Tumblr media
you've been friends with him since you were a student in high school, being inseparable and attached at the hip. whenever there's a metal band that's going on a world tour and is going to tokyo, he always comes knocking at your dorm's door. quite a number of nights and midnights of your teenage years were spent with him in the moshpit, and patching each other up because someone got too rowdy in said pit.
unfortunately, once you two graduated, due to a shortage of teachers in jujutsu tech tokyo's sister school located in kyoto, you had to transfer, making you and suguru drift apart for some time. of course, you always kept in touch with the man, a month wouldn't pass without either of you shooting the other a message, you'd always greet each other happy birthdays, send each other memes, and on rare occasions, you'd attend concerts together like you used to, but suffice to say, your relationship now is lackluster compared to your relationship then.
a few months ago though, you received an email from principal yaga about coming back to tokyo and being the third year's teacher. he informed you that he has already asked principal gakuganji about the matter and there was another sorcerer who could handle your students in kyoto, making the decision a no brainer.
the offer made your heart skip a beat in all right ways and in just a few more messages, you were unofficially a teacher at tokyo metropolitan jujutsu technical high school and the rest is history.
ever since reconnecting with geto, you've gotten closer and eventually started dating your best friend since high school. there were a few changes about him, but none that you minded. he was taller, broader, hair a few inches longer, and now, he wears it in a half-up hairstyle unlike back then when it was always in a bun. he's more mature now too, wiser, smarter, better at strategizing. finally, back when you were students, a hundred percent of the time, he'd opt to still hear his school uniform when going on outings, except for those concert nights where he'd wear this uniform pants and then the band's merch tee. nowadays, when you'd go on dates, he wears baggy pants, yet the chosen top is still the same -- at this point, you're sure that ninety percent of suguru's closet is just black band shirts, while the remaining one percent is composed of his uniforms.
it fit his whole aesthetic; his chosen outfits. it's all very him, and at first, you thought that was the only reason why he wore the things that he wore.
when did you change your mind? right now, as he stood before you with his pants down for the first time.
it started with him recommending you a song, the summoning by sleep token and at first, you reacted to it the way you do with any good metal music, headbanging and wondering how the band composed such wonderful sounds, but it was five minutes into the song where the mood in the room changed.
suguru's featherlight touches accompanied the sensual instrumentals and the yearning in the vocalists words and voice translated itself into the way you ran your fingers through your boyfriend's hair.
oh, and my love
did i mistake you for a sign from god?
or are you really here to cut me off?
or maybe just to turn me on
'cause these days
i would be lying if i told you that
i didn't wish that i could be your man
or maybe make a good girl bad
i've got a river running right into you
i've got a blood trail, red in the blue
something you say or something you do
the taste of the divine
you've got my body, flesh and bone
the sky above, the earth below
nothing to say and no where to go
a taste of the divine
one thing led to another, and one by one, you were both stripped of your clothing until you were nude, having nothing but the other's body heat to keep each other warm.
geto found his ego skyrocketing at the sight before him, and you found yourself salivating at the sight before you.
suguru's cock was hard, the tip - flushed red from the blood rushing downward - moist with specks of precum. it seemed to be so heavy, the muscle curved down, presumably from the weight. bulging veins decorated the shaft and it was all so pretty, as weird as it sounds to describe your boyfriend's dick with the word. perhaps using big would be more appropriate. after all, the fact that you were intimidated by the size shows in your eyes, looking like a deer in headlights.
"it's okay, baby," geto cooed, breaking you out of your how-am-i-gonna-fit-that-in-my-mouth induced trance. one of his big hands were on the side of your face, his thumb stroking your cheek in comfort. "you can take it inch by inch, kay? you'll be good for me, won't you?"
under his spell, you couldn't do anything but nod. the only thought bouncing around in your head was the want, no, the need to please the adonis of a man in front of you, and as a thank you, he graces you with a soft smile before pulling your pouty lower lip down with the pad of his thumb. your eyes wander over to his other hand, jerking his cock off and pressing the head to your kiss swollen lips.
"fuuuck, there you go, pretty." he moans out as you suck it into your mouth. his precum hits your taste buds and the salt and tang of it almost makes your eyes roll to the back of your head.
encouraged by his hand petting your hair, you fit more of him in your mouth.
you try to make it easier for yourself by relaxing your jaw as he pushes his hips forward slowly, but the ache slowly creeps in. the sides of your mouth starts stinging as he stretches it out and centimeters after, tears are pooling in your eyes. you don't make a sound, though, or make any indication that you wanted to stop.
you wanted to take all of suguru in your mouth, you just wished it wasn't so damn hard.
"hey, hey, baby, don't cry." suguru looked down to sneak a peek at your beautiful flustered face, only to be heartbroken when he met your teary eyed face. he was quick to wipe the falling tears as he feels his heartbeat quicken. still, he can't help but chuckle. "it's not even half way in yet." his hand unexpectedly clutched at your hair when you gasped at his statement. it took everything in him to not immediately thrust his hips into your warm mouth after that.
a shiver went up your spine when he gave you a warning glance and you hoped you were able to communicate your nonverbal apology with your eyes as effectively as he could.
"look," he started to pull away. "w-we can do just the tip first, 'til you get used to it."
he stopped thrusting then, even though it took all of his power to do so. he wanted you to set your own pace, take as much as him as you could, until like said, you get used to it, and he knows you'll get used to it, after all, you're his good girl, always eager to please. if he's being selfish, he'd say it was one of his favorite things about you.
he absolutely adores that determined sparkle in your eyes as you bob your head up and down his shaft. spit's starting to leak from the corners of your mouth and drip down your chin to your tits, but you don't pay it any mind. you have a singleminded ferocity that aims to pleasure suguru, and nothing is going to stop you, not the way the back of your throat aches from being poked roughly each and every time you go back down, not the way your cheeks and your mouth starts aching, and not the way the corners of your lips feel like they're being torn apart. after all, if they do end up getting cut, you know suguru would drive you to the hospital with a fake reason.
no one but you had to know the real reason why geto suguru wears baggy pants.

20 Questions for Fic Writers!
I've been tagged by @stars-of-kyber and @andthebubbles. 😁 So although I feel barely qualified, I guess I best do this...
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
7. 🤗
I started about 2 months ago, so... and yes, they're all Kanthony. Initially just started as a way of contributing to Anthony Week 2023, and I didn't even expect that I'd actually do all 7 days.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
13,370.
Currently ranging at 661 to 3,779 per fic. Rookie numbers!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
So far, just my beloved Bridgerton.
But there have been a couple other shows that have tempted me...
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Astride  - 166
Nursery  - 118
Hunt - 105
Yours - 94
Temptation - 88
Having published a handful with various ratings, it's quite interesting to see the kudos, bookmarks (private vs public), and subs ratios! Much to think about.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes.
Why... I sort of have a need? Idk, when I see a comment it's hard to just leave it hanging there and not to reply. Like irl if someone looked at something I made and verbally commented on it... and I just stared back blankly not saying anything. 😐 This is how it feels to me on the receiving end at least haha. And my replies saying various forms of 'Thank you!' is probably quite repetitive, but hey ho.
Plus comments give you that lil hit of dopamine; from both povs as a writer or reader. Being on the reader side for most of my Ao3 activities I tend to comment on most of fics I read, I can't help it - I must tell you what I loved about it and why, and there's a pleasure in reciprocating that back too. Look, now I've written half an essay on the subject, gaaah. (I've not been on Ao3 as much as I'd like to recently, and because I opened it to scoop out the stats for some of the questions above I can now see that I have some unreads... and the need is happening.)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmmm *thinking really hard*, I don't think any of them have an ending that is all that angsty. If I had to choose, maybe Temptation?
The pattern I've shown so far in my posted works is that it's gonna be 90% fluff. Though that is liable to change. 😆
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Probably Nursery?
I'm not sure, cause they've all ended on a pretty optimistic note so far. But that one has Kate and Anthony with a few of their kids, so it's the furthest on the Kanthony HEA timeline.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet...
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Ummm 👀 I may have dabbled in some smut.
What kind... hm, the kind where both people are panting for each other, and end up caving because they literally can't hold their horniness in anymore (this totally explains why I went feral for Bridgerton S2, ha). Another pattern I seem to have is making Anthony a submissive man puddle.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not yet, but I do have some crack ideas I may explore.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of, I very much doubt it.
How often does this happen to people?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I'd certainly be all for it if anyone ever wanted to translate any works of mine. 😊
If I was proficient enough to write in other languages, then I would probably try publishing the different versions from the get go.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Kinda?
Nothing formal, but there was a lengthy comment thread on Reddit some months ago where myself and another user went back and forth re-writing the script for that stormy library scene 😅 (not so much re-writing what was already there, bar the last few lines, more of a continuation in a universe where Kate hadn't fled).
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Must I even answer this? Kanthony, c'mon now.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
There's only 1 work that I have, where I've actually started a chapter 2. And I have all the faith that I will finish it. ✍️🤓
Other potential WIPs, that are currently just posted as one shots, only exist in my head... who knows if they will see the light of day.
16. What are your writing strengths?
This question feels illegal to be asked.
I have no idea, I'm very new to this whole writing thing. At least in terms of fiction, so I'm not sure what I'd consider my strengths to be. I feel like I need some more practice before I can get a real sense of this?
I would say that dialogue usually comes very quickly to me, and it's having to fill in the bits around it that takes more brain muscles. So that might indicate something.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything apart from the answer to the question above.
But really I think it's remembering that there is a world outside of the main couple happening, and trying to describe the details there. Also other general 'setting the scene' stuff like clothing, weather etc etc. I usually just want to jump straight in with some random dialogue.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
On writing it... no thoughts; not done it yet!
If I needed to for some unknown fic reason in the future, I'm sure I'll be apologising profusely in the author notes for trusting Google translate and probably butchering whatever language it is.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Still just the one so far, Bridgerton. 😌
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Hunt 🥺🥹 I was a lot of feels, and just very indulgent tbh.
I also really enjoyed my shortest one, Obedient, which was in 2nd person (hadn't done that before). The writing of that one was just really fun and I idky but I've reread it quite a bit!
__________________________________________________
I'm woefully looking at my Ao3 bookmarks (which has grown exponentially since joining Tumblr), full of things that I've not got round to reading yet. So I'm tagging partly based on stuff hanging out on top of that pile: @islemeadow, @ladykettlechips, @hydriotaphia, @eleanor-bradstreet, and the smut aunties @colettebronte & @fayes-fics 😋 (if y'all wanna do it, ofc. I tried to find those who hadn't been tagged/done it yet, sorry if you've actually already done this and I've just not found it).

Of course I have fallen down an ITSAY/IPYTM rewatch rabbit hole the moment I have things to do. Instead of spamming @bengiyo lemme liveblog...
On Viki the new subs are chef's kiss. Grammar, tone, readability, idiom usage, much improved. I also FINALLY know what MoRaoYuLok means!
Man the fight they have at the temple after this middle school play is the EXACT same fight they have in the bathtub in IPYTM. Like the dialogue is almost word for word. I love that the same fight bookends the beginning and end of the acting dream for Oh Aew. HOW IS THIS SHOW STILL GIVING ME NEW TEAS YEARS LATER?
'I think someone like you will quit eventually' - cut to him quitting in IPYTM and them having this exact same fight. And people say Teh changed...HE NEVER DID.
If I could ask Boss one question I would ask him when Teh's dad died. Like...it haunts me. I feel like so much of Teh is explained by his dad's death. Like, does he die before or after the middle school play? Was it illness or incident? It's the last key to completely unlocking the character and I WANT IT.
I have so much more of an ear for Thai now than I did when I first watched this, and the difference in that plus the difference in the subs is making this a whole new experience.
I also now know what 'Saleng' means thanks to the subs. MLC's Leng's parents really named him after a sidecar motorcycle? Jail.
Man now that I know a smattering of Thai, Teh and Tarn were really basically dating. Like she had expectations, he'd made promises. He really just abandoned her to run after this boy he swore up and down he hated.
I always forget Oh Aew had 90 thousand Instagram followers. And he wasn't even showing feet. You know his DMs were wet. Oh Aew's influencer status needed to be explored more.
They actually translated some of these thirsty Instagram comments 🤣 'I want to be the red bean up there' referring to the red beans topping the oh aew dessert. HORNY JAIL FOR OH AEW'S INSTA FOLLOWERS.
Teh literally got under the covers and stared at this man's picture for WHO KNOWS HOW LONG.
WHY DID I START THIS?!
Hoon really treats Teh like an annoying little brother.
Teh and this pomade 🤣 THE RITUALS ARE INTRICATE AND ELABORATE.
This teacher really decided to roast Teh in front of everybody🤣
Teh really sitting here at this cafe dragging down the mood with his heavy vibes.
Man I forgot how petty Oh Aew could be 🤣 'Oh Bas you're so smart, so much smarter than dumbass Teh *bats eyelashes*
The friends really went through it with these two. You know how hard it is to maintain a friend group that includes two people who are in love/have beef? Yes I put those two things together. Kai n'em fighting for their lives this whole show.
Not Bas the New Friend putting his foot right in his mouth talking reckless about this Chinese play and the whole group bracing for impact. Nobody warned him these two are in love/have beef?
Oh Aew embarrassed as shit now, plan totally rumbled, not that Teh's dumbass even understood why he wanted to do a CHINESE PLAY WITH PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.
'Didn't anybody tell you?' WHY Y'ALL AIN'T TOLD HIM INSTEAD OF LETTING HIM GO POPPING OFF AT THE MOUTH?
Man I had forgotten how subtle yet totally clear the acting in this was from jump. Billkin and PP's eyes, their face journeys, the small microexpressions, the body English...you know exactly what they're thinking at all times.
Teh: 'Oh? A Chinese play?' Mod n'em's facial expressions: 'Oh shit here we fucking go.' Bas's face: 'What just happened? Why'd the temperature drop 20 degrees?'
Oh Aew said leap if you're feeling froggy and they were really about to scrap over a 3-year old petty beef. Who says men aren't emotional?
Teh was out of order making fun of Oh Aew's grades and he knew it immediately too. Forever popping off at the mouth and instantly regretting it, from the beginning.
Bas looks so distressed that he caused this whole altercation. I'd actually really love to know Bas's perspective on this story, because from where he's sitting the whole thing is WILD.
It's really striking me on this rewatch how protective the friends are of Oh Aew, not just Bas but Phillip n'em as well. He always engenders such loyalty, whereas Teh is harder to love hence why he doesn't have other friends except their mutuals.
Oh Aew called Teh an asshole with his whole chest, love that for him. Teh was absolutely being an asshole.
Kai really like 'how y'all still beefing off some middle school shit and we about to be in COLLEGE? Let it go!' And you really get the feeling Oh Aew really did want to try to squash it until Teh came at him all RAH.
I never really got a sense of the dynamic between Oh Aew and his parents. It's clearly loving and supportive, but it doesn't seem terribly affectionate and it's maybe a little distant? Idk how much of my reading of it is due to it not really being foregrounded as compared to Teh's familial dynamic. But Teh is main character and Oh Aew is the love interest so Teh does get a deeper dive.
You forget all the time that Teh is totally the spoiled baby brat of his family.
In this scene where they're waiting for the admission results, you can see Oh Aew's stress level shoot up in real time when he realises Teh has entered the room. Teh has put in his head that he's not gonna make it, and he doesn't want Teh to see him fail (and probably gloat about it he's thinking). And then Teh FOLLOWS him...no wonder he runs away like Teh's the devil. Teh's literally number 1 on the admissions list and Oh Aew didn't make it. And he thinks there's no way he can make it through the admissions system so the dream's dead. With the hindsight of realising that everything Oh Aew did since their fight was a combination of wanting to prove to Teh he was wrong about him plus hoping that they could repair their broken relationship and be close again...ARGH this show will forever put me in my feels.
Oh Aew always looks so small sitting on that beach alone in this scene. It's been said a million times, but the filmmaking in this show absolutely slaps. That tracking shot following Oh Aew getting his bags from Teh and then walking away as Teh follows? So good...
You really feel the weight of Teh's apology here, how he first apologises for the immediate offence and then realises no, that's not all he feels guilty about. The apology is such an unburdening for him and you can feel the weight lift off him when Oh Aew accepts it. Also, Oh Aew's surprise and immediate surge of emotion at each stage of Teh's apology...ugh these boys acted DOWN, so detailed, so effective!
This show is built around Teh and Oh's conversations, they're so important to me for how raw and vulnerable they always are. Part of the reason things fall apart for them in I Promised You the Moon is that they stop talking to each other like this, because they're trying to be brave, or to be grown up, or to be considerate, or to hide how not fine they are.
For Oh Aew to say 'I forgive you but bitch I DESPISED you, I don't know if we can ever come back from that' was such a moment. Teh being forced to sit with the possibility that what he broke with his pride and selfishness might not ever be fixable, and deciding to try ANYWAY...see this is why despite him being the worst he's also the best.
No but Teh really went from calling that sidecar 'hideous' and 'embarrassing' to taking it everywhere because it could carry Oh Aew, and all the things he wanted to give Oh Aew. But this fool really packed up every school book he owned in a suitcase he stole from his brother and left his house at the crack of dawn to give them to Oh Aew. Down HORRENDOUS.
Oh Aew's smile before he answers Teh's ke yi ma always gets me.
Guess I'm back on my ITSAY/IPYTM bullshit

Controversial personal opinion (actually a rant) about RDARB because I'm still so annoyed about that novel
"Red, White and Royal Blue" is without any doubt one of the most annoying books I've ever read and I really can't understand how it managed to become so popular when it's so blatantly... Bad
I think the horrific Italian translation made me dislike it even more, but there were so many problems with it already
First of all, the side characters. Absolutely useless. I'm not even joking when I say that I had to stop for 5 entire minutes to try to remember who the heck was Leo. To me, it makes perfect sense that they decided to get rid of a lot of them in the film, they shouldn't have been there in the first place
Secondly, the dialogues. They couldn't have felt more surreal. You're telling me that the Prince of Wales, who's been getting PR training and etiquette lessons ever since he pronounced his first word, actually expresses himself like a dockworker? It all felt forced, like the author was trying way too hard to make every single line witty. But it didn't make me laugh, I just found it cringe
Thirdly, the emails. Once again, I had to stop because the second-hand embarrassment was becoming unbearable. God, I wanted to wash my eyes with bleach. Especially because the terrible prose (we'll go back to this later too) of the characters was associated to the writings of some actual intellectuals and poets. It was also a very unrealistic plot device to cause more drama. Basically a disaster under every possible point of view
And what can I say about said drama? Every single conflict was solved within 20 pages. While some superflous parts of the plot strecthed out for an eternity, issues found their solution in an instant. How can an international scandal involving the White House and the Royal Family last for the space of a chapter? *insert Italian boh*
Now, just a couple of thoughts about the main characters. The enemies to lovers trope was objectively badly executed. Their rivalry just felt very childish and based on nothing, so it consequently lacked tension (but no problem, the enemies part came to an end in less than 100 pages). And one thing that annoyed me was that they were supposed to be in their 20s (setting aside the maturity that they were supposed to have because of their respective roles) but they acted like teenagers. After they kind of got together, their in-person communication pretty much stopped existing because they spent every single second together having sex. What sort of development is that?
A word or two about the political sub-plot too. Apart from being uninteresting and very one-dimentional (I agree with the author's political views, but you cannot make such an absolute distinction between good and bad, we don't live in fairytales), it was also totally predictable. Like, Rafael Luna's "big secret" was pretty much spoiled 200 pages before the reveal, so I was just waiting for it and it wasn't surprising at all (just like the results of the elections, for instance)
Lastly, the style. As I've already said, part of my disdain probably derives from the translation. But still. This thing has really been checked by an editor? Most of the descriptions sounded like my brother's composition about his PE teacher written on his first year of primary school. And then, out of nowhere, the author changed register and started to wax poetry about the most mundane details. Just tell me why. I've read better fanfiction
I'd have so much more to say but I think this is enough. If you liked the book, good for you! Your opinion is totally valid and the majority of the world shares it so you're probably also right. I wish all that enthusiasm could change my mind since I bought the novel with high expectations and spent time reading it only to be disappointed and enervated by it

it's really amazing how you do such a great job translating when neither korean nor english are your first languages, i wouldn't have guessed that at all! your translations are always very thoughtful and nuanced. i need to watch the vid again because i wanted to ask you abt certain phrases for my own curiosity, i was too distracted by how cute he was the first time lol. do you have any translator notes or director's commentary that you want to share in lieu of a specific question for now?
hi! thanks, all of this is so nice to hear. i'm so glad that my subs come off as nuanced and well-put. ^^ indeed, they're not my first languages, which makes me a bit 'insecure' (sorry, lack of better term) when it comes to translating.
sometimes i'm afraid i may be repetitive or off-track. false friends, contextualized things, different interpretations, idiomatic expressions, etc etc... i always do an in-depth research if i am not sure about something. i have to say, i try my very best to make sure that what i'm translating actually makes sense and doesn't sound awkward. especially with korean, a lot of the time there are sentences that change meaning according to the context or sentences that can be translated in more ways. so i tend to think to myself whether i should put it in one way or the other, and i check many times before posting. unfortunately, sometimes i still notice inaccuracies after it's been posted… and i'm a perfectionist so this isn't a good combo :,)
anyways, ask away! i'm more than glad to answer your questions. when preparing the description for the youtube video i thought i could put interesting info but then again i was busy so i couldn't. i quickly rewatched it to see if there was anything i wanted to mention.
not sure how interesting this could be, but i really liked the opening phrase: "저기 좀 태평양… 저기 중간에 있는 깊은 바다 같아요. 네… 깊이를 알 수 없습니다. 계속해서 깊어지고 있는 뮤지션뿐만이 아니라, 여러가지 부분에서 계속해서 깊어지고 있어서 저기 바다 멀리 있는 깊은 곳에 있는 그런 분 같아요". i liked the comparison between the idea of the ocean being deep and jonghyun diving into a variety of things other than him growing as a musician. i had to tweak the translation a little because it's difficult to make it direct. but yeah, i liked the image of the far away, profound sea it created. it's like jonghyun himself is a wide and deep sea.
also, i have to say jonghyun's 말투 (his speaking/his way of talking) is so cute. it's hard to explain but i like the emphasis he puts on the ending of words. sometimes in interviews he says that his pronunciation isn't clear and that he slips up a lot, but it's cute! and tbh i understand what he says just fine. he tends to say '네네' (yes yes) or '그죠' (true, right) a lot too!
another cute thing is that he tends to say '-구요' at the end of verbs. it's not grammatically conventional, i think it's just a way of speaking in different settings and it sounds 'softer' to both say and hear. for instance, at 7:50 he says '진짜 많구요. 작가님들도 훨씬 많고.' = there really are (many people) and writers, too. also at 10:03 he says '오늘… 이제… 마음이 좀 상할까봐… 안찍어봤구요. 퇴근하면서 찍어볼려구요'. the sentence directly means 'i didn't stamp/scan it in case my heart got hurt', though it's obviously best to translate it as 'i didn't scan it in cause i'd get hurt/in case it'd be hurtful for me. i'll try when clocking out.'
(i noticed jonghyun tends to switch from polite formal to high formal korean too! not a big thing, it's very common) at 19:25 he says '저는 개인적으로 태연씨의 가사 저기 더 제 성격이 맞아요' and this can be translated in different yet similar ways. what he means is that the lines taeyeon sings in lonely and his personality are alike. they're closer to what his personality is like. at 21:52 he says '좀 더.. 커리어 쌓~가고싶어요', meaning he wants to 'build', deepen his career as a writer. i really like that the word 공감 was used and said a lot. it's like, empathy. agreeing with something, finding something relatable and easy to apply to yourself.
i would love to share more but i will stop for now. sorry, this got longer than i thought omg feel free to ask any questions, it's no bother! thanks so much again for reaching out to me with your good words and feedback <3 ^^

Us Against You, Frederik Backman (with Neil Smith (Translator))
I went straight into reading the second book of the series after the first because I enjoyed the setting so much and I wanted to see what happened to the characters next. Once again the author used the sports team's struggles as a brilliant centre to the drama, but the story was really about deeper and heavier themes such as the loss of a child, suicide, homophobia and alcoholism.
I found this a darker book than the first, more focused on character than plot and that made it quite hard to read at times. I liked the changing perspectives and how it took time for them to slot together, but I can see how it could be jarring and make the story difficult to follow. The rhythm of the story was very reminiscent of the rhythm of being in a sports crowd for me.
I didn't like the character of Richard Theo very much. I think that everything going on between the characters would probably have been enough on its own to cause friction and that he was kind of an annoying meddler who could be blamed for stirring up trouble. On the other hand, I loved Benji and the development of his story and character. Actually there were a number of sub-plots that I was quite invested in!
Highly recommend this one

Mystic Pop-up Bar - Episode 2
Tumblr media
I should probably getting ready for work, I know too well, but these days I've been dragging my feet to work. My job doesn't bring as much pleasure as it used to when I first started. Hopefully, things will get better. Anyways, I won't finish this episode in one sit, I'm fine with this, I'm just really curious about what's going to happen.
Weol-ju has Kanghae experience her powers in a dream, letting him going on a date with a cute girl. Then she brutally wakes him up and shows him the contract she wrote for the two of them. However, one of the clause stipulates that partaking in the dreams of other might enhance his ability, which he wants to actually get rid of. So he backs out of the deal, in fear of being stuck with much worse than what he has now. She won't give up that easily, so she goes to see him at work, bringing food to his coworkers saying that she wants to hire him. He takes her apart and says that his answer is still no. So she traps him by having a whole lot of old ladies pour their heart to him and he concedes victory to her and agrees to the contract.
Kangbae's landlord and her daughter come to the street bar to have some mackerel. Weol-ju wants Kanghae to touch the lady, once her daughter's gone so they would know of her troubles. Turns out that she's not the real mom of her daughter. Her jealousy caused the death of her real mother. Weol-ju kicks her out, because it reminds her of how people were gossiping about her and how her mom died unfairly. She refuses to help a murderer, no matter what Kangbae says.
To help his landlady, Kangbae decides to steal the magical alcohol and do it himself. However, when he gets home, the lady collapsed and he takes her to the hospital. He gets scolded pretty bad for stealing the alcohol and they warn him not to use any of it. Unfortunately, as he put it in a water bottle, the lady's daughter drank some and he ends up in her dream. They see how good of a mother the lady was. It doesn't really change Weol-ju's mind about helping her, and Kangbae only convinces her by promising to sign fully the contract if she does help. So she agrees. But it's too late, because the lady died. She makes a bargain with Death to have her one day to fulfill her wish. So they find the father, but unfortunately, he forgot everything about his past wife. They don't really have time to drag him to Seoul, so it's not going to work... But lifesaver, Kangbae still has a little bit of the alcohol in the water bottle.
Thanks to that, they manage to unlock the dad's memories and have him meet with his daughter, fulfilling miss Andong's wish. She can then leave without any regrets. Also she has been forgotten by Suhwa and can rest in peace.
While they throw a welcome party for Kangbae as a new official employee, we learn that Weol-ju has been punished to save 100 000 humans from their grudges because by hanging herself at the Sacred Tree, she brought bad luck to the Tree which was protecting the country. It has been invaded and 100 000 people died. At first she refused the punishment, but then the lady showed her a scroll, which changed her appearance and made her accept to undergo that punishment. Unfortunately, they didn't translate into subs any part of the scroll, I recognize the Chinese characters meaning life after life, but that's it. Is it related to the prince she liked? We'll probably discover that sooner or later.
And that will be all for episode two. So far, this is a really great show. It shows very well human nature to me, while it talks about stuff that are sometimes hard to approach. It's only the beginning, but we can already see some character growth, hence I'm really looking forward what is to happen to each of them.

When Xiao Qi visits Wang Palace with Awu is really an underrated moment!
Xiao Qi calls his fears out by saying that marrying him wronged her. He sees the luxury of the house, he never cared about these things but even before falling in love with her he didn't want his wife - the famous princess - felt disgraced by his side.
But Awu reassures him and says: "those days by your side, do you know how peaceful my heart is?". Awu never felt so protected and sincerely loved, and she wants Xiao Qi knows that she is aware about his total devotion and she loves him for that. Nothing is more importat than these pure feelings, and both value this kind of love&relationship more than others.
And then Xiao Qi touches her hand on his arm and he's like ◕◡◕✿
What truly captivates me about this scene is the serenity they both seem to exude. Which makes perfect sense as it's the morning after the Re-do Wedding. In fact, one could treat this scene as a continuation of their conversation about Awu's insecurities; only this time it's Xiao Qi's turn to be unsure about his place in Awu's life and her turn to reassure him that there is nowhere she would rather be than by his side. Even the sentiment expressed by the reassuring party is largely the same and could very well be shortened to: "What matters is you and not the state of you." Hmm, where might I have heard this line before...?
I also can't get over how tranquil their conversation truly is. Sure, Xiao Qi reveals his fears, but it is done without any unnecessary drama. He's not beating himself up unduly or promising her the moon, why, he is not even fishing for compliments! It's just a constatation of fact, if one tinged with an undertone of sorrow. And she replies just as calmly and just as matter-of-factly: "At your side my heart can be at ease."
What's rather amusing is how much the level of Xiao Qi's insecurity and indeed the core of his concern changes depending on which subtitles one chooses to go by.
Chinazone's Xiao Qi is concerned about the the disparity of Awu's original prospects and her present station. "Marrying me is an ill treat to you," he says, seeing the very fact of their marriage as an act of injustice.
Viki's subs give us this: "Marrying me has caused you to suffer." In this version the marriage is simply a cause of Awu's subsequent suffering; moreover, I am rather wary of the word suffer being used in this context.
Okay, let's see what our lovely Russian subbers have to say on the matter. FSG Fireflame has chosen to translate this line thusly: "Ты никогда не должа была выйти за такого, как я," which literallly translates into: "You should have never married one such as I." No mention of any suffering to be had; what this Xiao Qi is concerned with is the disparity of birth, only this time his reservations are less about Awu's status being high and more about his own being comparatively low.
Let's round it up with Asian Dragons and their "Выдать тебя за меня было несправедливо по отношению к тебе," which translates into: "Marrying you off to me was unfair to you." And suddenly we're back to injustice, only this time this injustice has a clear perpetrator, namely the man who decided to marry Awu off to Xiao Qi, our own Liu Bei Extraordinaire, Daddy Wang.
Which one is the closest to the original? I have no idea! If any of my lovely readers can help us shed some light on this mystery, I will appreciate it greatly!
ETA: Thanks to the ever-gracious @rebelfan99, who has elaborated on the original meaning down in the comments, the mystery of wildly differing translations has been solved. Of course it's an untranslatable idiom!

So idk if you guys remember, but I promised to sub Love or Dead back when it was in theaters, with the help of a "friend" (they'd translate the script and I'd make the subs.) They wanted to do this.
Well, that didn't end up happening, and they openly are ignoring the message for a week or more that asked if they were still gonna do it (it was kindly worded and also said it was completely okay if they had changed their mind). They're online daily so it's pretty obvious they are either blocking or ignoring me.
Which is just ridiculous because from almost the start this person has been extremely rude to me while being oblivious about it. We met twice irl. The first time was good, but the second time...I was put down the whole day, called me messy, told me "no offense, but have you even considered college" when I shared my woes about not having a job and being in financial crisis, they talked all day about how amazing their life and jobs in Japan are, shushed me during the movie when I asked one simple question, tried to make me feel bad for the fact that I don't really laugh out loud/emote while watching movies in public (I cried tho so idk what else they wanted from me)...I pushed all that aside and let it go....until that weekend. they had invited me to a OL doujin convention...but then the day before they cancelled on me, saying I had been rude the entire day we had hung out and that "my friend probably wouldn't like you". Now, they KNEW my social anxiety was bad and there's no way I was gonna go to a big con like that on my own. I felt like I was being punished. I did end up telling her "I'm sorry if I was rude but I felt like you were doing the same to me. I let you into my home and you berated it and berated me for not going to college etc."
The literal only thing I can think of that she could've taken as rude was when I asked, completely innocently, why she paid in 500 yen coins exclusively. I just had never seen that but she got super defensive cause it was money she had saved up to attend a tour of her fav band who ended up breaking up. That's upsetting of course, but I wasn't looking down on her, and how tf was I supposed to know? That's me being rude but the shit she did was okay? Huh. But seriously, tell me if I was in the wrong here.
I've been holding this inside for months and wanted to get it out. This shit is why I'm hesitant to meet fans of stuff I like irl... especially if I have talked to you a lot.
