frustrating me so much.”

“If Alex didn’t have his problems in the straight—” Lando’s pixelated face complained from the corner of Charles’ monitor.

George snickered evilly as he clipped Alex’s rear right, even as his own lawnmower spun out.

“GEOOOOOOORGE!!! PLEASE!!! What the fuck, honestly, this guy—”

Charles navigated a turn to the left.

Then someone moaned, except the word moan did not do whatever that sound was justice. Mooed, maybe, like a fucking cow.

“What the—” he heard George say.

“WHAT WAS THAT???” Lando howled.

Charles couldn’t stop gasping. “DID YOU SHIT ON YOURSELF, ALEX?” he barely made out, before emitting an involuntary high-pitched shriek of laughter.

“Whaaaat?” Alex cried helplessly among the din.

“What was this NOISE, Alex?” Charles demanded. A tear snaked its way down each cheek. And then another. And then he realized he was crying, really crying, and he threw down his headset and ran to the bathroom.

“Alex,” Lando growled, “we lost Charles cause of you!"

Charles shuddered over the sink, splashed some water on his face, and ran back to his rig. “Sorry lads.”

“Whatever, Alex ruined any chance we had to keep playing,” Lando sneered. Alex rolled his eyes and flipped the lid off the top of a beer.

“Guys,” George said. “Not gonna lie, this has me kind of emo for the pandemic days.”

Charles felt a wave of relief wash over him. He wasn’t the only one who’d felt so…mushy. The crying might have been instigated by Alex being a complete degenerate, but he was suddenly overwhelmed by the realization that he and these three other guys, whose literal job it was to overtake each other on the track, had survived some of the worst days by just…existing together. Playing their games. Laughing when there wasn’t much else to laugh about.

“Aw, quit it George,” Lando said, “you’re gonna make Charles cry again.” George laughed amicably, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. And as the guys said their goodbyes and signed off, Charles’ DM lit up.

“What’s up?” Charles asked, when he and George were alone on the Discord.

George raised an eyebrow. “Just seemed like you were going through it for a second there, that’s all,” he said, in his smooth George way.

Charles was taken aback. George, although arguably a notch above Lando and Alex on the emotional intelligence scale, never was all that close with Charles. He suddenly remembered George being interviewed for his first points in 2021, his normally photogenic face crumpling as he cried. Actually, who was he kidding, the bastard was beautiful even when he did cry. Some people were just immune to blotchy faces and snotty noses, and the Brit’s worst was everyone else’s most fabulous. But perhaps it was that memory that inspired Charles to say, probably against his better judgment, “Maybe I am.”

“What’s going on?”

“Hmm, well…I dunno, do you ever feel like you don’t know what the other guys on the grid think of you?”

George looked thoughtful. “Yeah, definitely I do.”

“Well? Doesn't that stress you out at all?”

“I mean, sure it does. I guess that’s why the whole communication, team bonding thing is important. I just try to be honest with Lewis, we’re obviously not always on the same page all the time, but I’ve never regretted just telling him what I think. Or just asking him what he honestly thinks about—”

Charles realized that George thought he was hinting at drama between him and Carlos. Or scared about the prospect of having Hamilton as his teammate next year. “Wait,” he said hastily. “Just so you know, things are chill with Carlos. In fact, they’ve been pretty great. I’m gonna be sad when he leaves. But I’m not worried about Lewis, either.”

“Oh,” George said, now looking confused. “Then what exactly are you talking about?”

Charles panicked. He couldn’t just tell George Russell, Max, yeah, that Max, has hated me since we were literally children, and for a long time I hated him too. Then we tried to not hate each other, but now we’ve had these just—weird, that’s really the only way to describe it, moments that I keep replaying in my head, and it’s just driving me insane at this point. It’s the rival thing, right? Please tell me I’m actually just obsessed with winning, not obsessed with—

“Earth to Charles,” George said pointedly.

Charles felt his ears go violently red. “Sorry,” he squeaked.

“Jesus,” George said, his face softening. “Are you sure it’s a grid problem, as opposed to, I don’t know, a girl problem?”

“Ah, yeah. I mean, no. I mean, yeah, it’s like a girl problem. But it’s really a grid problem.” What? Charles was pretty sure he wasn’t capable of forming complete sentences at this point.

George folded his hands and leaned back in his chair. “I’m going to ask you a very, very personal question, and you don’t need to answer it if you don’t want to.”

Charles stared at him blankly.

“Do you like guys?”

Charles burst out laughing. George looked annoyed.

“No! I mean, of course I do as mates, just, you know, not like that. I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine,” George said, although his lips were tight at the corners. “Although I wouldn’t say that in front of Lando.”

Charles was dumbstruck. “Lando’s gay?”

“Bi. Didn’t you know? He had a thing for you at one point even. Max shut that shit down pretty quick though.”

Charles didn’t know what was more shocking, the revelation that Lando actually liked men, or that Max had, for some unknown reason, tried to prevent Lando from making a move on Charles. “Max?” he asked weakly.

“I mean, nothing against Lando,” George said. “He was convinced you weren’t straight. Max said a bunch of shit about how long he’s known you and that you were definitely not into guys. And then all the guys kind of realized at that point that you’d never really said anything one way or the other.”

He supposed this made sense. Sure, Charles had dated a few girls in the past, but before he became really famous, and none very seriously at all. And as for boys…never had he even considered the fact that he could be with one. But why was Max so convinced he was straight?

“Uh, hey, George,” Charles said. “Are you?”

George smirked cryptically. “I’m only going to say this because you seem to be going through a bit of a crisis, and I will personally put an end to your rear wing if this gets out, but I did kiss Alex once, a long time ago.”

Charles gaped.

“For absolutely no reason,” George continued. “We were alone at a party winding down, and he was giving me these eyes, and I suddenly felt like I…had to. Like if I didn’t, everything would just be wrong.”

“And how did that go?” Charles tried to keep his voice steady.

“I think it helped that we were a little drunk,” George chuckled. “We just carried on like it never happened for a while, then Alex got together with Lily. Actually, I talked to Lily and she told me that she knew about it. It was casual for him, I guess. All in good fun, just two stupid blokes. So then I knew I could joke about it with him.”

Charles relaxed. So George had just given it a go, and it was all fine. Probably a good experience, if anything, for them. Having a mate you could be that comfortable with…it must have been nice.

Then he thought of something.

“But it was casual for you too, yeah?”

George’s smile faded.

“I don’t know.”

notes: OKAY so i know i said there would not be more ~main~ content till next gp but i made the mistake of watching the twitch quartet stream which inspired this chapter HAHA i have fully given up on following the season and am now taking inspo from past gps

“seriously?! another party?” yn had groaned flopping onto the couch. “yeah we told you..anddd..” ann crossed her arms sitting on the kitchen countertop, “you/i forget.” ann and yn had said at the same time, a small smirk like smile formed onto ann’s lips as yn had a pout.

“i means they kinda plastered your name all over this saying you would be here..it’s too late to ditch.” kyuma slithered his hands through his hair as his head rested on the back of the single seater couch chair, his gaze fixated onto yn occasionally looking back at ann who was drinking her pineapple juice.

“but i’m tooo lazyyy~” yn groaned whined, “well too late start getting ready we need to go soon or we’ll hit traffic.” tatta’s tone was stern, he knew it was annoying but at the end of the day if yn had personally said yes to doing it. yn frustrated got off the coach walking to her room finding something nice to wear.

“don’t forget you have a media party to go to at the [company name] chairman’s house—kuina will be there and unfortunately dispatch as well!!” kyuma reminded her, yn’s eyes widened ever so slightly. she had forgotten about that as well. “well shit.” she groaned to herself shaking her head closing the door to get ready.

“even after being in the game for what 10+ years? she is quite forgetful…” ann had commented as she sipped on her pineapple juice in a plastic cup, “i mean cut her some slack you can already see the grey hairs on her head from all the scandals dispatch gets her in” tatta joked as kyuma laughed lightly.

“she isn’t even 30 and has more grey hairs—its funny but sad..she’s so..” kyuma put his hand on his chin, “overworked” the three of them said in unison earning laughs at how synced they were.

“she agrees to literally all of it..” tatta had sighed before lifting his eyebrow slightly, “..agreed to all of it except the drama, which she could’ve said no too.” tatta’s statement cause ann to stop drinking her pineapple juice; he stare beamed into tatta’s skull.

kyuma got the message giving tatta the what do you mean look. tatta has never sweated so much before—he had two people who scared him staring straight into his skull as if a red laser was going to be shot through him im sorry HAHAH.

“what do you mean by that?” ann questioned never taking her eyes off tatta, “she could’ve said no but she caved in since the new manager saw potential..” he had nervously licked his lips. “and did you tell yn this.” kyuma’s question felt more as a demand.

“I DID! she didn’t listen to me though she felt as if she needed to do the drama..” tatta nervously smiled wanting something good to happen, oh god he hated this so much. he was mentally curing himself for being it up.

“and what did she say.”

“she said she has too..she hates this new manger tho.” “DONT LOOK AT ME LOOK AT HER OR YKW BRING IT UP WITH THE MANAGER IM JUST HER DRIVER.”

ann had just hummed in a acknowledgment bushing her hair behind her ear. “we’ll talk to her when she gets back from her activities.” ann stated as kyuma nodded getting up from the seat patting tatta on the shoulder, “thank you for telling us” he tried to sound cherry but hell under all that he was upset

“YN HURRY UP OR YOULL BE LATE.” kyuma yelled causing yn to shuffle back over to the small living room, “jeez jeez i was just doing my hair—is this please-able?” yn said standing in front of them. she was wearing a black puff sleeve mini dress and white high tops, she really didn’t want her feet to hurt plus she thought it was cute.

“yes you look fine now go!! you’re going to late and you wouldn’t want that out..” ann warned her pushing her towards the door as tatta followed along-suit. “bring her back in one piece no scandals tatta or i will shoot lasers at you!” ann warner smiled at him, tatta just nodded.

“we’re here!” tatta smiled at yn who looked a little nervous, there was a grip she held on her dress that looked like she wanted to quit. “stage fright?” tatta hummed looking outside seeing many people lined up to take pictures of her.

“no. just the paparazzi, i just get nervous because what if i trip and fall and i look stupid?!” she had groaned as the grip loosened she looked out the window getting more anxious. “fuck I CANT DO THIS I HATE THEM” she complained.

tatta ended up slapping yn, “shut up. you look fine, now go in there and do that performance so we can get out of here.” tatta unlocked the door leaving the car to go open the door for yn, a little shocked tatta slapped her. a small giggle left her lips, “thank you for the reality check.” yn had smiled at tatta.

the lights were blinding—she couldn’t even see where she was going the only thing she could see is the carpet the led inside, quickly making her way inside. she made her way to the back where the other performers were getting ready.

her name was being called so much she would’ve thought she won an award or something. “i’m here!!” she had exclaimed raising her hand. the stage director smiled giving her the ear pieces she needed. quickly putting in the ear pieces she made sure they were put on properly.

she grabbed a picture that she kept in her spandex pockets, giving it a small kiss as goodluck—she was ready to perform. but as her name got announced a wave of nervousness washed over her again. she had to shake herself, those nerves are meaningless she told herself.

as the person said her name you made your way up to the stage with a bright smile on her face, waving to everyone or trying too. the lights were blinding..a little too blinding. you looked over to the person who was in control and motioned them to turn it down slightly. they got the hint and were more dimmed out.

“hello everyone!! hopefully you are enjoying the party!” yn had her hands around the microphone standing walking around the small stage, the screams from fans who made it in were evident. “that’s good to hear” yn had chuckled, “i’m going to be performing one of my personal favorites and one that i think everyone will enjoy…Romance!” she has exclaimed, a bunny like smile formed onto her lips.

the crowd was very static to hear you sing the song since it was one of your most popular one! “woah i didn’t know you loved this song so much!” yn had gotten to her position as the lights dimmed, closer her eyes a breathe of excitement made her bones shiver. it wasn’t cold by all means but those goosebumps from performing has merely came.

opening your eyes you were waiting for the music to que, a momentum was sounded in your earpiece to keep you on track. her eyes wandered around and had noticed a white hoodie that resembled chishiya, the comfort feeling washed over you knowing he was here, regardless that be he was invited or was here to watch you perform.

the music started causing yn to put on her stage demeanor, a very flirty yet calm fun loving presence. yn had her eyes following chishiya the whole time, she couldn’t take her eyes off him. but the show must go on, not wanting to cause a storm she pretended to flirt with the male and female fans. there was nothing wrong with some harmless fan service.

after her performance was over, it was rather quick with 3 songs nothing too much and nothing over the top, she had rushed off backstage wanting to take off the earpiece. a part of her wanted chishiya, there was this urge to go hug him and thank him for simply being there even if it was the smallest gesture.

you somewhat got tangled in your ear pieces; slight curse words were mumbled through her lips as she untangled herself; she started rushing to the door looking at the crowd trying to find that white hoodie that ended up not being there anymore. a frown was shown apon her lips. disappointed she made her way to the back door where tatta had been parked waiting for her.

she had pushed the door open a little too roughly, a groan was heard on the otherside causing yn to widen her eyes. she had quickly closed the door behind her looking around “IM SO SORRY I DIDNT KNOW YOU WERE HERE” yn worriedly squared down to their side.

the person shook their head with their hand on top of their head, “it’s fine it’s my fault for walking so close..” he groaned. his voice was soft yet low enough that made her blush. she stared at the person closely, the blonde hair and white hoodie looked so fimilar and it finally hit her, “CHISHIYA. OH MY GOD.”

she had moved his face towards hers, she felt the need to look at him to see if there was any injuries. blood was dripping from the side of his face; “you’re bleeding..” she pointed out, she was close to his face. the blush was streaming from her cheeks to her ears, the faint scent of a vanilla like strawberry cologne was evident.

“i’ll be fine it’s just blood, plus i’m a doctor.” he assured her getting up holding out his hand to pull her up, she took the offer getting off the ground. his cold hands were wrapped in his. he made no effort to remove his from hers, his steps were a little wonky. he felt a little lightheaded but tried to shake it off—it didn’t go unnoticed by yn.

“chishiya i need to clean it up..i cant just let you walk home with blood on the side of your head.” yn argued walking over to the busy tatta who was too busy playing on his phone. “TATTA HURRY UP AND TAKE US TP THE CHAIRMANS HOUSE I NEED TO CLEAN UP CHISHIYA!!” yn had exclaimed worriedly, she was talking so fast tatta only caught some of it but hurriedly started up the car.

“COME CHISHIYA COME.” yn pushed chishiya inside who ended up closing his eyes, the dizziness had became too much for him, “i just need water..” chishiya mumbled still holding yn’s hand. the sound of tatta honking was loud alongside the sharp turns.

“TATTA do we have water?!?” yn unbuckled crawling over to tatta, “no but we have juice box!” tatta didn’t bother to look back.

“JUICE BOX?! DO WE NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE??”

“NO BECAUSE THATS ALL YOU LIKE TO BRING WITH YOU.”

“YOU SHOULF COME PREPARED.”

“THATS HARD WHEN ALL YOU PACK JUICE BOXES.”

they bickered some more causing chishiya to groan “just give me a fucking juice box.” the grip on his and yn’s hands tightened causing yn to look back at him, a sorry escaped her lips.

she had handed him a juice box that had been in the mini cooler tatta carrie’s around for yn, “thank you” chishiya opened his eyes slowly to drink from the juice box. “fruit punch? hmm” he said as if he was critiquing her. “yes i think fruit punch is the best go to flavor from any brand~” yn had hummed sitting back down at the seat next to chishiya.

yn had started rubbing her thumb in small circle motions, “tatta can you drive any faster..” yn cleared her throat not wanting to annoy chishiya, “IM TRYING. there is a thing called traffic.” tatta scowled.

the three had finally made it to the chairman’s house, ushering chishiya into the house thankfully everyone had been outside at the moment. tatta went outside to go tell kuina yn was here alongside chishiya.

yn had ushered chishiya into one of the empty rooms near the backyard. “i don’t know who’s room this is but i don’t care.” yn said pushing chishiya down onto the bed rummaging to find some alcohol wipes and bandages,

she had found some and cleaned up the wound, casual hisses escaped chishiya’s lips “i thought you were a doctor..surpised you are in pain.” yn had snarked a comment as she went to go throw away the used products, “i’m a doctor not superman.” chishiya clarified back pulling out another juice box from his pockets.

yn had raised an eyebrow, “isn’t that mine..” she looked at him, “yeah but i took it” he smiled cheekily casually drinking it. yn rolled her eyes in amusement, her phone had been spammed by kuina asking where she was and that they are asking her to come perform now.

a sigh escaped her lips “i need to go..” she said as she looked at her phone, chishiya simply hummed knowing she had to do her job. “i’ll be back to pick you up and drop you off at home” yn akwardly smiled at him, before skipping off into the backyard.

yn made sure nobody saw her and sighed in relief, shaking off any nerves that might of been there. she saw kuina and skipped towards her earning a pinch from her, a pout was evident. “i’m sorry i am late..i got wrapped up in something hehe..” yn tried to seem less akward.

she shook the chairman’s hand, “lovely party by the way!” she wanted to be nice when in reality it was a burning business party. the chairman smiled at her positive comment, “don’t worry about being late, if anything everyone was just here early.” he laughed at his own statement and kuina stiffened a chuckle.

yn had just nodded grabbing the guitar that had been propped next to the wooden stool, this was where she had to perform one of her unreleased songs. i mean she’ll get what she’ll get. tuning the guitar she strum in it make sure it sounded nice.

yn had tapped on the microphone gently, “hello hello?” she talked into the mic, “is this working??” she asked looking around. people gave her thumbs up; “well great! hello everyone welcome to the party even if i’m half an hour late welcome!!” she giggled.

chishiya heard some commotion come from outside and it had sounded like yn’s voice, something inside him told him to go outside onto the balcony. and so he listened to those urges and walked onto the balcony leaning against the railing, hands crossed—hoodie draped over his head (WE ALL KNOW THAT SCENE FROM S1 EP3.)

“this is one of my unreleased songs..i’m a little nervous to play this but HERE WE GO HAHA” yn’s voiced boomed from the small speakers. “this song was actually dedicated to one of my crushes i’ve had since my childhood..so do enjoy.”

“it’s called the glue song.” yn had a smile so bright it would light up the whole room. the soft strumming of the guitar with the gentle vocals lured chishiya into it. its almost as if he was being serenaded—and he wasn’t complaining.

AWW GENE WRITING HIS SONG <3 eugene mirman isnt a Good singer (not hating he literally says that all the time. they have to record each line seperately bcuz he cant sing on key) so its hard to tell when they're trying to make gene's songs seem good or not but this is really sweet. u can tell he just loves music so much

why is gene's song kinda making me emotional..... like this show is usually 50/50 on if it actually wants to take gene's songwriting ability seriously but in this episode its so clear how much he LOVES music and songwriting and how talented he is at it. he has trouble with focus and commitment sometimes but thats never an issue when it comes to his music and he'd happily spend an entire afternoon writing a song from start to finish (even skipping out on dinner) because he was so hyperfocused. love how much respect they give gene in this episode tbh

deeply appreciate the "larry murphy as teddy" credit despite teddy not having one single line in this entire episode. Literally just a legacy credit at this point

I LOVED THIS EPISODE 😭😭💕 i dont think it'll be as widely popular as some other episodes this season but as a gene fan and an artist this episode really resonated with me. the ending sequence was actually really beautiful (gives me the same vibes as "your heart's not broken its only growing" tbh) and i loved gene's song and all the different costumes they put him in for his dreams!! tina and louise's subplot was really cute too. very enjoyable episode if you're a gene fan or just a casual viewer who wishes he got more focus. he's SO SWEET and so passionate <3

My Top 15 K-Pop Songs of 2023

I genuinely don't know how, but somehow we have made it to December 10 2023, exactly 1 year after my top songs of 2022 post which I've decided to make a permanent thing on this blog. This year I was a lot more organized with formulating this list - I created a spotify playlist in January, and any kpop songs I cared about this year I added to it in chronological order. This list includes songs released between 2022/12/10 and 2023/12/10, and is entirely based on my personal opinion - feel free to let me know ur top songs of the year in the comments and rbs <33

(15) BYOB (bring your own best friend) (English Ver.) - Billlie

I just know some eyebrows are being raised but HEAR ME OUT, this song just speaks to me. It’s not a club banger, it's not an anthemic stadium hit, but it is something for the girlies, and I love it.

(14) Girls' Capitalism - TripleS LOVElution

What a hilarious concept for a song, TripleS is too good. Is this song literally just ‘Generation’ the sequel? Yes! I don’t care!! It’s really good!!!

(13) Standing Next To You - Jungkook (BTS)

Now I’m not an army, and none of Jungkook’s previous singles really spoke to me, they were catchy of course but not for me. This song, on the other hand, is artistry. His passion for what he does is so obvious in this song, I am severely impressed.

(12) Spicy - aespa

Aespa just KNOWS how to do a concept. So many other groups would feel stagnant with the futuristic concept, but aespa keep reinventing themselves perfectly while retaining a sound that is so distinctly them. Spicy is peak girl pop; Ningning you outdid yourself on this one.

(11) Drama - aespa

Can aespa release a bad title track??? Drama would probably be higher if it came out earlier, but based on the month I’ve been listening to it, this is an absolute punch up for aespa. Our stint in the real world was fun and all, but we’re in kwangya again and it feels fucking good. Aespa, keep doing what you’re doing, and I’ll keep streaming.

(10) Fast Forward - JEON SOMI

People didn’t like this song this year, but I fucking loved it and this is my list. As a UK resident and 80s music enjoyer, this spoke to me on a molecular level. I know it's trashy, I know it's been done before, I don't care. Fast Forward is amazing.

Category is: Boy Group Kpop (but it's actually good). Pure excellence, this is how to sample a classic song, this is how to debut, this is how to break the mold of boy groups and do it with actually good music (cough cough boynextdoor cough cough). This is fromis_9’s second time showing up very high on my yearly roundups, I’m thinking I need to pay more attention to them. This song is the shit I live for in kpop, its SO HIGH QUALITY. Not a second wasted in this song, just pure goodness throughout. Fromis’s ability to be so extremely on trend never ceases to amaze me. This song is really fucking good, and the whole album is too good as well. Fromis_9, you have my attention. (that actually wasn’t on purpose lol)

(4) Air Force One - ODD EYE CIRCLE

Utter euphoria. That’s what this song feels like. LOONA had a rough 2022, and orbits were feeling it. We were boycotting and fighting for the girls to be free of that fucking company, and when we won, we were happy of course, but mostly exhausted. Then Odd Eye Circle dropped ‘Air Force One’. This song feels like a second wind, it builds up and up from the first second, tension rising, exhaustion fading and then ‘ready set and GO’ and its ANTHEMIC. You can exhale now, the work is done, LOONA is fucking back.

(3) OMG - NewJeans

Oh look, more NewJeans. The audacity to release one of the best songs of the year on January 2nd is crazy. ‘OMG’ is so effortlessly catchy, it’s ridiculous. It’s full to the brim of hooks and creative melodies, this is pop music at its best. It’s serotonin in a song, and the ability and self assurance of the members in their skills is palpable, and oozes from the seams of the track. In a somewhat forgettable year of Kpop, NewJeans were constantly reinventing and redefining what a hit is, and OMG is the physical form of that. Congratulations NewJeans, nobody is doing it like you.

(2) Sugarcoat (NATTY Solo) - KISS OF LIFE

I am being deadly serious when I say this song altered something in my brain. I struggle to comprehend how much I love this song, and I’m struggling even more to express that in words. I found Kiss of Love’s other debut songs to be quite fun, but this song eclipses anything they have ever and will ever release. Natty is such a powerhouse, I am in awe of her skill. If you haven’t heard this song, which is upsettingly likely as while this song had a moment on TikTok earlier this year, it was still a quite niche trend that didn’t last long, PLEASE go and listen, this was the best song released in 2023. But, this list doesn’t just include 2023. It also includes that tiny window after December 10 when literally no one releases music. No one except…

Ditto is one of those songs where you listen to it for the first time and you’re left a little bit speechless at the end. I don’t think I’m ever going to forget this song, or how it makes me feel. Ditto has changed the kpop industry forever, and it will go down in history as a defining moment of the genre. It’s melancholic and nostalgic and heartfelt, it's laughing through your tears, it’s hugging your best friend before you go your separate paths in life. I still get a little tug on my heart whenever Hyein’s beautiful intro vocals come in, and I think I always will. NewJeans, you’ve released a lot of amazing music this year, but thank you especially for this one, I’ll love it forever.

You said you were so sad greg wasn't with you 24/7 in your life so allow me to shed some light on a gaggle of reasons why he's a pain!

firstly, he spills. This man is infuckingcapable of pouring liquids or moving them from point a to point b without making a whole mess. So every morning if you wake up after him, there's water slopped all down the front of the fridge, a puddle beneath it. Your poor keurig is going to shock somebody because it's sitting in a puddle of coffee. NOT TO MENTION the state of this man's clothes. You make him tuck his napkin into his collar like his life depends on it because you cannot take one more red wine stain on his nice shirts. You've joked with him for years now about getting him an adult BIB because he really is that bad. Every surface in your kitchen is always wet from where he's either left a spill behind OR he's mopped it up by spreading it all over the bench.

secondly, greg is a whistler. Your mum always told you only happy people know how to whistle, so when you met Greg and he could blissfully create the tune of 'livin la vida loca', you thought you'd found the happiest man alive. Of course, after years of listening to him whistle ALL THE TIME, it's lost a little of it's charm. You now end up trying to tune out the high frequencies when you have work to do, but you can't bring yourself to yell at him for being happy. so, you deal with it.

the same CANNOT be said for when you two are sleeping, and greg doesn't snore, his nose whistles in his sleep. it's far less mood-lifting and in-tune than his usual song, and man does it drive you batshit crazy. EVERY time you're drifting off to sleep in his arms, wondering how you got so lucky, there's suddenly the sound of either a very large mosquito or a very small steam train in your ears. It's shrill and it keeps you up all night. You've tried the nasal strips to no avail. You end up buying a white noise machine to blast at its highest volume and hoping that'll cover his high pitched breathing.

Greg looks at you. A lot. It's a beautiful lovesick puppy look in his big doey eyes, but over time it's become a dangerous habit. He doesn't notice literally anything else around the two of you. He's TERRIBLE at judging when to cross the street, much too enthralled by talking to you and holding you close and you always end up yanking him back by his sleeve as a car whizzes by you two. "Greg did you see that new restaurant that opened up just around the corner?" No. Of course he didn't. He never ever does. He's not capable of noticing things that aren't directly between his eyes and your face. You want to gossip with him about how your friend was pulling away from her boyfriend when you guys went out dancing last night? he doesn't know what you're talking about. He was busy admiring your outfit and the way the cheesy disco-ball made your eyes sparkle.

Speaking of gossip, he never gets you any. He is too dedicated and frankly too self-satisfied and disinterested to go digging around for any interesting tea around his office. He never hears about the drama, unless it's because he was asking somebody how they've been. It has to present itself directly to him for him to take any notice of the juiciest details.

Greg is practically allergic to spice. You put pepper in his food and he'll turn to you with a light sheen of sweat and lie to you through gritted teeth about how delicious it is. His tongue is numb. He's almost crying but he'll still tell you he loves the food. You have to cook everything so bland for your sweet darling boy to handle it.

Also, he eats EVERYTHING. There's no such thing as leftovers in your house and there probably never will be again. You swear his mother was right about him having hollow legs. He can eat enough for a family of five and still go searching for dessert. Don't even think about meal prepping your lunches for the week and leaving them in the fridge. They're gone. Every time you turn around he's got an emptied vessel of food in hand. And once he's burned through all the real food in the house, he's eating boxes of dry cereal, old dates, raw carrots from the crisper, anything he can get his hands on. On the bright side, you never have to leave food behind at a restaurant. Your boyfriend can ALWAYS finish it with a smile on his face (unless of course it's even remotely spicy).

I tried making these all obviously forgivable traits, because I don't want any of us to really hate greg. But these are some pretty good reasons to miss him a whole lot less.

Audiodrama Recommendations

Since I see so many requests for recommendations (mainly on the Audiodrama Subreddit) and make plenty of my own requests 😚

I decided a few months back that it seemed the least I could do was to pay the kindness forward (for all the times y’all have supplied me with suggestions).

Before browsing my list- I think it’s important to have a general idea of what kind of person the AD-lover is before getting your hopes up by their recommendations- because, taste is subjective, no? 😉☺️🌟

So, to me, audio drama is defined by having a full-cast of talented voice actors who’s job is to bring a well-written script to life. It is my opinion that *narration* has *no place* in audio drama **unless** it’s *absolutely essential* to the development of the plot as the script requires.

I’m a lover of all things **surreal** ( favorite Artist? Salvador Dalí, favorite author? Rob Shearman 🫠)- I have LOTS of weird sci-fi/horror/thriller/mystery AD’s under my belt.. (I have literally cleaned out the entire *Big Finish Audio* catalogue. 😳)

I grew up on horror everything - I was 5 when I saw *Poltergeist* 👀 so… and was reading my parents Stephen King books in elementary school 😅🙈🤷🏻‍♀️ - by the time I hit highschool I had watched every horror film in Blockbuster (wow I am old 🤦🏻‍♀️) - from the classics like *Psycho* & The Exorcist to the cheesy 80s b-roll slasher films 🙈😂🤣.

That said - I am an equal opportunity listener and I love many shades of comedy dramas. Though I do prefer my comedy to have a bit of *bite* to it.. 😅 and I’m not here for narration. Full cast audiodrama with sound production is my thing. 😅😉😘

as an adult I am partial to UK/Australian/Canada based entertainment. Even though I have lived in NYC my whole life 🤷🏻‍♀️

—The Piper - (BBC) paranormal/sci-fi detective mystery/horror story (full cast audio drama)

— Jackie the Ripper : the infamous 19th century Whitechapel murders retold with some very sociologically-relevant, feminist twists. I debated whether to place this in the comedy or sci-fi/horror section because, technically, it’s a brilliantly British & even mix of both. Description from their website: “in this modern twist, men are the victims of dark, sexually aggressive murders. The kind that leave them penis-less... Behind all the bloodshed is a woman, Jackie, a ruthless serial killer ready to strike again, and again, and again….without a single ounce of remorse and ready to share it all on social media.”

— BODY HORROR (BBC) : psychological mystery thriller (contrary to the title of the piece, it’s not even remotely in the body horror subgenre lol - no gore or any talk of blood 🩸 because it’s not necessary - this one cuts deep, in particular for any1 who’s suffered from issues of identity or body-image disorders).

—In Another Room : paranormal investigation turned straight-horror

—Fulmar’s Folly uk-based post-apocalyptic water world

— Red Valley : surrealist-sci-fi-thriller-horror full cast UK audio drama. BRILLIANT plot & a few thought-provoking mysteries. S1 & 2 end w/ incredible twists & had me in tears one moment; and laughing the next. S3 is in the making & will be it’s final season; completing the story.

— Lusus - (BBC)- *like* an anthology (which I am not really into anthologies unless they are super original 😅) but if you *pay attention*, each very different story is linked. Each episode is unique in its own subgenre of the horror/mystery category.

—5 Week Countdown

— Murmurs (BBC) high-concept, surrealistic sci-fi-horror

—Limelight - another BBC AD: composed of mini-serials. My personal favorites are English Rose (5 part mini-series) ,The System series 1 (6 parts) & 2 (5 parts), Dead Hand (5 part mini-series, each episode a half an hour run-time), & Steelheads (5 parts)

—**Weird Tales** : (BBC) Some of these were just phenomenal. They ease you in with *The Fly* (not associated with the movie) and then they dial up the psychological fear-factor times 10 for *The Loop* - which was my favorite of the entire series. But they are all great (though the framing device is lazy & unnecessary)

— Malevolent : an indie lovecraftian tale

— Dashing Onions Audio : I read a review while Google searching best audiodrama - the mini series When We Were Two (3 part mini-series) was a perfect recommendation- this is how *every* Twilight Zone episode should have been. Upstairs, Upstairs was good just too short. Customs is a master class in script editing. Overall I prefer their mini series.

— Video Palace : traditional horror story

— The Man in Black bought on audible the version with Mark Gatiss; listened to the OG version on the BBC SOUNDS app. ((Anthology-horror)) Each episode is the length of many modern podcasted-audiodrama’s full seasons.

— Dangerous Visions (BBC) Horror/thriller

— Forest 404 (bbc) sci-fi/fantasy-thriller; hard to actually put this one into a genre category..but it’s written by Timothy X Attack, & if you’re a fan of his work with **Big Finish Audio**, it’s worth ur time.

— The Message sci-fi/mystery/thriller

— LifeAfter sci-fi/mystery/thriller

— Archive 81 : ((i suggest u start with S3. If you like it, wither go back to S1 & continue in order, or stick with the “backwards” route; going from S3->S2->S1 😉))

— The Imperfection : award winning. Any more description will ruin it. Go in cold.

— Who Killed Alaska? : sci-fi/mystery/thriller w/elements of surrealism,dark comedy, & possibilities of the paranormal..?

— How I Died : ongoing sci-fi/mystery/horror-thriller

— The Cypher : truly a great mystery (or mysteries..?), definitely a futuristic, world. Sci-fi thriller. Also by the BBC but available on most podcasting apps like the other BBC AD’s I have recommended here (spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Pocket Casts, a few are even available on audible)

— Petrified: Ireland based award winning full cast horror audio drama

— Subsister: A Real Podcast ongoing sci-fi mystery with multi-media/arg elements.

— The Deep Vault : made by the Archive 81 team. Fast paced true horror.

— The Oyster : this one I was apprehensive about & it was just… great. Cerebral, thought provoking, *moving*, psychologically-terrifying sci-fi. You will laugh & likely cry & feel your stomach fill with butterflies & it leaves a definite impression that lasts for days…

— Tracks (BBC) There are 5 different seasons - each could be listened to in isolation as they all have their own individual mysteries that are solved. All weird sci-fi, psychological thriller fiction

—Steal the Stars (renamed STORIES FROM THE STARS) : a shortened version (and obviously far more streamlined in storyline, production etc) of Archive 81 but here the writing shines, the pacing is absolute perfection - and then it’s like a roller coaster that I didn’t see coming - that ending I was so, so unprepared for 🤯🫢🤐

— Marvel’s Wolverine: The Long Night (can be found under the feed “Marvel’s Wolverine: The Lost Trail” - which is the 2nd season of the series) : I am not into the DC/Marvel universe. The last super-hero movie I saw was the 1990’s Batman movies 😳. I knew literally *nothing* about Wolverine, the character, when I finally caved into trying this…and boy, am I glad I did. This AD serves as yet another reminder of how holding onto preconceived notions only limits one’s potential for enjoyment. Anyway… this is absolutely not for children, & not an origin story (which is what I had been expecting). I was shocked to hear that the titular character (the term “Wolverine” is never used. It took a bit of googling for me to see that the missing “Logan” = Wolverine) is played by none other than Richard Armitage (who I know most recently from his spine-tingling portrayal of Rassilon in the Gallifrey Time War boxsets) and oddly enough, said-titular-character has very, very few lines/appearances in this story. I could go on, & on, & on trying to sell the idea of what this thing is & why it deserves your time - but it’s easy enough to just Google..

— St. Mary’s School for Children with the Stigmata

— The Grove : short serialized mythological horror story (obviously full cast)

—The Secret of St. Kilda : this is more of a drama with some supernatural/mythical elements

—Give Me Away : I was torn whether to put this one in the comedy or serious section because it’s more of a “dramedy ”. And it’s scary because of what it says about society but not traditional horror. It’s also by the team who did *Steal the Stars*

—Paragon : an hour-length sci-fi/horror audio drama and is part of the PRIMORDIAL DEEP feed

The camp counselor is a teenager technically, but I think people forgetting the context behind the word ‘teenager’  

Honestly just throw this post into the ether 

I'm 85 years to late but just hang on a minute I had the most lukewarm epiphany  

I know no one's talking about it anymore, but I think everyone's too busy talking about how bad it is and not why it looks like it's bad. I've seen post being like” um that a child” and other being like “no he's an adult”

I think understanding why everyone is having this problem is more important than just saying the problem is a problem

Everyone's like omg there's a bat in in my room and not why is there a bat in my room or how did the bat get in my room in the first place  

It just seems like people are yelling at each other without seeing why the other person is yelling to begin with.

this "drama" in a nutshell

I think the disconnect between calling the Camp counselor in “Happy Campers” a teenager then Viv calling him an adult is a word context problem.  

In the states or at least where I grew up  

Once you’re 18 or 19 no calls you a teenager anymore and I think that’s what tripping people up. When you're 18 or 19 you are an adult, you're not a kid anymore. When someone says teenager, you think 16-, 15-, or 14-year-olds first. Someone still in high school, most 18/19-year-olds are in college or just finishing high school and are full legal adults.  

And I think that’s problem  

Barbie says, “do you know how easy teenage humans are to manipulate?” When someone says teenager, you don’t think of an 18-year-old. You think of a child. If she said young adult sure the joke wouldn’t have landed as hard or got a big reaction, but it would less yikes worthy you know?  

And he doesn’t really look like an adult, at least to me. I think he looks older than the other kids, but they look like middle schoolers so assuming he's just some kid in high school makes since to me and I can see why people are very uncomfortable. If they made him look similar to the lifeguard or maybe if we saw other camp counselors that would have been better. Also, I think his voice sounds too young, he sounds like the typical nerd that gets bullied by the jock in those cheesy high school films. If he sounded like an awkward young adult, I think this would be better. But that’s also a matter of opinion on what you personally think sounds like a young adult.  

 In fact, in when I was in 11th grade, I had math with a kid who looked like this so :/  

I know Viv said he's an adult  

But if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck it's safe to say it’s a duck  

So, if it looks like a teenager and talks like a teenager....  

I understand both sides I honestly do  

he's an adult yes  

but in the most literal sense of the word “teenager” that’s still correct  

Basically, it's like in math class when the teacher asks you to answer a question like “what 2 plus 2” then you say 4 and they're like 4 what? 4 apples? 4 children? 4 missing body parts?  

Same thing different context  

It's like saying chips or French fries to someone from the USA or Britan. 

It's the same food but context matters 

Or saying pastry as a catch all for all desserts but the both are true but the context matters  

When you think pastry you think tarts, Danishes, or eclairs  

But  

If someone said dessert you'd think about cake, cookies, or pies  

Both are technically correct but when talking about a sweet dish but normally you'd just say one name for one and other for the rest  

Kinda like how beignets are donuts but no calls them donuts

I mean if you asked someone for a pastry like a snooty asshole and someone handed you a pie you would be very confused is all I'm saying

 

The reason it looks like Viv is trying to cover her ass and trying to using the “1000-year-old god” thing weebs use to undermined or justify Loli. She’s right he's an adult but also a teenager  

its giving square can be a rectangle, but rectangle will never be a square

Keralis and xB were in trouble. Big trouble. So, okay, maybe, just maybe, they had been hanging out around spawn last night, and maybe they had caught sight of that ridiculously large statue of King Ren, and maybe they’d put a huge black mustache on it. Maybe.

“To be fair, it is very funny looking.” xB said, voice a little high from laughing. They’d forgotten all about the statue until they’d walked outside Keralis’ house the following morning.

“Oh, Princess, how you enable me so! That’s my logging partner! All of the drama of Ren the Dog will come down on us!” Keralis wiped his eyes with his sleeve, trying not to start giggling again.

“Forget logging partners, he’s literally the king!” xB sighed, leaning against Keralis for support. “We’re gonna get thrown in the stockade for this!”

“HEY! What are you two laughing about, huh?” Bdubs suddenly hurtled out of the air and crash landed in front of the two. He scrambled to his feet and pointed an accusatory finger at them, a wild look in his eyes.

“Oh Bubbles! Aren’t you looking wonderful this morning!” Keralis sighed, holding out his hands to behold the angry little man.

“Yeah, can’t two bros just enjoy a little giggle outside?” xB asked, trying to control his smile.

“NOT WHEN THE KING’S STATUE HAS BEEN DEFILED!” Bdubs shouted, pointing at Ren’s statue. “Someone, or some people, have put a mustache on the face of the king’s statue, and that is a crime! And you two just happen to be conveniently standing nearby and laughing in its general direction!” Bdubs puffed out his chest and glared at them.

“That doesn’t mean it was us!” xB argued back. “Maybe we just saw it when we walked out here this morning and that’s why we’re laughing!”

“We love our wonderful sweet Ren!” Keralis told Bdubs, hand to his heart. “Why would we do such a thing? You think we are criminals, Bubbles? I cry!”

“Don’t try to gaslight me! I have the footage from the security cameras of you two idiots climbing up the statue last night!” Bdubs pulled out a thumb drive and thrust it at them, triumphant. Keralis and xB went silent, looking at the flash drive, then each other, grimacing. “AHA! You two thought you committed the perfect crime! But I have outsmarted you, and the king will learn of your disobedience!”

“Well now, I don’t know about all of that.” xB hummed, elbowing Keralis.

“What, here, now?” Keralis whispered back.

“Do you feel like getting in trouble?” xB asked with a shrug.

“What kind of stupid scheme are you two trying now! You’ve been caught!” Bdubs reached for his communicator, maybe to contact the king.

“Oh, I suppose.” Keralis sighed. “Hey hey hey Bubbles! Look into my eyes, nothing but my eyes.” Keralis smiled warmly, putting a hand on Bdubs’ shoulder.

“Into your eyes?” Bdubs asked, looking at Keralis with confusion.

“Yeah man, if I were you I’d look into his eyes, nothing but. Hehe I said butt!” xB giggled a little too long considering the joke but it didn’t matter. Bdubs had looked into Keralis’ wide eyes, and had gone still, mouth open slightly.

“Right, Bubbles.” Keralis spoke strongly, with an echo in his voice that would have sounded strange if xB hadn’t heard it many times before. “You are listening well, aren’t you?”

“Yes.” Bdubs’ voice was airy, but flat. His eyes were unfocused.

“Good, good. Now… Princess, what do we want him to do exactly?” Keralis asked, not taking his eyes away from Bdubs for a second.

“Hmm…” xB considered this. “Have him throw away the flash drive and blame the mustache on himself. Kinda funny.”

“Oh Princess, how mean!” Keralis said. “Okay, Bubbles, do this for us, hmm? I want you to throw the flashdrive right into the hermitsippi, okay? And then you will go and take down the mustache on our lovely king’s face. If you do get caught, you will not know who did it, and you will never pursue the criminals. And you will not remember this conversation. Understand, sweet face?”

“Yes.”

“Good, good.” Keralis practically purred, and then he broke eye contact, looking to xB with a wink, and then caught Bdubs as he crumpled to the ground.

“Sweet face! What happened?” Keralis asked in concern. xB kneeled next to them, watching the blue light of possession magic wink out of Keralis’ eyes.

“Yeah man, you just kind of came over here babbling about statues and then fell to the ground.” xB helped Bdubs to his feet.

“Weird…” Bdubs muttered. “Well, I better be on my way. Good morning to you boys!” He went to take off, but hesitated. Keralis and xB watched him stand at the edge of Keralis’ pier, reach in his pocket, pull out the flash drive, frown at in in confusion, and throw it into the water. Keralis and xB breathed a sigh of relief as he flew off towards Ren’s statue.

“Good ol’ Keralis mind control.” xB sighed, patting Keralis on the back. “My hero.”

“And it still doesn’t effect you, does it, Princess?” Keralis asked, turning to look xB in the eye. xB looked back at him with a smile, feeling the power of mind control washing over him, doing nothing.

“Nope.”

“Alas.” Keralis chuckled. “Well, the real question is, what do we do to defile the king’s statue next?” He offered xB his arm.

“Already way ahead of you.” xB said, taking the proffered arm and walking with Keralis. “I’m thinking a dumptruck of an ass on the statue. And booty shorts instead of jeans.”

They both burst into laughter. Again. It was all just too funny. Yeah they’d just mind-controlled an innocent man. But it was still just all very funny.

Sitting in the middle of Miss Jenn’s drama club room on the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series set last year, the walls were vibrating with the sound of “Now or Never” from High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

As the cast sang about giving their all one last time before the clock ran out, the song signaled what's to come as months later, Disney+ confirmed the hit series is coming to an end with season 4. 

Like the third High School Musical film the East High students are putting on, this season marks the end of an era. 

“In the streaming era, there's something real about the phrase ‘It's now or never,’” creator Tim Federle told PEOPLE during a set visit in December. “You never know if you're going to get another season. And so to have been lucky enough to have helped launch Disney+ alongside The Mandalorian and still be on the air after four seasons is a blessing alone.”

Not only did the show help launch Disney’s new streaming platform when it premiered in November 2019, but it quickly launched its cast into superstardom. 

For Federle, there was never a doubt in his mind they would achieve anything other than that. “What I promised Disney was that if they let me hire real theater kids, they wouldn't let me down,” he said getting a little choked up. “I'm so proud of them because when the world beats them up, they still show up for me and for each other. Life is short, but when you make a TV show, hopefully, it lasts forever.” 

Though the curtain is closing on the East High students, it’s clear the bond they forged over the past few years will stay intact. 

“It's a uniquely musical theater experience that no matter how short or long the time is, you become a family,” Joshua Bassett (Ricky) said. “I'm going to know these people for the rest of my life and some of them will probably be in my wedding.” 

Sofia Wylie (Gina) echoed that same sentiment, calling her costars “the best people I've ever met.”

"I have learned so much from everybody,” she added. “The joy that Dara [Reneé] brings every day, the professionalism that Julia [Lester] brings, the humor that Frankie [A. Rodriguez] has, the angel glow that Joe [Serafini] has, Saylor [Bell Curda] is my favorite human being. And of course, Josh [Bassett] brings such a wonderful leadership that I think really has affected the show in such a positive way every single day.” 

“It's really wonderful,” she continued. “I already feel nostalgic even though we haven't ended the show yet, because I know I will look back at this experience and always remember it to be one of the best times of my life.”

Julia Lester (Ashlyn) noted that the series has been “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” not only because of the show’s unique structure but because of the cast’s incredible chemistry. “We've all been best friends since literally day one,” she said.  

“I just feel like we're so lucky because we're all so different that we just work,” Dara Reneé (Kourtney) added. “This cast is just so powerful and so kind and so humble, and just everything that you would dream to work with. I just love how safe I feel about all these beautiful, kind people.” 

As for what they hope the show’s legacy will be, the cast was in total agreement that they hope fans remember the importance of love and acceptance. 

“I hope the show's legacy is what we have been saying over the last four years, which is 'born to be brave,'” Frankie A. Rodriguez (Carlos) said, referencing the season 1 song of the same name.

“Just putting yourself out there and just not really caring what other people think," he continued. "Finding your community of people that are going to just love and support you and give you nothing but encouragement.” 

Bassett added that being on the show has really “set the standard” for him and his costars as it marked many of their first starring roles. “Once you have an experience like this, you don't settle for anything else anywhere else,” he said.

“We're going to carry this with us in all of our careers. I hope it's not a unique environment. I hope we continue to bring that, but from what I've heard there, there's nothing quite like it.”

Well hello, thank you for my first tumblr ask of all time. 😅 Congrats on tracking this blog down, and I'm glad you liked the video.

First of all, read Luke, Jared and Snow's blogs. Just read whatever strikes your fancy (https://lukegearing.blot.im/, https://jared.blot.im, nerves.games). Snow's most recent post is actually a reading list, I livestreamed a bunch of Luke's posts, and Jared is Jared. If Jared's ideas and opinions sound declarative, that's his voice. I think he dislikes half-committing to ideas, or couching his thoughts, and he has big opinions, so they can come off uh... standoffish? Unfriendly? But he's a big softie, I love him.

For proper philosophy, read Against Procedurality by Miguel Sicart (blog post: https://gamestudies.org/1103/articles/sicart_ap), and his book "Play Matters." His ideas on appropriation and playfulness have literally changed the way I move about the world in my day-to-day. Not every chapter is a banger, but it's good. The Forms and Fluidity of Play by Thi Nguyen is also great (https://gamephilosophy.org/pcg2014/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/C.-Thi-Nguyen-2014.-The-Forms-and-Fluidity-of-Game-Play-PCG2014.pdf), as is Cybertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature, even if it was written in the 90's. It's very readable, which is important, but also full of excellent ideas.

I'd also recommend um... just reading a lot of adventures. There's a lot of bad ones, but I trust you to form opinions! I'm currently reading Luke Gearing's Wolves Upon The Coast and loving it for different reasons than I loved his adventure The Isle. I'm a big fan of Mothership's instant classics Dead Planet and Pound of Flesh, and I hear the Warden's Manual in the upcoming Mothership boxed set will have some good practical advice. Dread Manse by Micah Anderson was a recent read I liked a lot. I also love/hate/love Orbital Intelligence, but buyer beware: it's a weird as fuck bibliography. XD Dip a toe in as a treat, and treat all of them (including Crapland) at least a little bit seriously.

Also go watch my Zedeck Siew video and pick up a copy of whatever you think sounds coolest. Spy in the House of Eth is a good start, alongside Lorn Song of the Bachelor and of course Reach of the Roach God (which I haven't read yet, but is available at spearwitch.com). This one's a bit sad because of some recent drama, but the books are still good. Oh, and go listen to the Adventure Tourism podcast, and if my episode on Deep Carbon Observatory sounds cool, go read the original (NOT THE REMASTER).

I will say: Don't read any rulebooks for context. Vanilla Game is alright, but people (including me) have said some really Forge-y stuff about Mothership's mechanisms, DCC is huge and its spells aren't especially fun to read, Best Left Buried is... like, I don't want to say anything bad about it because I was (under)paid to edit it, but ehh.

I say that because a lot of those adventures are for """"OSR"""" games, which people say are inherently high-lethality. This is almost always parroted and twisted to be More Forge Bullshit. The rules don't matter. Most of them are D&D clones in lipstick. I recommended adventures (not rulesets) because they're easily appropriated. Just ask how you would use any piece of them at your table, or how you would change them to fit you or your table. It's a good way to play! It's an inherent part of play. I've said it a million times, but my Mothership home game is 2% Alien, 98% Cowboy Bebop, because fuck the rulebook. I don't like the stress and panic rules anymore. Sorry, Sean!

lemme tell you about the new football anime please

It’s called Blue Lock and it’s my brand of absolute shitshow;

TLDR: the soccer anime is a shitty gay as fuck battle royale and your op here LOVES it.

First thing I want to make clear is that sports anime is a very vague definition because people who create these stories will literally just fucking do anything. Love it. You got your serious sports drama that inspire you to become better, like your KazeTsuyos and your Haikyuus. You got the fujobait/yuribait bullshit that’s just kinda themed around sports so it has a plot to follow along (Free!, Sk8 the infinity, that one about the golf girls dressed in lingerie I think).

and of course, the biggest contendant of the sports genre: the anime bullshit. Prince of Tennis, Kuroko’s basketball and, most recently: Blue Lock. 

Blue Lock is a battle royale manga that uses football as a plot but it is impossible to make any statement on said plot because the manga is kinda silly and is constantly contradicting itself but that’s not the point I want to make. This huge post is not a criticism, but mostly about me sharing my new favorite cringe. 

The art is stellar, I’m an absolute sucker for good dyanamic art in manga and BL (will purposely use this abbreviation that always makes me cackle) has so much power to its art, actually! Nomura Yusuke-sensei, the responsible for art and character designs, is very very good at his job!

Anyways, when I started reading this thing the battle royale and the “anti-sports anime” aspect were the things that got me thinking I should keep going and, let me tell you, this thing does not go where you expect it to go and I will spoil you a little bit on very later plot details on this story, so just skim with your little eyes closed in case you...really don’t want spoilers for  BL anime

I realize this post will not sound coherent at all, I’m mostly spitting out thoughts about a manga that I, admitely, have not thought about that much.

Yes, they have bullshit powers in this thing. They have SPECIAL MOVE NAMES they have JOJO STANDS they have ELDRITCH FOOTBALLIC ABOMINATIONS. 

and it’s EDGY, good lords it gives the 13 year boy who watched too much anime vibes. I dig that cringe so hard.

several of my prev psychologists link it to general anxiety and social awkwardness and yeah, that sounds reasonable, but what bothers me is that idk how to improve

i tend to overthink everything I say to the point where, even though I know what a normal response should look like I can't convince myself that what I said/wrote is articulated in a way that doesn't sound dumb/conveys literally the opposite of what I'm trying to deliver. answering a message after days of silence, which actively worsens my relationships, while I fear that answering with a 'stupid' message would be even worse or agonising over a comment I'm trying to leave on someone's work because, well, I think it's neat and cool and I want the artist/author to know it, but when I start typing my words look wrong and not genuine is a constant thing and I'm tired

and yeah, the worst is comforting people. my friend feels terrible, I can clearly see that and my heart is breaking for them, but I can never find a good thing th say. irl you at least can physically be there((maybe)) but online it's a nightmare

yeah this is exactly what i'm talking about... like i have no problem picking up on things between the lines... but i always take too long to respond and by the time i think of something i am either too nervous or the window has passed. in my case, I know its because i have a "slower processing speed" than other people, which i've had since I was little, it's easier to think when i can type on a screen and be able to check if im making sense, but i don't do verbal stuff very well.

i've been in therapy as well, a long time ago, and i've been told i might be on the autism spectrum, and/or have add, but i'm pretty resistant to getting a formal diagnosis or even self diagnosing for some reason.

i think for me, and i don't know if this will help for you, i want to 1) get rid of the... mental block? filter? that my thoughts have to get through before I say something... because sometimes i come up with the thought, but don't say anything due to nerves. that'll help me get more thoughts out there and 2) get more practice with people... which is hard! i tried out both improv and drama club in high school because this is an issue i've been working on for a long time... it didn't really work, but i've learned that there are a lot of... scripts! that i can just use in a pinch. even if its just like, small talk and stuff, or if i don't have anything, i just turn the question on the other person and just listen!

i've been trying to make peace with the fact that i will probably never be as good of a talker as other people, but you and me brother we are probably just meant to be listeners... and nothing wrong with that... there IS stuff we can do to get better at talking, which i encourage. but don't get down out of reason for being quiet.

Ranked: Wizards of Waverly Place — Premieres

Well hello again!  It has been a hot minute since I did an Analysis, let alone a whole month of them!  Let’s change that.  Welcome to “Not What It Seems” November, something I completely made up so I could give myself a month to talk about my second-favorite Disney Channel show: Wizards of Waverly Place!  We’ll do like The Sound of Music and start at the very beginning (a very good place to start) and talk about Premieres(… starting on the 8th of the month instead of the 1st, because I am very punctual).

My criteria for general quality hasn’t changed too much: good acting, good directing, tight editing, tight script, humor and/or drama that hits where it’s supposed to. Nor has my criteria for what makes a Premiere, specifically, stand out as a Premiere and what takes it to the next level, so once more, here’s that list:

Establish the tone, setting, and premise for the season

Introduce an important change, shift, or moment in the series that sets the season apart and/or make it clear to the audience why we’re starting where we are

Establish and/or re-establish the characters and characterization— the characters should still feel like themselves, and shouldn’t act too differently from how they act in other episodes, but they should still feel like they’re developing throughout the show, particularly if that development is directly related to the Important Change mentioned above

Stand out from the season in a way that doesn’t feel jarring or out of place— it should feel like a part of its own season, while also setting itself apart in a positive and memorable way

Now, resentfully, I thought of adding some criteria for clarity, such as not retconning, not undermining the drama of previous episodes (especially Finales), or perhaps emphasize the positive part of “setting itself apart in a positive and memorable way”… but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that mostly just applies to one episode in particular, and it’s not worth altering the entire list just because one specific episode pisses me off enough to warrant a low ranking despite technically qualifying for a lot of these on paper.

So since I tend to list from Worst->Best so I can save the best for last, why don’t we start with that episode so you can see what I mean?

#4: “Alex Tells the World” (Season Four)

No, I don’t hate Season 4, and yes, this episode does a decent job of setting up the general conflict and story arc for it, and yes, like I said, this episode technically qualifies for a lot of the criteria I just mentioned.  There’s just one little problem: I. Don’t. Like. It.  And it’s my list, so I can rank it wherever I want. *long-suffering sigh* Let’s get into it.

The first part of this episode starts off strong enough: as a continuation of the S3 Finale, the Russos have finally returned home, after hitching rides, taking buses, and a whole lot of walking (or in Alex’s case, riding their werewolf boyfriend’s back.  Side note: why the hell didn’t he just wolf up instead of walking in human form?  It seems like that would’ve been a lot easier on him, but whatever, that’s the least of my problems with this episode).  The stakes are high: They’ve lost their powers, Justin exposed magic to the government, Professor Crumbs and several other wizards have been taken captive, and their Wizard Portal has shut down.  So what’s next?

As it turns out, a whole lot of nothing.  Literally. Their solution is “do nothing.” Business as usual.  There is no war in Ba Sing Se, we have always been at peace with Eurasia.  When Alex understandably goes, “Fuck that noise, there are people in danger, and something needs to be done,” they’re upset that the laziest girl on Earth wants to do something for once.  Granted, what she wants to do is expose magic to get the people to recognize that wizards are just like everyone else and help them stand up to the unfair government. People have a right to be skeptical of this plan, as there’s no guarantee the people will react the way she hopes they will, there’s no real way to prove her powers at this point because they’ve been taken away, thus no guarantee that they’ll even believe her and a high chance they’ll lock her in some kind of asylum, and of course, it’s been drilled into them over and over that exposing magic is a big no-no.  

But Alex insists it’s the only way.  Sure, it’s a huge risk, and it’s breaking protocol in all kinds of ways, but some things are more important than rules, and when lives are on the line, you have to prioritize helping others over protecting yourself, and you can’t just sit around and stay silent.  Right?  Right?

Please, this is the backwards wizard world we’re talking about!  The place where revolutionaries and new ideas literally go to die (yes, I’m still salty about Stevie).  So of course, this ends up being an absolute disaster and it all turns out to be everyone’s favorite trope: All Just a Dream!  Or, in this case, even more frustratingly, it’s all just a mirage manufactured by Professor Crumbs to test their commitment to secrecy.  That’s the ethos here, folks.  Snitches get stitches, no exceptions.  That’s it.  Hell, we don’t even get the excuse of the mortals reacting negatively and agreeing with the government that wizards need to be subjugated, we don’t get anything, because he generates that little swirl thing before we can see how they might have reacted.

(Also, there was literal thunder accompanying his reveal, are y’all trying to convince me this man is not a supervillain?  Come on.)

While I did appreciate Justin getting called out for hypocritically criticizing Alex for something he did as well (and first!), and his little back-and-forth before he duplicates himself, the fact that he throws himself under the bus immediately in the name of “truth and justice” is bullshit.  Truth, I’ll grant you.  Justin is often honest to a fault, and lawful to a fault too, so him throwing himself under the bus makes sense, but let’s not call it what it isn’t.  There was nothing “just” about any of this.  Case in point, Alex tells the court that the government facility didn’t exist, because it didn’t, because CRUMBS invented it, BECAUSE HE TOLD HER SO HIMSELF, only to get “proven wrong” by the crystal ball of Totally Not Biased Framing because are you kidding me.  How exactly would that conversation have gone if she’d answered yes?  He probably would have done the same thing!

“So you just… made all of that up.  Who does that?”

“The boss-man does.”

The trial, much like the “test,” was not about flaws in their character, it was exposing a flawed system, and a flawed man.  Justin and Alex didn’t just expose magic for no reason, Justin was tricked by a fake recording into believing aliens were attacking Earth, and Alex was tricked by a fake everything into believing this show had actual stakes and integrity that wizards were being held captive.  How is this anything but a show of force and a display of power, a reminder that they have no real control over their own destinies or anyone else’s?  They never had a chance, this wasn’t about giving them a shot to prove their innocence or their commitment to the wizard world.  This was about telling them that Crumbs can do whatever the fuck he wants to fuck with them, for any reason, make it look like it’s their fault, somehow actually convince them that it is, and there is fuck-all they can do about it.  The wizarding world is a goddamn dystopia, that’s the lesson here, fight me.

I will amend that having Max come out in front and putting Alex and Justin back to Level 1 is certainly an interesting plotline and they set up the rest of the season pretty decently.  I’ll also admit that Harper is iconic from start to finish and Mason is haplessly adorable, if not exactly very helpful.  This episode isn’t all bad, but it took something that was so much cooler and more interesting, the idea of having to save wizards from the government and possibly live in a world that knew the truth about magic, and made it into something frighteningly authoritarian instead. 

While the other episodes on this list are far lower stakes and may tick less “Premiere” boxes, none of them are guilty of being this utterly disrespectful of its audience, or of flagrantly prioritizing plot over logic to this insane of a degree, so right before I launch into those, I would like to say a hearty FUCK YOU to this episode and to so many things about it.

(I promise the rest of this list will be a lot less ranty, I just had to get that out of the way.)

#3: “Franken Girl” (Season Three)

This episode is a lot like how I imagine Max’s room: messy, but in a fun way.  This episode’s fun!  And considering a lot of it revolves around a girl laughing and clapping her hands in a deep voice bumbling around, it’s actually a bit more clever than even I initially gave it credit for before rewatching it recently.

It starts off with one of the most underrated and underutilized dynamics on the show: Alex and Max teaming up for typical sibling mischief, watching a 3-D movie they stole out of Justin’s room together.  (*nostalgic sigh* I remember when 3-D glasses were blue and red…)  Then, of course, we get into the real plot focus: Justin scheming to punish Alex and keep her from stealing his stuff, and Alex scheming to ruin his plans for her own amusement.  While they’re against each other for pretty much the whole episode, it’s in a fun, sibling-fighting, “I family-hate you” sort of way, rather than out of any real malice (which… unfortunately does become more of a Thing this season, but not here, so I won’t dwell on it just yet).

What strikes me about this episode is not that Justin comes out on top, but how he does it, and he does it in two key ways.  The first is a sort of “ironic punishment”:  You want to steal things out of my room?  Fine.  Here’s my Franken-Girl.  She’s all yours.  But when that backfires and Alex starts to enjoy her newfound friendship, he comes up with a backup plan to force them to be cheerleaders together.  And just as a side note, I love the reveal of Harper being a cheerleader, how she was able to keep it secret from Alex, and that she threw the “wizard” secret back in her face when Alex got mad at her for not telling her.  Being a cheerleader makes perfect sense for Harper’s character, yet is something Alex wouldn’t (and didn’t) expect from her (at least, not when it comes to school spirit… Alex is perfectly content to let Harper be her cheerleader, but that’s an analysis for another time).

But while the cheerleading thing seemingly appeared out of random when I watched it as a child, rewatching it I realized it’s actually set up pretty well.  Jerry and Theresa put Harper up to encouraging Alex to do extracurriculars so she can get into college, which gives Alex a reason to sneak into Justin’s room to lie and get past his “Alex-proofing,” and then the thing he used to “Alex-proof” his room is also what he uses to force her into the very extracurriculars the rest of the family wanted her to do in the first place.  

It works out so well for everyone that I almost wonder if, consciously or not, Justin was also using his revenge to look out for her in a way.  Even as he gleefully sits back and watches Alex’s humiliation, he’s also given his parents exactly what they wanted, brought her and Harper closer together, and even benefitted Alex’s resume for the future, though she’s too busy feeling all embarrassed to notice at the moment.  I would say this episode is Justin at his best: a little mischievous, a little uptight, hella intelligent, and ultimately doing good by his family.  I like him enough in this episode that I don’t even mind too much Theresa heaping the “perfect son” label on him… even if it’s pretty harsh that she does this with Max sitting right there at the time.

In terms of setting up the rest of the season, I would say the real setup doesn’t really come until “Monster Hunters,” but it’s not bad.  Both Frankie and the cheerleading thing do come up again in later episodes, so I can’t argue it doesn’t have impact.  It doesn’t have much impact, as both the other episode with Frankie and the other episode involving cheerleading pretty much do away with those things as soon as possible and are then never mentioned again, but I’m not really mad about that.  It might be worth arguing that in both this and “Three Monsters,” Frankie’s “personhood” isn’t given a lot of thought, but I’m not invested enough in her character to be truly troubled by it, so I can live with the mild discomfort there.  All in all, a half-decent Premiere and a pretty good episode.

#2: “Crazy 10-Minute Sale” (Season One)

Remember when we all thought Gigi was gonna be an important character?  Me too!  So they do that thing TV shows (especially Pilots) often do where they introduce a character by saying, “Remember?  The character that did this thing in the past that we the audience are just learning about for the first time?”  But it doesn’t stand out too much in my opinion, because she’s explaining this to Jerry, who isn’t interested in schoolgirl squabbles, and thus it makes sense that, as her parent who has different priorities, he might be a little oblivious to this.

Despite that, one of the things I love about this episode and about the early seasons in general is that Jerry’s actually pretty smart here, and competent when it comes to magic even though he doesn’t have it himself.  As its Pilot, this episode not only introduced the characters, but introduced the formula that defined the show initially: they learn a spell in class from Jerry, crack a few jokes and don’t appear to absorb the lesson, then end up using the spell later and setting the plot in motion, and eventually get discovered by Jerry and resolve the situation.  It’s a good formula, and while I don’t mind that they mixed it up in later seasons, it worked for a long time, and it works here.

There are other staples of Season 1 in particular that I enjoy revisiting in this: Justin being mischievous, laidback, and just as imperfect as the other siblings when it comes to learning magic; Gigi’s posse getting nose jobs to match hers; and of course, who could forget the Monotone Lady?  While I enjoy later-seasons Harper more as a character in general, I do enjoy sweet, naïve Harper here too, and the fact that she’s still cunning enough as Alex’s bestie to lie to Theresa and help her hide.  I don’t know how well it blends into the show as a whole, but that’s mostly because the show changes so much after Season 1 and becomes a lot of different things over time, and I still think it’s pretty seamless with the rest of the season it established.  It might blend in a little too well — as in, I forgot that this is the episode where the show started, because so many of the early episodes blend together in my head and don’t really stand out from each other — but it’s solid as an episode, if only barely scratching the surface of everything the show would become.

#1: “Smarty Pants” (Season Two)

Ah, Dean.  Speaking of “characters that were really important until they weren’t,” his introduction and presence very clearly marks this as a Season 2 Premiere in particular, and that’s exactly how it should be.  As mentioned above, the mark of a good Premiere is that it both establishes and feels like a part of its season, and this episode goes a long way to do both.  Dean’s introduction does a lot of things for Alex and the show: it gets her forgettable first-season Love Interest Riley out of the way, who barely cared about or noticed Alex, and replaces him with a G-rated “bad boy” who’s clearly into her, which later pays off in an arc about Alex experiencing her first real relationship, her first love, and her first breakup.

And Dean isn’t the only character introduced, we also have Zeke Beakerman helping Justin with the Quiz Bowl, and being hammily dorky alongside him as he gloats to Harper about his “victory.”  Technically, Dan Benson, the actor who played him, showed up in Season 1 twice, once as a draft character called Zack Rosenblatt, and once as an unnamed “Friend #1,” but this is the first time we get a proper introduction to the lovable nerd that would become Justin’s friend for the rest of the show (and ironically Harper’s boyfriend, which you’d never guess from this episode, although given Justin’s behavior here you might not also guess that Harper was still head-over-heels for him at this point either— bottom line, neither of them are at their most attractive or appealing here, but they are fun).

But the real mark of change comes from the re-establishment of a character we already know and love: Harper.  While she still wears her crazy fruit outfits, Harper wants to be known as more than the “food-for-clothes” girl around school, to rebrand herself, reboot herself if you will. There’s some meta-significance to Harper wanting to be known as smart in addition to… shall we say creative with fashion, and indeed, this is the season where Harper starts to grow into her own.  It’s not the episode where Harper learns the wizard secret, but it does establish a Harper who’s willing to talk back to Alex and who’s willing to assert herself, all of which go a long way in her development over the course of the show.

The fact that Alex is willing to embarrass herself, step back, and give Harper the reins to get back in her good graces also establishes the beginning of the show’s evening out of this dynamic.  While Harper is still ultimately the better and more selfless friend throughout the show, this marks the beginning of a sassy, savvy Harper who acts as Alex’s voice of reason, and soon enough won’t be kept in the dark, either.  Goodbye, naïve everygirl, hello confident, competent, and proper Foil to Alex’s shenanigans.

And that, my dear readers, is more than enough to start you off with.  I’ve certainly got more to say as we go further into this month, and further into analysis of this chaotic hot mess show that I love, but this will do for now.  Stay tuned for more Ranked posts and more Wizards of Waverly Place content on this blog in general, happy “Not What It Seems” November!

I know I said I was going to do a writeup about YA Twitter drama next, but then I remembered that this is a thing that happened and I just had to post it here. I swear to god, I am not making any of this up.

This is one of those incidents that’s difficult to summarize because I honestly don’t even know where to begin. There’s so much to talk about that it’s almost overwhelming—sockpuppeting, medical fraud, false identities, and god-knows-what else all played a part in making this drama one of the biggest scandals in Tumblr history (or, at least, the biggest scandal that doesn’t involve illegally mailing body parts to people via the United States Postal Service. Don’t even ask.) Now, you may be thinking that the title probably makes more sense in context, but I can assure you that it absolutely does not. It’s just as insane as it sounds at first glance. To make it abundantly clear how nuts this whole debacle was, I should probably start by detailing Hamilton and its obsessive fandom.

Hamilton is a Broadway musical that came out a few years ago, and unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard someone at least mention it in passing. It’s one of the most successful shows in recent history, and it’s beloved by tumblr.com for a variety of reasons. The main, though not sole, reason is that it’s actually really good (and I say this as someone who isn’t a crazy theatre kid.) It focuses on the life of Alexander Hamilton from his arrival in the Thirteen Colonies to his death during a duel with Aaron Burr, and it’s all done surprisingly well for a musical that attempts to tell a story about the American Revolutionary War via rap battles. It’s one of the few shows in the world that can get away with including stage directions like “ELIZA BEATBOXES MATERNALLY” and still be taken completely seriously by both fans and critics.

Reason number two why Tumblr loves Hamilton is the same reason Tumblr loves the MCU and Superwholock and all the other franchises it obsesses over. There are lots of male characters and thus lots of potential slash ships (ships meaning relationships.) If you’re wondering why on Earth anyone would want to ship the Founding Fathers with one another… well, join the club. I have no idea. But some fans really liked the idea of Alexander Hamilton and [insert literally any other character] hooking up, so Hamilton the musical spawned an abundance of fan fiction and fan art featuring the signatories of the US Constitution. Keep in mind, though, that by Tumblr standards, this is not that weird. A little unusual, sure, and certainly less common than traditional fictional character shipping, but nobody’s really going to start a riot because people want John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton to have sex. This is Tumblr we’re talking about. Remember how I mentioned people mailing human body parts to one another? In comparison to those incidents, shipping the Founding Fathers is not that strange, so the rabid Hamilton fans were mostly ignored by the rest of the site. And this allowed their community to grow quite large. Nobody wanted to be the one to poke at the hornet’s nest that was the rapidly developing hive of Hamilton-obsessed fans, so they all just kind of let It be. And, in the complete absence of outside scrutiny, that community grew and grew and grew. By 2015, the amount of people who dedicated countless hours to writing Hamilton fic was far greater than anyone could have imagined.

One of the many Hamilton fics floating around on Tumblr was a piece entitled “To Scale the Blue Sky,” which was an alternate universe fanfic set in a high school. Again, taking the Founding Fathers and putting them in an American high school in the 1980s a la Clone High may sound bizarre, but that’s such a common fan fiction trope that people didn’t even question it. There are probably more high school AUs on Tumblr than there are stars in the sky at this point. The unique thing about “To Scale the Blue Sky,” though, was that it addressed an important issue affecting the LGBT community in the ‘80s: HIV and AIDS. This is a story in which Alexander Hamilton, the guy who appears on the $10 bill, gets HIV while in high school. And, ordinarily, this type of writing would have rung at least a few alarm bells; after all, fan fiction is generally not the best way to address the AIDS epidemic and the deaths resulting from its mismanagement. But “To Scale The Blue Sky” was cut some slack, partially because of who its authors were.

The main author of “To Scale The Blue Sky” was Israa, a nonbinary Chinese-Pakistani victim of sex trafficking. The other, mostly uncredited author was Israa’s wife Raj, a Catholic-Somali lesbian of color. Both were HIV+, and they ran a popular blog about how the disease impacted their lives, which was entitled hivliving. They used hivliving as a platform for activism, but also a way to share their personal experiences with various forms of trauma and discuss how being HIV+ has impacted them. They also occasionally used it to promote their fanfiction.

Unfortunately, just as hivliving was reaching the height of its popularity, Raj and/or Israa suffered some terrible, debilitating medical issue that left them in need of expensive medical treatment right away. A cash.me link was posted, and thousands of followers who credited the couple for educating them about HIV and helping them through their own diagnoses jumped at the chance to donate. And everything went exactly as planned, up until fellow Tumblr user digoxin-purpurpea noticed something was up with the cash.me.

Digoxin-purpurpea was another Hamilton fan, and she also went by the names digitalis, candiru, and cardiotoxin (this is less suspicious than it sounds; most Tumblr fanfic writers use different usernames for different fan fiction sites.) Under the blog name Cardiotoxin, digoxin-purpurpea messaged Israa and Raj shortly after the cash.me was posted, saying that she had a difficult time believing they were truly living in India, because the cash.me indicated they were within the United States. One thing led to another, and long story short, the mod of hivliving wound up making a huge confession: she didn’t live in India, and she didn’t have HIV. Israa and Raj don’t exist. The real person behind the blog, and behind “To Scale The Blue Sky,” was an American college student, Alix. That may not be her real name, but I’ll refer to her as such for the purpose of this post.

This, predictably, caused an uproar. Alix later tried to backtrack by saying that Israa and Raj were digital personas based on real people, but it later came out that not even that was true. Their lives and backstories were entirely made up just so Alix had an excuse to write HIV+ High School AU fan fiction about Alexander Hamilton without being judged too harshly for it. By pretending to be a woman with HIV+, she could deflect any questions about whether writing this type of thing is really okay by claiming that it was a coping mechanism to deal with her own disease. She also made up the additional sympathetic pieces of Israa and Raj’s tragic backstories because they made people more likely to feel bad for the couple and support them financially. Finally, their Somalian, Chinese, and Pakistani heritage allowed Alix, a white girl, to be put on lists of POC writers that she never would have been able to get onto had she not lied about her identity. Basically, Alix made up two entire people and started a HIV support blog exclusively to promote “To Scale the Blue Sky” and works like it.

Naturally, when it came out to everyone that Alix was a liar and Israa and Raj weren’t real people, a lot of fans were very upset, especially those who had donated to their bullshit cash.me. They demanded their money back, and Alix agreed to refund them, but that never actually happened. Meanwhile, other people started digging up dirt on Digoxin-purpurpea, as some people were concerned that she’d also been making things up in order to get rid of hivliving and boost her own popularity. What they found was, arguably, even stranger than a plot to reduce her competition by scrubbing hivliving from the internet—Digoxin-purpurpea was a relatively well-known author of real-person supernatural fanfiction. No, not Supernatural TV show fanfiction—I mean stories about ghosts, mermaids, and other mythical creatures, having sex with each other and real people.

At around the time Alix started asking for donations while posing as Israa and Raj, Digoxin-purpurpea was being criticized for various bizarre works she’d written, among them things like ghost!Hamilton erotica and at least one work in which Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays Hamilton, is a cannibalistic mermaid. People quickly realized that Digoxin-purpurpea wasn’t dragging Alix for purely selfless reasons. Alix and her friends had made fun of Digoxin-purpurpea for her weird and “problematic” stories, so Digoxin-purpurpea exacted revenge by exposing Alix.

After this revelation, both Digoxin-purpurpea and Alix deleted the majority of their work, which was unsurprising, considering how much the rest of Tumblr was making fun of them. Hivliving shut down, which was to be expected, seeing as the people who ran the blog were actually one person who didn’t actually have HIV. And, finally, Tumblr learned a valuable lesson about donating to gofundmes and cash.mes without doing adequate research first. People continue to ask for money for various causes online, but Tumblr users are a lot more skeptical now, because you never know when that baby with cancer or that woman with cerebral palsy are actually just crazy Hamilton fans using medical conditions as an excuse to write stories about the Founding Fathers having unprotected sex in a high school.
