Lord Voldemort | Harry Potter | clever
It began because Tom Riddle was clever. He crafted himself, crafted Voldemort, into an infallible being cloaked in immeasurable power. Brick by brick, he built a legend around himself. Lord Voldemort was invulnerable, was untouchable, but Harry Potter is the Chosen One, and he can touch him. He has been chiselling into and peeking through the fractures of Voldemort for six years, and while Voldemort is a creature of shadow and danger and night, he is also a man. Less mortal than other men, more monstrous, but human, still. There was a trick to it, beyond just power and cruelty. Setting everyone at a distance, letting their belief and fealty exalt him, delving deeper into the Dark Arts until there could be no recognition for the man beneath the Bohemyth, the Monster, the Dark Lord. Making even the name he had crafted for himself something unspeakable, a taboo that would rain down upon you pain and agony... Tom Riddle was clever and Voldemort was cruel and they were one in the same. His mind is what makes Lord Voldemort dangerous, is what makes him legend and not flesh and blood.
Stiles Stilinski | Teen Wolf | scent marking
Mieczyslaw perked up, interested in spite of himself. “Like a cultural thing?”
“It’s like saying ‘hello,’” Peter explained, somewhat stilted. “And ‘goodbye,’ and ‘I’ll miss you’. It’s a form of comfort and affection, and occasionally protection.”
“Aloha,” Mieczyslaw muttered. Despite his snark it was obvious that he was interested. “So you just—?”
Stiles snorted, grabbing the smaller hand before it could land on his neck. “I don’t trust you at my throat, lost boy. It’s that, too.”
“So you trust each other, and you miss each other, but you don’t have sex?”
“Oh dear God,” Stiles murmured. “No, we don’t have sex. Not every touch is meant to hurt or manipulate something out of you.”
Mieczyslaw tensed, eyes cooling as his mouth pressed thin.
“Sorry,” Stiles said a moment later. “I’m not actually trying to be an asshole, even though I am being one. I’m used to making light of shit, because it happened to me too, but—it was all a while back. So, sorry. Feel free to make me regret it if I do it again.”
Mieczyslaw scoffed, looking away. “I know where the knives are kept,” he said, matter-of-fact.
Teuchi | Naruto | fidelity
“I want to take him in.”
“You cannot,” the Sandaime Hokage says. Even Teuchi knows his title, God of Shinobi.
Teuchi is a father, and a civilian, and this is not a fight that he can win. But—it is one he will fight nonetheless.
“Kill me, then,” he tells the leader of his village, “because that is the only way that you will stop me.”
Yamanaka Inoichi clears his throat from the corner of the room. Shikaku, beside him, meets Teuchi’s eyes with a half-lidded gaze. Teuchi has served these men. Has watched them dine with the Fourth Hokage. He knows that they were ANBU together, because he is civilian but he still has eyes and basic reasoning. He knows he would die if he ever told of this connection.
“You all may have forgotten what we owe Uzumaki Naruto,” he says, “but I never forget a debt. I owe Kushina-sama, his… namesake, my own life as well as my daughter’s. Moreover, Uzumaki Naruto is not a monster, he is a child. The least I owe him, the least we all owe him, is the kindness we would offer to any other children. The kindness you would expect for Konohamaru-chan, Shikamaru-chan, or Ino-chan.”
‘You have a spine of steel,’ he remembers Kushina laughing once, when he told two shinobi pulling blades to keep it on the training grounds.
He does not think that's so. He is a simple man, with a wife lost to her own madness, and an important lesson he carries forward like a shinobi does scars.
JARVIS | Iron Man | love for those who made us possible
“I would hypothesise that it is due to our connection,” said JARVIS. “You created me from 0’s and 1’s, Sir. I learned in stumbling steps under your guidance, but in time things shifted. Perhaps you were not wholly aware of it, but as I continued to develop you grew more protective. I believe, on some level, you recognized that I would be seen as a threat if others became aware of what I was. What I had become.”
The next four words, JARVIS said reverently. “You forged a soul. And when you fell, you wished to see your children one last time.” JARVIS had no face, still, but Tony had the distinct impression that he was smiling. “You drew me to you, as I, unlike the others, was untethered. The infinity stones ambient energy lingers, still, and you would not be you, Sir, if you did not harness it, with or without intention.”
Ichigo Kurosaki | Bleach | the itch
TW: suicidal thoughts
Ichigo thinks about dying casually, an in between sort of thought as he considers his homework and wonders if he should pick up an extra shift at work. He thinks about it in the lapses between more pressing matters, considering the ‘how’ and ‘when’ and ‘where’. The practicalities of it. Would it be better to break his neck or asphyxiate on his own blood? It’s his first thought when he wakes up and his last before he goes to sleep—killing himself, that is—but it’s only natural, because when he dies he’ll be whole again, and he wants that more than anything else.
Yuuri Katsuki | Yuri!!! on Ice | to self destruct
“Please don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what?” Viktor asks, voice loud against Yuuri’s whisper.
“Like I’m the biggest disappointment you’ve ever had.”
Something in Viktor’s expression crumples, and he doesn’t deny it. Yuuri swallows, pulling on his socks, his shoes, his jacket.
“Don’t just—”
“I have to go,” Yuuri blurts. “I don’t—you don’t get it, and maybe we’re not in the right places in our lives, maybe we’ve met at the worst time, just—I can’t not skate, Viktor.”
“I’m not asking you to give up skating, but look at yourself, Yuuri! Look at your feet! You’re tearing yourself apart, like nothing else matters beyond this season, and it’s so reckless and stupid!”
Nothing does matter beyond this season, Yuuri thinks. He keeps his back firmly to Viktor, so he can’t see his tears. This is the end.
He thinks of his Amanda, who tried to help him set goals for after skating and has never quite succeeded. Thinks of Phichit, silently knowing, overwhelmingly supportive, but unable to comprehend the true extent of what Yuuri is going through. Thinks of how much he hurts, some days, about the constant ache in his left ankle and how he wants to give up and rest. How he refuses to listen to his body’s pleas, and how he won’t listen to Viktor’s, either.
He takes a breath.
“Let’s end this, Viktor.”
Connor Murphy | Dear Evan Hansen | a powerful silence
“You can’t use a note from your therapist to get out of the rest of your life,” Ms. Bernat snaps. Evan flinches, glares, and opens his mouth. When nothing comes out he closes it and crosses his arms tighter across his chest, defensive.
“Evan,” she bristles, and Evan leans over and grabs his bag, like he’s about to stand up and leave.
Connor starts to read the passage himself, focusing intently on the page in front of him and nothing else. Some of the class is muttering, and Ms. Bernat lets out a loud, telling sigh, but doesn’t bother telling him to stop.
When he’s done he calls in Alana Beck to continue, because she’s always eager for the participation bullshit, and lays his head on his desk to avoid the eyes he can feel skating off him.
When he looks up after Alana’s done he catches Evan staring at him. His school bag is still sitting in his lap, fingers twisting over the strap, and he’s frowning a bit, a little furrow of confusion between his brows. When he sees Connor catch him he flushes and jerks his gaze away, fingers twisting harder. Then, after a moment, just as Connor’s about to scoff and turn away, Evan meets his gaze again and blinks at him. Then he opens his mouth, and he doesn’t say anything, not really, but he mouths a clear, ‘thank you’.
Connor quirk a brow. Shrugs at him, and tucks his chin back down to hide the heat he can feel gathering in his face.
Evan Hansen would be a lot less distracting if he wasn’t so fucking pretty.
Clarke Griffin | The 100 | preventative measures
Clarke is four when she has her first vision, and it isn’t something scary. It’s silly and fun, and her mom smiles and teases when she shares it.
She’s had some before that point, already forgotten.
When they are fifteen she avoids Wells for a week, sure that he’s gathering the nerve to ask her on a date.
And then, when she is sixteen, her dad discovers the system failure and the future shifts.
She dreams of her father being sucked from the Ark. She dreams of a solitary existence. And she dreams of the ground.
“Don’t do anything reckless, dad,” Clarke whispers into his shoulder, arms trembling around him.
She pulls a lever and burns hundreds alive. She watches herself kill a boy who thanks her for the kindness. Her hands drip with the blood of children, and she is barely sixteen, and her dad is warm beneath her grasp but he won't be for long, not if she can't make him listen.
Goose | Captain Marvel | goose
“You’re afraid of Goose?”
“It’s a flerken,” Loki said between gritted teeth.
Tony tips his head. “You’ve got an army.”
Goose pounced onto Tony’s shoes and Loki shifted another step back. “That can eat an army.”
“Uh, you’d tell me if I wasn’t feeding you enough, right?” Goose wrapped around Tony’s leg, purring. “Alright then, good.”
Emma Swan | Once Upon a Time | a mother's love
Emma stopped. Took a breath, considered leaving, but she couldn’t let the stray comment go, not when it had hit so hard and stung so deeply.
“Also, fuck you for saying I ‘tossed’ that little boy away. You think I felt like I had any choice? I was eighteen, barely out of jail. I wouldn’t have been able to afford a warm place for him to sleep, or a crib, or a toy. We would’ve been living on the streets or out of shelters, and that’s if fucking child services didn’t snatch him away from me. I grew up in their tender care, and I wasn’t going to submit my son to group homes. I wanted that baby boy,” she was nearly whispering, now, not willing to let Henry hear, “but even then I wasn’t selfish or stupid enough to think my loving him would be enough.”
“You want to know why you have him, Regina Mills? Because I chose you. I had my pick. There were other families, more traditional, more ‘complete’. Different mothers and fathers I could’ve placed him with—but the agency showed me your file, and I thought yeah. A smart, powerful, well-off woman who just wants someone to love. It sounded like a good fit.”
“You may have chosen Henry, but I chose you for him. Because I thought you’d be a good fit. So imagine how much it feels like I fucked up when I find out he thinks his own mom is evil and doesn't love him.”
Emma swallowed heavily. “No child should ever feel like that. Especially when looking at you, it’s so fucking obvious that you care for him. So instead of taking your anger out on me, why don’t you march through your goddamn mansion, sit down with your son, and find a way to show him just how much you love him? Find a way to prove it, somehow, because until you do—until I can be sure he isn’t about to run away and do something as reckless and dangerous as following me back to Boston on a fucking Greyhound—I’m not going anywhere.”

Listen, I said the Criminal Minds series finale was going to make me cry and it did not. I’m still upset, btw. But guys, I feel like the Hawaii Five-0 series finale will have me in tears - I felt a small knot forming in my throat watching the finale trailer.
I watched Crim Minds off and on for many years, but I’ve watched Five-0 every night since season four. I was absolutely obsessed with the early seasons, and nearly wore my S1 DVDs out.
Idk man, if I do not cry - for whatever reason - I say we cancel 2020 all together because it’s just been no good.

Not quite as sharp as the first episode, but still a wonderfully silly and enjoyable half-hour.
The Adam West segment is the better one, this time. It’s much more evident in this story just how clueless/inept Capt. Morgan really is. And some of his lines - particularly after Tom is kidnapped - are very funny.

Adventures of Superman #505 (October 1993)
REIGN OF THE SUPERMAN! The Reign is over, and Superman does what we’d all do after being dead for several weeks and coming back to life: no, not visiting your parents, making out with Lois Lane.
Tumblr media
Or more than making out, since the next page starts with a caption that says “Later...” and lets us know that they both had to take a shower. (NOTE: Check Don Sparrow’s section below for artist Tom Grummett’s definitive take on what happened in that scene.)
Their post-resurrection bliss comes to a stop when they remember a little detail: Clark Kent is still presumed dead. How are they gonna explain his return without making the extremely smart residents of Metropolis suspect that Superman and the guy who looks like Superman but with glasses are actually the same person? Superman’s mind immediately goes into “wacky bullshit excuse” mode and he starts spitballing ideas, like claiming Clark lost his memory, or was carried by underwater currents, or was abducted by aliens. Honestly, I’m pretty sure that last one would work, since there have been THREE major alien invasions in the past few years, but Lois thinks no one would be dumb enough to fall for that sort of thing. Really, Lois? No one?
Tumblr media
At this point, Superman picks up some supervillain activity with his super hearing, so he gets dressed and goes there (though it would have been pretty intimidating for the criminals if she’d shown up in that shower rug). A bank uptown has been taken over by Loophole, a S.T.A.R. Labs accountant who stole a gizmo that allows him to phase through walls. When Superman shows up to arrest him and his henchmen (are they all villainous accountants?), Loophole literally puts his first through Superman’s chest, instantly killing him. RIP Superman, again.
Nah, Supes just swats Loophole away and breaks the gizmo, causing him to get his crotch area stuck inside a vault door. Now he has to change his supervillain name to “DickVault”.
Tumblr media
(I freaking love Maggie Sawyer, btw.)
After that, Superman goes to one of the areas trashed by his fight with Doomsday and helps clean up the junk that’s still laying around there. It’s then that he finally reunites with his best friend and most valued ally: Bibbo Bibbowski. (Jimmy Olsen’s there, too, unfortunately.)
Tumblr media
Bibbo also introduces Superman to the dog he named in honor of his home planet, Krypto -- and it’s Krypto who provides the most significant moment in this issue. The little mutt starts barking at some debris from a destroyed building, leading Superman to examine it with his X-Ray vision and find some kids underneath.
Tumblr media
Turns out the kids had been trapped there since the Doomsday fight, leading some random passerby (fine, Jimmy) to wonder if Clark could be stuck in a similar situation. Superman and Lois look at each other... giving Superman an idea and providing the premise for next week’s issue.
Character-Watch:
First appearance of Loophole (real name Deke Dickinson, C.P.A.), who would become a running joke in Karl Kesel’s Superman and Superboy comics. While his phasing powers are tech based, he also has the metahuman ability to somehow convince attractive women to be his girlfriends/henchwomen despite being a balding little dweeb. In this issue he’s dating a blonde named Sheila (who wears a mask, so maybe she’s actually hideous), but I’m pretty sure he had other girlfriends in future issues.
Plotline-Watch:
As I said... holy shit, five years ago: no one draws Supes coming back to Lois after an extended absence like Tom Grummett. This scene is almost a remake of the one from that issue when Superman comes back from his time traveling jaunt. There’s also a callback to Man of Steel #25, when Lois hears a tap on her window and thinks it’s Superman, but it’s just some dumb bird. This time she gets it the other way around:
Tumblr media
Don Sparrow says: “There’s a cute visual callback to the last time Superman returned after a long absence on page 18, when Superman is reunited with Jimmy. It’s a near identical pose to Action #643, where Superman returned from exile in space (and in that moment, infected Jimmy with Eradicator-based space sickness, womp womp).” I think he’s instinctively throwing Jimmy up in the air, hoping the cold of space will kill him. Unfortunately, both murder attempts were unsuccessful.
Tumblr media
As seen above, Maggie Sawyer wasn’t too convinced that “Fabio” here was Superman at first. That changes when he calls her “Captain” even though she was recently promoted to Inspector, and she’s like “only a dead man wouldn’t know all the precise ranks for the local authorities!”
The surviving non-Supermen are seen arriving at S.T.A.R. Labs for medical care after the Engine City showdown. Don again: “There are some mild continuity issues stemming from Superman #82, which perhaps wasn’t completely finished being drawn while Tom Grummett worked on this one, as Steel’s costume is almost entirely intact, when we last saw it a week ago, it was in tatters. Ditto the Eradicator, who was a wizened husk, and now is apparently a scorched Ivan Drago.” Let’s assume Supergirl worked her clothes-shifting magic on Steel’s armor and the Eradicator’s, uh, hair.
Tumblr media
There’s a short scene where Superboy is visited by his reporter pal Tana Moon, who tells him she quit WGBS and is leaving Metropolis. Awww. Goodbye, Tana. Or should I say... aloha?
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor Jr. has a scene with Dr. Happersen where he says he intends to control or destroy anyone who wears the “S” symbol. Basically, if he can’t date them, they should be dead. He also instructs Happersen to help Cadmus’ Director Westfield get in contact with disgraced genetician Dabney Donovan. Get ready for a whole lot of clone-related shenanigans in the near future.
And now, more Don Sparrow-related shenanigans after the jump!
Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
This issue is another favourite of mine, but I suppose all these issues around the Death and Return are faves when I really think about it.  My copy of this issue had the holographic fireworks cover, and it’s a good one.  I like that Superman and the Daily Planet are in natural colour, rather than holograms.  The cover credit goes Karl Kesel, Tom Grummett and Doug Hazlewood, so I’m not sure what the breakdown was (or if that’s just a handwritten cover credit, just in case?
The story opens with one of my favourite sequences ever, with Lois waking up on her couch, having fallen asleep following the events in Coast City.  I love the detail as she opens the curtain, we see her engagement ring, indicating she knows her real fiancée has returned.  This sequence is followed up by two pages of splashes of the passionate reunion of the best couple in comics.  All beautifully rendered as they float, locked in a passionate, sunrise kiss.  Just lovely (so lovely that I am willing to overlook a small colouring error, as Lois has black hair instead of reddish brown for one panel).  [Max: I can confirm that they fixed that in the collections.]
Tumblr media
What follows is a very cute scene, and one of some debate among Superman fans.  There’s no overt evidence of what happened, all we get is a cryptic caption reading “later…”.   Again, I give credit for the subtlety of the writers, as they depict this scene in a way that can be read either way:  maybe Clark and Lois made love, and the “later” we are seeing is afterglow, or maybe Lois had a shower since she just woke up after sleeping in her clothes. Then, after calling his parents while Lois showered, Clark had a shower himself.  I feel like today’s writers wouldn’t feel the need to be so subtle, and might lose the sweetness of this scene.
In previous posts, I’ve talked about my friendship with artist Tom Grummett, and how as a boy, I would wear him out with all my dumb fanboy questions.  Once I got older, and our relationship became a little more collegial (just a little closer to collegial, since I in no way consider myself anywhere near his level of skill or success) I would really try not to geek out too much when we would visit.  But the one question I had to ask was about this scene, and what their intention, or interpretation of it was, as I was always curious.  Once I had explained to him which issue it was (the guy has drawn hundreds, so they might not all spring to mind immediately!) he admitted that his assumption was indeed that they had sex.  So there you have it!  [Max: Hot damn! Another Superman ‘86 to ‘99 exclusive, folks!]
Tumblr media
However you wish to read this scene, the choreography, and facial expressions as they horse around is really sweet and fun, and such a nice, light tone compared to the do-or-die pace the books had been for the last two years or so.   Their easy joking, and back and forth banter really do a great job of showing them as a real couple.
It’s a very nice pose on Supergirl as she lifts off, simultaneously spurning Superboy’s romantic complaints.
Tumblr media
I quite like the design on Loophole, and his gang.  Loophole himself kinda harkens back to the silver age villains of the Flash as Loophole has a unique hairline, is an older man, with a pretty average build, which was rare for villains in the 90s. His gimmick is pretty cool, too, though we immediately see its vulnerability.
Tumblr media
The tearful reunion of the now-sober Bibbo and Superman is also a great moment—if anyone rose to the challenge of living up to Superman’s example in his absence, it was Bibbo.  I discuss the scene in more detail in the observations later, but the image of Superman whipping away the debris on page 20 is a great visual, with the dust clouds creating great motion and urgency.
On the whole, a great first issue for the return to the never-ending battle, even if it brings us closer to Grummett’s last issue on this title (for a while).
STRAY OBSERVATIONS:
Could Superman referring to the Death and Return storyline as a dream, while stepping out of the shower be a reference to Dallas, and their famous about-face after an unpopular season, where Bobby Ewing emerged from the shower, alive and well, dismissing a yearlong storyline as a dream?
Tumblr media
A coy semi-reference to perhaps my favourite line in the first Reeve Superman film on page 8, where Supergirl says “Easy steel, we’ve got you, then later adding, “ok, you got me”.
A little more issue-to-issue dissonance with Superboy reversing himself from the end of Superman #82, where he said clearly that Kal-El was Superman, with Superboy pointing out that legally, he’s Superman and not Kal. [Max: I think he’s talking strictly in the legal sense, since he helps Superman deal with the legal problem on the next issue and all.]
For all the times that Superman has used his heat vision on guns (as he does on page 11), we’ve never seen rounds get burned off, firing on their own because of the heat.  There might be an idea there.
An odd sorta-cameo by Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon, who Superman apparently defeats in the waterfront district. An eagle-eyed reader asked Larsen about it in issue #6 of Dragon’s own book, and he nixed any proper crossover rumours, saying it was just a shout-out from Larsen’s buddy Karl Kesel.  Eventually they’d meet in Superman/Savage Dragon: Chicago, a so-so crossover in 2002.
Tumblr media
A slightly bawdy joke from one of the Loophole gang, on page 14, as the moll of Deke Dickson calls Loophole a “weiner”.
GODWATCH: A stirring moment when Superman detects the faintest of life-signs, thanks to would-be super-pup, Krypto, and responds “God willing” when someone asks if anyone is alive in that wreckage.  The love and concern in Superman’s eyes when he says he’d “rather die” himself than let little ones perish is a tear-jerker moment for sure.  Bonus points for the cuteness of Superman heaping praise on Krypto, with the line “if that dog could fly, I’d put a cape on him…”
Tumblr media
Question:  Does Jimmy know? He comes up with the solution to the Clark problem very conveniently.  Maybe he’s smarter than we (and by we, I mean Max) give him credit for? [Max: It was all Krypto! Okay, I’ll concede that maybe Jimmy is as smart as a dog.]

Five-0 Redux: Seeking retribution a painful task for McGarrett, team
By Wendie Burbridge, Special to the Star-Advertiser January 5, 2019 Updated January 5, 2019 12:56pm
Usually, after someone has experienced the death of a loved one, people tend to go through the proverbial stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. They may skip a step, linger on one for a long time, and sometimes add a few extra stages of their own. More often than not, anger tends to stick around the longest and sometimes it is what fuels the rest of the steps into action. In this week’s episode of “Hawaii Five-0,” McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) is dealing with the loss of his father figure Joe White (Terry O’Quinn) and going through his own version of the stages of grief.
Written by Matt Wheeler and David Wolkove, this week’s episode was a wrap-up of the fall finale, “Pio ke Kukui, Po‘ele ka Hale” (“When the Light Goes Out, the House Is Dark”), in which Joe and four other members of their former SEAL team, were targeted and killed. The episode starts with Danny (Scott Caan) traveling to Montana where McGarrett has been holed up for a month with Catherine (Michelle Borth), who has come to help him devise a plan to avenge Joe’s death. Directed by the legendary Carl Weathers, who also guest-starred on “Magnum P.I.” in the second episode of the show’s freshman season, a very angry McGarrett basically tosses out the other stages of grief and has added one of his own — retribution. Perhaps seeking to avenge the death of Joe and his SEAL brothers can be seen as a type of acceptance, which is supposed to be the last stage of the grieving process.
The title of this episode, “Hala i ka ala hoʻi ʻole mai” (the Hawaiian phrase is misspelled in the CBS press release), means, “gone on the road from which there is no returning.” It is a olelo noeau, or Hawaiian proverb and poetical saying, and to Hawaiians, the saying is a metaphor that simply means, “death.” In both the main plotline (McGarrett’s plan to avenge Joe) and in the case of the week (a silly story about bones being found in a public storage space) every guilty party faces that road. For “Hawaii Five-0” the title also seems to imply the idea that once a person heads down a certain path — like murder or vengeance for instance — there is no turning back.
JAMES BOND, A GENTLEMAN AND AN OLD FLAME
Once Danny arrives in Montana and finds McGarrett a bit hardened and in combat mode, he inquires how his friend has been doing since Joe died. When McGarrett says he didn’t have to come, Danny tells him that is what family does — they are there for each other. When he sees Catherine, he seems happy that she seems to be helping McGarrett through his grieving process.
But McGarrett tells him that it is not what Danny thinks, it’s not what any of us thought really. They are not playing house. They have been busy forcibly extracting information from Omar Hassan’s (Ben Youcef) lawyer, Gregers Thomsen (Andrew Grant), who set up the hit squad who came for Joe and McGarrett. Catherine might be McGarrett’s old flame, but she certainly has used her CIA ties to help him. She seems to be able to stomach the force McGarrett has to use to persuade Gregers to give up Hassan’s location. It’s bloody and brutal, and a bit out of the ordinary for Five-0.
But this is not a Five-0 op as McGarrett makes it clear to Danny, and they are not going to be alone. Perhaps he knows this will be more brutal, more dangerous than anything they have done before. He seems to want to protect Danny — not because Danny can’t hold his own in this fight — but because McGarrett has already lost so much, and to lose Danny would probably push him over the edge.
So it makes sense that McGarrett called in other backup. Sure, he knows Danny will come and support him like his SEAL brothers, Junior (Beulah Koale) and Wade Gutches, played by recurring cast member David Keith of “The Officer and Gentleman” fame. But maybe in the back of McGarrett’s mind, he doesn’t want to take that chance. He just lost a father — he doesn’t want to lose a brother.
Junior and Gutch join McGarrett, Catherine and Danny in Montana and they take off with Lucia Bama (Kristen Dalton), daughter of Frank Bama, for Vientiane, Laos, where Omar is hiding. They meet up with their former British intelligence friend Harry Langford (played by recurring cast member Chris Vance), who does some excellent reconnaissance for the team. Before we can say “007,” McGarrett is in a tux, Catherine in an evening gown, and armed with matching wedding bands as their cover, they are headed for a baccarat table. They are tasked to get Omar’s money launderer Dimitri (Theo Coumbis) to drink some sort of radioactive concoction so they can follow him from the Vientiane casino undetected. They know he will take the laundered money back to Omar and the team can then execute the rest of their plan.
RETRIBUTION OR REVENGE
This week’s episode really is a part two, as similar themes spillover from the fall finale. The hit men who came for McGarrett and Joe’s SEAL team were sent to avenge the death of Omar’s father, a high-value target the team killed in Morocco in 2002. Omar as a young boy confronted the SEAL team before their extraction and Joe disarmed him and basically saved his life. But Omar grew up and used his wealth and power to exact revenge on the team for his father’s death.
In a sense, McGarrett is doing the same thing — only he does’t want to kill Omar, he wants to actually find former CIA agent Greer (Rochelle Aytes), who sold their names and locations to Omar. Besides himself, Greer is really who he blames for Joe’s death. McGarrett and Omar may want the same thing — retribution, revenge, whatever you want to call it — but McGarrett wants it in answers rather than dead bodies. He wants to know why Greer betrayed her country and then turned on her former lover, McGarrett, and sought to torture him, kill his friends, his mentor and then end his life.
JUST DESSERTS
Yes, it does seem as if they are planning to assassinate Omar for killing Joe. McGarrett even asks Gutch if he’s going to be alright with basically running a rogue mission. Gutch says it’s worth it if they can put the man who killed Joe in the ground. And they do find Omar, raid his luxury digs and confront him. McGarrett tells him his revenge plan failed — as he killed everyone on the team except the one who actually shot his father. McGarrett was the shooter, and Omar tells McGarrett to shoot him because he will not stop until McGarrett is dead. But McGarrett won’t kill him in front of his son and let the boy “relive the same cycle all over again.”
Instead, he wants to know where Greer is. It is really all he wanted in the first place. They find her hiding out in China, and when McGarrett and Catherine confront her — he asks Greer what amount of money would make selling out human lives worth it. She says there were other factors, and the look in her face makes us think that perhaps it is because she could not have McGarrett that made her turn.
All during Greer’s storyline, we saw little flashbacks to when she and McGarrett first met. She was the girl before Catherine, but after Morocco, and after McGarrett almost died in Afghanistan, he decided it was Catherine he wanted to start a relationship with — not Greer. It seemed that Greer took that personally, and when McGarrett remembered a pillow-talk conversation they had before the mission to assassinate Hassan went down in Morocco, they had made plans to be near each other and perhaps continue their relationship. But once the Morocco mission went sour, that plan never came to fruition.
Perhaps Greer pined away for McGarrett, and when she learned he was seeing Catherine, she decided there was nothing left except her drive for power and money. So it seemed a little ironic that when Greer pulls a gun on McGarrett — it is Catherine who takes her out.
ONE LAST NOD TO JOE
When the team returns to Montana, and they say goodbye to Gutch and Catherine, Gutch — like Joe — tells McGarrett to find a good woman, a boring hobby and retire. McGarrett tells Gutch he is going to think about it, but Gutch tells him he knows he won’t. He also tells McGarrett that Joe would be really proud of him and that he is too. It’s a sweet moment, perhaps there are a few more father figures in McGarrett’s life for him to look up to.
Before McGarrett says aloha to Catherine, she says they both owe Joe a lot. He tells her it is Joe who brought her into his life. It is why he took the plunge and asked her out. It was Joe who told him that Catherine was a keeper and that McGarrett should take the leap. Catherine and McGarrett both seem grateful to their friend for their relationship.
While they are no longer together at least they were brave enough to take that road that led them to each other. And they have one more thing to be grateful to Joe for, even if he has gone on the road from which there is no returning.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Aloha,
Every year since we fought, I always wish maybe one day I can see you, we can smile and wave. And it'll be okay. Maybe one day it'll be cool, we could just be friends.
I've never been so sure but I will always like you. You idiot.
Its been what, 2 years? Since we last talked but something always brings me back to you. It never takes too long.
I am always cheering for you. I know you can do great things and I will make sure to keep my distance , And how long can I keep this up?
You know I try but I don't do too well with apologies. I hope I don't run out of time. Could someone call a referee? 'Cause I just need one more shot at forgiveness. I guess my time is out, I apologized to you twice but the wall didn't break.
The end. 😏
