Okay, so I finally finished the live action atla and I have some thoughts.

I feel like they have stripped away the soul of the cartoon. By taking away Aangs fun, Kataras angriness, and Sokkas humour the story feels empty. Also, someone said Zuko doesn’t say honour once, which is truly detrimental to his character.

By not having any filler episodes, we didn’t get to learn who these characters were, and they didn’t get to bond with each other, so it made no sense when they kept telling each other they were family like guys you met a week ago.

I think they tried to make up for it, including as many fan favourite moments as possible, and by sticking to the key original plot beats. But in doing this they’re getting there in very different ways, which don’t always make sense, and feel really crammed together and rushed. I think they needed to let some of these moments go and tell their version of the story, because let’s be honest, the show really doesn’t hold up on its own and I think the main reason people are enjoying it is because of these references, not because of the story as a whole.

It seems like they’re trying to make a live action cartoon rather than a live action adaptation of a cartoon. All the wigs are terrible, Yues in particular. All the costumes look really cheap, I think partly this is due to them sticking too close to the cartoon and wanting the characters to look exactly the same when it doesn’t fit in this new medium. I think another reason for this is that particularly the water tribe costumes don’t look fit for use, the coats are all way too thin and I cannot believe that they would keep anyone warm enough at the poles. I think another reason for this is none of the clothes look worn, and they all look freshly ironed, which makes it difficult to believe in this world.

I will give them credit though, making the 41st Zukos crew was so smart and I love it.

#having the mechanist jet and omashu in the same episode was a big mistake #The costumingwas truly terrible #all the characters looked like cosplayers #No disrespect cosplayers I think they’re great #But I think there’s a difference between cosplaying a cartoon character and playing a live action version of a cartoon character #The whole vibe of the gaang was off #I also really didn’t like the azula backstory #having mai and tylee around instead of doing their own thing feels like azula has much more of a support system in place #so it feels less likely she’s going to have a breakdown #I know that’s not how mental health works #But changing her backstory changes her character #And I’d be interested in future seasons to see if this changes how they handle Azula overall #also why was ozai sounding kind of proud of zuko #it makes no sense #The only reason I can think of is because it was in front of Azula #like is this one of his manipulation tactics?#I just don’t understand what the point of making a live action was when we all knew the cartoon was always going to be better #it took me almost a week to get through the series #And usually I’ve binge watch shows as soon as they come out #So if I’m not finished in two days max it really shows that the show wasn’t that good #nahvatar the last airbender #Bring back filler episodes #atla live action #atla #natla #avatar the last airbender #netflix avatar the last airbender #avatar the last airbender live action #avatar live action #avatar

so i googled rachel gatina's fate and.. fuck that? my girl deserves so much more

it's good that i already don't like jim as a guardian so i am not affected by wheather jim being homophobic in the previews is accurate or out of context, i do worry for little li ming though 😭

"but vi he's tryin-" no i have ZERO empathy and understanding for any bad guardian/parent. i don't care if you have trauma, i don't care if you're poor, i don't care about how difficult your like is, i don't care how much you love the kid but struggle to show it.

if you have to take care of a kid, you do so with love and affection and care regardless or your circumstances, which jim is not the best at, which automatically makes me dislike him as a character, no greys, only black & white.

yes you make mistakes as a parent, but you can always make it up to them, and it costs literally nothing to be kind. stop projecting your problems on your children

ok so i love and adore moon knight but i can’t stop thinking about it in the context of the other disney+ marvel shows and this article about the trauma plot, specifically these lines:

“Trauma has become synonymous with backstory, but the tyranny of backstory is itself a relatively recent phenomenon—one that, like any successful convention, has a way of skirting our notice. Personality was not always rendered as the pencil-rubbing of personal history…Nicholas Dames writes in “Amnesiac Selves” (2001), describing a tradition of “pleasurable forgetting,” in which characters import only those details from the past which can serve them (and, implicitly, the narrative) in the present.

Certainly the filmmakers of classical Hollywood cinema were quite able to bring characters to life without portentous flashbacks to formative torments. In contrast, characters are now created in order to be dispatched into the past, to truffle for trauma.”

And when you look at Marvel’s other body of television work, it’s basically this formula, over and over. Moon Knight is a more artful iteration of the cliche, but it is hardly unique. episode 5 itself is essentially a case study of the trauma plot, in an absurdly literal sense: two characters going room-to-room and exploring memories like they’re walking through an ikea display.

from an audience perspective, the cathartic hit can be deeply compelling, especially when combined with an incredible acting performance (like Oscar Isaac’s). but at what point is this good/necessary storytelling, and at what point does it become pseudo-emotional indulgence?

i dont know how i feel about samurai champloo tbh like. is it good or did it just spearhead lo-fi. am i nostalgic for the show or just nujabes in general. i cant separate it from the nostalgia factor and some of it aged so so so terribly but then again the visuals are so immaculate that i genuinely think that what they did in the mugen near death scene (ep 14) is some of the best visual storytelling ive ever seen

#i did continue rewatching.........................#its more clear cut for me w/ bebop cause i liked it better as a kid but these individual eps are just so well constructed #and damn some of this does not work as well now that its not the 90s #i conflicted but i did rip through most of it over a weekend so #the strength of both shows is in the vibe they cultivated #imo the bebop live action failed cause they didnt capture the vibe and they did too much telling instead of showing. which would be fine #if it wasnt based off a highly visual and quiet work. they dont tell you shit in that show you just have the information beamed into ur hea #oh it doesnt hurt that all three characters are really well laid out and have a dynamic of all time wait a min wait #okay is the show just good. is it just good.#is the only failing the 90s typical sexism. man i gotta think on this

Short explanation of what the hell the Luffy tab on top of the dashboard is:

- For some reason the tumblr marketing team decided to make a deal with Netflix to promote the new live action One Piece movie with a site wide tab, instead of like... An ad.

- The Tab started with the name Luffy, the protagonist of the series. It has now changed to Zoro. There's not explanation given but I suspect it's in the order of the One Piece rap

- The tab seems to be very broken, only showing 5-7 posts that were posted months ago. The users who's art and posts have been included were not asked permission to be used in an ad campaign.

- The disclosing of this being an ad has also been suspect, with many only finding out through word of mouth rather than the tab telling it. I'm not a lawyer but I think that's at least skirting a crime.

- The popular reccomendation is to not engage with the tab, because it'll encourage tumblr to pull more stunts like this. Their sponsors will be delighted the more you click, no matter if its out of confusion or not.

This whole thing is a mess and I hate how marketing teams are trying to bypass adblockers by making alternative ads that get people talking. The act of me posting this is what they want and I'm enraged.... Still, uh, I want to spread the info we've gathered as a community. Let me know if you find more or something is incorrect.
