I'm just gonna do this to Ruin
LIKE. YES I KNOW HE DID EVERYTHING WRONG. BUT HAVE YOU CONSIDERED HOW SAD HE MIGHT BE ABOUT IT
Like aaaaa I'm cursed to only like characters when they're losing I guess, and a Pyrrhic victory counts as a loss. I didn't CARE about this guy when he was the main antagonist, and then Eclipse 3.0 chucked him in the back of a car and kidnapped him and I was suddenly interested. And NOW, when everyone is very much upset about Solar, I'm off to the side shaking this bastard around because we finally got some concrete answers to what's going on in his head.
Just! This whole thing-- this is an exceptionally Moon thing for him to have done. To go 'I'm going to completely and totally remove this possible threat from ever occurring, and I'm fine with being the bad guy to do it'? That's some Old Moon kind of thinking. This wasn't a plan he came up with in the past few months, this took him years.
And speaking of years! Fifty years of playing pretend! Of acting like you enjoy hurting people, that you don't care as your body literally falls apart around you. I'm not a fan of the idea that he was never infected, I like the perspective better that he was infected, it just wasn't as responsible for his behavior as he made it out to be-- but still. At some point he had to have gone numb to it for the sake of his own survival.
What does that do to your mentality? Your outlook? What's it like knowing that your whole world was brought to its knees by your creator? What's it like being the only semi-stable person you know for half a century? What's it like realizing that you're also changing, and not for the better?
He's just... so painfully isolated, in a way that Eclipse doesn't even come close to touching.
And! And even after being 'cured'! He's still isolated! Like it was a good thing he WAS up to something-- can you imagine how crushing it would be if he'd been genuinely not doing anything, and he was still treated with suspicion for a solid like 4 months? By probably the most consistent group of animatronics he's had to talk to that weren't infected with a weird virus?
Like, the man didn't get repaired until 3 months after being cured, after Solar made a blueprint in his spare time. He didn't get a bed until Moon felt guilty about rummaging around inside his head-- and tbh I don't know if he ever got to actually use that bed. He let them call him Ruin.
Ruin never had a home in 'our' dimension.
And hhhhngh like I'm not even sure he cares, because he's past the point of caring. He's got one of Sun's worst traits as well, "There's no point in sharing what I'm thinking because no one is listening". He could have approached Moon and Solar with like "Hey okay so I started on this plan to do this thing like 10 years ago, I would like some input" and maybe an alternative could have been found!
But he didn't, because he's alone. He came up with the best plan he could, weighed the risks, and acted on it, all by himself. A single weird Eclipse against 5,000 Creators, because he felt like that was the greatest threat.
And like, lets be real-- Solar's death was 100% a narrative necessity. Otherwise we the audience wouldn't really care that Ruin had wiped so many dimensions from existing, it'd just be a number. That thing of like, you gotta make it personal to have impact. Very good storytelling right there.
(Though from a in-universe perspective, man it must have been an unpleasant shock to learn that of course the only other dimensional refugee was from one of the worlds you had to destroy. Like, come on, what are the odds)
He did something horrible. A multi-dimensional catastrophe to prevent a multi-dimensional catastrophe. He probably accepted the ramifications of it ages ago. He just... utterly lacks any hope, you know? No hope of forgiveness, no hope of improvement. He survived his world long enough to do this thing, and he has nothing else going for him.
He's just waiting for them to finally kill off his body, because he already died years ago.
Anyway I'm desperately trying to find an angle that can be used to maybe pull him out of his coffin here and so far I'm not seeing one qq but maybe future eps will give me something to work off of.

Not in the Job Description
heres a silly lil Danny Phantom concept based entirely off a half-awake sleep-vision that made me laugh :) my subconscious brain is a genius at coming up with things that make just enough sense to be worth writing
summary: Danny's job at a local restaurant is surprisingly fulfilling, even after being crowned Ghost King. Speaking of that job, however, there are some intricacies to it that are hard to keep in mind during everyday life.
warnings: descriptions of nausea and mild sickness
words: 2180

===
Honestly, life was going pretty well at the moment for Danny Fenton. He wasn't even worried that it was a false security or a calm before a storm, because this kind of semi-serenity had been going on for more than a year. It was a long-term stability brought about by adaptation and putting in effort to get help and accommodation. Jazz would be proud!
Sometime at the beginning of Junior year, the Observants had chased him down and crowned him High Ghost King (much to the chagrin of both involved parties). It certainly added responsibility to Danny's plate, along with some new sensations and a series of crises (what didn't these days?), but a little political discussion with some of the more powerful ghosts ended with Danny deciding that, at least at the moment, the position didn't require him to do much more than he normally did. More ghosts would seek him out for help and he would do his best, and some "paperwork" (though there was very little paper involved and it was a lot of talking and oaths and rituals and such) happened about monthly. Otherwise, though, the Zone didn't need much more help than that, having survived off an absent King for centuries. Well, and the ambient purpose of the King as a sort of core for the Zone, but Danny didn't have to put in time or conscious effort for that.
Eventually that settled into normalcy, and Danny was back to worrying about the balance of schoolwork, self-care, and fighting. He still hadn't given up on the prospect of someday becoming an astronaut, and he was determined to have the grades for it. Don't get him wrong, he'd gotten way better about that! He'd formed a practiced, if not entirely stable, system that kept his grades at a solid B- / C+, while getting a solid 5-ish hours of sleep most nights and not bottling things up too much. It was about halfway through Junior year that he realized, with some help from his friends, that his ghosts fights were honestly pretty civil, at least against the regulars. Civil enough that he knew they had some respect for him, and was willing to risk asking for help. So a few weeks and awkward but not bad conversations later, and he had agreements with almost all his regular "foes" not to cause trouble within Amity from 11pm to 7am, 3pm on weekdays. It was more than half the day off-limits on school days, and plenty of ghosts made up for it to a degree by making themselves more common during the "permitted" hours, but it greatly increased Danny's well-being and school performance anyway. "Rivals" like Skulker and Technus had enough respect for Danny and his Lair to abide, and plenty even cared that he was taking care of himself, even between frequent sparring. Maybe a few were really just in fear of his new crown, but he chose to cautiously pretend that wasn't a possibility.
After graduation — he made Senior year with all As and Bs! — Danny's parents had encouraged him to get a part-time job over the summer. He had been interning at FentonWorks (paid! His parents might not be the most attentive but they certainly weren't unfair) since he had accidentally revealed himself a few years back, and they had been thrilled to hear that he still intended to go into NASA if possible, and had done whatever they could to help. They recommended the job because, as good as a paid scientific internship was on a resume, it would help to have a variety of activity and the opportunity to get recommendations from employers who weren't liable to nepotism. After searching local businesses, Danny found a small sandwich shop founded by a middle-aged couple who had moved in and set up shop just before the ghost attacks began. Being close to the school but not far from the commercial sector and offering small portable food (no one wants to sit down for a meal when a spirit could come crashing through the window at any moment), the place got good enough business to pay the employees a proper living wage. Better yet, they were allowed to take home unsold food! Not to mention the owners were both very kind women who held smiling conversation with employees and customers alike. Danny was more than lucky to land such a nice job, even if it meant he had to get up at 7 five days a week.
All this is to say that it wasn't as surprising as it could have been that he was having a slow and pleasant day at work.
Both the owners were out for the day on some sort of vacation, so today it was just Danny and a short teenager named Casey manning the place. Most of their orders recently had been online due to an explosion causing road work near the restaurant and it was mid-morning, leaving work slow enough that they could afford to just have the two until lunch shift started. Danny was on cashier duty today, but unless the door bell sounded, he was helping Casey in the kitchen.
"Aw, man, we're almost out of tomatoes."
"Really?" Casey looked up to the shelf Danny was inspecting and indeed saw only 3 tomatoes. "Huh, guess they didn't restock yesterday. Well, we probably shouldn't risk needing more before the day's out, do you want me to go get more?"
Danny shook his head. "Nah, I can go. I think I could use the fresh air." He said that a lot, especially as an excuse when his ghost sense went off, but that didn't mean it wasn't true. He never had liked being confined.
Casey checked the monitor to see if they'd gotten any new online orders. Since there was a grocery store just a block away, any time someone needed a quick restock they tended to just walk.
They looked up to see Danny already had his jacket on and was looking them in the eye. "Would you take over my position until I come back?"
"Of course. Ten minutes?"
With a nod and a smile, Danny was out the back door.
===
After a moment of habitually wiping down the counters, Casey went up to the register in case a customer appeared.
It was even quieter than before for a few minutes, so they busied themself with mini restocks and organization. They were in the middle of stacking some paper coffee cups when they started to feel dizzy. There had been this subtle pressure on their chest since Danny left, which they figured was anxiety for working the restaurant alone for the first time, and now it had solidified into a warm nausea that flared whenever they exhaled.
With the disinterested panic that came from having strange things happen for years, they wondered if they had missed their medication this morning. A quick glance at their phone, however, showed the notification for it checked off.
Putting the phone back away, Casey noticed the tips of their fingers were somewhat translucent. Alright then, it was definitely something to do with ghosts. Great! Just excellent. The panic was less disinterested this time.
They weren't familiar with any sort of ghost illness that made humans translucent, so they definitely needed to call someone to make sure nothing bad happened. It would be best to call the Fentons' public number so they could go over and get looked over by then. In the meantime, they should call Danny and ask him to hurry back. He shouldn't be much longer anyway.
Casey didn't even get the chance to act on their plan, however, before a short humanoid ghost appeared in the dining area. They didn't look to be up to anything, but Casey reached for the emergency ectoblaster beneath the register anyway. The nausea was getting worse, along with a new chill, and they couldn't be sure this new ghost wasn't somehow causing whatever they were going through.
The ghost looked at them with an expression that was almost desperate. "Ah! Kind human, thank you for your time." The ghost... bowed? "I am Eurusid, from the Spoken Channels. There has been a dispute which damaged public meeting grounds in the center of the Channels, and both groups refuse to allow the damage to be repaired except by the other group."
Casey's eyes narrowed. It was becoming difficult to stand with the dizziness, and if not the ghost himself, then whatever he was saying was probably a hallucination. They didn't even think about responding beyond a detached "what".
It was then that Danny re-entered the back door with the new tomatoes. Good thing, too. At least with another person there, Casey could confirm whether they were hallucinating.
===
Placing down the grocery bag and shrugging off his jacket in one motion, a skill only gained by years of laziness efficiency, Danny called toward the register. "Back!"
Once he caught sight of the teen, however, all casualness shed itself from his body and he rushed over to hold them. "Man, Casey, you feeling alright? You look really pale." The realization that their form was slightly translucent, despite the firm human heartbeat beneath, was drowned out by him finally noticing the ghost standing a few feet away. The reaction of his ghost sense had been so minor that he had ignored it.
He was surprised to see that he recognized the specter's face, marred as it may have been from worry and confusion aimed directly at Casey. "Eurusid? What's going on?"
As the ghost, still confused but unwilling to act impolitely, gathered his bearings and began to bow toward him, Danny's coworker shuddered under his hands, regaining his full attention. He thought back through the day's events for hints as to the situation, before swearing, cutting off whatever Eurusid was about to say.
Danny backed up and said, voice as clear as he could, "I recall my position."
Casey's reaction was immediate, a gasp of air like they had been kept from breathing and a return of their skin's human opacity. Danny rushed back over and put his hand on their back to steady them as their eyes narrowed and went slightly unfocused.
Figures, doesn't it? One of the many intricacies that had come up at his coronation Junior year that just hadn't come up enough to keep at the front of his mind. One of the defenses of the High Ghost Crown was the ability of the King to temporarily give their duty to someone else. As long as that person accepts, during a specified time they substitute for the King in dealing with political matters, as well as taking over as much as their ability allowed of the King's function to process the energy of the Realms.
Danny had no idea that this ability could be activated with words as vague as "take over my position", let alone that it could be used with a human. That potential had never come up during the ceremony, so for all he knew, a full ghost in his position couldn't substitute with a human. A human certainly shouldn't be able to take over any part of the energy processing, though maybe in Amity Park the average person processed enough environmental ectoplasmic energy to make it possible. Regardless of residence, though, it could not be good for Casey's body, which had no Core to properly process energy and had no human equivalent except perhaps a small emotional center in the brain, to even attempt to filter and manage some of the inherent energy of a dimension.
Their skin was still clammy and their coordination was shot. Ancients, if this is what an accidental substitution did to a human, Danny would have to word things very carefully when asking for help in the future.
"King Phantom?" Danny looked up to see that Eurusid was still floating there awkwardly. Right. He had two people here to help.
"Sorry, Eurusid. One moment, I'll be right with you." He turned back to his coworker, who looked confused and less lucid than ideal, but probably still lucid enough to realize this ghost had just called him "King Phantom". Well, he'd deal with that once it came to it. "Here, Casey, let's get you some water." He helped them walk back into the kitchen and sat them down on a bench by the back door. There was a chair in the register area, but they probably didn't want to feel exposed to the dining area like that, even with nobody but the ghost there.
Once handed the water, Casey sighed and eagerly drank from it, eyes closed. Danny rubbed his hand on their back a bit and promised to be back shortly before walking back out to meet Eurusid. Whatever he was here about was probably worth immediate attention but Danny was sure there'd be at least a solid minute of apologies on both sides before the matter was addressed. Hopefully both the Spoken Channels and Casey would be alright before the next shift came in.

Midnight Snack - Gingerbread 1
Merry Christmas, ya’ll!
I wanted to do something for the holidays involving my slow burn boys. Somehow, this rose to the top. Here is the first taste of Louis and Will switching places in the pred/prey relationship, while in a fantasy setting. ^_^
Midnight Snack - Gingerbread
by peachnewt
Part 1
Once upon a time, a mountain in the West grew so tall that it's peaks, covered in icy snow, would reflect the sun's light like a candle, lighting the valley with a golden glow an hour after sunset. Thus, the mountain was called the Lantern Pillars and the inhabitants of the valley benefitted from the extra hours of light to store away supplies for the harsh winter and pursue artistic endeavors. Buildings and towers stretched like candles ever upwards, bearing banners and stained glass that could be seen in any blizzard. The valley, called Wax Wake, became the jewel of the Pillars, a destination for many nobles and merchant passing through the mountains with their exotic goods.
But one area of the Pillars lay in the lee of the various crags and slopes in the mountain range; a rocky, forested area called the Greyfells. In that dim and cold stretch of land lived a giant name Louis, the Grey.
Louis was an imposing figure, standing almost eighty feet high with wide shoulders, ice gray eyes, and a silvery blond mane of hair. This wasn't a "fee-fi-fo-fum" giant that barreled around the countryside in rough furs, demanding maidens to keep his cave tidy, or oxen to feed his hunger, or gold to upkeep his lifestyle. His mother raised him and his two older brothers better. He kept his cave in semi-chaotic order with baskets and hangers for his possessions, did his own laundry, varied his diet with vegetables and other forage-foods so he didn't need to spend as much money on meat, and he had a yearly stipend for protecting mountain passes from bandits and clearing out rubble for merchant caravans.
But Louis still wore rough furs. Why wear fine wool or linens when they would tear on the slopes? Plus it was cold up there.
And Louis did have a temper. While he didn't boom "fee-fi-fo-fum", he did grumble like a storm when the local coffee house didn't count out enough beans to last until his next monthly grocery run. It was basic math, take the normal about of coffee a person needed and scale it up by sixteen.
When one passed through the mountain trails they saw deep pits from fists, slashes of red, and the strike of an axe blade bigger than a wagon. Sometimes, at night when the Lantern Pillars had dimmed the townsfolk could see sparks flying in the Greyfells, an axe hitting stone. They heard tale of blood-thirst and violence from a surviving bandit that surrendered himself to the authorities in Wax Wake after the band he had been allied with had been destroyed.
At one point in the early Autumn, Louis left for a week. "Visiting family", he said to those left in charge of the mountain pass. When he came back, he had dark bags under his eyes, a large sack over his shoulder, and a posture akin to a starved wolf.
"I'm working on something important," he growled at the human guards. "I'll do my rounds, but don't expect anything else unless it's an emergency."
It had been customary for Wax Wake to hire the giant to help clean the stain glass of their towers, since he could reach them so easily, and hang the new banners for the winter celebrations. They dared not ask this year. Louis stayed in the Greyfells.
No One with any brains or sense of self preservation wandered near the Greyfells, or pried into Louis the Grey's business.
***
"If I had any brains I would have stayed with a caravan and waited until morning," William hissed to himself and the blizzard. His booted feet sunk into another snowdrift.
William had been traveling with a group of builders and craftsmen on their way to Wax Wake to peddle their wears and skills. It was a rite of passage to try their hands in the jeweled city. But their wagon axel broke halfway down the mountain. They hadn't the supplies to repair it and civilization was half a day away. William had offered to find help, and went off in the direction of Wax Wake. Except a blizzard had descended; white, blinding, howling, turning him around until he could not tell north from south.
Night had fallen. William, still lost, squinted for any sign of light in the darkness. He tucked his hands under his armpits, sinking his chin into the scarf around his neck.
His nose, not his sight, had been his salvation. William smelled cloves, ginger, and cinnamon on the breeze. Cookies? William thought. Spicebread? He hadn't eaten since noon and his stomach growled, bidding him onward.
He saw a faint light in the same direction as the scent. Shelter, he hoped.
William wove through the trees and scratching branches until the bramble broke into a clearing pure white. The wind died in the circle, the snow and moonlight pristine as it lit up a lopsided brown shack caked in bits of white. William didn't care how badly made the domicile was, it was shelter from the cold, hopefully occupied with someone that could help him, and feed him.
"Hello?" William trudged on towards the shack. Warm spice hung in the air along with the overwhelming aroma of sugar. And the snow under his feet felt different, more like sand.
He peered into the shack. A stub of a candle, as big around as his thigh, had been lit and took up the majority of the wooden floor. No furniture, no people aside from him.
"Anyone home?"
What an odd house, he mused. Stepping inside, the smell of gingerbread surrounded him, yet the only piece of gingerbread he saw was a stale hunk the size of his fist to the side of the candle. If no one was home, they wouldn't be grudge him a bit of gingerbread from the floor.
While chewing on the hunk of gingerbread, delicious, he examined the rest of the rough house. The vaulted roof had gaps filled in with a white paste burned from the candle. His eye followed the wall, attached to the roof with a tilt, leaving another gap filled in with white paste. The house wasn't hewn from stone, brick, or wood. Was it wattle and daub? Clay?
Will tested a ragged, brown wall, scratching it with a cold fingernail. "It's gingerbread?"
The tiny scratch, however, was enough to test the structural integrity of the shack and find it wanting.
Down came the walls, burying William in giant slabs of gingerbread, snuffing the candle.
---
Will woke stuck between a pool of slowly cooling wax and a slab of gingerbread pinning him across his stomach. Will gasped, trying to fill his lungs. Despite its confectionary nature, the slab of what had once been a roof, or perhaps a wall, could not be shifted no matter how much he struggled. Pinned as he was, he couldn't eat his way out either. He would either freeze to death, or suffocate.
Will bleated out into the night for help until his throat felt like sand and the wax under him had hardened. Then he heard a rumble, vibrating the ground and making the edge of the roof dig deeper into his belly.
An avalanche?
Instead Will heard of roar of frustration and the slab over him was lifted as if it was light as a feather.
A giant face, bearded, blond, and full of icy fury stared at him. The whispered giant of the Greyfells dressed in furs and breath of frost.
"Are you fuckin' kidding me?!"
***
Louis had stomped through the forest towards the protective circle he had set up for his project. He carried a bag of red candies and a pot of icing with a small trowel. If he could get all of the decorations up tonight then he could sleep in the next day. When he arrived, he saw a set of footprints in the pristine snow, and the gingerbread house collapsed. Of course when he lifted the roof he'd find a meddling human.
"Are you fuckin' kidding me!?" Louis snapped.
"What?" breathed the human.
Louis tossed the gingerbread roof to the ground where it broke into four pieces, and then pulled the brown haired human out with one hand. He stared at little menace, eye to beady eye. "I've been trying to keep this damned house together with sugar paste and a prayer, and then you come along and nibble on it like a fuckin' mouse until it falls?!"
"It was an accident!" yelled the human, pawing at the large hand that held him with his one free arm. The tips of his feet, sticking out the other end of the giant's fist, twitched. "I was lost and looking for shelter and food. And the shack wasn't stable, I barely touched it! And the only piece of gingerbread I ate had already fallen from the walls!"
"Shack!?" Fury lit up the giant's eyes like lightning. He squeezed the human just enough to make him wheeze. "I worked all day on this house and you call it a shack?"
"S-sorry, but by definition it was a shack. Though a delicious one. I'm sure you can build a better one in a few hours."
Louis didn't want to admit that the fallen shack had taken him two days, and had been his best effort out of seven.
"I'm out of patience, out of my mind, and out of coffee," growled Louis. He felt cruel and liked it, tapping into the reputation giants had gained as blood-thirsty ogres. "You picked the wrong day to piss me off. Cause I also haven't eaten in the last five days."
Will gulped, suddenly nervous at seeing the giant's perfect grin. "There is something admiral to be found in fasting in protest or in pursuit of a passion. Why break such a streak? Why not six days?"
"Oh, I don't know." Louis let his growling stomach speak for itself, causing the human to blanche. "Maybe because it'll make me feel better."
"I'm sure we can talk about this in a reasonable manner!" screeched the human as he was pulled closer to the giant's mouth.
"Reason left long ago." Around the same time he had left to visit home and got saddled with this ridiculous task.
"There is always time for reason. Starting with introductions! I'm William James Rowe from Brex." William stuck his hand out in the giant's directions, as if expecting a handshake. "And you are?"
Louis unclenched his jaw and breathed in the smell of sweat, sugar, and fear. "Hungry."

I was re-reading some of your fic and noticed you often have people doing chores while they talk (which makes sense) so I must ask: what do you think would be the Yi City gang's favorite and least favorite chores/household tasks? You can definitely include Song Lan and/or make it modern if you wish!
Oh, that’s an interesting question! I hadn’t really thought about it that deeply, I think that I mostly have the easiest time writing a conversation if people have something to do while they’re talking, but this is neat to think about.
In a pre-blindness setting, or in a modern au where Xiao Xingchen is low-vision instead of being completely blind, I think Xiao Xingchen would enjoy simple cleaning a lot, which covers a lot of territory, but I think he would find the process very meditative and satisfying. If he can’t see, it’s a lot harder to tell where it’s needed, or how well he’s done with the work. I think he’s pretty good at mustering enthusiasm for almost anything that needs doing, but that he enjoys doing the laundry the most.
Song Lan, I think, likes the sweeping best. It’s similar to the satisfaction Xiao Xingchen gets(/got) from cleaning, but it’s less... up close and personal, it’s kind of at a sensory remove (I also think he’s generally the worst at Doing Chores, and he’s trying, but he didn’t have the semi-feral mountain-dwelling childhood of Xiao Xingchen or the poverty-driven we-can’t-afford-to-throw-anything-away childhoods of A-Qing or Xue Yang)
A-Qing loves shopping. Even for something as boring as groceries. She’s hampered a little by nominally not being able to see the goods, and shopkeepers see her as an easy mark, which doesn’t make it any easier, but she loves Acquiring Things, and she loves Having Money, and all of that is a win. Short of that, she enjoys chores most as a social activity, so she’s happy to help Xiao Xingchen with whatever he’s doing, or to help Song Lan, and uhhhhh she is less helpful when it comes to just Xue Yang, but she really likes being with Her People.
And Xue Yang! This was surprisingly hard for me to get a grasp on. But I think... he adores home repair/home improvement projects, especially once it looks like they’re going to stay in the yizhuang long-term. I waffled a little on whether or not that counts as ‘chores’, but given the shape the yizhuang was in when they found it, and given the maintenance that old timey houses tended to require, I think it counts. I keep going back to that scene where Xiao Xingchen starts doing roof repair stuff and Xue Yang joins in to help him, and I just love it.
I think A-Qing enjoys the social/financial benefits that come with living in a stable home, but I think Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang are really enjoying the living in a stable home part of the equation, and Xue Yang especially doesn’t have much history with having a place where he lives and expects to stay. Mending the roof is a satisfying activity, because this is his roof, it’s not someone else’s roof, it’s his. I am still always and forever full of emotions for the contrast between ‘I don’t fear death, I fear [boredom/lack of purpose]’ and how hard he fights to keep his little quiet life with Xiao Xingchen in the yizhuang, and I think that’s where I’m coming from with the home repair angle. I was actually not at all sure where I was going to go with him when I started typing this post, but I think I’m very satisfied with that answer, haha

Don’t Be Afraid: Poe Dameron x Solo!Reader - Chapter Three
Chapter Three: Midnight Flight
Series Masterlist
Plot: Reader can’t sleep after the day she had, she finds her way to the hanger where she finds Poe. He decides to take her mind off of things.
Warnings: Literally two suggestive lines, a healthy dose of angst in the beginning and a whole lot of fluff.
Word Count: 3.6k
A/N: This one took a while, I’m trying to build the Reeader and Poe’s relationship with only so much time to do it. I semi hate what I wrote and I also semi like it, life of a writer lol. We’re going to jump into TFA in the next chapter so this is the last chill chapter for a while, enjoy!
——————-
Leia and Han fell in love with y/n the moment they met her. They decided to raise her as their own, no one was more ecstatic about the decision than Ben. He’d been asking his parents about a sibling for a while. He doted on y/n and stayed by her side constantly trying to help her adjust to her new life.
Y/n adjusted quickly, she became just as attached to Ben and the two became inseparable. She loved Han and Leia, though she didn’t start addressing them as ‘mom’ nd ‘dad’ until about a year after Ben found her. She still had memories of her birth parents, though very few, and she struggled with shifting those roles to other people. One random night as Leia and Han said goodnight to their children, she said it without even thinking,
“Goodnight, Mom. Goodnight, Dad.”
Once they were out of the room, Han and Leia blinked, looked at each other and headed to bed.
Ben and Y/n were each other’s best friend all throughout childhood. They became even closer once they both realized Y/n could use the Force. When they’d discovered it, it was a typical day on the Falcon. They were on Coruscant so Leia could attend a Senate hearing and Han was outside with Chewie doing minor repairs. Y/n and Ben had gotten into a fight (they may have been best friends, but they were still siblings) and at one point, Ben used the Force on Y/n to shove her into a wall. He’d never used his abilities on her like that, she’d felt anger towards her brother before but this was pure rage. As if she’d done it all her life, she threw her hand out towards Ben and he went backwards straight into the cockpit and fell onto the dashboard. Unfortunately, he fell on the button that powered up the ship and it roared to life. The siblings looked at each other in horror, partially at what Y/n had just done and partially at what their father was going to do to them. Ben slammed his hand down on the button and powered the ship down quickly as he heard Han and Chewie coming inside.
“What the hell are you two doing in here?!” Han yelled through the ship as he approached the cockpit.
“How many times have I told you to NEVER touch ANYTHING in this room unless I say so?” Han asked with a raised tone, Chewie roaring in support behind him. “Well?”
Y/n opened her mouth to speak and beg for her father’s forgiveness, when she was cut off by her brother.
“We were running around and I slipped and hit the button. I promise it was an accident, Dad, I’m really sorry.” Ben explained, Han looking over at him before turning to Y/n.
“But I was the one that was chasing him, so it’s really my fault.” Y/n interjected, “I’m sorry, Dad, we should have been more careful.”
Han ran a hand through his hair and grumbled something. “Alright, alright. I’ll let your mother deal with the two of you when she gets back. Now Chewie and I are gonna finish up out there,” he pointed a finger at them both, “No more running.” With that, Chewie and him left.
Y/n wrapped her arms around him and cried into his shirt, “I’m so sorry, I’m so so sorry. I swear I didn’t mean to do that!”
“Y/n, I’m not even mad anymore. How long have you known you could use the Force?” Ben asked as he pulled her away so he could see her face.
She sniffled, “I didn’t! I swear I never knew about it, I would have told you if I’d known!”
Ben let out an astonished laugh, “This is so cool! Mom’s gonna be ao excited when you show her! Dad probably won’t like it but-“
”Whoa, whoa, whoa, Ben.” Y/n took a step back and dried her eyes, “They can’t ever know about this. EVER.”
”Why would you not tell them?”
Y/n motioned to the dashboard, “Do you not remember what just happened? I hurt you! I’m not ever doing that again.”
Ben rolled his eyes, “Okay, yeah, and I’ll get you back for it at some point but Y/n, you can’t just keep this to yourself.”
”Yes, I can and yes, I am. Ben,” Y/n walked towards him and held his hand, “The feeling that went through me when I pushed you, it was...scary. I felt like I didn’t have control and that’s how you ended up hurt. I don’t want to risk hurting you or anybody else.”
Ben sighed and pulled her into his arms, he didn’t agree with her at all but he couldn’t force her into using her abilities. He also didn’t understand what it was like to discover that power. He’d grown up using the Force, it was second nature to him.
Y/n pulled back after a moment, “Promise me this stays between us. Mom and Dad can’t ever find out UNLESS I decide to tell them.”
Ben nodded sadly, “I promise.”
”I’m serious, nothing to anyone. And that includes Uncle Chewie.”
He scoffed, “Y/n, I would never betray you. I promise.”
—————-
I couldn’t sleep.
I’d hidden in my room all day, too shaken to do anything else after my training session. I’d skipped dinner, I’d ignored knocks at my door, I’d shut everyone and everything out. Come 10 o’ clock, I changed into pajamas and climbed into bed ready to put an end to the day.
Ha. Right.
I tossed and turned for two hours before I gave up and threw the covers off. I was tired, but clearly not enough to sleep. I went to my desk, grabbed the robe that hung off the chair and tied it around my body. I opened my door and left my room, pressing the lock on the datapad and watching the door close.
It was late so there were hardly any people moving through the residential part of the base. There was one pilot coming back from a mission, a tech worker who’d clearly been working all evening...
The general’s daughter who was wandering around base in her pajamas thinking about the lightsaber sitting in her room.
There were reasons for my conflicting feelings towards using the Force. The first time I’d ever used it was out of anger to hurt someone I loved. That was reason enough to be worried about it happening again one day. But over the years of secret training sessions, I’d gained better control of my emotions. I’d grown up seeing my Force-sensitive mother use it only for good, but I’d also witnessed the dark side of it in it’s purest form.
And I’d witnessed it in the person I loved the most in the galaxy.
At the thought of my brother, I leaned my head against the nearest wall and stopped walking. It didn’t matter how many years it had been, losing him still felt like a fresh wound. Maybe the wound had never closed because I was fighting a war and it wasn’t with him at my side. The rest of the galaxy saw the war as the Resistance vs. the First Order, but for me it was brother vs. sister in a fight they never should have been in.
I pushed off the wall and continued down the hallway, passing the empty cafeteria and a few offices. Reading the names of my peers on the plaques next to their doors, I felt envious. All these people knew who they were and exactly what they were doing their lives. I was Leia’s daughter, I was expected to know exactly what I was doing at all times when privately, I was a complete mess. I was fighting a war against my brother, my family had been torn apart, and there was a lightsaber sitting in my room that I simultaneously loved and hated. I wanted so badly to be as stable and steady as my fellow commamnders, the people that answered to me deserved that from me. I wanted to do my part in this war and make sure the First Order’s reign of terror across the galaxy ended.
I just wished things weren’t so complicated.
Somehow, I’d ended up on the opposite end of base outside the hanger. It made sense that my feet naturally carried me there, it’s where I spent most of my free time. Whether it was bringing Jess lunch when she was too busy to leave, watching potential recruits run test flights or helping Poe with repairs on his ship...
Speak of the devil, there he was doing just that. Only the bottom half of his body was visible as his top half was buried in the cockpit of his X-Wing. Intrigued as to his reason for not being in the cantina drinking his squad under the table, I made my way over to him.
“Someone looks surprisingly sober.”
His head popped up at the sound of my voice, turning on the ladder he was standing on to face me,
“The parts came in to fix the guidance system,” he said, wiping his hands on a dirty rag, “Shots with Snap and Jess can wait.”
I hummed in acknowledgement and came to stand below his ladder. Poe turned back around and continued working, “Why are you up so late?”
I put a hand on the ladder, “Can’t sleep, my brain and I aren’t getting along.”
Poe chuckled, “How so?”
”Well, I wanted to sleep but my head thinks that I should evaluate every regret, problem and emotional trauma I’ve ever had.”
He stood to his full height and took a few steps down the ladder, “Well, forget the cantina, you’re having all the fun tonight.”
I laughed and pressed my forehead against the ladder, Poe took a seat on a step so we were face to face. He was dressed in his orange jumpsuit, but it was tied at his waist, and a tight grey tee shirt. He looked surprisingly awake for the time, whereas I looked like a Corellian freighter had hit me.
“You wanna talk about it?”
I shook my head gently against the cool steel of the ladder. Poe was no stranger to my family history, I’d talked to him before about my brother but I could only say so much. Poe naturally looked at Kylo Ren as pure evil, I saw my brother who’d been misled and manipulated by a dark force.
He sighed, “Well, how about we take your mind off of all these deep dark secrets you’re keeping from me?”
I had to stop mself from laughing, if only he knew...
“What’re you thinking, Dameron?”
Mischief came over his face immediately, he gestured up to the massive ship we were standing below. I connected the dots, quickly realizing his ingenious idea,
“No,” I said firmly, causing Poe to smile.
“Yes.” He replied.
“You already almost killed me once today and I’m pretty sure I said I was never flying with you again.”
Poe started zipping up his flight suit, “Yeah, and you’ve said that a hundred times yet you always get back in a ship with me.”
He had me there, Poe was reckless and impulsive yet for some reason, I still trusted him with my life.
He was already climbing the ladder and awaiting my reply expectantly. I looked to him, rolled my eyes and followed him up. Once I was at the top, he was already seated and I realized where I’d be sitting,
“How the hell are you going to fly safely with me sitting on your lap?”
A coy smile appeared on his face, “Guess you’ll have to find out.”
Rolling my eyes, I awkwardly stepped in between Poe’s legs and looked behind to see where I was going to land. Why did this feel like it was crossing some sort of line in our friendship? One part of my mind was protesting and the other part was practically shoving my body down happily. Splitting the difference, I cautiously sunk down onto my friend’s lap. Poe placed his hands on my hips without warning to situate the both of us. The warmth of his touch sept through my thin robe and pajamas, simultaneously making me nervous and at ease.
Poe flipped a switch that turned on his beloved ship, I leaned back to look at him. He looked like he did earlier in the day; happy, content, relaxed.
“Ready?”
I smiled softly, “Let’s fly, Dameron.”
Without me realizing, he’d grabbed hold of the controls and lifted us up in the air. I’d flown all my life, but never in an X-Wing, and it moved much differently than the ships I’d piloted. Poe guided us out of the hanger and before I knew it, we were flying above D’Qar’s lush landscapes.
“Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”
“We’re not going anywhere, just for a fly.” Poe replied as he made a slow left turn to get us further from base. “I’m also going to teach you how to fly an X-Wing.”
“Seriously?” I asked with a little too much excitement in my voice.
He smiled at my eagerness, “Well, you’re gonna learn how to steer at least. Okay, the joystick’s pretty sensitive so you’ve got to be careful. And make sure not to press any of the buttons, especally the red one or we’re going to eject right out of the ship.”
I blew out a breath, “Right, no pressure.”
“Pfft, if you’ve flown the Millenium Falcon, you can handle this.”
“I never said I flew it, you just seemed to assume that I had.” I pointed out quickly, turning my head to face him.
“Yeah, and you’ve never once denied it.” Poe said smugly as if he’d trapped me.
“Are we going to argue or are we going to fly?” I asked loudly.
“I’m sure we’ll find a way to do both,” Poe replied, while making a small turn, “Alright, grab the joystick.”
He let go with one hand and I took hold of it, once I had a grip he let go with his other. I was officially flying an X-Wing on my own.
I laughed, “This is so cool!”
Poe seemed to enjoy how enthusiastic I was, “If this is how excited you get just going straight, I can’t imagine what you’ll be like when you do something complex.”
A smirk appeared on my face, “What, you mean like this?”
Without warning, I pulled up on the joystick sending us straight up in the air. Poe let out a yelp and his arms flew to my waist, I maneuvered the stick so we’d do a loop. Once we’d straightened out, I started laughing, partially from adrenaline and partially from Poe’s reaction.
“What the hell, Y/n?!”
“Now you know what it’s like to fly with you!” I replied, stlll laughing. His arms were wrapped tightly around my waist still as if he was afraid I was going to do it again. He’d started laughing with me and had his forehead pressed between my shoulder blades. This was another one of those warm, relaxed moments that I wished we could share more often. But somehow tonight felt like...different.
“Alright, daredevil, I’m taking us back to base.” Poe said, reaching around me to take control of the ship. I found myself missing his arms as soon as they were gone from my waist.
Within a few minutes, we were landing in the hanger. Poe pressed the button that extended the ladder to the ground and I climbed down first, him following suit.
“That was pretty fun, I’ll hand it to you.” I said as we leisurely strolled out of the hanger into the halls.
“Glad I could help get your mind off of things,” Poe replied, “And, of course, I just brought up whatever you’re trying to avoid.”
He sounded dejected in his last sentence, ”It’s okay,” I put my hand on his arm, “Tonight was great but my problems were going to be waiting for me as soon as I got back to my room.”
“Then don’t go back to your room tonight.” Poe stated nonchalantly.
“So your solution is me going and snuggling with my mommy?”
He chuckled, “No, you can stay with me.”
There it was, that feeling that I’d gotten several times tonight. When I’d sat down in his lap, praying that he didn’t sense how awkward I felt. When he’d wrapped his arms around me and lingered for a few minutes. What had suddenly changed between us where Poe and I put in more intimate situations and I felt nervous?
I tried not to let the tone of my thoughts come out in my words, “Stay with you?”
“Well, yeah,” Poe said, shrugging his shoulders and stopping in our path, “You need sleep and I know you well enough to know you’re going to stay up all night worrying if you’re alone.”
I let out a small laugh, sometimes I forgot how well he knew me. That’s exactly what was going to happen. With Poe there, I’d be forced to try and get some sleep. Against my better judgement, listening to the part of my mind that loved being wrapped in his arms moments ago, I caved...
“Alright, it’s worth a shot.”
Looking victorious, we continued down the hall making a different turn towards Poe’s quarters. He wasn’t too far from my own, we were both commanders, but I was closer to my mother’s room. We arrived at his door and he entered his code into the datapad, letting me in first.
Poe’s quarters were fairly minimalistic. A few knickknacks he’d picked up during his travels stood on his desk. A picture of him and his father, Kes, was pinned to the wall while one of him and Black Squadron hung next to it. BB-8’s charging station laid in a corner, the lovable droid himself plugged in alraedy and turned off. A few jackets and clothes were strewn on chairs, and his bed that stood close to the door. I’d been here dozens of times, yet this time I felt like I was paying more attention to my surroundings.
“I’m gonna do us both a favor and wash up real quick, go ahead and make yourself comfortable.” Poe said, grabbing some clothes from his dresser amd disappearing into his bathroom.
I sat down on the edge of his bed and put my head in my hands, chuckling at my situation. I could think of a dozen girls on base who would renounce their families to spend a night with the legendary Poe Dameron. Here I was trying to slow my suddenly rapid heartbeat at the thought of sleeping next to him, my best friend. When the hell did this happen? I stood up, untied my robe and hung it off of Poe’s desk chair. Walking back to the bed, I flipped over the covers on one side and crawled under.
After a few minutes, Poe exited the bathroom and I peeked over at him. He’d changed into a pair of grey sweatpants and a black tank top that clung tightly to his torso. His eyes fell on me and he gave a soft smile, as if the sight of me in his bed made him happy. He switched off the light to the room and walked over to his side of the bed. I wasn’t sure how to position myself, standard issue beds were fairly small and we’d definitely be somewhat up against each other. He turned on his side and I did the same,
“Thank you for this...It’s just been a stressful day.” I said quietly, I didn’t have to speak very loud considering our faces were only a few inches apart.
“I get it, or maybe I don’t, we won’t know till you talk to me,” he said, his last words spoken in a singsong tone.
I laughed, “Not tonight, remember? Tonight’s about distracting me.”
Even in the dark, I could see that familiar eyebrow going up, “I can think of several things we haven’t tried yet.”
I hoped the darkness concealed my suddenly red cheeks. Usually I could dish it back out to him without a second thought, but tonight I found myself trying not to let my mind drift to the ideas Poe was alluding to.
“Yeah,” I spoke up, “Like going to sleep.”
Poe comically rolled his eyes, “Fine, if you want to go the boring route.”
I reached over and placed a hand on his bicep, “Thanks for always being there for me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Hey, that goes both ways, sweetheart.” Poe replied, reaching up to gently run his hand up and down my arm. His touch created goosebumps I hoped he wouldn’t feel, but knew he could. For just a second as we looked into each other’s eyes, I thought I saw his flicker to my lips. But it was too quick a movement to confirm.
“C’mere,” he mumbled, opening his arms to me.
My body went into autopilot mode and I moved into his arms before giving it a second thought. I placed one of my hands on his chest and wrapped the other around his torso. I could feel his mother’s ring that hung from his neck under his tank top. One of his hands cradled my head and the other was splayed out on my back, anchoring me to him. This was the most comfortable and at ease I thought I’d ever been in my life. Poe’s skin smelled fresh from the shower, his firm grip on my back was comforting and his body was the type of warmth you could lose yourself in.
Well, if we hadn’t crossed a line already tonight, I was pretty sure we had now...
“Get some sleep, Y/n.” Poe whispered, resting his chin on top of my head. I softly hummed in agreement as I felt myself already beginning to drift off...

A/N: Well, that’s all she wrote. Actually, she wrote many scenes that didn’t make it in but whatever...We’re slowly starting to piece together the Reader and Ben’s history, honestly that’s one of my favorite parts to write. Next week, we jump into TFA. In the words of Anakin Skywalker, this is where the fun begins 😏 Hope you enjoy!!

Mushy Brain Bits
More of the same story. Now on AO3 if you prefer to read in chronological order.
I was peripherally aware of the slow but steady countdown to my inevitable termination but not coherent enough to notify my humans. My governor spun up a semi-functional external process that attempted to disable my weapons and combat-ready modules. I had no way of determining whether it had succeeded, or to what extent.
I could still hear the humans speaking somewhere in close proximity, but the meanings of their words dissolved into static and gibberish. The termination process informed me that a diagnostic would not resolve the issue, so I stopped trying to issue the relevant command.
My organic neural tissue had a better idea of what was happening — it appeared less affected by the internal breakdown — but all it could was continue issuing dire warnings that I couldn't interpret. Since receiving unknown messages from the mushy brain bits was a relatively common occurrence, I paid it little attention.
Suddenly, a strong new connection flared inside my brain, followed by a torrent of informational data, most of which appeared to be calibration parameters and authorization strings. The content reminded me of a new handler attempting to connect to my systems, something I was familiar with. The passwords were entirely wrong, and my governor spit them back out as invalid. At this point, I had enough self-awareness to work around the module's apparent stupidity. Anything programmed by humans tended to be far too brittle and inflexible to work outside of extremely narrow parameters, and I was learning to compensate.
Regardless, the connection stabilized 1.52 minutes later, and now it very much resembled access to a handler. I sent all of my normal data logging through it to the human on the other side. It took me another full minute to recognize that the person registered as my new handler was Cass, and longer still to determine that the process was significantly taxing her augments, even with the ship providing assistance.
My performance rating stabilized enough to begin rebuilding my internal processes and repairing my walls. I tried to do so with as little input from the human as possible, but this proved difficult and then outright impossible. A lot of my functions relied on handler input and approval, and I was making the problem worse every time I made the request.
So, I stopped and chose a buffer statement that applied. This unit will shut down.
Cass appeared in my direct line of sight. "Wait, what, why?" The words came out in a rush. "Is something wrong? Are you hurt? Did we mess up the connection?"
From somewhere behind her, Kris added, "This Combat SecUnit does not have functional vocal cords. They appear to have been removed. Perhaps that's why it's using canned answers wherever possible."
"I'm tempted to burn down the Rim just to watch the fireworks," the woman grumbled as she frantically queried data from the ship. But she was human, and Serenity's logs were almost more complicated than mine. I grabbed the ship's convoluted data packet, parsed into coherent data, and shoved it into the human's inbox.
"Oh deity, thank you!" Cass slid to the floor and sat there, reading it.
I had access to her vital signs through the shared connection and saw that they were stable for the moment. So long as I did nothing that required approval, the connection wasn't overly taxing to the human. At least not in the near term.
My previous handler hated reading logs and never bothered with anything more complicated than a high-level overview. So Cass' need to know everything made me reconsider how I was providing information and what made sense. I tried again, with fewer data points, but more concrete answers this time.
Data packet: Unit is causing damage to handler's incompatible systems. Unit should be permitted to enter stasis until further calibration can occur.
The human pushed herself upright, dropped into a chair, and rolled herself toward me. She positioned her display surface within easy reach of my shackled hand. She hadn't read the inbox message, probably because it was so low in priority.
"Explain what I need to do in order to give you what you need. Don't shut down without an explanation."
I didn't need the keyboard. Human augment failure imminent.
The other human added, "It's right, Cass. According to MedSystem you got pretty close to cardiac arrest territory there for a minute. And your augments are running at like 300% of their normal operating specs."
Cass threw her hands up in the air. "I'm working on it, all right. I mean, there are more efficient ways of doing this. Handlers probably have access to the best code, while I have… what I can come up with. It's fine."
"It's not fine," Kris mumbled.
My handler was already making adjustments — changes to the data she was sending and to the way she was receiving any information I sent her. Within minutes, she had pared down the connection to more reasonable input and output streams. I thought the other human wasn't giving Cass enough credit for her ingenuity. My previous handler couldn't have done half of what she had accomplished in under an hour.
I tried to remain still and make no requests, which meant my walls remained down and most of my functions were disabled. At least, I was conscious while Cass worked on stabilizing herself and Kris began undocking procedures to leave the station.

The semi-sucky fanfic! Angst warning ig
Janus loved the rain. It doesn’t matter when or where he was, when it was storming he always felt calm. It might’ve been because of the way it sounded, or that it made everything seem blurry. It felt like the rain erased all of his problems, and made his form look normal too. Nothing could make him feel that way like rain.
He was so grateful that the night after the wedding fiasco, it was pouring rain. At around midnight, he was awakened by a huge clap of thunder. For a moment, the Lord of the Lies just sat there, taking in the dim barrage of water through the window. His limbs were heavy with the need to sleep, but everytime he closed his eyes he was plagued by the memories of the day. Lee and Mary Lee, walking away to dance at the party. Patton turning into a frog. Thomas slumping forward with exhaustion. Roman, with a pathetic smirk on his face, laughing at his name. It was all too much.
Maybe ten minutes of silence passed. Janus needed to make sure no one heard him. When the time came that he knew no one would hear, he slithered out of bed and headed downstairs. He didn’t bother to turn on the light, knowing his snake eye would adjust faster. He wished it wouldn’t. Maybe if he had a normal face, a normal eye, it would be easier to get along with the other Sides. The only one who really liked him or trusted him was Remus, but that relationship is built on mutual gain.
He had another friend too. But that is a wound no one can repair.
As Janus walked to the kitchen, he struggled to find a solution. Most of his life is based on his job. Protect Thomas, lie for Thomas, do everything to make Thomas the best- so no one can hurt him. But this was different. Everything outside of Thomas’s mind is fine; he has friends, a stable job, he’s even famous. No, something inside his mind is wrong.
Who is it? One of the Light Sides?
Him?
Deceit sat down with a sigh. Clearly, this was not helping. It would be more helpful to just pretend everything is normal.
He could lie to himself, too, for one more night.
Snakes can’t drink hot tea. They can get burned really easily, and Janus wasn’t looking to risk another hospital trip just to get a nice feeling inside. He had loved the taste of tea, but nothing was worth that nightmare. Another one of the joys of being a monster, he thought. So, on a rainy April night, Janus decided to sit in the dark and drink iced tea.
As Janus was getting his tea, there was a rustling from the stairs. He glanced at the clock as rustling turned into footsteps. It was two in the morning. Why would anyone be awake?
He thought he should move or hide. It wasn’t Remus (he would probably throw himself down the stairs screaming, not tip-toeing), so they probably wouldn’t want to see him. But Janus just didn’t have the energy to move right now. Every part of his body ached. There was no other choice.
The last person Deciet expected to see was Virgil. He hadn’t seen the guy, in fact, since the trial. And Virgil was normally not happy to see him.
Virgil shuffled over to Deceit, his eyes fluttering open and closed. He went slowly over to the tea pot, inspected the water inside, and quietly began to make tea. He didn’t act like Janus wasn’t there; he glanced over occasionally, in a Virgil kind of way. Even though he wasn’t glaring or hissing, Virgil didn’t like that Janus was there. The tension was still very present.
When Virgil’s tea was boiling, and he sat down with the tea bag, Deceit had to say something. The awkwardness, to him, was unbearable.
“Virgil. I didn’t see you at all today.” Deceit kept a small smirk on, just like he normally did. He wasn’t nervous. He wasn’t sad.
“Yeah, you guys had a pretty nice handle on the wedding.” Virgil snapped. He obviously didn’t want to talk. But he never did, so Deciet moved on.
“Not like I care or anything, but what are you doing up so early?” Deceit sipped some of his tea. “It’s not even light outside.”
“This is just another day for me.” Virgil replied. “I never get any sleep, especially not after the shit you keep pulling.”
The insult in his voice made Deciet want to stop pushing. But there was something about Virgil’s tone that made him want to pry. Somethings he just knew.
“If this is about Patton, I-”
“Would you stop pushing it!” Virgil said. His voice got louder, seeming to multiply. He looked away from Deciet, but that didn’t matter. He had witnessed Anxiety’s voice before.
“Virgil, I’m only trying to help.” Deceit tried to lace his voice with sympathy, but it ended up sounding like the voice he put up when he lied. Virgil noticed too.
“Stop helping! You can’t fix this, you already ruined it! Thomas was freaking out at the wedding!” Virgil whisper-shouted, not wanting to wake anyone up. “I had work that whole time, trying not to get too bad! All because of you!”
Deceit had tried. This always used to happen, back when Virgil was one of them. They would argue, use their powers, and then walk away in silence. No one wanted to reveal their feelings. Well, not today. Thomas, at least, needed that.
Instead, he put his head on the table. That, of course, is something Virgil hadn’t planned for. Slowly, he sat down, still keeping far away from the other side. After a while, he murmured, “I don’t understand why this happened. This is what we wanted, right?”
“I’m not so sure.” Deceit said. “We wanted to go to the callback. But, Thomas’s friendship got in the way. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing.”
Virgil looked at Deceit as if he had grown scales. Or rather, had no scales at all. “What?” Deceit asked.
“You’ve never said that. You always seem to know everything. At least, you acted like it.”
“Yeah, well, I don’t.” Janus sighed. He hadn’t wanted to make tonight worse. Sitting in bed with the memories of the day seemed a lot better than being with this mess of a history. He got up to go.
“Wait, Deceit.” Virgil looked down. “Why did you come down here tonight? You only do on really bad days.”
Deceit hesitated. “How do you know when I come downstairs in the middle of the night?”
“I come down most every night, and you’ve only done that on… eventful nights.”
He debated telling Virgil his name, or his story. Why should Virgil need to know or care? The others certainly didn’t.
Then he looked at where Virgil stood. He looked so much better since he became a light side. He doesn’t look quite so skinny, and he seemed calmer before. Not right now, of course, but when he’s with the others. He obviously made the right choice.
“Do you really want to know?” Deceit asked. After Virgil nodded, Deceit sat down. And told him what had happened after the wedding.
When he came to the part of his name, Deceit faltered. Virgil hadn’t heard it before. What if he laughed? He couldn’t risk it. So he just said “when I told them my name”. There’s no reason he would want to know it anyway.
When the story was done, they sat in silence. It was less tense than before, but still uncomfortable. Virgil finally responded with, “Roman is always like that. He was with me, but he’ll get better.” He looked at Janus. “If there’s one thing they taught me, it’s that change can happen.”
For once, Janus couldn’t figure out his tone of voice. But after that, he stood up to go. “Virgil?” Janus said softly. Virgil turned to face him.
Janus slowly, tentatively took off his glove. Holding his bare hand up, he looked up at Virgil. “My name… is Janus.”
Virgil looked at Janus, and gave him the smallest ghost of a smile. “Good luck.” He climbed the stairs and disappeared into his room. Janus stayed there the rest of the night, watching the rain with that little smile in his mind.
Maybe things can change. For the better this time.

ONE HUNDRED TWO - WAKANDA
LEGACY: A Tony Stark Daughter Story
MASTERLIST
< previous
Word Count: 1,875ish
Summary: The Team goes to Wakanda for help. Steve and Bucky are reunited.
The quinjet ride to Wakanda was mostly silent. We were mentally preparing ourselves for what we knew was coming, or what we guessed was coming. I was still trying to keep my connection with Tony. I could feel that he was still alive, but I was trying to reach into his mind to speak to him. Even just to say goodbye and that I love him one last time. Steve had been next to me for most of the flight, holding onto my hand. But once he stood up and began walking towards the pilots seat, I knew that we were almost there.
“Drop 2600, heading 0-3-0,” Steve instructed.
“I hope you’re right about this, Cap,” Sam said. “Or we’re gonna land a lot faster than you want to.”
I looked up to understand what Sam was saying. We were heading straight into the trees. I stood up and walked over to Steve, our hands brushing together as I stood beside him. He quickly grabbed my hand. As the quinjet continued on, the trees were revealed to be a camouflage force field and the grand city of Wakanda appeared.
Steve gave me a quick kiss on the head before turning us around as the quinjet landed. I walked out, still holding Steve’s hand, with Natasha on the other side of us. We were followed by Rhodey and Bruce, who were followed by Wanda and Vision, with Sam finishing up powering down the quinjet.
“Seems like I’m always thanking you for something,” Steve stated as his free hand reached out to shake T’Challa’s. I looked over at Bruce and watched him awkwardly bow to the King.
“Uh, we don’t do that here,” T’Challa said, waving for Bruce to stop bowing.
He reached out and took my hand, putting it to his lips for a kiss before I could stop him. “Miss Stark. It’s a pleasure to see you again. I wish it was under better circumstances.”
“Like wise,” I said as Steve gave my hand a gentle squeeze.
“The Captain has spoken very highly of you.” I gave him a small smile as a light, embarrassed blush came to my cheeks. T’Challa continued, “So how big of an assault can we expect?” T’Challa turned around and we started following him towards a building.
“Uh, sir, I think you can expect quite a big assault,” Bruce answered, trying to push his way closer to the front.
“How we looking?” Nat asked.
“You will have my King’s Guard, the Border Tribe, the Dora Milaje, and…” T’Challa trialed off and I quickly followed his eye line to see who he was looking at. I let go of Steve’s hand and froze in place as Steve continued to walk on.
“A semi-stable, 100-year-old man,” Bucky joked.
The two long-time friends shared a hug as visions of the Winter Soldier beating me played through my mind and, without me realizing, began projecting outwards. I could feel that Bucky was no longer the Winter Soldier, but it didn’t change my fear. It didn’t change what had happened. I tried to remember what it felt like when I went to help him in Bucharest, but my recent time at HYDRA was affecting my feelings towards the man. Bucky and Steve continued to chat as Sam came up to me.
“You okay, Bailey?” He asked, stepping up to my side. The visions played through his mind as he got closer. “Woah, Bai—“ He went to put a caring arm around me, but I quickly shook my head and flinched away. He retracted his hand, a concerned expression etched on his face.
“I’ll be fine.” I couldn’t take my eyes off Bucky, fear evident on my face, and Sam could see all of it.
“I don’t think you’ll be fine. And that’s okay… He has changed though. At least that’s what we’ve heard.”
“Doesn’t change what happened and the fact that I’m still scared… I know he wasn’t in control. And why I’m feeling this way isn’t exactly his fault. But—”
“But he still did those things.” Sam looked at me with sorrow in his eyes. “Does Steve know?”
I shook my head. “I don’t believe he knows the whole story.”
I believed that Steve knew that I knew the Winter Soldier, but not what he had put me through. I took a deep breath, trying to stop the projections so that they wouldn’t hit Steve. Steve turned around, excited for me to finally know the Bucky he remembered and saw the fear plastered on my face. He rushed over to my side.
“Bailey, are you okay?” Steve worriedly asked.
“Bailey?” Bucky questioned, stepping towards me. He studied me carefully. “It is you… It’s been awhile.” My breath began hitching and I couldn’t form words.
“Bailey?” Steve worried. “Sweetheart?” I flinched at the nickname but my focus never left Bucky. “You remember trying to help him, right?”
“It’s not that, Steve,” Bucky answered. “It’s about years ago.”
“Did you know her?” Steve questioned.
“Yes,” Bucky sadly replied.
Steve looked at me, finally noticing the fear in my eyes. “What exactly happened between you two?"
“I… I, um… the Soldier…”
“I used to train with the Soldier and he… he would beat me,” I quietly stated, stepping forward.
“What?” Steve questioned, snapping his head my way. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“There was never a good time…”
“A good time? Really, that’s your excuse?”
“Do you ever think there’s a good time to tell the man you love that his best friend used to beat you for not training hard enough?” I snapped. Steve took a small, cautionary step back. My anger projecting outward a little. “He was— is your best friend, Steve. Would you have believed me if I told you?”
“But you went to Bucharest to help him, why?”
“Because she loves you,” Bucky answered. “At least that’s what she told me when she showed up that day… It’s okay, Bailey. They’ve taken HYDRA out of my head.” Bucky tried to reassure me and move on from Steve’s questions. “I am so sorry.”
“Can I see your hand?” I reached for Bucky’s human hand. “I can feel that you’ve changed, but I just need to be sure… So that I can trust you and not be scared anymore.”
Bucky willingly set his hand in mine, knowing that I wasn’t trying to control him, and I searched through his mind. They had cleared HYDRA out of his mind and I was surprised to find that he even remembered me, since his memory was still being repaired. I let go of his hand and took a deep breath before forcing him into a hug.
“I am so sorry for what I did to you,” Bucky whispered as he hugged me back.
“It’s okay,” I responded. “It wasn’t you.” I took another deep breath, readying myself for what I was about to say. “I forgive you Buck,” I whispered into his neck. He held me a bit tighter.
“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”
“Well too bad. I forgive you, for hurting me, for killing my grandparents.” He tensed up. “For all of it… Everyone deserves another chance, Bucky. Even you… Plus… My fear is not all your fault…”
Bucky pulled back, giving me a worried look before looking at Steve and then back to me. “So… You two, huh?” He pointed at Steve and I.
“I guess,” I laughed. “Crazy, isn’t it?”
“How did you end up with this old man?” Bucky joked.
“Hey!” Steve said, faking offense. Though, I could feel a tinge of real offense flow through him.
“It’s a long story,” I said. “And I still don’t know if we’re actually together. Perhaps once this is all over we can get a drink and catch up.”
“I’d like that,” Bucky responded, a hit of hopefulness in his voice.
Steve and I then left Bucky, Sam, and Rhodey to watch the grounds as we went to see what they could do for Vision. When we got to the lab, Vision was lying on an exam table with Shuri studying a hologram projection of the stone over him. Bruce was on the other side of her, watching her every moment. He was in awe of Shuri’s brilliance and the technology that she had at her finger tips.
“Whoa. The structure is polymorphic,” Shuri stated.
“Right, we had to attach each neuron non-sequentially,” Bruce says.
“Why didn’t you just reprogram the synapses to work collectively?” Shuri asked.
Vision turned to Bruce, seemingly asking the same thing. It was a solid question, what hadn’t we? Maybe because we were rushing to stop a murder bot. Just no big deal, there was no reason that we had to rush into creating Vision. Plus that he was basically created by Thor’s lightning after he had disappeared for 24 hours. So we had plenty of time to rethink everything.
“Because, we didn’t think of it,” Bruce answered with uncertainty.
“I’m sure you did your best,” Shuri reassured with a smile.
“Can you do it?” Wanda asked. Her worry was strong but I knew that it wasn’t my place to help calm her.
“Yes, but there are more than two trillion neurons here. One misalignment could cause a cascade of circuit failures.” Shuri turned to T’Challa. “It will take time, brother.”
“How long?” Steve asked, giving my hand a squeeze before he let it go and stepped closer to the group.
“As long as you can give me.” A chime went off and I watched as Okoye, T’Challa’s head guard, brought a hologram of the Earth up in her palm.
“Something’s entered the atmosphere,” Okoye stated.
“Hey, Cap, we got a situation here,” Sam warned over the comms. I watched out the window as a shield appeared over the city and one of the alien ships slammed into it.
“Gosh, I love this place,” I heard Bucky say.
“Yeah, don’t start celebrating yet, guys.” Rhodey warned. “We got incoming outside the dome.”
I watched as the shock waves and debris from the ships destroy the forest and boil up against the dome. I look to Steve as him and T’Challa share concerned glances.
I felt how scared they both were, how afraid, and the need they had to protect everyone. They have no idea what we are getting ourselves into. I turned towards the exam table when I heard Vision struggling to sit up and slide off the table.
“It’s too late,” he said. “We need to destroy the stone now.”
“Vision, get your ass back on the table,” Nat demanded.
“Agreed,” I stepped in. “Vis, I don’t want to have to force you down but you know I can and I will.”
“We will hold them off,” T’Challa stated as he and his guards started for the door. Steve turned to Wanda.
“Wanda, as soon as the stone’s out of his head… you blow it to hell,” Steve instructed.
“I will,” Wanda said.
“Evacuate the city. Engage all defense procedures,” T’Challa commanded. He stopped before fully exiting the room, turned, and pointed to Steve. “And get this man a shield.”
