the first few episodes of Code Lyoko do a really good job of setting up the story en media res, and I especially like how it only takes the second episode for them to blow their secret and try to save people

there’s a lot of other shows where you spend so long going ‘why aren’t you trying to tell people what’s going on, lives are at stake’

and Code Lyoko just does that immediately

#code lyoko #i think miraculous ladybug went the opposite direction where it constantly makes you go 'why don't you just tell your secrets' #but it goes so long and gets pushed so far that it becomes clear it's not a matter of practicality or safety #marinette is just SUCH stickler for the rule because of a sense of duty to tikki and fu #that she would rather be hurt and let her friends be hurt #than give up any secrets about magic or identities #it just takes a long time to get that impression because it needs to be tested a lot to drive in how seriously marinette takes the rule #if she had given in about identities at all in the last 70 episodes it'd be frustrating that she didn't just tell chat #but because she keeps the secret so tightly it stops being a plot contrivance and starts being a character flaw #code lyoko it was easier for them to do both in character and story wise because of the tiem resets #but that's why it works to do it so early cuz otherwise it doesn't make sense to not tell people if they have an amnesia button #but it illustrates that no one believes them and it can just slow things down to tell them the truth cuz it takes so long to convince them #and their hesitation isn't explained right away because if they have a reset button why not tell people #but the reason is implied and isn't as important as the question of why they wouldn't blow their cover to help people so i prefer that's the #question they answer
