Your friend who thinks it's "cruel" to talk about it is insecure about being corrected and she wants to seem progressive at all times so it's predictable she doesn't want to touch on that either

I’ll let @wetheoriginals speak for herself if she wants to. But I have to say that she’s never come across to me as insecure, not when we’ve disagreed or otherwise.

As for the first part of your ask: every time that we go around about the Vogue quote + paraphrase—which was Zendaya saying that if she were romantically involved with any of her costars they’d have to deal with her dad and brothers, implying that the men in her family gatekeep her sexuality—I say (or imply at least) that I can’t stand the idea of men, including male family members, “protecting” daughters, sisters, wives, girlfriends, etc. from other men. I don’t care for any kind of chivalry, really. (I do like non-gendered politeness, however!)

One of the last few times we went around about the Vogue excerpt, a few Black anons wrote in to share that the long history of violence and oppression against Black women, during which they were/sometimes still are left completely vulnerable, lives on in the ways in which some in the Black community conceive of men protecting women—as necessary for survival. I admit it’s still really hard for me to unsee chivalry as “a benevolent sexism that complements hostile sexism,” but I can entertain that my pov is a function of my own identity as a white middleclass woman.

One of the many differences between Tom and Zendaya is that Tom is always talking with great reverence and in detail about his dad’s impact on him, and his dad is literally at this very moment and to some of my followers no doubt selling info about Tom for money. Zendaya hasn’t said much specifically about her dad in a number of years, which is one reason that I bring up that little quote from Vogue every time Kaz comes up.

If I have anything to say about Kaz’s impact on Zendaya, then, it’s around this idea of protection. Kaz and Claire brought her into situations (Hollywood/Disney) that then required him/them to protect her an extra amount, and that’s a kind of control, which becomes ickier when you consider how both have tried to profit off of her success. Even if Zendaya has internalized cultural trauma around being a Black woman, and I do believe that’s possible, the specific dynamic of a dad bringing his minor daughter into an adult world raised the stakes around his protection. What’s more, in some ways Kaz let her down. Every time that “read your contract” and Zendaya’s music career come up I think, well, wasn’t it actually Kaz’s job as manager and father of a minor to read that contract? What exactly happened there?

But I’m not sure how that shows up in Zendaya’s life now because she doesn’t let us see too much. Her choosing Tom—a fairly chivalric boyfriend—is maybe the best indicator that she still thinks she needs or maybe she desires protection from men? 🤷🏻‍♀️

But again, Zendaya isn’t regularly talking about Kaz’s great impact on her and all his words of wisdom that she lives by. Additionally, whatever impact he’s had on her has been colored by whatever sort of falling out they’ve had. She’s probably examined their relationship now that she’s got some distance from it.

For that reason, Zendaya’s relationship with her mom is maybe more interesting?

Tom and Zendaya are definitely engaged, she just doesn't show the ring. Or she shows it in plain site, yet the public doesn't realize it. I mean she stated she bought it for herself. And they knew journalist would check. You have to cover all bases and come up with a story to keep them at bay. Of course, manipulating the truth is par for the course. Too many eyes on them, and they want to protect what belongs to them. I definitely get that.

I consider this a safe space so this is an embarrassing confession I want to get off my chest: these past few weeks i notice a lot of my favorite TZ blogs kind of getting over them and getting on with their lives and it makes me feel weirdly bad about myself because I'm definitely not there yet. I'm chronically ill so there's not much to my social life apart from like my best friend and this has been such a nice escapism bubble this winter and spring. This obviously is a me problem and I wish all of you happiness in your real lives and other fandoms obviously and i hope this didn't weird you out

don’t worry, I’ve been there, while i was still struggling a lot more with my mental health and was only at home all day I felt the same but tbh I wouldn’t worry too much, I know for myself I might not be as hyper-invested anymore but I’ll be here with the rest of y’all to scream and cry when we get the next unhinged content

honestly, my advice would be find something that makes you happy outside of tomdaya, like for me that’s books so whenever we are in a drought like this I’ll get super into reading and buying books again which is also great distraction from my every day issues, or sometimes I’ll get super into skin care and yoga again, like find another thing that gives you that serotonin rush you know

and thank you for sharing, I get being hyperfocused and not getting over it in the same time as other people and feeling weird about it, the self-awareness really is crucial when you’re dealing with obsessive behavior 💚

You don’t have to post or anything but the posts you posted/deleted on Sunday after Taylor’s aoty win as well as some you’ve reblogged were in bad taste. I hope you understand that people have valid criticism of Taylor both in the results of the Grammys as well the capitalistic side effects of her lifestyle. Not saying you don’t have the right to love her and her music! But you acted dismissive of others, especially women of color, who voiced their valid critiques of the woman’s wins and actions. You writing their opinion off as just being “haters”  was wrong. Your words came across petty and distasteful. I hope you understand the inherit bias the media/industry has for Taylor versus her contemporaries. Some of us are tired of seeing only her be rewarded for things many others (especially other women/woc) have tirelessly worked on and accomplished. This corner of tumblr has so many diverse voices and your posts (to me) wrote their perspective/commentary off completely. Frankly that just seems mean to me. 

If Taylor fans can’t handle any valid criticism of her then it may be time to reflect on your relationship to her. These past few days have been so jarring on here! If you can’t take a step back and acknowledge that you’ve completely disregarded valid critique of that woman you’re going to continue to lose connections/followers on here by writing others voices off. I used to follow a much smaller onscreen pairing, Grant and Candice from The Flash, and at the time really wanted them to get together because of their onscreen chemistry. At the time, I used to follow a blog that quite literally resembles what Ashley is to TZ. When Grant started dating, it was literally “she’s just using him” and “it’s pr”. It was less about Grant and/or Candice, but very much focused on hating Grant’s partner. And I’m embarrassed to admit it but at the time i was on the anti bandwagon. I remember thinking, “there HAS to be a reason” because what was actually happening in reality didn’t fit the narrative I made up in my head. But when Grant announced his engagement, it finally clicked to me that I was being an anti. Fast forward a few years later, Grant now happy with a wife and child… I looked up that anti blog from years ago, and they are still active! Still full on believing its fake/pr. Still lost in their delusional theories. Still hating on Grant’s wife. It is literally like your pinned post for TZ. My long ask is to say, some antis will just remain like that forever and there is nothing you can say to or show them that will change their minds. It’s just not worth energy to try to level sense into them.

I find it interesting that all my fave tz blogs are talking about tom, and not about ourselves and our own mental health and sm use. that was, like, the whole point.

That was what Tom wanted us to talk about? So what? Maybe that’s not what we felt like talking about?

Anyhow, I did talk about myself a bit in one of my first answers on the topic from last night—

I think my own social media use is pretty healthy, actually. I’m a reflective person and enjoy being here on tumblr as a form of escapism and as a low-stakes opportunity to discuss pop culture with Tomdaya as a touchstone. I also have a personal IG account that is private for just my family, friends, and acquaintances (I have been moving away from posting a lot there because representing my life that way sometimes feels…debasing?), and i have two Twitter accounts, one that is pop culture centric (I just lurk and only once every few days), and one that is focused on national and local (DC) politics, including education politics and policy (I check in daily and sometimes tweet). I end up enjoying the pop-culture focused accounts more, including this tumblr, because the stakes are so low and I don’t experience stress at all here. The others I find myself visiting out of obligation to stay connected and informed with “real life,” where all the stakes and stresses are so much higher.

So I’ve got it figured out for myself, mostly. I didn’t read Tom’s message as a wake-up call or anything like that, so it didn’t inspire me to look within. I see him struggling with the competing pulls of authenticity and celebrity, which I don’t take personally at all, but which interest me on a more abstract level. Again, I’m not here for intense self-reflection. I get that elsewhere.

Confession:

I check N's account every now and then. My parasocial self thinks she still have something for Tom. She often post stories whenever T or Z go viral. Few things I remember:

1. Her posting being at Soho House (I think in London) in 2023 when Tom celebrated his birthday in Soho House (US) with his family and Z.

2. Her posting on Sept 1 or 2 2022 (depending on the timezone) and captioned it Good old goods. Well what I see on the post is she wants to show that she's out and happy (nothing wrong about that but girl, why sept 2 of all dates?)

3. When Tom went viral because of fixing his girl's door, N posted a story about his current boyfriend being a handy man or something to that effect (well I admit I may be overthinking this one and my understanding of British humor could be wrong)

4. Shared a story about attending Dorian Gray opening night which happened the same day as Dune 2 premiere in London (and TZ went viral that day as expected)

I'm just going to be honest here since that's what I usually am on my blog lol. I'll give you my honest opinion. 😅

I'll first be honest and admit that I really haven't paid much attention to N (if at all) since 2021 lol.

Once it became apparent that Tom dumped her to get back with Z, and he and Z were starting a relationship back up again, I really didn't see the need to follow whatever N was doing tbh.

I mean, maybe you might be on to smthg? But my honest feeling is that you might just be reading a little too much into innocuous things. Just because N posts on the same day as smthg going on with TZ doesn't automatically mean she's not over Tom or over a breakup.

She and Tom barely dated each other... 👀 It's not like they dated each other for years upon years, or even went out on dates like a regular couple (most of their time together was spent indoors during the Covid-19 shutdown).

Honestly? It's 2024. If she were still pining after a guy that dumped her almost 4 years ago back in 2020, I'd say that it's time for her to go to therapy and figure out what's going on there, coz that's not normal. 👀😬

With that said, I personally doubt N is still holding a torch for Tom. It was pretty obvious when she was throwing shade re: their breakup, but after 2021, I haven't seen her behaving in that manner. I also kind of get the feeling that she made peace with the whole thing long time ago.

Sometimes, I think fans forget that Tom was actually her rebound from Stanley. Tom himself was also still rebounding (imo) when he dated N. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I really don't think it was as serious as some fans made the thing out to be tbh.

Last I checked, N seems perfectly happy with her new beau. ☺️

So, one of my big projects is a sci-fi/fantasy anthology called "Moonlit Path." I have a few stories available on Wattpad and I have a bit of information about it on my other side-blog.

One of the species in this world are the Delphteans. They're a race of amphibious fish people that are recovering from nearly being wiped out. They're bouncing back and as a Kingdom are fairly wealthy due to having exclusive access to deep sea pearls, special sea salts, etc. However, they tend to be reckless to a fault.

Which is perfect Big Shot grounds for Spamton. Seriously, he'd make it big there because not many Delphteans care about malware and they love to shop.

But first, lemme talk about themes:

As a species, they all look very similar since they're for intents and purposes clones. They individualize through choices and environmental effects. They also put great importance on developing their skills since their society lacks experts. While their oldest are over 250 years old, their average lifespan is in their mid-20's due to their recklessness and rapid self-replication.

So (using tech left over from prior to the near-extinction event and a little bit of inherent ability known as Flow), the Delphteans save the skills of specific individuals and force it into vat grown clones to build on the skills. That way, they can have rapid deployment of fully trained doctors, computer experts, etc. to replace any that die. Those professions also frequently upload their skills to keep the database up-to-date.

This means, a huge percentage of the population are born as babies and blank slates. A much smaller percentage are essentially born as fully-fledged and educated adults with jobs that they were literally built to do.

So yeah, some Delphteans are pre-determined into their roles, whether they like it or not.

Enter TZ:

TZ is the last computer expert due to problems in the skills database and the memory merging process. However, he no longer officially works for the Kingdom due to self-exile due to failing to disable a highly complex security system while his friends were breaking into a warehouse. (This has also left him with a phobia for robots). He also has anxiety-driven pica with little regard of what it is he's eating. Comms devices, paintbrushes, his tie, napkins, coffee mugs, light bulbs, he's eaten nearly everything.

While he's insanely skilled with computers, his dream is to be the holonet's favourite stuntman.

In nearly every other interaction, he's super sweet and fearless. One of his boyfriends is infected with eldritch powers and the other is big and kind of a jerk and TZ has 0 nerves, just pure curiosity and acceptance.

However, he couldn't like Spamton, even if he wanted to. 1. Spamton kinda looks like a robot

2. He'd very quickly realize that Spamton's basically malware.

TZ doesn't have a hurtful bone in his body, but he'd be very concerned that everyone else likes Spamton. Also, Spamton would have the unique ability that if he ever snuck up on TZ, TZ would get spooked and hiss at him.

Usually Moody Bravo However:

Bravo is about 50 years old. She's a major BIG SHOT in Delphtean Society and is one of the few 2nd generation Delphteans still alive. Bravo is a hero, she's saved her people countless times with her wingsuit and grappling hook. (When your planet has titanic god-like serpents and their aggressive crocodilian worshipers that both have a taste for your species' flesh, you need a few heroes.)

Her fame rocketed her to the upper echelons of her society, complete with adoring fans, lots of money, and power. However, the stress of living as the perfect role model for her species wore her down and grew to hate it.

So, when TZ failed to shut down that security system, she faked her death and ran off-planet to the black-market-infested asteroids. She spends a few years getting blackout drunk, sleeping around, and getting into fights. She basically tore down her whole life to self-destruct because sometimes power just sucks man.

Bravo would wholeheartedly adore Spamton

"you're sellin' me potion little dude? Hell yeah."

"... I don't have Kromer, but I have credits?" She watches Spamton eat it and laughs. "Okay, where's the nearest ATM?"

Bravo is the type of person to choose to spend the night in a dumpster because "cool, why not?"

And she'd take his deals purely to see what happens, then take him to the bar afterward. She'd also explain that, honestly, money and power aren't really freedom. Sometimes, you just gotta go out and self-destruct a little and things'll be cool. (Bravo is not necessarily handling her lot in life well. But she thinks this is good advice.)

Lastly, FU:

She's a young cloned medic who everyone treats as if she was the previous medic. FU is an amazing surgeon and is fairly introverted. She typically wears a medical mask to hide her face (a trait she's had prior to current events). FU is softspoken and prefers to keep to herself, but she enjoys her job. Her hobbies include xenobiology (aka, non-Delphtean biology).

She'd 1000% try to convince Spamton to come in for a physical (I mean, how often have you met a living computer program that has a physical body? NEAT! And he produces eggs called pipis somehow?! This is entirely professional and any suggestion otherwise would upset her. FU is very repulsed by sex) and if he'd let her, they'd end up fast friends. (Also he's so little! And an adult! AWESOME!) I don't see him being enthusiastic about this.

Considering he probably has IBS and potentially other problems, she'd try her best to help him out. Even if she has to bring in TZ as a consult.

She would make deals with him, she's quite used to it and if it makes him happy, why not? She'd also try to help him out with his verbal tics and work through his self-loathing. She basically invented mental health care for the Delphteans, once she realized how ubiquitous it is in the clones.

Essentially, he'd have friends in this universe, at least in one of the kingdoms. Some of my other OCs would also get a kick out of him. (Honestly, a pic of Ex engaging in a fight with his heart would be awesome. He just really likes fighting for fun.)

Another note about this universe is that the "common" Galactic internet is called the holonet and it's based on rainbows. Spamton would be sparkly here.

002.  BACKSTORY  .  

          the  lee  family  has  always  been  small  ,  consisting  of  lee  min - soo  ,  lee  ye - eun  ,  their  eldest  son  jae - young  ,  and  their  daughter  mina  .  with  min - soo  as  a  pediatrician  at  new  york  presbyterian  and  ye - eun  as  a  professor  at  new  york  university  ,  the  lee  family  lived  in  a  comfortable  life  in  the  suburbs  of  new  york  .  although  jae - young  is  six  years  older  than  mina  ,  the  two still  got  along  well  and  were  raised  fairly  normally  .  the  only  thing  that  truly  marked  mina’s  birth  was  being  born  a  year  after  the  grand  uprising  .  her  parents  ,  being  older  in  age  ,  constantly  told  mina  and  her  brother  about  the  purebloods  and  the  pureblood  monarchy  with  an  unbiased  approach  (  despite  being  humans  )  and  ye - eun  teaching  an  ‘  introduction  to  the  monarchy  ’  -  type  course  at  nyu  .

          growing  up  ,  mina  has  always  had  a  tolerance  for  the  pureblood  presence  .  she  would  always  hear  the  other  kids  her  age  battling  over  whose  side  they  should  be  taking  ,  but  she  never  cared  much  .  as  a  human  ,  mina  knew  that  her  presence  wasn’t  important  ,  and  that  she  could  only  live  for  herself  ,  so  that’s  what  she  did  .  mina  lost  friends  through  the  years  as  those  friends  had  parents  who  believed  that  the  lees  were  too  ...  submissive  to  the  pureblood  monarchy  .  they  weren’t  submissive  by  a  long  shot  ,  but  is  seemed  as  though  their  decision  to  live  their  lives  as  best  they  could  considering  that  they  were  mortals  ;  their  lives  would  end  once  they  reached  old  age  and  that  was  the  end  of  it  .

          fast  forward  to  her  college  years  ,  and  mina  gets  a  frantic  call  from  her  mother  that  her  brother  ,  jae - young  ,  had  run  off  and  joined  a  group  of  hunters  .  apparently  ,  jae - young  had  always  been  against  the  way  that  his  parents  and  mina  were  so  passive  of  the  monarchy  ,  and  believed  that  he  needed  to  help  humans  take  back  their  power  .  the  summer  of  2012  ,  when  she  moved  away  to  college  ,  had  been  the  last  time  that  mina  would  ever  see  or  hear  from  jae - young  .  mina  completes  college  ,  and  immediately  takes  a  boring  job  that  has  nothing  to  do  with  her  degree  .  mina  finds  love  and  adventure  when  she  encounters  romance  for  the  second  time  during  her  sophomore  year  of  college  ,  and  finds  herself  engaged  at  the  age  of  twenty  one  .  

          but  mina  fears  commitment  ,  giving  the  bogus  excuse  of  not  being  old  enough  for  marriage  to  bolt  .  she  abruptly  ends  the  engagement  ,  and  high  tails  it  out  of  new  york  before  anyone  can  tell  she’s  gone  .  mina  takes  a  road  trip  through  the  states  until  she  winds  up  in  louisiana  in  2017  ,  carrying  nothing  more  than  a  few  suitcases  ,  a  credit  card  with  a  decent  limit  ,  $500  on  her  debit  card  ,  and  a  picture  of  her  parents  with  her  .  when  she  arrives  in  new  orleans  ,  mina  gets  herself  an  apartment  and  when  looking  for  a  job  that  was  definitely  below  the  degree  she  held  ,  mina  managed  to  sweet  talk  the  daughter  of  rancher’s  grocery’s  previous  owner  to  sell  to  her  .  all  it  took  was  mina  selling  her  car  for  a  few  thousand  to  make  the  deal  .  

         now  ,  mina  has  settled  into  new  orleans  .  her  ownership  of  rancher’s  grocery  has  expanded  into  her  developing  a  love  for  food  ,  and  is  known  for  having  a  food  blog  called  mealtime  with  mina  .  she  lives  in  the  french  quarter  ,  in  a  one  bedroom  apartment  overrun  with  the  few  plants  she’s  managed  to  keep  alive  ,  random  books  stacked  around  her  apartment  instead  of  on  the  bookshelf  ,  and  it  has  her  all  time  favorite  purchase  :  a  velvet  pink  couch  .  supports  small  businesses  like  her  life  depends  on  it  ,  so  don’t  expect  to  see  her  out  there  shopping  at  department  stores  .  if  you  do  ,  she’s  been  brainwashed  —  send  help  ,  immediately  .

003.  PERSONALITY  .

          big  neutral  energy  !  as  an  adult  ,  mina  might  make  some  people  upset  with  her  opinion  that  evidently  humans  were  doing  something  wrong  in  order  to  fall  to  the  purebloods  ,  so  she  keeps  that  to  herself  .  much  like  her  parents  ,  she’s  all  about  living  her  life  as  best  she  can  and  attempts  to  not  stir  the  pot  with  the  supernatural  living  around  her  .  mina  figures  that  they  have  their  lives  and  she  has  her  own  ;  despite  her  efforts  ,  though  ,  she’s  managed  to  find  herself  ....  entangled  (  😅 )  with  the  purebloods  as  she  has  become  a  paranobis  .  can  be  kinda  dumb  knowing  the  dangers  of  being  associated  with  a  pureblood  and  being  around  vampires  ,  but  still  goes  for  early  morning  jogs  anyways  . 

          likes  to  enjoy  herself  ,  though  .  despite  her  neutrality  and  the  way  that  her  indifference  speaks  before  she  can  open  her  mouth  ,  mina  likes  to  have  a  good  time  !  she  can  be  the  life  of  the  party  depending  on  the  situation  ,   and  loves  to  drink  ,  even  if  her  mouth  may  get  her  into  trouble  .  she  can  be  very  blunt  at  times  ,  responds  with  ease  to  the  energy  that  she’s  given  ,  and  finds  comfort  in  being  with  herself  !  she  will  take  herself  on  a  date  like  there’s  nothing  to  it  ,  and  enjoys  the  hell  out  of  doing  what  she  wants  !
