saw you tag benevolent sexism as a trigger warning on one of your pics, was wondering if you could explain what that is? as compared to just regular sexism
Benevolent sexism is the same as any other type of sexism. As in, it's still very much sexism. But there is a small fundamental difference that separates it from most sexism.
Most sexism is based on "negative" feelings - such as (men are stronger than women; therefore, men are better) or (women are hormonal and emotional; therefore incapable of intellectual thought) or (women are weak and only good for birthing children; therefore, they shouldn't do anything else), etc... you know the gist...
But benevolent sexism is more based on "positive" feelings - such as (women are cute, adorable, lovely creatures; therefore, men should cherish them).
And while that's fine and all, what makes it sexist is that those thoughts are generally rooted in other thoughts that still inspire female inferiority to men - such as (women are soft, small, weak creatures; therefore, in need of a man's protection or help) or (women are pretty and dainty little things; therefore, they shouldn't do certain things or have certain jobs)
It's still sexism at its finest, but instead of having undertones of hatred toward women, it has these over-protective and overbearing justifications.
It also applies when people judge a woman's worth strictly by how good a wife, girlfriend, or mother she is - instead of how good she is at her job or in any other aspect of her life.
This is all based on sexism toward women, but it obviously works both ways.
Such as judging a man strictly on how good a provider he is, how talented he is in sports, how much he works out, whether he's likely to win in a fight... etc...
And notions such as (men are strong; therefore, they should take all the hard labor and fight our wars) or even (men are tough; therefore, they shouldn't cry) and (men are capable: therefore, they shouldn't waste their potential doing girly things)
In the fic you're referencing, there was a character (Dabi) who spoke about both sides, both women and men.
“Most girls are better survivors.” - “They learn quickly to accept what will keep them safe, and then, they find solace in whatever they can to maintain their mental health as well…” - “Boys fight until they break. Leaving them a shell of what they once were. But girls don’t have the same pride.” - “They leave themselves behind and become someone new.”
To be honest, I'm not entirely in agreeance with myself when I flagged this as benevolent sexism. But I felt some type of warning was necessary since he's talking about what separates women from men.
Dabi is complementing women by saying this while simultaneously dissing his own gender, but he's also degrading both in a way by insinuating that girls don't have any will to fight back because, in his words, they don't have any pride. He also says that girls are quick to change depending on their situation, saying that they become someone new. Meaning, essentially, he doesn't really think women take any pride in who they are and will change their personality just as quick as a chameleon camouflages itself.
It's really up to each of his own whether to take this as a compliment or not. Either way, I find it a slightly sad point of view.
But a sad compliment or not - it's still kind of tough to say whether it's sexist or not. However, it's obvious he has certain opinions about women - and I figured I might as well flag it as benevolent sexism just to stay safe.

Hi! So I’m doing a personal art project on fashion in the 1890s, and I am struggling. Like a lot. I created a Pinterest board of a bunch of 1890s dresses, problem is I’m having a hard time identifying the uses for some of them. I know that a Walking dress is a type of Day Dress but how exactly would one differentiate the two? What exactly would be the physical differences between a Walking dress and a Day dress?
And did everyone have walking dresses? Or was the more of an ‘upper class’ sort of thing?
I understand the struggle. It was quite hard to parse out at first for me too since the Victorian dress etiquette was pretty complex. Fortunately I have made a post about that specifically for 1890s. If it doesn't answer all your question or you want me to specify something, feel free to sent another ask! I used examples from different years of the decade to make it more applicable to the whole decade but it should be remembered that there was changes to the silhouette thorough the decade and every type of dress would be adapted to the shifts in the fashionable silhouette.
Though as I point out in the post it focuses on the upper class. For the working class and to some extent middle glass it was a little different. The working class did not participate in the high society events, but many middle classes could at least to some of them, and working class women worked outside of the house too, while married middle class women generally didn't. Young unmarried middle class women did often work, for example as secretaries and shop assistants in respectable establishments. Working women didn't spend their days receiving guests at tea parties or attending them, so they didn't have tea dresses, nor did they generally have evening gowns which would be required in formal high society events. They might have a dinner dress though if they were well off, which was the least formal of evening gowns. Middle class women would generally have these. Working class and the casual middle class day dress resembled much more the walking dress of the upper classes than their other day dresses. They would have a church dress that would be a little fancier day dress for church and usually even fancier day dress for formal functions, like weddings.
Here's working class women in their work attires that were practical day dresses and aprons usually.
Tumblr media
And here's middle class women in fairly similar dresses.
Tumblr media
Different types of day dresses
Maybe I should expand more on the differences in day dresses and how walking dress relates, since while I talk about day dress and walking dress separately in the linked post, I don't fully explain the whole day dress thing since I did need to simplify. Day dress was not a specific dress, but quite a broad category of dresses that were used in different situations thorough the day. They are quite hard to differentiate sometimes, mostly because they weren't really that strictly different from one another. To understand why one dress was used in one situation, we need to understand the dresses in the casual to formal scale. Usually casual is looser, more practical, less elaborate and more covering but has shorter hem and the opposite apply to more formal.
When staying at home, people would be in their most casual clothing, but the level of formality would rise when receiving guests. Leaving home would require higher level of formality, but how high would depend on what you were going to do and who would see you doing it. This is why visiting gown is more formal than the dress the hostess would receive their visitor in. Close family members and friends could be casually received outside specific events during the day and a casual house dress or tea dress was acceptable for that. Afternoon tea was an important social event for upper and middle class women, and it would be slightly more formal occasion, but still for family and friends and therefore somewhat casual. Visiting dress were on the formal end of the afternoon dresses, but more casual versions of it could be used to go see a close friend or family member in a more casual way. Carriage dress was worn for open carriage rides, which were social events for the upper class. There they would be seen prominently by their whole community while they socialized in the carriage among their peers. Carriage dress was therefore very formal and elaborate, often had a trail and usually had a cloak as the wind might get cold. Promenade dress was for walks in a park. This was different from an actual walk, as the upper class people would go to a park to be seen and to socialize. Promenade dress was then somewhat formal, though less than most visiting dresses or carriage dress.
Here's first an example of a quite elaborate visiting dress from 1894-95 and then carriage dresses, first image from 1894, second from 1891.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walking dress was the least formal of the dresses an upper class person might wear outside the house (excluding sports dresses). It was used by upper class people for city walks and traveling, but as I said earlier the practical day dresses of middle and working class were very similar to it. It was practical and simple. It had shorter hem, it was made from sturdy materials, often wool and it was usually tailored. Dress Reform Movement, which was a moment among the first wave feminists, advocated among other things for tailoring in women's clothing, arguing it was more practical. The trend begun in 1880s and it's really most prominent in walking dresses and sports wear of 1890s. Which it why the walking dress typically has a lot of elements from men's fashion. Unlike the other day dresses, which were rarely tailored and had usually just the skirt and the bodice, the walking dress had a skirt, shirtwaist, tailored jacket and sometimes a waistcoat and a tie or bow. Sometimes a walking dress is hard to distinguish from a promenade dress. Promenade dress was more elaborate and while it usually had a shorter hem than for example carriage dress, it wasn't as short as for a walking dress and it might even involve a bit of trail. The things is promenade dress and walking dress probably had a lot of overlap.
Here's fashion plates showing promenade dress styles, first from 1896, second from 1898, both conveniently showing an elaborate dress and a tailored look that's easy to get mixed with a walking dress, and possibly would have been used as such in some cases.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's walking dresses shown in a picture from 1899 (note the early photoshop to make the waist smaller), a fashion plate from 1896 and a painting from 1897. Really the main difference is the hem of the skirt to the promenade dresses of tailored style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shirtwaist
I will mention on it's own shirtwaist too, since it highlights a lot of the class differences and how they showed. The shirtwaist, or blouse waist or sleeve shift, is a hard garment to pinpoint as it was used for many different purposes by different people. It was one of the first garments to be mass-produced and therefore very affordable. It was also loose and unfitted by nature and so easy to move in. For these reasons it was used with a practical skirt by working class and middle class women as casual wear. The outfit was sometimes used with a jacket similar in style to those of walking dresses, making it practically indistinguishable from a walking dress. Here's for example pictures of working women class women wearing shirtwaists at work and at town shopping (the other picture could be of middle class women too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As tailored styles influenced by men's fashion became popular, so became shirtwaists. At the same time sports were becoming popular and sportswear was highly influenced by this tailored trend. Shirtwaist being light and loose was perfect for sports and was used by upper and middle classes for tennis, golf and cycling for example. (I'm working on a post about the history of tennis ensemble where I go deeper into this.) Because of it's very casual nature, it was not considered suitable for the upper classes in most situations outside sports. As seen above it was part of the walking dress for the upper class, but in that situation it was used under a jacket. Young fashionable progressive women, who were often called the New Woman, started using it in their morning dresses and then even casual day dresses.
Here's first a picture of tennis ensemble from latter half of 1890s, a picture of young women from 1898 and a fashion plate from 1898.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a pinterest board of primary source examples for Victorian fashion, where I've made a rough divide between different periods of the era and different types of dresses inside every period. It's not fully organized yet and at least for now the types of dresses are divided very roughly into day dresses, evening dresses, sports ensembles and toilette. Toilette is a vague enough term so I used it here to include basically any dress used exclusively at home. The categories are maybe not granular enough to be helpful for you here, but I'm linking it here in hopes it would be of some help.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡‧₊˚‎ the inner working of the heart:
this event will only contain pieces that will either be yandere or nsfw! bear in mind, nsfw will only be written for afab readers and will use she/her prns but yandere pieces will always be gn! i do write wlw for nsfw.
now that we have gotten that out the way, here is some info regarding this valentine’s event! the entire selection of prompts (or rather lyrics which will be used as inspiration for the writing) is based on chase atlantic songs! there is no requirement for you to know about them or their music however, as the simple rules will explain everything you have to do! <3
these will be posted in instalments that will be sorted by fandom and nsfw/yandere! so it may take me a lil’ while to get everything out and ready. please be patient <3
‎♡‧₊˚‎ follow the heartbeat:
have i captured your interest? great! let’s move onto the rules shall we? don’t worry, they’re quite simple! all you have to do is send me the song title and the character you want it with after reading the lyrics from either the yandere section or the nsfw section!
however! i will only write for a specific character once. and the same applies for the song title! so if, let’s say, the song ‘moonlight’ was chosen for ‘azul’, neither the song nor the character could be requested again!
therefore, this event will work on a first come, first served basis. i will regularly update what characters and songs have already been chosen, so stay on the lookout for that dear! if your request doesn’t get written, this will be the reason why.
requesting nsfw for the twst first years is strictly prohibited <3!
‎♡‧₊˚‎ to your heart’s desire:

Logan headcanons because I can
Autistic
Red is an overwhelming color for him, mainly due to his brain associating it with Roman and Roman's often overwhelming personality
Number 2 is why he despises when Thomas wears red.
The red pen he used to use was only due to his brain applying Strict Teacher Rules to his annotations and edits to Roman's scripts, he was extremely glad to find that Roman despised the pen and wanted him to use a different one
He used to be much more apt to outbursts of a more positive kind, such as willingly giving more information than strictly needed because he enjoyed helping the others learn things
This changed due to repeated negative feedback that makes Logan feel as though he did nothing but make the others feel stupid (red pen, again, but slightly worse because it was more EVERYTHING he was doing, than just one thing)
He stopped wearing his onesie, even when alone in his room, due to fear of being summoned and ridiculed for his childish behavior
He is much harder on himself than he is on the others, despite their apparent belief that he is an arrogant cocky dick
He doesn't often pay attention to the lyrics in songs, rather the beat and instrumental, therefore his music taste is extremely wonky, consisting of any kind of instrumental that makes his brain feel happy, including extremely inappropriate songs and/or extremely childish ones, without him even realizing the context of the words (this is actually backed by his playlist)
There is something about the formula of country music that makes it extremely appealing to him and his pattern-seeking brain
This also applies to those thriller movies that follow the classic killer pattern with the survival rules.
Janus and Roman are two of Logan's least favorite sides
Roman is too overwhelming, and Janus is incredibly hard for him to understand due to him talking almost exclusively in lies
Patton is kind of in the middle, if he was to properly rank them. His overly feelingsy thing, and the wishy washy of morals and the confusing mixture of both makes it hard for them to work together, but he prefers Patton to Roman because he is less overwhelming and loud and otherwise overstimulating, and he doesn't have to worry about Patton speaking in lies, which puts him above Janus.
Remus is in second place, simply because Remus is slightly more tolerable than Patton, even though Logan cannot place WHY (it might be how blunt Remus is compared to how Patton likes to sugarcoat tings and/or hide the negative things)
Virgil is his favorite because they can have logical debates that, even when they get out of hand, will not overwhelm and overstimulate him, they have similar sensory issues, and he is simply the calmest of all the other sides
Logan despises his outbursts, regardless of what kind, and he refused to speak to any of the sides for a week after WTIT
Virgil was the first one to break through afterwards
Remus apologized for pushing him so far, but clarified that he wasn't actually sorry for DOING it, and more for how much it clearly affected Logan beyond the automatic reaction he had hoped for
Logan accepted this apology, because it was sincere, and he can understand Remus' point of view
He did get him back, however, by forcing him to sit through an entire 'lesson' on actual class etiquette.
This started a kind of 'battle' between them of putting each other through increasingly annoying things that one enjoyed and the other did not
Virgil caught Remus forcing Logan to wear a particular texture that extremely bothered his sensory stuff, as a part of this 'game' and proceeded to tear Remus a new one about abusing a fun little game that Virgil thought was a bad idea in the first place, and Can't you see that you've gone too far, this isn't funny anymore, he's genuinely distressed, get him out of that before I take YOUR nipples and shove them up YOUR nose.
Remus didn't actually care about the nipple thing, but he did get where Virgil was coming from, and got Logan out of that Horrific Sweater of that Horrific Texture, and apologized by letting Logan force him to wear an Actual Tie tied Properly for an Entire Day
The game has been on hiatus since because Virgil refuses to allow it to continue, despite Logan insisting that it's Quite Fine, Virgil, there is No Need for your Continued Vigilance, however Appreciated it is. (and it is VERY appreciated, Logan does not usually receive this kind of positive attention to make sure he is comfortable and stays that way)
Logan and Remus will sit and watch Those Movies Referenced In Number 11 together, and will each go on rants about how Stupid that Character is for going in That Room, or Up Those Stairs or something equally stereotypical and stupid
This never gets old, and Logan thinks he may do this until he ceases to exist however that may happen
They watched Trick (2019) together, and Logan spent an hour and a half ranting about how Fucking Amazing the movie was and how The End was So Good and Revolutionary and It's Such A Shame this movie Isn't More Popular because it's A Masterpiece
This is the moment Remus realizes he's in love with Logan
Remus says this seconds after realizing it, cutting Logan off mid-rant
Logan gapes at him for a minute, unsure how to respond, before (extremely apologetically) explaining that he does not feel those feelings for Remus, and that he doesn't want their difference in feelings to harm their friendship because Frankly he's Unsure how he would Continue Doing This (existing) without Remus there in some capacity
This makes their friendship extremely strained, and eventually, they stop spending time together.
Remus explains that this is because he can't Keep Doing This because he is constantly Not Saying Things he wants to say to Logan so that Logan doesn't think he's Actively Hitting On Him, and it makes Remus Physically Ill to not say his things out loud
Logan is unable to function properly for a week after this, and he doesn't really understand how he got This Attached to him.
Virgil talks some sense into him, and Logan has to then spend three months examining his feelings (ugh, feelings) for Remus, until he comes to the conclusion that he Is, In Fact, In Love With Remus
His immediate reaction is to go straight to Remus' room and tell him his feelings
Virgil tries to stop him and fails because Logan cannot think of one logical reason that Remus wouldn't at least hear him out, even if Remus' feelings have since disappeared, which Logan knows is something that happens, and is uncontrollable (if those feelings WERE controllable, he would never have them)
The second Logan says the words, "I'm in love with you", Remus kisses him without a seconds thought, because this is something he's wanted to do since Before he realized he was in love with Logan.
Logan's brain cuts out and overheats as if he is a literal computer, and it takes the literal snap of his neck (killing him) to properly reboot him so he can function.
Remus spent almost three hours trying to get Logan back to normal and almost has an anxiety attack thinking he's just caused the most catastrophic thing ever and somehow literally killed Thomas' Logic.
Virgil senses Remus' increasing anxiety, and is the one to suggest the neck snap. He says it as a joke, to lighten the mood to hopefully make Remus feel better, and Remus takes it as a genuine suggestion.
The first thing Logan does once rebooted, is kiss Remus back.

Vulpes headcanons!
?
I have plenty to offer! Thanks for the ask!
He's resourceful. Good at making use of what he has to get by, or get out of a problem. He's very clever in that regard, a bit of a Macgyver.
This, combined with being raised by the Legion, has caused him to form a resentment for the "profligates" who "have more luxuries afforded to them than I ever will, and yet they still complain."
He's good at reading everyone but himself. Which is a critical flaw, and he should really learn to do some introspection. But he has great attention to detail when it comes to observing others. He will often remember mundane details weeks, months, or even years later.
When not putting on a show to try to impress people, he's reserved, and I hesitate to say laid-back, because he's not, he's very high-strung, but he is surprisingly calm on the surface.
His usual speaking voice is soft, low, and monotonous. He will comment on things matter-of-factly, which others may find unusual or funny because of how blunt it is, yet said so casually. And apparently without thought, but this isn't usually true, because he tends to think deeply before speaking.
(I have this same headcanon for Arcade—he doesn't have an internal monologue or think in any particular language, so every time he speaks, he has to translate abstract thoughts and concepts and images and sentence fragments into coherent language. It's part of why he and Vulpes are so well-spoken, because they're particular about getting across the specific and abstract nature of their thoughts across. It's distressing to not be understood, or worse, misinterpreted. This is how I think and speak, so I passed this on to both of them.)
He's sardonic and sarcastic, often without meaning to be.
He is obsessed with numbers, dates, times.. he's highly superstitious too. He feels the need to strictly categorize things, ideas, places, names, and people themselves as "good" or "bad". You'll never guess which category he places himself in. (No, really, it's not intuitive.)
While Vulpes struggles greatly with understanding or analyzing himself, one thing he doesn't do is afford himself much self-pity once he realizes that's what he's doing. He hates feeling pathetic or helpless, so he takes action to "solve it". Which is good in theory, except the actions he takes are usually self-destructive and/or drastic grabs for power, instead of, y'know, self-improvement.
I think he genuinely sees this as self-improvement. He was taught that overworking yourself is the expected norm, violence is a tool to gain respect, and your purpose above all else is to serve the Legion, at whatever cost to yourself.
The attitude of persistent self-improvement and taking action when feeling helpless would be great, if he had a long overdue reality check and learned to, uh, change his definition of self-improvement..
I hesitantly disagree with the notion that he's asexual, if it comes from "he's cold and unfeeling and sadistic therefore he's asexual", but I definitely see it and largely agree if it's "he's asexual because he just doesn't have an interest in the typical idea of sexuality as we understand it"
He definitely has feelings and preferences, but he's never had the time to sit down and think about it, nor the language to describe it. It is just not on his list of priorities.
I have more headcanons I want to talk about, but those apply primarily in the fics I'm working on, so I'll reblog and add those thoughts separately.

Blog Update (Reblogging Rules)
I may not have been too vocal about it but besides the original posts, this blog exists to archive as much of the Esca content on tumblr as it can (even if the original posts were deleted, as long as this blog is online, you can find the reblogs here at least). Therefore, I used to be less selective about reblogging or moderating content but I think it's about the time I started, for several reasons. One, this blog has been around for eight years (ugh, I made no anniversary post again). At this point, whatever piece of official material you post related to the almost thirty year old franchise, somebody probably posted it before. Yes, even if you scanned it yourself. And if you repost something you just downloaded somewhere, well, then you probably know that. Chances are you either are reposting someone who originally posted it on tumblr, or, if you got it somewhere else, there is someone who already reposted it to tumblr before. The archive would just get cluttered if I included each and every one of the reposts. Two, we are old enough and should have enough accumulated knowledge as a fandom that we can get past the disinformation. Three, there is a rise in AI and it needs to be addressed as well.
I tried to formulate and will from now on impose some rules as to what I will or will not reblog here, so that everyone knows what to expect.
Only posts that bring something new or extra will get reblogged. I will not reblog the fifth reupload of an image that has been floating around the web for decades (and you can find it in the blog archive). Exceptions: I will reblog any gifs or edits made by the original poster, even of the scenes that were giffed before. It's still your work and the more gifs we have to use as reactions, references, etc., the better. I will also reblog content that was posted before, provided it was made by you and/or is of higher quality than the previous posts, or brings something else to the table.
I will not reblog any reposts of fanart without credit. If it's a current artist that is present on tumblr, pixiv, deviantart or elsewhere, and you are reposting their art without their explicit permission, I will not reblog it, even with credit. I will consider reblogging posts linking to the artist's original website directly, if the artist is not present on tumblr. On the other hand, if it's an artist that is no longer active or online, you are posting a scan of a printed fanart, doujinshi, etc., I will reblog it for conservation reasons, as long as it has correct credit. I will also not reblog (fan)art obviously traced, redrawn, or edited from another artist without permission or credit to the original artwork. Redraws inspired by anime screenshots and official materials are fine but I will apply some quality control, and again, you should state the inspiration clearly.
I will not reblog posts that contain disinformation. This entails intentional or even honest mistakes. I will not correct you (no time for that and people tend not to like it anyway) but I will not reblog such posts. This entails false information (or information that has been proven wrong), misattribution (you credit the wrong person), or presenting your headcanon as official information. Of course, there is nothing wrong with posting theories and headcanons (and I will gladly reblog them), if they are presented as such.
I will not reblog AI content in any shape or form. It doesn't matter if you state that it's AI content, if you use it just for entertainment and do not claim to be the artist. This blog is strictly against AI use in art and will not help circulate such content.
Of course,
these rules are only guidelines.
you may not care that you don't get reblogged here.
I cannot know, remember, or recognize everything. I may break my own rules unknowingly.
the reason I have not reblogged your post may be entirely different. For one, it may not have been shown to me in the tag/search, or I just missed it somehow. If you think it doesn't break any of the rules and you would like to get it reblogged here, you can still send it to me via submit, ask, or message.
But I will not knowingly use this blog to spread anything in any way connected with art theft or disinformation and I will save myself some time by not reblogging the repost of a repost of a repost. If you have any thoughts about this, I'll be glad to hear them!

If you’re pro life are you also anti self defense?
Proportionate self-defense against an aggressor is legitimate, even if it results in the unintended but foreseen death of the aggressor, according to the Double Effect Principle. See CCC 2263-2264 below:
"The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not."
Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow: If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful. . . . Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's."
Obviously we're not allowed to use more force than is strictly necessary to protect one's rights and safety, and our intention must not be the aggressor's death specifically (the intention must be to preserve one's own life, with the death of the aggressor merely a foreseen but not desired side-effect).
And obviously abortion doesn't fall under this, at least in the case of pregnancies resulting from consensual sexual intercourse, because the parents chose to put the fetus into a dependent position in the first place.
For example, it is permissible to use proportionate force to protect our right to our own property (e.g. you can ethically punch a mugger who's trying to take your purse). But we can't use "defense of my own property from theft" as an excuse if we invite someone onto our boat and bring them out into the middle of the ocean, and then demand they get off the boat halfway out to sea because "it's my property and using it without my permission is stealing." That, obviously, is murder. We can't withdraw consent to supporting someone for their survival once we've been the one to put them in a vulnerable position in the first place.
Same concept applies to pregnancy; when we choose to make someone dependent on us for survival, we can't ethically withdraw that support before they reach safety except for extremely grave reasons, such as our own life being in danger—and even then we couldn't use direct murder as a solution, only proportionate force necessary to preserve our life with the foreseen death of the dependent as an unintended result. (This is the same double-effect principle behind salpingectomies for ectopic pregnancies, where the fetus's death is an unintended but foreseen side effect of removing them from the fallopian tube to save the life of the mother.)

I did say I thought it was *in part* related to the rampant misogyny of early '00s fandoms. It's definitely not the sole cause. Honestly I think trying to find a singular cause that's primarily or exclusively responsible for it is impossible because I assume it's really a whole bunch of factors interacting with each other that cause it. (that said, I imagine aku/roku dropped off a lot because nowadays... People get REALLY touchy about it being illegal due to character ages and whatnot)
Yes, but like I said, it doesn't explain why that same thing happens in other fandoms, particularly new ones. And I had discussed those other fandoms previously during this very conversation so it's not like I brought them up again out of nowhere. The fact that I can see the same thing happen in fandoms that are less than five, or even three years old suggest that it has little to do with early 2000s misogyny, if at all. Unless there's significant overlap in the people in those fandoms, which can't be verified in a lot of instances, then I don't find it worth tossing around as anything more than a tangential "it's possible this might have done something," which I don't find helpful
Don't misunderstand what I said. I didn't say that you thought that was the only explanation, I said that I, specifically, didn't intend to commit to a specific explanation. I didn't say that your read was invalid (other than the idea that people grew out of it rather than taking the attitude elsewhere), I listed a lot of alternate factors that probably had a lot more of an effect than the one you brought up and related what you said to other fandoms that I had previously brought up as relevant and how it didn't apply to them, but another explanation brought up previously might and therefore probably had more weight. That doesn't mean that your take was wrong, just that it wasn't the most relevant in the discussion. I think where the disconnect is happening is that you're speaking from a strictly KH-fandom standpoint, where your take is most relevant, and I'm speaking from a wider fandom culture standpoint that, yes, focuses on KH but I'm looking for unifying factors between several fandoms to explain why I can't escape the Riku obsession even outside of the KH fandom, which was... most of the point of my original response to my friend?
Because, again, my very first example was in a fandom without main female characters that's three years old (at best, even. It's only been available in English for one year). It shouldn't have anything to do with those attitudes, unless it was brought over from another fandom. But who's to say that they came from the KH fandom to Twisted Wonderland and it didn't happen the other way around? Or that the person making the comparisons in question didn't enter the KH fandom well after the yaoi heyday? Or was even old enough to be a part of it? You bringing up 2000s-era misogyny means almost nothing in that context, which was the original content of my response to another post. Is it any surprise that I didn't see it as my main focus?
So, yes, you may be correct that it has some part in the Riku obsession, but that part is so small that it's hardly worth mentioning, and it had almost nothing to do with my examples in the original discussion. Especially since that discussion ultimately led into talking about how Riku's popularity overshadows Sora, not Kairi.

Rexy Rules
All the general rules for Renegade Force 99 apply here, but in addition:
I use “Order 99” as a safe word for “This is the line, please don’t cross it”. It’s fine to accidentally do something that I need to red flag (it happens!), but ignoring the order will result in a block.
In the same breath, Order 99 applies to usage by others as well, if you growl, I’ll bite, so don’t be afraid to use it if I do something you don’t like!
I am totally fine with minors on this blog, nothing NSFW will ever appear, but do be mindful that doesn't mean I will tolerate things I don't find acceptable and will reach out to set boundaries if I have to.
While I fully support flirty asks, and can even be fine with some more steamy ones, keep in mind Rex may not respond how you want depending on your relationship with him. Any really weird ones will be deleted.
Just because I am fine with something doesn’t mean the other blogs in RF99 are! I’m pretty tough, I can take a punch, but we all have different rules here based on our own comforts.
Not interested in any OOC talks unless I need to set boundaries through them.
This is all for fun, therefore I will not take it too seriously unless I absolutely must. Any perceived hostility is strictly IC as if I truly had a problem, I’d call O99 or talk about it privately.
I am open to interacting with Bad Batch blogs outside the RF99 group! They will be set in their own AU tagged "AU Interactions", I'm also fine with OCs and Mains, but will not follow blogs that are not strictly RP and will be picky with OCs.

Speaking of fashion, I will eventually have the appropriate amount of time to dedicate myself to a proper attire headcanon post. For now, I only have examples for silhouettes pertaining to dresses gathered. Which at this point can ultimately be narrowed down in explanation as Muu holding preference for a bodice that does not require even just a modest breast size.
Although he does wear bralettes (which is not out of gender dysphoria or euphoria on any account actually. Instead, it is more so like a running joke with himself at this point due to the fact he's actually had an infatuation with wearing them since he was a sixteen year old boy that found a bra lying in the street) he doesn't do so with the intent of applying padding to them-- especially when considering the fact he has some minor gynaecomastia due to stubbornly persistent baby fat going on. He can deal with those, but he definitely doesn't want to even so much as imply he has "real breasts."
He also isn't one to gravitate towards those built around the necessity for breasts due to the fact that he does not wish for the attire adorning his body to appear as though something (or somethings) is missing. Which is also the given reason why even in his decision to wear what is considered women's underwear underneath the dresses similar to above, he does not engage in the act of tucking. Yes, that does come within treacherous territory per the fact that he is then advertising himself as a flamboyantly youthful individual with an occasionally visible (and not incredibly well endowed, mind you) genitalia outline in his attire. That's not even to mention the detectability of his disabilities on establishing conversation with him.
Beyond that, he's not too partial to much else. Length and material is otherwise irrelevant as long as he can freely move within it to accommodate an in-between active and sedentary lifestyle. He would also best appreciate those that are not overwhelming to the senses in one manner or another-- this includes itchiness, heaviness, lack of breathability, and so on. Textures usually aren't too worrisome to him, however, as he has been raiding the closet of his female friends (such as Hannah of @kannojo predominantly) for years, so by now he knows what he does and doesn't like with enough ease that even unexpectedly finding something is unappealing to him van be easily remedied without any fit.
The bottom line with all of this is while Muu strictly wears what is primarily marketed as women's clothing, he does not do so out of the desire to be a woman. In fact, he's asked that question within himself many times only to come up with the same conclusion each time: He is simply an aged up boy caught up in having to navigate too many things at once, therefore eccentricities intended to lighten his load have transpired. Being that 99% of abusers have been men throughout the years, and women his sanctuary from them, it became sensible at some point for him to cease one struggle for favor of mirroring his safety while he sources through another. Muu has no idea even how to be a person yet, let alone a gendered one.
That is also not to say he wishes to abolish entirely in favor of utilizing they/them pronouns. In fact, it still remains quite the opposite. At this time in his life, he's not looking to be othered more than he always has acquired for himself. Being gridlocked into a perpetual state of regression in his present has been isolating enough as is that he doesn't wish for more beyond that. It also has intriguingly been almost beneficial in keeping some of his identity centered, though, as being so interwoven with his inner teen provides connection with the perspective of character held back then.
When he was sixteen, he was very self assured in nearly all aspects in life until led to second guessing the bulk of them. Of those is one of which where he was well adamant that he was a boy with a preference for he/him pronouns to demonstrate that. And while he's been able to find appreciation for femininity that he'd have otherwise mocked in his youth, that is as far as it goes for the time being. Working beyond the semantics of that just isn't on the table at this time in his life.
Where he might go with it during Pride Month is still up to him, but, really, his focus is far more centered on fulfilling and answering other aspects of his person at this time. Generalized comfort and safety are of the utmost importance to his emotionally led manner of living. Once that is established, whether or not he opts for reintroducing what is considered men's attire back into his wardrobe is completely up in the air.
#; ♡ ; headcanons#muu doesn't even necessarily actively consider himself nonbinary due to the fact that he's open to the possibility#that he will feel centered in his identity as a man just as he was with boyhood once he is no longer Terrified to exist as is#identifying as genderflux in some aspect is definitely a cluch for him in regards to#when you've heard from people your whole life that you are not a man for aspects relating to maturity and physical appearance#you eventually may find yourself going I'm not a man maybe!! Out of safety and hopefulness that doing so might make people be kind to you#socially he definitely feels abandoned by masculinity and blocked out of spaces by his peers#but being a woman has never fit right in his head either as he genuinely knows he does not Want to be one#what he wants to feel included and wanted with so the bulk of muses who've so far made him feel that way are women#and only really a couple men at best with fran at the top of the list#women wise he has neff who he has commented even himself to be the only person not including his canon wife#to love him unconditionally#and suki who after one stint or another involving sully and calix was the only person to ask him how he was feeling#I'm also including lyla per the fact that she is one of few he can be fun and funny with which may not sound like a lot#but when you carry the burden of holding a notoriety for being melancholic it is actually really an act of kindness#to be considered something other than that even just once because he did used to be very cheeky back in the day#nowadays he just spends so much time worrying about what characteristics of himself must be so grotesque to others around him#that he's lost the ability to even breathe too loud around another person let alone take up space and time beyond that#which is actually why I find it very fitting he wears women's clothing because which section of the binary has gone centuries being told#to stay out of sight and out of mind for their own safety ??#not to mention the fact that can one really be too surprised that someone deeply in need of nurturing spaces#would then decide to dress like a woman because of the connection with motherhood#being that moms are usually the poster parent for unconditional love which is a whole mixed bag I'm not getting into today#nonetheless the bottom line is still that muu does not identify as either transgender transsexual or even as a crossdresser as#none feel applicable to him at this time and instead he's solid in being people's eccentric friend who happens to be#both feminine and jovial and most Definitely sensitive all while he figures out all else beyond that

review: the cuban girl's guide to tea and tomorrow by laura taylor namey
read: 21 january 2024—22 january 2024
medium: audiobook
⭐️2/5
every time i think about this book i want to drop half a star from my rating.
it's okay. it will stay at a 2/5 for now.
usually i don't take the time to actually review a book because i am busy and tired, but i just keep thinking about how much i want to talk about my issues with this book.
i think this book really bothers me because i lived lila's eventual dream life. i moved from the united states to england for university three years ago, and there are a couple of things that just felt really off about lila's character arc and the characterisation of the british characters.
as i said, i'm american and therefore i don't have much claim to knowing exactly how british people act and speak, and that awareness made me wonder if laura taylor namey had it right and i was wrong. later i spoke to my british flatmate and she sort of validated some of my issues with how the british characters spoke—namely that i think i heard/read the word "bloody" more times in the less-than-nine-hours duration of this novel than i have in the entirety of my three years living in the u.k. there may be some regional and generational differences in speech, but "bloody" doesn't really seem to be a prominent staple in british gen z slang in my limited experience. it honestly felt like an american-held stereotype of british speech given personality (and not all that much personality if i'm being honest).
moving on.
i felt like the writing of lila's coming to love england wasn't done very well. this is something that i closely understand and identify with, and the way it was handled in this novel felt very abrupt and awkward. if you're going to tell me that lila 'loves england', you have to show me as well, and i don't think that was accomplished. i took greater issue to it because a big part of her monologues about 'loving england' was that, for her, england was tied to orion. it started to feel like she only loved england because she loved orion. this isn't strictly true, and i think she does cite a few other reasons why she wanted to stay in england, but tellingly, i don't remember what any of them were. i know that not every person who moves to england will fall in love with it the way i did, but i remember being absolutely in wonder at the architecture, the culture, the atmosphere, the transportation links, the blend of modernity and antiquity, and so much more. i didn't get that feeling from lila's narration, and i think more time should have gone into exploring that.
a couple of very small lines at the end compounded this feeling of "that's not how that works". the first was a conversation between lila and pilar, where she says the word "petrol" instead of "gas". the second was her telling orion that she had submitted an application to a university in london and started applying for her student visa.
let me explain.
in my experience, vocabulary shifts take a lot of time. when you grow up into early adulthood saying one thing, it's not going to take only two and a half months for you to slip out of that and randomly start using another word. there are certainly some british words that someone might intentionally switch to using as opposed to the american equivalent.
for me, that was words like 'uni(versity)' over 'college' and, more recently (as in, in the last four months or so), 'trousers' over 'pants'. these are both because 'college' and 'pants' mean something different in england than they do back home, and i use these words daily to discuss my uni work. also, to me, 'petrol' is such a random choice. in my entirety of living here, i've probably heard the word 'petrol' only a handful of times. granted, i live in london where i and all of my friends use public transportation, which might not be the case for lila—i can't remember.
regardless, my point is that if your vocabulary is going to shift within only two months, it's going to be a word you use and hear daily, and you'd probably have to put the mental awareness into using the new word. her slipping up speaking to her american sister and saying 'petrol' just doesn't seem realistic. there is a plethora of more common words that namey could have used to make it more believable.
finally, i think i had a visible and audible reaction to the student visa comment. in public.
this was such a small comment in the grand scheme of the novel but it made me wonder if namey had researched at all how applying for a student visa from the u.s. to the u.k. works. if all of my above points are strictly subjective and reliant on my individual experience, this is the single point i will make that is based in facts.
the specific statement is something like "i applied [to the uni] and started my student visa application this morning" (i'm not entirely sure of the wording nor punctuation, i no longer have access to the book). i read this as she'd submitted her application to study and her application for a student visa on the same day, but i will allow that it could be read as she had submitted her application to study on an earlier date and had started the visa process that morning.
it doesn't matter which interpretation is the correct one because it doesn't make sense logistically either way. i've had to apply for two student visas over my three years of studying so far. to apply for a student visa, you need a number code that is given to you from the school after you've been accepted. for both courses i was accepted into, the application process started in february or march at the very latest, and it took over a month for me to be accepted. from then, it took a few months for me to even get that number code so i could start the visa application. you can't really get very far in the visa application process without that code because it's the thing that tells the u.k. government that you have a school sponsoring your residency.
even if she applied to the school as soon as she got home (and she didn't), there would still only be two weeks between then and her telling orion that she had started the visa process, which is definitely not enough time at all. it's such a small detail, but that was the final straw for any believability i might have given the novel credit for previously. it made me feel like this wasn't a well-researched novel, which is a shame, because i do believe that namey really loves england, and i wish she had let this interest show in her work.
if i didn't have these experiences, i don't think i would have noticed these inconsistencies and misrepresentations.
anyway, i read this book because i learnt while doing research for an essay that kit connor is cast in the movie adaptation. will i still be watching the movie? yes. because while it lacked depth and all i have done in this review is discuss some of its faults, it was still a sweet and relatively enjoyable read. i definitely think that the movie has the potential to be a very lighthearted and easy thing to watch.
tl;dr because i recognise that this review is, indeed, too long: this book was cute and lighthearted, though it lacked the sort of depth i usually look for in novels. there were a lot of inconsistencies in the writing of the british characters and lila's love for england that bothered me because they paralleled my own experiences, but not well. i recognise that this might be entirely subjective and someone else could find that lila's story was a great representation of their individual experience.

If I was going to put the Awakening crew's skill proficiencies into Three Houses terms...
Generally speaking, I go with the principle of "based on their reclass options in Awakening."
This only applies to the Shepherds who have shown up in Among Lions so far. This is, as always, my interpretation.
So, they break down a bit like this:
Aversa, who has only one promotion branch apiece with access to Swords, Staves, or Riding, has no skill bonuses in those areas. She's neutral on Authority because, despite being a character who's canonically killed her subordinates before (very marginally offscreen), seems confident enough in her tactical acumen to be why Gangrel's war effort didn't instantly implode.
She also has penalties in Heavy Armor and Bows, because she has no reclass options with access to either. She also has a penalty in Brawling because she's frankly the kind of person to reach for magic before punching anybody.
Her talents, instead, lie in Lances (Pegasus Knight promotion tree), Axes (Wyvern Rider promotion tree), Flying (both) and Reason. Strictly speaking, she could have access to the Faith proficiency (which is where Nosferatu is hanging out), but in Three Houses that stat is effectively an indicator of the character's faith in Fodlan's religion. This is an arena in which Aversa is...decidedly not winning any awards.
So, therefore:
Boons: Lances, Axes, Reason, Flying
Banes: Bows, Brawling, Heavy Armor
Budding Talent: N/A
With all that reasoning on the board, let's go faster for the others.
Morgan:
Boons: Swords, Lances, Axes, Reason, Flying
Banes: N/A
Budding Talent: Authority (tutored by her father)
In the Future Past DLC level of Awakening, Female Morgan is depicted as a Wyvern Lord as an antagonist. While manakete!Morgan doesn't start out with any weapon proficiencies, she has access to all of her dad's reclass options (barring the gender-locked ones), and then has Pegasus Knight (and Bride) on top of that.
Robin:
Boons: Swords, Axes, Reason, Authority
Banes: N/A
Budding Talent: N/A
The only classes Robin doesn't have access to are gender-locked. He is very good at doing almost anything the player needs him to do. This particular Robin is Speed-boon/HP-bane.
Henry:
Boons: Swords, Axes, Reason, Bows
Banes: Lances, Authority, Heavy Armor, Flying
Budding Talent: N/A
Henry's reclasses are the Thief and Barbarian lines, while his starting class is Dark Mage. This gives him access to bows in two unrelated promotions, swords in three, and axes in two. He can't be reclassed to a flying unit or one that wields lances, but he does have Dark Knight. And despite his aptitude for animals (in a warped Disney princess way), Minerva totally bit him once. Lastly, because Henry has the tactical acumen of a Molotov cocktail and an old habit of attacking allies when bored, he's got an Authority bane.
Lissa:
Boons: Lances, Reason, Faith, Riding, Flying
Banes: Bows, Brawling, Heavy Armor, Authority
Budding Talent: N/A
Lissa's base class is a Cleric, so she has to get a Faith boon pretty much out of courtesy. Her reclass options are Troubadour (Faith, Riding) and Pegasus Knight (Lances, Flying). She's actually short a promotion compared to some units, because Cleric and Troubadour can both promote into War Cleric. Still only counts as one. Lissa can't access armored classes or bows, and canonically wants nothing to do with leadership roles, and so she has Heavy Armor, Bow, and Authority banes. Just having a lot of potential training paths doesn't make her a balanced combatant when she also comes with absolutely garbage Strength and Defense.
Libra:
Boons: Axes, Reason, Faith
Banes: Bows, Brawling, Heavy Armor, Flying
Budding Talent: N/A
Libra only has four possible promotions, because his three base classes (Priest, Mage, Dark Mage) have overlapping options. At least one of them gets a horse?
Lon'qu:
Boons: Swords, Axes, Flying
Banes: Reason, Heavy Armor, Authority
Budding Talent: N/A
Lon'qu has three base classes: Thief, Myrmidon, and Wyvern Rider. His sole magical promotion, Trickster, is the only reason he doesn't have a Faith bane, and the same goes for Wyvern Rider and Lances. While Myrmidon and Thief both promote into Assassin, that still only counts as one Bow-using option.
Cordelia:
Boons: Swords, Lances, Reason, Flying
Banes: N/A
Budding Talent: N/A
The only class type Cordelia doesn't get access to is "armored," but Miss Multitalented still doesn't have any banes.
Olivia:
Boons: Swords, Lances, Flying
Banes: Axes, Brawling, Authority, Heavy Armor
Budding Talent: N/A
Olivia is all Speed, Skill, and Luck. She does have two reclasses, Myrmidon and Pegasus Knight, but her low Magic and meh Strength means she tends to be a supporter more than a fighter. Except for when she gets Lethality to work.

One of the things that I think really trips people up getting into stuff like witchcraft, or really any way of knowing apart from the western scientific system, is that ways of knowing aren't strictly affirmative—they don't just give you ways to assert things, but also ways to avoid being wrong—and that those ways to avoid being wrong differ from the scientific method in the same way that the affirmative ways of arriving at beliefs differ from it.
Scientism has a really strict and specific set of behaviors that are meant to help you arrive at a way of not-believing-something. They're materialist, they have nothing to do with who you are as a person. It's just process. But scientism also holds a core value of pursuing comprehensive understanding: you should try to know everything, and must simply sometimes fail to meet the criteria for belief.
People coming from that implicit orientation then often approach a way of knowing that doesn't have a rigorous approach to falsifying particular claims, and come to one of two conclusions: A. That this system permits you to believe whatever you want, and is therefore worthless, or B. That anything they come up with is justified by that system, which is comprehensively empowering.
Scenario A is annoying but not particularly consequential, it's scenario B that leads a lot of people into trouble.
Take, for example, the notion of divinity: finding the divine within oneself, or seeking it outside of oneself. Any person pursuing that line of exploration might find something, and, quite appropriately leaving behind the inapplicable framework of scientific falsification, come to the conclusion that that person is God, or that they have met, communed with, and know the mind of a god or gods. This has harmful consequences for the individual and others around them ranging from condescension to solipsistic megalomania.
What's gone wrong here is that while the modernist perspective typical of scientism is undergirded by an assumption that one can know everything, and should try, most other perspectives start from the opposite assumption: that one mind can't know everything, and that trying is harmful.
Finding divinity within yourself and coming into your innate power is a great thing to do. Assuming you're the only person who's done that, and that the way you got there is the only way to get there, is insane. "I'm a god" is a significantly less megalomaniacal claim when entailed in the further claim "and so is everyone else."
Finding divinity outside yourself is also great: connecting with other powers can be very fruitful and spiritually fulfilling. Assuming you know the metaphysical nature of the experiences you're having, that your comprehension of those experiences is complete, and that your experience of these phenomena is authoritative insight into a universal truth that everyone else just gets wrong, is unjustifiably arrogant. "I know a deity personally, this is her name, and here are the things about her that the myths get wrong" is impossible to justify. "I have had experiences connecting with great power and I could tell you about the form in which that experience came to me" is significantly more hinged.
Metaphysical certainty like this comes from the application of the scientific worldview to unscientific evidence. A strictly scientism approach would have you therefore dismiss all these experiences as meaningless. But embracing multiple ways of knowing doesn't mean applying just some of the standards of one way to another when it's convenient or makes you feel more powerful. Science and spirituality are, for the most part, not interoperable. You can't import meaning from one to the other. What you know in one context, you know in a different way than what you know in the other.
