Would go crazy over any q!phil hc's, but may I request some about phil's harem I mean qsmp server polycule?
OHOHOHOHO YOU'RE INDULGING MY STUPID SILLY HAREM. YESSS.
Previous qPhil Headcanons
SO ANYWAY. QPHIL AND HIS INNATE TALENT FOR PULLING BAD BITCHES ON ACCIDENT.
Reiterating initial mentions of this for context:
--He's married to the Goddess of Death (Kristin) and Missa (a reaper). He's also fuckbuddies with Fit (no one can look at their interactions & tell me there's no homo there) and Etoiles. Strictly fuckbuddies; Fit has something blooming with Pac, and Etoiles is aromantic. --Everyone who Knows(tm) about the polycule has turned calling it a harem into an inside joke they only reference when Phil either isn't around or isn't paying attention enough to be like WHAT. --In fact, it's unfolded into a sort of joke folklore around Phil made up by the islanders closest to him that he has this inexplicable charm to him that makes any man-attracted person weak in the knees. (Baghera totally started it. Cellbit, Foolish, & Fit perpetuated it & it spread from there) --All this fruity silliness in mind, I have no fucking clue what queer label I'd slap on Phil, if one at all. Part of me wants to claim him as pansexual bc I'm Pansexual So Therefore So Is My Cubito + the way he'd explain how he experiences romantic & sexual attraction is exactly what I described *my* exp as in high school and my friend was like "yeah that's pansexual." But I also feel like Phil's the kind of guy to purposely not define his sexuality & remain an enigma both as a "mind your business" & a "It's Funny To Not Elaborate" thing. (As of rn I'm rolling with "he's pansexual but in a font you've never seen before")
S O
Obv Mrs. Goddess of Death Kristin came first, she's been with him since long before Quesadilla Island. Strangely enough, she can't recall too much prior to the island just like Phil, but there's no way the Feds know she exists let alone know how to fuck up the memory of a deity. But yeah, she was his first & is his ONLY romantic dynamic within his weird polycule
She's an avid fan of Phil being his best unintentional whore self with them nice ass shoulders on display all the time and that accidental man magnet charm. Loves watching him pull bitches nonstop without even realizing. And loves watching him be a total fruity dork with his besties. She knows if Phil was forced to choose ONE person out of the polycule to be monogamous with forever, he'd pick her. She's not worried at all about his yaoi island adventures
Next came Fit. Hough, what a man. They WERE, until recently, strictly fwb. They fucked nasty behind that gym and I'll die on that hill. The way they talk to each other sometimes? Big boy?? FitMC people are watching?? They fucked behind that gym. Their fwb was called off as soon as Fit got serious with Pac though. Phil was totally chill with it & actively encouraged it. He loves seeing Fit so invested in the romance he's got blooming. They're still more than friends, not lovers, but a secret third thing, the sexual aspect was just removed from the equation. Truly the most QPR of the polycule
Then came Missa. Oh Missa. Their dynamic IS platonic like Phil has stated & restated countless times, but Missa has a (not yet brought to Phil's attention) massive romantic crush on him. He hasn't spoken up yet to keep their relationship from getting rocky at all. But tbh that prob won't happen. They're platonic in the Kiss The Homies way. So what if they make out sometimes and are husbands? So what if they go on adventures that could be considered dates by some? They aren't a romantic relationship, even if Missa secretly kinda wants to be.
And finally, aromantic king Etoiles joined the fray. He and Phil started out as friends and that has Barely changed if at all, but sparring matches get a little too homoerotic sometimes and neither of them can resist the other when they're popping off extra hard. Things have. Escalated a few times. If yknow what I mean. Of all Phil's harem members polycule partners, he & Etoiles have absolutely ZERO emotional investment in the Spicy(tm) things they do together. It's simply a very intimate way of showing each other their respect & admiration for the other. What they have going on is a "*spanks you* good game, let's hit the showers team" kinda deal. They're the type of mfs to finish in bed then shake hands like "gg." Casual sex is >>>> to these two, but it happens waaay less between them than it did Phil & Fit, Fitza was habitual. Codebreakers is a once in a while thing
Btw once Fitpac gets more stable together and whatnot, Fitza could potentially reignite with Pac's consent. That's the key to healthy poly, all parties are informed & consenting. Pac would be like. An honorary harem member. He & Phil would have absolutely 0 intimate relations, they're strictly friends in the most basic sense of the word. They just also fuck the same guy (& would totally talk about it together if alone)
Phil sometimes tries to gauge if Missa only likes men or if he likes women too. If he does, he's going to ask if he'd like to hear about his lord & savior, Big Woman(tm).
Etoiles has 100% asked Phil who fucks the best out of the polycule bc like everything else, it's a competition & he Must win, he Must have the best dick game. This amuses Phil very much
*incoherent but clearly passionate noises about how Phil hasn't done anything spicy with any of the polycule in a hot second because of Ender King Situation stress*
GOD he wants to open up to them about it so bad. Like yeah he did w Fit that one time but he didn't go into detail and hasn't said anything since and bc Phil is an idiot that feels guilty easily, he doesn't want to tell Fit more atm bc he doesn't want to dampen Fit's high spirits or take away his time with Pac
OK BUT CONSIDER: POLYCULE GROUP EFFORT TO GET THROUGH TO ENDER KING POSSESSED PHIL AND HELP HIM FIGHT OFF EK'S INFLUENCE. OUGH.
Phil attracted all four partners with his raw skill and talent btw. If you even care. Literally was just going about his business being himself and it bagged him three dudes in addition to the literal goddess he already had
Although his feelings are platonic, Phil is attracted to Missa because Missa is a) the other father of his children and b) such a genuine and sweet person. And funny, even if a lot of the times the reason he's funny is bc he's like 2 seconds from having a stroke over whatever shit he missed hitting the fan this time
Phil is attracted to Fit bc. Well. That's FitMC of 2b2t, baby. Raw skill and talent sees raw skill and talent. Fellow anarchist. Also muscles. And that razor sharp stare. Fit's just dreamy as hell ok, let a man drool a little
Phil is attracted to Etoiles the same way he's attracted to Fit, HOWEVER, the reasoning is different. Etoiles has raw skill and talent, but it's the way he wields it and demonstrates it that makes Phil wanna act up. Also Etoiles is fucking hilarious. Who can resist a good sense of humor? Those dramatics make Phil swoon

Happy b-day to my girl Rinoa. I wish I had fic or art ready to post today but I don't :(
All I will say is that writing in her perspective for an extended period of time, and therefore looking at her lines and behaviors over and over again, has just really made me appreciate Rinoa as a character.
A few things I love about her:
As the daughter of what we are led to believe are Galbadia's highest ranking general and one of the world's biggest celebrities, Rinoa is privileged. She comes from a position of power and wealth. She could have just lived a comfortable life but she chooses to use her knowledge and skills to help free a country from violent occupation. Doing so puts her at great personal risk, and although she may not fully understand how risky it is, it is extremely brave and righteous for her to do this. This is why I believe Rinoa is not Ultimecia - because at her core, she is someone who places her values over personal gain when she has power and influence. She can be possessed but I don't believe she corruptible (into Ultimecia, anyway).
On her bravery, we all know that Rinoa fears doing things alone. But many times in the game, she does things alone anyway. Bravery is not the absence of fear but the willingness to challenge it, and our girl challenges it all the time!
Further, she makes the active decision to rejoin the SeeDs after Irvine escorts her out of D-District prison. What I realized in writing my fic, which is an alternate timeline, is that Rinoa actually has no established reason to go to the missile base. But you can assign her to that party. And she will do it without complaint. She is risking her life, not to earn money, or to move her mission in Timber forward, or even to spend more time with Squall. She will go because she thinks it's the right thing to do, and because she wants to help Selphie, someone she has just met.
She gives people the benefit of the doubt. There is no denying that Squall is a huge jerk to her at times early game, but she is emotionally intelligent enough to realize that whatever he is projecting is not about her. And then she tries, over and over, to reach out to him. She is so patient. But also, she gives Deling the benefit of the doubt - they were trying to reason with him on the train, not even blackmail him or threaten him, but just have a conversation. She tries to not kill Edea TWICE. She tries to use the bangle to circumvent assassination and then tries to get the SeeDs to find another way to face her. She even returns to Esthar after they were hostile toward her. She believes in the good of people. Maybe that's being naive but if we were all as cynical as some other characters in this game, the world would completely fall apart.
Rinoa is always thinking. She is crafty, she comes up with interesting plans, and she can even be a bit of a schmoozer. Rinoa is only 17, and so some of this is not always executed in the best way; but I think she is extremely intelligent and creative. And, I mean, you GOTTA BE if you can teach your dog all those amazing tricks.
Don't you DARE call her a damsel in distress. She is just as much the hero of FFVIII as Squall is and YES I will die on this hill. Does she get into some pretty nasty situations? Yes. Are some of these situations caused by mistakes on her part? Absolutely. But this girl is far from helpless and goes all out to save Squall, her friends, and ALL OF TIME AND SPACE. She was willing to go to Edea by herself with a bangle that she had idea if it worked to help her friends. She was at peace with being locked away for probably the rest of her life if that meant keeping the world safe. She was willingly possessed by an evil sorceress for a second time after having a traumatic more-than-near-death experience the first time (she hadn't even experienced an Ellone dream before so imagine how scary this entire prospect was??? Like yes you need to lose your conciousness to some future bitch again and then you have to go into this other bitch's head in the past in this dreamscape you've never even been in and then yeah all of time is gonna collapse if/when you come to, you cool with that, Rinoa?). At the end of the game, she physically travels between dimensions/time/space/realities to find Squall and revive him, and then transport them back to their own reality which is obvious savior stuff. But she also saves Squall throughout the game by staying by his side, asking the right questions, listening to him, and giving him validation that, while he doesn't accept, he needs to hear. And oh yeah she fucks up Irvine to go get Squall out of prison. There's a reason they only call her "princess" once in the game - because she's NOT just a princess.
She cute as fuck js not just physically but also the things she says and her mannerisms. She's just so charming! No wonder Squall fell toss-myself-into-space in love with her! Me too tf
Tbh there are more reasons but this post is already longer than I thought it was going to be. Apparently I just have a lot of Rinoa feelings okay?! Okay.

AU thought: Nynaeve is born in Seanchan and raised from childhood as a damane
Immediate first thought (besides ‘why did you choose violence’) is that she’d probably be the best, still. She’s making it onto Tuon’s entourage. I am in pain thinking about it.
This is my AU, so I’m going to solve a personal mystery and say that her dad is Ajimbura & she’s from the Kaensada Hills. Let’s say her mom still died early from illness & dad still taught her how to hunt & track before she was tested. In fact, Ajimbura treated Nyneave as his son because he had seen her channeling at an unusually early age & was hoping declaring her his son could protect her from being made damane.
The Kaensada Hills are rural and unassimilated enough that this was not quite as useless an idea as it might seem, and let’s say they also had very functional ideas of gender roles- if someone does Man Things, they are A Man for all intents and purposes, or vice versa.
Spoiler: It doesn’t work, the sul’dam do eventually get around to testing even there and if there’s a saidar channeler, they’re gonna grab her. Nyneave becomes damane around 13. She still has that Talent for Healing, but because most Seanchan don’t want a damane working on them in that way, she’s only allowed to practice on other damane. It’s a Talent and not something that can be taught very well, which also dampens people’s enthusiasm about it since it’s not super replicable.
She’s still ridiculously powerful even with this somewhat problematic skill, though, and so she sees a lot of use in combat situations. Nyneave comes to Tuon’s attention when Nyneave’s sul’dam makes a judgement call & lets her bring one of Tuon’s favorite damane back from the brink of death after a combat injury. Tuon’s like ‘mine now’ and Nyneave joins the favorites squad.
Nyneave’s been with Tuon for ~6 years by the WH timeline. Once Ajimbura finds out where she is (since she’s higher-profile now that she’s with Tuon), he’s like ‘I must kill the Daughter of the Nine Moons’s father to avenge the loss of my son’ but her father is dead already (of ‘a bad wager’ in this timeline too) so he decides that as male captain of her bodyguard, Furyk Karede stands in loco parentis to Tuon, and therefore he must be killed.
After 3 failed revenge murder attempts, by the custom of his people, the debt rebounds upon Ajimbura and now he must become like Furyk Karede’s son and follow his trade.
This is the mechanism that Ajimbura’s people, distant descendants of the AoL Aiel, devised to stop blood feuds. If you try to revenge murder the same person three times & you can’t hack it, you have to join your enemy’s family instead and act in their interests. Most people don’t want to take that risk, or pick easier-to-kill enemies, so there’s a lot of trophy-hunting instead, kind of like how the Aiel have implemented complex prisoner of war rules so less people die.
So that’s why Ajimbura is Karede’s unhinged manservant in THIS universe. Still wish I knew why he’s there in canon!
Because I do not want Nyneave to suffer unduly, let’s say she comes with Tuon instead of Mylen (whose battlefield-medicine-descended-Healing is less impressive when compared to Nyneave’s Talent). Nyneave also represents Seanchan supremacy in a homegrown ‘we’re better than you’ way rather than a ‘we’ll brainwash you all’ way. Slightly different message, similar outcome.
She gets captured by our heroes at some point & basically has some of Alivia’s arc after that, but because she worked with Tuon and has insider info on her, she’s got more to do in Rand’s inner circle than just make people uncomfortable & lay out his outfit for the rest of his life. Actually, you know what, let’s full-circle this, the former Wisdom of Emond’s Field is Alivia Al’Meara & she’s the one who makes the call to uncollar Nyneave when she asks for it.
Also, Nyneave becomes friends with Aviendha because Avi meets her once and is like ‘forgive me but you’re the spitting image of my second-sister’s first-daughter’ (or whatever) and then they figure out that the Kaensada Hills tribes are also descended from AoL Aiel, and this connection becomes very important later on when the Kaensada Hills tribes strike out for independence in the aftermath of the entire Imperial family being murdered & the civil wars in mainland Seanchan.

Ok, the second part of my rambles or why hugging Knives should be considered a form of convention weapon and must be used as often as possible.
A little disclaimer: what I'm gonna to talk about is applied mostly to Stampede and manga Knives. Not so much to 98, because while, objectively speaking, there is no reason for it, I kind of have a feeling that other two would very like to punch him to a pulp. The guy has an incredibly punchable face.
Tumblr media
...Sorry, wrong picture.
Now, a question. Does Vash love Knives?
Yes, of course. Despite everything Knives did, Vash still consider him his brother and wants them to put away their difference.
Next question: Does Knives feel this love? Or, maybe, I'll paraphrase a bit: does he believe in it?
And here things become tricky. Because yeah, at some level Knives knows that Vash loves him. His little brother is a kind creature, after all, that's ready to share his heart with the whole world. He wants to save humans, wants to save Plants, why not to want to save Knives too, in this mix?
The problem is, Vash, bless his heart and everything, is a damn hypocrite. He gives promises that he isn't able to keep, runs from places to places doing essentially nothing and always, always, always, puts humans first.
So yeah, he loves Knives. Just as he loves his sisters, or maybe worms on this planet. As long as humans are safe, Vash is ready to feel sorry for them, or maybe even ask for forgiveness for everything humans put them through. They'll become better, one day.
And the worst part? Knives isn't exactly wrong in his assessment. Because Vash does put humans first, Stampede especially. And although a big part of the reason for that comes from his guilt complex and well, Knives, maybe you should have thought it a little better before putting it on your brother, but the fact stays: between a Plant and a human, Vash will instinctively choose a human.
Tumblr media
Now, let's talk about the aftermath of Tessla's case. Stampede very suspiciously omitted most part of it, showing only Knives' choice of Vash's memories (and keep in mind that the whole point of that showcase was to break Vash, so Knives' "confession" of his motivations can't be taken at face value) and I will die on the hill that in the second season we're going to get Knives' round of it, but for now, let's go with the manga.
Tumblr media
We know how it did go: while Vash had his emotional breakdown, Knives fell into coma. It isn't clear, did he faked his amnesia or not but even he didn't, the subconscious trauma still stayed.
And the first thing he saw after waking up? Vash and Rem, laughing together.
Think about this. Vash saw the extent of Knives shock, watching his brother being comatose for days. Even though he wasn't conscious, Vash had an affirmation that his twin shares his grief. Knives, though? He didn't have a chance to see Vash's resentment, desperation and anger. For him, his brother just... Brushed it off. Made a peace with it. And even if the wording was different, even if he was told something like "I understand if you're angry" - Knives already lost his affirmation. He had no chance of showing his anger, not when his twin was so calm about the matter and obviously decided to stay at humans side.
For Knives, Vash has already abandoned him for humans. Forgiveness is a thing that exist for sake of a victim, not a perpetrator, but Vash has already forgave theirs, therefore forcibly dragging Knives along before he even really started to proceed everything.
And so, Knives acted as he, with this mental block, was allowed to:
Tumblr media
... And you know the reason of the story.
And after that? Constant arguing about how they should forgive and accept humans. (For manga, it's after the Fall, but in Stampede it started already on the ship. I'm sure that Knives read Bible before, just like he watched war movies before in manga. But after Tessla, he started to see evil there). Open expressions of fury, fear and hate from somebody who is never bothered to even become a bit angry on their sisters' behalf. A gun in your face after you saved his life.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Vash's feeling are much more complicated than that. Alas, Knives doesn't have much chance to see that. From his point of view, Vash is ready to forgive humans everything, but Knives? He gets a gun and speeches how they all should live in peace. With a great plan mostly consisting of Plants forgivinig humans until they become better.
So, at some point Knives just... stops listening. He already knows what his brother thinks about him. It doesn't matter. Knives won't let Vash's hate stop his love for him. Gunshots, Vash's cries of anger, pain, fear - it all become a white noise that should be ignored.
Tumblr media
Ignore when they hurt you, just do your thing and come to them again and again, and one day they will listen to you? Ironically, but for most part, it's exactly how Knives tries to act with Vash. Well, in his own, a bit psychotic, version of things, with him not only waiting but also taking some actions. (Ok, a lot of actions.)
And it's incredible how all that cold and collected persona dissipates on 12 ep of Stampede, where Knives is left with nothing but a desperation to make his brother understand. Only for Vash, when Knives lays his heart bare, to reject him. Again.
Tumblr media
And Vash has his own reasons. Completely understandable reasons, I would say, because while he is a superhuman only in physical sense on things. He had his own anger, and pain, and fear, and inner struggle. Knives hurt him enormously and there is no wonder that Vash doesn't want to give up his stance. And he shouldn't, really. But...
Tumblr media
Knives isn't strong, at least, mentally. He created this illusion of being the older, the one in charge, to protect himself (in Stampede, this illusion starts a bit earlier, with him being the "perfect Independent" who for some reason should hide his powers and "weak" Vash, who is, by Rem's words, "perfect as he is") but in the end this made-up hierarchy harmed both him and Vash, locking them in their respective positions. And Knives was motivated by fear, he wanted protection, wanted Vash to stand up for him - something what Vash, who for so many years saw Knives as the strongest one, the one who decides, the one who must be defeated, wasn't capable to do and had no idea about. He had his own personal growth to do, and couldn't be the mentally senior figure Knives needed.
And that's why one day I going to write this fic about TriMax Vash finding himself in Stampede world. These idiots clearly need an older brother.
For Knives, Vash was the one who abandoned him, again, again and again. The one who blabbed about love and peace while aiming a gun at him. For over hundred years, there was only one case when Vash prioritized Knives over everything else, took his side clearly enough that there were no ways left for Knives to doubt it.
Tumblr media
And guess what? This single act snapped Knives out his frenzy better that all these bullets before that.
And I'm quite sure that Stampede plot could be quite shorter if upon that meeting five years after the Fall, Vash would confirmed that yes, he understood Knives' ire before confronting him over humans death. Like, the kid was one hug away from breaking down. Too bad that he never allowed himself acknowledge it.
So, the moral of the story: hug your Kniveses. Be cautious, though, because while Vashes bite, Kniveses... Let's say that they aren't very good for your extremities. Assert your dominance with care and don't force them to bottle up their anger, even unintentionally. If you do it right, everything will be fine.
... Well, maybe. Hope for the best, one day it surely will be alright.

howdy, world!
my name is second (although given my icon and general presence, i don’t mind being called bee). i am 25 and i use they/them pronouns. i’m mainly a hermitcraft fan (i main joe hills, a fact that will become immediately obvious if you follow this blog), although i’m also a big fan of empires smp, the life series/traffic smps, and am at my heart a technoblade main. i also watch a decent amount of vault hunters when it’s around.
my fics:
my ao3 is bee_4. the thing you’ve most likely heard of on there is either “the inner mechanism of a black box” or “this is about a stuffed bird”. if i could make you read one other thing on there, i would probably currently choose either “to convey a certain brilliance” or “cura te ipsum”, although if it’s on my ao3, as a general rule, i think it’s very good and you should read it.
#a bee fic is my fic tag. in it you will find a fairly consistent stream of ficlets because the ability to put whatever i want on tumblr is one i frequently abuse. there are a lot of these that aren’t currently on ao3, and may never be (as i tend to only transfer over my favorites). enjoy this access to my brain!
as a general rule, in addition to the above: you have my permission to do fanart or my fic, write a fic of my fic, write a fic using the concept of one of my fics or an au i’ve talked about, or in general transform my work however you see fit. we’re all writing fanfic here! my one request is that, if you are using my plot or au as i wrote it, you credit me somewhere, and that you never take my exact words and copy them. other than that, feel free to do as you will! (i’d also love if you tagged me in it so i can see it and fanboy about it, but this is not a required step, lol.)
some other common tags:
#answered: the tag i use on all of my asks. good to go through if you sent me an ask and want to see if i’ve answered it (although my askbox is often the place things go to die so don’t be offended if i haven’t, i’m at 1.8k asks at the moment i think haha i’m so sorry) or if you want to block it when i get on an answering spree. i’ll also tag asks with the name of the asker, if i’m provided one.
#stream liveblogging: the tag i use as a catch-all for silly liveblog things. good to block if you don’t want constant random insistent joe hills posting, lol.
#hermitcraft, #empires smp, #double life smp: the place to find my original content about a given series i’m watching! these are currently the ones i’m most likely to post about, although in general you can find original content for a particular creator or smp under what i think their most common tag is. this is not always an ACCURATE assessment, but what can you do.
#stuffed bird art: specific tag for fanart of stuffed bird. this tag largely exists because you all are insane and i love you and i ran out of characters in stuffed bird’s endnote to link all of it there.
#magical girl scar: this au is taking over my blog and i am going insane but also it’s very fun so it probably won’t stop taking over my blog. click this tag to see stuff for it.
in addition, i will do my best to tag original content with any trigger i have been asked to tag it with. however, i am often bad about both spoiler and trigger tags, as i personally have very wide and flexible boundaries and therefore can be bad about judging other people’s. let me know if i need one on something there isn’t one on and i’ll do my best to fix it. in addition, i do not guarantee i will tag anything i reblog. i make attempts for major spoiler tags or things i think need a tag that op didn’t put on there, but even that is very very spotty, and i don’t want people to assume i will tag to a level of consistency i don’t and get hurt, so i generally refuse as a rule to guarantee that. sorry!
anything else?
i don’t typically answer asks that are about discourse-laden topics. this includes stuff like shipping or dream or other things that are guaranteed to make at least one person mad. this is less because those topics make me upset (they don’t) and more because i hate getting in arguments on the internet, so if i actually do a discourse its normally because i’ve actually been really annoyed by something. otherwise i will politely pretend your question didn’t exist. (this does unfortunately include when you are not trying to discourse and are just sorta chatting about one of the topics i decide i don’t want to answer - i’m sorry! i promise i don’t care, i just am hyper-aware of the fact i have over five thousand follwers at this point.)
my queue is normally between two and three days behind the current day because i shove so much stuff in it. despite this, there is no consistency to how i decide if something goes in the queue or i straight-up reblog it. as a result there’s a pretty high amount of content just constantly on this blog. my current queue is at 36 posts a day but by god do i do more than that anyway. in addition my likes are from my main, as are my follows and replies, so it can be really hard to tell if i’m around sometimes, lol.
please don’t send me an ask advertising your thing unless i’m directly involved in it in some way (IE it’s based on one of my concepts or fan stuff from one of my things). it just makes me sorta uncomfortable and then i delete it because i don’t know whether or not to post it especially given that i don’t post that stuff from everyone, haha, so i end up posting none of it. similarly, don’t send me things asking for me to reblog your thing, i go through the tag and reblog low-note stuff a lot but the moment i’m asked to i get really uncomfortable. the one exception to this is if you know me outside of tumblr and we’re buddies in which case i don’t care.
uhhhh... beyond that, if any really common faq question comes up, i’ll try to put it here!
as always, thanks for enjoying my silly little brainspace!

"My slutty pirate outfit doesn't fit anymore." That's how she greets him as she strides into the lab--in her civilian clothes, the provocative costume that's been her staple since 1989 slung over her arm. "I know the new boss isn't going to let us have the night off without a fight, but I'd like the universe to cut me a little bit of slack."
It's less about the costume and more about the change. And the fact the team spent yesterday fighting off the ghosts of dead classmates, which is... fairly brand for October, somehow.
Tess has been arguing with Erik all day, and it's not hard for Hank to figure out why. It's textbook: she feels like she's losing control of her life, and therefore, she's digging her heels in and being stubborn over something that can be controlled. Like a night out, or cheap Halloween decorations. As for their leader, Magneto--is Magneto, and Tess choosing a tacky ghost windsock as the hill on which she's willing to die doesn't bode well for the future.
"Morph and I found it with the old Halloween stuff in the attic." She tosses the outfit--and a couple of old souvenir Halloween shirts onto an unused lab table and pulls up a chair for herself. Then she glances down and picks at a dust bunny stuck to her shirt. "Do you remember how hard we had to fight the Professor to get that Sleepy Hollow trip?"
(Tess. Tess fought him for the Sleepy Hollow trip.)
"I kept freaking out the horse the 'headless' guy was riding." So they bailed on the hayride, and Hank set up somewhere atmospheric to read from the copy of Washington Irving he'd brought with him. She smiles fondly at the memory, flicking the dust bunny to his pristine floor. "You had a bigger audience than anyone by the time you were done."
Her eyes are dark and thoughtful as she watches him swing from the rafters.
"I could get through to the Professor about things like that. Why it all matters and how it keeps us going when things get--" She bares her teeth for a moment, then shakes her head. "When they get the way they get. But I don't know how to make Erik see it."
[Forgive some of the language but it's Provocative Halloween Costume Talk and it's 1997.)
"You surely aren't telling me that Tess McKay, Provocative Privateer of the Ponderous Pools of Westchester, is no longer a fixture of our fair shores?" Hank glances up from his own costume - a startlingly accurate Hamlet outfit that he's patching a few errant holes and frills in, since it hasn't quite survived the interim year unscathed - and smiles at Tess as she strides into the lab with her usual confidence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmmm. Where's his red yarn . . . ah!
"Oh, I remember quite completely. The Professor was very insistent that we couldn't blow our cover, that it simply wasn't wise to have that many mutants - including those of the physically mutated persuasion - out and about, even on Halloween. And you were very insistent right back, if I recall correctly."
Tumblr media
Hank does recall correctly. (Of course he does.)
And, naturally, that perfect recall extends to Washington Irving, the self-same author of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. How could it not? Even as he flips up onto the ceiling and clambers away from Tess to fetch his red yarn, the rafters clanging with each self-assured clasp of his feet to their reinforced structure, he doesn't lose a beat.
Tumblr media
"“All these, however, were mere terrors of the night, phantoms of the mind that walk in darkness; and though he had seen many spectres in his time, and been more than once beset by Satan in diverse shapes, in his lonely pre-ambulations, yet daylight put an end to all these evils; and he would have passed a pleasant life of it, in spite of the devil and all his works, if his path had not been crossed by a being that causes more perplexity to mortal man than ghosts, goblins, and the whole race of witches put together, and that was - a woman.”
He has a big, teasing grin on his face as he regards Tess, his meaning and his joke plain. What kind of woman could possibly perplex man more than ghost, goblin or witch, hmmmm?
Tumblr media
But, this is, despite initial appearances, a serious conversation, and his face mellows for a moment. He can definitely understand Tess' frustration, even as he perceives why Erik is having such a hard time letting them all relax. In amongst all the consternation about his trustworthiness, there's been little time to talk about his leadership style, and the fact that it could use a little work.
Obvious, in retrospect, when one considers his previous attempts to lead a force against the X-Men have gone - not well, but a fact easily lost in the shuffle. Magneto is excellent at charismatic charges against the enemy, logistics, battle tactics, but morale was never his strong suit, was it? How best to rectify . . . ah!
"Just a moment, I think I might . . ."
Tumblr media
With a little puff of dust, Hank fishes a rather worn photo album out of a storage container underneath one of his many lab desks, and throws it with expert accuracy, the book opening along its spine and presenting its secrets to Tess.
'Inaugural X-Men Halloween Party, 1983.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"For whatever reason, I appear to have misplaced Jean and Warren's pictures, I shall have to go rifling through my other albums for completion's sake, but, if you flick over the page . . ."
Tumblr media
"Perhaps a reminder for Erik, that even the Professor was not above having a little bit of fun every now and then, might convince him that there is worth in the activity. He need not participate, but, if the Professor was able to convince Scott to let go for one night and simply dress up and have fun, I believe you and I are capable of the same, Tess."

2, 5, 6, 25, 46 for the Snape asks!

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on
I won't necessarily ~die~ on this hill lmao since it's a headcanon and therefore something that's personal to ME but not necessarily one i expect everyone else to conform to, but i think out of all the snape hcs i think up, i'm most loyal/consistent to the one with him being catholic (at the very least, he had grown up as one, it doesn't really matter if he's lapsed as an adult). for me it fits so perfectly with how he is in canon and a lot of how he thinks and acts. there's just so much material to build off of it and is a fun one to explore.
another one is probably him being good friends with the malfoys + being draco's godfather. sue me, i love a good found family trope. lol. the malfoys just work so well with severus, and they're all such fun characters besides.
also am very partial to the “tobias and eileen were human and therefore messy” trope and had done their best with their marriage and with severus. not a big fan of the hc that tobias was black-and-white abusive etc as it can get very boring. i’d rather explore the depths of their characters and how they got to where they were in canon.
5-6. Best and worst personality trait
already answered here but here's another one:
one of severus' better personality traits was that he was very strategic and a lot of that stemmed from a deep sense of self-awareness. he knew his own strengths and weaknesses and had the uncanny ability to disconnect from his own feelings to see what the most optimal outcome would be depending on the variables he was working with. it was what made him an effective spy and a very dangerous person to meet as an enemy.
one of his worse traits was he was highly suspicious of everyone and their motives. he believed as a default that everyone expected something from him, and he couldn’t accept when people would do things for him ‘just because’. he would always be obligated to repay them in some way. he didn’t like owing people, especially when it came to favors. he preferred being on equal footing with people if he could help it, otherwise he would just not interact.
25. 3 things they'd want to take with them if they were dropped off in the middle of nowhere
i suppose this would come with a condition that his wand wouldn’t be allowed, or any other magical object, so i would think he would choose to bring a knife, rope, and a mirror (for fire starting purposes and also for signaling). the man was half-muggle and grew up in the sticks. he would survive.
46. The person they most admire
also already answered, but i like to think that at some point he grew to admire harry. not as a student, heaven forbid, but as someone who was brave and loyal beyond measure, no matter that he was a child and likely scared to death. i feel like he saw lily - his intrepid friend - in harry more times than he could count, and he both loathed and reveled in the recognition. i sometimes wonder what emotions severus felt when he saw harry in the shrieking shack. despair that the boy was there, still playing his part in the elaborate game spun between albus and riddle? disdain at the poetic justice of it all? or relief, since he could still do potter one final thing, give him one more piece of the puzzle to do with it what he would, and just the tiniest bit of gratitude that he wouldn’t have to die alone?

12 and 25 for ask thingy <3
from: choose violence ask game
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
With Harry Potter, this is hard to answer because all my favourite characters have a fairly decent amount of fans, especially in fandom spaces (or maybe it's my own hyper-curated fandom experience talking...), even though they might not be loved by casual readers/watchers. I'm going to say Dumbledore, just because, in my opinion, he gets a disproportionate amount of hatred in the fandom, with people who warp his character so much they make him out to be the villain. He's a very flawed human being, but he's meant to be good. He's meant to be compassionate. He's no more ruthless than, say, Hermione is; the difference between these two is in their ages, lived experiences, and responsibilities. Dumbledore is a character meant to show the cost of wearing the crown, that power is best wielded by those who do not want it, and that those who recognize their shortcomings (i.e. being power-hungry) must continuously work to keep themselves in check. We are supposed to see him as grey by the end of the series, we are supposed to recognize his failures and his humanity, but he's never not been a good, compassionate person or at least someone trying to do better. The only thing he isn't is selfish or needlessly cruel. This is the hill I'll die on. To me, he's one of the series's best-written characters (before the FB movies, at least).
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
so. fucking. many. I can't list them all, I'll just say that a good... 80% of the time when someone says “x is problematic” they're not applying basic critical thinking skills/are deliberately taking things out of context. The other day I saw someone complaining about how problematic it is that in GoF Hermione is slandered by Rita Skeeter in the press, and no adults intervene... My dude, that's the whole point. The author was making a point about how insidious the tabloids are, especially in the UK and how there is really nothing anyone can do because of a) their reach and b) how desensitized everyone is (even Mrs Weasley believes them and she's not written to be a bad person; making her gullible and a little prejudiced makes her human). Or how problematic the portrayal of characters like Fleur and Cho is... but. like. Is it really that uncommon for teenage girls like Ginny and Hermione to dislike another, prettier girl? Before #girlpower was cool was it that uncommon for there to be competition? Is it unheard of for a mother-in-law to hate her future daughter-in-law, even for stupid reasons? I think it makes them more human, more well-rounded and therefore better characters.

I need to say this-
I hope the Israeli government knows that even if they (impossibly) succeed in wiping out the Palestinians and taking control of Gaza and therefore the whole of Palestine completely, the world will never accept them.
Do they think that the people of the world will just let them forget this? That they'll just be able to move past the fact that they've committed one of the worst massacres in history, as this is how they will go down, this is how they will be remembered in the history books since this is the hill they're choosing to die on. Do they think that they will then be able to live peacefully on the Holy Land, that they stole, that they've filled with the blood of innocents and screams of children and crying of mothers and babies. That they'll just be able to establish a State of Israel of Jews then, completely ignoring the fact that they've slaughtered millions of innocent former occupants of that State?
If so, then they're dead wrong. Cowardly leaders of the major countries of the world like the UK and US may blabber empty words like, "We stand with Israel.." all they want but those words mean nothing when the people of their countries do not agree with them and have vehemently shown so, so they have no right to utter such lies.
And the UN is also a complete joke, since one vote against twelve other votes is enough to veto a major decision.
I just.. My heart hurts. Just the whole week has been a pain listening to the constant news of bombardment of settlements and senseless deaths and the world. Just. Goes. On. Does not care. I want to scream.
Lying awake this morning thinking what a privilege it is to wake up to a peaceful sunrise while children on the other side of the world wake up half in wonder and half in despair to yet another day filled with senseless violence and death, year after year. This war has been going on since before we were even born. And it has gone on long enough.
If you have a platform on any social media sites, then please please speak up about this. And if you have the means to donate or attend protests in your area, please do so. It's the least you can do. If you have an ounce of humanity, do not look away. Do not let the oppressors get away with this, do not let them just do as they please. This is not a fandom issue or a show or a book, where you keep your opinion to yourself or say that all opinions are valid. Know that if you stay silent or adopt a 'neutral' stance, you are complicit in genocide. You are saying that you are okay with the murder of children and innocents.

Here we go, folks. We already know that Black Sails is a story about the very nature of stories (among other predominant themes) and that the creators chose to leave the ending “ambiguous”, a “choose your own adventure” type of deal. But . . . did they, really?
Strap in, folks, because either the writers painted themselves into a corner or they actually DID choose a concrete ending, whether they tell us so or not.
Some thoughts on Flint’s “origin story” and how and when it’s presented:
Okay, so even in season 2 episode 9, we already know that the “official” Treasure Island death for Flint is bullshit. I didn’t catch this till rewatch number three, but when James is telling Miranda about the origin for his name, he tells her about “Mr. Flint” and says that the last thing Mr. Flint said to his grandfather (McGraw, presumably, as the creators CHOSE McGraw to be James’s actual family name, this was a creation of the show) was to fetch some more rum, and when his grandfather returned, Mr. Flint had vanished.
So let’s examine this, shall we? First, that’s not a literal death, that’s a disappearance or a “conjuring”, a trick of the mind, or a ghost. Nothing about this seems corporeal.
But that’s all REALLY familiar, right? Where have we heard those “dying” words before? Let’s trot back over to the text, shall we?
In Treasure Island, Captain Flint’s last words are . . .
“Fetch aft the rum, Darby McGraw.”
Wait just a sec . . . is James foretelling his final words 20 years or so before he says them or is there something else going on?
Is Treasure Island, meta-textually, the source material for Black Sails or is, at least in the world in which our characters exist, Black Sails the source material for Treasure Island?
The way we leave things at the end of the series, I’d argue for the latter. In THIS world, the world in which Flint wages war for lost love and to bring a voice to the voiceless, THIS story, shall the good man teach his son . . . sorry, I’m digressing . . . lays the groundwork for Treasure Island, therefore, Treasure Island is the fiction and Black Sails is the truth.
This is a story about stories, after all.
So jumping back to “Mr. Flint”, “Fetch aft the rum, Darby McGraw”, in the context of Black Sails, is Mr. Flint, NOT Captain Flint. And if this is a story, who else knows it? The only person we witness hearing that story is Miranda, and she’s long dead. That leaves James, himself. Since dead men don’t go around telling tales about their own demise, James is definitely still alive to tell the tale. And since that was literally a story about a disappearance, it is very likely James’s chosen story to release “Captain Flint” back into the sea.
And if you argue, well, perhaps he told Silver, we just didn’t see it, I would remind you that’s not how stories work. Perhaps in reality, I can assume information has been shared, but in a storytelling medium, if we haven’t seen it shared, it hasn’t been . . . at least, not in the timeframe in which the story is told. Not before Skeleton Island, that is. Not before a scattering of birds got us all theorizing in the worst possible ways.
If Silver knows the “Mr. Flint” story, he learned about it later from the only person alive to tell it . . . James, himself. Keep in mind, James and Miranda had been living in exile together for 10 years before he tells Miranda that story. She was in his life when he chose the name and he still didn’t tell her. Not until he was contemplating the figurative end of Captain Flint. If Silver has been told this story, that would stand to reason that Silver and James and, likely, Thomas, came up with the “end of Flint” together.
They’re off growing prize-winning produce somewhere no man has ever been troubled by the sea.
This is now my head canon. I will die on this hill.

Thoughts of the S3 Polin? I love them and I'm so excited
i'm clearing out this inbox of mine... and i haven't properly ranted about this in a while, so... yeah. So if you're excited about S3 and don't want to hear anything negative, this may not be the post for you. (I'd classify it as bittersweet, maybe.)
I still HATE the idea of Polin being S3. I hated it when it was rumored, I hated it when it was announced, and even if I've now accepted that it's happening, I still think it was a TERRIBLE decision and actively ruins some of the elements of Polin I love the most (Namely: two characters growing up individually until they're in the right time and space to fall in love and grow together; the spinster and the bachelor; Penelope being successful for a DECADE at LW before being ready to move on; Colin enjoying his travels but being ready to settle down.)
But here we are.
Ignoring the past two weeks, I've been pretty pessimistic about S3. For me, in order to LOVE a romance I need to LOVE both individual characters. I can still like and enjoy a romance if that isn't the case, but with Polin - a book ship that is one of my all time favorites - I had high expectations in S1. My expectations post-S2 were pretty much on the floor because Show!Pen and Show!Colin - while not terrible characters in any way - are not MY characters, or at least not the ones I would die on a hill defending. In addition, while I do not care about plot in the slightest (and therefore do not care about the - frankly, sparse - RMB plot being done away with) I DO care about vibes and keeping characters in character. I love fic, obviously, but I love IN CHARACTER fic... and the show is wildly OOC fic right now. Not my cup of tea. So... really, in the end, I'm just here to support Nicola and Newts. I have always believed that S3 would be wildly popular, eaten up by the casual audience, and generally well-loved... I just felt that S3 wouldn't be my all time favorite season with my all time favorite couple as Show!Polin had the potential to be (especially if it had been S4 and had gone through with the actual slowburn, individual character development route).
Now, ever since TUDUM and some of the interviews that have come out... I wouldn't say I'm cautiously optimistic, but I am choosing to have more of an open mind and be open to the possibility that I might enjoy the main romance without having to turn my brain off. I know there are probably going to be things I dislike/despise (jealous/possessive Colin, Pen not apologizing to Marina, Marina dying, an overemphasis on the sex and not enough on the friendship, Colin's costuming, etc. who knows what else) but I know I will enjoy watching Nicola and Newts play these characters on my screen (the stills had me giddy!)
More importantly, while I try not to read TOO much into interviews, everything Nicola and Newts have said about the season so far does give me hope about Penelope and Colin as individuals. Again, I don't care about the plot. The quotes? Are fun! I'm definitely really happy about "you're my mess" and any other book quotes/scenes were get. But hearing Nicola talk about how Penelope needs to grow up, how she's terrible with men, how she's made mistakes.... hearing Newts talk about how S3 is basically a different Colin... THAT is what gives me hope. Because for me, I am always drawn to character-driven romances but it's hard to be invested in that romance if you're not invested in the characters. And again while Show!Pen and Show!Colin are fine, I really miss their book characters and hearing that they both might be GROWING into their book selves (especially Colin, imo, bc Show!Pen just needs to grow in general and I'll be happy whereas I really didn't like the writing for S2 Colin) does, actually, get me a little excited.
But yeah, I'm still here. I'll watch. I'll keep an open mind because Nicola and Newts clearly care about these characters and the romance and I do appreciate that and at the end of the day, it's an adaptation of the show and if I hate it (wouldn't be the first time!), I'll always have the book.

give the paddington bear look a chance 🥺
It's not something I like about myself, my reaction to this hat; I am generally a live and let live sort of person esp when it comes to matters of appearance, which are all entirely subjective, and which therefore no one can have the final word on, bc everyone will like different things, and that is good and ok and healthy
But this
This is jarring, so weirdly deeply incongruous with who Olivia Benson is as a person, a character, and I am just fucked up enough from this morning's surgery to die on any random hill I choose and apparently this is the hill I've chosen
It doesn't suit her, and indeed the baggage that comes with that hat and the reasons why a person might choose that specific hat on purpose are so at odds with Olivia's perspective and general outlook that I find myself repeatedly asking is this a joke? How would that hat have even wound up in her hands? Maybe Noah? Listen I know she loves that kid but. Yikes.
I suppose in the end I must concede to my own internal code of morals which insists that anything can be cute and anyone can wear anything they want and there are no rules and my personal preferences aren't and shouldn't be a factor in other people's sartorial choices.
But from a "someone picked that hat out and decided it worked for that character" standpoint I can't concede the logic of that choice no LMAO

What DnD Class would the Members of the Scooby Gang fall Into
A follow up to my last post This ended up being so much longer than I initially anticipated lol
Fred Jones: Artificer An extremely underrated class in my opinion. Also, not the one that I think most people think of for a leader. But also, all of his traps. All of his ingenuity working with only the things he has around him to catch the bad guy. I don't really know anything about any of the artificer subclasses besides Battle Smith, which looking at a brief overview of the other options is probably the one I'd give him. He's always more likely to build a trap then just confront and fight the bad guy. Leading into how though Battle Smith is good in a fight, it also can be played as a heavily defensive character. Armorer is just a tad too defensive for Fred as far as I'm concerned. He needs to also have that little confrontational, not totally support edge. Being able to play into both defense and offense is also great for a leader. Plus, he fucking loves his car, like one might love their steel defender that can look like anything the artificer chooses (to be blunt, the mystery machine is a built-in steel defender, right there)
Daphne Blake: Multiclass in Monk and Rogue* For monk, it's canon that Daphne knows martial arts and is decent in a physical confrontation. Not to mention I swear she's used an improvised weapon before, which just screams monk. If my memory serves, she's level-headed and always prepared (even if that preparedness fails a lot of the time. That being said, being prepared and actually on top of using those things are very different. Take it from someone who learned that the moderately hard way (no one died, only one person got kidnapped, everything could've gone a lot worse. So, I count the years of learning as a net positive :))). I will die on the hill that she somehow stole Mary Poppins' bag, a Bag of Holding no doubt. Speaking of stealing, she evidentially multiclassed as a rogue. Again, just her general preparedness. In addition to her being well connected. She sure as shit has the noble background. And what are rich nobles? Corrupt as fuck! It might all just be white collar crimes that they can bribe their way out of, but it's still crime <3**. What else is crime? Anything a rogue is involved in. She's not the most conventional rogue, but she is charming and can be quite good at a makeover or a little deceit***. She could be a bard in this sense, but she lacks the camp to truly fit, in my opinion. She's just not hamming it up enough. Also, not the most musical. I'm sure she's been shown to play, but she gives me 'only learned an instrument because her parents/school told her to'. Therefore, rogue. Apparently, I have a lot more thoughts about Daphne than Fred lol. Funny when you consider the types of characters I like to/end up playing...i.e. himbos. Or himbo adjacent. Regardless, this isn't about that, this is about what subclasses Daphne would take. For Monk, Way of the Open Hand. It's classic and simple, but it feels fitting as the others seem too flashy or too secretive. Daphne, for a rogue multiclass, feels very straightforward. She's not going to dance around you and use a lot of deception in a fight. If you go head on with her it'll be face to face. On the rogue side, the assassin subclass. Again, it's not so flashy like the swashbuckler or so secretive like the phantom, it's a very straightforward and no-nonsense subclass. It gets the job done. And Daphne doesn't really fuck around if I remember right. Her head may be a bit in the clouds, but once she puts so focus in... (I'm second guessing all of this. But that might just be the caffeine)
Velma Dinkley: Wizard If you thought I was going to say anything else, no. I love her, don't get me wrong. But she's a squishy little nerd, better suited for the research and behind the scenes kind of stuff. This feels just so self-explanatory that I don't know what else to say. As for her subclass, the School of Divination seems to fit perfectly with how she sums up each episode and each mystery with a play-by-play of everything. Her reasoning is always spot on. Again, it's very simple, but the role seems to have been made perfectly for her.
Norville "Shaggy" Rogers****: Barbarian Hear me out, he's mostly a coward who runs away. But he has his moments of bravery that remind me of the temporary rages that barbarians can go into. He's an odd barbarian, sure, but think of Gorgug from Dimension 20. He too was a very non-barbarian character playing a barbarian. Shaggy could never maintain his bravery and confidence, but he doesn't need to. As long as he becomes that way when it's needed most, he's golden. Whether a bribe was involved or not. Subclass-wise, one might think Path of the Beast or Path of the Totem Warrior because of Scooby, But no. We'll get to Scooby later. Shaggy, to go with his unpredictability when he actually illustrates some presence of a spine, he gives me Path of Wild Magic vibes. One truly doesn't know what will happen or when his courage will fail him.
Scoobert Doobert: Druid It's just there, in front of our faces, a druid who's always in beast form. As well as he has a protective streak. I don't think that's specific to druids, but it doesn't contribute to him playing a class that, at least the way I've played it***** and seen it played, leans away from fighting and towards support. Am I just stereotyping him cause he's a literal talking dog? Yes. His subclass is Circle of the Shepard. It's also a subclass that leans heavily into being support, but not a healer. Scooby has also been seen in some episodes calling upon new friends and allies to fuck up the bad guy. Not to mention but he can rely on fucking Scrappy Doo if he needs to (that little punk is just a straight Fighter and I don't take constructive criticism). His relationship with Scrappy Doo also leans into his protective streak, where while he can rely on Scrappy, he won't out of the urge to protect his nephew. Like a herd dog. This is such loose reasoning, regardless it is what it is.
*I'm up in the air about which one she started as, though honestly leaning towards rogue **This whole tangent makes me feel the same way I did when I read a review of 'Before the Devil Breaks You' by Libba Bray and the reviewer wrote something to the tune of: I didn't expect the series to get so political. The author didn't need to shoehorn in her beliefs. As if it's not a well-researched historical fiction book that dealt with eugenics and abuse and anarchy from the first book...but I also probably shouldn't judge as this reviewer and I were evidentially reading the series with two different perspectives and focuses. Politics doesn't need to be in everything, but it certainly is in, what I'd argue as, the majority of things whether we like it or not ***Honestly, all the girly girl stereotypes in media definitely give at least rogue multiclass. I only partially can decern why ****My beloved *****Please understand I've only ever played it once...in a pathfinder campaign...two sessions of a pathfinder campaign...I am about as far as an expert on the class as one can be while still having played it. So, take everything I say with a grain of salt. Pathfinder druids have a lot of healing and support abilities, that's what I know Oh, and the main villain of a campaign I dm'd was a knock off Circle of Spores Druid (I didn't have access to that content on dndbeyond and was in a time rush or something because I didn't just make him like I do every other character i.e. not on dndbeyond. I just use the site as reference)

Hey! Just saw this so sorry for the late response but wanted to respond. I am the “Unpopular Opinions” Person btw
OBVIOUSLY all the respect is meant. You are a genius <3 love your work, this is just some commentary
- Brennan IS a worse person than Killian because Killian really… doesn’t have THAT much agency in his life. Idk maybe I’m being too soft on him but I’ve always emphasized w/ children who make bad/objectively ambiguous decisions as the result of a turbulent life. Therefore, where Killian and Brennan made the SAME level of bad choices, Killian was genuinely a good person who was just trying to be a teenager/live his life in this “Fish out of Water” scenario he was put in. Brennan, meanwhile, came off like he had A LOT more agency and… strength, so to speak, not only in his own life but who he was in general. Therefore it’s a lot harder to excuse him for the stupid shit he puts himself in (like involving himself w/ the Principal’s son AND getting drawn into the bad/rebellious crowd, etc.). Therefore, Brennan is a worse person because generally those people (the reckless people who know they can make different, better choices and CHOOSE NOT TO), don’t tend to make the BEST decisions for their loved ones as well. Like I could see Brennan pulling some real dick behavior and causing shit for the people he cares for. Meanwhile, Killian? I highly doubt it. It’s the difference between “all bark but no bite” (Killian) and vice versa. One is just better.
- I agree on that! I’m just saying that IRL, the friends that stick will stick around. No amount of distance can TRULY crush any friendship. No doubt. Meanwhile… him relying on his friends as his family? Idk. There’s a difference between “My friends are my family” and “my friends can replace my family.” One is a MASSIVE cope and the other is just having close platonic/non-traditional family relationships. I still say Ireland would’ve given him time to grieve, properly, and become a more stable/stronger person. Just because something is harder to do doesn’t mean it’s the wrong choice.
- They are healthier!! You’re so right. And yeah, Staz and Ethan are similar but not the same people BUT… Will ALWAYS gave me the wrong vibes. I don’t vibe w/ hypocrites, and he is a MASSIVE one, considering him and Jude are EXTREMELY alike (Will just have the advantage of not having a horrible relationship w/ his Mother, otherwise I GUARANTEE he would’ve made similar if not the same choices). HOWEVER, the dynamics are EERILY similar. Two soft boys from subtly troubled homes change the perspective of two much more damaged, aggressive boys? Yeah, apologies if this wasn’t the correct read in the slightest, but both couples sort of gave me those vibes tbh. Although not ENTIRELY, clearly, as they are both complex enough to not be carbon copies (I realized this might’ve been insulting and so sorry if it is. I’m not trying to say that at all, they just follow the same TROPES.)
- You were an EXCELLENT writer (I mean your characters than were ten times more complex than mine are NOW), I just think the plot needed the characters to do what it needed them to do and there wasn’t a lot of time for diversions. Also, it really isn’t your fault if they were “a nightmare.” Hollywood/etc. LOVES the dysfunctional friendships. Just look at Riverdale! White Lotus (if you need a more updated example)! Gossip Girl! Literally any superhero movie. It’s just more fun for friends to sort of hate each others guts, unfortunately. ESPECIALLY in Young Adult media. Benji is still a bad friend to Ethan and Gideon tho… I will DIE on this hill (plus Sonnet and Ethan are the platonic soulmates we never got to see).
And that’s it! Thank you so much for your time!! I hope I never veered into disrespectful or rude while writing this. I feel like I did at multiple points so if I have, I am extremely sorry, clearly not my intention. I have a HUGE amount of respect to you and obviously, these are tour books, I just was curious to see if you would hate these tbh. All the love <3 Have a great day/evening!!!!
Cheers :)
This was super respectfully worded and I really appreciate the perspective! As the writer, it's sometimes hard for me to imagine how things can be interpreted differently than I intend, so I appreciate these kinds of honest perspectives. It gives me a lot to consider when writing in the future! Thanks for sharing! :)

the thing that really fucking pisses me off about Whipping Girl is the same shit as transmisics now pretending that they always respected gendernonconforming AFAB people Back in The Day™ and how it's so sad that "girls can't just be tomboys anymore" as though they ever fucking let us be comfortable the way we were instead of forcing femininty on us every chance they got and literally abusing us for not performing femininity to their standards.
What do these two things have to do with eachother you ask??? Julia Serano's insistance that people who are feminine are always the most oppressed every single time, including cis women.
She literally argues that butch women have more social standing and receive less abuse than women who are traditionally feminine and wear makeup and dresses the way society wants them to.
She literally fucking argues that femininity is the thing you get oppressed for, misogyny has nothing at all to do with sex, nope, if you're a person with a uterus as long as you dress "masculinely" well now actually you're privileged over people who dress "femininely", no matter what.
Like I don't know why it took me so long to figure out why she choose to make this absurd fuckign argument over every other possible hill she could choose to die on, then I realized that this is her attempt to decouple misogyny from sex entirely.
Like she literally thinks that butch cis women are treated better than cis women who do adhere to society's expectations of femininity. She's not even just fucking talking about how butch cis women might be privileged over feminine trans women, she's explicitly arguing that butch cis women are privileged over traditionally feminine cis women.
She literally thinks that all femininity is socially demonized and hated by virtue of being feminine. She thinks all forms of masculinity are heralded as powerful and are respected no matter what.
So on one hand we have cis transmisics claiming that, actually, they've totally always respected tomboys. Tomboys were never ever ever abused or harassed or degraded or told something was wrong with them for not being feminine. Not according to these people who are literally just fucking lying to defend their hatred of AFAB trans people by pretending it's actually concern.
And then on the other hand you have a transmisic trans woman who thinks nonbinary people aren't real and the white western gender binary only exists because it's right (not because of transmisia or racism or colonization or anything like that, no, no don't be ridiculous /s) who thinks.......that tomboys were never ever ever abused or harassed or degraded or told something was wrong with them for not being feminine. Because she's decided that actually, masculinity is always revered and femininity is always demonized, because she's decided that her personal experiences are universal and apply to everyone, everywhere, despite the fact that it's demonstrably false, and she would know this if she'd bothered to speak to literally anyone with different experienced before she published her fucking book where she pretends her experiences are universal across the board.
Like I'm sorry I just cannot get over how fucking absurd this is. She literally thinks butch women are treated better than socially-acceptable feminine women are. All because she couldn't think of any other fucking way to argue that misogyny is real and it affects trans women too except to fucking divorce misogyny from sex-based oppression and instead act like it's only attacking femininity and nothing else, therefore cis women who are gendernonconforming are always privileged over traditionally feminine cis women.
The next person who claims AFAB people who are not feminine are treated better and are privileged over AFAB people who are feminine, or claims that society has always adored and loved and cherished AFAB people who are gendernonconforming is going to get launched into the heaviside layer so they can get eaten by amoeba dragons.
You cannot fucking pretend that misogyny is completely and utterly divorced from sex-based oppression and then claim you have critical thinking skills. You cannot fucking pretend that misogyny is only used to attack femininity and uphold masculinity and nothing else at all and claim you have critical thinking skills.
You cannot claim that your experiences with misogyny and transmisia as a white binary trans woman with enough money to go to collage who thinks nonbinary people aren't real are universal and apply to literally everyone on the planet no matter what and then claim to have critical thinking skills.
