summary: it was just so hard for the boys to let you do your own thing when it came down to dating, didn’t matter that the person you chose to date was actually a friend of theirs.
a/n: one of the older dm requests I had in my inbox, so I’m super glad I finally got around to doing it. I hope you like it my love ♥

What you do in your private, romantic life, should be nobody's business but your own and that of the person that you were currently seeing, but your brothers seemed to have made it their business the moment that it was decided that you would be a part of their band.
At first, you could deal with it, but this, what was happening right now, was absolutely unacceptable.
“I don't understand why it's so hard for you to find somebody your own age! He's too old for you!” Jin yelled.
“Too OLD? Jackson is the same age as Namjoon and Hoseok, YOU are older than him!”
And see, Jin didn't really appreciate it when someone brought up his age like that in a... disrespectful manner. But you were already in rage and the fact that it seemed like all of them were currently against you, despite you only having gone on three dates with Jackson so far, didn't make this any better.
“What hyung wants to say is..-” Jimin tried to de-escalate the situation before it could go any further, but it was already too late for that.
“I don't give a fuck what he wants to say. I am so fucking done with you all trying to decide who I get to date or not!”
And then everybody was up on their feet, telling you to stop because this was reaching a level of disrespect that they did not tolerate, not from you and not from any other member that ever got so outraged in a fight. But you were done with them. You were done with seven grown up men trying to tell you what to do, especially when it came down to your love life.
You were genuinely happy with Jackson, he treated you well, he made you laugh and he was there for you when you needed him and yet all they did was complain because you were 'too young'.
Despite them all knowing him and being friends with him.
But suddenly that did not matter anymore, because he dared to touch their little sister and that was unacceptable.
“You need to calm down,” Namjoon said.
“Don't you dare tell me what to do right now,” you got up and grabbed your bag, then put on your shoes, ready to get the hell out of there.
“Hey!” Taehyung wanted to run after you and grab you, but you were already so riled up, that he stopped, especially when he saw the angry tears stream down your cheeks, “Let's just... talk. Please.”
You wanted to talk.
But not with them.
Right now, you were done talking to them.
You drove over to the man that this entire discussion had been about in the first place, told him everything, how disappointed you were with them, how unhappy you were that these kind of things kept on happening and that you just wanted them to understand that you were neither their little baby sister that they had to take care of 24/7, nor their daughter that they had to be overprotective of.
You were a grown woman who could make her own damned decisions.
Jackson let you vent, did not say a word, but instead, just held you in his arms and wiped away your tears when necessary.
Only when you seemed to have finally said your piece of mind, did he say: “It's easy to forget that you're not really their sister after everything that you guys have been through together.”
“But would that change anything if I really were their sister? They should not be treating any woman like this.”
“Oh, I agree. I just think they're scared that you'll end up being hurt. This is no excuse for them to treat you like a baby or tell you what to do, but I want you to know that they're not doing it on purpose or be mean in any way. They're doing it because they love you. Maybe a little too much. I think that's the problem.”
“Then how do I change that? How can I show them that I don't need them babying me and telling me what to do? How can I show them that I'm perfectly capable of deciding my partners on my own? That I can make life choices on my own?”
“It's a process. Eventually, they will come to terms with that, they have to,” Jackson kissed your forehead, “And if it ever becomes too much, you just take your keys and drive over to my place where I'll take your mind off things.”
You finally let out a little chuckle, “I actually really like the sound of that.”
“And who knows, maybe, if things are going well and in the direction that we both want it to go... you can... you know,” Jackson looked around, then back at you, not wanting to say it quite yet, but you knew he meant that you could move in with him.
And it was true, it was a little early to start thinking about that, despite you and him having known each other for a while, but you were grateful for the offer anyways.
“Honestly, sometimes I think my relationship with them would be better if I didn't live with them. And you know, it's not like it's bad, I still love them like they're family, it's just... the fighting is getting worse with each passing day and each decision that I make without consulting them first.”
“Yeah, I agree. Distance can sometimes be best,” Jackson nodded, “Why do you think I moved out when I did? I love my own boys like my brothers, but we're all at an age where we have different interests, hobbies and views of life. That's normal,” he brushed a strand of hair behind your ear, “Namjoonie and the others are reasonable though. Give them a bit more time and they'll realize that too, I mean they've already started buying their own apartments. Eventually they will realize that moving out of the dorm and into their own apartments won't weaken their bond, but strengthen it. And once they get to that point, it’ll all be easier.”
You smiled once again and leaned into him, Jackson immediately pulling you as close as possible, “Thank you.”
“Anytime, princess. I'm always here when you need me.”
But despite of what Jackson had said, he decided to call up Namjoon and meet face to face with him the following week, knowing that – despite his worries for you – he has never been unreasonable. And so he explained your situation from your point of view and why what Bangtan was doing was actually, really toxic for you and your relationship with them.
Because if they kept this up, he was genuinely worried that this might break you all apart.
“I'm not just saying this because I'm dating her, I'm saying this as a friend to you too. I know you guys love her, but if you keep this up, I'm not sure how long she's going to sit through this anymore. You know how stubborn she is, if she has enough, she'll leave and none of you want that.”
Namjoon let out a heavy sigh and nodded, “I know. The night that she left and drove over to your place, we actually all sat down and had a discussion about this. We know we can be overprotective. And I mean, truthfully speaking, we're all glad that she chose you. We all know and trust you.”
“It's not about whether or not you trust me, Namjoon, you should trust her a little more. She's not a child anymore.”
“I know. It's just.. to us she's always going to be our baby sister.”
“Just let her do her thing, man, I promise you she'll do good. She's an amazing girl and if you let her do her thing, she'll prove to you guys just how capable she is of handling her own stuff.”
Namjoon stared at him for a moment, then he smiled, “You know what.. I'm really glad it's you, Jackson. Seriously.”
He smiled proudly for that compliment.

“Near? I’m heading out for work.”
There was no response for a second and Mello nearly thought that Near wasn’t going to respond, but he rounded the corner just as Mello took a half-step out the door. The restless night had left Near exhausted and Mello hoped he’d at least go back to sleep after.
“I’ll see you when you get home,” Near murmured, not quite looking at him.
“Take it easy today.” Mello held his arms out, inviting, and Near stepped into them without hesitation.
“I can’t,” Near said. Mello could practically hear the grimace in his voice. “I have orders to fill.”
Near hadn’t been particularly interested in any of the work Ba Sing Se had to offer, considering most of it was either customer service or construction work. But people in the Middle Ring, as well as a few from the Upper Ring, had taken a liking to his craftwork, so he’d started his own little business.
“At least get a nap in.” Mello kissed Near’s forehead. “Promise me.”
“I’ll try,” was all Near offered before he walked away, leaving Mello in the doorway alone.
The streets of the city were busy, as they usually were in the mornings, especially where they lived. Mello walked through them silently. The people who had come to know him greeted him cheerfully and asked after Near.
When they’d first met him, Mello had been cold to them, suspicious. After all, he didn’t want them to know that there were two fugitives in their midst and he couldn’t give anything away. If they were found, they were dead.
Though they were still on edge, Mello and Near had warmed up to the people, mainly after discovering they were mostly harmless. Not to mention, they hadn’t seen their own pictures in any of the wanted signs around Ba Sing Se.
“Get some more sleep, you looked exhausted,” one of their neighbors called to him jokingly. Mello feigned a smile and nodded. Near had been struggling with nightmares since they’d arrived at Ba Sing Se and as long as he wasn’t sleeping, Mello wasn’t either. He couldn’t let him suffer alone, not when it was partially his fault.
-----
Mello was certainly not a fan of the freezing temperatures, cold wind whipping against his face. Similarly, his fellow Fire Nation soldiers shivered and groaned, though all of them fell silent when their commander walked past.
The Southern Water Tribe, diminished as it was, still had capable waterbenders, and it was their mission to capture or kill them. Mello had been on plenty of raids before, but never to either of the water tribes. He was interested to see how well they would fare against the Fire Nation.
Judging by the mass scrambling that was going on when the ship came close enough to the Tribe, it didn’t seem like things were going to go all that well for them.
Mello ignored the feeling of guilt that was creating a pit in his stomach. Part of him had always abhorred the raids, the pain they brought on others, but he was a soldier and pity had no place in him.
Screams began to rise up when the ship finally docked and a flood of soldiers descended on the Tribe.
-----
Mello shook the memory away and focused on what he was doing. None of the retail jobs would hire him, apparently because he was too intimidating to work with anyone, so he’d settled for construction. Though, he would have to admit, there was something therapeutic about hammering a nail into place.
“Hey, come eat lunch with us,” one of the other workers called to him. “It’s break time, man.”
Part of him wanted to tell them to fuck off and leave him alone. But, that wouldn’t bode well for his job, nor for blending in. Things weren’t the same in Ba Sing Se as he was used to. Adapting had taken some getting used to, but he’d gotten good at being less rude.
“Sure thing,” Mello said, plastering on a fake, polite face. “Just give me a few minutes to finish this up.”
The others nodded, smiling at him with approval. Whether or not they liked him wasn’t really a concern of his, but it was smart to stay on their good side. Blend in.
The last thing he needed was to get on someone’s bad side and get ratted out because of it.
-----
“Please,” the white-haired man had said, holding out his hands. “I’ll tell you where the waterbenders are if you let them go.” The children in the corner cowered away from Mello, from his flaming hand, and the other that held a sword.
“If you’re lying, I’ll kill you,” Mello sneered. Still, he waved the kids out. They ran, crying and yelling. The pit in his stomach made itself known again. “So, where are they?”
“I don’t know where the others are,” the man began, “but I’m one. I only didn’t tell you because I’d thought you’d kill them.” To prove his point, he directed an arc of water in the air. Mello grabbed his arm and dragged him out.
“That’s all I need to know,” he said through gritted teeth, wishing that the man hadn’t just given himself up like that. He’d seen the prisons and knew what happened to waterbenders. The guy would be executed or kept in a cage.
Either way, his end would be miserable.
-----
“You’re home late,” Near noted. Mello grunted and flopped down in a kitchen chair.
“I got kept up by my coworkers,” he said, watching as Near poured him a cup of tea. “They’re a talkative bunch and I’m trying not to be rude to them.”
“You, trying not to be rude?” Near asked, raising an eyebrow. “Who are you and what have you done to my Mello?”
“Oh shut up,” Mello huffed. “I’d imagine if they liked me, they wouldn’t report me if they saw my face on a wanted poster.”
“That’s smart.” Near gave him the tiniest bit of a smirk. “And maybe if you’re less mean you’ll actually be able to get a job at a shop instead.”
“Please, as if you’d be able to. You’re just as bad as I am.”
“Hardly. Now come on, you promised me a game of Pai Sho.”
-----
“You’re telling me, out of all of you, only one waterbender was captured,” the commander shouted. “One! It’s pathetic. It’s a fucking disgrace. Keehl, you’re excused for now. Go guard your prisoner. The rest of you will stay here.”
Mello was more than happy to escape the scene, the commander’s anger boiling in the air. It was all luck that he was the only one to have caught a waterbender.
Said waterbender watched him with wide gray eyes as he approached the cell. He didn’t seem at all fazed by his capture, nor his captor standing in front of him.
Mello turned his back once he got to the cell, standing there as he’d been taught, straight back and searching eyes.
“My name is Near,” the prisoner spoke up. Some were more talkative and some didn’t try. Mello hated the talkative ones. He was always sad to see them go. “I think you should at least tell me yours.”
“And why’s that?” Mello asked quietly.
“So when I go to prison, I can tell everyone about the man who caught me, in case one of them escapes and finds you one day. So they can get revenge for me,” Near said dryly.
“Very convincing.” Mello paused, before looking down at the man for a brief second. “It’s Mello.”
“Did you do that to yourself or was that someone else?” Near pointed to Mello’s scar. “It looks like it hurt a lot when it happened.”
“Someone else,” Mello said gruffly. “And yeah, it hurt.”
“I appreciate you not doing it to me.” Near offered quietly, “you don’t seem very evil. I thought you’d be much harder to talk to.”
“Don’t get too comfortable.”
-----
“I win, again,” Near said smugly. Mello crossed his arms, glowering.
“I’m almost certain that the only reason you ask to play this is solely to piss me off.”
“Then you’re wrong. I play with you because you’re the only one who gets close enough to beat me. Mind you, you have won a few times.”
“Yeah, yeah. I know that. I fucking hate losing though and you know that,” Mello grumbled. Then he yawned, stretching. “I’m exhausted.”
Near was quiet for a moment, looking at Mello blankly, then frowning.
“You shouldn’t have stayed up with me last night. You need sleep.”
“You need sleep too and you fall back asleep better when I’m up too,” Mello argued. “Not to mention, it’s my fault. I’m gonna keep staying up with you.”
“You shouldn’t blame yourself,” Near shot back, crossing his arms.
“Come on, let’s just get some sleep,” Mello said, getting up and heading to the bedroom.
-----
The commander had made a huge mistake. He’d constantly put Mello on guard duty for Near, since the rest of the soldiers were doing grunt work they normally wouldn’t as punishment.
And Mello had gotten… attached. More so than he usually did with prisoners.
So, on his next shift, he’d carefully snuck the keys to the cell away. When he got to the cell, he crouched down low. Near tipped his head in curiosity. He’d smiled a bit, but his face was much more thin and gaunt than it had been.
It made Mello’s heart ache in a way he didn’t quite understand.
“You don’t have family in your tribe, right?” Mello already knew the answer, from their talks, but had to make sure.
“I told you I was an orphan,” Near said, a little crease forming between his brows. “Why?”
“How do you feel about Ba Sing Se?” Mello whispered, holding out the keys. Near leaned forwards, grabbing the bars. A twist of disbelief and relief made his eyes widen.
“Can we get off safely?” Near asked, one hand trembling, reaching out.
“We dock in an hour and I know every inch of this ship. They won’t know we’re gone until my shift is over. Three hours after we’ll leave here.”
Four hours later, the alarm bells sounded on the ship for their escaped prisoner. Neither Mello or Near were there to hear it. They were on their way to Ba Sing Se.
To freedom.
-----
Mello had never been Near’s night guard, but he’d never heard anything about him having nightmares from the man who was. He’s not sure the man would’ve been able to tell. Mello is a light sleeper, luckily, so when Near starts to gasp and whimper, he wakes immediately.
It happens like clockwork. Near has a nightmare, Mello wakes up, then Near does too, and then they sit there. Mello just waits for Near to calm and talk to him. Near’s told him several times that’s all he needs to do, is just give him a minute, and Mello is glad to.
Near’s nightmares vary. Sometimes it’s the raid, playing over again in his head, his people’s blood staining the snow of his home. Other times, it’s on the ship, and Mello dies. They aren’t free and Near is sent to his grave too. And sometimes it’s incomprehensible, just horrors over and over.
Mello waits for Near to talk, smoothing his unruly hair back and holding him close.
“I’m sorry,” Near whispers. He always says that, and Mello always says the same thing back.
“Nothing to be sorry about, Near.”
Near is quiet for another moment, leaning against Mello’s side and blinking slowly in the moonlight. His eyes almost look silver and Mello has to sort of bite his tongue to compliment them because he’s not sure it’s the best time to flirt.
“Thank you for staying up with me,” Near says slowly. “I know I said you shouldn’t but… it helps.”
“It’s what I’m here for. We’re in this together, Near.” Mello kisses Near’s forehead and hugs him tight.
Mello sees the tiny smile Near tries to hide and smiles too, genuine for what felt like the first time that day.

omg pls rant abt Lila i also have.. a lot of issues with her and how ppl have reacted to her character
okay well first and foremost: i Love ritu. i absolutely adore that woman and im so happy that she's finally getting the attention she deserves, i support her and david dating too - so my opinions are genuinely not based on anything to do with that. just bc ive been accused of that by people who didnt realize ive been rooting for them since last summer lol.
anyway.
my biggest issue with lila is the fact that she was introduced as a chameleon. as brilliant or clinically insane as the situation requires. unpredictable. to me that sounded so incredibly interesting, because right from the bat i knew she was gonna turn out as the bad guy, or at least one of them and i was HOPING she would. i was really hoping she would be going batshit crazy on them, doing her thing as the evil person, then when s2 came along she got revealed to be the handler's daughter which to me made it even more exciting? because thats potential to get REAL crazy.
in the end, what we got was half-assed and incoherent and neither here nor there. we didnt get a chameleon, we got a mirror. lol. i expected her to be able to adjust to situations and people perfectly, charming them maybe, yknow. chameleon stuff. (would've loved it if she for example looked different to everyone and nobody actually knows what she looks like, alas. that would've been too creative i suppose)
and yeah her humor was "twisted" in a way, and she was charming... in a way. not to me, not to five, and i think the fact diego fell for her is really just him latching onto another problem/person/situation he needs to fix. the guy with the biggest trust issues on the show, openly telling her he prefers to know what people are even lying about, trying to cut her off multiple times the entire season, getting kidnapped and drugged by her to be shown off and introduced as "boyfriend" (??), turns out to be in love with her. okay. makes little to no sense, but i suppose you could partially blame it on her ability to be unpredictable and a chameleon (i still dont even know what they meant by that, where is the logic in calling her that-)
her undressing diego down to his underwear was creepy as hell to me, she knew exactly he’s only been stabbed and there was nothing else. she patches him up and climbs in bed with him as if they’ve known each other for ages. diego seems a bit "eh" at first, then just decides to fuck her. alright. a) diego, the guy with the biggest trust issues- b) i could see it as a letting off some steam thing tbh, just destressing or whatever. but he still had the stab wound that he allegedly almost bled out/died from so..... lmao. makes sense. in the end it wasnt just a quickie, it was ~love~ and that just doesnt sit right with me.
she lies to him from the get go, she manipulates his every move, she's invasive as all hell, she cant take a no in most situations, but sure. its love. sounds healthy.
the whole clusterfuck about their weird asylum relationship got completely drowned out by her "trying not to fall for diego", which essentially just made her character seem to be all over the place. she seems unfinished, like they disnt really know what to do with her, started off strong and then went off track and couldnt get back on. it seems like they changed a lot of things last minute and i cant make sense of her actions, especially not the way they wanted me to. its clear they were trying to keep up this guessing game about whether she would turn good for diego and his siblings or betray him. it was executed so poorly though, it just feels incredibly incoherent. she contradicts herself more often than not, and fine, lets say they wanted her to look confused about her situation and everything - it was still executed so poorly idk how else to put it. she was neither crazy enough for me to believe the character sheet we got beforehand, nor was she innocent enough for me to believe she really wanted to join them.
she literally tries to KILL all of diego's siblings and him in the end. she only seems to be considering joining them very last minute, like minutes before diego's little speech she was about to erase the entire hargreeves family. and she looked like she was having fun doing it too lmao. just doesnt sit right with me at all. diego proclaiming he loves her after all THAT doesnt sit right with me at all. like what, he tries to get away from her pretty much all season but decides she's worth it only after she tries to kill his family? diego??? im- come on.
i appreciate the thought of a redemption arc, but she wasnt nearly evil enough for me to even believe her original intentions, so i dont really know what her redemption would even look like.
and last but not least - the chameleon vs mirror thing. :) bro. that annoyed me so much. she essentially just goes and god-modes the entire season within 10 minutes, to say it with the words of a friend. like what was the point of that? the logic? how did they even know she could do that, if they allegedly dont know where the other kids with powers are? who did she train her powers on? plus, this is the oldest trope in the history of sci-fi/fantasy stories. someone turns out to be able to copy/mirror back the great powers of somebody else and overthrows everything. yawn.
what makes the others special if she can do whatever they do. maybe its just me being nit-picky at this point but i really dont want it. its so boring.
i had such high hopes for lila, i seriously was so excited to see her and it Still feels like such a let down just thinking of how s2 turned out. dont even get me started on all of them NEEDING a love interest apparently. because you cant be happy without one. thanks, but no thanks.
"s2 is gonna focus on the siblings' relationships!!" my ass. lila and diego's ~bond~ was as unnecessary and illogical as klaus' powers suddenly tenfolding and his paranoia of the spirits just lowkey vanishing with no real explanation other than "he's sober now ❤"
so yeah, all in all lila just seems the least fleshed out, randomnly thrown together and a Bit forced on the romantic part. i would've preferred her just being the big bad and going mental in the end. that would've been an interesting character choice for her.
from the bottom of my heart: why not.
sorry if this is too long, i couldnt help digressing here and there.
