Happilyfeatherafter's ficrec Fridays
In an effort to actually post on my own blog and not just tag rant I'm going to try and start doing what makes me happy - shouting about the fic I've read and loved recently! ETA: thank you @bloodydeanwinchester for the inspiration and impetus to share recs last week!
So introducing my ficrec Fridays.
5 January 2024 ficrecs
Beggars Would Ride by tiamatv was recommended to me by @ilarual and I am so glad I dived in on their suggestion. Combining two of my great loves, destiel and disney's Aladdin, this AU fic has an absolutely gorgeous depiction of a genie Castiel, in all his trueform splendour! Tia does an incredible job interweaving the two stories, with street rat Dean doing what he must to support his brother and his community, and maybe just maybe finding love and freeing a genie in doing so.
Everlasting by @entropic-saudade (art by @golby-moon) is a recent fic from the stabfest bang, featuring a grieving post-15x18 Dean, and a still adjusting to having Kaia back Claire. It also beautifully examines the parallels between Dean and Claire, and their joint tendency for flirting with people by comparing scars. Achingly romantic, Dean is looking for a way to bring Cas back, and Claire is seeking a momento of Kaia to keep close to her forever...and what's love without a little stabbing?
As A Friend by imogenbynight (@thevioletcaptain) is absolutely best summed up by it's own summary: In which Dean accidentally learns about Castiel's porn preferences, and one thing leads to another. With one last chapter pending, this fic is a smutty delight, in which a newly human Cas in a post-Chuck defeated world and a still adjusting Dean learn a thing or two about each other and decide the best thing to do is lean into it with a secret no strings friends with benefits kink exploration set up...what could possibly go wrong?
doors unlocked and open by sidewinder (@hawkland, art by @fluffsnake) brilliantly combines The Winchesters finale with a post-canon continuation, in which Cas has become the new ruler and embodiment of the Empty whilst Jack is busy restructuring heaven. But Dean is not finding peace, not even in Jack’s improved afterlife, and has instead been traversing the Axis Mundi in the search of his family...in search of Castiel. But there might be a new fate to await them.
tie your wrists with leather by kalmialatifolia is a short but sweet post-canon D/S kinktober fic, in which Cas gets Dean spread eagle in leather cuffs leading to this exchange which captures their voices so perfectly:
“Jesus, Cas,” is all Dean says, and then, as Castiel crawls between his spread legs, “They—they smell good. They smell…” He laughs a little, a soft huff. “Like the Impala? Kind of?”
Castiel snorts, putting his hands on the backs of Dean’s knees and spreading his legs just a little farther apart. Dean goes easy. “Yes,” he says dryly, “I thought you might like that.”
and if that wets your appetite for a longer form wip, then reclusive secret romance novelist Dean and Priest with a past Cas are getting up to all sorts in their fic Benedictions.

So, I've been having this thought.
Crowley, perhaps post-bookshop divorce, is sitting in a pub or a coffee shop and the server calls his name, but they say it wrong.
They pronounce it like with the "ow" sound, like in Supernatural. And Crowley, mildly miffed, is like "where did you get that from?"
And the server is a Supernatural fan and explains that there's a demon named Crowley-like-owl-not-crow who helps stop the apocalypse.
And Crowley is like "imagine that. That's weird. Say more."
And the server explains a bit. How SPN!Crowley is this demon who is aware that should the big fight happen, he won't be counted among the winners regardless of which way it goes, and he just wants the world to keep on as it is, so he joins forces with the Winchesters and their renegade angel to stop it. He becomes King of Hell after to fill the power vacuum (and here GO!Crowley gives a bitter scoff) and he is both a villain and a hero and sometimes neither of those things.
Crowley inquires more about the angel, Castiel, and the server enthusiastically describes him. They remark that Crowley(spn) and Castiel have a fun dynamic, because they hate each other but also have to work together, because they're in love.
Crowley looks dumbfounded, and of course the server can't know why, but they do clarify that they are in love with Dean, not each other. Dean being a stand-in for humanity, of course, which is how the show runners wanted you to see it.
"But then at the end they FINALLY let Cas be all the way gay for Dean. Like, a decade of subtext and queer baiting denial, and FINALLY with 2 episodes left in the whole show, they let Cas tell Dean that he cares about humanity because he cares about Dean. Like, he actually gets to tell him he's in love with him."
A pause.
"Well, and then he gets sucked directly to Turbo Hell, so. That sucked. It went canon in THE most homophobic way possible, which is kind of on brand for the show--"
"Turbo hell?????? What is that, the tenth circle?"
"Oh, the place that angels and demons go when they die. The Empty. They don't get an afterlife, they just sleep forever and dream about the bad stuff. It's pretty awful, but Cas gets rescued from their off screen by the end so at least that's something-"
"What about the demon?"
"Oh, Crowley-like-owl? He got killed off for good at the end of season 12."
Crowley-like-crow stares through his sunglasses and the server elaborates again. For some reason, they haven't been called to other tables for anything the entire time they've been speaking.
"It was a good death, I think. He died to save the boys and trap Lucifer in another dimension- it's complicated. But he got to say that he actually hated being King of Hell, and he hated Lucifer, and he got to go out on a good deed. I think the actor was tired of the writers playing around with the character's arc. Walking back development, never committing to what they wanted to do with him... And that led to Crowley being kinda inconsistent and underappreciated. So he asked to be killed off and he walked away from the show."
"Huh. Shame, that."
"Yeah, everyone missed him. There are some characters that I REALLY wish he'd gotten to meet. And I also wish that he got a little more love."
"He was a demon. Love's not exactly in their repertoire."
"It's not supposed to be. It was, though. Cas practically invented free will because he loved Dean. And I guess Crowley also didn't fit into the mold God had set for him, either."
"I suppose God's Plan is... Ineffable in the show."
"I mean. Kinda at first? But the last season God is fully the bad guy."
"WHAT??"
Anyway, Crowley watches Supernatural and has no idea if he hates it or not. He probably does. But somehow, Crowley-like-owl and Castiel and their often unappreciative charges make his heart ache. He deliberately notes all the ways that Castiel is nothing like Aziraphale, thank you very much. He supposes he's glad that Adam never turned either of them into action figures.
He watches and he tries not to wish Aziraphale was watching with him.

Peace (A Soft Epilogue)
"Dean," A voice whispers as a warm hand shakes Dean gently by the shoulder.
Dean rises back to consciousness slowly, a recently-acquired skill (a luxury).
Sam's softly-smiling face appears before his bleary eyes. A slow blink brings him into better focus, the laughter lines around Sam’s eyes that are finally starting to overtake the worry wrinkles on his forehead come back into sharp relief. "We're gonna head out," He murmurs.
A glance over his shoulder. Eileen stands by the door, features softened by distance, but ready smile easily visible as she waves and holds up a hand that means 'I love you.'
Dean sends the message back left-handed (he's been practicing with both).
To Sam, he whispers, "You sure you don't wanna crash here? It's dangerous for old folks to drive after dark."
Sam shoots him an annoyed (and fond) look as he tries to hold back a grin. "I'm not the one who couldn't stay awake for my own movie marathon, Jerk."
"Hey," Dean protests (softly). "I ain't old, I'm just in a food coma, Bitch."
Sam stops holding back his grin. "Whatever you say, old timer." He easily dodges Dean's halfhearted swipe, then leans back in to squeeze Dean's shoulder. "Love you."
"Yeah, love you too," Dean huffs, mock-annoyed still (the words come out so easily now, turns out—like signing—they flow better with practice). "Now get out of here."
Sam chuckles as he heads for the door, knowing to lock it behind him as he goes (he and Eileen have keys).
Dean settles back against the warm wall of muscle at his back and squeezes the hand interlaced with his, never more glad that they'd shelled out for the ridiculously large sectional that allows them room to lie sandwiched together (and room for visiting family).
A bean bag chair stands alone against the far wall and Dean feels a bittersweet pang.
Cas stirs and squeezes the arm currently around Dean's waist (which has finally been allowed to grow softer and is currently stuffed full of good food and extra servings of pie). "You alright?" His voice is sleep-rough but somehow lighter than it's been in years.
"Yeah," Dean whispers back, unwilling to break this moment.
"Jack?" Powers or not, Cas has always been able to read Dean's mind.
Dean nods with a sigh.
Another squeeze. "I miss him too." Easy words breathed against the back of Dean's neck, like there could be no other answer, like a lifetime full of 'toughen up' and 'no one cares you're hurting' had been the exception, not the rule.
"He seemed happy, though." Dean thinks how excited Jack was, bouncing excitedly on the video call this afternoon, telling them about his new friends and how he'd been settling back into his dorm after the winter break.
Cas nods. "He'll be home soon, spring is just around the corner."
Dean nods back and nearly drifts off again. His phone pings with a notification at almost the same moment Cas' does.
They untangle themselves, but stay close as they sit up to check their phones.
Dean opens his messages, idly reminding himself to charge his phone tonight. The many birthday wishes from friends and family drained his battery today.
A text from Claire, Happy birthday, Hasselhoff. Brace yourself.
Cas laughs in the glow of his screen, his eyes scrunching up and sending a road map of lines across his temples that Dean would drive for the rest of time.
"Claire?"
Cas nods. "She sent us a 'warning,'" (his air quotes melt Dean's heart just that little bit more, like they always do.) Cas smiles bright. "She and Kaia are crashing at our place tomorrow on their way to Yosemite."
Dean grins back, relishing the thought of family in the guest room again.
He texts back, Bring it on, Barbie, And kindly doesn't mention that they are not even close to 'on the way' to Yosemite from Sioux Falls.
"They actually manage to scrounge up a case?" Dean asks, worry sending tension coiling across his shoulders. Turns out, Chuck lied. The world left behind after his defeat is calmer, with fewer monsters stirred to bloodlust, not more.
Cas shakes his head. "Road trip."
The tension releases, a smile taking its place. Dean sinks back into Cas' side, thoughts drifting to what his past self would think if he could see Dean now.
He always told himself he didn't want to get old, didn't want to deal with those aches and pains, didn't want to get slow. He told himself that living long enough to lose all his friends was really the worst thing. He told himself that going down swinging was the only way to go.
He ignored the pain of broken ribs and bleeding knuckles. He ignored how many friends he'd already lost. He ignored his own desire to live at peace and in safety.
Why hope for things you know you'll never have.
Dean chuckles, causing Cas to raise a questioning brow.
Dean takes a look around the home he’s built here with Cas and then leans in for a lingering kiss, knowing he'll be welcome, knowing he is loved by so many people (his family), no matter what.
He answers, smiling so wide his cheeks ache with it. "Just glad that past me was full of crap."

Sam lifts his head at the low, pained, hiss coming from the other side of the table, he does so just in time to see Castiel showing Dean his index finger without a word and a really offended expression on his face, like he would smite it out of existence if he was still able to use his powers.
Dean gives him a sympathetic look and, without either saying a word, he stands up from where he was sitting beside Cas and leaves the room.
Sam shrugs to himself and goes back to the article he was reading, from the local newspaper of a nearby city, leaving Cas to keep staring at his finger almost cross-eyed.
"Okay, let's see," Dean comes back to the room, carrying with him one of the travel size first aid kits they usually take with them to hunts, he sits down once more and opens it, rummaging around for a beat before taking out a band-aid with a triumphal hum.
He gently closes his hand around Cas' wrist and pulls it to himself to inspect the cut more closely. He made a promise to himself, Sam knows, that this time around Castiel's path through humanity wouldn't be as disastrous as the first one. He doesn't need Dean to say it out loud, he knows him well enough, the blame he carries, the need to take care of those around him. Dean takes the band-aid out of its paper wrap and proceeds to put it around Cas' finger.
Sam would joke about him coddling Cas, an ex-angel of the lord that has gone through much worse things than a paper cut. He would joke about the way Cas just lets him do whatever he wants, all while staring at him like Dean was the one who hung the Moon in the sky.
But he doesn't, in fact, he feels the need to shut up and look away, let them be, the simple moment too intimate for a reason he can't quite grasp. So that's what he does, he gets up and makes his way to one of the shelves, looking around for a book he doesn't need.
He turns around just in time to miss Dean kissing Castiel's covered finger, then his knuckles.
"Your first paper cut, man, welcome to Humanity." He says, a smile clear in his voice.
"I am glad everything humans experience isn't as agonizing as this," Castiel deadpans, he is being dramatic but Sam knows is just to get to laugh.
It works like a charm, "yeah, I mean, there are pretty great things humans experience, right Cas?" Sam doesn't need to turn around to know his brother is giving the angel a sultry look, he lowers his voice but Sam can still here him since he is only a couple of feet away from them, "like that thing we tried last night when you-"
"Guys, I'm still here." Sam reminds them, frantically.
"Sorry Sammy."
Sam shakes his head, that didn't sound like an apology at all.

An underrated part of the confession scene is Dean saying
“…she’s going to come through that door and she’s going to kill you, and then me”
because like, it’s saying
Dean knows Cas, who is not the true target of Billie's wrath, is going to get in between them to protect Dean and Dean can’t do shit to stop Cas and he knows it, and
Billie wants Dean to suffer for what he’s done to her and he knows that she knows that watching Cas die for his sake is going to destroy him more then actually killing him eventually will
and then of course Cas goes and dies in front and for Dean anyway. And honestly it could be argued Billie does get Dean in the end, Cas dies to take her down and Dean has just…given up by the time he gets impaled in that barn, much like he’s done in the past when Cas has died, it just took longer this time and he hid it better. Tho at least he gets to heaven and isn’t thrown in the Empty like she planned so she didn’t fully “win” there.
But yeah, Dean knows Cas WILL die first because of Dean, he has not hope Cas survives or is spared for the above reasons and it’s tearing him up so bad before Cas just derails him with like, his worst nightmare*
*(That worst nightmare being:
Cas dies in front of him
That Dean has personally corrupted poisoned, and ruined Cas somehow is being proven because Dean taught him to love
Cas confirming he’s choosing to die FOR Dean because Cas loves him therefore:
~*~Everyone Dean loves will choose to leave him eventually forever because he’s poison and ruins them~*~
Soooo yeah. We all rightfully rage against the 15x20 aka Rusty Nail ending as like the worst ending for Dean, that him dying young on a hunt after never finding love or happiness of his own to keep, was an uninspired and a very “Chuck Wins, the brothers can’t escape their Season 1 character archetype” end, but Dean's own personal&emotional&spiritual “death” happened in 15x18, where almost every secret fear Dean's heart is proven “true” only he was still technically alive after)
Wah.
Cas will try to save Dean and Dean will have to watch Cas die (again) before he too will die. :'CCC
And I'm still so angry at that finale to give us a Dean who we have no reason to believe that he even tried to save Cas the moment that Chuck stopped being a problem. He says, shortly before he gets killed on screen, that the way to honor the people they've lost is by living and he doesn't even do that. Like... ugh. (I will never be over that, will I?)
Though I don't think I agree with you regarding Cas' death reinforcing Dean's thoughts that everyone chooses to leave him because he is poison. You can certainly make an argument for that, especially considering how Dean isn't even trying once he gets out of that dungeon. He can keep up the front long enough to survive, but he's on his way out. And I love that angst.
But I feel it would do Cas a disservice, so I don't really want to interpret it that way *lol* (also, I want to undo 15x20 so I don't tend to follow through to the bitter end) I mean disservice in the sense that Cas' heartfelt words would completely miss their mark. Despite the fact that Cas wanted Dean to understand just how much he is loved by him, by Dean embedding that love into a narrative of "I'm poison, everyone is leaving me" it gets twisted - not an emotion that Cas is feeling freely, but a flaw. And also a disservice because it would turn the love confession from a key moment for Cas to a boy melodrama moment for Dean *lol* Like, would he just not try to get Cas back because Cas being stuck in the empty is better than being out and loving Dean?
So yes, if we follow it to the bitter end, which is the mimepire fatality, then yes, I think your interpretation makes a lot of sense.
I just want to live in that moment after 15x18, where there was so much possibility for love to triumph instead of Chuck eventually winning whether he planned it that way or not.
But I'm glad that no matter how we interpret it we are in agreement about 15x20. Burning rage that can only be soothed by being undone in my opinion X3

au where dean is a country music star who has been hiding from the world for a year due to being outed as bisexual and then having his fanbase turn on him. he finally emerges for a coffee one day and is almost unrecognizable and when cas approaches him just asking if anything is wrong dean is like oh thank god he doesn’t recognize me.
dean vaguely explains his whole situation before cas tells him that he knows who he is only because claire started listening to his music after he was outed and how she thinks its super cool that there are queer country artists out there. and dean starts sobbing and saying he doesn’t write songs anymore, he can’t, and cas just smiles at him and says it’s okay and he does enough and he can rest.
dean comes back the next week with wired earbuds and a demo for cas. i’m not at my best, i mean, my reputation has never been worse, so, you must like me for me. i can’t make any promises now can i? but maybe i’ll grab a drink. and it’s so charming and dean is strumming his guitar in the background (yes its modified lyrics to delicate by taylor swift shush dean is taylor in this au maybe) and cas just smiles and says thank you to dean.
and every week dean comes back with more samples of demos and things and most of them are angry, he’s angry about what happened, but some of them are soft and lovely. dean hands the phone to cas one week and looks away and cas is confused and then he turns on the song and it’s pretty lovey dovey, just ten second portions of lyrics before dean goes back to the drawing board. his starry eyes could spark up the darkest night, mmmmm, uh, i’ll call it what i want to, yeah, call him what i want to, woah, i’d let him put his initial on a chain for my neck, yeah, not because he owns me, just ‘cause he really knows me,
and cas is so overcome with emotion that he just grabs deans hand and pulls him into an alleyway and kisses him silly and dean is confused because “i thought i crossed a line, you were talking about claire, you have a daughter, i didn’t want to assume but-“ and cas is just breathlessly laughing that claire is his niece and he is very gay and very much smitten with dean and he’s so glad dean likes talking to him as much as he likes talking to dean.
so ofc dean drags cas back to his house and blows him and they fuck silly and of course dean freaks out that cas got what he wanted and will go to the press but in the morning cas is playing a melody on the piano and softly mumbling the call it what i want to, call him what i want to, and dean knows he found his inspiration again.
anyway theres more but im tired so. maybe ill notes app it tmr on the long drive i have.

established destiel, light angst, dean winchester’s birthday
Cas is acting strange.
Cas is always a little odd, but usually Dean loves that about him. And in the last few years they’ve been in a really good place.
Until Dean started noticing Cas coming home with bruises he didn’t have that morning or scrapes he definitely didn’t get from crocheting or working at the library. He’s been coming home from extra pottery classes and immediately jumping in the shower.
And Dean’s glad he’s exploring a new skill. Glad he’s making more friends.
But it feels like he’s hiding something.
keep reading below or on AO3
Cas is always a little odd, but usually Dean loves that about him. And in the last few years they’ve been in a really good place.
Until Dean started noticing Cas coming home with bruises he didn’t have that morning or scrapes he definitely didn’t get from crocheting or working at the library. He’s been coming home from extra pottery classes and immediately jumping in the shower.
And Dean’s glad he’s exploring a new skill. Glad he’s making more friends.
But it feels like he’s hiding something.
Dean notices Cas' red, chafed knuckles as they’re getting ready for bed one night.
He catches Cas' hand. "Hey, what's this? What happened?"
Cas doesn't quite meet his eyes as he simply gets into his side of the bed. He shuts off the light and gets comfortable.
"Oh, I must have just knocked my hand against something. Or maybe it's that new lotion from Sam. It's not as protective as the kind you buy."
Dean softens a bit. "Here, I have some in my drawer," he says, rummaging around for the container. "Aha."
Cas allows Dean to apply the lotion and thanks him with a kiss. They settle in for sleep, Dean pressed against Cas’ front and Cas’ arm curled around Dean. Soon, Dean feels his breathing even out. Once Cas is asleep, he lets the heaviness pull him under, but something still seems off. How do you accidentally knock all of your knuckles red?
In the morning he notices blisters.
“-ean. Dean, it’s your turn!”
Dean looks up from his Fresca at the Catan board, which looks completely different and he has no idea who has what resources and who needs ‘em. Benny, Garth, Ash, and Keven stare at him worriedly. Well, Kevin just stares.
“Sorry, guys. My head’s just not in it tonight.” They usually have a game/movie night on the last Saturday of each month, but two days ago Benny texted and said they were going to move it up to celebrate Dean’s birthday. Dean had protested, saying they didn’t need to rearrange their schedules for him but Benny insisted. So here he is. Cranky and worried, trying not to ruin game night.
With a glance to Benny, Garth decides they should call it and Ash takes the win. Everyone cleans up the game and disperses to get more snacks before reconvening for a movie, Dean’s choice. Benny catches Dean in the kitchen, getting another soda.
“Dean, I can tell something’s wrong.”
Knowing Benny won’t let him get away with just shrugging it off, Dean explains Cas’ weird behavior.
“And he’s at another pottery class tonight. He never goes on Saturdays.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.” Benny squeezes his shoulder.
Dean narrows his eyes, “So you agree, it sounds like something is going on?”
“No, no, I didn’t say that!” Benny steers him back towards the living room where Ash has the menu for The Fellowship of the Ring pulled up. Garth and Kevin are already in the two armchairs so Dean settles in one corner of the couch, hugging a throw pillow to his chest.
“Here we go!” Ash says as he pushes play and flops onto the other end of the couch next to Benny. “Try to stay awake for this, Dean-o!”
Garth tosses some popcorn at Dean, “Aw this is one of his favorites, no way he’s falling asleep.”
Dean can feel Benny’s eyes bore into the side of his head as he resolutely stares at the opening title sequence.
“Yeah, it’s not even 8 yet,” Kevin chimes in. Dean doesn’t believe the kid even sleeps at all.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
As Frodo declares he’ll take the ring to Mordor and the fellowship is assembled, the first disc ends and Ash gets up to change it, Dean stands too. “Guys, thanks for all of this, I really appreciate it, but I’m gonna head home.”
Everyone starts talking at once.
“Dude, you can’t leave mid-movie!”
“I haven’t even brought out the birthday pie and ice cream!”
“We haven’t even gotten to the good part yet, cher.”
“Bess made an apple pie just for you!”
“C’mon, you’re not that old, yet. Benny’s, like, a thousand years old and he’s running circles around you.” They all glare at Kevin, who still hasn’t looked up from his phone.
Dean looks around the room at his friends and can’t help but think the one person he really wants to spend time with is slipping away.
“Sorry, guys. I’m just in a mood today.” He starts moving towards the door as they all call out goodbyes and happy birthdays. Benny follows him and grabs his elbow before he can close the door and hands him the apple pie.
“Dean, I’m sure everything is fine.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because it’s Cas.”
“Yeah,” Dean says, grimly. “And it’s me.”
Benny lets him close the door.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dean closes the front door a little harder than he should and shrugs his coat off. He's hanging the car keys up when the floorboards creak down the hall. He swings around, hand reaching for his pocket knife, and sees his husband frozen outside the gaming room that hasn't been used since Jack moved out. Lights on. Another voice softly calling Cas' name.
"Cas?"
Cas flounders, running a hand through his hair before wrapping his arms around his middle protectively. Protective from what? Dean tries to settle the fear rolling through him. Surely he imagined the voice.
"You're home early," Cas says, finally.
"Yeah, I left before- you said you had a class tonight."
"I did say that-"
"Why is the light on in there? You never go in there unless Jack or I drag you."
"Dean-" a sneeze interrupts him.
Dean pales. Cas has someone over. Cas is hiding someone. Then, Dean notices the sweat on Cas' skin. His flushed face.
“Cas,” Dean gulps, “who else is here?”
Cas looks even more guilty. He turns back towards the game room. “Helen, you can come out.”
A woman who looks vaguely familiar steps out, dressed in dusty overalls and a flannel. Seems Cas has a type.
Dean desperately tries to make sense of everything. The sneaking. The lying. The woman clearly dressed in work clothes holding a toolbox. Anything could be in there.
"Dean, you remember Helen from my pottery class?"
He nods, voice lodged in his throat. He remembers hearing about Helen a lot. Cas was at her house just the other day... and last week… because she has a throwing wheel... and they don't have space for one…
“What’s going on?” Dean can hold it together until she leaves. He can. He will.
Helen glances between the two men, visibly uncomfortable. “I’m gonna-” she gestures toward the front door.
Cas’ eyes jump to her as if he forgot she was there. “Of course, let me-” Cas leads her to the front door.
Dean stomps into the kitchen while they have a whispered conversation. He puts a new filter in the coffee pot. Opens the jar of decaf coffee. Wishes he still had that bottle of whiskey hidden behind the baking supplies. Scoops probably too much coffee grounds into the filter. Can feel Cas fidgeting in the entryway while he fills up the carafe with water and pours it into the coffee maker.
“Dean, it’s not what you think.”
He punches the ON button and spins around.
“Oh? So you haven’t been lying to me and going over to a woman’s house instead of pottery class?”
“Well, technically-”
“Technically? I’m thinking some pretty dark things here, Cas, so just explain what the hell is going on.”
Dean hasn’t seen Cas look this small since Jack moved out. It takes some of the wind out of his sails.
“I think you should just come see.”
Cas starts walking to the back of the house. Dean hesitates before following. He reaches the doorway beside Cas and freezes.
“I’ve been working on this for several weeks, mostly at Helen’s so you wouldn’t see. I asked Benny to plan a game night for your birthday so that I could bring everything over and surprise you.”
Dean steps into the old gaming room and takes in Cas’ handiwork. What used to be a mostly empty room with a tv stand and some old bean bag chairs was now a very cozy… study?
“Benny was supposed to keep you until nine, at least.” Cas says, hovering in the doorway.
Two comfy looking armchairs sit on either side of the window, both with foot rests. A small table sits between them with one of Cas’ plants and some coasters. Two of Cas’ crocheted blankets cover the backs of the chairs.
“Yeah, well, I wasn’t really in the party mood.” Dean continues to take in the room. There are two tall bookcases on one side of the room. Deeper shelves for records on the other. Next to that, a record player.
“Since Jack moved out this room has just been a reminder of what used to be. I wanted to give the space some new life.”
"You did all of this?"
“I brought all of your books and records out of storage. I know you keep your favorites in the living room, but I thought it was a shame to keep everything else shut away. Sam and Eileen bought you this refurbished record player".
Dean turns shining eyes to Cas. “And Helen?”
Cas finally steps inside the room. "Helen also does carpentry. She helped me build all of these shelves."
“So, that’s why you started having all those mystery scratches and bruises.”
Cas nods, “I felt bad misleading you, but I wanted this to be a surprise.”
Relief wells up inside Dean. He’s never been happier to be proved wrong.
"Is this your crochet supplies?" Dean asks, inspecting the last set of shelves.
"I thought it would be nice to have a space we didn't have to tidy or worry about when we have company over or babysit. Mary and Joanna's toys are taking over the living room." Cas pauses, trying to catch Dean’s eyes. “What do you think?”
Dean sinks down into one of the chairs and buries his face in his hands. “I thought you were leaving me.”
Cas takes his face in his calloused hands and gently lifts it, thumbs wiping away tears. “Dean, I’m so sorry.” He pulls Dean into a hug and rubs his back. “I would never.”
“I know. I don’t deserve you.”
“No, but you have me anyway.”
“The room is awesome. I love you.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
There are two armchairs, but they’re squeezed into one, giggling as they try not to spill their (decaf) coffee. Dean gently presses a kiss to each of Cas’ red knuckles. Dean gently presses a kiss to each of Cas’ red knuckles. They melt into each other as Like Real People Do by Hozier plays softly across the room.
"I feel bad, we should invite Helen over for dinner to say thank you."
"Yes, and her wife."
A delirious laugh bubbles out of Dean. "And her wife."

Suptober 2023-Day 7: Black Cat
Midnight-642 words on AO3 or below Summary: Jack comes home with a surprise.
Dean and Cas are in the Dean Cave quietly catching up on their backlog of tv shows when they hear the bunker door slam open. “Cas!” They hear Jack yell. “Where are you?” he calls excitedly. They share a look, both afraid about what's got Jack so excited.
“In Dean’s cave.” Cas responds. It’s hard to prepare yourself when the one bringing the news is an ex-god nephilim.
Jack walks into the room with a black bundle in his arms. “Look what I found.” He says softer now than how he entered the bunker. He opens his arms revealing a small black cat.
Dean instantly gets up from the couch to stand at the other end of the room. “No no no no. Don’t bring that thing in here.” he says, panicked. “I can already feel my eyes watering.”
Cas rolls his eyes. “Dean, please calm down, you’re going to scare her.” Cas goes up to Dean pressing two fingers to his forehead. “There, that should calm any side effects from your allergy.”
“Jack,” Cas turns back to him, calmly. “Where did you find her?”
Jack places her on the floor. Dean is ready to protest about a cat traipsing all over this room but one shake of the head from Cas stops him.
“Outside in the area next to the bunker. When we got home last night I felt like there was something different in the area. I don’t really know how to explain it but I went out to investigate and found her.” He says, happily.
“Uh don’t you think it’s a little dangerous so go exploring by yourself based on unknown feelings?” Dean says, cautious. First a cat in his room and now Jack drops this bomb.
Jack laughs. “Don’t be silly, Dean. I knew the feeling wasn’t dangerous.” He looks at him, more serious now. “I would never put myself in danger.”
Dean sighs in relief. “Ok. That’s good.” Jack may still be a powerful nephilim but he’s still a kid.
Cas takes off his tie, tangling it in front of the cat. She swats at it playfully. “You know we can’t keep her, right Jack?”
“Yeah because I’m allergic!” Dean says from the other side of the room. Cas may have alleviated his allergy symptoms but he still wants to keep his distance.
Cas glares at him. “Because I believe I saw a lost cat flier for her the last time we were in town.”
Jack sits on the floor taking the tie to play with her. “Yeah, Midnight. I thought it was her too. I wanted to get your opinion before I got the number to call and take her back.” He says bummed. Having a cat would be nice.
He stands, picking up Midnight and handing Cas his tie. “I’ll go where we saw the flier and call them.” He’s a second from flying off when Cas stops him.
“How about I drive you?” Cas suggests. “That way you can spend a little more time with her before taking her home.” He hands the tie back.
Jack lights up. “Ok! I’ll meet you in the garage.” He leaves holding out the tie for her to play while he holds her close.
Dean laughs. “I’m glad the cat already has a home. I was scared Jack was going to ask to keep her.” He says relieved.
“And would that have been a problem?” Cas asks. “And before you say anything, allergies can be cured. At least Jack or I could.”
“Well…I mean.” Dean stutters.
Cas saves him from continuing. “It’s ok, Dean, I don’t expect you to answer that now. A decision like getting a pet requires a conversation.” He winks at him before turning to leave. “We’ll be back in a bit.”
Dean stands there defeated. No way are they not getting a cat soon.

AU where Dean is Claire’s t-ball coach.
He doesn’t care too much for her parents—they’re fine. Bit boring, but fine.
One day, Jimmy starts acting like an asshole and Dean doesn't know why, but's it's...very vexing. He doesn't know what crawled up his ass and died, but fuckyouverymuch, Jimmy.
---
There's a pattern to it. Whenever Amelia isn't there, Jimmy becomes a bastard. A whole year goes by, and Dean feels a little swimmy around Jimmy sometimes, but he manages to ignore it. It's wildly inappropriate, for one. Awkward as Hell for two.
---
The next year, he stays with the same group of kids. It's coach-pitch and boy, that's a blast. Claire makes it a personal goal to hit Dean with a line drive, the little shit.
Unfortunately, as the kids get older, the parents get crazier. Usually, it's nothing he can't de-escalate.
Until the day of the disaster.
---
They're playing one of those fancy, over-country teams. You know the kind, completely branded from bag to cleat. Matching shoelaces. Parents with "I <3 my shortstop" tee-shirts.
God.
The trouble starts when Sam's the only umpire available. He does it part-time, and usually he never calls Dean's games.
This is why.
Halfway through the game, one of the opposing parents figures out that Sam's Dean's brother, and it all goes downhill from there.
---
Dean's team scrapes a win, but Dean would happily give it up to avoid the whole fiasco--the accusations of cheating.
It gets worse and worse, until one of the parents is spitting in Dean's face after the game, screaming and cussing and making the worst scene Dean's ever been apart of.
Just as Sam is about the step in, it transforms from a bad scene to national news-in-the-making. SOB pulls a gun, and Dean's older brother instincts kick in, stepping in front of Sam's giant body to shield him.
That's when Jimmy comes flying out of the crowd and like a linebacker pummels the crazy parent to the ground, breaking his hold on the gun. Once he has him down, Jimmy clonks him brutally in the forehead, a Glasgow kiss that knocks him out cold.
Dean doesn't usually need help--he'd been a wrestling champ in high school--but hot damn if his ill-advised attraction to Jimmy hasn't come roaring back to life in an instant.
Claire, too brave and not at all aware of the danger, dances around the felled goon, cheering Jimmy on. "Dad," she shrieks, and Dean can't tell if she's happy or upset, "Cas killed the bad guy, Cas killed the bad guy!"
Something about that is confusing.
Cas?
And Dean does a double take as Jimmy's gentler-looking double steps into view, concerned but relieved. Dean blinks, looks between the Jimmy on the ground and the Jimmy standing just a few feet away.
Amelia says, "The cops are on their way. Jesus, I'm glad Cas was here."
Dean cant' help it. He blurts, "Cas?"
And now it's Jimmy's turn to look perplexed. "You've met my brother. He's been bringing Claire to games for two years."
Cas doesn't move from his deadly pin, but he fixes Dean with a steely, x-ray-vision-kinda-look.
"I--I thought he was you this whole time."
Jimmy and Amelia exchange knowing looks, like this is typical behavior for Cas. Jimmy steps forward to swat his brother on the back of the head. "You didn't introduce yourself?"
Cas shrugs.
The man underneath him groans, apparently coming back to life. Only when the cops arrive does Cas ease his grip on him.
When he stands, Dean tries to introduce himself, awkwardly shoving out a hand with a, "Thanks for that. Guess you're Cas then?"
Cas looks at his hand with deep suspicion before taking it and giving it a firm squeeze that goes right to Dean's toes.
How could Dean have missed it? This guy is nothing like Jimmy. He's not even wearing a wedding band.

Tell me about s6 WIP? Currently in s6 on my rewatch
Ooohokay the premise is that Dean becomes convinced that Cas is watching him during s6 while he's living with Lisa, so he starts like, pointedly acting out to prove how good and fine he is and amazing his life is. So like, he finally gets out of bed and showers and cleans his room and goes shopping to start- like see I'm not depressed I'm doing great fuck you. And then he starts crafting all of these heavily romantic moments with Lisa to be like, my suberban fever dream IS perfect actually thank you for asking.
Meanwhile Lisa is totally oblivious to the fact that Dean thinks they're dating (because he's just like, some guy she let stay in her guest room) and is like, going on dates and having girls nights and living her best life.
Eventually, Lisa is like, "Sweetie I'm so glad you're doing a little better, maybe i's time to talk about what comes next."
And Dean is like, "What do you mean what comes next we're in love"
And Lisa is like, "Are we?"
And Dean has to face what love actually means to him- and it's NOT the performative, bringing home flowers and mowing the lawn type situation he has going on with Lisa.
Cas on the other hand totally falls for it and eventually shows up pissed like, why the fuck are you rubbing this in my face?!
And then I'm assuming they have a dramatic realization of mutual pining. Here are some excerpts:
But Cas can’t be watching him, because he’s off somewhere saving the world. Which is fine with Dean. Let someone else do it for once. He rolls over and goes back to sleep.
Something tugs at him, pulls at the back of his mind, tugs him up and out of sleep until he’s blinking filmy eyes against the thin yellow sunlight. Because if Cas *is* watching him, then he sure as shit isn’t watching him sleep. He sits up, ignores the painful twist at the small of his back, throws the covers off of his legs and hauls himself to his feet.
. . . .
He has dinner waiting for Lisa when she gets home.
“This is very sweet, but I already ate. The girls and I got dinner after class.”
“What?”
“Dean,” she says, carefully like she doesn’t know how to break it to him, “you haven’t gotten out of bed for the last few weeks, I thought-”
“I’ve gotten out of bed!
Dean sits and eats dinner alone. He’s glad Cas probably isn’t watching, so he probably isn’t seeing this."
. . . .
"Lisa pauses at the foot of the stairs, keeping her balance with her hand on the railing as she toes into her heels. Her long brown hair falls soft over one shoulder.
"I'm going out actually, but that sounds fun."
Dean slaps his hands on the tops of his thighs,
"Great," he says, with forced gusto, "I'll watch Ben."
Lisa gives him a funny look,
"Ben is with his grandparents,"
Dean frowns. Ben was definitely here when he got here. He's got a distinct memory of him running into the livingroom on that first night, Dean slunped over on the couch with his head in his hands. The next week is something of a blur, but he thinks he saw him in the kitchen once, right after, and later in the yard fucking around with some of the other kids from the neighborhood. But since then… he rubs at his aching forehead.
"Dean?" Lisa has abandoned her heels and has come to stand before him. Dean doesn't recognize her perfume.
"Yeah," he says, forcing a smile onto his face. He drops his hand back to his side with a small shake, "You look nice."
Lisa frowns up at him,
"Are you feeling okay? Maybe you should lie down."

driving out into the sun (not gonna go down with my hometown in a tornado) (Supernatural finale fix-it)
Destiel. Supernatural finale fix-it. Crossposted on ao3. Title is from “I Know The End” by Phoebe Bridgers.
Fuck this.
Fuck no happy endings. Fuck dying without a cause. Fuck letting the Empty steal away the love of his life and Heaven stealing away the dreams that Dean has only let himself believe in since he met an angel and finally began to peel away the layers of self-doubt and self-sabotage that his father wrapped him in since before he could remember.
Dean's not a good man. He'd never pretend otherwise. He doesn't think he's capable of it, after everything he was made into by his father, after everything he's been, after everything he's done.
But he's okay with that. Good men go to heaven. Great men get remembered.
Men like him- broken, abused, ruined, dead, undead, alive, breathing, surviving men- get their own fate. They don't have heaven or hell. They have earth and all it has to give them.
And for the first time in Dean's life, he's not looking at the road. At least, not as his father did. Not as Dean did, for over twenty years.
The road is not heaven. The road is not the hunt. The road is not endless nights alone or hooking up with strangers, facing down death as everyone Dean has ever cared about or loved receives a tragic ending.
The road is just...there. A path. A choice. A possibility.
A fate that Dean gets to choose for himself.
And some parts of the road he still wants. He was named after Dean Moriarty, after all. The road is a part of his identity. Baby carries his soul- what's left of it- everywhere he goes.
But there are other parts of his identity. Bobby. Jody. Claire. Jack. Sam. Cas.
Cas.
If you had asked Dean twelve years ago (or dozens, or hundreds, or thousands, or whatever fucked up amount of time has truly passed in between countless deaths and trips to other dimensions and heaven and hell and possession and time and space and survival) what he thought he'd be doing in 2020, he probably wouldn't have said scooping up his brother and almost sister-in-law and his adopted son and asking said adopted son to carve them a way into the Empty. He can't find it in himself to care. His previous self needs to grow up and realize that cynicism and pessimism doesn't equal maturity. John Winchester was a shitty role model.
Cas is sitting on the ground, head in his knees, so impossibly, horribly still when they arrive, but his head snaps up the moment that Jack's sneaker hits the ground in the Empty. His blue eyes are wide and incredulous as Jack runs forward and engulfs his father in a hug. Cas, shellshocked, wraps his arms around Jack's shoulders in turn and squeezes tight, tucking Jack's head under his chin and closing his eyes, expression trembling as he reunites with his son.
Dean gives them a few minutes to reunite before speaking up. "So, Cas," He says, and he's trying to be gruff, trying not to overwhelm Cas, but his eyes are burning with tears and he's done trying to pretend like he doesn't care. Chuck's gone. Jack's god. Cas loves him like he loves Cas. "Glad to see you again." It's a pitiful greeting, considering everything that sits between them, but Dean can roll with it.
Cas' eyes snap open and he looks at him over Jack's shoulder. Swallows, adam's apple bobbing. Opens his mouth and then closes it. "You all came," he eventually says, and it somehow feels more question than statement.
Sam nods. "'Course we did. No leaving a brother behind."
Jack nods, too, hair scratching Cas' chin, but he doesn't mind, not if his fragile smile is any indication. "No use becoming God if I couldn't rescue you, Dad."
Cas rears back, eyes going wide. "You did what, Jack?"
Jack beams and holds out his hands. A glowing orb rises from his right palm before splitting itself into five smaller orbs that dance between his fingers, bright as his smile when someone hands him nougat. "I became God. Chuck was doing a bad job and you were a bit waylaid, so I took his place. And before you worry, Dean and Sam and Eileen and Rowena and Charlie and Anna and Bobby and Kevin and Adam and everyone else all agreed to help me out, give me advice and taking on some of the responsibility when needed." If possible, Jack's smile only grows brighter as he snaps his fingers, vanishing the orbs as he says: "The four of us can still make it to Kansas for Christmas if we want."
Cas' jaw drops. He knows as well as they do that most of those names are dead. "What do you mean...?"
"Turns out you can do a lot when you're God," Eileen signs, smile soft. "Including making one boy very, very happy by making him understand that he is very, very loved."
"And he's not the only one," Dean says, stepping forward. Cas' blue eyes focus on him, his expression almost terrifyingly tentative with hope. "You left before I could answer your question."
Cas' brow furrows in that adorable confusion of his. Dean's looking forward to learning as many ways as possible to soothe that wrinkle away- starting with kiss. "I don't remember asking a question."
"Then let me tell you something, Castiel," Dean says, and takes one last step forward and takes Cas' hand in his. "I'm not good with words, but you know that. You know me. And you love me. And I love you too. So if you don't mind, then...?"
If you had asked Dean twelve years ago how he would experience the first time he saw Castiel kiss someone, he probably would have laughed. Cas, kissing someone? Does he even know how to do that?
He definitely wouldn't have guessed that it would involve Cas leaning forward, grabbing the back of Dean's neck with a surprisingly soft yet strong palm, and pulling him in for a kiss. Dean goes gladly, savoring Cas' mouth on his, those lips that are shockingly warm for the unending, maddening neutrality of the Empty.
But life is full of surprises, and Dean has learned over the past few years that as long as said surprises don't involve monsters, demons, or an all-mighty writer who calls himself Chuck, he actually does enjoy a surprise or two.
After all, that's how he got the angel in front of him, isn't it?
Cas pulls back with a smile and a squeeze of their conjoined hands, and Dean can't help but mirror Cas' smile, lovely and loving and finally, wonderfully, his.
They get back into Baby to leave this wretched place. Sam, Eileen, and Jack cram into the backseat while Cas pulls shotgun, as he's meant to. Dean's not letting anyone take that from him ever again: him and Cas in the front seat, heading off on an adventure, details to be determined by them, for them.
"Where am I taking us?" Jack pipes up from the backseat, and Dean offers out his right hand across the console to Cas, who gazes at it in wonder for a second- thankfully no longer, as it probably would have started to feel a bit weird- before taking it in his with a squeeze.
"Where do you want, Cas?" Dean asks, voice as gentle as he can make it. He's not good at gentle, not good at tender, but he's willing to learn. He's willing to try. For Cas, for his family, for everyone who loved him and didn't hurt him.
Cas smiles at him, and this time, it isn't cautious. It isn't tentative. It is brilliant and unrestrained, just as Cas is meant to be. "Wherever you want, Jack."
Sam lets out a whoop from the back and Dean glances in the mirror to see his brother lean over and wrap a brotherly arm around Jack's shoulder as he gives Eileen a peck on the cheek. Eileen rolls her eyes but captures his lips for a quick kiss in return.
Dean pulls his and Cas' conjoined hands up far enough to flick on the radio. Dean grins as a trusty classic begins to pour from the radio, the familiar beat of "Carry On, My Wayward Son" filling the car with its joyous, wonderful sound.
The world isn't ending. Not anymore. Not for a very, very fucking long time.
He and Cas are finally free. They are going on the road. They are making their own world. They are making their own choices.
Dean refuses to accept anything less. They all- he, Cas, Sam, Jack, Eileen, everyone who they loved and lost- deserve, if not to be happy, then to at least heal and be allowed to make their own story outside of Chuck's.
Sam can go stay on the hunt or finally go finish his law degree. Charlie can get a girlfriend and take her to Comic-Con without fear of a monster attack. Jody and her wife can attend all of the science conventions and gun ranges with their girls as their hearts can possibly desire. Rowena can be Queen of Hell. Kevin Tran can reunite with his mother and go to college. Anna can try out truly being a human again. Adam can figure out what's going on with him and Michael. Bobby can run the salvage yard and hand out wisdom to all of the kids running around, from Jack to Kevin to Claire to all of the rest of Jody's girls.
Or not. Some of them might throw away their old paths for new ones. Maybe Bobby will start a restaurant. Maybe Anna will become an astronaut. Maybe Adam will start a hot sauce company. Maybe Jack, Claire, and Kevin will create a band. Maybe Charlie might start dating Rowena. Who knows and who cares? It's not Dean's place to decide.
All that matters to him is what he and Cas decide to do next- and that everyone's home for the holidays, so they can finally have the big, chaotic, messy, loud family dinner that will probably drive everyone insane. It's going to be horrible and wild and absolutely wonderful.
By God- or, rather, by Jack- Dean can't wait.

Hello! I love your blog. (I discovered some of my favorite fics/authors thanks to you.) I wondered if you have any more Unsupportive or Estranged Sam stories because they are difficult to find and they are my jam. Anyway, your blog is great <3
So glad you've found some favourites. Yes! Love unsupportive Sam! Also the estranged thing is great, since I've been wanting to do something with that topic too, (its just slightly harder to find - at least in canonverse) Basically all great stories if you wanna be annoyed at Sam for a while. (from the below, Haunt Me... and Propensities of Good Men are great for a 'Sam's being a dick' angle)
Unsupportive Sam.
You'll Get Him Back - coffeeaddict13 Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU. When Dean tells Sam that he is in love with Cas, Sam doesn’t react well at first.
Word Count: 3k No Sex
Sam lies. - Petra1999 Ao3
Nonspecific timeframe. He’s happy for them, he really is. It doesn’t stop Sam being jealous that Cas gets so much of Dean’s time now that they’re together
Word Count: 1k No Sex
The Propensities of Good Men – thevinegarworks LiveJournal
Set S4 AU. When Dean gets whammied by a sex demon, things aren’t looking good. Despite knowing the danger he brings his brother, Sam is more than happy to facilitate going on the run because he is untrusting of the new relationship that sprung up between Dean and Cas. (There is a bunch of grey-area non-con because of the mentioned sex demon compulsion)
Word Count: 140k Graphic Sexual Acts
These are specifically stories where they become estranged during the course of the show, not Stanford era.
Haunt Me Through the Night – KissingTinyFlowers Ao3
Set 15x20 didn’t happen AU. Grieving and knowing that if he goes hunting he likely won’t come back alive, Dean leaves the bunker and its memories (and Sam) behind, ending up in Sioux Falls, where he learns Bobby left everything he owned to him and Sam. Giving the collection of cabins to Sam so he can set up a hunter network that Dean wants nothing to do with now that he’s retired, Dean rebuilds Bobby’s house to live in, while he figures out what to do with a life with no Cas in it. But maybe he won’t have to worry about that.
Word Count: 83k Graphic Sexual Acts
Balance And New Beginnings - Hekate1308 Ao3
Set S12. When he finds out that Sam as well as Mary are working for BMoL, Dean says goodbye and walks away, going to hunt with Cas. Together with Crowley they start to develop a new way of hunting, which is only targeting the supernatural creatures who are causing harm and protecting the benign ones from the BMoL genocidal plans.
Word Count: 54k No Sex

my most beloved fics (of mine)
howdy, here are the fics i've written that are my specialist little princesses <3 i spent a lot of time on all of these and they mean a lot to me in different ways. i did notice when looking at these fics that all of them have claire in them, so maybe that's the common thread here.
gifts given & words unspoken
4k, gen, mostly dean & claire but background deancas, set in s12
“Hey, Claire,” Dean says. She nods at him distractedly. “What do you think of the place?” Dean hadn’t known she was coming over. He looks at Cas, who shrugs at him, and then shifts his gaze back to Claire, still standing on the bottom step. Her eyes cycle through a few emotions, then she shrugs. “Lame,” she says. or Cas brings an injured Claire back to the bunker to have dinner and spend the night.
this one took a long time for me to write because i had such a vivid vision of what i wanted it to be and it was hard to put that vision to paper. i wanted it to be complicated and a little messy and i'm really glad i spent so much time on it, i think it turned out just how i wanted it to.
the lord of the lake (and i don't want to leave it)
29k, t, aspecnatural, emmanatural, lordhuronnatural, hohnatural, deancas, post-15x19 fix-it
The lakehouse is haunted.
this fic took me forever to write and it's the longest single fic i've ever written! i poured my heart & soul into this and i hope you can tell. i made dean asexual in it and through writing him tackling that i learned some new things about myself, too. thank you all so much for giving me a space to project my sexuality onto my favorite character and giving love to this fic <3
in tight places
45k (it's 2 fics, 20k+25k), t, emmanatural, deancas, AU set during s8
Claire Novak escapes from her first foster house, determined to find Castiel and demand he return her father. But when she encounters the Impala in a hospital parking lot, it’s not Sam and Dean she finds inside. Dean Winchester and Castiel are missing, and Emma Winchester is determined to track them down. It only makes sense that Claire goes with her. Of course, they’ll find Dean and Cas right away, and certainly won’t be driving for months on end, with only each other and the road for company. Right?
these fics are the most self-indulgent thing i've ever written, i think. it was really fun to explore claire and then emma's povs in this AU space and i had a lot of fun going over what could happen if emma survived slice girls, how that would affect canon. i remember i thought of this au and typed it onto a post, like "au where claire decides to go looking for cas but instead finds emma, who has survived slice girls and is looking for her dad while he's in purgatory, and they roadtrip together" and then i looked at that typed up post and instead of hitting the post button i quietly deleted it because i knew i actually wanted to save that idea for a fic. and then somehow i got 45k out of it!

supernatural s14e2 gods and monsters (w. brad buckner, eugenie ross-leming)
updated my post on 14x01 with my kind of derpy revelation:
!! omg lol i just reread my 13x23 with my whole “can’t kill michael now that he’s wearing dean” is that the whole reason we get pellegrino back as nick, so we can find out that archangel blades don’t kill the vessel?? 😂
the very fancy apron and a knife that reminded me of the linoleum knife in hannibal mizumono for a hot second 🥴 (his is a karambit, i think) he looks good, again. and without the flat cap he doesn't look so much like he's cosplaying the 20s.
CAS And, you need me to stay here and babysit Nick and Jack. SAM It’s not babysitting, Cas. CAS Only in the sense that they’re not infants, but they both have to be supervised. Jack is lost without his grace, Nick is…he’s just a mess. SAM Well, it-it’s not his fault. Cas, Nick was housing, you know. He-he deserves a shot at rebuilding his life. CAS And yet every time I look at him, all I can see is the supreme agent of evil.
sam thinkin (what with the presumed cage torture while wearing that face) if i can do it, you can give it the old college try too
NICK I just don’t know what kind of pain would make me allow Lucifer to possess me.
it's like therapy for cas too. but this is the part where you tell him how luci exploited your desire to fix the problem of amara (??) at any risk or whatever and let him possess you too
Tumblr media
BOBBY I’ve been fighting a friggin’ apocalypse for 15 years, my, FBI might be a little rusty.
cute. i never quite connected with bobby but it is kind of nice to have jim beaver around (even if i think the whole reunion tour of the past couple seasons is kind of ridiculous). and appreciate the confirmation of the timeline, 15 years is a lot but also not a lot. did mary get the ice caps are melting speech too because she probably needed it more than those guys -_-
can i also take a moment to say how the longer it goes on, the more goofy castiel wearing an outdoor coat indoors at all times is to me? lol. and i've heard actors talk about how it can be tiring to always be in the same costume. years and years of a trench coat...
Tumblr media
CAS Yes, I do - a little. At the time of the Great Fall, when angels were banished from heaven, I lost what I thought was everything. I had no grace, I had no wings. I felt hopeless and useless. JACK What did you have left? CAS Well, uh..well, I had Sam and Dean. But I had something else that was extremely helpful. I had myself. Just the basic me, as, uh…as Dean would say, without all the bells and whistles. You know, Sam and Dean, they weren’t born with their expertise. They’ve been at it since they were children. Failing, winning, developing over the years. Patience, persistence - those are skills too. The past, where you come from, that’s important, but it is not as important as the future and where you’re going.
cas is on a roll. therapize it up, my guy! and i kind of like this pointing out how sam and dean got to where they are
Tumblr media
oh so now dean gets to have a moment in the mirror with michael like sam did with lucifer in 5x22 (glad it didn't last long)
DEAN (in mirror) GET…OUT. MICHAEL I don’t think so. DEAN You can’t. MICHAEL Oh, but I can. Because, see… I own you. So hang on, and enjoy the ride.
i guess archangels don't have to follow the rules of possession. i'm not sure it's even a rule? who knows. but i know at least specifically with gadreel there was the whole, if sam knows about him, he can eject him. oh right, no one could dump lucifer either, duh. lol
Tumblr media
well that was genuinely startling and creepy, nick trying to snap castiel out of existence
Tumblr media
those are some truly unfortunate monster teeth
NICK Castiel, you’re just a stone cold body snatcher. You’re no different than Lucifer.
again singing the praises of mark pellegrino, he totally sells this. bringing some of the creeping dread of lucifer into this character too
CAS You know, in all my thousands of years, what happened to Jimmy Novak and his family are my greatest regret.
i recall when they finally decided to have some moral quandary over the jimmy novak situation, it felt too little too late to me. and for a second i was like right, jimmy dead. jimmy's wife dead. what about claire... oh right! we know what claire (and her glorious hair) are up to, and not dead
MICHAEL I admire you. Eating on the run, surviving, despite being stalked by those venal humans, who think of you as nothing but vermin.
this is the most ridiculous explanation. just say you hate humans, lucifer 2.0
similar to how they finally addressed the trauma of cas taking jimmy away from his family in whatever, s10, jack visiting kelly's parents and addressing how she just disappeared and they don't even know she's dead (which is just heartbreaking as a parent, to consider.) the show, past the first couple seasons, rarely takes the time to follow that thread through. this was well done but it's hard for me not to see it as a play for emotion and give jack something human connection-y to do
two things. 1) there's a little hint of the like. cliche film noir jazzy saxophone or whatever in the score when michael is standing up saying the "why do you think i let you escape" line and i find it just. well. it's something. what era are we going for here exactly. i mean, matches her apartment vibe too but not with michael in his 20s-ish getup :p b) i'm glad jackles is laying off the funky speech cadence he had for michael in 14x01, it's a little different in spots but not So Much
(this is a christopher lennertz and philip white for music episode)
Tumblr media
laughing at this framing. let us gaze upon the defunct telescope while they sit on the edges of the weird step things
JACK Cas, Michael has to be stopped. CAS I know, and he will be - after Dean is- JACK No, Dean doesn’t matter. You’re all so focused on trying to save Dean and I get it, I understand, but - if he can’t be saved, if it comes down to him or Michael - Michael has to be stopped. Caged, or killed- CAS And if that means that Dean dies too? JACK Then Dean dies. I know this Michael. I’ve seen what he’s done to an entire world, and so have you. If stopping that from happening here means that Dean has to die, then …. Do you think he’d want it any other way?
LOL what! wow. jack doesn't subscribe to the winchester let the world burn if it means i get to save my brother worldview. which, very reasonable. but i'm not sure why jack of all people is bringing this up to cas right now. sounds more like... something bobby should be saying? not like jack knows them all that much better than au bobby does
even if i think this nick plotline is unnecessary and silly, pellegrino is killin it. he's so good at being creepy!
Tumblr media
objectively very pretty shot but i still laughed
do they have any sort of angel detection system? dial a friend (angel) to take a look at him?
nick going full darkside and bashing the neighbor's skull in was a choice.
trying to sum up my viewing experience of the later seasons, i'm gonna borrow from our friend will graham: "You delight. I tolerate." i'm trying not to be an asshole and complain all the time, i want to enjoy it when i can. but i find it pretty challenging.

"So, both girls should be in bed by eight. Joanna might fight you to go to bed, but if she has a bedtime story, then she will fall asleep pretty easily as long as it's entertaining. Maryann is only two months old, so she will be needing naps throughout the day. If she wants to sleep, then let her.
"Joanna is at that age where she loves playing with anything she can get her hands on, so please keep the loose items to a minimum." You hand Garth your baby bag with everything he will need. "I have enough formula in here to last Maryann until we pick them up. There are also snacks in here for Joanna."
"Don't worry," Garth says with a smile. "I will take good care of them. I will have a tea party with Joanna all day if I have to."
"Thank you," you chuckle. "This is the first time I'm leaving them alone with a babysitter."
"Your girls are in good hands." Garth slings the baby bag over his shoulder and pauses. "Look, I'm sorry about Rob--"
"I will call you when we are on our way to pick them up," you cut Garth off, not wanting to relive the worst thing to ever happen to you. "We shouldn't take too long. Thank you for doing this."
Garth nods, understanding that you don't want to talk about this.
"Take your time."
Both girls are sleeping in Garth's car, so you and Dean kiss their heads before leaving them in Garth's care. You don't want to take them on this hunt knowing what happened last time with Artemis and Zeus. If you're going to keep them safe, you have to look at safer options for them.
There is a city with vampire problems, so that's where you're heading next. The sheriff has been expecting you since Sam called it in, so when you finally get there, the sheriff is waiting for you in the lobby. Instead of going in right away, you stay in the car a little bit to talk about what you might be walking into.
"So, what are we looking at again?" Dean hands Sam the newspaper that caught his attention. "Two young women found near the freeway with their throats ripped out."
"Sounds vampy to me," you shrug.
"Listen, if you want to take a knee on this one if you're not feeling up to it, I wouldn't blame you."
"What?"
"You know, with the trials and what Cas said that you got what he can't cure?"
"Which means what, exactly?"
"I don't know. You tell me. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Are you okay?"
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" Sam raises his eyebrows and Dean rolls his eyes. "Are you talking about my feelings?"
"If that's what you want to talk about, then sure."
"Okay. I'll tell you what. Why don't I go get some herbal tea, and you can find some Cowboy Junkies on the dial," Dean says sarcastically.
"Eat me, Dean."
"No, only Y/N gets to say that."
"Dean," you say, your eyes going wide. Sam rolls his eyes and gets out of the car, already done with his brother. You and Dean get out, following closely behind Sam. "You can't just say that."
"What, you're my favorite meal," he smirks.
You shake your head and enter the police station where Sheriff Oscar Mann is waiting for you.
"Glad you guys could come."
"What can you tell us?"
Oscar leads you three to the back of the police station as he explains what's going on here.
"Well, both victims were female, under twenty-one, and they were drained of all their blood. We found that strange, but then last night, things got even stranger."
"Last night? What happened?"
Oscar approaches a computer and brings up surveillance footage of last night's attack.
"We set up a security camera on Fuller's Point for safety purposes. It's where our local young people like to go make out. Last night, things got crazy."
Oscar presses play, and you watch what happened. There is someone on their knees begging not to be killed. Three young people come into frame, but when you see just who it is, your eyes widen. On screen is Krissy, the young girl you had to work with because her dad was captured by Vetalas. Sam doesn't seem to recognize her, but Dean does, and you make eye contact with him to show him you know who this is.
Krissy and her friends kill the vampire by slicing his head off.
"Hell of a thing, ain't it?" the sheriff says.
"Have you ID'd any of these people?"
"Well, not yet. The crime scene was empty when we got there. I'm thinking it's some kind of cult or a drug thing, so I put a statewide APB out on these three about an hour ago."
"I'm gonna need you to call that off, and we're gonna need this footage," Dean says.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard him," you back up your husband. "You just crossed streams with a federal investigation. Now, I suggest you cooperate, call off your APB, or you're not going to like us for much longer."
"Okay, no problem," the sheriff says.
He's confused, but he doesn't want to get in your way of doing your job. Sam is confused as to why you're like this, but as soon as the sheriff calls off the search, you grab the footage that's on some USB before leaving the station.
"What the hell was that?"
"One of the girls in the video is Krissy Chambers. Do you remember her?"
"Yeah, the Vetala case, right? They were working that truck stop by the freeway. She and her dad helped us shut them down."
"Well she's hunting, and I don't see her dad in the video. Either he doesn't know about it, or he's not in the picture anymore."
"Is that what kids are doing for kicks these days?" Dean scoffs.
"Maybe he's helping her out," Sam says.
"You really think he'd let her get caught on camera? Let's just find her before she gets into more trouble."
There aren't a lot of places three teenagers can stay in, so you checked all the shady motels around town. Only the sketchy ones will let teenagers rent rooms from them even though it's illegal to do so.
The last one you visit must be the right one because as soon as you see the front desk clerk, he pales.
"We're looking for three teenagers. Did you sell them a room here?" you ask.
"No, that would be illegal."
"You're right, it would be, but you did it anyway." You show him your badge, and he visibly gulps. "Tell me what room they're in, and I'll let this slide this one time."
"Room 201," he sighs.
"Good. Thank you."
Sam picks the lock before you have a chance to break it open with your magic. There can be anything behind this door, so you have to prepare yourself for anything. You walk in first with Sam and Dean behind you. Everything is quiet, there are computers set up for surveillance, and there are open snack wrappers.
Before you have a chance to explore further, you hear a gun click from the right of you, and you look to see Krissy there with a gun pointed at you.
"Hey, Krissy," Dean says without looking at her.
"What are you three doing here?"
"Saving your ass," you say.
"Does it look like my ass needs saving? Wait. How'd you find me? I paid cash everywhere."
"Yeah, well, shady motels means giving underaged people rooms. Plus, it helps when you have magical powers," you smirk.
"Krissy, where's your dad?" Sam asks.
"Dead. Well, let's do this again, like, never. Now go. We got this."
"We who? What do you got?"
Krissy lowers her gun and walks over to one of the open laptops. On screen are two of Krissy's friends walking into a room where a woman is tied to the bed. She is moaning in pain, but she doesn't seem concerned with hurting the kids who walked in on her.
"She's a vampire."
"We're in. The room's clear. Nobody here but a vic," one of Krissy's friends says.
"That's Josephine. With her is Aiden."
"Where are they?" you demand, not leaving any room for question.
Once Krissy gives up the room they're in, you three book it out of the room to save her friends' asses. Suddenly, there is a loud noise that comes from the room. Aiden turns around and sees a vampire slam the door to the room. He hisses and tosses Jospehine to the wall. You slam the door open with your magic just in time to see the vampire jump through the window.
You run over to the window, ignoring the woman on the bed and Krissy's friends. You're on the second story, but that doesn't seem to matter to the vampire. The vampire is running across the street towards a blue van.
"I got him!" Krissy yells.
She runs out of the motel room, and you curse at her eagerness. Sam stays with the two friends while you and Dean run after Krissy. She is going to get herself killed if she continues down this path like this.
By the time you get out there, the vampire is begging for his life. Krissy takes out what looks like a dart gun and shoots the vampire in the leg. He falls to the ground and turns over to face Krissy who is pissed. You pant when you get to her side, but she makes no move to look at you.
"Don't shoot me! Please, don't! It hurts so bad!"
"How did you drop him so quickly?" Dean asks.
"Darts filled with dead man's blood."
"Where's the blue van?" you ask, not seeing it on the street.
"What blue van?"
"Nevermind."
Dean takes out a knife to kill the vampire with, but Krissy is quick to stop him.
"Wait, stop! This is not your kill."
"What are you talking about?"
Josephine, Aiden, and Sam come running out to the street to face the vampire they've been hunting.
"Three months ago, this blood banger snuck into a house and killed three people in their sleep," Josephine pants to catch her breath.
"What?! No! I didn't do that!" the vampire pleads.
"One was a woman who never hurt anyone! The other two, a brother and a sister. I came home from a friend's house, and I found them. They were my family!"
"This isn't happening. I didn't do anything, I swear. Please, help me!" the vampire begs you and the brothers.
Josephine ignores the vampire and takes her own machete out. Despite the vampire's claims that he didn't do this, she slices his head clean off. Dean looks around to see if anyone saw, Sam just looks pissed, and you're disappointed at her.
"Can we talk to you, please?" you ask the young woman.
"Do you know these people?" Aiden asks protectively.
"Calm down, Romeo," you roll your eyes.
"We have a past."
Krissy comforts Josephine before complying. You and Dean take her off to the side while Sam stays with the other two.
"You're gonna have to catch us up. What happened here? Did your dad even try to stay away from this life?"
"He did. For a while, it was amazing. We had dinner every night at a table. We watched TV, went on walks, and even went to the mall. Then, the past came a-knockin'. I woke up one morning and found him dead with his throat ripped out."
"I'm sorry," you sigh.
"Me too. If it weren't for Josephine and Aiden, I don't know how I would have made it."
"So, they both lost their families, as well?"
"Yeah, by the same vampires whose nest we're hunting."
"I understand your pain, I really do, but you are way too young to be doing this."
"How old were you when you first started? You're never too young to kill monsters, especially the ones that kill your family," she says angrily.
"You're missing the point, here. Hunting isn't about revenge. Did we talk about this last time?" you sigh. "Do you have any family around here?"
"An aunt in Cincinnati. Why?"
"You're packing a bag, and we're taking you there," Dean determines.
"I think Victor's gonna have a problem with that."
"Who the hell is Victor?"
"He took us in and showed us everything we know."
"What, like a school for hunters?" Dean chuckles.
You don't know why, but that sticks to you more than you care to admit.
"Don't be such a dweeb, okay? We're not the X-Men. Victor's helping us get revenge," Krissy chuckles.
"Yeah, well, I don't care what he is. He sucks because you and your little crew here got caught, and if it wasn't for us, your faces would be splattered all over the news."
"Maybe it's time that people know the truth about what's really going bump in the night."
"Yeah, because that's smart. Let's just cause international panic. That's a great plan," you scoff.
"Look, I don't need you to save me. I'm not a little kid anymore."
Krissy walks away, clearly done with the conversation. She's only going to learn when this whole thing bites her in the ass later. Krissy joins her friends in bagging up the body when Sam joins you and Dean.
"What happened?"
"She's hell bent on revenge, that's what happened. I swear to God, if Joanna and Maryann end up like that, I'm taking them out of the world."
"I'm with you on that one," Dean agrees.
"Did she tell you about Victor?"
"What the hell are we supposed to do with that? These kids are driven by revenge and rage. They are going to get themselves or someone else killed. The only way they're going to learn is the hard way, and we need to be here to clean up their messes."
"Does this mean we're talking to Victor?"
"Looks like it."
Krissy knows you're not leaving until you talk to Victor, so she and her friends lead you to where they are staying. It's actually a very nice house that looks big enough for three families to live in. This is too nice to be a headquarters for hunters.
"This is not what I'd call a compound," Dean mutters.
