Bentley 8 Squad Characters Description

(First, forgive me for my broken English. Second, sims close-up in sims 3 gameplay isn't so good and I can't install pose player for some reason, so I have to go to CAS just to take their closeups).

This is the description of the characters from my fanfiction, Bentley 8 Squad. Like I said in my previous post, they called themselves "Bentley 8" because all of them like Bentley cars. They are living together in a house in Sim City. Each nicknames represent their traits/styles and positions in this squad. Their friendships are inseparable, and they're always there for each other. They established a mental health community named "Im-perfection", and their goal is to help everyone who struggles with mental health. Their Im-perfection community tagline is: "It's okay to not be perfect, and we are perfect because of it". Despite their obstacles, they're always finding ways to chase their dreams in their early 20's. By the way, some original characteristics are changed for the storyline.

Angela Pleasant (Bentley Queen) - age 20

She's ambitious, fashionable, popular, cheerful, and a trendsetter. As a cheerleader captain and queen bee of Pleasantview high school, Angela knows how to fit in. She's always friendly to everyone despite her stuck-up personality, and it made some people nicknamed her "phony" behind her back. But as she gets older, she became more sincere, especially after she's taking a master's degree in psychology. She and her twin sister, Lilith, disliked each other when they were teens. But she apologized to her and they became friends. She also has interests in fashion design. She's a great home cook, and excellent at making cakes. Angela is a good listener to her seven housemates. She loves Dustin so much although they came from different social circles. She suffers from eating disorders and endometriosis, but it doesn't limit her to become a (soon-to-be) psychologist.

Lilith Pleasant (Bentley Gothic) - age 20

She's often misunderstood due to her attitude and black clothing. She's sharp, gloomy, sarcastic, hot-headed, and somewhat rude. But she's really nice if you know her well, and she will do everything for her close friends and lover (especially her boyfriend, Dirk).

Despite her parents (Daniel and Mary-Sue Pleasant) treated her unfairly and favored Angela over her, plus she and Angela disliked each other when they were teens, she's forgiving and didn't hold grudges. Unlike Angela who was a queen bee, Lilith was one of the outcasts in high school. As a lead vocalist in her high school band, and she's taking art major, Lilith is a great artist and talented rock singer/guitarist. She has bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, but her manic-depressive phases make her even better at making arts and music. That's the way she deals with her mental disorders : pouring all her emotions into creations as a coping mechanism.

Dustin Broke (Bentley Rogue) - age 22

He's rebellious, bad-ass, tough, daredevil, and likes to break the laws. He used to be a criminal and drug dealer in high school. He liked to smoke weed and use cocaine. Back then, he liked to steal things. But actually, he's not a bad person. He's really soft on the inside but pretends to be tough. He cares a lot about his seven housemates, especially his beloved girlfriend (Angela). His mother, Brandi Broke, is married to Dirk's father (Darren Dreamer) several years after his father (Skip Broke) passed away.

Then, he realized his dream was never to become a criminal. He quits his criminal career to become an architect. Also, he suffers from schizophrenia caused by the drugs and trauma (his then-alcoholic mother, Brandi Broke, often beat him up when he was a teen), but medications and his job keeps him stable. He's getting nicer and trying to do good, although his rebellious nature is never faded.

Dirk Dreamer (Bentley Brain) - age 21

He's good, selfless, genius, bookworm, and compassionate. He's the smartest among them in this squad. He graduated from medical school at age 19, then he took psychiatry specialization aside from his dream to be a general practitioner because he wants to recover his girlfriend (Lilith), his step-brother (Dustin), and his best friend (Angela) from their mental disorders. As a kind doctor, Dirk is always helping people or put everyone's priority first before him, especially all of his housemates. His hard-work is because he wants to make his late mother proud. He's good at treating sick people or saving lives, and he'll be distressed if he fails to keep them alive. But, he has a terrible sense of humor. He has a library in their house, full of his book collections. Despite his struggle with type 1 diabetes, it doesn't stop him to become a successful doctor. He wrote a best-selling book about his journey as a diabetic psychiatric resident.

Johnny Smith (Bentley Leader) - age 23

He's nice, athletic, charismatic, commanding, and a party animal. He's so confident despite having a green skin due to alien descent. As the squad leader (and the oldest member) who has a black belt in karate, Johnny is trying his best to guide and protect all his friends and lover (Ophelia) in this squad. Johnny is a great organizer and planner. His perfectionist nature makes him never missed any arrangement. He has a bachelor's degree in business. He also likes to be a party DJ in the clubs. He's the second-best home cook in their household after Angela. Although sometimes he's loud and bossy to his seven housemates, it's because he cares and wants the best for them. He suffers from OCD and PTSD because he got beaten up by 9 people, stabbed on his abdomen, and thrown to the filthy dumpster due to hate crime against green-skinned sims when he was 18. But, he's trying to let go of the past, learning karate, and became a successful young executive.

Ophelia Nigmos (Bentley Flower) - age 22

She's kind, worrywart, mysterious, graceful, and patient. She likes every kind of flower, and her hobbies are gardening and writing. Motherly and nurturing, Ophelia knows how to give attention to her seven friends/housemates (especially her boyfriend, Johnny). She likes children, and she's working as a kindergarten (sometimes elementary school) teacher. She's also a talented writer. She has a strong interest in literature and has a bachelor's degree in it. She's also a successful blogger and their Im-perfection website admin as well. Her parents died when she was 10, and she became independent and quiet since she moved to Olive Specter's house in Strangetown. She's often panicking and worrying about the smallest things. Although she has anxiety and paranoid personality disorder, caused by the ghosts of her old house, only writing and gardening that can calm her down beside the meds.

Ripp Grunt (Bentley Clown) -

age 21

He's playful, humorous, hyperactive, talkative, and a heartbreaker. He slept with more than ten women (and also slept with men). But, he never fell in love with them like the way he fell in love with Ophelia and Johnny. As a drama student, Ripp is a talented actor and entertainer. He's great at imitating impressions. He can do a pantomime or stand up comedies as well. He likes to sing/play guitar and often posting duet cover videos with Lilith. He also likes to post pranking videos. His nice and funny personality makes him great at consoling his seven housemates when any of them gets sad, even though he often cries alone when he remembers his past because his father and older brother (Buzz and Tank Grunt) abused him when he was a teen. He wants to become a successful actor and musician despite his struggles with ADHD and chronic gastritis. Although sometimes he can't control his manners or actions, He's still trying to do the best.

Puck Summerdream (Bentley Fancy) - age 22

He's good, shy, polite, thoughtful, and serious. Charming and well-mannered, Puck knows how to treat everyone nicely. Coming from the most respected and wealthy family beside The Capps in Veronaville, makes him the richest sim in this squad. But he's still humble and doesn't want to talk about his wealth. Unlike his peers in Veronaville, Puck didn't want to get involved with Capp-Monty feuds, and he's always trying to be nice to both sides. He likes to wear suits and bowtie. He's an expert in classical music because he has double degrees in mathematics and fine arts (music branch). He likes to play the piano, violin, saxophone, and he can conduct an orchestra as well. He often treats his seven friends at the restaurants, movie theatre, and concerts. His sensitive nature makes him a little bit over-emotional. Despite his weak heart, and his depression caused by the death of his girlfriend (Hermia Capp) due to the mass shooting at Academie Le Tour three years ago, Puck will never let grief or disease obstructing his dreams. He became a successful conductor, and his dream is to bring peace with his music.

saige never believed she was created out of love. it was an action with a purpose, intentions to create the perfect child. the hybrid of both military genius and fashion extraordinaire, molded to their will.

it took them no more than six months after her birth for her parents to up and move, thus beginning the cycle of packing and unpacking, flying and driving, state-to-state and country-to-country. the longest saige had ever stayed in one place was two years.

a photographer, her walls are covered in photographs and art and taped-down plants and in general her room is very ?? cluttered ?? like it’s very home-y but god. she’s a mess. clothes everywhere. she’s probably got a pile of instruments and other miscellaneous hobbies on a chair in the corner that she hasn’t touched in a while

speaking of !! she has a bunch of random, like, skills ?? like knitting and sewing and cooking and three different forms of ballroom dancing, and she can definitely work a gun and a car engine except she goes thru interests so rapidly and is disinterested in most of the other ones b/c her parents forced like half of them onto her.

she plays bass guitar. she loves her bass guitar. she knows other instruments but the only ones she’ll really fidget with are her bass guitar and like, her violin. everything else she’s like ~okay~ at

is essentially wearing this mask of confidence and giddiness and flirtatiousness b/c she doesnt want people to think she’s doing Not Okay.

she loves so much. she loves everything, everybody. falls in love like five times a day but nothing really sticks to her either. if ur a shitty person/come off as an asshole then she’ll be more likely to be attracted to her b/c shes Always been like this. finds them super interesting which is ?? questionable ?? sometimes i want to just. knock some sense into her but y’know what…it’s fine we’re Fine

Its no where near far enough. When i was younger, I couldn’t tolerate my mother. When shes oh hey, im goin to be a bitch for days, then expect me to talk to her. Which explains why i need a daddy so much. I al thankful to mine, and my big bro champ, the two of them create a world where i dont have to worry about what occurs outside the front door. - a bit of backstory, and the strings of complaints, spoonie comments, support groups and things like that: i have a chronic pain condition with compression and the slow approach to parapalegia while on the medication, the norco and muscle relaxers to help the sensation of walking on nails, and endless buzz, this is a gift from 14 years ago, that keeps taking the feeling and control of my legs & feet. I also have an inflamatory bowel disease, so its like shitting hot lava. This has been occuring more regular then a ladies period, and has been occuring since longer then I can remember.

Growing up, i would throw up while shitting at the same time for hours ans hours. Get up in the middle of the night and just let it go. Ive turned memory of this shit to another thought. Right now its about how much time i have left, 20 years? That wouls make me 54, if i go out then, or even in the next 35 years wouls make me younger then my adoptive parents.

Now heres a funny thing, since my dad doesnt really keep up with me, mostly my fault because i hate talkin on the phone, and cant exactly travel at the moment. The point is, “oh you still have to go through that, i hadnt heard so i assumed it went away”, its not that” oh i assumed you just stopped having a horrible mutiple times a month for my entire life stomach pain, just stops, because nothing is said about it. Or the trying to convey that i just do not have the means to emotionally handle it, and so cant make effort to do stuff that hurts my heart. The same is whether or not my mother means it. But shes always been cunty when shes not put first, or in control. It’s interesting she abused drugs and alcohol when i moved into my own house the first time. Then the abuse from her starts, getting mad, being dismissive, just down right fucking horrible for no good goddamn reason.

This then causes me to have an emotional shut down, this abuseive crap, this shit makes me not want to be around her. She cant “do” being alone, and it makes her really mean. The more mean she gets, the more i have no desire to fuck with that. The endless complaints, rudeness, snide comments, endless streams of just foulness. Thank you to everyone whose not like this, is what i want to say. Thank you to daddy and champ. Those who “choose” us, and so help up the folk like me who have all sorts of shit to deal with. Its nice having an insulation.

I do not want contact with people who are sneaky and will put someone else under a bus, i do not want folks who do not give more then lip service to”bdsm full exchange” and “demands” that put them ahead of what they want to do with my daddy. Theres so much in this life that i wont be able to do. I have less then most folk i wager. Going by the wayside, posting to the empty vaccum where the internet remembers.

I can do this. I can do one day at a time forever, one moment, that is an endless cycle of sleep. And meds, and pains. The reason i can do this. Family. Good people raised me, but im home for the first time with these last 6 months, 50 or 60 years ahead of me is not enough time for my daddy, for my big bro. There is a ton of the world to see.

These are the thoughts, and feelings ive had since loosing my hope on handling something just a bit better. Its been super dark, with looking at end of life affairs, looking into kinds of burials, and assisted suicide. Everything that would mean i miss everything i want with my family. I do not mind a death I choose. I do not mind my final wishes. What i mind; the knowledge of folks with my kinds of stomach shit dont really see much longer to the older age brackets. It scares the piss out of me, that it could just be done, i wont be able to wake up and work on my grimoires, i wont be able to tell my daddy I love him. Anytime i feel it, i have to say it. That way in all the tiny moments of time, and if folks can remember me. He will know i would always love him, thank him, appreciate him. He is the scope of my world. Anything less then forever is an unacceptable amount of time. The thought of leaving him early scares me. Its my greatest worry, that i will never know enough, or see enough of his life to only see it really start.

Its hard, it sucks. So thats why my grimoire projects will not, end. My desire to be little, and safe and cared for, must be followed right back into daddies arms, and the worlds hes helped build. I ve been trying to process this, its taken a few months, in suspected truth, probably it will be always there. But, i try and focus on projects, on the little things that can be done in a day. I cant care about my mother demanding i go and see her. Or her being a bitch when i do, and leaving her with a “see you whenever” i said “what ever” and just walked out of her apartment the other night.

So, while she feels i should be doing what ever she asks depite my lack or to too much sleep according to her. Not the exhaustion i get subjected to after the fire of hell erupts from my asshole, and causes me to throw up anything left in my stomach. Yea, between that 1-4 hour production of “this is your life” in food I attempted to eat earlier. Shes got stupid questions that have no bearing on day to day shit, and now that shes done fucking making threats at me, she can shut up, while I sort out how to handle her ass, while being with wonderful people, for what will be the rest of my life. However long i can make it. Daddy, makes it worth it, i want to see him and champ be their best selves. I can instead only do everything that i am able to set their roads up, even if i wont get the chance to see how it ends.

I cry, at night, most nights pooh bear has earned his keep as the cuddle surrogate to daddy. My barking dragon doesnt bark, it would randomly do it; making it hard to sleep with. I know that this internet void, is a public place where people will know, coo!. But I need to post this, i need to put it into the world while I think about how i am going to master the coming years, and not let shit get between daddy and champ and all our dreams.

So, while i get word vomity, and sad. The horizon has this light of the future, the single moment of now, stretching on to the morning. The linear path of all actions, thoughts, life and the experiences, its easy when in thinking of daddy, that i can just aim to make the most of the moments with him. That they know he is the best man i have ever known, the range of his character. His way of dominance, his love and zest for life. The way he steps one foot a time to get the big picture. I will walk with him til my story ends. But, daddy i love you, and thank you. I loves that we have forever and ever. Its not long enough.

But anyway this isnt something i can stop thinking, so my hope is putting just this stuff here, will get it out, and lets me sleep tonight. I am trying to post more, to have a place to unload my thoughts. Thank you for anyone who reads this, its just hard to identify the situation at hand, so many moving pieces. I will try not to post to much of this philosophic ramble, and depression.

her father was her mother’s drug dealer and was entirely absent, more of a sperm donor than anything else. she likely has a ton of other siblings running around that she doesn’t know about tbh.

anyway. she learned pretty quickly as a kid how to take care of herself and how harsh the world was. she got herself up and got to school on her own, cooked her own meals, washed her own clothes, did everything on her own while her mother went on week long benders and disappeared for days at a time.

tw: abuse & sexual assault & violence !! her mom was also quite abusive and this only got worse as she grew older. it wasn’t rare for any of her mother’s various and seemingly random boyfriends to look her way and obviously she hated it. she didn’t like them flirting with her and saying suggestive things to her. she just wanted to be left alone and kept out of her mother’s life. but skeevy boyfriends and jealous mother’s don’t mix and lizzie’s mom would accuse her of flirting back or trying to steal her man or whatever it was that particular day and she’d go to bed that night with a black eye or a busted lip. she was sixteen when her mother’s current boyfriend took something that didn’t belong to him. it was the first and the last time she let a man lay their hands on her without her consent. the next time he tried, she stabbed him through the hand, went on the run, and never looked back.

she left everything behind except the clothes on her back and what little money she had saved up, went to her best friend’s place, and the two took off in his pickup truck without a word to anyone. she never told him (or anyone else) for that matter what happened, but the two had been planning their escape for years, waiting for the right moment to take the leap.

they both changed their names, leaving their old identities and their pasts behind them. elizabeth hopkins didn’t exist anymore. she was lyla bennett and her companion, elliott o’connell. they traveled until they ran out of gas, taking whatever shitty jobs they could find in whatever city they ended up, staying in motels or sleeping in the truck when they needed cash. they both did things they weren’t proud of and relied on the kindness of strangers to get them by. their nomadic lifestyle was not glamorous. they would go for days without eating, a week without a shower, doing anything they could just to scrape by.

before she even had time to let it sink it, she was out the door with all of the money she could gather, never to be seen or heard from again.

she eventually found herself greystone, a little over a year after she kissed the trailer park goodbye. she stayed in a motel until she could get herself on her feet, picking up odd jobs here and there until she got a job working as a dancer at masquerade at the age of 17 (although every piece of i.d. she owned said otherwise) with the stage name honey.

hey, everyone. i was gonna put something clever af here, but im not clever so forgive me. im the worst anyway. youll see. anyway. im bringing you my boy, my muse, my second favorite character in the world, fox kelley.

HE/HIM. ◟ wait, wasn’t that fox kelley? they’re a twenty year old junior, hailing from seattle, washington. i heard they’ve chosen to study film and word around campus is that they’re ; +cheerful & +optimistic but also quite -reserved & -flighty. you know, that could be why they’re labelled as the film geek. if you happen to see them walking to class with their earbuds in, they’re probably listening to rewrite the stars by zac efron/zendaya.

fox kelley was born to a famous actor ( rainer kelley ) and a director ( lila kelley ). they were mostly known for their strange films ( think wes anderson films ). very artistic, very theatrical with bright colors and quirky characters. when fox was born, he was the second born to the kelley family and the media didn’t particularly care – only that he’d been named after the famous x-files character, fox mulder.

his family was always rather close. fox especially with his younger sister, zelda. whenever rainer was filming some movie or lila was directing, the entire family would move with them rather than leave them in one spot because they liked to be close to their children. because of this, fox was basically never in an actual school until high school, when his parents finally decided they should settle down, much to fox’s dismay. he’s pretty smart, though he doesn’t like to brag about it.

fox decided to head off to baldwin because it was his father’s alma mater and it has a great film program. he doesn’t really care about much else, as long as he’s good with the film department. he mainly sticks to himself because he’s kind of the type to stay away from other people’s drama ( unless it somehow benefits him ). he likes the school a lot, especially since the seattle area is so interesting.

the only thing really tragic about his home life, would be his father, who is an alcoholic. the media knows this too and will follow him around whenever he’s out because usually something interesting happens. his father has spent many nights in jail. usually, when he’s home, he doesn’t drink, it’s mostly when he’s filming that things get a little hectic and he turns to alcohol.

personality wise, fox is very friendly to everyone. however, he doesn’t talk to many people. he seems way more mature for his age than normal people his age. he’s totally not the party type, only because he doesn’t want to end up like his father and abuse alcohol, but that’s not to say he’ll never go to a party. fox is not the type to stand up to bullies either and has been the target of many throughout his life. this is mainly due to the whole “homeschooled kid” vibes he tends to give off. however, he’s charming when he wants to be and really just wants to nerd out about films. don’t be too fooled by his doe-eyed nature though, he really isn’t as innocent as he seems. he’s gotten into his fair share of trouble. he’s an amateur sleuth -- a mystery lover to a fault. he’s been to parties ( just doesn’t drink at them ), he’s not a virgin, and while he hasn’t done any of the “hardcore” drugs, he has smoked weed before.

Consult your doctor before setting major health and wellness goals. Always talk to your doctor before making diet, lifestyle, or physical activity changes if you have pre-existing health conditions or are sedentary. If you’re planning to set a major fitness goal, like completing a marathon, always consult your doctor first, no matter your health status.

When you make the appointment, simply say something like the following: “I’d like to set some new fitness goals for myself and could use some guidance.”

Work on your emotional wellbeing before setting physical fitness goals. If you’re experiencing excessive stress, anxiety, depression, or another type of emotional turmoil, let your doctor know. Unless they advise you otherwise, set and work toward achievable emotional wellbeing goals before starting toward your fitness goals.[2]

Treat “emotional fitness” as a primary fitness goal, then let physical fitness flow from that starting point. You’ll have a much better chance of achieving your physical fitness goals if your emotional state is in a good place.

Depending on your situation, your emotional wellbeing goals might include things like attending therapy sessions, starting a stress-reduction regimen, mending a strained family relationship, or changing jobs.

Talk to your doctor about prioritizing other lifestyle goals first. While it’s a good thing if you’re determined to make a wide range of positive lifestyle changes, you may overwhelm yourself if you set too many goals at once. Along with improving your emotional wellbeing (if needed), your doctor may recommend that you set one or more of the following goals first:[3]

Quitting smoking. This is notoriously difficult, and it may be too much to ask for you to achieve this while also working toward physical fitness goals.

Stopping illicit drug or excessive alcohol abuse. Like quitting smoking, these can be extremely challenging goals that may overwhelm your fitness goals.

Improving the quality of your sleep. This may sound less important and less challenging than quitting smoking, drugs, or alcohol, but it can actually be very difficult. Also, sleeping well is a key companion to physical fitness.

Adapt general fitness goals to suit your specific circumstances. Being physically fit means different things to different people, and there’s no such thing as “one size fits all” fitness goals. Your goals should be crafted to fit your needs, which is why your doctor’s advice can be so helpful. Therefore, don’t be surprised or ashamed if your goals vary from general fitness guidelines.[4]

For instance, while 150 weekly minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is a general goal for adults, your circumstances may make a goal of 100 minutes per week both healthier and more achievable.

Write a list of 1-3 short-term goals and 1-3 long-term goals. A goal always seems more “real” once you put it down on paper. Take a few minutes to sit down and write out 2 sets of goals—short-term goals you want to achieve in around 2-4 weeks, and long-term goals you want to achieve in 6 months to 2 years. For example:[5]

Short-term goals: I want to walk for 30 minutes after dinner each night; I want to join a yoga class; I want to be able to do 20 push-ups.

Long-term goals: I want to complete a half marathon; I want to beat my personal best in lap swimming from 15 years ago; I want to go on hikes with my grandchildren and not hold them back.

Revise and expand your goals into SMART goals. If your goals are very vague, like “I want to get in better shape,” you won’t know how to achieve them or how to define success. Instead, look over your short-term and long-term lists of goals and make sure they’re SMART, which stands for the following:[6]

Specific. For instance, “I want to run per week” instead of “I want to start running.”

Measurable. For example, “I want to add to my max bench press.”

Attainable. Running a marathon may not be realistic next month, but maybe it is next year.

Relevant. For instance, “I want to swim faster than Todd” may not be as fitness-focused as “I want to improve my personal best time by 3 seconds.”

Time-bound. Set a specific, realistic deadline to achieve each goal whenever this is possible. Deadlines provide motivation.

List likely obstacles and rate your desire to meet these goals. For each goal you have listed, write down 1 or 2 potential roadblocks. If you can’t realistically see yourself overcoming these obstacles, revise that goal. Then rate each goal on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being your maximum desire to achieve. Consider revising or eliminating any goal that isn’t at least a 7 on your desire scale.[7]

If you know you simply don’t have the time or resources to become a capable cross country skier this winter, for example, you’re just setting yourself up to fail by keeping that as a goal. Perhaps “I will try cross country skiing this winter” makes more sense.

Revisit and adjust your goals as needed at least once per month. Go over all your goals anytime you achieve one of them, or at least once per month otherwise. Cross off ones you’ve achieved or that are no longer feasible and replace them with new ones. Edit other existing goals as needed if your circumstances have changed.[8]

Once you start setting and achieving fitness goals, keep going! Set new and different goals that are both SMART and suited to your changing life.

Don’t sit down for more than 30 minutes at a time. The general guidance is to simply move around more and sit down less, but setting a more specific goal makes it easier to track your progress. After 30 minutes of sitting, stand up and walk around or stretch for 1-2 minutes. After an additional 30 minutes, extend your “stand up” time to 3-5 minutes. Repeat the process as needed.[9]

Consider setting a timer on your phone to remind you to get up.

If you get up and move around more frequently, all the better! For instance, if you’re watching a sporting event on TV, get up and move around during every commercial break.

Do 150+ minutes of moderate (or 75+ minutes of vigorous) weekly exercise. During moderate-intensity exercise, you should be able to speak but be breathing heavily enough that you can’t easily carry on a conversation and can’t sing a song. During vigorous-intensity exercise, you should be breathing heavily enough that simply speaking is a challenge.[10]

Aim for 150-300 minutes of moderate exercise, 75-150 minutes of vigorous exercise, or a combination of both. For instance, 100 minutes of moderate exercise and 25 minutes of vigorous exercise is equivalent to 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise.

Brisk walking is typically considered moderate intensity exercise, while biking at a fast pace is usually considered vigorous intensity exercise.

This is the general weekly aerobic exercise goal for healthy adults. Consult your doctor first if you aren’t sure you fit in this category.

Work all major muscle groups with strength training 2+ times weekly. Use free weights, weight machines, and/or exercise bands to provide resistance as you work all your major muscle groups. A complete strength training workout should typically take 30-60 minutes.[11]

If you’re new to strength training, work with a physical therapist or fitness trainer so you can do the right exercises using the proper technique.

As with aerobic exercise, consult your doctor first if you aren’t sure you qualify as an “average healthy adult.”

Strength training may cause muscle soreness afterward, but it shouldn’t cause pain either during or after your workout. Consult your doctor if you experience pain.

Adjust your goals based on your age, health status, and other factors. Fitness goals should always be individualized, so there’s a good chance that these general goals aren’t right for you. Your smartest option is to work with your doctor to determine the appropriate fitness goals for your circumstances.[12]

As an older adult, for instance, you may have a lower aerobic exercise goal and be advised to do specific exercises that improve balance.

Or, if you’re pregnant, you may (or may not) be advised to avoid vigorous aerobic exercise.

No matter your situation, physical inactivity should be reduced whenever possible.

Set your own goals instead of mimicking others’ goals. It’s okay to be inspired by other people’s fitness goals, or to be motivated by them. But don’t feel like you need to copy or one-up someone else. What’s right for them may not be right for you, so focus on setting goals that suit you and are achievable by you.[13]

Don’t worry about trying to keep up with people at the gym or fitness center who like to brag about their goals and achievements. In the same way, be wary while on social media—people are known to exaggerate!

You’re just setting yourself up for failure if you try to achieve or exceed someone else’s goals.

Tell supportive friends about your goals so they can help you. Pick out the most supportive people in your life and let them know about your new fitness goals. Positive encouragement is always welcome when you set a new fitness challenge for yourself. It also adds some extra motivation when people other than yourself know about your goals.[14]

Celebrate your successes with your friends, and seek support when you come up short. You’ll be surprised how helpful a friendly boost can be!

Don’t feel obligated to tell the naysayers, critics, and pessimists in your life.

Accept failures as natural and keep moving forward. If you achieve every fitness goal with ease, your goals aren’t challenging enough. You should come up short sometimes, and that’s perfectly okay. Revise your goal if needed, and re-dedicate yourself to achieving it.[15]

Learn from your lack of success and use it to help you succeed next time. For instance, if you weren’t able to run in the community 5k race due to shin splints, make adjustments in your training and equipment before the next opportunity.

Reward yourself appropriately each time you achieve a goal. Reaching a fitness goal is a big deal! You’ve taken a positive step toward a healthier and happier life, and that should be celebrated. Give yourself a pat on the back and a nice little reward, then get back to work on your next fitness goal![16]

Personalize your reward so it suits you. You might go out for ice cream, treat yourself to a movie, or go on a day trip with your family.

More middle-aged men taking steroids to look younger

Experts warn about growing number of men in their 40s and 50s taking drugs to fight signs of ageing and boost sex drive

Growing numbers of middle-aged men are turning to anabolic steroids to make themselves look and feel more youthful and boost their sexual performance, experts say.

People who work with users have raised concern about a new trend among men in their 40s and 50s, and some even in their 60s and 70s, who are taking the drug to boost energy levels and fight some of the effects of ageing, such as weight gain and a lower libido. Steroids can cause a range of health problems such as heart disease and blood clots.

We have come across a lot of older men using. Its almost like hormone replacement therapy [used to relieve symptoms of the menopause] for females. Steroids can help you lose body fat as well, said Julien Baker, an applied physiology professor at the University of the West of Scotland.

It is a major problem, but the evidence isnt there about what the long-term impact is yet. We are not sure what these drugs are doing to you at that age, but everyone perceives it as safe.

As men get older their testosterone levels drop, which can sometimes lead to a reduced sex drive, weight gain and muscle reduction. Baker says men get information from magazines and online about the drug, which mimics the effects of testosterone and boosts muscle growth, though some are also prescribed it.

Joseph Kean, visiting research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University, said while over-50s still accounted for only a small proportion of the image- and performance-enhancing drugs population, their numbers have doubled over the past five years. He estimated there were between 15,000 and 30,000 over-40s using in the UK.

Guys are saying they just want to stand a bit taller and feel they can stand alongside the younger generation who are much more aware of how they look, Kean said. He explained that older men typically used smaller amounts of the drug less frequently than their younger counterparts.

A typical steroid cycle can be about three months, starting with less and building up before tapering off. At its peak you could be taking steroids daily and injecting around four times a week, said Kean. Older guys tend to take less, but for much longer one injection every seven to 10 days and sometimes almost consistently.

The Juice Clinic in Sheffield, a service for people using steroids and image-enhancing drugs, has noted an increase in older men asking for help.

Steroid use for older men is often about the youthful effects, and about body image and energy levels, said Sid Wiffen, the clinics team leader. I hear talk of men feeling more pressure now to look good, so they are more likely to go to the gym and dress well.

It can be dangerous and it does worry me. Lots of people we see are keen to make an informed decision about their steroid use, but some get information elsewhere and its not always good.

Once users begin to decrease or discontinue use of steroids, withdrawal symptoms such as low mood and anxiety can occur.

Commentators say the growing popularity of such drugs could be the result of societal changes, with people living longer and expecting more from life.

With an ageing population there are now more key points in peoples lives when they are concerned about appearance, said Jim McVeigh, an expert on steroid use at Liverpool John Moores University.

For men who get to a certain age where they are unable to maintain a particular physique naturally, you can see how they would be tempted to try other means to get a body they maybe found easier to achieve 15-20 years ago. Wanting to look good is no longer just the domain of the young.

But a former user, who asked to remain anonymous, disagreed that there was any more pressure on midlife men now than before. He started taking the drug at 41 and said: Steroids will be attractive to any middle-aged man who can see their youth disappearing and want to fight the inherent vulnerabilities of middle age.

The findings coincide with reports of increasing anabolic steroid use, with a particular focus on younger men. Last year people who worked with steroid users estimated that the real numbers of those taking the drug annually was far higher than the 60,000 people quoted in the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

The drugs, officially known as anabolic-androgenic steroids, were first developed for medical use. While they remain a class C prohibited drug, experts say people are finding it easy to get the drugs online or in gyms. They come in tablet form, although they are more commonly injected into muscles.

Baker said while there could be some benefits for older men under a proper prescription regime, there were risks attached to self-medication and buying the products online. Introducing something your body stopped producing naturally may lead to repercussions or have health implications, he said. Theres not enough research out there to look at that. Someone taking steroids at 50 its not clear what might happen to them in the future.

Getting older gets put on hold for a while

The Guardian spoke to a 53-year-old steroid user, who asked to remain anonymous, about why he chose to take the drug.

I am a normal 53-year old guy and I am a non-smoker who eats well and looks after himself. I go to the gym three or four times a week. I drink some weekends and lead an active social life. I have also been taking steroids for the last three years.

I was apprehensive when I started. I am not a bodybuilder and have never wanted to be one. I got the drug at my gym. I wanted to look healthy and have a nice physique, not rippling muscles but just a bit more definition. I never took steroids when I was younger. Now I have a small dosage once a week and its made me feel fantastic. My testosterone levels and other blood levels are normal. I know this because I have my blood checked regularly at a local clinic for users.

Not only have I got the extra muscle mass I wanted, but the drug has also made me feel good about myself and made me sleep better. It has given me an appetite for life and a better sex drive. No one knows Im on steroids except my partner, who is fine with it.

I am not talking about taking massive amounts. I dont have a massive 60-inch chest. I am a normal guy who looks well for his age. I have a slim waist, not a big belly, and train a little bit.

I dont want to look like younger guys. I am taking the drugs for me, to look good and feel happy. Steroids make you feel more youthful, and in a corny kind of way it is like drinking a feelgood elixir. All the characteristics of getting older, such as feeling tired etc, get put on hold for a while.

When you come off it, in my experience, your body goes back to its normal cycle again eventually. Then, I am tired and all the normal characteristics associated with someone over 50 come back.

Anything in excess is bad for you, but if taken in moderation then its not a problem. Its like having alcohol, its all down to drinking and doing things in moderation. Steroids should fall into that bracket.

I suppose I do worry about the long-term impact of steroids on my body. But I also worry about additives in foods and the effect of using mobile phones on my brain. The list is endless. Irresponsible use and abuse is always the main problem.
