Phone scams have been around nearly as long as telephones themselves. However, the nature of phone scams has changed dramatically over the years. In the 80s and 90s, phone scams mainly consisted of calls placed by real people to sell faulty or nonexistent items that would never arrive at the purchaser’s house after payment was received[1]. As robocalls conducted by computers became more inexpensive with the rise of technology, these calls moved away from being performed by real people[2]. The most recent development in robocalling is the integration of AI. AI allows robocallers to seem more lifelike by giving computers the ability to respond dynamically to customers. Additionally, AI has begun to be implemented to replicate people’s voices from recordings obtained by scammers. These AI replications are indistinguishable in sound from the original person and allow scammers to create infinite custom messages. These custom messages are often used to scam the recorded target’s family and close friends.

The government began acting against robocalls in 1991 with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act[3]. This act made “it illegal for companies or individuals to make pre-recoded robocalls with the intent to sell you something”[4]. Despite this regulation, it was predicted that “50% of [all] phone calls in 2019 would be spam,”[5] and in 2017, phone scam losses totaled over $1.4 Billion[6]. This discrepancy is not due to a lack of enforcement but rather a loophole in the act that phone scammers continue to take advantage of. Since robocalling is only illegal under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act if the call attempts to sell something, scammers have changed their tactics to skirt regulation. Most frequently, scammers have begun to use AI to impersonate people’s loved ones to acquire wire transfers and other forms of payment under various false pretenses, including but not limited to emergency medical care, bail money, and car accidents.

The Telephone Consumer Act does not say that robocalling, which does not solicit a good or service, is entirely legal, though. While the placement of calls by computers may technically be permitted, as long as these calls do not attempt to sell a good or service, many of the tactics used by those who employ robocalls are not. Since the use of AI to impersonate people is such a new application of AI technology, prior regulation of it is limited. It is illegal in multiple states to use AI impersonations as authentic content. However, parodies that are created with the use of AI are legal.

As technology and AI, in particular, continue to develop, more regulation on robocalls and uses for AI is more than likely. One recent update to robocall regulation is the Telemarketing Sales Rule, which enables the targeted party to stop robocalls by stating that they “want…to end” the call, they “don’t wish to receive calls” from this party[7], or their “number is on the national do not call registry”[8]. Despite the continued development of regulations on spam and scam calls, robocallers will almost certainly continue to attempt to find and exploit loopholes in regulations.

Since it seems likely that robocalls are not going anywhere anytime soon, there are some recommended tactics to lower your risk of being scammed. Firstly, do not answer calls from unknown or suspicious phone numbers. If this option is impossible, do not be the first to speak when answering an unknown or suspicious phone call. This forces the caller to speak first and lowers your risk of being recorded for AI voice scams. Finally, come up with a code word that you share with your close friends and family[9]. That way, if an AI voice scam ever targets you, you can ask for the code word to verify the caller's identity[10].

I brought unhappiness to more lives than one. I felt something must be done. Was that why? A means of clearing my conscience? Or perhaps, out of a sort of scholarly instinct? While the boy slept his long sleep, I hid the results of my research inside him, transplanting the data to where it might best serve a purpose. In fact, I would like to believe… Maybe he can set things right. A boy like him who touches so many hearts–he could open the right door, and save all those people whose lives I managed to ruin.

Ansem the Wise told Aqua he felt terrible about ruining “countless” people’s lives. When I first played BBSFM, I couldn’t tell if he simply felt guilty for his apprentices’ actions, which he blamed himself for…or something else he personally did that we never saw on-screen. Yeah. The data that Ansem hid inside Sora is a secret related to their resurrection. When Ansem became DiZ and worked from the shadows, he did research on the heart and emotion, but he hid the conclusion of his particular findings inside Sora. Apparently, Ansem the Wise did research from the shadows while he was DiZ, and then hid the results of that research inside of Sora. This research was supposed to be “the key” to saving everyone, detailing the way to restore lost hearts. And the nature of this data was supposed to be a major focus of “a future title” aka BBSV2.

The wise man who once ruled over Radiant Garden. His apprentices stole his research into the heart and brought chaos to the worlds. The real Ansem expired while trying to thwart Organization XIII’s dark plans. He has left some sort of “data” inside Sora’s memories.

And according to the journal in KH3D, the data was left inside of Sora’s memories.

This is probably why the (original) plot of KH3 was simply about Sora traveling to various Disney worlds, seemingly with no real purpose. Thanks to Ansem’s data, Sora knew he had the latent ability to restore lost hearts. Apparently, this knowledge was put into his subconscious, inside his sleeping memories. He didn’t know how to use it consciously, so he was traveling around, looking for something that would give him some kind of “Eureka” moment.

In search of a place to proceed with my research and planning away from prying eyes, I found myself in “Twilight Town.” It is a quiet village, forgotten in the chasm between light and darkness. I situated myself in the basement of an abandoned mansion standing beyond the woods.

My underground research resulted in one new discovery after another. When a Heartless is born, the body and soul left behind are reborn into this world as a different being. They possess different intentions than their Heartless brethren, and while it is unclear what these sentient “things” are after, it would appear they are responsible for much bedlam in the world. My erstwhile friend the King and his subjects, along with a hero wielding the Keyblade, are battling the Heartless even as a new threat approaches. This new threat…they have given themselves a fitting name, I suppose.These non-beings: “Nobodies.”

DiZ’s research was done after he returned from the Realm of Darkness, while he was staying inside the Haunted Mansion. He learned about what Nobodies were in this way. So…I think this might be what he felt so guilty about. He might have sacrificed children in the name of research during this time period. It definitely sounded like he felt bad about stuff he did that had nothing to do with Roxas, Xion, or Namine. He felt bad about that, too. Just not at the time he put the data inside Sora.

So yeah. Ansem’s data is the reason Roxas, Xion, and Namine were able to be brought back. But I don’t think that was his intention. I think KH3 changed what Ansem’s Code was about, and it originally was something completely different, relating to the research he conducted while he was DiZ.

Ansem quietly shook his head. “Naminé, Roxas, and Xemnas… The Nobodies of those with strong hearts are peculiar beings. My—that is, our theories proved fruitless. Coming into contact with a strong heart transforms a world. And not just worlds, but people themselves—and even Nobodies.”

This is what DiZ tells Riku towards the end of KH2, in the novels. When Ansem put his data inside of Sora, he was asleep. Before Sora woke up, DiZ was still telling Roxas he had no right to exist and taunting him. His original theory about Nobodies was wrong. And he said “our” theories. So it might be that DiZ’s dark research at the Old Mansion was done with Ansem Seeker of Darkness’s participation. DiZ was undercover, after all, so ASoD wouldn’t have known it was him.

Basically, I didn’t get the impression that Ansem wanted to atone for how he treated Roxas and Namine at the point he put his research results inside of Sora. He still hated Nobodies at that point, thought they had no right to exist, and that they didn’t have hearts.

Within Sora’s heart are three compartmentalized “boxes,” each containing the heart of another. One box holds Roxas. Another holds a second heart that has been with Sora nearly as long. The third has held its heart for much longer. These hearts have melded with Sora’s and no longer have voices of their own. Any attempt to mechanically extract them could prove as dire for Sora as what caused him to become a Heartless in the first place.

First, a vessel for each heart must be readied. Then, a spark of some sort is required to induce its waking. Obviously, the ideal solution is to restore each heart to its own body, but (whatever the case for the two unknown individuals) Roxas possesses no such thing. The same is true for Naminé, who we believe resides in Kairi’s heart. Still, if alternate bodies can be secured for them, all their hearts require to be awakened is that “spark"—people they cared for and who cared for them, who can show them the way home.

If I had to guess, I’d say that most of the stuff about Ansem’s Code was only thought up at the last minute for KH3. After BBSV2 was cancelled, they changed the data’s meaning, and waaaaaaaay oversimplified it. Like the stuff about Sora’s heart having compartmentalized “boxes” for Roxas and Xion’s hearts. Why would Ansem’s research results be about that?

The bolded part is what I think Ansem’s Code was really about originally. When DiZ left his data inside of Sora, I don’t think he thought that applied to Nobodies. But by the end of KH2, he felt bad for how he treated Roxas and Namine and thought the data applied to them, too. At some time, during the events of KH2 after Sora woke up, Ansem changed his view on Roxas and Namine and the Organization. His actions during KH2, showing how he changed, were most likely another blank period to be shown in BBSV2.

Ansem the Wise was just another casualty of the mishandled Dark Seeker Saga.

Day significantly improved (though I remain annoyed about the same thing that drove me nuts earlier). Had a meeting this morning about the research I've been participating in, and I felt really bad, because even though it was pushed back a couple weeks, I hadn't made any new progress in that time. However, everyone else was not only understanding of my busyness, they were impressed I'd started anything at all, and kind of looked to me as the de facto owner of this thing. When I said I was eventually going to run out of steps I know how to do, everyone turned to office crush #1 and just kind of assumed he'd take over the analysis from here, which would be typical (as a data scientist who used to be in the clinical department, he's most of our research brains, although the group is slowly expanding). After the meeting, I said something along the lines of, "I hope I can still help with some parts?" And he enthusiastically said, "Yeah, of course!" I was very unsure how literally to take that, because I don't know a ton with stats or R (though learning a lot on both fronts), and the assumption from the beginning was I might get to participate a little with direction of the project, but he'd probably have to actually run the analyses. I panicked when I initially thought the one clinician involved intended for me to do that, but later said I could do it as long as somebody (ideally OC1) could tag-team it with me. Well, anyway, I was over talking to him at the end of the day, letting him vent about some stress and following up on something he'd popped by my desk earlier to ask about, and when I asked if he'd meant it, about me staying involved with the analyses for this research, his response was "Absolutely" and walking me through an example of the test I should use, and what steps he'd typically follow to figure out how to present the results, etc. I got nervous about the sheer number of things I don't know or haven't done before, but he assured me the hard part is the data cleaning/recoding, and that's the part I already (mostly) know how to do. He'd already updated my Bitbucket permissions, so I can now actually work on scripts with other people instead of just reading their code and saving my own work to an individual repository. I'm freaking excited!!!!! This is going to be a HUGE stretch for me, and I'm going to have a million questions along the way - I already warned OC1 of that, lol, and cautioned him that he has a lot more faith in me than I probably deserve just yet. But he's been truly awesome about teaching me, even though doing it this way is so much more effort than just doing it himself. I remember back when I was first getting to know him, and I'd complain to him about things or ask questions and his instant response would be to try to fix it for me... I always appreciated it, but I'd get frustrated, because I wanted to learn. But he (along with quite a few others) has decided that I'm worth investing in. And considering my particular aspirations, that's a really big deal. Not to mention, I love learning from OC1, because he always makes it fun and I like spending time with him! I guess the great thing about this is that no matter how far I get, it will be more regardless than anybody expected of me, so it's pretty much bound to be a win!

Homecoming ~Morenatsu Revisited~ (Release #1)

Happy holidays, everyone!

It's been a long development process, but we've finally made it! Me and the rest of Stormsinger Studios are proud to bring you the first release of Homecoming!

After some extensive pre-release testing and a stream preview courtesy of our friend Deckerlink, we feel it's finally ready for the public. A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into this project, and I personally couldn't be more proud of the results so far. We hope all of you enjoy the experience as much as we've enjoyed making it!

As stated in previous posts, Homecoming is a radical reimagining of Morenatsu, so please understand what it actually is. Going in, be prepared for many in-progress elements, especially on the art side of things. Homecoming is a ground-up remake of the Morenatsu we love, and many artistic liberties have been taken with the source material. We know that isn't to everyone's preference, but the intent of Homecoming is to provide a new, updated experience for old fans and newcomers to Morenatsu. For most of us on the development team, Morenatsu was a first experience coming to terms with who we are, and we want to provide the best experience possible for people who are in the same situation as we were all those years ago. If even one person plays our game and learns to love themselves for who they are on the inside, well...I consider that a victory.

1. What is Homecoming?

A. Homecoming is a ground-up recoding of what we've already finished for Revisited. We're also increasing the game's resolution to a widescreen format, so everything should look cleaner and more organized. Essentially, think of this as a soft reboot for the Revisited project and a remake for Morenatsu as a whole.

2. Why stop developing the old version?

A. We believed it was a necessary step forward. Many issues started mounting as we developed Revisited, such as pressure from hardcore fans of the original to not change, disregard for the hard work we've put into the project, and resulting bloated code/file size trying to accommodate everyone. Starting fresh gives us the opportunity to make the experience we can feel proud of, ensuring every aspect stays consistent and the best it can be.

3. Will this change the story?

A. Yes, quite a bit, but ideally still keeping enough that it "feels" like Morenatsu. Revisited originally started out as a project to bring Morenatsu to a more accessible platform and correct grammatical errors. Along the way, it morphed into a project that tried to update the stories and give them more emotional depth. The same quality of writing you see in Revisited will continue on into Homecoming. We are embracing the “adaptation” aspect of the project, though. This means that areas where we feel there needs to be a change, such as the inclusion of female sprites, we will be making adjustments. Entire routes from the original are being rewritten from scratch to match the quality of routes released later in the game's lifespan (Kounosuke, Shun, Kouya).

4. You keep using the word "adaptation". What do you mean by that?

A. Like when your favorite movie gets a modern remake, or an old classic television show gets a new revival, we see Homecoming as an opportunity to remake Morenatsu and give another spin on the classic storylines.

5. What does this mean for us who want the old art, music, and storylines?

We're making Homecoming because we love Morenatsu and feel another artistic direction will achieve the themes we're aiming for. We're not trying to spite anyone, as rumors have stated.

Other projects have popped up who meet the "don't change anything" expectations better than we ever could. 6. When can we expect updates for Homecoming?

A. We're all very busy people. Even this first release took a lot longer than I anticipated. Since we're not on any payment plans like Patreon (and have no desire to be), game updates are going to be on the old fashioned "when it's done" schedule. We'll try to keep you up to date in places like FA and Twitter, but due to our crazy schedules it would be foolish to force strict deadlines.

7. What has changed going from Revisited to Homecoming?

A. Homecoming aims to remake Morenatsu with a different goal. We desire to make a game that connects with people personally, makes them feel like things will get better in life...because eventually everything does. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and we're restructuring Morenatsu to better achieve that theme.

Coming from Revisited, Homecoming will feature new sprites, CGs, music, sound effects...basically, new everything! The resolution has increased to a widescreen format, so everything has the chance to look better and feel more modern. As stated before, the storylines have been updated to aim for a theme of "Hope". Finally, most Gallery features from Revisited will be ported over to Homecoming over time, though they won't necessarily be there at first.

8. Why is the protagonist an Arctic Fox now?

A. I get this one a lot, so I'll copy/paste my most recent answer to this question: I've been pretty apprehensive about the species change (and writing out humans in general) because I knew it would be hands down the most controversial aspect of the game. So far it's been very polarized, which I expected, but I've also seen plenty of people come around to the idea as the days progress.

I wanted to remove humans from the setting because it does two things for me: It makes worldbuilding easier with not having to explain why a vastly inferior species (humans, as written in the OG) are able to coexist with superpowered beastmen (allowing me to better justify reasons why these characters would love Hiroyuki in the first place), and the concept of "if everyone is furry, nobody is", which is to say that it's up to the reader to interpret everyone the way they wish. If you want to see the characters as abstracted humans, then you're more than able to. If you want to see them as humanoid representations of their species, you're more than welcome to as well.

In short, I made the decision to remove humans from the setting because I believe it gives me more room to write interesting characters and scenarios. It provides a different perspective on things that the original game didn't have, and I believe that's reason enough to justify the change. Keep in mind, Homecoming is a "remake" and not everything is going to be (or even intends to be) exactly the way it was in the source material.

== Additional response from Frostclaw: One of the biggest things people tend to ask is "Why an arctic fox?" and though Dzahn answered the reason we made him a kemono, it wasn't exactly stated why we made him an arctic fox in particular. The truth is, we were looking for a species that wasn't represented as much in Morenatsu. Ultimately, fox was chosen, which seemed to go well, as foxes generally tend to be cute, albeit rather silly. Given that it went with Hiroyuki's personality, it just seemed to fit. However, the suggestion to make him an arctic fox was mine, for a few reasons:

1. The yuki portion of his name. Yuki, as some people may or may not be aware, is Japanese for snow. 2. Arctic foxes are an uncommon sight in Japan (though you can see a few at Zao Fox Village). They aren't native to the region. 3. Hiroyuki is extremely sensitive to the heat. Since arctic foxes have a thicker coat of fur, it fits well to make Hiroyuki an arctic fox.

As it stands, Hiroyuki is a set species, and there are no plans to allow for a species change (as that would require intensive programming and rewrites of story elements). Additionally, his kitsune heritage also will be playing an important part to the story. I can't say much about it now, but please look forward to it sometime in the future.

[…] So deeply entrenched was this association that in her book Recoding Gender, Janet Abbate quotes one female programmer who recalls being astonished even at the suggestion that the situation could be otherwise: “It never occurred to any of us that computer programming would eventually become something that was thought of as a men’s field.”

Of course, the use of female labor to perform routine tasks was not peculiar to electronic computing […]. The combination of mechanization, division of labor, and a reliance on low-skilled (or at least low-wage) workers is the essence of industrialization, and in the United States at least, women were the first factory workers [see Thomas Dublin, Transforming Women’s Work]. This was especially true of the “information factories” that emerged in the post–Civil War period. A growing number of information-centric organizations were made possible not only by innovations in information technology, such as typewriters, tabulating machines, mechanical calculators, and vertical filing cabinets, but also by the mass mobilization of low-wage, low-skilled female labor.

[…] As more and more powerful computers were developed, the significance of software became more apparent. This newfound appreciation for computer programmers, combined with an increasing demand for their services, was accompanied by an equally dramatic rise in their salaries. The elevation of both the status and pay scale of computer programmers attracted a growing number of men to the occupation. Some of these men drifted in from disciplines with intellectual affinities to computing, such as mathematics, philosophy, or electrical engineering. Others entered via corporate computerization efforts and had backgrounds in traditional business specialties such as accounting. In either case, these recent converts to computing brought with them the traditions, practices, and status hierarchies of their former disciplines, often attempting to re-create them in their newly discovered discipline. For these aspiring male programming professionals, the lingering association of computer programming with the feminized activities of “coding,” corporate data processing, and other forms of clerical work was a source of perpetual career anxiety.

[…] As Susan Douglas and Kristin Haring have convincingly demonstrated, many of the characteristics and practices that are commonly assumed to have originated in 1980s hacker culture were actually well defined a half-century earlier by ham radio operators […] Douglas in particular ties these practices to the late 19th-and 20th-century “crisis of masculinity,” in which young men, struggling to define themselves in a white-collar information economy in which physical strength and courage were largely irrelevant, turned to the mastery of technology as a means of demonstrating their fitness and potential. The adolescent male hacker introduced yet another layer of masculine identities and practices to the increasingly male-dominated computing subculture.

What is most significant about hacker culture is that it was hegemonic. This appears to have been a particular problem for female programmers. Figure 3 shows [that] female enrollments in undergraduate computer science climbed steadily until 1982, when they suddenly started declining. When we overlay these figures with a representation of the rising number of media mentions of the word “hacker” we can visualize an alternative explanation. The two graphs form an almost perfect inverse of one another. As the hacker stereotype came to dominate the popular image of what computer programmers do and who they are, they marked computing as an almost exclusively male domain.
