i want more. more of the universe. more time with you. you're like the best person i've ever met. no. i'm with you whatever happens. better now that you're here. my person's a bit different. we're not letting you go. you are not doing this. we were worried about you. i just missed her. i never stopped to think... it felt cruel. to be shown something i couldn't have anymore. it felt like: i'd rather not have known. i'd rather not have met her cuz having met her and then, being without her, was worse. are you gonna? stay? yeah definitely. i'm not ready to let you go yet. because i thought we're friends. wwtdd doctor it's okay. alright... i miss you too... you okay? i am now. i missed you too. have you ever told her? told her what? how you feel about her. dunno what you mean. yeah, you do. is it that obvious? maybe not to a good hearted weirdo. but i've spent 4 years travelling the world with you. i saw it then. you didn't half cane looking at her hologram. i didn't... i mean i'm not... i mean i haven't been... she's just... i don't know what to do dan. i haven't told anyone. not even myself. not a bad date am i? no. why not? no, course... ... sure. make a wish and skim it. i don't want it to end.

So okay, I haven't seen the commentary about Fourteen returning to Fifteen once he's processed his trauma to be "reabsorbed" or whatever, but if that's how it's gonna go, then yeah. Okay, I can see why they did this.
Doctor Who has been such a fucking insane whirlwind of loss and trauma pretty much since Journey's End when the Doctor lost his lover and his best friend. Tentoo and Rose are happily married in Pete's World. That Doctor gets to actively live the happiest he's ever been every single day, but this Doctor had to keep going.
Eleven lost the Ponds. Twelve lost Clara and Bill. These characters effectively die, which is why they're mentioned directly. And exemplified by the Toymaker, these are big losses. Yaz+Co. didn't get even an inkling of a mention because, quite frankly, they weren't. They all just got to go back home like companions used to do all the time. It was kind of a big deal that so many companions had such tragic, permanent, traumatic endings. So yeah, it makes sense that the Doctor would need to take time to process this.
(That and the Flux thing, apparently, which - uh - I guess falls under the same umbrella.)
Fourteen is incredibly vulnerable. He's open and raw, and he needs to be in order to be the Doctor to process these things. It makes strategic story sense to have the Doctor break in half to allow part of him to retire and process while the other part of him keeps going, because (like with Tentoo), the show must go on -- he can't actually stop.
Having David Tennant's face as Fourteen makes a lot of strategic sense, too. Not only is DT a fan favourite, but his relationship with Donna is the most familial of relationships he's had. Some fans may wonder again why Yaz wasn't who he'd go to, but it has to be noted that they made Yaz a romantic interest and that is not what this Doctor wants or needs right now. That's why they've established Fourteen as (likely) gay. That's why he's calling Rose Noble his niece and Shaun his brother-in-law. He's effectively rehabilitating with his sister, and that's kind of cool.
I do understand the tragedy of Donna's ending was appealing to many viewers, but it's been 15 years. That's long enough for her to get a better ending to her story that doesn't just involve winning the lottery. Her family and how she cares for people who need it are Donna's greatest strengths. Having Donna get her memory back but not become an all-knowing DoctorDonna hybrid is sending a kind message of hope that I think this world needs right now, to be honest.
RTD has done this, in part, to allow for the show to return to being more lighthearted and about hope than it has for a long time. It's saying that it's okay to take a break, but also acknowledges that the Doctor - as a show and as an almost supernatural being - has to carry on as well. It's a soft reboot with acknowledgement to the past without having to view it as a burden, so I get that.
I've seen a lot of people immediately compare this ending to Tentoo/Rose, though, and I don't know if I agree. This isn't a Doctor creating a version of himself to be with a lover as a human, to live the one, singular life he couldn't otherwise have. He didn't bi-regenerate out of love or fear of losing his lover. His loss of regenerations and ability to age as Tentoo is really important to their story, and this is not true for Fourteen. He's still full Time Lord - and if the commentary is true - will eventually reunite with himself. That's not at all the same. Instead, this is the Doctor many years after a traumatic experience using a magical way to get his break and travel, too.
As well, the Doctor was in love with Rose. He had to tear his heart out and leave her in a different universe to let her go. That would not have happened with a bi-regenerated Doctor sharing the same universe. The two Doctors would have had to create a copy of Rose (much like these two had to do so with the TARDIS) in order to be happy. It's not like Donna, because Donna can be a sister to two identical brothers and it's not weird.
(That's if you don't count polyamory, but that would never happen in the show.)
I hope that they use this soft reboot to help move on from past traumas in a healthy way. I hope that Fourteen with Donna does help Fifteen become more of a positive Doctor than even Thirteen was, who was secretly dealing with so much angst all the time.
I do adore, absolutely, that the Doctor did acknowledge his favourite people. River Song and Adric were mentioned as important and lost. Sarah Jane and Rose were explicitly said to be loved. It was less than I was hoping for, but also exactly what I think should happen if they're trying to use this special as a way to finally, realistically move on and start something fresh, new and positive.
So yeah, I guess I'll keep watching to see what happens next.

still thinking about yaz travelling with 10 so heres what i have so far:
she runs into him in london coming out of an interview for unit or smth, a couple of months after potd. for him it's in the gap between waters of mars and end of time. hes So Messed Up and yaz is like oh i know this. this is familiar. this might not be my doctor but,,,,this is my doctor
hes like oh what year is this? i was aiming for- and shes like dont ask me i keep getting it mixed up too. and hes like thats a bit of a strange thing to say, do we know each other? you seem familiar. shes like yes we've met
she surmises he doesnt have company bc hes all high on ginger and not trying to hide it. then shes like youre not flying like this, can i take you anywhere bc this is a fucking tardis and a fucking doctor available to her and how many more times is she gonna get this opportunity? never? once, and she has to wait for it 40 more years? no way is she just gonna walk past and go home. shes gonna do what shes always done and buy herself a little more time
she lets herself into the tardis, too sure of herself for him to really do anything abt it, as she asks "where did you say you were going?" he closes the doors "eternity"
"eternity?" she looks at him "is that a euphemism"
"it's a planet. in the larger magellanic cloud. thought maybe i should check up. sorry but who are you, exactly?"
shes like yes. um. yasmin khan. im a friend. as she stares at the tardis in wonder like the first time she walked in. and the tardis lights up bc she doesnt care about linear time and she loves yaz. so yaz starts putting in coordinates. she has to search for some of the controls bc the console is different but it's not too bad
"well thats great to hear, yasmin khan. can never have enough of those"
"larger magellanic cloud" she says looking at the navigation on one of the screens. "dyou ever think it's maybe a bit weird to name things in space after colonists?"
"well depends whos doing the naming. we dont call it that"
"no? what do timelords call it"
"and seeing as it were human colonists who settled there, maybe the name fits"
"there goes my faith in humanity" and she pulls the takeoff lever
the flight is bumpy as ever and when muscle memory fails her three times in a row shes like oh my god WHERE is your conceptual geometer and instead of pointing it out to her he just walks over and adjusts it and the way he does it is so familiar she has to blink hard a couple times
they might or might not end up on eternity but they certainly run promptly into trouble. yaz is a bit mysterious to him, a bit suspicious maybe because she wont answer any question directly but shes able to anticipate him so well that teamwork is pretty much seamless and theyre both running away from something so their motives line up and their need for something fun and exciting and distracting to happen too and also hes lonely and despite the way she basically hijacked his tardis he likes yaz bc of course he does
they match up timelines while hiding from guards, whispering about 1969 and weeping angels and "oh THATS why i dont remember, two doctors in the same place same time" and he figures out yaz travelled with future him
yaz drops a "she" and hes like "she??" and shes like oh shit should i not have said that and hes like no it's fine. and then hes like "does it suit me?" and she does Not manage to blink the tears away at that one
"is it something i said?" and then the guards spot them and hes like "RUN"
the ease with which he takes her hand as they run is lovely and horrible at the same time. she lets herself be dragged along while she thinks about the way 13 shook them off almost any time any of them touched her
a week & 8 planets in and shes been held by him more than shes been held by 13
they become buddies in like the way that you can sometimes become buddies with the younger sibling of your best friend or something. hes probably too heartbroken and messed up to develop a real crush but it's still yaz right? you know the way 10 kisses claras hand in the day of the doctor? that vibe. and yaz, with the benefit of.........foresight? hindforesight? picks up that vibe here that she couldnt with 13. bc 10 is young and a fountain of emotion compared to 13
my yaz is pretty firmly a lesbian so even if she was gonna get over the like very recent heartbreak and younger sibling vibes then still nothing was gonna happen here but theyre also both not in a place where they could cope with another heartbreak like that so like,,,,,,they both know, and they both know that they both know, but they dont need anything more so it just kinda makes them better buddies. sometimes youre a little bit in love with your friend in a way you dont want to act on. just another thing to bond over
and for yaz it's maybe a little bit healing to get 10s adoration like that
at some point the fact of meeting in the wrong order also comes up of course. yaz is like it's a little bit complicated, i dont know what i can say and 10 is like meh follow your instincts, youve got good ones i can tell. and if theres really something you shouldnt say i'll stop you
yaz is like does that happen a lot, as a time traveller i mean, meeting people in the wrong order? and 10 is like [THINKING ABOUT RIVER] "from time to time"
i just think theres a lot of potential for fun with the two of them. both of them running from the inevitable. not wanting to lose who they are, wanting more time as this version of themselves
yaz will learn so much about the doctor that retroactively contextualises a lot of 13, which i think could help in getting a little bit of closure. and theres so much river echoes sort of going in both ways. yaz flying the tardis with 10 because she learnt with 13, river later flying with 11
i also think seeing the way 10 is about his principles compared to how 13 was would be interesting. she would see a lot of the ways the doctor has grown up. yaz got to see so much of 12 in 13s trauma but she never got to see how 12 learnt and grew to become the 13 she loved. i think it would be special to see 10. see how they used to be. and also slap him on the fingers sometimes when he needs it
i dont know how to end it yet because that will just be more tragedy. 10 still ends up in end of time. yaz still ends up home. but maybe they can help each other a little bit in the time inbetween, even if the end theyre running from still comes to them both

"The Loneliest Time"
Summary: Rose Temple-Noble arrives back from a day at UNIT, with a certain freelancer in-tow. However, a chat with Donna Noble may just be what Yasmin Khan needs…
~~~~~~~
Read on AO3.
~~~~~~~
‘Mum?’
‘I’m in the kitchen, love!’
Donna took a sip from her mug of tea. It was a quiet Friday afternoon, and the sun was already beginning to dip low in the sky. The January weather was never great, but today had actually been fairly decent.
A few seconds later, Rose stepped into the kitchen, followed by a young woman that Donna didn’t recognise; she had long hair that was tied into an elaborate up-do, and was wearing a leather jacket, jeans and boots. She wore a blue earring in the shape of a heart.
Donna’s daughter swung her rucksack off her shoulders, before leaning down to give her mum a quick kiss on the head.
‘Had a good time at UNIT?’
‘It was fantastic!’ Rose said. ‘Oh, this is Yaz, by the way. She’s the freelancer I said about…’
Donna flashed a quick smile at the young woman, and stood up.
‘Thanks for showing Rose around,’ she said, shaking Yaz by the hand. ‘Cuppa?’
‘Ta,’ said Yaz, in a warm Sheffield accent. ‘Milk, no sugar.’
Donna bustled around the kettle, as the two younger woman sat down around the table.
‘So… Yasmin Khan, isn’t it?’ Donna said, popping a tea-bag into the mug and filling it with water. ‘Rose has told me a lot about you-’
‘Mum!’ exclaimed the teenager. Donna didn’t even need to turn to know that her daughter’s face was flushing. But, if she was going to animatedly about the “pretty Yorkshirewoman” everytime she arrived back from UNIT, Donna was going to notice.
‘Oh, relax, love,’ Donna chuckled, as she turned and placed the mug in front of Yaz. ‘Nothing bad, of course. You’ve been working at UNIT for a year now, right?’
Yaz nodded.
‘That’s right. I… well, it’s rather a long story.’
‘Well, I’ve got time. But Rose…’
‘Mum!’
‘Homework?’
‘Oh, alright,’ Rose chuckled, with a fond roll of her eyes. ‘I’ll be upstairs. Thanks for dropping me back, Yaz.’
‘No problem; glad you had a good time today.’
Rose grabbed her bag and hurried upstairs.
‘You must be very proud,’ Yaz said, with a smile. ‘She’s gonna take on the world, that one.’
‘True,’ Donna said, cupping her mug in her hand and grinning. ‘Earth won’t know what’s hit it.’
‘Speaking of earth… you’ve travelled to other planets, eh? Tegan told me.’
‘That tattletale!’ Donna laughed. ‘Yeah, I’ve been around.’
Yaz nodded, and seemed to take a breath before continuing.
‘You used to travel with the Doctor, then?’
Donna nodded.
‘A while back but… yeah. Why?’
‘Just…’ Yaz trailed off, looking a tad uncomfortable. ‘Well, I…’
‘Did one of your friends travel with the Doctor?’ Donna said. ‘The Toymaker mentioned -who was it?- Amy, Clara and Bill.’
Yaz looked at her.
‘No,’ she said, slowly. ‘I… I travelled with the Doctor until about a year ago.’
Donna blinked.
‘Oh,’ the redhead said, placing her mug gently on the coaster. ‘I… I didn’t know that. Was this during the flux?’
Yaz’s brow crinkled.
‘This… toymaker person mentioned the Flux but not Graham, Ryan… Dan? Not me?’
Donna shook her head.
‘Well, I think he was trying to upset the Doctor,’ she said, gently. ‘That’s why he mentioned all those other people.’
Yaz took a sip from her mug.
‘Er… how is the Doctor, by the way?’ she said, slowly. ‘I… I haven’t seen them for a while, like I said.’
‘He lives with me and the family now. Didn’t… didn’t Kate mention things?’
‘I think she wasn’t sure how to put it,’ Yaz said. ‘She did mention that the Doctor appeared on earth again recently but…’
Yaz blinked quickly.
‘Why…’ the Yorkshirewoman whispered, voice quavering. ‘Did I… what did I do wrong?’
Donna’s eyes widened.
‘She couldn’t stay for me…’ Yaz continued, and felt her heart plummet at the grief in the young woman’s voice. ‘She said she couldn’t fix herself to anyone or any place… and… and now…’
Sobs wracked Yaz’s body, and Donna immediately scooted her chair around the table, pulling the young woman into a hug. As soon as the redhead had put her arms around her, Yaz broke down completely, giving a miserable hiccupping sob. Donna held her like that for several moments, and she could feel the Yorkshirewoman trembling slightly as she cried.
‘Was… was I not enough?’
‘Don’t you dare think like that,’ Donna said, pulling away slightly and resting her hands on Yaz’s shoulders. ‘Not ever, you understand?’
Yaz blinked, nodded, and wiped her eyes with her hand.
‘S-sorry,’ she said, quickly. ‘I should’ve-’
‘No need to apologise,’ Donna said. ‘You’re not the first person I’ve met who fell for the Doctor.’
‘Martha and Rose?’
‘Yep. And others too, by the sounds of it. He sometimes slips up and mentions River.’
‘But not me?’
‘Not yet,’ Donna said. ‘Maybe the wound is still too painful.’
‘I suppose,’ Yaz said, with a sad chuckle.
‘Hey, I can always introduce you to-’
‘No,’ Yaz said, quietly. ‘I do appreciate the offer, Donna. But… the Doctor I… the Doctor I fell in love with is now gone. She’s not coming back. And… I’ve gotten used to that. The two of us decided that we wouldn’t say goodbye so… yeah.’
‘I’m sure she’s proud of you. So am I, for what it’s worth.’
Yaz smiled.
‘Thanks, Donna. Er… please don’t tell Tegan,’ Yaz said, with a chuckle. ‘Her and Nyssa are already acting like aunts to me as it is. Well, everyone at the support meetings has basically adopted me.’
Donna chuckled, and squeezed Yaz’s hand.
‘My lips are sealed.’
‘Hi Donna,’ came a familiar voice from the hallway. ‘Whose is that bike outside? Is Mel round again…’
The Doctor appeared in the doorway, his spiky hair wobbly slightly.
The moment he saw who was sat at Donna’s kitchen table, the time lord’s mouth promptly dropped open. He stood in the kitchen doorway, blinking stupidly.
‘Er… Dave, my next door neighbour,’ Donna said, quickly, gesturing to the Doctor. ‘Dave, this is Yasmin; she popped round to talk about an old friend.’
Yaz smiled at the man, before looking back at Donna.
‘Thanks for the tea and sympathy, Donna,’ Yaz said. She quickly downed the rest of her mug and got to her feet, passing the Doctor through the doorway. ‘Nice to meet you, Dave.’
‘Y-yeah,’ the Doctor said, staring after her. ‘Nice to meet you too.’
There was the soft click of the front door shutting behind Yaz.
The Time Lord was still standing in the doorway, staring down the corridor after the Yorkshirewoman.
Taking her friend gently by the hand, Donna guided the stunned time lord into a seat. He stared, mouth still hanging numbly open.
‘Now…’ she said, softly. She squeezed her friend’s hand. ‘I’ll get you a mug of tea, and maybe we can have a chat about that young woman who just left…’
~~~~~~~
Thanks for reading, everyone; consider this my fix-it fic for Yaz not being mentioned with the Doctor's other romantic interests during "The Giggle" (I'm fine, I'm fine, WOULD IT HAVE KILLED RTD TO MENTION HER ALONGSIDE RIVER AND ROSE?!- honestly I'm fine…)
I don’t have a specific prompt in mind but do you have any ideas for Ten/Fourteen and Phileas meeting each other? Chaos travelers dynamic! Wahoo!
Have I ever mentioned that I actually wanted to write a short fic where Phileas and friends run into the Doctor, Martha, and Donna for a little adventure?
Well, this isn't the same thing, but I think this might be a fun idea to work with!
Let's go with Fourteen for this, since I like making content for them. (I don't remember the exact years that Madam Vastra lived in Victorian London, but I'm not here for accuracy, Fourteen is gonna meet a man who is technically a book character).
On with the fic!
--
The Doctor smiled as they passed through the streets of Victorian London. Yes, they'd been here so many times over the years, but it was always nice to stop by for a visit. They did have friends who lived in this era after all.
They had heard the most curious news from Madam Vastra when they had come over for a long overdue tea party between them and their friends. She had told him about a man who has been considered the first Englishman to travel the world in eighty days.
It had taken the Doctor a moment to register who that was, and they had gotten excited. They'd never been able to catch any of the exciting trip of Phileas Fogg before! They always seemed to land at the wrong time, just missing him and his friends in their bigger destination spots.
They wondered if maybe he was still here in London, that there was a chance that they could catch him. The Doctor knew that not too long after his return to London, Fogg and his friends had taken off to find an ancient sea creature.
The Doctor walked about, trying to find the typical locations that Phileas Fogg frequented and soon gave up. They needed a break, maybe a drink? It was a bit chilly, a nice cuppa would do! And when was the last time they'd stopped in Victorian tea house, or even a coffee house?
Hmmm... had it been with Yaz? They couldn't remember, but they found themself entered a coffee house he found just a moment later and glanced about. It wasn't too busy here, seeing as it was the late afternoon.
However, someone caught his eye.
Seated at a table by himself, looking over a newspaper with a cup of tea before him, along with a small tray with all manner of things to prepare said cup, was the Doctor.
Well.
No.
Not the Doctor, but someone who looked just like him. Madam Vastra had smiled and made a comment that Fogg was a man with a face that the Doctor would recognize the moment they spotted it. She wasn't wrong.
Grinning, the Doctor approached. "Is this seat taken?"
Fogg glanced up, opening his mouth to say something, but stopped and stared instead. The Doctor's grin grew as they winked. "Like lookin' in a mirror, isn't it?"
"I... is this a trick?" Fogg asked, nervous, but strangely fascinated.
"No trick, just the universe having a laugh, I suppose." They scratched the back of their head, ah, an old habit from their previous time with this face. "Are you Phileas Fogg?"
Fogg nodded, clearing his throat. "Yes, yes I am. I am to guess you've heard of me from recent exploits?"
"Oh, yes!" The Doctor plopped down in the chair across the table. "You're amazing! The first human to fly over the Alps! You were able to get a train to cross over a broken bridge that was practically being held up by the equivalent of paperclips and rubber bands! And the stuff you did in India and America? Amazing!"
"Uh, thank you?" Fogg smiled awkwardly, clearly not used to so much attention and praise all at once.
"You're welcome." They held out a hand. "I'm the Doctor, by the way."
The hand was taken for a very quick shake and Phileas tilted his head. "The Doctor?"
"Yeah, that's my name."
"I feel as if I've... heard the name before? It's a title, is it not?"
The Doctor grinned. "Yeah, in a way."
"How curious. Ah, any particular reason as to why you have decided to talk to me? Not that I'm trying to send you off, but..."
"Oh, yes! Hold on a mo', I completely forgot!" The Doctor dug into their coat pocket, trying to locate the proper item. They pulled out a few odds and ends, setting them on the table, much of Fogg's confusion and amusement as the strange collection.
"Found it!" The Doctor smiled, holding up a device, then held it out to Fogg. It was small, square, metallic and plastic. "I heard rumors that you're going to go on a sea voyage, to look for a mysterious beast of legend. Well, as someone with a lot of experience with such things, use this."
Fogg took it, looking it over with interest. "What is it?" He had a look in his eyes that screamed he wanted to tinker with it. The Doctor could apperciate that.
"It's a device that goes 'ding' when it is within a hundred meters of a massive, aquatic life form and the dings get louder and faster the closer you are to it. It can also tune a piano and a harpsichord."
They got a strange look from Fogg for that. "Thank you? But why would you have such a device?"
"Because." The Doctor reasoned, grinning. "And I think you can get a better use out of it than me, I can't wait to read about what happens!" He stood up from the table. "Best of luck, Phileas Fogg."
"Oh, uh, same to you? Not sure why I said that, but I feel like you're about to embark on your own journey."
The Doctor's smile faltered a little, but they chuckled, shoving their hands in their pockets. "I get the feeling that you're right about that."
Hellsite Nostalgia Tour 2023 Day 355
Eve of the Daleks
Not posting yesterday felt weird. I can’t believe 2024 is gonna be like that for 366 days…
“Eve of the Daleks”
Plot Description: on New Year’s Eve, at an Elf Storage facility, Sarah is working—again. Nick is her only customer—again. Same old same old. Except this year, their countdown to midnight will be the strangest and deadliest they have ever known
(Before I press play, I do wonder if I’ll feel the same way watching this as Mary (potentially) feels every time there’s a Mary I talk about in one of these series. I didn’t feel it with Sarah Jane but that’s because she’s Sarah JANE)
…dude…read the room. She’s CLEARLY rather be AT those parties on nye than at work. I mean, just because you and I don’t like nye, doesn’t mean everyone doesn’t
Shut the fuck up, Nick. Yes, she deserves better than Jeff, but that doesn’t mean YOU
Also how does she stay in business if Nick is her ONLY customer??
They were promised a beach and the Doctor brought them to Manchester
Oh…Jeff isn’t her boyfriend, he’s a family member? Coworker? Truly not sure
Excuse me?!?! It killed Nick and Sarah, but then it also seemingly killed the TARDIS trio??
Are we in a time loop? Why is the Dalek sending them into a time loop rather than actually killing them?
Dalek: The inferior human is correct. Dan: who are you calling inferior?! Dalek: you. (I will never not love when the Daleks are sassy)
“We’re stuck in a time loop with killer robots” is the funniest thing to immediately make sense for two people who’ve never met the Doctor before
Nick, you need a better way to explain that. You can’t just say you’ve held on to stuff from all the women you’ve dated in a storage unit just in case they ever want it back…especially not organized this thoroughly. She can buy a new monopoly game. She’s harsh, but Sarah’s right, he should throw things away
They better not have killed Dan off. I know he’s the most random dude who just got real lucky to get brought along but…doesn’t mean he deserves to die
Sarah’s so fucking funny. Girl, you did not have to tell Nick you did not go looking for him in the second loop
So, how ARE Jeff’s rooms full of random shit going to actually end up helping?
I don’t want them to end up together but if they could be casual friends after this, I think it would be good for both of them. Sarah already said Nick’s crush on her for the past three years and coming to the storage unit just before midnight on nye is stalker-y. Don’t make them get together
So at what point did Yaz start feeling this way about the Doctor?? Graham and Ryan never picked up on it but DAN does?? UNLESS it was after the other two left
Dan being the best wingman for Yaz
Omg…it’s not elf storage…it was always meant to be self storage
You know…that was even more spectacular than when Rose’s workplace blew up. There’s fireworks this time
Uuuuuugggggghhhhhhhh they DID make Sarah and Nick a couple in the end…….wait. Wait. Wait. Their first date is traveling around the world together. PUMP THE FUCKING BREAKS AND GET COFFEE OR DINNER FIRST
For the character ask game:
1 character : Yasmin Khan
2 characters: the TARDIS and the Doctor
3 characters: Prof. Yana, Agent O and President Saxon
Pretty please :) (feel free to choose the one you like best or do all three sets)
i've already done the 3 person one so i'm gonna skip that but what a wonderful assortment of characters. they don't seem connected in any way but all of them seem 100% trustworthy. i feel like you could add the welcome bot from dark water, misi, to it. unfortunately that one's only for 3 characters. ah well
yasmin khan
1. Could you take them in a fight?
fuck no sjdkfkg i'd go down SO fast
2. Would you let them cook for you?
oh yeah sure! idk if she's any good at it but she won't be a complete disaster. better her than the doctor
3. They give you a haircut! Is it any good?
ooh doubt it. i think yaz could cut long hair in a pinch, she seems pretty good at different hairstyles, but i might allow her to do an undercut at most - the rest of my hair is too dumb and complicated sjfjgk
4. What would they get you for your birthday, if anything?
probably something impersonal like nice soap, or if she knows me a little better a pretty notebook. nothing too big
5. If they were a YouTuber, what sort of content would they create? Would you be subscribed to them?
travel vlogs probably - and no, but i'd see her instagram every now and then and hang out there because she's pretty <3
tardis & the doctor
1. You have to choose one to erase from their series! Who do you pick?
goodbye doctor. it's tardis who now
2. Who would you rather run into in a dark alley at night?
i'd rather Quite Literally run into the tardis because then i'd be inside the tardis and i count that as a win in any circumstances, however there's no way i'm missing out on my companion moment so the doctor it is <3
3. Who would you save from a burning building? Who would be more likely to save you from a burning building?
the doctor would save me via tardis & i mean. the tardis will be completely fine in a burning building so i'm saving the doctor
4. Who would win in a dance-off?
well one of them is a humanoid with limbs and the other is a wooden box skdkfkg
5. They swap bodies for 24 hours! How badly do they mess up (or improve) each other's lives?
this feels like a doctor who episode already lol
the tardis spends the entire 24 hours engaging in earthly (broadly speaking) delights such as existing in one time at a time and eating Every Food, and the doctor has a similar experience to a demon possessing someone with a chronic illness - oh there is so much wrong with this body. not that they know how to fix it they can barely drive
thanks for the ask this was fun!!
Thasmin Watching P.2 (DW Magazine stuff)
I’m posting the second part of the “Thasmin Watching” from the DWM (the third and last part will follow shortly)
Tumblr media
“This episode very pointedly puts the kibosh on any previous hints of flirtation between Yaz and Ryan, with Ryan asking Yaz to set him up with her sister. “I could be your brother-in-law”, he says. “I’d be a good brother-in-law”.”
Tumblr media
“When the Doctor tells her friends that she comes from a planet called Gallifrey, it’s Yaz who immediatly ask for a trip to see the Doctor’s home.”
Tumblr media
“Having lost her beloved Benni forever, Vilms sacrificed herself so that Yaz can live. Is this because she knows love when she sees it?”
Aww my heart...
Tumblr media
“Yasmin’s relief when the Doctor appears on the Skithra ship. Later, Yasmin shows her loyalty to the Doctor by going along with he assurances to Tesla that he has a great future ahead of him.”
Tumblr media
“When all the fam are watching the Doctor at the console, Yaz is the one who knows just how long they’ve been watching her for.”
Tumblr media
“Oh dear, the patnership splits upin this episode -the Doctor is a  sucker for a scientist, and so simpatico with Suki (until she turns out to be the baddie). Meanwhile, Yaz heads off with Gabriela, telling the Doctor to come back for her in a hour.”
Tumblr media
“Not a lot to watch this time, but Yaz’s frustation with the Doctor’s inaccurate piloting at the beginning has a define ‘old married couple’ vibe.”
PLEASE
Tumblr media
“Miss Clairmont discusses her frustrations over Byron’s ambiguous feelings towards her, saying, “His answers only increase the enigmz.” Yaz replies, “I know someone like that”. Claire asks if Yaz would trade her enigmatic person for someone reliable and dull, to which she can only respond, “My person’s a bit different”.
Tumblr media
““We”re not just gonna leave you,” Yaz says ti the Doctor - but they’re forced to do so. Later, this gives us a chance to see how Yaz has developed her ‘What would the Doctor do?’ philosophy: “We’re gonna keep all of you safe. We’re gonna find the Doctor. And we’re gonna take them Cybermen down”.”
Tumblr media
Yaz leads the others in their attemps to rescue the Doctor. Later, she tries to stop the Doctor leaving to detonate the Death Particule, both ot them tearful at the parting.”
Tumblr media
Captain Jack’s heart-to-heart with Yaz about the joy and pain of travelling with the Doctor is delivered with the wistful sadness of someone who’s been there too.”
That’s it for today! I’ll try to post the last tomorrow ;) Please don’t repost my pics, and don’t forget to reblog, it’s what keeps fandoms alive. ^^
DOCTOR WHO SPOILERS YOU ARE WARNED !!!!!
Okay so wtf chibnall , how dare he screw over Yazs character like that.
Through out the show Yaz has been all about how she didn't want to stop travelling because doc saved her and gave her something to live for. Every season she's pushed through and stuck around and just last episode she mentioned how she wanted it to go on forever. And then she leaves ? That's it.
Fuck no.
For one , we never got her to admit her feelings even though the last two episodes have been all about her admitting she loved Doctor . They had a perfect moment to do it and yet she didn't .
Secondly she is just fine that she's dying and leaving and she leaves without question?
her end should've been like Rose , forced apart from the woman she loves. Have the doctor shove her out the TARDIS . Have her begging to be let back in.
I feel queer baited and so angry
I'm gonna rewrite this shit. Bullcrap .
 first note: no one but maybe Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis has gotten the cybermen quite right... sure it's fun to have villains boasting, but cybermen (or ~cybermasters) are scary bc they're not supposed to do That (that being any emotion at all)
do appreciate the continuity of bringing back the ~hybrids~ (tm)... .
still holding out hope that there will be fallout/consequences to the last universe reset / Armageddon and the doctor's "solution" there (1% of hope)
im enjoying this a lot but i do have to give the critique that the emotional grounding of 13's and yaz's arcs feels very thin (as individuals and as a pair) and hasn't been the focus 20 minutes in, better hurry up @ show
we started the era with a funeral, and ended with support group for grief. bookend storytelling!
Tumblr media
(though lol not to brag mates but the 10-era crew has probably have cycled thru a dozen whatsapp - facebook - zoom calls and discord groups by the time this is happening)
CHIBNALL IM GOING TO LET YOU FINISH BUT-
Tumblr media
OK overall takes...
im gonna need time to digest lol yes, lots of very clever things, cool lore, and thematic bookends (esp, re: the fam, unit, cycles, optimism, and the master), some Right choices for classic characters BUT a lot of wasted potential for the current ones (thasmin, 13, yaz, honestly even dan! what a flimsy goodbye...).
i also think this finale fits well  the rest of the era, a lot of excellent set ups for fic writers + fandom to elevate, esp in regards to character stuff and new interpretations of old themes (regeneration as identity, emigration metaphors, companion grief, etc). im always gonna be thankful for this lesson in the 13th era: art is what the interpreter of the art brings to it. a lot of people didn’t bring a lot to this era (for valid reasons, sometimes just for misogyny/racist ones)  so they didn’t get a lot, but those who worked their way thru the subtle stuff and even “added-in” stuff, got a great, if imperfect work w/ a lot of nuances, and def things never before done in dw (one of the major wins: making the doctor mysterious again, and making them a refugee / vulnerable rather than “president of the universe” he’d come to be in 10 season of new who). stray points (things i wasnt as satisfied with) 1- im not sure thirteen learned a lot? i think the reason the master's final point in his arc hit and landed so well, while thirteen's didn't as much (for me) is that it all kind of circled around with not really a "lesson" being learned.  we really pulled back the layers of the master's narcissism and obsession with the doctor, and followed it all the way through its origins in jealousy and self-hatred. meanwhile the doctor's optimist, happy-go-lucky facade-that-falls that the fandom did such excellent meta about... never quite hit it in the end with the show. EVEN when the setup was so clearly there SO MANY TIMES: giving yaz a gun, comitting triple genocide on the daleks/cybermen/sontarans, the tim shaw of it all... etc. 2- related to the point of 13 not growing: in the end she and yaz didn't commit to anything (quite the opposite, they stuck to the denial from the warriors ep, which i thought would be Turned Around here...), the special instead of calling out the older doctors, validated them for abandoning the companions (when tbh i think the True Thing, even if it hurt, would be for 13 to have outright said to ace and tegan [and yaz, even!] "im sorry, i wish i could have given you what you needed, but i couldnt. and probably never will") Let me stress it tho: i did really like the yaz/13, 5/tegan, ace/7 resolutions in isolation, they got those dynamics Right in a lot of ways (the 7/ace thing about the Cost you pay for “doing the right thing” , the doctor/tegan being like That but rlly only bc they care sm about each other (aaa) thing, and even with the yaz/doctor thing i can see the logic of them always being so positive + supportive, of doing all they can to “stay together”) but looking at it as a whole, in the context of "doctor who as one long running story", this felt a bit like a regression for the doctor, and by extension for ace, tegan and yaz. 3- i think there was also just not enough time to let the story breath. or rather, there WAS time but also a lot of nonsense taking that time (like the dalek trairo or the whole train thing i was SO EXCITED thinking it would be a kid from the doctor’s mysterious origins but nope, it was just a diversion to get to Squiggles.... even vinder whom i rlly enjoyed ... idk i have to question how Necessary it was to have a whole thing about him breaking his ship then repairing his ship... etc. ) . the scene at  the veeery end where 13 and yaz eat ice cream was like the first time chibnall slowed the peace *enough* to let the emotions land (and also the only moment i actually started crying asdfg).there were so many more companion / doctor companion interactions to be had, but bc of all the Stuff (tm) there wasn't time to rlly exploit (not having the companions in Somber Silence around the doctor, waiting for her to wake up for days, was almost a writting crime of negligence). but then again, that's been chibnall the whole way through lol he ain't no Aguinaldo Silva and that's fine. "understated emotions" is just not my thing.
OK, I've spent the last coupla days trying to codify my thoughts on the whole concept of Yaz sacrificing something of herself for 13's sake, and even though I very much doubt this sort of thing will happen in the centenary special, I'm still gonna post about it here 'cuz I'd like your takes on it.
Anyway here's the idea: a situation arises where Yaz has to remain on Earth for some reason and the possibility of 13 staying with her on Earth comes up.
For her own part, I think Yaz would struggle with this idea at first because adapting to a "regular" existence back on Earth would seem rather mundane compared to all the adventures she's had with 13, but ultimately I think she'd be happy with it.
Why? Because as much as she loves everything that comes with The Doctor (adventure, danger, exploration, etc.), she loves the Doctor (the person) even more. And in the end, again for her own part, she would find happiness in them living out their lives together on Earth, still finding adventure and all that, just on a smaller scale.
However...in that moment, when truly considering the question of 13 staying with her on Earth or not, I think Yaz would ultimately say no.
Why? Again, because she loves 13 and would sacrifice something of herself for 13's sake; in this case, she would sacrifice her own happiness.
Yaz would feel that 13...a being who she knows has spent millennia traveling throughout time and space...would grow tired of an everyday existence on Earth, even if it's only for a few decades. And ofc 13 might protest against this, bringing up how she'd spent centuries on Trenzalore, 24 years on Darillium, decades in the Judoon space jail, etc.
But Yaz knows the Doctor; she knows that the Doctor would've left those places and those situations if she'd been able to do so, and if she hadn't felt obligated to stay. And Yaz does not want 13 staying with her out of a sense of obligation.
She also knows how important the Doctor is, how many worlds and lives she's saved throughout her travels. If 13 remained on Earth, who knows how many other beings throughout time and space would suffer, simply because 13 wasn't there to help? Yes, Earth needs the Doctor, but so does the rest of the universe.
And finally...even if 13 did stay with Yaz on Earth...and even if Yaz lived a very long and very happy life with her...Yaz is still completely mortal and would eventually die.
Sooner or later...it'll hurt.
And the last thing Yaz would ever want is for the Doctor to hurt.
I believe 13 loves Yaz so much that she would be willing to stay with her on Earth...but Yaz loves 13 so much that she would be willing to let her go.
Jane brushed her black hair back, possibly praying with a touch she could change it back to blonde. Her mother was going to change, she knew this. And there was definitely nothing she could do about it. Regeneration was messy, when her dad became her mum the TARDIS got destroyed, with Jane sent on a collision course far away from her mother. She didn’t get to meet Yaz, or Graham, or Ryan, or find out about the whole ‘Tim Shaw’ thing until they found themselves on that Impossible Planet. Other times it ended with the TARDIS spinning out of control, or - in one very embarrassing case she never let him forget - her dad forgetting how to fly the ship, meaning she had to take control of the controls. And considering at the time she was in the form of - what amounted to - a 10-year-old boy, that was already a struggle as is.
However, this time… This time felt painful. And she wasn’t sure why. She’d been around for a while – remembering after the Raven how she was brought back to life as herself, how she travelled with her dad and Bill and Nardole, before moving on to her mother and the ‘fam’ as she had called them. It was almost like she was certain that… She was next. Most of her previous incarnations had never lasted as long, and she’d lost count. Was this how her mother felt? Jane sighed, looking up from the seat of the TARDIS as she saw her mother turn to the door. She frowned. She wasn’t sure where they landed, if it was on Earth or in outer space.
“Y-You’re leaving me?” She whispered, causing her mother to face her. Her smile was weak, it was clear she was holding all the energy back.
“Nah, nah, ‘m never gonna leave you, Janey.” She grinned, running to Jane and bending down, scooping her up in a massive hug. Jane had to physically hold back tears.
Even after discovering the truth of the Timeless Child, she and this incarnation of her mother were as thick as thieves. It was almost like they were sisters instead of mother and daughter. Or parent and child, whatever the case would be. She was closer to this version of her mother than she ever was to any other version of her. Well, except for one, the first one she met all those years ago, when Sarah Jane and her investigated that school at the same time as he did. She pulled back, looking up at the Doctor, her wild, unhinged smile almost infectious.
“I-It isn’t a goodbye, right?” Jane stuttered, “It’s a… ‘See you later’? Right?”
To which the Doctor nodded. “Yeah…” She smiled, “It’s a see you later. Anyway, gotta go. Need to get the new Doctor ready.”
And she left, leaving Jane in the TARDIS alone. She sat down, holding her legs towards her chest. It never got any easier, she knew that. From watching him, in pain, pull himself together as he screamed from 10 to 11… To the sudden shock of 11 to 12, in one swift, almost sneeze-like movement… To 13, appearing in a blaze of glory that took out the TARDIS and nearly took Jane out. But, this time, the Doctor clearly wanted to be alone. Jane frowned, slowly standing up as she heard the familiar buzzing of regeneration energy, muffled behind the door.
“I wanna see what happens next!” The Doctor exclaimed, almost sad in a way. Her voice was muffled by the door of the TARDIS, as Jane leant against where the phone itself would’ve been kept. Then, she heard the Doctor sigh, before hearing her speak once more.
“Alright,” She said, “Doctor Whoever-I’m-About-To-Be. Tag; you’re it.”
And that’s when the explosion of light happened. Jane felt the heat from where she was standing, it almost scalded the door she was behind. Considering the power of regeneration energy could destroy TARDIS’s and wipe out Nazi guards – thanks River – it made the most sense. It was exothermic in reaction, with heat and energy being pushed through a body as a form changed. Maybe curiosity had gotten the better of her, because Jane didn’t want to be stuck behind a door for the last bit, she wanted to see who the Doctor - her father, her mother, her parent, whoever they may be once this is over - became.
But when she pulled the door open, she was hit with a surprise. The Doctor’s clothes didn’t change before? She noticed the golden regeneration energy absorb her mother’s outfit, the flouncy pants, suspenders, navy crop top and pale blue jacket being absorbed into a suit, a pair of dusty trainers on their feet and a navy trenchcoat flapping in the wind caused by the regeneration. They had probably become a ‘he’ again, Jane thought, seeing the much more masculine hands that appeared out of the sleeves of the trenchcoat twitch slightly…
But when the energy stopped, Jane had to hold her breath. The figure standing before her, in the suit, was tall and quite thin. Almost matchstick in proportions. Light olive skin trailed up his body, with light stubble dusting his cheeks. There was an almost cockatoo esq quaff of brown hair that sprouted out the top of his head. And that should’ve been the point Jane realized. Something was wrong here. Instead, it took her a few seconds for her father to open his mouth before it clicked. He paused, sucking in his lips and rubbing his tongue around his mouth, before he suddenly spoke.
“I know those teeth.”
And Jane knew that voice. There was a second that he viewed his features, a hand covering his mouth and rubbing against the stubble as he looked at the hand in shock and awe. He then raised the other one, facing the palms down to look at the backs, eyes wide.
“What?”
Then he noticed his outfit had changed, quickly doing a scan of the material as Jane slowly stumbled out of the TARDIS and onto the cliffside alongside him. Her eyes were also wide as she quickly put two and two together. Had that ever happened before? She wouldn’t know, even though she’d regenerated 3 times before, she wasn’t as knowledgeable about it as he was.
“What?!” He repeated, voice hushed but still recognisable. Finally, he ran his hands across his face, feeling the details that had become foreign to him after centuries past.
Jane remembered. The last time the Earth saw this Doctor was Christmas 2010, when he saved London - and the world - from the resurrected Master and his ‘Master race’. He’d only had a few years as the Doctor, compared to other Doctors who walked the Earth or got stuck in time loops or fast-aging planets or whatever. He’d lost so much in a short span of time, Rose, Donna, Martha, Wilfred, Jenny… He turned to face her, as if trying to see if she was seeing or hearing the same that he was, to which they both responded with the exact same thing.
“What?!”
How the hell did someone regenerate backwards?
YES. yes!!!!
like the thing i keep running into is that it's kind of very easy to make the heartbreak about the regeneration(/transness). you could make 14&yaz a grieving the living sort of story. you could go sort of the rose "can you change back?" or 12 "you cant see me" route. but i think while that sentiment might be there somewhere for yaz it's way way down at the bottom of the list of things shes struggling with. like she has bigger things to be upset about right?
i think 14&yaz is not a grieving the living kind of story even though it might look like that on its face because i think thasmins last months (between sea devils and potd) were that story. i think theyve already done all the grieving. and i also think they were both so deadset on keeping the other alive, they cant help but be relieved too now because theyre both alive! safe! on earth! they got each other home!
they already did the grieving, together-apart, parallel but not talking about it. and now whats there is mostly i think relief, and for yaz all the anger she hasnt allowed herself to feel for like 5(, 6, 7?) years, and for the doctor a sort of involuntary detachment that comes with having regenerated. the doctor has a scar where yaz has an open wound. which i think in some ways helps because it makes 14 able to be there for yaz in the way 13 never could but it's also really painful right? if youre in yazs position
i wrote a little sex scene between them yesterday that im probably not gonna post i was just curious to see what would happen and !!!!!!! the amount of tension between two people who trust each other so absolutely. delicious. like the tension that used to be there between yaz and 13 in all the things left unsaid is completely deflated by yaz and 14 saying almost everything out loud. not always in the most direct way and definitely not in the most honest and fair good open communication kinda way, but they do say things now. so this like taut string between them is cut and completely gone and to balance it out (bc without tension no scene) this entirely new kind of tension appears. like it goes from this:
Tumblr media
to two of this:
Tumblr media
idk if im making sense. it was the most interesting scene ive ever written. not bc i wrote it well, just bc of the situation. also at one point the doctor was like i dont know what you want so Show Me and yaz was like Okay!!!! and that inversion too i thought was really interesting. i know i wrote it but like i dont make the decisions here i just write down what happens alright. yaz initiated because she was like I Just Need To Know. yaz is like i want to have had sex with you last year and we're time travellers so this works right?
Your tags on the reblog of my post are so spot on. Double essay power XD. Martha really did become such an echo of The Doctor, possibly more so than any other companion that we had seen thus far.
eheheeeeee my brain comes up with random essays of doctor who out of nowhere and then i look back and either be like huh. Or huh? and that makes all the difference. now if i can stop doing this under other ppl's gifsets especially gifset ppl's blogs that gives off a certain vibe of [lets hope this doesnt sound like they stumbled in a roundabout racism rodeo with a repeated history of doing so and this was just a fluke]
to think, martha may have not been doctorified had the bbc writers had their way and gotten joke wheelhouse* to write and guest star... [shivers]
am i gonna use this to obsess the fact that both tentoo and dhawan!doctor both said "i am the doctor" despite both never measuring up to the original but rather the perception of the companion's take of the doctor with the twist of 'maybe now i will be accepted. maybe now i measure up' and doing the extremist thing the doctor themselves abhor doing while they do it with manic glee and then are crushed when the dr and companion dont see them that way? yes.
(Near the end to Master!Doctor) YASMIN: You're not the Doctor. You'll never be the Doctor.
MASTER: You going to let him do this to me, Yaz? Huh? To your Doctor?
YASMIN: You're not my Doctor! Because you know the greatest strength my Doctor has? She's spent her life gathering friends. She can't help it. And she is loved, because she taught us to never give up, even if someone steals your very existence.
versus
(about tentoo) ROSE: But he's not you.
[tenth doctor and doctordonna and tentoo jumping hoops to get her to like tentoo]
NEW DOCTOR: I look like him and I think like him. Same memories, same thoughts, same everything. Except I've only got one heart.
ROSE: Which means?
NEW DOCTOR: I'm part human. Specifically, the aging part. I'll grow old and never regenerate. [everybody still trying to convince her]
ROSE: But, it's still not right, because the Doctor's still you. [in referring to tenth dr]
And the
THIRTEENTH DOCTOR: You lost. You gambled and you lost. And now your body's failing because of what you put it through.
MASTER: Maybe. But if I can't be the Doctor, neither can you.
versus
TENTH DOCTOR: But you've got to. Because we saved the universe, but at a cost. And the cost is him. He destroyed the Daleks. He committed genocide. He's too dangerous to be left on his own.
NEW DOCTOR [TenToo]: You made me.
DOCTOR: Exactly. You were born in battle, full of blood and anger and revenge. Remind you of someone?
its all about the:
YASMIN: If you think I am going to let you...
MASTER!DOCTOR: I am the Doctor now! I am the Doctor! (in pain) You should have shot me when you had the chance. I need clothes. Try to escape, or touch anything, and I'll kill you.
that came from:
DONNA: Just, just wait for the Doctor.
NEW DOCTOR [TenToo]: I am the Doctor. Maximising Dalekanium power feeds. Blasting them back! Fulfilling the prophecy.
its about the companions that retain sense of self that lean heavy on traveling with the doctor that become doctorified but the ones that became an extension of the doctor are ostracized as a legitimate doctor regeneration by the doctor and companion themselves (tentoo and master!doctor)
because if theres an echo of the dr, rest assure the dr will avoid them [stares at the lack of tenth doctor adventures with martha audios while it feels like we gonna get ooh damn this shit is dry as hell bland cough cough dusty™️ tenrose audio season 3 and weirdly strong sexual tension tendonna season 4 audio]
its about the more you are like the dr the longer the dr never visits you its about the dr STILL HAVING MARTHAS PHONE DESPITE ALSO HAVING A SMARTPHONE ON THE SIDE
its about we aint never gonna see tentoo again at least dhawan!doctor acted so much like every single tentoo fanfic where tentoo is evil (ITS SO MANY ITS SO MANYYY LIKE SO MANY OF THEM AND THEY SQUEEZED AS MUCH AS THEY COULD IN POTD and dhawan ate it up and served it spicy hot and ready fresh out of oven on a clean plate steaming up glasses with a fresh cold drink we love our two 14s dhawan and tennant) that it brought david as the new 14th doctor
sidebar: dhawan and tennant got in marvel w characters in the same damn city. THEY ALMOST MET AGAIN one day. one day theyll meet and either fuck or kill each other and a coin flip on whether thats psychological or physical in doing so
Okay so some overall thoughts on Power of the Doctor
Disclaimer: I have found Chibnall’s era to be entertaining overall, but lacking the spirit of Doctor Who. It’s had some interesting ideas, but I think there has been a little too much focus on being flashy, and not quite enough focus on storytelling.
That, however, is my opinion. If you found meaning in any of these stories that’s great and I’m happy for you. There have been great and amazing episodes in the Chibnall era, and I can understand why you would.
Power of the Doctor had this problem too to some extend, and that’s all I’ll say on that. I’m not here to bash it, I could go every moment where I felt it suffered from this particular shortcoming, but I don’t really think it would add much to the conversation around it.
With that out of the way:
I really, really enjoyed the culmination of Yaz’s character arc. She has been trying to be the Doctor all of this time, and I think a lot of us have been thinking that was going to end in her dying. I was pleased that was not the case, and that instead she got to be the main character of the show for a bit.
She didn’t have to step up without the Doctor around, because she had been going in that direction for a while. She piloted the TARDIS, she gathered her allies, she stopped the Master (A Master that she specifically had history with), and finally she sort of saved the Doctor when she carried them away from an exploding planet (moon? planetoid?). In that moment Yaz was filling the role of the Doctor, and brilliantly so.
Rather than her arc ending with her getting too caught up in trying to be the Doctor and getting killed, it ended with her getting to be the Doctor in a lot of ways, including having to say goodbye to someone she loved: the Doctor. Mandip’s acting had me tearing up, and then smiling at the end when Yaz realised that being the Doctor also meant letting go of people and letting them move on to new adventures without you.
However, that did have the consequence of Thirteen getting less screen time in their last episode, and I think that’s a shame.
I mean, we can argue semantics over whether the Doctor or their companion(s) is the protagonist of Doctor Who, but at the end of the day this was a goodbye for both Yaz and Thirteen and I don’t think Thirteen got to shine quite as much as they deserved.
That aside, Jodie obviously killed it. The regeneration scene fit Thirteen well, and her acting sold it well. There was a hint of sadness, but also that joy and curiosity that is so very Thirteen.
Dan... Okay, I’m gonna be honest here. I liked Dan realising that he was no longer willing to put himself in mortal danger to travel with the Doctor. But I wish that they had done this at the end of Legend of the Sea Devils so we had had a full episode of Dan when he left. The opening part felt a bit tagged on, like they forgot to add Dan to the script and had to come up with an excuse for him not to be there.
Dhawan!Master was brilliant as always. Do I understand what he was trying to achieve? No. Did him being Rasputin make any sense? Also no. But was it fun? Yeah! And did Sacha kill it always? Absolutely. Big Finish I hope you have his agent’s number, because I am not ready to give him up.
For legal reasons I am not getting into the continuation of the Timeless child plot.
All of the cameos were lovely. Was it very obvious occasionally over the top fan service? absolutely. But you know what, if we can’t have nostalgia in a regeneration episode when can we? I laughed at the dress for the occasion reference and got uhm. pretty misty-eyed at all of the classic doctors they’d gotten involved for that scene with Thirteen.
But uhm... am I the only one who was unhappy about the whole Tegan’s ex-husbands + Ace and Graham thing? Cause it’s just... Of all the companions to bring back and then hint at male love interests for, you picked Tegan and Ace? Possibly the two classic companions most widely believed to be wlw? (excluding Nyssa for obvious reasons) It just... doesn’t sit well with me. Especially not because Tegan and Nyssa being together was already canon, and that line about the ex-husbands didn’t add anything to the story. (Ace obviously did also have male love interests before and I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. It’s just the combination of the two I didn’t really enjoy.)
But! The companions’ support group! Yes, good, love that for them. I especially loved the empty chair as sort of a promise that they were going to eventually include more people.
(Do we know why Ryan wasn’t there? I’m assuming Tosin just didn’t have time to make a cameo, but it was such a shame not to have all of Thirteen’s companions there to see them off.)
And finally the preview for the next episode.
Okay lads, i’m gonna be real with you here. I’m concerned. Now, do I look forward to the R2D era? yes! I’m excited to see what he’s bringing back. But am I keen on so many characters from the first RTD era returning? eeerh.
Look, I’m just a bit worried about Ncuti Gatwa’s debut being overshadowed by all of this, you know? Cause I think it should be about him, and I don’t know that it will be...
I very much hope I will be proven wrong, though. And I mean, as an aficionado of all things Gallifrey and Time Lords, a look at regeneration and some of the forms it can take is obviously something that does appeal (now what time lord who has regenerated to look like himself several times could tumblr user braxiatel be thinking of? hmm)
So yeah. Pretty good episode, had its ups and downs, but overall I think it was tonally similar to the rest of Thirteen’s era and a fitting sendoff.
