Oh the thing about Mayoi's name is super fun actually. It's even mentioned by Alkaloid when they first meet (I think it was Tatsumi who pointed it out because Aira was having trouble reading it) that Mayoi's surname has a very uncommon reading to it due to what the anon said (how 礼 usually is read as "rei" not "aya"). Also the second kanji aside from rapids, current or shoal can also mean chance, opportunity or position. So in a way it is possible that Ayase is meant to be read something like "a chance/opportunity to be grateful".
And like you pointed out Mayoi is not written in kanji which means the meaning is left to be more vague than usual, and it can mean "to be lost". Usually though "to be lost" is written as 迷う(mayou) (as a verb) while, 迷い (mayoi) (which is what most likely what Mayoi's name refers to) is the noun version of the verb and most usually means "hesitation" or "doubt". And I don't know I think that between that and the surname I think it's pretty neat how it can be linked to how alkaloid decides say regularly "thank you" to Mayoi just for existing since she's not really used to being thanked for much.
Sorry for just rambling, that name anon just ignited something in me because I love looking into etymology and how some times it can relate to a character's personality or character arc.
Also fun fact: another person with a strange reading, although this time with his first name, is Mitsuru. Usually 光 is read on its own as "hikari" (which means "light") but his name is read as "mitsusru" which usually is written as 満 or 充 which means "to fill" or "to be satisfied". Also, in Obbligato Jun also mentions that "Saegusa" is also a hard to read surname and he can't even read it at the time but I don't know how much I can trust that one since I haven't really looked into Ibara's name that much. (God this got way longer than I thought it would I'm sorry)
ooh dont apologize i love learning about this stuff!!
