The whole 'Orin steals a companion' thing is really annoying, there should be some kind of warning like with Shadowheart and the forest in Act II before a major character is entirely stolen from you for the plot's sake. These kinds of games are largely built on the companion system, the primary appeal to me is that I get the chance to explore the storylines of these characters and get to know them, having one at random locked off until the end of Act III (presumably, only just happened to me) is EXTREMELY frustrating. It's important to have stakes, don't get me wrong, but the fact that I just lost a character I've barely had the chance to have content with is annoying, and since I saw that apparently characters with major plot content in the city can also be taken I can't IMAGINE how bad that must be for a playthrough, let ALONE if you're romancing the person. All they needed to do was have the 'the game may change if you venture farther in' option they use for all new or changing areas, that would've been an easy fix.

no actually now that im sitting down im gonna talk about it. the entire core of bg3 is survival. not just surviving the tadpoles, the absolute, the netherbrain, but surviving losing everything. all of the companions have lost everything - whether it's weighted the same or not. every single one of them has experienced tragic loss and pain, the complete shatter of everything they thought they had, thought they knew, thought that to very very core of their being they were.

and maybe thats why im so fucking taken by this game. it came in a year when i lost everything. when i was at the end of my own rope, staring down a past i could never get back and a future that, beyond "fair" or "happy," just didn't feel possible. and i survived. i don't know how, most days i'm still struggling, but i fucking survived.

and that's been... a recurrent thing in my life. in everyone's lives, i'm sure. you to have to reinvent yourself, to reclaim and find who you are after tragedy. you will never get the person you were before back. ever. you will, forever on, be a different human being than you'd ever been before. and even that new self may one day find its end falling around it and you have to become a new person again.

but you can survive.

hell, you can do better than survive.

you can live.

you can take that pain and loss and you can face it head on, with the knowledge of everything you're never going to get back, and you can keep living. you can move forward. the end isn't the end. not until you stop fighting, not until you stop living.

and that's so fucking powerful. that is what bg3 is about, to me. that is the theme of every character's story in that game. losing yourself, coming to terms with that, and then becoming something more, something different than you ever used to be, and living.

Today a friend made me feel pretty shitty about myself, in lots of small ways. At one point she said "You're pretty obsessed with that show, huh?" with a tone that wasn't exactly friendly.
