what to do with spam comments on AO3

First, let's identify the comment as spam. Some things to look for:

The comment is left by a guest user. You can tell they are a guest because the username isn't a link. In most site skins, links are indicated by text that is underlined.

The comment is trying to get you to do something - visit a webpage, sign up for a service, join a discord server.

The comment doesn't make any sense for the work that it's on.

Here's a comment I've received. The username is a keysmash and I can tell they're a guest because the name doesn't link back to an AO3 user profile page. The comment is formatted more like an email, and it asks me to join a discord server. Also, the comment references that I'm writing for Marvel and while this is true, it's specifically Agents of SHIELD and not a crossover with other Marvel franchises so from the first sentence, I was already suspicious.

If you receive a spam comment like this one, all you need to do is hit the button marked Spam. This button appears in your fic comments, but you won't see it in your AO3 inbox. If you're in your inbox, you can go directly to the comment on your fic by clicking on the fic title (see below).

Selecting the Spam button reports the comment as spam to AO3's spam detection system and removes the comment from your work. It also teaches that system that comments like this one are spam and should not be posted on works.

You can also simply delete the comment, if you prefer. These comments aren't anything that you need to worry about, although I advise you not to actually follow any links or visit any sites that they might direct you to.

There is no need to write in to Support or the Policy & Abuse team, either. They are aware that spam bots exist, and they do what they can to train the system to spot them.

You can avoid receiving spam guest comments by editing the Privacy settings on your works to only allow comments from registered users. That means only people who are logged into their AO3 account will be able to comment.

A) keep the eyes in my art style (no colours, just the highlight), bc ngl it makes him seem more babey (pic 1),,, or

B) add the mako-glow to the eyes so i could be lore-accurate.... also I spent a lot of time!! on colouring in those pixels!!!!! dammit!!!!!!!!! (pic 2) and

Took my laptop apart at to clean it (at 3:30am as you do) and took some time to poke around and look at the internals.

This ram is so ancient that it out to be in a museum. It seems like 1333mhz ddr3 was quite reasonable at the time, especially in a laptop. But nowadays I'm pretty sure my phone is generations more powerful. Kind of insane how computing power has rocketed forward in just a decade or so. I've never even heard of super talent before lol. They seem to be a bargain computer hardware company of sorts.

Honestly kind of a miracle that the laptop still works. It got used and abused as a main work station and routinely ran in the ~90'C range with many blue screens over the year due to over heating or corrupted memory. Now that I think about it I had an issue once where the ram was corrupted but reseating them and running memtest brought them back to life. It was strange, but you take the rare Ws that don't involve individually testing every stick of ram in every ram slot only to find out your mobo is broken.

I don't know how many of you guys know Yahtzee and his Judging by The Cover series but there is something bothering me about Baldur's Gate 3's cover and I will talk about it.

Short version is: This game deserves a much better cover art.

Because this is the most lazy way to create a poster for a game. This collage way of making covers is a plague on creative industry ever since the prequels came out, and I am saying this as a Star Wars nerd. I hate it. It's unimaginative, repetitive and lazy. It just throws the characters onto the screen in a soup of whatever. That should not be how a poster or a cover art look like.

Just look at all these star wars posters:

They tell nothing about what the story is. If we didn't know these characters already no one knows what the fuck is going on - it is just chaos. It gets worse as the movies go on. I am not even gonna talk about the sequels.

But back to Baldur's Gate, you can now see how similar its cover is to the collage formula Star Wars and many other movies use so much.

Now I want to put a cover here, which in my opinion, explains the plot and vibe of the overall game in a more subtle and elegant way:

I love love love this cover. The dragon in the negative space, the pose of the main character with their hand up in the air (for those that don't know, MC has a magic hand in the game which is vital to the plot), the clash point of white and black representing the Breach (basically the big bad of the game) and the negative space being filled with demons which escape and bleed into Thedas (the name of the world in Dragon Age) through the Breach caused rifts.

So far I talked about the rectangular cover, but in the wide cover I shared up there also includes the companions you collect through the game. Overall, it explains the game so perfectly, nods to so many of the things you come across through the game. After you play the game and come back to look at the cover you see how many little details are in it. And it just makes you want to look at it, look at it for a lot longer than you would in a soup of characters. This cover tells us a story.

Dragon Age: Inquisiton is similar to Baldur's Gate in many ways, in my opinion. I love both of them. And Baldur's Gate deserves a cover as clever and as beautiful as DA:I has here. And I think the way for them to do it now is make a competition for it and ask the fans to submit their cover arts.

I can go on and on about this, adding more example covers but I think I've made my point. A game as fantastic as Baldur's Gate deserves just as amazing and unforgettable cover art for itself.
