Splatoon x Dragon Ball WIP

There's some basic background information and poll under the cut if you want more details!

Ok so this is FAR from finished so this is for a little background on what I'm trying to do here.

I'm loosely basing this animation off Goku and Vegeta's first fight, specifically the part where Vegeta goes Great Ape, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

In terms of character choice, I went with OG Agent 3 as Goku because they just fit the bill as main protagonist, and I'll have 4 and Neo 3 standing in for Krillin/Gohan later in the animation. Important to note that they're not 1 to 1 replacements either. Neo 3 is cast as Gohan because my Neo 3 is an Inktoling, making them a hybrid like Gohan, but they're not OG 3's kid. The rest of the NSS serve the same role as the Z-Fighters, with 4 being the best friend of 3 like Krillin is to Goku.

The Octarians, specifically the elites, are my Saiyan Army replacements because they're the best option I had as a large army force. Marina, 8, and Acht are special cases, but that goes more into the plot I have mapped out for this AU, and that's for another time. I specifically went with the Splat3 Elite Octoling for two reasons:

Vegeta is an elite saiyan so I wanted to use an elite octoling

Because I thought that the "fuzzification" where the fur grows and the eyes change to match the fuzzy ooze would work perfectly as the transition between their humanoid form and a fuzzy Kraken, which would be my stand in for the Great Ape/Oozaru transformation

So far it's been really fun to put together. I've been learning how to utilize Blender Eevee better throughout, since it lets me have a lot more control over things like lighting and shading. No telling when I'll finish this, but I'm hoping it'll be done in at least a few months. I have plenty of scenes I still have to animate, and then there's dialogue and sound effects I gotta add too, so there's still plenty more for me to add.

Aster suspects his brother’s new friend of being an Octoling soldier, and will do anything to keep her away. Even if that means taking extreme measures. But he’s not as good as hiding his plans as he would like to think.

So I finally managed to put together a cover! This is just going to be a fun little short comic for some of my OCs, set in the time-frame of Splat1. As of right now there’s no upload schedule, but I might try for one a week. We shall see!

Marina's Dev Diaries: localization differences

yeah so I just read through all of Marina's Dev Diaries in Japanese while cross checking it to English localization, just to see how faithfully translated it is and.... GREAT NEWS there's like no significant changes! Like there's the expected minor moving things and wording it different to flow well in english of course, but in terms of overall meaning and characterization its very faithful. I'll cover some minor changes I found but like. again these are so minor it doesn't really matter.

4th Entry Localization: "Poor Pearl doesn't know what to do with a free moment anymore. I'm always catching her bouncing with anticipation."

JP: "Pearl is always bouncing from side to side whenever she has a free moment" This is a reference to Pearl's side hops she did in octo expansion to get hyped and charge her special...this was localized to her "warming up her vocal cords" for the sake of story and the english version just refuses to acknowledge the side hops thing which is. minor inkling biology tidbit at most but eh whatever

8th Entry localization: "I'll handle system management myself! And I think user guidance would be a great fit for Pearl."

imo in JP marina seems more certain and enthused about pearl being in charge of user guidance? I considered not adding this to this post it's barely noteworthy. pearlina crumbs ig

8th Entry Localization: "All that experience making training stages from my days as a tutor at that training program is about to pay off!" JP specifies that Marina tutored at a Takozones training program. What's really annoying is that Takozones are just called something like "Rival Octoling" or "Enemy Octoling" or just "Octoling" in english, but they're supposed to be a specific rank of elite female octoling soldiers. this is just a longtime issue with how muddied octarian classifications are between english and jp lol

12th Entry Localization: "Pearl is joining us too. She doesn't seem to get what it's all about, but she's usually down for whatever. Together, the two of us will make sure Eight gets through it safe!" JP: "Pearl is joining us too. With her being like "I don't really get it, but 'cuz it sounds like fun I'll go!", us two will keep Eight safe!"

This is a super minor change but it's cute getting a quote from pearl where she sounds actually hyped for it vs a "yeah ig shes down for it"

Acht's Letter 1 Localization: ""You should be diligent and dedicated, like a true Octarian!" I heard it so many times that it turned into white noise."

I just wanted to share a pun here that doesn't translate instead of "white noise" Acht says an equivalent idiom of "I got calluses on my ears (from hearing the same thing over and over)" The word for "callus" is homophonous with "octopus", tako. lol octopus jokes

Marina’s picture from Cap’n Cuttlefish’s Octarian dossier destroys me because like, It’s all cool-like with the Octoling Goggles and the Elite Octoling seaweed and all that stuff, and it would look kinda intimidating... if we didn’t know what’s behind those goggles.

And that’s the thing, we do. We know that if you take those goggles off, you’re just looking at a fresh-faced 16-year-old with the biggest softest eyes and cute worried eyebrows, and it’s like. You’re telling me an elite combat engineer in the Octarian army? That’s a baby. Hypercompetent engineering and musical prodigy, sure, but. THAT’S A BABY.

I wish we got to see friendly octarians. Sure, octolings are playable but so far it's only them we see and play. I want to see octarians chilling around like how we see jellyfish do, I want to see them huddled over a match of tableturf and even some as opponents in it. Hell, some could even be interactive npcs that can talk to you or give you little tips (ie ex-octosniper helping young and newer players having a hard time aiming, former elite octoling that you can talk to who gives you tips on handling different kinds of weapons etc). It can't be just the humanoid octolings running about on the surface there are more to us than just them :( I don't want to fight more octarians I just want us to see the surface together please just let us have more octarian friends and friendly ex- octarian army members other than just the playable octolings and the idols

What's Sydney's story, and how'd she end up with so many kidneys?

Sydney is an octoling from the domes who moved to the splatlands!

She was supposed to join the military along with her sister after finishing up with school, but dropped out of basic training pretty early on due to health issues.

Sydney wasn't interested in any of the other job positions offered to her either, which her mom hated. They argued a lot; Sydney wanted to take her time to figure things out, and her mother seemed to always be in a rush to get her to do something with herself. Work. contribute. This was a very prominent mindset to have for dome octarians, if you weren't working then you weren't being helpful. When Sydney met her partner, Rihya, (affectionately nicknamed Riot by her fellow elites) she basically cut contact with her mother and their relationship has been rocky ever since. But who cares here look at the lesbians

Now I'm going to crush you.

Riot is never seen with Sydney or the kids in current art because she went missing for about 2 and a half years. Search parties were sent in the metro, looking for missing octolings, but it was too late in most cases. All santitized octolings are prohibited from returning to their housing units or moving to the surface until a cure can be found and they are deemed ready to re-enter society. For the first time in years Sydney got to see her partner again, only to be told she's basically a zombie and will probably never return to normal.

 She moved to the splatlands pretty soon after that, home just didn't feel like home anymore. With splatsville becoming pretty popular, a lot of inkfish were looking to move there, and Sydney was hired by a family friend of some housing company and has been working for them as of now.

And to answer the second question.. Completely by chance. Octolings from the domes tend to not have as many as they would on the surface, most of the time just  one or maybe two eggs that are actually going to hatch. Sydney and Riot just got lucky. Or unlucky, depending on who you ask.

How are elite Octarians born ?

Elite Octarians are those Enemies who have a harder Ai than regular Octarians and have seaweed in their hair in the story mode

Like is it a some sort of mutation? cuz if I remember says that the seaweed is like implanted into their skulls i don't know I didn't look into splatoon lore back in the days

I get to bring out the artbooks on this one! I had a lot of fun flipping through them to find as much about the elite octolings as I can. From what I gathered it looks like the seaweed isn't implanted into their skulls, and is instead attatched to their goggles.

It likely functions as a symbol of rank to show that they are stronger than a typical octoling. However I don't think that this is solely strength in fighting as we can see in Marina's chat room that Marina herself was an elite octoling, hence the seaweed.

Marina's specialty wasn't in fighting, it was in tech. So chances are elite octos are simply defined as higher rakning octarians than most others.

However, I don't think that mutation theory is far off, I really like the idea and I think I can find some evidence to back it up.

Throughout all of the games elite octolings have black tentacles instead of red, like most octoling soldiers do. Even when fuzzy they're tentacles are significantly darker than others. However, when we look at a sanitized elite octoling we can see that the tips of their tentacles are a green color.

The fact that there are even elite sanitized octolings is strange. If sanitization is meant to make them perfect soldiers, then how are some better than others? Unless they have some sort of phycical difference like a mutation.

Back to the tentacle thing, we can see Marina's tentacles are similar, being a very dark brown color with only the tips being teal. Even in her side order outfit where her tips have a galaxy color, the main color of her tentacles doesn't change.

Of course this could just be cosmetic because idols like the Squid Sisters and Pearl have tentacle tips that change color while the rest of their tentacles don't. I think for those three that is the case, but for Marina it's different.

Why would a sanitized octoling need cosmetics? Why would they care about how they look if they can't care about anything? Maybe it's because they can't change them back.

Here's my theory: In order for an octoling to earn a high rank in the Octarian Army, they have to undergo a mutation process that makes them stronger in the aspect that they are working in. For a soldier it would be physical ability, for an engineer it would be mental ability, etc. This mutation process has side effects, one being staining the octoling's tentacles, which prevents them from changing their color anywhere but the tips. This staining is permantent, which is why it can still be seen in sanitized octolings. Luckily, in inkling society this is a common trend among idols, so it is widely accepted.

Boom, case closed.

But wait. What about Acht?

It is made very clear in Acht's portion of Marina's Dev Diaries that they did not care at all about advancing in the army. Even if they were offered a high ranking position, they would likely turn it down. So why are their tentacles discolored? And why are they more of a brown color than a black or dark brown?

Well I could just say that they wanted to look cool and leave it at that, but that's boring and kind of makes less sense. If discolored tentacles are associated with high ranking military leaders in the octarian army, why would Acht want to affiliate themself with them if they weren't one of them? And would they even be allowed to change the color of their tentacles?

We can clearly see that this color change is still present after their sanitization, but not fully. Their tentacles don't stay brown and instead shift to the purple at was on their tips. Now the tips of their tentacles are more of a red too.

So what gives? Why can Acht's tentacles change but the elite octolings' can't? Because Acht wasn't an elite octoling.

Their sanitization was only partial, which is why they didn't have to wear a uniform and didn't have to fight as a soldier with the other sanitized octolings. So what if that wasn't the only thing that was partial?

Acht wrote in Marina's Dev Diaries that they were "always slacking off and cutting class. I got to know the inside of the instructor's office pretty well." My theory is that, in an attempt to get Acht to pay more attention and care more about being in the Octarian Army, their instructor had them undergo part of an elite octoling mutation, resulting in similar discoloration, just not as extreme. Their insctructor hoped that they would see how much stronger they had become and would want to earn a full mutation. Their plan backfired horribly. Instead of making Acht stronger in something like strength or intellegence, it just made their ability to make muic stronger. This only led them to cutting more classes so that they could focus on making music. This, of course, didn't end too well for them since their devotion to music was what caused them to be sanitized.

Acht's tentacles keep their slight discoloration through the sanitization, but the color itself changes slightly. Sanitization made their skin green, so why wouldn't it change their tentacles too? The consistent pattern of the discoloration is that the main parts of their tentacles are darker than the tips.

Keep in mind that most of this isn't canon and is just my theories. I had a lot of fun with this one, I hadn't really considered the potential lore of elite octolings before. I really like the mutation idea!

This is Elky (Full name Elkhorn, She/They)! She’s an 18 y/o bassist of the idol group Electric Ocean. They used to be a member of Kabamo Co. (elite sanitised octoling) and also used to help dedf1sh with their music before coming across a recording of the calamari inkantation and leaving to the surface. She then got adopted/became the sister of Agent 8, and started making music of their own, which led them to meet her other band members, Coral and Arrowhead.
