'Desert hermit Ben Kenobi develops a reputation as a crazy wizard because he keeps talking to thin air.'
No. This is Tatooine, talking to yourself is hardly the weirdest thing they've seen. Ben Kenobi, however, keeps having full on fucking screaming rows with thin air and seemingly gets replies back, which is decidedly a step up.
(They've managed to piece together that a major point of contention is the acquisition and raising of a child? Clearly Ben is a wizard that had a bitter divorce with a desert spirit and is working through a custody dispute)

Part 1
Part 2

“We’re losing him!”
“Hold on, Obi-Wan. It’s not your time yet.”
“The infection is eating through the thyroid.”
“Stabilize him!”
“It’ll be alright, little one, don’t cry. Just squeeze my hand.”
“It’s attacking the mandible and sternum. Move, move!”
“It’s going to be alright.”
“Save what you can!”
“Hold on, Obi-Wan. Listen to the Force.”
The tears on Master Qui-Gon’s face looked strange. He had seen him cry before but never over him. It hurt to move his mouth, hurt even more to speak. Hurt— hurt a lot to speak. He wasn’t sure he was actually saying anything. But he tried because Master Qui-Gon looked devastated and Obi-Wan already had broken his heart by choosing to become a Shadow as soon as his return to the Temple was permanent. “The Force is with—“
Obi-Wan opens his eyes. Makes sure the mask is in place.
The rain still hasn’t ceased its steady downpour. He pulls Mace’s robe tight around himself. His own robe, seldom as he uses it, might have been lost on the battlefield where he had dropped it, but semantics. Mace’s spare robe squelches.
Obi-Wan will never be dry again.
Wings snap back into armored plates as the hyperjets power down, and Obi-Wan takes a bit of pleasure watching Cody land silently despite the mass of the clone armor.
“The siege is going well,” Cody says, tapping one of multiple antenna links on his helmet. Obi-Wan smiles under the mask. Quin and Bant have accused him many a times of having weird preferences, but the professionalism and calm control Cody so casually exudes is very, very attractive. The news makes him even more attractive. “Shouldn’t take longer than three months,” Cody continues, optimism apparent even with the vocoder.
Any kind of attraction spurning on Obi-Wan’s wet, frozen body drowns in the rain rather pityfully. “Three months,” he repeats in tap code where he’s gripping the robe.
The helmet turns to him fully. “Yes. It’s going really well.”
Obi-Wan strengthens his resolve to leech off any warmth Cody possesses when they crawl into bed after their shift.
.
“You can’t ever steal my voice,” Cody repeats in a murmur, fingertip stroking over the words on Obi-Wan’s forearm. He looks up to find blue eyes watching him over the mask. “Is that your sense of humor or your defiance speaking?”
The hand where he started tracing the letters moves back and forth, undecided. A little bit of both, then, Cody guesses.
The hand is retracted, flows so naturally into sign language. “Many tried.”
“Tried to steal your voice?” At Obi-Wan’s nod, Cody shuffles up the bed, re-categorizing the scars he’s seen. “No one was ever successful, I’m guessing.”
“Many broken bones on both sides,” is signed with a careless shrug before Obi-Wan turns serious, determination and the even more familiar defiance spinning Cody close. “I will only ever be silent of my own choosing.”

Lingering Pain
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whoever decided to have Obi-Wan's hair fall out of place to symbolize when he himself is falling apart is genius.
When he's fighting Maul, he doesn't want to defeat him, he wants to kill him. He's so angry, flashes of Qui-Gon lying lifeless on the floor go through his head and suddenly he's 25 again losing the only father he'd ever known. Suddenly, he's channeling all the rage of his youth and it consumes him because this isn't Maul versus Obi-Wan now, this is Maul versus a young man who'd never known loss like this.
Now notice all the lightsaber marks, and notice how they all come from Obi-Wan. Maul doesn't slash the wall. Maul has the advantage, he's calm, collected and he knew exactly what to say that would rile Obi-Wan, and it worked. All that trauma Obi-Wan went through with Qui-Gon's death, there wasn't a Jedi that could help him in the way he needed. So he buried all of it, but then Maul came back from the dead, and so did all that pain.
Maul still being alive isn't fair. It isn't fair that he got cut in half and was able to live when Qui-Gon didn't survive. Obi-Wan finds himself so angry because how does a creature so evil get to live and his master didn't? You see can it in his rage, it isn't fair, you can see the mournful root of his anger, it isn't fair, you can see it with each careless, striken blow, It isn't fair.

Aayla and Anakin are the siblings beating the shit outta each other in the background of all of Obi-Wan and Quinlan’s holocalls and family pictures they are required to take whenever they’re all in temple to document their babies growing up. Ahsoka and Rex are the siblings committing WWE moves on each other but also if one of them actually gets hurt they either spoil the other, or bribe them not to tell Skywalker.

I suddenly had thoughts about Luke.
Owen and Beru were in contact with Obi-Wan, but didn't let him near Luke, at least not for the first ten years of Luke's life.
But also they're raising a baby Force Sensitive. Luke has an extra sense that they don't have a grasp of and they're looking for it.
So Beru comes to Obi-Wan one day. She says Luke is antsy and distractable. He has a hard time focusing.
And Obi-Wan wonders if that's Force senstivity or if it's just an active mind, but he teaches Beru moving meditation. Both Force Sensitives and non-Force sensitives can do it.
She goes back and has Luke bake bread with her to help him focus.
And Owen comes one day and says that Luke is overly sensitive. Sometimes he gets picked on and he has a hard time holding in his anger.
And Obi-Wan tries not to think of Anakin, but of course he does. And it may be a normal child having struggles regulating emotions, or it might be Luke picking up on the heightened emotions of the other children and an echo chamber moving through him.
So he teaches Owen to have Luke sit with him. Tells Owen to focus on his love for Luke and calmly talk Luke through what he's feeling. Naming emotions working through them, learning to identify what he's feeling and what he's reacting to. Because that can help force sensitives and non-force sensitives.
And Beru comes later and says that Luke gets bouts of anxiety. And Obi-Wan says that their bread making might help, or trying to get him to focus on the here and now. The present moment. And if that doesn't work have him do exersizes and he thinks about how Master Qui-Gon had him run laps to clear his head and he always felt better after running. It could be Luke having spikes of foresight, or it could just be the boy has natural anxiety.
And when Owen comes to him in the middle of the night about bad dreams, dreams that could be visions, Obi-Wan tells Owen that the future is always in motion, sometimes dreams are dreams, but to write them down just in case, and to hold Luke and reassure him.
And Owen sees how Obi-Wan was probably raised and feels pity for him. Owen didn't understand that the Jedi were family, but he sees it now. This was how Anakin was raised, and maybe his childhood wasn't as cold and loveless as he imagined. He doesn't tell Obi-Wan that.
And when Luke finally meets Old Ben Kenobi and Obi-Wan walks him through how to use the Force, it comes naturally. Not because he's super powerful (although he his), but because his parents prepared him, and helped him learn how to process the extra sense that he had grown up with even if he didn't know that.

Headcanon that Obi-Wan thinks Cody always gets a lot to eat because he is a clone with a more active metabolism, but really, Cody knows feeding Obi-Wan little portions of his own food is the only way to get him to sit down and eat something other than half a ration bar.

Vader: Obi-Wan lied to you. I didn't kill your father. I am your father.
Force ghost Obi-Wan, standing next to him: Oh, so now you are alive! When you tell me that you are what killed Anakin, it's fine. But when I tell Luke that, you are throwing a tantrum. Unbelievable! Absolutely unbelievable!
