This is a great observation. I think the truth is Loki DID have something with this dagger metaphor because it's a genuine sentiment he has toward the beauty and pain of love. Sylvie, unlike Loki, didn't really get to deepen her family bonds. She is a version of Loki that is even more cynical and cold than the version we have from the sacred timeline.

What I find REALLY interesting is that once Mobius compliments the circus metaphor, Loki leans into metaphors more heavily than he does in the movies. He goes on to make the "wolf ears, wolf teeth" metaphor, then follows up with the "Ragnarok salad" metaphor. Then, of course, the infamous dagger metaphor. It's like once Mobius says he's good at them, Loki believes it outright and can't help but try to make more, perhaps subconsciously for his own self-esteem. It's an almost child-like reaction in seek of praise and positive reinforcement.

The other two times Loki uses metaphors with Mobius, Mobius fully listens until either: a.) he calls Loki out on lying (which he half-was), and b.) he laments his salad BUT is willing to put Loki's theory to the test. With B, he gets positively excited when Loki is proven right, so much so that Mobius is practically glowing as he says, "He's doing great!"

Not once does he disregard what Loki has to say, even if the metaphor is a stretch.

If Sylvie comes back next season, I think Loki will forgive her, and that would be a metaphor for his own self-forgiveness. But I can't help but be hopeful that Mobius will continue to be the loving, accepting force Loki needs regardless of what timeline he's in. I keep fantasizing the new Mobius will stitch the blade wound on Loki's shoulder (the act in itself another metaphor):

M: Yeesh. This is deep. Machete?

L:... Dagger. A big one.

M: Well, whoever got you, got you good. You're fine, though. Just a quick patch-up.

L: I really don't need... (he has magic, after all)

M: *starts gently cleaning the wound and suturing*

L: *eyes wide and sad and wistful*

M: I'm not much of a hand-to-hand guy myself, but I know may way around a needle.

L: Do you always put broken things back together again?

M: *smiling as he finishes*My boss says I have a soft spot for 'em. Anyway, you're not broken. Just a lil' roughed up. Some food and water and new clothes and you'll be right as rain. *wraps arm in bandage*. So what's your name?

L: *absolutely dying inside*

Thank you! And I agree, Loki was so close with his dagger metaphor. It made perfect sense for his perspective, imo, and the fact that this and the later rejection from Sylvie add on to it, hurts. And you are totally right, of course it wouldn't make sense to her because she has such different, lonelier, "colder" experiences.

Not to go off on a tangent too much, but that reminds me of Loki's insistence in the Void about Sylvie being "better", and all through that last episode, his complete pleading and submission and wishing for her to be okay and move past the revenge...to me, it feels like Loki took Mobius' treatment of him, extension of empathy and all, and tried to do that with Sylvie. Which is wonderful, because it was someone finally giving her a chance and supporting her, but it did also end up making him entirely blind to what facets were truly her and what facets were his own fantasy. It made him blind to her not seeing him and not trusting him, either. Really sad.

On that note, I agree with you about Sylvie, and I hope the same for Loki and Mobius, too. If Sylvie doesn't come back though I feel like Loki moving through the grief, running to Mobius, and saying "we made a terrible mistake...we freed the timeline" could be seen as a metaphor of that self-forgiveness, too. Really, that was all Sylvie's doing that Loki desperately fought against, but he takes on that joint-responsibility burden and doesn't distinguish the facts. He helped her get there and did believe in the choice up to the near end, so while it'd be justified to lean into that hurt, and it'd be understandable if he briefly reverted his previous angry instincts...he doesn't. It's just all about fixing the mistake, looking ahead to deal with the consequences and deal with the universe. He's grown so much, I am so afraid that a lack of his Mobius will break him. This alternate Mobius better stay kind ;a;

And yes, yes, yes on the metaphors! That is such a great observation! Your mind!! And might I add, as annoyed as Mobius is at his ruined salad, Loki gets to the end of the presentation and Mobius just says, "What am I looking at?" He doesn't say it's clumsy, Loki does that; Mobius is just so confused lol. But yes, again, I love that, that he "fully listens" and with all 3 metaphors, they...linger in each, for lack of a better word.

Now you make me want to gif that prideful Mobius moment, anon, just for his face!

one of the weirdest things in this fandom for me is people claiming that characters “deserve better”, like completely seriously, as if they’re real people that mxtx personally murdered or something. i get that people connect with characters and everything, i do too, but at the end of the day they’re just constructs in a story? idk it’s strange to me to act like the author owes characters or the audience anything

Hi anon,

I’m sort of on the middle with this one. Especially with things like franchises and tv series, where there might not have a clear arc already decided for the different characters or for where the series will go, we can encounter characters who have been underutilised or who have been treated dirty by the creators (in western tv shows that seems to happen with disturbing regularity to characters of color or queer characters). As well, works of fiction may also make the characters do things that seem completely incoherent with their characterisation, character growth or their motivations, which can make you feel like the character deserved to be treated better by the creatives. And this can be pretty frustrating not only because you like a character, but because the work of fiction seems to be lesser for not having utilised this character’s potential or for having ruined their stories. Generally, these criticisms will be able to pinpoint how that character is underutilised compared to other characters, how the character’s potential that was set up by the story were never explored or resolved or how the fate of the character ultimately contradicts what was set up at the beginning and throughout the story without providing the audience/reader a sense of diegetic logic for that contradictory fate. It is never about saying, in isolation, that “character died” or that “character suffered” or that “character is a minor character” although it can be things along the lines of “this is the only character who died so soon after being introduced, most other characters survived for at least a season and they just so happened to not be white how weird” or “while most characters are made to suffer, this is the only character that the audience is invited to be a voyeur to long, drawn-out torture sessions that are disturbingly framed in an almost erotic manner”. “Bad things happen to character” on its own is not sufficient because, uh, it’s fiction and fiction requires a minimal amount of conflict and tension which means that characters suffer and die all the time.

I agree with you that, a lot of time, when people clamour that a character “deserves better” all they mean is that nothing bad should have happened to them and that they would have gotten their own version of a happily ever after. And there is inherently nothing wrong with that sentiment: growing to care for a character is one of the ways that fiction can be effective, that it can move us. We’re supposed (if all goes well!) to come to care for the fate of at least some of the characters, whether it is a comedy or a tragedy. It’s also totally normal to see a minor character, enjoy them, and wish to see more of them even if in that particular story they were only there to play a minor role. Both of these things are part of what draws people to transformative works. It’s all fine! That being said, it starts to annoy me when people use these things as baseless attacks against a creative, especially when they display a profound misunderstanding of how storytelling and characters-as-constructs work in the process, or sometimes simply a profound misunderstanding of the story they are seeking to criticise. It’s one of the reason I wrote my MianMian meta because so many people, based only on the fact that MianMian appeared more often in the story, argued that CQL had treated her character better when, if you stop to think about it--about who the character is, what she means, what role she plays in the story--a lot more care was put into her character in MDZS even if her appearances were fewer (hell, even her agency is indirectly better since MDZS didn’t include a scene where she meets Wangxian before they rush to a scene of danger but she stays behind because gets told by Hanguang-jun to stand back in her home and protect her daughter--CQL really did invent feminism). In a way, I find it difficult to take seriously the claim that a “character deserved better” when it comes from someone who didn’t even do the work of understanding the character and its place in the story to begin with.

I’m not saying that people need to have complete deference to the canon or the creatives that gave us a work, but I think it is a simple courtesy to not get incensed at a creative just because some of their characters are *gasp* minor characters, or to at least give them the benefit of the doubt when you feel a death is “pointless”: mayhaps check once more whether there could have been something about the story you missed or misunderstood. Also to understand that just because a character is their little cinnamon roll or whatever that they might not be portrayed that way in the narrative and as a result might not be given a perfect, hallmark-card happy ending. In other words, you can write as many fics about JYL staying alive or JYL being a “bamf” (because a female character only has value that way apparently) or about JC ending up the most happy and fulfilled and recognised person with everything he could possibly want (since he sooooo earned it in the narrative by growing and learning from his mistakes and atoning for them....), but maybe reconsider having the summary be: “Character A deserved so much better, so I’m taking shit into my own hands, fuck MXTX”. If only for the fact that it is very cringe.

Destiel is bad for mlm. An essay with comebacks.

CLARIFICATIONS BEFORE I START: DESTIEL FANS DON'T INTERACT WITH THIS OF COURSE!!! Btw, I am mlm, I have a loving boyfriend who acts like Castiel while I act like Sam a lot... so yeah, I'm a Sastiel shipper so this post may come off as a little biased but I want to help other shippers who are against Destiel. So if you're not a Sastiel shipper, still, don't leave- I'm not forcing you to ship it. That's wrong to force someone to ship. I'm also anti-Dean person. In this post, there will be spoilers for Supernatural.

Ight let's put this show on the road... first off...

WHY DESTIEL IS BAD: -Yes, the ship is mlm and if canon, will be a mlm ship... but it’s bad rep. Why? Because if you want good representation, you gotta have a good relationship and not be queerbait for about 12 years. Dean literally beat Castiel up multiple times (even without the Mark of Cain). Let me ask you this fellas in a relationship... do you beat your partner? Bark commands at them 24/7? See them as a monster at times? I don’t think so.

-Stepping away from the ship itself, the fans are toxic and normally straight cis women who think they know what’s good for mlm or fetishizes mlm. (However, I’m not saying everyone who ships Destiel is straight and a cis woman) Also, the Destiel shippers will often times force others to ship that ship with them.

-What is mlm fetishization? People who solely love mlm ships- they barely have any wlw ships or straight ships. Just... mlm... or forces two males together, even if they are straight. They are or the equvialent of asking a gay male to be their 'gay friend'. That is very toxic. Destielhellers... get a new hobby, something healthier than reading/watching sexual assault, emotional abuse, and physical abuse.

COMEBACKS:

-When Castiel raised Dean from hell, he didn’t do it because “he loves Dean!” It was because Castiel is a soldier, a perfect soldier too, created by God to obey orders without question. When Castiel was first introduced to the show, he didn’t understand human emotions nor actually feel them so how could he quickly love Dean? Castiel also raised from Sam from hell.

-“#Theysilencedyou” on Instagram... the CW didn’t silence you, no one did. It was never canon in the first place. If Destiel was canon in the first place and Dean says “I love you too” OUT LOUD to Castiel, then killing Castiel off and NOT GIVING Dean a happy ending would be a “they silenced you” moment. But did that really happen? No. In the end, Castiel and Dean got a happy ending, just not together. And WOAH WOAH WOAH DON'T PULL CHARLIE INTO THIS. The show does a good job of giving her a lot of screentime about her sexuality and whatnot. She got a girlfriend multiple times. Her first death... she died in a Joan of Arc kind of way too which is awesome to me- but that's not the point with Charlie. She didn't come back in the finale because of covid and it's heavily hinted that everyone in the alternative universe place did go to heaven. I bet you anything she's in heaven right now.

-Castiel’s last words were the words he said in 15x18. He was dying. The empty was getting him. Those were his dying words, if he had said those while not dying, I would understand “they silenced you” there too. But Castiel didn’t say it while NOT dying, right? Also, there are different types of meanings behind "I love you" such as the friendship kind, which I say "I love you" to a lot of my friends, there's the family kind, and yes, there's the lover kind. Castiel most likely meant it in a family way since he said- same with Dean- that the Winchester brothers were like family to him.

-The CW writers aren’t homophobic. Here’s a list of the lgbtq+ characters from their other shows:

-Sara Lance (Arrow) -Alex Danvers (Supergirl) -Clarke Griffin (The 100) -Nyssa Raatko (Arrow) -David Singh (The Flash) -Anissa Pierce (Black Lightning) -Toni Topaz (Riverdale) -Teddy Montgomery (90210) AND MORE.

Granted, there aren't many gay men in that list. That's because they haven't found an actor who would feel comfortable playing a gay man... toxic masculinity happens guys... Reminds you of a certain character in Supernatural?

-“Kill Sam/Jared!” Sadly, I’ve seen that comment. Firstly, if you kill Jared... that’s literal murder and... dude that’s so extremist... you shouldn’t wish death upon anybody. Secondly, Sam is a main character in the show. He’s Dean’s brother. If Dean was left alone with Castiel, it still wouldn’t happen. Why? Because like we saw in the finale (15x20), Sam was mourning after Dean and it left him to FOREVER remember his brother. Dean would be the same if Sam were to die and go to heaven. Dean’s and Sam’s brotherly relationship is the glue that keeps it all together in the show. One brother is very rarely without the other in screentime.

-“Sam is Destiel’s number one cheerleader!” Okay, no, I get where they get it from... the episode, Fan Fiction (10x5). But Sam was messing with Dean because he knew how squirmy he’d get. Dean sees Castiel as a brother... and imagine being shipped with your friend that you see as family. Horrible, right? because it’s getting rid of the aspects of your relationship? Sam even shipped himself with Castiel in one of the scenes. So how would that make him a cheerleader of Destiel?

-Destiel fans admitted to being queerbaited, which is bad and can lead to other shows in the future doing that. I’m gonna add the definition of queerbaiting: "a marketing technique for fiction and entertainment in which creators hint at, but then do not actually depict, same-sex romance or other LGBTQ representation." -from Wikipedia. I'm sorry but there was little queerbaiting with Destiel... because Dean would CONSTANTLY be a jerk to Castiel then we'd have like... one scene where Dean wasn't a jerk to Castiel in the episode, then never see a scene where Dean was kind to Castiel until two episodes later.

-"Dean isn’t straight!!!" Yuh he is straight, have you seen him with a man? Let alone, feel comfortable with one romantically? I'll type up all of the episodes in which he was passively homophobic later on... AND don’t push Sam into this saying some stupid stuff like “he’s homophobic!”

-“Jensen is homophobic!” I actually used to believe this until I woke up and did some research on that. How that started was by Dean, the character Jensen plays, not saying "I love you" back to Castiel/Misha. They're practically forcing the ship to happen. Jensen was just following the script, same with Misha. They're under a contract guys, they don't have much say in it. However, there have been some rumors saying Jensen is homophobic even before 15x18. I cannot confirm this but I've heard that Jensen did decline a fan's request to hold a pride flag... but there's not much context behind it because the fan themself could of been weird and creepy and harassing Jensen, or forcing Jensen to say Dean is something so he needs to hold up that pride flag. Or... yes, Jensen was lowkey being homophobic...

-Destiel fans are signing stuff to change the ending... like??? That won’t work. The cast's contract with CW is done. Also, this like the equivalent of Trump’s “STOP THE COUNT!!” and “I won the election!!!”.... changing stuff to make people believe you are right. That's hella manipulative. -[Insert that one shot of all of the crew together at the end of 15x20.] Destiel fan: "WHY WASN'T CASTIEL THERE?!! WITH DEAN IN HEAVEN?!?!!?!?!" Okay, firstly, Jack wasn't there too and he's now God, covid happens and the writers really wanted Bobby's actor to be there ((I forgot why, I'll add it in later!!! BUT THERE'S A REASON)). Mary and John Winchester could of been in that finale... there are so many characters that could of been in that finale guys, but COVID-19 happened. The lack of characters was for the actors' safety. I don't know about you but some show isn't more important than my own safety. Besides, the contract is about to be lifted, and they had other shows to act in.... Jared with Walker... Jensen with The Boys...

-"How is Destiel bad for mlm...? It's gay ship..." I already answered that question, but I just wanted to remind you guys that Destiel fans WILL ask this. But I'll sum it up for you guys: it's fetishization because you're pairing up a toxic man who sees that other person as another brother/best friend. Also, that 'toxic man' isn't bisexual. He always has been with females and makes lowkey homophobic remarks. On top of that, Dean has beaten Castiel up sooooo many times, both physically and mentally. ***This essay is a WIP... and I take constructive criticism. However, if you are a Destiel fan and write about this, I will ignore you.

Hi there! Annoying anon that loves rambling about the Valeska twins is here again 🤣 Let the discussion continue! 😂 Yeah, I totally get your point of writing such stories as a means of fulfilling wishes. I guess it makes sense from the writer's pov that they want to give these characters a different (better) treatment. Valid point, but still, they don't feel real to me.

(Below this is the rest of the messages, put together. Farther down, below the line, are my responses)

It's like I'm reading a story with a character that's called Jerome/Jeremiah Valeska and looks exactly like him, but it's not truly him (just like you said, at their cores they are bad guys). But it's perfectly understandable and all right that people want to give them a rest from their chaotic lives haha 😊 everybody’s got their cup of tea ☕

Damn, yes, these stories are so hard to find! I imagine that writing something of the sort and investing so much in such complex characters can be draining and daunting, so yeah I get the reason why there are not so many fics out there... and OCs are so difficult to write haha you are right. They take too much time and effort 🤣

Yeah, I guess Ecco was not the best example. It's very true what you say about Jeremiah's and Ecco's relationship. In the show it was portrayed as a professional one. So we don't really know if there's anything else beyond that, save for some level of concern. So I guess I should have gone with Bruce instead because, just like you said, Jeremiah went totally bonkers when he realized that Bruce was the only one who saw past his resemblance to Jerome.

Basically, what I was trying to say is that in these fics there's not really that same vibe of evil obsession and lunacy from the twin's side. Maybe just some sort of heightened jealousy when their partner is addressed by other characters, but not in a really "Valeska" way. In fact, it is also strange when Bruce is completely absent in these stories when the twins' obsession revolves around him.

Yeah, there is sooo much to explore, so that is why I am very curious to see how people construe their backgrounds, but usually it's just the repetition of the show with some added scenes and dialogues here and there 😅 I would love to see something a bit different, but well, I guess I am being very demanding 🤣 Don't worry about it and thanks so much for replying! 😘 I am now doing some research in different sites 🤣

It's a bit weird because even though I enjoyed the show, I have to say I merely watched it to see ma broski boys in action 🤣 so If I wasn't so lazy (and didn't have other unfinished projects) I would try to write something (my mind is already full of vague ideas OMGGG 😏🤔😂), but I don't really know much about other characters or subplots, so I would not be sure how to tackle it 🤔 Thanks again for the lovely discussion! 😊

Hi anon! Don’t you worry about your rambles, they’re not at all annoying! I find it rather fun to discuss the twins.

I’m sorry you’ve not been able to find the content you’re looking for; usually, I always run into comments on Tumblr or Pinterest about how you look for certain fics and when you can’t find them, then it’s time to try a hand at writing it yourself. I’ve done that and, even though I enjoy writing, it’s still pretty hard, especially to find a drive to do it when I really am not feeling it. With the twins not feeling real, I understand, ‘course I now think I’m at the point where I might read anything if I’m gifted with more content lol (though there are some tags that, if I see them, I don’t touch if I can help it).

I think, usually, with most writers, it’s easier to take a character like Jerome/Jeremiah and, instead of doing the tremendous work that comes with trying (emphasis trying) to change them, they do a few things and that’s enough for a road to recovery. Because, most of the time, they’re not writing to change the character, or even to make it realistic; sometimes they’re just writing, or they wanted to try a different aspect. There can be so many reasons and sometimes digging deep and getting a character 100% correct isn’t at the top of the list of what you want in that story. Personally, I’ve learned to broaden my sense of disbelief with characters and just enjoy what I manage to find, especially since the Gotham fic-oriented content is sooooo small 😢

After reading your last message, I actually went onto Ao3 and searched ‘character studies’ under the characters and yeah, there’s not much, I read a few and I honestly wasn’t sure what to think (not to call anyone out). It reminded me a lot of my years reading batjokes on fanfiction or, again, Ao3 where, if you search long enough, there’s a fic for almost all your needs. There have been some good gems in there that delve into character studies and helping these characters try and become better. Comparing that to Gotham’s arrangement of fics is sad, to say the least, but batjokes in all media have a lottttt of years to have such a collection of wonderful content. (Even if you’re only a Gotham fan, stretching out into the actual Batman fandom can be very rewarding, even if your next step is into the Nolan movies or even Batman in general cause you can replace the characters in your head if you really want too) I think one big problem with Oc’s is that, in a way, they’re easy to make, but in the worst way. You can create a character to put in the place you want, a blank space and they’re just nothing. This comes up a lot in anime type works, where the main character is so blah for the purpose of the audience (reader in our other case) to put themselves in the place of the main character. This also happens in a lot of movies as well, instead of fleshing the character out and allowing them to move and breathe the way THEY would and not how the audience thinks they themselves would. Because of this, oc’s can be very flat. There are the exception, of course although I have no examples since I don’t remember the last Oc story I read . . . *wracks brain* yeah no idea. Though I’m sure it’s somewhere in my saves.

Even if one doesn’t ship Jeremiah with Bruce, it’s very difficult to ignore/brush under the rug that there was definitely an obsession and that originally, during their weeks of spending time together, building the generator, there started a friendship. The first is very obvious, show-wise (and friendship kinda came with the territory) and the gay subtext can be there if you look at it that way. As much as an interesting character Ecco is, she’s both not important enough in the show (sorry Ecco lovers) or to Jeremiah or to anyone for that matter. While with Bruce and Jeremiah, with how their first meeting go’s and all the meetings that follow after (very willingly on Jeremiah’s part even though I’m sure before this NO ONE was allowed in the inner parts of his bunker for long periods. Probably not even Ecco) the relationship is much more pronounced than anything we’re given prior. I like to think that even though Bruce was manipulating Jeremiah when they first met, he actually did see him as his own person. Even though he, like Jim and Harvey, have personally bore witness to Jerome’s tyranny. (And that only twists the knife harder when Jeremiah eventually loses his mind because both him and Jeremiah saw him as his own person and in a way Jeremiah doesn’t become like Jerome, he becomes worse)

One could argue that since we didn’t see a ‘true’ way the Valeska’s love that any type of them showing affection might never seem very Valeska. Unless one looks at their reactions and interactions with Bruce as something more than just ‘wanting to kill him’ or ‘obsession’. This would be another reason I’m don’t read much in the oc-area or out of the romantic’s lol mainly because the moment they take Bruce out of the picture, everything seems off. Jerome, while willing to divide his attention, only does it with specific people, who are: Jim, Bruce, Jeremiah, and, on occasion, Oswald (though he’s much less in comparison to the ‘big three’). Other then them, we don’t see him hyper-focus on anyone else in the show, and if he does, it’s for a second and to simply kill them after. If these three aren’t integral to his behavior and actions then things feel flat and out-right ignoring his obsession with Bruce and his inner darkness can be unrealistic. With Jeremiah, this is much worse because in canon, once No Man’s Land starts, all he can think about is Bruce. Everything he does in that setting and before this even started was for Bruce. This type of obsession is . . . well, something that can’t simply be ignored, it’s a big part of his character and also very integral to just who he is after the spray. It may not be as bad at the start of the spray (because he’s too busy rebuilding Gotham in his image) but literally second to that desire is his connection with Bruce. If there were a summary of Jeremiah as a character it would be IMPOSSIBLE to write it without Bruce (same with Jerome though his might be a footnote, depending). So him suddenly focusing on someone else is . . . odd (even with Jim he doesn’t give his full attention too and, in the finale, Jeremiah only starts moving around and doing shit when he realizes that Bruce has come home early and that it’s time to finally come back to the spotlight). Especially since he’s supposed to be the ‘Joker’ in the Gotham world, which, technically speaking, means this obsession with the Bat (a.k.a Bruce) will only ever get worse from here (not to mention the fact he knows Batman is Bruce because he remembers the prophecy Ra’s told him, which we’re shown in the finale when he first sees the Bat and comment’s ‘you’ in a knowing way; this can be argued he’s just recognizing that this is what the prophecy was talking about or that it’s Bruce but personally I think both cause the prophecy was about both of them.).

It’s hard not to repeat things in canon though, believe me, I know and if you ever try writing a time travel story, it’s much worse cause then you have to change literally everything if you’re doing it that way. Nah, you know what you like; the only problem with that is it’ll be hard to find it most of the time. I wish you luck in searching! Hopefully, you’ll find something.

Same. My older brother introduced me to the show and his way of doing so was first telling me it was a batman show, that I would LOVE Oswald’s aesthetic and that there was a Joker-type character just introduced. I was sold lol. There’s been a lot of drama with the show though, concerning the twins and I honestly wish they’d just stuck with Jerome or if they did still use Jeremiah that he wasn't just . . . a backup plan for killing Jerome off. And, if they’d been allowed to go on for a few more seasons, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they would have also killed Jeremiah and a third (never heard of) Valeska twin (triplet) would show up, playing into the overall Joker lore about there having been three. 😒🤨😑 Which I find humorous because they did so well with Jerome, he was a well-rounded, fleshed out character and, as much as I love Jeremiah, it’s hard not to consider what we could have gotten if Jerome had lived *wistful sigh* I won’t lie that the drama hasn’t affected how I watch it too these days, or at least left me with a lasting impression. I was very invested in the first few seasons, it was a good show, minus the plot-holes and annoying characters (yes, some annoy me and there are some I can’t stand) but when the twins were on screen, it was probably the show at its best. If they had implicated them more so into the main story I probably would have watched all the way to the end (I can admit, I’ve never seen season five, but I saw many clips, have been completely spoiled and DID watch the finale lol and . . . I think I saw some of season four? Maybe, not sure anymore.) because when they’re also interacting with Bruce, perfection. I could watch that shit for days.

Also, if you did write it, it wouldn’t have to be about other characters if you don’t want it to be. You’re talking to me, who has never seen the last few seasons and when I wrote my first fic ‘Blindly Evident’ literally all my scenes I had to LOOK UP because I only knew the base of what the scene was even about lol. So sometimes, you can totally bullshit your way lol and somehow it turns out to be really good and you like it. Or it’s just snippets of small scenes with your characters (I’ve been writing a fic like that for awhile because it’s fun and easy and yet you can make it so thought provoking because these snippets are so smallll.) I would implore you to give it a go. Even if you have no idea what the other characters are doing or even what their names are.

alright, here are my thoughts on the unstoppable wasp novel! i’ve put the majority of my thoughts, and LOTS of spoilers, below the cut. short summary is that . . . i didn’t really like it at all :/

so, i’m gonna preface this by saying that i wanted to absolutely LOVE this book. it’s all about nadia and she is one of my all-time favorite characters and it’s so great that she got the spotlight in this way! i just really really wish i could, in good faith, say that the book was good, but i just can’t. and admittedly, i consider the unstoppable wasp comics to be nearly perfect, which is a high bar to hit, but there was just so much about this book that left a bad taste in my mouth.

first thing i want to mention is the role of the rest of the g.i.r.l.s. and when i say that, i mean that they had virtually no role. i genuinely wasn’t sure if i (the reader) was expected to have read the comics before the novel. on one hand, the first few chapters were spent pretty much summing up the comics, which is fine, especially because some readers may not have read the comics. on the other hand, if i hadn’t read the comics, there’s NO WAY i would’ve known anything about the other g.i.r.l.s!! they’re barely present in the plot of the book! they are present in one scene in the beginning, taina has a few lines throughout, and they’re more involved at the end, but a lot of the times they seemed more like wallpaper than actual characters. especially because of the frequency with which the author would throw in lines such as “that ethiopian place that shay likes” or “priya’s on-trend jeans” and just name-drop them without really giving them any substance. since i know the comics, i already know these characters--but if i was just reading the novel with no background? there’s no way i’d be able to keep them straight.

building off of what i said in that last point, i also wanted to mention that i listened to the women of marvel podcast interview with the author. something that i noticed is that she would always refer to the g.i.r.l.s as the “g.i.r.l. squad.” and that, i think, is the root of why i didn’t like how they were handled. it’s obviously pretty simple to explain their absence in the story by just noting that the whole point was that nadia was feeling alone and isolated from them. HOWEVER, in my opinion as a woman who has been in engineering . . . that doesn’t happen? nadia and the g.i.r.l.s are labmates--it’s right there in the title. they ARE the genius in action research labs. the “lab” isn’t just the location, it’s the people who make it up. by referring to them as “g.i.r.l. squad” instead of just “g.i.r.l.,” the author is changing the dynamics from “being a cohesive unit of girls who make up this incredible group and support each other in their science and goals” to “friend group who all happen to do science.” and as i mentioned, the random falling-out that happens in the book doesn’t happen to groups of the first type. being a girl in stem SUCKS. being in a stem class means that you’re automatically friends with the 1-2 other girls in there with you. and the people you work on projects with in a lab? the other girls who take the time to support you and have your back even though the odds are stacked against you? those are a whole different kind of friendships and i PROMISE they’re not wrecked by just forgetting to talk to each other. the girls that i worked with in college--the girls that i worked with now--it’s for survival. you don’t just fall apart like nadia apparently did from the g.i.r.l.s in this book.

okay. final bullet point on this topic. but in the women of marvel interview, the author said that she wanted to explore what could break apart the bonds that the g.i.r.l.s had formed. but on page 263, there’s the line “and if they had all just been a little better at communicating, maybe it wouldn’t have been so long before one of them realized that nadia was relying a little too closely on that little gold device.” so this deep dive into splitting the g.i.r.l.s apart, and barely giving shay, taina, ying, and priya a role in the story--was caused by MISCOMMUNICATION??? no freaking thanks LMAO. even without everything i’ve already mentioned, that trope is so lazy.

the writing style kinda bothered me at some points--i remember the discharge being described as “carbon dioxide” at one point, but like, just call it white foam. it’s so much easier and saying carbon dioxide pulled me out of what was happening. obviously this is a personal thing, not something objectively bad, but i still thought i’d mention it.

there seemed to be this point, around page 260, where it seems like the book flipped a switch. obviously, this is where the climax hit, but so many other things seemed to just randomly get pushed into place because the plot necessitated it? like, for example, nadia and the g.i.r.l.s are suddenly bffs again. even though, in nadia’s interior monologue, we’ve been hearing her resentment for them, it seemed like once the plot needed them to work together that they were able to do so without problem. and not only that, but it didn’t even feel earned? the book NEVER showed nadia and the g.i.r.l.s as actually like. being friends. (as i mentioned, not a choice i agree with, but still a fact.) so to have them all suddenly team up for the Big Boss Battle just felt weird and disengenuous to all of them. additionally, nadia went from defending margaret at all costs to suddenly thinking “oh yeah, she’s probably super evil. no big deal.” like WHAT??? the whole point of the first 250 pages was to show that nadia feels like margaret is the only person she can trust. all of a sudden she’s cool with her being evil??? make it make sense! you could see throughout the rest of the book that nadia was building up her Wrong Thoughts. sooooo much time was spent on it and we actually saw the development of how nadia felt. but to have her switch all that on a dime so that she can have her Right Thoughts now??? just in time for the Boss Battle? it just feels so unearned, since there’s nothing building to it. she just . . . changes her mind.

i also feel like writing a book where the protagonist, where the person whose perspective we’re following, is being MIND-CONTROLLED, but not revealing that mind control until the 11th hour (to validate the sudden switch from Wrong Thoughts to Right Thoughts) was just. a bit weird. i’m 22, but if i was reading this as a teenager, i’m not sure i would’ve quite gotten that the WHOLE BOOK was now being told by an unreliable narrator, with absolutely zero reliable information as a base (except the comics, of course).

ON PAGE 274. THERE IS ONE MENTION OF SHAY MAKING HER TELEPORTER PORTABLE. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE FEAT OF SCIENCE AND SO GREAT FOR SHAY WHY WAS THIS NOT EXPANDED ON IN THE SLIGHTEST????

alright, time to talk about the nadia-being-ace thing. so, ever since i started reading unstoppable wasp, i’ve interpreted nadia as aroace. her version of friendships, her attempts to change the topic when romance for herself is brought up--these are all very authentically ace experiences. and that was okay for me to just have her coded that way! the writer of the comics, jeremy whitley, has included TWO (2!!!) ace characters in his raven pirate princess series so i definitely allowed myself to entertain the idea that the ace aspects of nadia were intentional. i was also okay with it not being explicitly mentioned in the comics--sure it would’ve been cool, but i understand that there are 18 issues TOTAL and it would be hard to fit the entirety of nadia’s story in there. BUT, when the author of this book mentioned that nadia was ace, and jeremy whitley confirmed that he’d been writing her as ace, it was awesome and super validating!! first of all, nadia being the first canonically ace marvel character--even just by word of god--is so freaking incredible and just adds to my enjoyment of the story. i’m very glad that we got confirmation and that i can continue reading the comics knowing, at the very least, that my ace reading of them is backed up by the canon (!!!!!). however, the author of this novel 100% used it as a marketing tactic which is super shitty. i was obviously going to read it anyway, since it was about nadia, but i do know people who bought it specifically because the author mentioned nadia being ace. and there was maybe one throwaway line in the novel about how nadia was only interested in romance ~theoretically.~ that’s not rep. in fact, it’s even less rep than the comics, which represented nadia being ace (at least in my opinion) far more authentically than this novel did. i’d honestly even go so far as to say it was riiiight up against the line of queerbaiting--yes nadia is canonically queer, but only by word of mouth, and it’s not mentioned even once in the story. that’s bad. using ace people for marketing--baiting them into buying your book on the promise of rep which we already have so little of--is so so shitty. yes, i am glad that we got that confirmation from jeremy whitley who never used this to promote the comics and didn’t even mention it until now, but i genuinely cannot believe that this author (who is bi! i checked her twitter!) effectively used it to market her awful book. honestly if the book weren’t bad enough already, to add this on top of it is even WORSE.

in the same vein, the author mentioned ying and shay being in a wlw relationship in the same interview where she mentioned nadia being ace. ying and shay are barely in the novel and EVEN WORSE, their relationship is kind of treated as an “obstacle” that nadia and the other g.i.r.l.s have to overcome in order to start working as a unit again. also bad!!!!!

okay. i think i’ve got this and one more bullet point, so we’ll see how it goes. but the way that the science in this book was handled was atrocious. sure, we had the cute science facts, but there is one (1) paragraph on page 311 about the g.i.r.l.s doing science for the sake of doing science and helping their community. IN THE WHOLE BOOK. you know a great way to demonstrate to women that they shouldn’t go into stem fields? write a cautionary book about the ~dangers of ai and data collection~ AS IF ANYONE LIVING IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW DOESN’T KNOW THAT SHIT. jesus fucking christ. the comics showed all of this great science by the way of the g.i.r.l.s papers, shay making her teleporter at home, defusing the bomb in ying’s head, recreating the vision gloves, tai’s sports robots . . . this book had NONE of that. it literally just had the evils that we see in the news EVERY DAY. that’s not what you show people to get them excited, and i find it really fucking weird that ANYONE greenlit a book about characters who support and encourage women to go into stem fields with the overall message of “science bad!” like. how the fuck was this plot approved. in the women of marvel interview, the author claims that she’s written about women in science before--and i believe her. i just don’t think that she’s ever actually spoken to a woman in science.

and lastly, i have a huge issue with the role of hope in the book. by that, i mean that the novel is called “built on hope” but hope is literally never a theme throughout the book? so yet another instance of the book building off the comics without any form of payoff. the unstoppable wasp comics are kind, and loving, and hopeful. this book is callous and condescending and seems more concerned with its sassy one-liners about white dudes and ham-fisted pop culture references than LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE, including hope. nadia claims to love her friends but spends the majority of the book shitting on them. nadia lies to janet to “avoid hurting her” but the end of unstoppable wasp 10 showed the flip side of the situation where nadia and jan realize that although janet was hiding the truth about hank from nadia, nadia wanted to hear the information anyway!! and i just--WHY would you take a character who has been explicitly used in the past to introduce girls to women in stem (the interviews with real people in the back of the comics!) AND THEN WRITE HER INTO A FUCKING CAUTIONARY “TECHNOLOGY BAD” STORY??? it’s SO discordant with the comics and i genuinely hope that anyone reading this book goes and read the comics themselves, which are incredible and a bajillion times better than this book in all aspects. i’m finishing this “review” a lot more fired up then when i started typing it but i honestly can’t believe that marvel greenlit THIS and not like. 2 more comics.

so, yeah, those are my thoughts. kudos to anyone who actually made it through the whole thing (if anyone does), it’s egregiously long but i needed to put my thoughts somewhere! tldr: i will not be recommending this to my mom.

September 10: The 100 1x06 Fog of War

Mmmm watching another ep and it’s been less than six months since the last one?! * jinxes self *

Bellarke date at the outside cafe. (WHY IS THIS OUTSIDE CAFE NOT IN MORE FICS? WHY IS IT NOT IN MY FICS?)

I don’t always love Clarke’s art tbh but I do love her Mount Weather sketch.

“You won’t be by yourself.” They are canonically Soft with each other.

I have a hard time believing they would wait two days just sitting on their hands, Abby or no Abby. YOU GUYS WERE THE LEADERS. JUST LEAD STUFF.

“We’re at war. We’ve all done things,” is, like, first, beyond the point, because even in war, one doesn’t usually attack civilian villages. (Unless one is a terrorist.) And second, it’s weird that Bellamy would be defending Finn? Not really sure how to read that. Unless his hatred of Grounders is truly that intense, which is possible. And third, are they really still at war? Because after attacking the dropship, the Grounders have done... literally nothing? Like it’s a semi-war scenario.

“Next round’s on me.” Do they have to.... pay for things...? With what lol?

“Salvaged Monty’s still. Now if we could only salvage Monty.” Someone here has a sense of humor. Also lol @ everyone at Camp Jaha using a teenager’s illegal still.

Really, the “pardon for surviving” should not include time on the ground, because pardons aren’t forward looking. Also they bring back the idea of trying Finn later. They just don’t want to deal with Murphy and Finn, and don’t really see the massacre of Grounders as a big deal, which, I am a Sky Person partisan to the last, does not reflect well on them. I think also they still haven’t figured out what tf their judicial system on the ground is, and just don’t want to deal with that yet either. Which isn’t a great excuse but it’s of a piece with how this show deals with society-building questions in general. (By... not.)

And Finn still doesn’t even feel bad.

And Murphy thinks Clarke and Finn are still together...? I guess that makes sense given how long he was away. He’s ALWAYS behind on delinquent gossip.

Clarke to Murphy: “Just because they pardoned you doesn’t mean I have.” Another line that should be iconic.

If Mount Weather is the reason they never heard from any other Ark Stations then they should have heard from more of them after S2 just putting that out there.

Raven is so beautiful.

And I’m sorry but she’s completely in love with Clarke here.

“You and your friends are not soldiers...” Hmmmm except in a certain sense they kind of are. Love this s2 adults versus delinquents conflict though.

Anyway I realize this is just to get them going back to Mount Weather but they were apparently doing this radio mission to get more Guards from other stations, which never happened, which sort of reminds me of Day Trip and the ‘winter supplies’ excursion when apparently winter doesn’t exist in the future anyway.

Literally only now at the credits.... Why am I like this?

So Maya couldn’t survive on the ground, obviously, because blood isn’t good enough, it has to be bone marrow, which, fine, for plot purposes--but what if she could???

“I know the plan was to assimilate them into the gene pool.” COMPLETELY forgot about that. So they did have a reason for being so nice to them. That is a rather long term plan though...

With the delinquent blood, they’ll “live longer and feel better.” I wonder what the sickness rate is, then. What the quality of life is, low vitamin d aside.

“If I agree to harvest those kids, then I won’t deserve to see [the outside] again.”

That Finn is a good tracker is, like, not a retcon in the sense that this was true in season 1, but still a semi retcon in the sense that nothing in the very early episodes implies he’s Mr. Earth Skills. (Unlike, say... Wells.)

Privileged Ark people really do just throw rules around and up and down however they like. Like, Abby clearing her daughter’s friend because “he was trying to save his friends” even though what he did was objectively much worse than pretty much anything the 100 were imprisoned for? Or other people killed for? Hmmm,, yeah, okay.

Jaha’s death wish transformed into a lazy acceptance that he is invincible is truly one of the best character arcs on this show imo. Infuriating but amazing.

“How many times on the Ark did we go two days without water?”

He recognizes the prison as a train station, which is not objectively surprising but I bet the Grounders don’t know what it is. Somehow. Since memory isn’t a thing in the future either.

On the one hand, it’s reasonable to think that Finn’s attack was coordinated from above but on the other hand, these two prisoners literally could not have ordered it, because they have been... imprisoned... the entire time. And I mean truly putting two Sky People who could not themselves have been involved in another Sky Person’s murder spree into some sort of Saw scenario in response to that murder spree really isn’t “justice” in any sense of the word. Like truly the JD in me is just SCREAMING. There is no nexus between the people you have and the person you’re angry at, other than “Sky Person” but the thread is so tangled you’re just.... throwing around bloodshed for lolz. (I know it’s a test and that part isn’t dumb but the scaffolding of the test is DUMB.)

I am still not over that someone gave Jasper a stuffed toy bear as a thank you for giving Maya blood. Also, it looks like... an alarm clock?

I like Dante but every time he says “Jasper” it just creeps me out. Maybe it’s the way he’s, uh, playing him.

It is 100% true that Mount Weather was not meant to last that long. At least not in the sense of ‘as a closed facility.’

Ridiculous as it is to pardon Finn AND take him adventuring AND give him a gun, I like the tension between him and the others, that they have officially forgiven him, and want to still love him, but are wary of him, scared of him, for good reason. For all that people are constantly ‘doing bad things’ and yelling at each other about it, this scenario doesn’t really have a parallel anywhere else in the canon.

“According to Clarke, before the bombs, there were buildings everywhere here. I’m guessing some of the had access to the bunker. So we’re looking for ruins. Anything man-made.”

Bellamy says he and O aren’t under the Guard command. But in a way, aren’t they? Like aren’t the Guard basically in authority over all Arkers? I know I’m overthinking but does he see himself as more delinquent than Arker? Especially with the “our people” are in Mount Weather.

All those mice.... Or rodents....

What a scenario: Clarke and Finn hiding from the acid fog in a weird little personal bunker where they once fucked, and now there’s a dead body in it, and Finn put it there. Not even Olav can top this.

Parking garage as tomb. Who would protect a parking garage with a big-ass steal door that protects cars from radiation? If it does lead to Mount Weather (no recollection if it does) I guess it could be... part of it? Idk. Nice aesthetic though.

Bellamy is very comfortable calling people Sir. Polite young man.

So Clarke’s Dad’s watch returns to Clarke. I can’t remember what ultimately happened to it. Is it basically tainted now?

Monty’s obscene jealousy of Maya just gets me every single time. Makes up for the horrendous second hand embarrassment I’m getting from the rest of this scene.

“Hey, it’s pizza day! Who’s hungry?” uhhhhhhhhhhmmmmm So natural. Cute dress though.

How did she figure out the breach wasn’t an accident? Or that there is surveillance? Anyway now that she knows she was experimented on, and that Jasper was experimented on, one would assume she is pissed. One would assume that’s part of why she shows them the Grounders. Also to stop Jasper perhaps from embroiling his people even more with (her own) untrustworthy people. Because truly it is in part to save them, but it’s also a real risk to herself, admitting this terrible thing she’s been a part of.

“To get you to agree to be her blood brother.” He’s not wrong but that language is sooooo jealous--both revealing the threat he feels (because Jasper is his ‘brother’) and diminishing the JasperMaya relationship (which he knows to be romantic, and is turning familiar.)

Why did the show ever try to top the pure horror of the Grounder Torture Prison?

“What are we supposed to do?” / “Die.” Another Iconic Exchange. This is Monty’s morality: uncompromising. Are the standards he sets for himself hypocritical or consistent? Also, some foreshadowing lol.

I wonder what Monty’s allegiance is to the other kids... Would he have irradiated the Mountain for them if Jasper were safe? Legit question because he defects to his mom’s side pretty fast in S3, and he would 100% leave Mount Weather through the side door just like Clarke, at this point, which Jasper refuses to do even if it were possible. I am intrigued by this scene and the switching of plans/different points of view.

So this is the revelation that the acid fog is a Mount Weather weapon. I always really liked that twist.

Okay so this explains why they didn’t get to the other stations, because they choose to keep the tower up to listen to Mount Weather, but it’s actually not a tough call bc if you defeat Mount Weather and take your people back, then you can get rid of the blocking signal, and then find your other people, so win-win, you just have to go in order and on that note, why did it take 3 months to find only one station??

There are a hella lot of storylines in this episode. I completely forgot about Jaha and Kane and Lexa.

Kane’s continuing death wish makes him utterly unreasonable. What in a million years makes you think that the Grounders value sacrifice as opposed to just being sadists? I mean, you don’t know. You’re imposing your value system and also your thought processes on them. You’re also assuming that if one of you killed the other, the survivor would actually get something, like a chance to negotiate, which is probably not true--in fact, Gustus basically told you as much with “We’ll hear the terms of your surrender form the survivor.” Winning means nothing except you get to surrender!! And probably die!! They are not coming to you in good faith is what I’m trying to say and having watched the whole season I know I am Right.

“You didn’t order the massacre.” / “Not that one.” Honestly dude get over it lol. Interesting that Jaha, although he has transformed in some ways, keeps to the old lines, about survival, the human race--and our people, if the human race is broader than just the Ark, which it is, and no big deal. So in some ways his morality has not changed at all, at its core.

Look, I’m sorry, not to be that person, but he probably would have been better off killing Lexa there. I mean, I know he’s choosing ‘an innocent’ in his mind but... what a power move to behead the Commander WHILE you’re her prisoner. Good old Jaha, smart and quick and sure of himself.

Just uh not quick enough at murdering I guess.

I’m no Lexa fan but that was an excellent entrance and it remains an excellent entrance. Also while I never thought she was as smart as people said, because name me another tactical decision she made that was actually good, this was a smart ploy. And probably the most subtle thing any Grounder character ever did, even if it does end with her basically beating Jaha up ‘as a message’ as if she were a gangster.

Is this the episode that introduces Blood Must Have Blood? Already Tired of it tbh.

This Clarke and Finn scene is so sad. I realize that they purposefully made him unredeemable at this point, that this story line was always intended to be the method by which he was written off, and that there’s only so much awkwardness you can write around this scenario, but nevertheless it would have been interesting to see Finn in the long term, in a way. Not redeemed.. I don’t know. Whatever I’m thinking it’s not in the range of this show, though, for sure.

Did Jasper and Monty tell all of the 47 everything? To get them to volunteer? (Answer: No, but they told at least Harper and Miller, maybe a few more.)

“How high are you right now?” We were SO robbed of more intoxicated!Monty scenes.

“There’s been a Wallace in this office since the bombs.” So glad to know we immediately reverted to some sort of pseud-monarchy post-nuclear war. That said it’s only been 97 years so that’s like 3 Wallaces tops.

Prioritizing the radio also means of course admitting that getting the 47 out of MW is a priority for Abby/Ark PTB, which wasn’t exactly clear before.

I’ve never been a fan of the “Build a brace for yours” line and I’m still not, because I think conflating physical and mental injuries is not exactly helpful, but I guess I appreciate it as a look into Raven’s mind--Raven, who has never really understood mental scars and never really does--and the soft way she says it is a sort of forgiveness. Not really forgiveness she has the right to offer, and in a way a very brash thing to do, because this was literally a war crime that her best friend committed, but nevertheless.

Jaha: appears. Everyone else: what the absolute fuck.

So on that mission they accomplished... literally nothing they set out to do lol.

What is that random shot of Camp Jaha doing there? They’re not within sight of it. They’re still where they set up tents.

I want to point out that this is the FIRST time the Grounders have demanded that the Sky People “leave” or implied in any way that they consider the Sky People to be on “their” land, and that this was never an issue in Season 1, when their beef seemed to be for things like crossing the river at Mount Weather, accidentally dropping their flares on a Grounder village, and torturing a Grounder spy. But I guess at this point the narrative needed to focus on something because the actual reason for the feud, which is roughly, we accidentally pissed each other off and then kept on retaliating, doesn’t play very well or make the Grounders, who were rehabilitated this season, very sympathetic. (Guess who still has zero sympathy lololol?)

Stray notes after watching The Last Jedi

Or: why does this movie just keep getting worse whenever I remember it?

The notes are after the cut just in case someone hasn’t seen the film yet or doesn’t want a long ass bullet point post in their dash. Some of them are serious and well thought-out, some are nitpicky and some are there just for the heck of it.

“Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.” - Why, that’s just peachy, Rian! Too bad the future your selling is a little shit.

In general, Rian Johnson doesn’t seem to have much respect for the past. See tathrin’s post about all the things established in TFA that were turned upside down in this film, but I think Johnson doesn’t have much consideration for the original trilogy either, reducing Chewbacca to a background character and trying to replace “May the Force be with you” with some other, less inspired line.

Seriously, why are they saying “Godspeed”? Did monotheism reach a galaxy far, far away and they now, suddenly, have a notion of God? And, while were at it, why is “treacherous snake” a thing, now? Are there snakes in the Star Was universe? ‘Cause, so far, all animals have been on the fantastic side of things. What else is there? Do they have kittens??? That’s an important question...

The movie had A LOT of hamfisted comic relief. Of course there were some honestly funny scenes (I will forever laugh at Rey feeling the Force with her hand), but most of the jokes felt very out of place. For instance, the first scene, with Hux and Poe. I laughed my ass off at that interaction, but that’s an SNL sketch, not a Star Wars scene. I was half expecting Matt, the radar technician, to show up.

Seriously, someone should tell Rian Johnson that he isn’t directing Guardians of the Galaxy. In more than one scene, the excess of jokes killed what should’ve a truly great, emotional moment.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much indifference do I feel towards porgs?

The ammount of queerbaiting that went into promoting this film was insane. Look, actors on franchises like this one have media training, so whenever, say, Oscar Isaac ran his mouth about the possibility of Finn/Poe being canon, he was at least authorized by Disney to do so (worst case scenario, he was instructed to sell this narrative). I didn’t particularly care about the ship and I think Poe Dameron could’ve died in TFA without any harm to the franchise, but to hamfist that non-sensical romance between Finn and Rose after feeding the fans’ hopes for a gay pairing was, in my opinion, downright cruel.

And don’t even get me started on Poe and Rey’s meaningful gaze at the end of the film, with Poe going all “I know” as if he’s Han Solo or some hot shit like that! Poe/Rey is the worst possible ship to become canon. Yes, the worst. Yes, you heard me, worse than Reylo.

Speaking of Reylo: after TFA, I said that I low-key shipped them ‘cause that’s the kind of fucked up ship I like. Look, there are people in this website who like to wear diapers and want to fuck Pennywise, so, screw you, I’m not apologizing for wanting to read fics about a fictional pairing made up of two adults. HOWEVER, this is not the sort of thing I want to be canon. From the get go, my opinion on Rey’s official love life has been “either she ends up with Finn or she ends up alone”. That being said, I think they handled the relationship between her and Kylo Ren very well in this film. I’m glad they didn’t deny the fucked up sexual tension that was going on there, especially coming from Ren’s side, and chose to play into it. A failed redemption arc fits them perfectly and Kylo Ren’s “please” when he asks Rey to rule beside him was a great moment for the character and one of the few truly emotional moments of the film.

But that thing were they get to hit on each other through the Force, sharing sad stories and touching hands? Yeah, I’m pretty certain I’ve read that fic. Actually, I’m pretty certain I’ve read about three fics like that.

Let’s keep on the Kylo Ren track for now, then: he did get some very nice character development in this film. The Last Jedi was more his than any other character’s, even Luke. For a minute there, before the movie came out, I thought they were going to make some changes to him due to the whole backlash, but they went full “overgrown angsty kid” with him in a way that actually made him more compelling. I like the way Luke’s fear ended up pushing a conflicted teenager into the Dark Side and that Kylo is still very much stuck at that moment. As usual with Sith and Sith by-products, Kylo Ren is moved by anger, and his anger feels much more real after this little bit of backstory.

Who is Snoke, though? Are they going to explain that in the next movie? It feels like they should’ve done it in this one, but I hope they at least give him some context before the trilogy is over.

Sooooo... Did your conflicted antagonist cladded in black, with black hair falling all over his face, just trick his bald, deformed Dark Lord by using his occlumency powers? *Owen Wilson voice* Wow.

“The Supreme Leader is dead. Long live the Supreme Leader.” - A perfect example of a really amazing moment botched by comic relief, ie, Snoke’s little tongue falling out of his dead body.

After the film ended, @robogigante complained a lot about Hux’s transformation from an actual, threatening villan into a punchline, and, you know what? He’s right. There’s a scene there that looks like a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do I hate evil, square-headed BB-8?

I’m sort of glad Rey’s parents aren’t anyone important. Star Wars relies too much on heritage and it’s a nice change having a hero who isn’t Space Jesus or Space Jesus’ direct lineage. Her scene in the cave was incredibly beautiful.

They did point to something else in TFA, though, implying heavily that her origin was important and that Kylo Ren already knew about her. That was some Moffat level of badly written plot twist right there.

There’s something Emma Watson-y about Daisy Ridley. This is neither a compliment nor a complaint, just something I hadn’t noticed before.

Both Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver grew a lot as actors since the last movie, especially Driver. Even though it’s still hard to take Kylo Ren seriously sometimes due to Driver’s cry-baby face, he’s way more convincing in his rage and intensity than he was in TFA, where his acting felt a little too mechanical.

However, some of the other actors aren’t living up to their potential. John Boyega’s charisma is extremely underused and I know for a fact that Domnhall Gleeson can do a lot better than what he was given here. In a couple of scenes, even Hamill and Fisher seemed a little uncomfortable in their roles.

“Shit, we’ve already signed Lupita’s check! Gotta shove her in here, somewhere!” - I’m so sorry, honey. You are so beautiful and talented... You deserved way better than that.

Kelly Marie Tran is adorable and I absolutely love her in interviews and such. She seems like a delightful person. However, her character was completely unnecessary. Her only purpose was to serve as a future love interest to Finn, and I’ve made my thoughts about that pairing quite clear already.

“...it’s saving the ones we love...” - BITCH, YOU’VE KNOWN HIM FOR WHAT? A DAY?

As a matter of fact, all of that storyline felt completely unnecessary. It was as if the writers didn’t know what to do with Finn so they gave him a spunky sidekick and a pointless mission just to kill time. I found myself wishing he had spent the whole movie in a coma, and that’s really sad, because I really like John Boyega and was hoping he would become a strong protagonist for the franchise.

Another thing @robogigante pointed out (and I’m quoting him ‘cause I know he’s not making a post of his own) is that Holdo had no reason whatsoever to hide her plan from Poe or anyone else in the Resistance. She just... didn’t like Poe Dameron that much...

Excessive jokes aside, casino planet was okay and helped flesh out the Star Wars universe a little bit more. However, much like Phasma, Benicio Del Toro’s character (whose name I already forgot) was just another Boba Fett, all flash and no substance, and I particularly hate that “squeaky clean abused little children representing hope” crap. It’s one of the tackiest tropes in existence.

I did get the feeling that that kid is going to join the Resistance on the next movie. Like they’re going to do a ten year jump to justify Leia’s disappearance/death. It would also help the Rebels to get their shit back together, Kylo Ren to gain more control over the First Order and Rey to learn some more about the Force in order to meet her fate. The existence of that child is still horrible and that ending was so over the top I can’t even put it into words, but it’s a good hook for a leap that, if handled well, could be very good for the story.

I also got the feeling that they originally inteded to kill one member of the original trio per film. That would’ve been cool. Too bad Leia will have to die off screen.

Was it just me or is the timeline in this movie really weird? Poe’s plan seems to take place entirely in a day, maybe two, while Rey apparently spends at least a week in Luke’s island.

I’m glad Carrie Fisher got to have at least one badass Force user scene before dying. Her flight among the debris of the Rebel cruiser was a beautiful reminder of how powerful the Force can be, on par with Luke’s astral projection, not to mention a gorgeous scene in its own right.

Holdo and Leia definitely had a torrid love affair after the Organa-Solo divorce came through. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do I love the crystal foxes?

There was a preoccupying absence of wipe transitions and epic soundtrack inserts. Actually, I don’t even remember hearing any music at all. The editing was way too conservative. It didn’t even feel like a Star Wars movie, sometimes.

How is it possible that The Force Awakens was basically a remake of A New Hope and still felt more daring that The Last Jedi? Look, we already know you’re not killing any of the characters ‘cause they have to come back for the next installment, but raise those stakes a little bit, jeez! Give Kylo Ren and Snoke more conflict before their face-off, give Rey an opportunity to actually scare Luke with something that matters, give Finn and Poe a mission that actually means something to the Resistance, not a MacGuffin to keep them busy... Anything!

The Last Jedi is actually an okay-ish movie, to be honest, but, in a way, I think I disliked it even more than the prequels. Sure, The Phantom Menace is objectively a much worse film, but at least it had soul. George Lucas’ midichlorian and CGI packed soul, but soul nonetheless. The Last Jedi has nothing. I know Star Wars movies are all about the money, let’s not delude ourselves that this is in anyway high art, but this one just felt like the biggest money grabber of all. There is no personal investment in it whatsoever and no sign of what makes Star Wars Star Wars in the first place.

When’s Lando coming back?

BONUS: I am never watching a fucking 3D movie again in my life. The background always seems out of focus, it’s too expensive and I hate putting glasses on top of my glasses. I don’t care if I have to wait a month to watch the next Star Wars, I don’t care if I get spoilers, I’m not watching anything in 3D ever again.

This week I’m really feeling the disappointment that I’m not here, 6 weeks in to a new Star Trek series, eagerly awaiting and watching each new episode every week with my family, like I expected and hoped. look, okay, it’s one thing to establish new things when you’re making up a series - but this is exactly the problem with saying your series is a prequel and part of the prime universe which has had 5 series worth of content, to then contradict it all by making up nonsense using established canon ... What’s the point? Why not just make a reboot? Set it in a parallel universe, which it obviously is. If you’re so desperate to get away from canon then don’t tell us it’s part of it! But more importantly, if you’re that desperate to ignore it and rewrite it and change it ... why not just make something new?

how is it that this show is serialised and yet feels more disjointed than say, the serial arcs of DS9? every episode it’s like ... Stuff Happens ... and it’s very very loosely connected to what happened before, but seems to be mostly at random?? like, reflecting on what I just watched, not a lot of anything happened? their plots were literally, Sarek is attacked and they rescue him because space telepathy is a thing, so Michael can have some drama I guess ... and Lorca sleeps with the Admiral who realises he’s a dangerous asshole, recommends her for a dangerous mission, then refuses to rescue her. that’s it.

Like dude, I just rewatched DS9′s Duet and In the Hands of the Prophets last night. This rubbish doesn’t even hold a candle to it??? Kira’s entire emotional arc in season 1 from Emissary, through Past Prologue, Battle Lines, Progress, Duet, and In The Hands of the Prophets, is more nuanced, engaging, and well crafted than Michael’s emotional arc as the protagonist of Discovery. and they weren’t even allowed to do proper serialisation at that point??

Chapters 3-4: I continue to metaphorically shove this fic in my face every chance I get because, yessssss, this is what I am here for! The promise of Maul taking Anakin instead of Satine, the effect that will have on Obi-Wan and the relationship between them, that definitely keeps me eagerly reading this one, but also that I’m enjoying the angst that comes along with the ride before that–that Anakin is so angry and closed off, that he’s distant and won’t open up, that Obi-Wan is trying, just wants him to be happy, but doesn’t know how to reach him, that their relationship is so complicated and difficult, even when they care so much about each other. Chapter 4 has a really great conversation between them where you see that they’re both trying, that this isn’t something either of them want, that on some level they do want to fix it, but it’s hard for both of them, and it just makes me love them both so very much all over again. And then the end of that chapter is where shit has hit the fan and it’s genuinely creepy, ahhhh, I am so ready for more of this, SO READY. Especially because the characterization has been really lovely so far and I can feel how much they both care, how much everyone cares, and that gives me a warm feeling, even as I am ready to lose my mind over the suspense! Enjoy! This is part of a larger universe of Obi-Wan accidentally becoming Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, but you can read it on its own, you have context enough just from that, if you wish! And, oh, this fic was so gorgeous and heart-warming and well-written and beautifully characterized, it’s spot on to each one of these characters, and so incredibly engaging. This entire fic series has been wonderful, it’s one of the best things in fandom, to see circumstances not piling up against our heroes, to see them have better options and how they grab onto them with both hands, and this fic shows how this world is easing towards something better, how it feels better just in the air around them, in a way that is so spot on to canon. But it’s more than that, too, it’s just plain entertaining, it has great bits of worldbuilding from canon and then expanding on those in delightful and hilarious ways–I literally had to put my reader down to laugh for a minute about Anakin’s first mission, just picturing the imagery there has me grinning all over again. It’s a great example of how much I love Anakin and Ahsoka sitting around with the clones, trying to explain the Jedi and their ways, and it’s this really joyful scene that made me fizzy with delight, but also HILARIOUS. Or getting a chance to see Obi-Wan working himself so hard, but also stepping back to get some sleep, which is building on pieces that have come before, that the Force feels not quite clear enough to guide them again yet, but a little better, enough that even when something immense is looming on every sense he has, he has the support to take a break, to find the peace of mind for it, and that’s so much better, because they have breathing room now. And, of course, Sidious’ pov is always a delight because he’s such a great menacing villain and his hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi is always a joy because he just hates him sooooo muuuuuuch. Everything about this was wonderful and I encourage the reading of the whole thing, but also you can start here just to have a fun, hopeful fic that made me happy, even when I know shit’s about to go down soon. ✦ Broken by lilyconrad, obi-wan/anakin & ahsoka, NSFW, sith!obi-wan, dark themes, pay attention to the warnings!, 38.6k The Twins are unstoppable enforcers of the Emperor’s will, the sun and moon that hang in the black void of his rule. Chapter 9: This is an update rec and will focus on this chapter, rather than the fic as a whole. So, this was the final chapter for this fic and it’s just as sad as I expected, it was exactly what was coming the entire time, and yet I thought I was prepared. But between letting go of this particularly story and the actual events of it, yeah, okay, I was definitely crying by the end. But I wouldn’t have had the story end any other way than what it did, after the previous chapters had the resurfacing memories the way they did, there was never any other way this could have gone, not really, and given that it was a satisfying ending, that it went out as it was the entire way–a story about how broken these characters wound up being, that they loved each other so much and that allowed them to survive, that there was so little beyond that bond that could reach them anymore. But Ahsoka was there and they remembered her and it was so satisfying for that. But also that, ultimately, this was a chapter about Obi-Wan and Anakin and this awful thing that had happened to them and the swirls of beauty that they’d made of it. It was about these characters resurfacing again, not just the good but all the bad that Sen and Koh had done as well, that they could find the strength to rise above it one more time. The balance between saving Ahsoka and what they had to do for themselves, between their fury at the world around them and the clones trying to attack them and the good they struggled to find in themselves, the balance between fear and peace, all of it was just exactly what I hoped for from this final chapter. That it touched me as a fan of these characters, their relationship, and this author’s work. It was a satisfying ending in that it went exactly how it had to go, even if it was sad and brought tears to my eyes, it was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time, that there was peace and hope even amongst all the tragedy of what had happened to the two of them. And, oh, if I hadn’t been there before it, the epilogue absolutely would have brought tears to me as well (and it did), because the galaxy keeps moving forward. And, for all that this was a horrible situation for them, the fic does such a gorgeous, gorgeous job of how they were together in this, that it saved them from something that would have been worse, in a different way, that it’s not entirely awful (the clothes gave me so much hope, that warm touch of comfort that I needed not to be an emotional wreck!). The ending was beautiful and bittersweet and hopeful and sad and absolutely everything it needed to be. Such a lovely experience of a fic! ✦ Stoking the Hearth by ilyena_sylph, Merfilly, obi-wan/anakin/padme, NSFW, 8.4k Finally, all three of them have time and the ability to get away and share one another. Holy hell, this fic was amazing for me, it absolutely ruined me for the night and was beautifully written and practically could have been targetted to my exact wants and desires. It’s definitely a happy fic, it’s pwp but with really beautiful characterization that is just dead on to what I’m looking for from this fandom and all of it was really, really ridiculously hot. But it’s also that it balanced the dynamics of these three characters, that it’s somewhere between Obikin&Anidala and Obianidala, that when Obi-Wan and Padme interaction, there’s a spark of real appreciation for each other there, but it’s also largely about Anakin, that they’re both so in love with him. When Padme and Obi-Wan work together, it’s about Anakin. When Padme is riding his face and turns back to watch Obi-Wan gently opening Anakin up with his fingers, then pushing into him, she loves the way he wants Anakin, the way he turns his full attention on her husband and lifts his hips to a better angle to fuck him properly, and she enjoys that, too. It’s just the right blend of how these characters interact, that Anakin is the center of them, even as they lightly touch and connect with each other. But, oh, the sex, when it starts with laying Anakin out on the bed, how he is pinned down by their weight and they take care of him, that it combines with Padme on his face while Obi-Wan is inside him, that it’s just this side of sub-space and he’s so happy and content there, that he loves them taking pleasure from him, he loves being so full he could burst, that he can feel how much they enjoy fucking him, that’s it, that’s what I want a thousand times, especially when it’s as ridiculously beautiful and hot as this one was. I read the whole thing practically tripping over myself to get to the next page, because I loved how affectionate and warm and loving this was in the way they touched Anakin and cared for him, the way he could settle because they were paying attention to him in the best way, because he was wholly and completely theirs. This is definitely getting a reread at some point in the future, just because it made my heart and id so happy. ✦ Tired Soldiers by LibraryMage, obi-wan & ahsoka, 1.4k After leaving Malachor, Ahsoka goes to Tatooine to find Obi-Wan. This was a short but very lovely look at two people who have been through so much, who are two of the few people left who really know what these losses mean, yet there’s something of hope and comfort here between them. Both in that they’ve found each other again and that there’s hope for the future, that their grief can be shared and lightened for the help. I have a brief caveat in that the ending of the fic is complicated, that it’s one that took me a bit of time to sit with to feel the resolution of it, but the longer I did so, the more I thought that it couldn’t have ended any other way, and so I would advise against going into this fic with expecations, even once you start reading. I realize that’s vague and potentially unhelpful, but without getting into spoilers, that’s the best I can do! And my caveat is not meant to turn readers away, but to put them in the right headspace, because I really, really enjoyed this fic a lot, it was a fascinating look at a universe that went differently for the Jedi and where that path led them. That the Republic survived, the Jedi retreated due to mistrust from the public, and suddenly the twins of the recently dead Anakin Skywalker show up on the Jedi’s doorstep to learn. This tumbles Knight Caleb Dume into a situation that he’d never expected, to be asked to train Leia Skywalker, and then where shit starts hitting the fan from there. It’s a very engaging story about a plot that’s simmering in the background until it explodes on the reader (more than once), that it’s all about Caleb feeling out of his depth, but being exactly the right person for this story anyway. I love the use of the characters and the different paths their lives took here, that there’s a reason for everything that’s happening that you won’t understand until later, and I thought the build-up to that plot and those reveals was very nicely done. I would have read this fic just for the plot, just for Caleb teaching Leia while Ahsoka teaches Luke, because those elements were a lot of fun! But it’s the characters that are the other half of the heart and soul of this fic, that Leia is so Leia in her interaction with Caleb, that this is absolutely a Kanan I can recognize, even as he’s on a vastly different path in life, that he’s still somehow the guy I remember from Rebels. There’s really great Kanan/Hera interaction, that they manage to gravitate towards each other without overtaking the story, it’s exactly the right balance and true to the spirit of their relationship, too. The fic achieved exactly what it set out to do and, boy, was I reading in a hurry for the entire last quarter of this fic because I couldn’t stop turning the page! It’s a great fic for if you’d like a divergent timeline or AU scenario, but also it’s a great fic if you like these characters, especially if you wanted to see Caleb as a full Jedi. Or if you just want a cool little plotful story to read! ✦ Abduction by Mishael, thrawn & eli, 26k After the battle of Atollon, just as Thrawn is mourning the absence of a trusted companion, an unexpected opportunity presents itself. But that’s not the only unexpected thing he will have to face. This is a WIP, but it only has one or so chapter left to go, and most of the resolution has already happened, so I’m choosing not to mark it as a WIP here and I would recommend it to those who are gunshy about them usually! And, oh, I really enjoyed this one a lot! It’s a solid plot story, about a mystery that Eli and Thrawn find themselves wrapped up in, complete with a mysterious alien threat and lots of excellent character whump! And the fic really strides the line between friendship and maybe something more with the characters, that you could read it either way if you wanted, and that it goes hand in hand with the plot being told here. It’s one of those that’s just an incredibly solid read, it devotes the right amount of attention to the worldbuilding it’s doing and the right amount of attention to the characters’ reactions to each other, and does a really good job with both aspects! I had no trouble seeing the characters from the book or the setting of Star Wars and it was just really nice to read an adventure fic combined with whump fic! Definitely a good read if you’re interested in Thrawn fic, all the more so given how rare it can be to find fic that captures him well. ✦ Patience, Anakin by Icse, obi-wan/anakin, d/s, assassin’s creed fusion, ~1k Anakin wants attention and for once he chooses to do it the right way. SW/AC crossover, but you don’t need to know the AC universe. This is a short fic and one of those that hit me right in the iddy wants, where Anakin wants attention and is fidgety about it and restless and his head is full of whirling thoughts, so he kneels and waits for Obi-Wan’s attention, lets everything else slide out of him and a quiet steal over him, that it’s peaceful like that. And I enjoyed it for that, I would read so many fics just exactly like this one for that moment where Anakin Skywalker finds quiet. ✦ untitled by glare-gryphon, obi-wan/anakin, modern au, sugar daddy au, 1.3k Anonymous asked: No no no. And it’s really kind of hot, that there doesn’t even have to be anything explicit, it’s suggestive at most and it’s more about the initial attraction, how brilliant and shining Anakin is, how attractive he is, not just physically, but that I felt that sort of pull to him, that pull between both of them, as Ben has this incredible solidity and presence and desire to grab hold of this shining star and take care of him. It’s one of those that hits on a lot of feelings I have about Obi-Wan’s care for Anakin and then dresses it up in a hot AU that hits my id just right. ✦ No Regrets by Icsek, obi-wan/anakin/padme, 1.4k Prompt: Give me the au where Padme and Obi-Wan are planning on getting rid of Palpatine but Anakin beats them to it first and everything is okay and nothing hurts and Anakin gets to be happy. [Or you can read on tumblr!] Oh, this was just such a happy place for me when I read this, that it’s not a sugary happy everything is perfect AU, but instead a softer, kinder universe where things go right for these characters, where Anakin Skywalker is still the mess he’s always going to be, he’s terrified and reactionary and emotionally unstable, but Obi-Wan and Padme love him and he’s better at accepting that love, and everything is just really kind on my fannish heart. It was warm and good and just the right amount of sweet for me, it hit my “FIX EVERYTHING AND LET ANAKIN SKYWALKER REALIZE HE’S LOVED (even though he’s kind of a dip sometimes, but in the most adorable way)” button straight on. Satine doesn’t appreciate Ben’s many failures. Or, five times Obi-Wan Kenobi should’ve kept his trap shut. And once he should have said something, anything, anything at all. Chapter 3: This is an update rec and will focus on this chapter, rather than the fic as a whole–though, as each chapter is a stand-alone in a series, you can read this the usual amount of lack of spoilers. Oh, I really am enjoying this fic, I love how many sharp edges there are between these two, that it feels so spot on to who they are, that there’s such attraction and pull between them, how much they care about each other and yet how they clash against each other, too. It’s an extension of their relationship in the show, that I see what draws them to each other, yet also what pushes them apart from each other. And, oh, the way they crashed together, the way there’s such understated but there passion, the way Obi-Wan kisses her like a storm, the way he fucks her up against the wall, the way she is so sharp and complicated, they’re both such intense people, and it’s beautifully written. This is a follow-up to the Hello Again verse (here and here), which should probably be read first, but either way, this was a short but lovely look at Satine’s pov when Obi-Wan calls her with some important news. It’s about the fun dynamic between them, how they have these sharp edges along this such deep affection and care, how they banter and how they have these soft moments, all of which fit them very nicely here! But it’s also about something so incredibly important that Obi-Wan wants to share with her and, oh, my fannish heart. ✦ To Find I’m Not Alone + Wrestling the Angels and the Devils in my Head by MorganEilish, obi-wan/padme & luke & leia, 6k Padme survived Anakin’s betrayal, faked her death, and fled to the distant corners of the galaxy with Obi Wan to raise her children. Rec #1: I read these two fics together last night and they’re a little more Obi-Wan/Padme-centric than I usually go for, but there’s enough of Anakin’s ghost between them that I can see this, and it’s just nice to read something where they have a long, slow heal together. It’s one of those fics for when you want Obi-Wan and Padme running off together, away from the fight against the Empire, because there’s nothing left in them, only enough to raise and love the two new little lives they’re protecting. The story is told in monologue form much of the time, but it does well with cramming a bunch of really engaging, interesting details into the story, the little moments of them learning to live again instead of just survive, that the twins are growing up and the life they’re all settling into, the little things they discuss about what to do or not do next. There’s an ache throughout the whole thing in exactly the way it should be and it’s a lovely set of fics for this pairing post-ROTS and how much they’ve both lost and are slowly gaining back. Rec #2: I’ve only read the first two fics of this series, so this rec will be based on them, but I believe it’ll hold true for the greater series. This is definitely a series where you’re reading for the ship, because Obi-Wan and Padme run off together, they flee from the Empire and fighting back against it, as well as they’re entirely wrapped up in each others’ characterization, but I’m not saying that as a nitpick, instead that that’s the headspace that works best for this story, one where you go in wanting them to find something good together again. The fic is solidly written and the highlight is in how many little details are packed into the story, even as it’s told in a sort of montage/bird’s-eye-view style, moments across the years they spend in isolation together, just them and the children. The fic has a strong sense of them building something together here, the little touches of what they do on this remote planet and the little scenes between them and how they inch ever closer to each other. The fic also does well with how this isn’t a happy universe, even if they’re finding something of that together, but instead it’s very underlying sadness permeates everything kind of fic, that slowly dissipates–but it’s very slow, just as it would be. It does well with how these are both traumatized people and that that’s something they’ll never entirely, fully, wholly come back from. ✦ Pillow Fight by Liana-chan, obi-wan/anakin, ~1k ObiWan is tired. And all he wants to do is go to bed. But something is wrong. Terribly wrong… This is short and super fluffy, it’s basically Anakin stealing Obi-Wan’s pillow, who goes to get it back, and of course they end up tangled in a heap and Anakin curling up against Obi-Wan to use him as pillow instead. It’s one of those that I read while having so many other angstier fics also on my plate and made me feel that much more soothed, because it’s entirely soft and happy and adorable and fluffy, just as I wanted.

I’m working on starting a series of prompted drabbles that are (as fucking always) centered around ryoumui. I think I’ll have the first one finished by tonight so yeet there’s that!

I’m also working on a part two to this hot mess because I have a newfound and deep love for trans!Ryoma and I want more gross self-indulgent throne sex in my life.

Afterburn, but it’s kinda on pause rn because I want to continue it, but I’m constantly plagued by the fear that I’m writing Ryoma way ooc and I don’t know whether or not I can fix that in this story sooooo yeah, we’ll see if I end up getting back to that one.

They fuck during that one part of Conquest where everyone chills together in Izumo for the night and Ryoma ends up pregnant, so he has Shiro in secret and hides him away in the deep realms. Sakura is the only one who knows, and she tells Kamui that she has a son about half a year after Ryoma dies. Kamui takes Shiro back to Nohr and raises him there and it’s like Gilmore Girls but sadder. (I’m actually kind of working on this one rn.)

I have like 9 ideas for Kamui and Ryoma meeting when they were kids and being friends.

Or the story of when they were actually bffs before Kamui got kidnapped.

The way things could have been

I can’t be the only one who reads/watches things multiple times and finds myself secretly hoping things are going to be different this time. I mean, I know they won’t but you kind of hope they might? UMFBAMHA has sooooo many of these moments- where I just wish somebody had said something, or done something differently. You know?

Now I don’t for a moment want the fic to actually be different. I live for the angst, seriously. I mean, that’s the whole point of this fic. But I can’t help thinking about what might have been in some strange, alternate universe where someone says something different.

The first one of these that really stands out (and let’s face it, it is a stand out scene anyway) is ‘I hate you… now fuck me’. Every time I read it, I kind of expect Viktor to stop at this point and go ‘hang on a minute, what?’ I have a HC of how this would’ve played out and it kind of goes like this (I’m so sorry if writing this is totally against etiquette but I couldn’t help it. I suppose this is my little piece of alternate reality of the alternative canon that is UMFB):

“I hate you.” Yuuri breathed, knowing the sentiment was returned wholeheartedly, and it felt so good to finally say the words out loud after so long. “Now fuck me.”

Viktor faltered, fingers stilling in their movements but Yuuri refused to let him stop now, not now that they had both come so far. He tried to drag Viktor down into another kiss by the hair but Viktor pulled away, sitting suddenly back on the bed and looking at Yuuri in bewilderment.

“Wait, what? What the hell, Yuuri? You… you actually hate me?”

“Don’t tell me the feeling isn’t mutual” Yuuri mumbles, suddenly defensive.

“What? Why would you think that, Yuuri? What have I ever done to make you think that? I don’t do this,” Viktor gestured to the bed, to Yuuri lying naked and suddenly feeling so exposed on it, “with people I hate. Or with people who hate me. I… I don’t hate you. Of course I don’t hate you. I... never mind, obviously you don’t…” Viktor looks more confused than ever, takes a deep breath as he brushes his hair back from his eyes. “What do you take me for? I thought… what do you think we’re doing here? Why did you kiss me back if you hate me? I… God, Yuuri, I don’t… I can’t…”

Viktor has run out of words. It’s obvious that he doesn’t know what to say. His voice trails away, and Yuuri sits up and scoots backwards, hugging his knees to his chest, suddenly wishing his clothes weren’t oh so far away on the floor. Viktor is staring at him, and Yuuri looks down at his knees to avoid his gaze.

When it becomes apparent that Yuuri isn’t going to say anything, isn’t going to take back the words, Viktor sighs, resting his head between his hands. “Why do you hate me? I thought… I don’t know what I thought, actually. I didn’t think you really hated me. What did I ever do to make you hate me?”

And Yuuri can’t answer. He can’t. He’s been waiting years to say the words, and now Viktor’s actually asking him, he’s asked the question and this is the time to tell him what happened all those years ago, what Yuuri’s been waiting to say for so long, but Yuuri finds he just can’t do it. He sits and stares down, still unable to meet Viktor’s eyes, and concentrates on breathing, because this isn’t what he expected, not at all, and he doesn’t know what to say, what to do now.

Viktor speaks, softly now, resigned. “Yuuri, I… I don’t know what to say. What to think. I think… I think you should leave. I don’t hate you, I don’t know why you think that, but if you hate me then we shouldn’t be doing this, you shouldn’t be here. This is a really, really bad idea. I… I’m going to go in the bathroom and you can just get your stuff and go. Please… just go”.

There’s silence when Viktor’s gone. Yuuri sits for a minute, stunned. What just happened? Then he dresses hurriedly, as best he can given the state of his shirt. He’ll just have to wrap it around himself and hold it closed and hope he doesn’t meet anyone in the corridors of the hotel. He tiptoes out of the room, not knowing why he feels the need to be silent. The door swings shut and closes with a soft thud, and Yuuri has forgotten completely about his tie, still hanging crookedly on the bedside lampshade.

I can hear the dialogue in my head but I totally can’t write it well, sorry! I don’t think I’ve written dialogue since I was at school and that was a really really long time ago now. @kazliin I am so sorry for butchering your gorgeous scene with my drivel but I can’t stop writing stuff about your fic, it’s just SO GOOD!

On a side note, while thinking about this scene, I really want to know what Viktor thinks about having his lip bitten so hard it bleeds. I want to know whether he’s caught up in the moment and the passion and it’s actually a ‘needy sound’ he makes, as it says in the fic, or if that’s Yuuri misinterpreting what’s actually a yelp of pain. (I’ve raised toddlers. You have to be bitten seriously hard to draw blood). Just another thing to add to my list of ‘things I desperately want to know from the companion fic’!

5/7/17, 3:33am - update pt3, just random odds and ends

it was so great to see my fam the other weekend.

Me taven and trusten all have the same hair and we’re like all about the same thickness now it’s weird lol. All jamming out to the new Kendrick, I felt Really in sync with the first time like ever. It was nice. Like even though we’re not the closest we still relate really well? maybe? I guess I don’t get to have too many real conversations.

Shit wait well our hair is a Little different, did I ever wrote that I followed through with getting it dyed? It’s like ‘barely blonde’ kinda gold, it’s super fucking sweet. might go a little lighter sometime this month, but yeah when I visited dar it lightened up so I Must’ve mentioned it. Trusten told me he loved it though so I feel super fucking accomplished. And Roxy did too, actually, and said that I was wearing my hair fine, so that’s fucking spectacular. I’ve literally gotten nothing but compliments lately hahah.

I was heckling trusten about him having a harem of girls smooching on him and he says “yeah sucks that they don’t know that I’m gay” and I responded “I mean I’m biflexible, it’s 2017 yknow” and he says “I mean it’s 2017. Of course.” Trusten’s too good at joking like how I do, I can’t get a real good read on what his actual thoughts are a lot of the time. And Taven, though he’s come miles, still doesn’t conversate the best. I have to drive the conversation and he’s all on board, but seems like he doesn’t know where to take it himself kinda. Though, to be fair, I was avoiding a lot of the little drama kid peeps because I don’t know what the fuck to say to them either. Maybe they feel the same? The only moments I kinda bonded with the new drama kids were where we memed a ‘longest yea boi’ and they were happy I joined in, and when I was congratulating people after the play and talking about random shit. Hunter said I made the one girl’s day just saying that she did great. I guess I just say to people what I’d want people to say to me? One of the seniors was bawling his eyes out for a long time after the play was over, I like hugged him for a bit and told him “don’t worry, you never really leave.” I’m not sure if that was even true. I feel like a totally different person from who I was in high school. I’ve practically gone around the moon and come back. But I think maybe that’s what I’d have wanted to hear? Idk maybe I just gave him shitty advice and people should just move on lol. Who knowsssssssssss I’m sure it didn’t hurt him hahaha.

Been jamming out to a bunch of new music. New sylvan esso finally dropped and it’s hot as expected. New Gorrillaz I’m not super into but the song trusten put on in the car for me I bump a lot lately.

Found out my “a wise poet once said, other days other ways” might have been a rip off from School of Rock because there’s a line in the play that’s similar. I was hoping trusten was paying a personal homage to me, but ofc that wasn’t it lmao. He fucking kicked that play’s ass though. Everyone struggled on the guitar solos at the climax hahaha, but I wouldn’t have done any better for sure I fucking sucked at guitar when I was his age. His acting was so good, Hunter called him a better jack black than jack black. I think it’s the only play I’ve watched twice in a weekend hahah.

Holy shit Brianna randomly messaged me, we’re gonna go on a date tomorrow. Everything in my life is going so fucking great, man. It’s like almost ominous lol when I first got to gboro I was like “is this even bad? My life seems like it’s going so well right now wtf.” I mean I have to get recertified and this whole work move is an upheaval for sure, but I guess from playing magic back as a kid I should know that an Upheaval isn’t always a bad thing for me.

sweeeet wish me luck on this date tomorrow I have to successfully wake up before 11 lol and also not blow things with her and also get the basket of clothes out of my back seat so she doesn’t make fun of me again lmfao.

I guess I should get to work.

OH wait I forgot. So the beginning of this not-posting period I finally wrapped up BOTW. Got almost all the gear maxxed out, got all the shrines, smoked nearly a gram to myself and just played out the final boss and the cut scenes in the end game canon armor I felt sooooo fucking good about it. Everything was like perfect. Let Helena borrow the game after so it needed to be hahah.

Also I wanted to write about my first day in gboro because I thought it was lulzy.

Friday I was supposed to go to a work function/party at Frankie’s fun park at 4pm, so after the regular thursday post tournament safety shenanigans I got to bed at like 4, fell asleep by like 6, felt normal. Maybe it was 8 and I’m lying to myself to cover my ass but who knows. Ended up sleeping all the fucking way through friday until 9pm, woke up to a dead phone in a fucking panic that I was late for the first time in an eternity. Did my classic routine of running screaming through the house terrified that my life was over. Fonzi calmed me the fuck down and told me to just text my boss. I immediately went to default “sorry, i’m sick” text mode and he was just like get the fuck in here so I don’t have to stay. Wasn’t even really mad. Turned out just fine lol. So I texted Ash that I was actually coming into town, reminded her to be up at 6:30 to let me in and she said she would. I texted her on the way home and she didn’t respond so I already figured she was gonna have a hard time getting up at best. So I get there, she doesn’t respond, I just start chilling on the porch, smoke some cigarettes, call every 15 mins or so. I got out of work late so I got there at 7 and she’s still not up at 10 so I run off to do get a prescription filled and am just mellow as fuck about it. She finally woke up when I came back about 11:30 and bless her fucking heart she had my bed set up and eye covers and sour patch kids and a bowl packed all set out just for me with a little handwritten cutesy note. She gave me a key and told me she loved me and that she was hungover and going back to sleep and we went to bed and I couldn’t imagine a better fucking start to this chapter in my life.

Every day since has at the worst been alright (there was the day after doing coke where I was suuuuper hungover), but I’ve been getting drunk and chilling with people and meeting new people and having fun and I fucking love all of it. My life is awesome. Super glad I got to switch my days this week so I’d have thursday off so I could bro one last time with the Raleigh gang, too. It’s been real.

Alright I’m out of time, it’s 4:04, I’ve gotta actually do my work now. No promises when I update next, who knows. When my life is going well I don’t feel the urge to ponder things as hard so I don’t sit on the porch wanting to type shit out forever so idk forreal. But I anticipate some more wacky girl hijynx to happen and for me to get back into playing magic the gathering with Ash and Aaron, and everyone’s starting to take bets on when we have a threesome. So far the closest was when Ash was sick dying in bed and I rubbed her back and he made tea for us [read: not a sexy moment at all. But was really cute when Ash started telling me feelings about Aaron] so I doubt that 100% lmao.

Anyway, I don’t really know what’s gonna happen for once, so I guess we’ll just see lol
