Murray & Wayne Play Matchmaker (title pending… lmk if you have an idea)
Part 1
Eddie is painfully aware of his feelings for Steve. It’s all he can think about most of the time. However, he finds it wishful thinking to hope that Steve likes him back. There’s moments where he wonders, but he tries not to think about it too much, deciding that he’d like to keep Steve in his life even if it means burying the ever growing crush on the jock in favor of friendship.
So what that he spends more time checking his appearance every time they hang out. Also he definitely does not blush when Steve tells him he looks good.
Wayne walks past the bathroom as Eddie’s getting ready and chuckles softly.
“Plans with your boy tonight?”
Eddie blushes. “He’s not my boy.”
“I didn’t hear a no to the plans though.” Wayne grins, catching the tint of pink of Eddie’s cheeks.
"Yes, I have plans with my very platonic friend who I don't have feelings for tonight. Can you drop it?"
"C'mon now boy I know when you're lying. He's good to you and you would make a handsome pair. Either you make a move or I'm getting the adoption papers ready."
Eddie rolls his eyes and runs his hand through his hair one last time before fixing his vest. He can’t help but bite back a smile. He’s not sure how likely it would be to move out of friend zone territory with Steve; but the knowledge that Wayne would and does approve of him makes his heart flutter.
Just moments later he hears a knock on the door and he excitedly makes his way down the hallway only to find that Wayne beat him to it and that he’s already grilling Steve the same way he just did to him a few minutes ago.
“Alright Steve. Have him home by ten.”
Eddie snorts. “Wayne, I’m a grown adult. Do I really need a curfew?”
“Just for that be home by 9.”
“It’s literally 8:30.”
“Better get goin’ if you wanna do anything then!”
Eddie groans and Steve stands there silent with a look of confusion spreading over his face. Wayne lets out another chuckle.
“Nah I’m kidding. I don’t care when y’all get home. I better be headin’ to work soon anyway. Just be safe if ya get your heads out of your asses and have fun.”
Steve and Eddie turn bright red and Wayne lets out a laugh, patting Eddie on the shoulder as he walks past the two of them and into the kitchen.
Steve turns to Eddie after Wayne leaves and clears his throat, point at the door. “Should uh, should we go then?”
Eddie nods fervently. “Yeah good idea.”
He turns as he follows Steve out the door, yelling after Wayne. “Bye! Have a good night at work!”
Wayne yells after him. “Have fun on your da-!” Eddie slams the door shut before he can hear him finish that sentence.
Eddie rubs a hand down his face. “Holy shit he’s on something today.”
Steve lets out a small laugh. “It’s fine, man.”
They head over to the diner, an awkward tension settling between the two of them. Eddie knows it’s not a date, but based off of the way Steve looks at him and Wayne getting into his head earlier, he can’t help but wonder what an official date with Steve would be like.
They manage to get back into their usual rhythm of back and forth eventually and Eddie has a great time. But there’s still that voice in the back of his mind nagging at him to make a move. He tells himself he will eventually, but not tonight. He’ll just take what he can get. He doesn’t want to make anything more awkward than it already is.
