TRANSITION TUTORIAL by v @shangs
I got some questions about how I did the glitch effect in this set, and I think because the glitch sets with green and magenta/red and cyan protrusions like this one are more complex that the effect seems like it’s hard, but it’s deceptively simple! I’ll show you how to do transitions like this with an effect buffer in between, whether it’s a glitch effect or a light leak or anything else.
What you’ll need:
Photoshop with timeline (I use 2022)
A transition video for the effect
Preferably, a good knowledge of how to use the timeline for gifs
Two or more gifs
Tutorial under the cut!
I start out with my two gifs, sharpened, colored, on separate documents, and in timeline mode. The first thing you’re going to do is convert both of your gifs into Smart Objects, so that we don’t have to worry about all the coloring layers. Just select everything you have in the timeline, right click, and convert to Smart Object.
Now, right click on one of the gifs, select Duplicate Layer, and transfer it to the other gif’s PSD. Then just click File > Save as Copy, save the new PSD wherever you like, and close the first two PSDS, then open the copy. I recommend not saving your work in the first two PSDS with the single gifs so that if you have something you want to change, your gif isn’t locked into Smart Object Mode and you can go back to edit things.
Now, you have both your gifs on the same canvas in the same PSD. The timeline should look like this:
Tumblr media
[Caption: A picture of the Photoshop timeline so the gifs’ boxes are in a stacked line.]
Now, drag the gif you want to go second or to ‘fade in,’ so to speak, onto the row of the first. Your gifs will automatically form a Video Group and the timeline will look like this:
Tumblr media
[Caption: A picture of the timeline with the gifs’ boxes side-by-side.]
Now your gifs will play sequentially! I’m lucky and for some reason this almost 80 frame gif didn’t even hit 10mb, but you may need to trim some frames off the ends later if the gif is too big.
Let’s switch gears and look at this unassuming little box in the corner of the timeline. The box with the white filled in triangle on the bottom holds Photoshop’s premade transition effects. You can do things like fade to black, crossfade, just fade between two gifs, and more.
Tumblr media
[Caption: A photo of the square on the timeline that has Photoshop’s transition effects.]
I like using the Cross Fade effect for my gifs with this method, but it’s entirely up to you what effects you apply! Some transitions may even work better without an effect. Experimentation is key.
Tumblr media
[Caption: A photo of the timeline with the triangles denoting the cross fade effect put between the gif boxes.]
I went ahead and applied the cross fade effect to my gif, and this is what it looks like on the timeline.
Now to add the gif effect! Make the gif however you would like. For this one I actually recommend just opening the video with File > Open as long as it’s small enough, and it’ll open as a blue box on the timeline and if you right click it you can change the speed. Regardless, what I do is just make the gif, sharpen and trim to my liking, then duplicate that layer onto my timeline (just make sure that, when you click the three lines on the timeline menu and go to Set Timeline Frame Rate, that the rate of this video is the same as the rate of your two gifs from before, or you might get some choppy frames). I then place the gif around the middle, where the transition happens - you have to scrub around to find the perfect place to put it but I like to have it so that the gif covers both ends of the transition.
To put it visually, here’s the timeline:
Tumblr media
[Caption: A photo of the Photoshop timeline with the effect overlay stacked on top of the base gif.]
Your overlay gif should be outside the video group of your base gif.
I set the overlay to Screen and change the opacity. You can also add some color overlays - I actually went in with a gradient on top of the overlay, clipped it to the transition, and set it to Color so it wasn’t too bright of a white on my gif.
Save and export as normal - I like to take it back to frames mode before I save so I can keep the frame rate at 0.05 - and that’s all! A really simple way to get a sophisticated-looking transition.
Happy giffing!

Hihi!! Sorry if this question has been asked before but how do you make like your Transparents stick out of the shape :’)
Tumblr media
hello! i’m assuming you mean icons like these? in which case, the process is pretty simple!
first thing’s first is to set up your canvas! all my icons are 300x300 so i make a project that size, and then i drew a square with the shape tool and put my background over it (i usually do a gradient fill and a pattern fill) i also slapped a psd over top of it but if you’re making a psd you should wait for the character until you do that
Tumblr media
you wanna make sure whatever shape you’re using is lower than the center of the canvas so there’s space for the character’s head, if that makes sense?
after setting up your canvas you duplicate your shape and go to layer > raster mask > from transparency so it looks like this
Tumblr media
then while you have the raster mask selected you go to select > rectangle select (or you can draw but this is easier for me since i have shaky hands) and you draw a rectangle above your shape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rectangle should be just touching the edge of your shape, so there’s no gap in the character. then you go to edit > cut (make sure the raster mask is selected here) and cut that part out
Tumblr media
then you make a new folder and drag your raster mask into it and place it above your background like this
Tumblr media
that’s where your character goes! you can add your chara and adjust it however you want, but try to make sure there’s no weird cut offs in the hair or anything. raster masks can be fixed up if you draw using black (to cut out) and white (to keep in) though
Tumblr media
bada bing bass book you’ve got a sticky-outy icon! hurray. you can also add stroke effects and stuff and then save as a png and boom!
Tumblr media
picking good pngs to use is also important! it’s best if the character has a pretty straight forward pose like this so they don’t look weird. mafuyu has some good examples of bad pngs to use, like so:
Tumblr media
see how her hair and the ribbon get cut off awkwardly? try to avoid pngs that will do that, as they’re just a pain in the ass to deal with lol
hope this is helpful! lmk if you have any questions!!

Tumblr media
this was requested by a few people so, without further ado, below the cut i’ll explain how to make an edit of the eras tour poster like the ones that can be found here. i’ve seen different versions of these floating around twitter/tiktok/etc for a while but let’s be honest..the picsart ones don’t look as cute. i use photoshop 2020, but older versions should work just fine since this edit doesn’t involve anything too fancy!
now, i started with the original poster and carefully removed all of the images to create a base template that i’ve used for all the posters since. i don’t really feel like explaining how to do that because it feels kinda unnecessary when i can just link it to you. so go ahead and start by downloading my base template, which you can find here.
once you have that open, you’ll want to gather your images. you’ll need nine images that should be at least 300x300px in dimension and one much larger image to serve as the center png. how big this needs to be depends how large the subject of the photo is, but it should probably be around 2000px. keep in mind that the subject shouldn’t be too wide either, or else it will block the surrounding photos when you try to position it. for example, the below image wouldn’t be a good option because her arm would cover at least one of the other eras.
Tumblr media
once you have your photos picked out, you’re gonna want to drag the nine smaller ones into the document and crop/scale/position them so that there’s one in each square. remember that the template layer should be above the photo layers so that they’re contained within the frame. once you’ve done that, it should look something like this:
Tumblr media
now it’s outlining time. first, make a new transparent layer and place that between the photo layers and the template layer. it’s really REALLY important that you remember to always paint on this transparent layer and NOT directly on the photos, as we want to be able to edit the photos later without also editing the borders. i used a website like this to find the color codes of the backgrounds on the original poster, so i’ll just put them here for you:
debut: #bcd5b8 fearless: #f4cb8a speak now: #cfb6d4 red: #a45865 1989: #c0e6f9 rep: #5f5c57 lover: #f8bad3 folklore: #d3d0c9 evermore: #ceb69c
you’re gonna want to select the paintbrush tool and set it to 20px and choose the “soft round” setting in the general brushes folder (this will make sure that you don’t have any harsh edges). then, change the color of the brush to whichever era you’re starting with, using the hex codes above. now you’re ready to go in and start painting! on your transparent layer, outline the edges of the subject of your first photo. you don’t have to be super precise with this because the soft edges allow for more error!
Tumblr media
once you’ve done that, go ahead and change the brush setting back to hard round in order to fill in the surrounding edges, like so:
Tumblr media
and voilà! pretty easy, right? now you just have to do that eight more times for each era, using the corresponding hex code for your brush color. and again, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PAINT EVERYTHING ON THAT TRANSPARENT LAYER!!! pro tip: you can use the rectangular marquee tool to contain the square of the era that you’re working with so you don’t have to worry about staying inside the lines. once you’ve done that, it should look something like this (just ignore that the reputation background is too light, i used the wrong color and didn’t notice until later):
Tumblr media
ok now you’re gonna want to download this lovely psd pack in order to color the photos (you could also color them yourself, but i’m bad at coloring so i took the easy way out). open that up, and drag the first one over for whichever era you’re starting with. position it so that it’s directly above the corresponding era’s photo and then right-click the psd and select “ungroup layers” (you wanna do this because you won’t be able to create a clipping mask from grouped layers). then, with all the layers of the psd selected, you’re gonna wanna right-click and select “create clipping mask.” this should make it so that the filter is only visible on that era’s photo. now just repeat that process for each era! once you’ve done that, you should have eras-colored filters over each image, like so:
Tumblr media
now it’s png time! i’m not gonna explain how to make a png here because it would take too long and i’m such a perfectionist that the way i make pngs would probably get me locked up. however, here’s a really useful, in-depth tutorial on the subject if you’ve never made one before. go ahead and make your png and drag it into the document once you’re done. scale/resize/crop the png so that it fits nicely in the center of the document (and remember that this should be the topmost layer at this point, right above the template layer, so that it’s visible). it should look something like this now:
Tumblr media
now you’re gonna do the same thing for the center psd that you did for all the other eras, by creating a clipping mask from the “midnights” era filter:
Tumblr media
now all that’s left is the text! you have a few options for this part depending on what kind of edit you’re making. for the eras edit series, i made a png of each album title and positioned that in the center, like this:
Tumblr media
i’ve also seen a lot of people making edits of these for their pets/grandparents/themselves, in which case you probably want to put a name of some sort in there. i made a sample of this to show you. first, you’re gonna want to download this font. it’s not the exact font from the poster because that one costs money, but this one looks almost exactly the same once you stretch it vertically. once you’ve installed the font, make a new text layer and write whatever word you want. change the font size until it roughly matches that of the surrounding words (remembering that it won’t be as tall). then, right click the text layer and select “convert to smart object” so that you can stretch it and then select edit > transform > warp. a number of dots should appear around the text, which will allow you to pull the top and bottom edges of the word so that it looks as tall as the original font. once it roughly matches the poster font, press enter to exit out of warp mode. the text will also look blacker than what's on the poster, so just right click on the text layer/smart object, select “blending options,” and reduce the opacity until it matches. this is what i got:
Tumblr media
now you could stop there, but i like to mess with it a little (bc perfectionist) and go back and tinker with the paintbrush/clean up the edges and alter the brightness/contrast so that the images match each other a little better. after doing all that (and fixing the rep background color), this is what i ultimately ended up with (i also changed some of the images cause i didn’t like them):
Tumblr media
and that’s pretty much all there is to it! i’ve never made a tutorial before so idk if i explained too much or didn’t explain enough but please please feel free to message me if you have any questions/require further clarification on anything!!! ok thanks bye!:)

Sykkuno
It was your idea to wind down at a bar in the middle of the week
It took a bit of convincing but you managed to drag Sykkuno along with you
Being a Tuesday, the bar was rather quiet
While the two of you were chatting in the calm atmosphere, out of the blue, the bartender set down another glass next to the one containing the drink you'd ordered yourself
When you gave him a questioning look all he did was shrug and direct your gaze a few seats over to where a man you didn't recognize was sitting
"His treat", the bartender says as if he's been through this time and time again and simply cannot be bothered
One glance at the guy was more than enough to convince you not to want to give him another, let alone touch the drink he bought you
You didn't want to give him anything he could see as encouragement
But Sykkuno soon gave you another reason to not consume the drink
"He definitely put something in that."
His words caught your attention with a quirked brow, "Huh? How do you know?"
"It's just like mine, but fizzier." He pointed out and one look comparing the two glasses proved him right
The drinks were the same, but yours was roaring like a volcano
Your stomach turned but you pulled yourself together quickly and made a point to push the glass further away for good measure, "Fucking creep."
"Let's get out of here. We'll find a different bar." Sykkuno offered helpfully
And you couldn't have possibly agreed quicker
Valkyrae
You and Rae had made plans to go out and celebrate her new place for almost a month at that point
Now that you finally got around to it, one step in the bar and Rae immediately regretted not looking more into the bars in the area of her new home
The place was sketchy from floor to ceiling but with sore feet from all the furniture shopping you'd done, you decided to sit down for at least one drink and rest
After ordering your drink, you got up to answer an incoming call, leaving Rae to wait for the ordered drinks
When the bartender set them down, Rae gave her a brief smile but before she could return her gaze to her phone she caught an out-of-the-corner-of-the-eye glance of the guy sitting on the bar stool left of the one you'd planted yourself in
His eyes were sizing up your glass almost too obviously for it to be just a thousand yard stare
But when she saw the small plastic bag he retreated from his pocket, she was determined to not give him even a sliver of the benefit of the doubt
The two reached for the drink at the same time, with Rae reaching it and grabbing it first
The guy had no time to react before the liquid he was about to tamper with soaked his face and shirt
And then got a second dose from Rae's own drink as well as a round of insults before she hopped off the bar stool to fetch you and, sore feet be damned, drag you to a different bar
When asked why, as to not freak you out, she said some guy was flirting rather aggressively with her
No further questions asked, you hauled ass to a different, far more welcoming bar
Toast
You'd texted him to join you for a drink after arriving at the bar yourself
Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) he arrived at the bar while you were in the bathroom, but according to your seating position description via text, as well as the drink sitting by the empty stool by the bar corresponding with your usual choice of a drink, he got a good idea of where you were seated and started heading in that direction
However, something stopped him
The sight of the guy sitting nearby getting up from his stool and heading over to your unsupervised drink
He didn't see the exact thing, but Toast was more than able to draw a solid conclusion as to what the guy was doing
One foot out of the bathroom and you immediately managed to spot him even with the dim lighting
You exchanged a quick, and pretty distracted on his part, greeting, hugging him before trying to lead him to the spot you’d chosen to occupy
But seeing the serious, downright angry look on his face told you not to move
It’s a particularly rare occurrence to find Toast with an expression this frosty and ticked-off so you too were quick to become on-edge
Following his gaze to a stranger whose back was currently facing you only arose more questions but you never got to ask them because he beat you to speaking up
“Let’s get out of here, Y/N.“
You didn’t think to ask much after that, allowing him to lead you out of the bar instead of you leading him to the barstools
You did still ask later on and were rather terrified by the answer
But also extremely relieved and grateful to have had Toast then and there
Real friends are at the right place at the right time for one another always, no?
Corpse
You and Corpse have known each other too long and too well
Both of you’d go as far as to say that there are only very few things about one another that would surprise you
However, when you’d called Corpse in near-distress from a bar you’d hit with your colleagues after work, he’d been more than surprised
He was scared, genuinely and rightfully so
You’re not a lightweight, but you can’t exactly hold your liquor well either
Regardless, you wouldn’t be slurring-wordly drunk from a single cocktail
The room would most definitely not be spinning around you the way it was
And of course, calling it ‘a single cocktail’ could’ve been a way for you to downplay just how much alcohol you’d consumed
But it truly didn’t sound like it over the phone when you called Corpse to come pick you up cause you were certain you wouldn’t be able to drive yourself home
You too were genuinely confused by the falling-through of your sobriety under the weight of a single Margarita
That was the main reason Corpse didn’t fear a speeding ticket on your way to fetch you, keeping the gas pedal firmly grounded under his foot till he reached the bar and found you outside by the curb
Trying to ward off a guy with painfully obvious sleazy and malevolent intentions
The car had barely come to a stop when he jumped out of it, taking a stance as tall as can be, his uncovered eye glaring daggers at the creep who, upon noticing the significantly taller man present, was quick to shrivel up and crawl back into the hellhole he’d come out of, allowing you both a sigh of relief before Corpse drove you back to his place
The gravity of the situation only hit your hazy brain properly the following morning when your stomach was finally starting to disagree with the substance the creep undoubtedly inserted in your drink
Corpse was there through it all for you, offering nothing but comforting and reassuring words to bring a smile to your face despite your tear-shiny eyes
Like a true friend would

answering asks.
all anon asks answered below! about new cc eyes, infant cc updates, cc requests + townies.
Tumblr media
hi! omg thank you T-T <3 !! i am going to make complete and sectorial heterochromia skindetail overlays, that's the only thing aside from vampires/werewolf eyes that i still need to do & then i'll upload them
Tumblr media
thank you!!! ❤️ yes, toddlers to elders, and i'll update them for infants as soon as i can as well.
Tumblr media
oh sorry to hear that! normally i do want to fulfill these kind of requests but personally i think adult sims look too young without it, cause they're supposed to in their 40s to 60s and most adults do have some wrinkles there. i could make a simple overlay skin detail to cover them up if you want, but it'd be too much work to make an additional default version for my skins without the wrinkles. and thank you for the kind words <3 !!
Tumblr media
hey AHH thank you, you're too nice <3 🥹 fadia would 100% accept your proposal!! ily have a good day too!!
Tumblr media
hi! i'm sorry, i made the original version like 1.5 years ago and the newer version of them that i uploaded i don't have the psd file for anymore. i'm making a new version of the asteria eyes as i mentioned in my last post with which i'll include the .psd though, and i'll add the old catchlights to it as an alternative.
Tumblr media
maybe in the future i will, but i have to reupload all the thumbnails per swatch and gender for each file by hand so it's just such an annoying process to add more categories for them (and i really dont feel like doing it currently sorry 😫). if you want to you can also do it yourself easily if you don't mind them not having thumbnails with this tutorial.
Tumblr media
hello! thank you ^-^ if it's as easy as just enabling them for infants in sims 4 studio then yes i'll do it asap, otherwise it may take a little longer cause it isn't my priority since it's such old content and i want to update newer things first. the skin will probably
Tumblr media
hi! yes and no lol, i have a few sims up for download under my download tag but there's only a few that are public.
Tumblr media
hi~ i completely forgot i used that on her! i never uploaded that one, i think it's similar to my agave skin (one of the lower opacity swatches would look most like it i think).
Tumblr media
hey! thank you haha!! i'm gonna update all my skins when i can, just depends on when skiniator & sims 4 studio updates since i rely on them for the default files and proper tags ^-^
Tumblr media
i'm still tweaking it a little here and there, when it's done i'll upload it. this ask made me giggle cause idk if its accidental but it sounds like you're annoyed with me over this reshade preset i'm not uploading HAHA

WTW CHARACTER WEEK day 07 ↳ wildcard ; the supporting cast of knights
psd template by @tinytowns
serafine clemonte ➞ kit langley
to put it simply, kit langley did not sign up for this. he had filled in the form for the clemonte corporations internship thinking it would be a stepping stone to further his career in business and he was not expecting 'breaking and entering' to be on his resume when he moves on to a new job. serafine is going to make sure he will be getting a damn good job after all this blows over.
aredhel clemonte ➞ marcus bryce
marcus bryce has always been a gentleman, always was, always will be. but aredhel much preferred him playing dirty in this twisted arkridge game of power. they have grown up the same way — under the thumb of the round table, in the deep of downtown arkridge, within the sanctuary of avalon. they have been given the chance to build a better place, to replace those that are corrupt. and they will do it all in their image, together.
maribelle clemonte ➞ morgan van doren
morgan van doren is dangerous. she knows who everyone from the round table is behind the mask, and she can easily spill a secret or more to anyone who flashed just enough dough her way. hell, she is probably willing to trade family secrets just for the fun of it. she didn’t spend over a decade being king arthur’s most valuable advisor without knowing everyone who's anyone.
storm clemonte ➞ blackbird
the first thing she notices is the cigarette hanging lazily from his lips. then, it is his jawline, his nose, and she is memorising his face. without the mask and the weapons, and instead, wearing a red biker jacket with a half unbuttoned black shirt and matching trousers, blackbird looks so different, so much more at ease than his alter ego. yet, he still carries himself the same way: headstrong and confident, with the bite to back up the bark.
gen tag!! (send an ask to be added/removed) @kazino @halcionic @cianawrites @janaisvu @ninazeniks @ambrosiadarling @perditism @serpentarii @seasteading @lasbrumas @sympathyhouse

Note
hey, i just saw your post with the new faceclaims - the psd looks great but, in my opinion, is heavily whitewashing, so i would consider a different one or editing the one you used
hello hello! first things first, the concern, needless to say, is very much understandable and appreciated but it was already in my mind regardless. as far as we know luke is white so i suppose there's no issue there, as for anya who is half indian, i had already edited the picture since the psd did make her look much paler than what you saw. naturally if she still looks too pale i can make the shade a deeper red but i figured it looked good enough, my bad on my end ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Insult to Injury: The Director's Cut — Ch01 [Revised]
Warnings: Intense scenes of violence including torture, sexual content, nudity and language, allusions to childhood trauma/abuse.
Rating: M
Genre: Crime/Drama with a side of romance.
Summary: A troubled psychiatrist desperate to escape past criminal ties is drawn into a far more insidious schism. [Post-Skyfall, Pre-NTtD]
07/15/2022 — This is going to be the final rewrite. Aside from some big fixes (Madeleine’s profession as a psychatrist rather than psychologist, aging her up by one year, switching "college" to "university", giving the PSD its own name, etc) I made an effort to tighten up the dialogue and characterization overall. At the time I was originally working on this (2020-2021) I pulled a lot of information from fan-wikis; as such, there were some conflicting details I overlooked for the sake of convenience. It still might not be perfect, but I’d rather move forward than stay trapped in development hell.
Whether you’ve been reading since early 2020, or are new to the story in time for 007 Fest 2022, I hope you enjoy what’s in store! —Dorminchu
— ACT I —
“Most rich people have a gangster in their ancestry somewhere.” ― Ken Follett, Winter of the World
I: FORGIVING WHO YOU ARE, FOR WHAT YOU STAND TO GAIN
2003; Madeleine was eighteen, fresh out of Ermitage International School. Just a week before, she’d talked things out with her academic counsellor. Mental health was a very important subject to her. She had always admired those who could help others who lacked the knowledge or courage to take the first step. She wanted to go into psychiatry. Looking back on it, she probably sounded like every other self-impressed trust-fund looking to cajole his or her way into advanced placements.
The counsellor simply sat behind his desk and listened, nodding every once in a while. He was getting paid either way. “Have you decided what university you will be attending?”
Madeleine explained that she had put in a few different applications already.
The counsellor said, “These positions go quickly. Put in a couple more. Oxford is a good choice.”
Madeleine paused. Money was not exactly a problem for someone attending Ermitage, but she didn’t want to go flaunting this around. She thanked him for his time and information, and left.
The very next morning Madeleine opened her laptop—a birthday gift from her father, kept for convenience’s sake—to a series of emails confirming her acceptance into Oxford. Tuition payments. High-priority placements. So on, so forth.
Her father never wrote. Never gave any indication that he had a daughter in his life, until she had gotten her baccalaureate.
With tears in her eyes, she read the messages over to make sure she was not mistaken. She composed herself, called her Aunt Droit and relayed the message. The tremble in her own voice mistaken for elation.
But the warmth in Droit’s voice stayed with Madeleine for years. “Congratulations, dear. You’ve worked very hard at this.”
Madeleine bit the inside of her cheek and hung up.
She spent the next four years at Oxford, plus one in the Sorbonne during her residency. Once she was a practicing psychiatrist, she could support herself without outside interference.
She embraced the temporary comfort of acquaintances who knew her as Madeleine Swann; disciplined in her studies, but always cordial to the part-time students. The type of person who was drawn into the orbit of socialisation. A tough nut to crack. Colleagues sought her advice on research projects. Some vying to get into her good graces. A couple guys might ask for her number and end up studying together for weeks. Most were appreciative, but eventually Madeleine earned an unshakeable reputation for being frigid.
Of course, not everyone was so disingenuous. Madeleine attended her fair share of lunches and off-campus events for the sake of networking opportunities, melding into a small-knit group of undergraduates with comparable grades. Arnaud, who was studying to be a clinical psychologist, only stuck out in her mind because he kept finding excuses to hang out between classes. He may as well have been making conversation to a brick wall, but his presence gave her an excuse to get out of parties and potential dates. She let him accompany her to and from the library without complaint. Even after he’d graduated, they still kept in touch.
After becoming a licensed psychiatrist in 2008, she immediately turned to non-profit work. That summer, there was a water crisis in Bolivia. Tuberculosis outbreak in Laos. 2009; aftermath of a military coup in Ethiopia.
In the spring of 2011, she moved back into Paris. Cycling between outpatient management at the hospital and private clinic; in the latter case, complete with her own office. The casual anecdotes she provided to her co-workers were about as as droll as her taste in décor—with the occasional concern about her walls being a little sterile, always passed along by the secretary. Not even a picture of yourself, Dr. Swann?
Out of the blue, Arnaud contacted her over email. He was a clinical psychologist now, working just a couple blocks away. How would she like to meet up again, just for old time’s sake?
Detached from the stress of a full-time enrolment, this gesture lost its annoyance. It was honestly flattering. She wasn’t that busy.
They caught up over in a local bar Madeleine forgot the name of. Arnaud was busy teaching, over in Hauts-de-Seine. He was a Senior Psychologist now. How was she doing, these days?
She mentioned the clinic, no problems there. The hospital as well. She had her own new circle of friends. He kept looking at her as she talked. On impulse, she offered to buy him shots. A belated celebration of their graduations.
Arnaud said, “You, drink? I’ve never seen you touch a glass.”
“That’s because I don’t, usually.” She took half a sip. Cringed. “Sorry, it’s been a while.”
“You don’t have to finish that.”
“Neither do you.”
Arnaud chuckled.
She said, “My mother used to drink a lot. I guess I thought I would always turn out like her one day, but that’s silly isn’t it.” She finished her drink. “You haven’t even touched yours. I bet I could drink your ass under this table.” She took his glass before he could so much as speak, downed it. She grinned. “See?”
Cut to half-an-hour later; Madeleine, vomiting her sandwich from six hours ago into the toilet while Arnaud kept her head up.
She didn’t remember much besides waking up on the couch in her apartment, still in her clothes from the night before.
“How are you feeling?” said Arnaud.
Madeleine groaned. She grabbed throw-pillow and mashed her face into it. “What time is it?”
“It’s just past two.”
Madeleine lay there until the faint odour of stale vomit was no longer tolerable. Cursing, she swatted it aside. “You didn’t have to stay.”
“It was no trouble,” he said. “You never told me you had family.”
“What?”
“That’s the first time you’ve mentioned any relatives.”
“I was drunk,” said Madeleine. “Don’t worry about it.” Madeleine lowered her hands, squinting at the light. She could make out his face. He looked like he hadn’t slept very well. “Well—what did I say?”
“Something about an aunt, and your mother. I didn’t catch all of it.”
A pit in her stomach that had nothing to do with her recent choices. Madeleine looked Arnaud in-between the eyes. “I’d rather forget about this, if it’s all the same to you.”
Arnaud frowned. “You’re not troubling me at all.”
From then on, she’d accompany him for walks in the Parc Georges-Brassens if the weather permitted. See him for lunch, or dinner. From every other weekend to every weekend.
As the months progressed it was difficult to find excuses to remain platonic. Not because she felt any particular, immediate attraction. She just couldn’t bring herself to relinquish her grip on someone so easily accessible. A heartless woman would string him along with false hope and drop him at the first sign of commitment; Madeleine accepted his offer to cohabit his apartment in Vaugirard. Separate bedrooms. Plenty of space to keep to themselves.
In lieu of a car, they’d share public transit. He’d tease her for checking the corners of the bus each time, but he would also wait up for her on long shifts. Whomever came home first fixed dinner, so on, so forth.
Two years later, they were still together. Her co-workers wondered how she and Arnaud could balance their careers and relationship when she made three times as much as he did in a year.
In the winter of 2013 Madeleine applied for a position as psychiatrist with the Médecins Sans Frontières. A week into March, she got an email confirming her placement. A three-month mission in Conakry, Guinea, May through July, with the possibility of an extension. Madeleine had relayed this information to both the clinic and the hospital, so there was no worry.
Now it was April. Sitting in the comfort of her office, reading over electronic pamphlets and advisories. In a couple weeks she would be working in far less hospitable conditions. Non-profit work always looked good on a résumé.
Checking her laptop, tabbed over to a different page: Guinean Visa and Passport Requirements: All non-ECOWAS foreigners are required to have a valid Guinean visa and a vaccination card in order to be granted entry. Yellow fever vaccination cards are verified upon entry into the country at Gbessia. Approval for the visa necessitated a seventy-two-hour window of clearance.
She sat back with a headache settling just around the base of her skull. Alone with four polished wooden walls and the analog clock, the fluorescent lighting fixed her to a single moment in time.
A knock at her door snapped her out of contemplation. It was the senior consultant. Madeleine motioned him in, closing the laptop.
“I’m surprised you don’t sleep in that office,” he said.
“That would save some money on bus fare.” She opened the cabinet of folders under her desk, filing away documents from that day’s session.
“How’s Arnaud?”
“He’s doing well.”
The consultant nodded. As she packed up, walked towards her door he was looking at her with something close to sympathy. “You are serious about this mission in Conakry?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
His face darkened. “Have you seen the news lately?”
“Oh, I doubt they would be looking for applicants if the situation were that severe.” Madeleine smiled dryly. “But, there is always a chance I’ll die doing what I love. I can’t think of a better way to go.”
The consultant’s uneasy laugh caused the secretary to glance at them through the doorframe. Madeleine hit the light on the way out.
Late at night, the weather was on that precipice between winter and spring. An overcast sky, grey and still. By the time Madeleine was opening the door to the apartment, she was grateful to get away from the chill seeping into her skin.
Arnaud, still dressed for work, was sitting on the sofa with last month’s issue of The International Journal Of Psychoanalysis. Without her pitching in, he’d be working part-time shifts at the clinic and teaching night classes just to make end’s meet. He looked up and said, “You’re back late. I took care of dinner.”
Madeleine shrugged out of her coat. “Thanks. I got held up at the clinic.”
“What for?”
She went over to the closet and hung her coat up. “Just lost track of time. I had a pretty busy shift. I’ve been weighing my options lately. This year, I’ll probably be moving to a different clinic. I’ll have to relocate to Spain, or Switzerland. Drag you along.” She looked at him because he hadn’t said anything. “You have enough to worry about.”
Arnaud readjusted his glasses. “I’ve got my degree. I can get a job just about anywhere you go.”
For the most part, Arnaud was easy to live with. Their schedules did not always leave time to get acquainted with each other’s inner thoughts.
Madeleine said, “Can I get your coat?”
He looked up at her, sitting up and shrugging out of it. “Yes, thank you.”
She took his coat, walked back over to the closet, paused. “I put in a position with MSF a few weeks ago. It’s possible I won’t be back until August.” The silence protracted. Madeleine came back into the living room. “I meant to tell you earlier.”
“No, no. I’m grateful you decided it would be convenient for you to tell me at all.”
Madeleine stiffened. “Don’t start this now.”
“Last year,” said Arnaud flatly, “you were gone for six months on some psychiatry tour, you wouldn’t tell me where. This year I had to ask around your office. Conakry? You know what’s happening over there?”
“That’s exactly why I need to go. They’re in need someone with my skillset.”
“You ever take a moment to consider what would happen if you don’t come back?”
“It’s a risk I am willing to take.”
He scoffed. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me about this?”
“Because you’ve never volunteered outside of a mental health ward, let alone this country.”
“Not everyone has the luxury of working eight-hour shifts or leaving the country for months at a time.”
Madeleine stiffened. He had no right to use this against her. Everyone made mistakes, it had just slipped her mind, and now he wanted to turn it into a bigger issue. “I don’t need to be paid to make a difference in someone’s life. Why is that so difficult to understand?”
“Jesus, listen to yourself. This isn’t a competition.”
“If you’re so worried about it, maybe you should come along. Make sure I’m not in any real danger. Why not take some pictures while you are at it? You can put those on your wall at work.”
Each time they went out to dinners with old colleagues, now, they would say—oh, you’re still doing volunteer work abroad? That’s so admirable, Madeleine—and Arnaud nodded along with a tight smile. Each of them had found success in their respective fields. Arnaud and his colleagues spoke about their personal lives with an ease, an intimacy which Madeleine could never quite reciprocate.
Arnaud took his glasses off. “Right. I’m no different that that furniture set. Something you buy to make your life a little more complete.”
Madeleine’s eyes hardened. “That’s a ridiculous thing to say.”
Arnaud shut the magazine. “Aren’t you going to have some dinner?”
“What about you?”
“I was out with some friends. I’ve already eaten. You can have some if you like.”
Madeleine frowned. She went into the kitchen. Leftovers from the night before. A quiet dinner for one.
“I should have told you,” she said again, while Arnaud came back, prepped the dishwasher to run. “I’m sorry.”
He paused with his thumb on the extra rinse button. “You should have your own life and interests, outside of mine. I’ve never volunteered abroad. I’m sure it’s very rewarding.”
He walked out. Madeleine could not argue to an empty room.
By the end of April, she was getting ready to depart. Arnaud was still asleep when she left for her 06:30 flight.
The situation in Guinea had not improved so much as stabilised. Madeleine was assured that the MSF members on-site had already taken precautions, and she’d be instructed further on what to do upon her arrival. She was advised to vaccinate, just to be on the safe side―according to her medical records, she would not need another round of shots until 2015.
Sometime around February, a group of diamond miners in South Africa had been exposed to an unidentified gas while working in the lowest depths. There were multiple deaths, and far more instances of atrioventricular block and cardiac arrest, ataxia, blindness, nausea and vomiting; all symptoms related to blister agent poisoning.
The official statement put forth claimed the gas came from a hidden stash of chemical weapons by terrorists. It had been struck mistakenly and exposed the workers to its effects. The pictures of the victims plastered all over news sites were reminiscent of chemical burns. So the mine had to be shut down for an indefinite period.
In the lobby of the Grand Hotel de L’independence Madeleine was introduced to the Project Coordinator; a shorter man in his mid-forties with a photogenic smile and toupee. He clasped her hand in both of his clammy ones and said: “Very glad you’ve made it, Doctor. We need you on-site as soon as possible.”
By the time she got to her room on the second floor, a fine sheen of sweat had built on her skin. Her luggage was waiting for her on the bench. Off-white walls and bedsheets, a couple wooden chairs. One lamp on the wall beside the desk, two flanking the headboard. The sofa beside the bed looked older than the rest of the furniture. The red and blue pillows as a thoughtful accent were probably new. Everything was clean, though the flatscreen television looked out-of-place. The air quality inside the room was stuffy. No point in lingering here.
On-site at Donka Hospital she met up with the Medical Coordinator and Psychosocial Unit. An isolation ward had been established before the MSF’s involvement, but they were at full capacity; the workers coming and going from there were all clad in full-body personal protective equipment. Another section of the grounds had been set aside and fenced off; rows of tents all lined up. No matter where you went the stench of rot always seemed to hang pervasively in the air.
The other members on the Psychosocial Unit were as amicable as the situation permitted. There wasn’t time to get to know each other outside of their professions and the given assignment.
All of them were good on paper but betrayed their inexperience through a shared level of idealism. Fresh into their respective fields, they were coming here not simply to lend their aid to those in need, but to make a difference. They were all observing the crises of the rest of the world through the same lens of journalism and commercialized empathy. It could not prepare them for the experience of actually sitting down and listening to what their patients talked about with prosaic sincerity.
Conversations were conducted in French, or else by way of an interpreter, though the sentiment in the voices of these patients was palpable. Death was an expected outcome. Implications of negligence or corruption in the government were a common topic of discussion among patients and hospital staff alike.
There was a growing disparity between the narrative put into circulation by the news and what was happening in the field. According to several members of the MSF and the staff at Donka, the media had grossly exaggerated the problem. The workers whose condition had kicked off the initial “chemicals in the mine” story had been subjected to long-term exposure. Most of the patients that came through after that were not as grievously injured, but showed traces of the same poisoning. The photos created a narrative that incited concern in the public eye and incentivized the need for donations. Now the government wanted to cover up the severity of the situation as not to detract from any potential business opportunities; until the MSF got involved, they were only employing the most rudimentary of safety procedures.
The rest of June crawled by without any major incidents. By July the MSF were in the process of dealing with an influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs). There had been a flurry of similar incidents in surrounding prefectures. Thanks to the cooperation with the local civilians and tireless efforts on part of the medical staff and MSF Medical Unit, there had been a forty-five-percent decrease in fatalities compared to the initial wave back in February.
But the hospital was overwhelmed. The topic of insurgence was the new favourite with patients; a consequence of the lack of tangible progress coupled with deep-seated mistrust of government officials. Now the Force Sécurité/Protection, or FSP, had been brought on in collaboration with an additional Protective Services Detail (PSD) by the name of SFT, to ensure the hospital and surrounding property remained untouched.
The latter was a point of contention. Accepting outside assistance from the government directly, rather than working out a compromise, allowed the possibility for interference. But the Project Coordinator was in full support of additional protection around the hospital, as well as the hotel.
Each morning, before work, Madeleine and the rest of the Psychosocial Unit were reviewing protocol in the event of an attack. Outright criticism of methods in handling the situation was discouraged. Madeleine was savvy enough to keep herself abreast of any controversy. For the rest of the Psychosocial Unit, they were either too naïve or willing to look the other way.
The one exception to this was the Vaccines Medical Advisor, Dr. Kessler. He worked on the Medical Unit. Madeleine had cooperated with him a handful of times at the behest of the Medical Coordinator and gathered that Dr. Kessler had gotten into a dispute with the Medical Team a couple days ago. Madeleine wasn’t around to hear the details, but some of the younger MSF members talked about him less discreetly. Kessler was just out-of-touch. He lacked consideration for the emotional states of those affected severely by these recent attacks. He was jumping to conclusions with faulty information passed on by hearsay.
As the situation in the hospital became more desperate he would stay behind on-site, late into the evening. Whenever they had a break, he would disappear on calls. He acknowledged her judgements but remained standoffish whenever he was not working. She found nothing wrong with his conduct.
Over one break, he said, “I was supposed to be home last month, but with the situation being what it is, I decided to stay on until things are resolved.” He did not sit down, his attention turned towards the path back to the infected ward. “Bringing in a proper security detail at this stage—we’re sitting ducks. Who the hell does the Project Coordinator think we’re fooling?” Madeleine ignored him. “Dr. Swann. The Medical Coordinator tells me you’ve been involved in volunteer work for a while. Perhaps they would be more willing to listen to someone with your expertise.”
“I was not selected for my personal opinions.”
Dr. Kessler chuckled. “Well, may I run something by you? In confidence.” Madeleine glanced over at him. “I think, what we are dealing with here is something more dangerous than a few terrorists. When these IDPs come in, with all of the cases I've seen, there is no evidence of the chemical agent on their clothing. The mines should have been shut down months ago, but they have not ceased operation.” He looked at her meaningfully. “Tell me, how does this make sense?”
A moment of recognition passed between them. She could not acknowledge him outright. Her father had many enemies and it was foolhardy to assume they would not follow her to the ends of the earth. She looked at Dr. Kessler and saw an honest man. She said,
“With all due respect, I wouldn’t know about the greater picture. I don’t want to say anything if I cannot back it up. It seems strange because we don't have all the information to explain it, but there must be a logical reason.”
Dr. Kessler nodded. Probably marking her down as another of those young idealists, just here to get her stamp.
So Madeleine changed the topic to something more palatable: “You have been late the last several times we worked together. May I ask why?” His expression faltered into a temporary window of vulnerability. “I shouldn’t have been so blunt. But you leave often enough on calls, and it appears to be taking a toll on you. The medical staff are not in a reasonable state of mind.”
“That’s all right. It’s just my wife and son. This past month has been no easier on them.” Then he looked at her. “A lot of these people we care for don’t have the luxury of a plane ticket home. Sometimes, I think it would be easier to do this work alone.”
Madeleine did not anticipate the conversation to take such a turn, nor did she plan to divulge much about herself. But she could not deflect from answers as she could in the clinic, and Kessler seemed forthright enough to warrant a harmless response. “I know what you mean. Right now, I’m living with a friend. We graduated from university together. He tends to lead his own life while I am away, but he is very understanding of what I do.”
“It’s a great deal to ask of someone.” Madeleine inclined her head in his direction. Kessler’s mouth was set, and his eyes behind the glasses disillusioned. “Few people would devote themselves to a thankless vocation as this out of the goodness of their hearts. Just remember that not everyone is going to want to stick around until you decide you’re ready to settle down.”
Madeleine’s smile did not touch her eyes. “He’s a psychologist. We have an understanding, that’s all. I don’t bother him about his social life.”
Kessler shook his head. In a few minutes they were back to work, as if their conversation had never happened.
As July carried on, she found her mind snagging easily on technicalities. She became less tolerant of the Psychological Unit’s personal hang-ups with the lack of resources and lack of any obvious moral closure. Smell of rot and disinfectant permeated into her clothing and hair until she had begun to associate the smell itself with a lack of progress.
She kept the window in her hotel room cracked, just to let some fresher air in. The room smelled like gasoline and sweat, but it was better than the alternatives. A little noise pollution kept her aware of her surroundings, alone with her own mind and the recorder. Conversations with the IDPs and their families circled back to death and terrorism. An overwhelming fear of retaliation from some formless, looming insurrection.
Madeleine paused the recording. She checked the time and cursed under her breath. Just past one in the morning. In six hours she would return to Donka Hospital and repeat the process. In a week she would be on a flight back to Paris.
Outside her window she heard the distant voice of Dr. Kessler. He was conversing in German, from a few storeys down, right by the outdoor pool. As Madeleine came over to the window she understood him clearly:
“…we’ve seen evidence of PMCs coming through, exhibiting the same symptoms as the IDPs we treated back in February. How we can expect to make any progress if the Project Coordinator refuses to bring this up? We’re putting God-knows how many lives at risk waiting for a vaccine that we don’t know if we need—and even so, it won’t be ready for another month. There’s not enough time to justify keeping silent about….”
Madeleine closed the window carefully. She’d never been one to intrude on personal matters.
That night Madeleine’s dreams were interspersed with the sounds of sirens and heavy traffic. She woke up the next morning, unrested and sore, an hour early. Watching the shadows on the ceiling cross over peeling paint. At 07:00 she got ready for the day. Exiting her room, she found the Project Coordinator by the elevators, talking with the head of security from SFT and a couple Donka Hospital staff Madeleine knew by sight but not intimately.
Apparently a surplus of medical supplies had arrived by truck, around three or four in the morning. Several members of the Medical Unit had stayed on-site in order to determine if everything had been accounted for only to find out it was rigged. Thanks to the intervention of the PSD, losses were minimal. Several doctors had suffered chemical exposure and were currently isolated from the rest of the IDPs to receive immediate medical attention. Others, such as Dr. Kessler and the psychologist consultant from the Psychosocial Team, had been less fortunate.
Now there was additional pressure from the hospital doctors and Logistics Team to begin moving the high-risk patients to a safer area. The fear that this story would circulate and any chance of obtaining additional supplies would be discouraged could not be ruled out. So they would not be reporting this as a chemical attack, but as an interception of a failed attack by local terrorists.
The head of security, Lucifer Safin, noticed her first. Black suit, a leather gun holster on his left side. Distinctly scarred from his right temple to the base of his left jaw. Too intricate to be leprosy or a typical burn wound, yet the structure of his eyes and nose remained intact. Possibly chloracne? “Dr. Swann. I understand that you were one of the last to speak with Dr. Kessler?”
Up until this point, they'd not talked. She might just catch a glimpse of him walking with a couple soldiers in the morning heat; in spite of the weather she had never seen Safin without leather gloves.
There was a hushed quality to his voice which might indicate internal damage, but he was able to project without difficulty. Accent would suggest a Czech or Russian ethnicity, but his complexion and eye colour invited room for speculation. His manner wasn’t explicitly taciturn, more akin to the disconcerting silence one might experience while looking into a body of still-water—met only with your reflection.
“Yes,” said Madeleine, “but that was nearly five days ago.”
Safin glanced at the Project Coordinator. “I’ll speak with her alone.”
“Of course.”
They walked down the length of the hall back to her room. His gait was purposeful and direct.
Of all the useless things to be thinking about, his name was what stuck out to her. After growing up in a family with fake passports and birth certificates it was possible Lucifer was simply an alias.
Her attention went to the window. She’d forgotten to lock it.
He said, “I have just a few questions. What was the extent of your relationship to Dr. Kessler?”
“We talked once or twice. I didn’t know him that well. He told me he had stayed behind, in order to assist the medical unit. And he has―had a family, back home. He seemed close to them.”
“You have worked with him before?”
“Never directly. I have my own responsibilities with the Psychosocial Unit.” Safin said nothing. He was looking around carefully at the room, the furniture. His eyes came to rest on the window. He walked over to it. “From what I have gathered, Dr. Kessler and the Project Coordinator had opposing views on protocol.”
“Did he speak to you about these views?”
Madeleine thought about their last conversation. The desperate look in Kessler's eyes. That moment of connection, tacit and fragile.
“He expressed, in confidence, that he did not understand the Project Coordinator’s hesitance to bring in a security detail. He considered the possibility of an attack by outside forces to be imminent.”
“You are aware,” Safin said, “that once humanitarian action is subsumed into broader military and political intervention, it may be perceived as interference.”
He was looking at her closely. The early morning light put his disfigurement into a new, unsettling clarity. Madeleine said, “I think you would be better off asking the other doctors about this.”
“We have video surveillance in place on the Grand Hotel de L’independence. At around one in the morning, Dr. Kessler exited the building and contacted an unknown party by mobile phone. A minute later, you were at the window.”
“Yes, I had forgotten to close it.”
“Your room was the only one to show signs of activity at that hour.”
“I was reviewing my notes from that day’s session. I heard a voice from outside, though not clearly. It was distracting me, so I got up and closed the window. I don’t know what the conversation was about.”
“This is common for you?”
“I left the window open because otherwise I seem to find myself trapped with the smell of rotting flesh.”
Safin’s expression became easier to read, but not in a positive sense. Madeleine kept any apprehension away from her face and her voice tightly controlled.
“Without information about Dr. Kessler’s lifestyle outside the MSF, I cannot give you an answer in good faith. His work was sound. Whatever he said to me was assumed to be in confidence. Many people say things to one another in what they believe to be confidence that they would not admit to otherwise. If I had reason to suspect he was unfit to work, I would have contacted the Medical Advisor immediately.”
Safin held her gaze for much longer than was necessary. She did not dare avert her face. He said,
“The Project Coordinator is waiting for you downstairs. We appreciate your cooperation.”
The rest of the day she spent in a different wing of the hospital. The Psychosocial Unit was cut down from four members to two. Another day of thankless work that never seemed quite good enough. That evening, Madeleine was informed she would have to stay on to make up for lost ground, at least until August. The MSF offered a lot of flowery, empty apologies which she accepted because there was nothing else to do.
When she’d arrived at the airport she could stave off her doubts with shallow, private reassurances. Right now, you are just Dr. Swann the psychiatrist. Your father is many miles away and he won’t contact you again unless you call him to grovel. No one else will come looking for you in a place like this. Undoubtedly this hospital was safer under the watch of the Security Manager from SFT than it would have been with the FSPs alone. Why was she still tense?
By August, the sunnier days gave way almost completely to rainfall. The wing of the hospital that had suffered the chemical attack was still closed and they had lost several more staff members. Madeleine and the remaining MSF were encouraged by the Project Coordinator to take earlier shifts. Progress remained steady, neither faltering nor immediate, but there was no clear resolution in sight. The stench of rot imprinted into Madeleine’s senses to the point where she no longer consciously registered her own nausea. Discontent among the staff continued to bubble under the surface on account of the closed wing and bad press.
At night, Madeleine would pore over her notes, listening to the passing automobiles and indistinct conversation. She drew the curtains in her hotel room and tied her hair back. Even indoors it was impossible to avoid the cloying embrace of humidity.
The day started as just another humid morning at six AM. Madeleine rose and prepared herself mentally for the day ahead. There was an inordinate of activity on the road outside her window as she got dressed and left. Madeleine was thinking about how stress kept her mind working late into the night, but her position with the Psychosocial Unit barred her from working too many hours in the hospital. She was keeping up the pace, not yet to the point of exhaustion, but if they were seriously going to ask her to carry on into September she would have to find an alternative.
Outside the hotel she met up with the Medical Coordinator and a few members of the Logistics Unit. They spent about ten minutes standing idle in the humid air, too weary to speak. The usual FSP were on-guard by the hotel. Ever since the attack on Donka Hospital there were more of them standing around.
An unmarked black Jeep pulled up. The Medical Coordinator went up to it first. One of the FSP shouted in French. The Medical Coordinator’s head burst over the exterior of the vehicle, and Madeleine. The body slumped like a doll to the dirt. Madeleine wanted to scream but could not. She turned and saw Peter Miller, head of Logistics, facing down the barrel of a rifle. “Where are the rest of the MSF? Why are they not at the hospital?” Half a dozen more men stood behind him, all armed.
Miller opened his hands in supplication. “I don't understand what you're—”
Two shots. Miller joined the Medical Coordinator. The insurgent was looking at Madeleine.
“You are from the hospital?” The rifle jutted into her sternum. Warm blood spattered across her skin and clothes, pooling at her feet. The sight of dry earth briefly mixed up with wooden floorboards. “You allowed them to experiment on us and our families like dogs! Who gave you the orders?”
She tried to say, I'm sorry, I don’t understand, but all that came out of her was a weak little gasp. One PSD broke from the group and came directly toward her.
She caught his black eyes, under the balaclava. The scarification impossible to mistake. He turned and shot the insurgent twice in the the head. He grabbed Madeleine by the waist, the way you might handle an animal, and opened the backdoor of the Jeep. Shoved her into the backseat. Checked the seatbelt. Shut the door. The front doors reopened. Two men entered the car. The hands on the steering wheel were mottled.
Additional round of gunfire set her into a fit of trembling. She ducked with her hands over her nape. The distinctive voice in the front seat overtaken by the roaring in her ears. She heard a voice whispering, “Ne me tuez pas. Je n’ai rien fait. Je ne sais rien.”

AND THE RESULTS ARE IN!
Tumblr media
The winner of the Lemon Daydream survey drawing is... @clxrissadalloway !!! Congratulations to @clxrissadalloway! I will be messaging you shortly. For everyone else who entered and did not win this time, look out for future drawings, I'll try to give more opportunities for those who would like to win. Now for the survey results! (This will not be all of the results, just the ones that I think are relevant to most.)
Tumblr media
Discord coming out wayyyy in the lead. Where else are you guys roleplaying though? Other had 19 votes, reddit? Drop it in the comments, I wanna know.
Tumblr media
Most people rank themselves right in the middle between complete novice and expert. I do see that a good portion of people do consider themselves beginners so I will try to keep my docs as easy to edit as possible or warn if a doc is for more experienced editors but I will never make anything public that exceeds "average" skill level.
Tumblr media
Meyer! The new baby won! I really thought it would be Eureka, the long-time fav but this was really interesting. Sorry to Yuzu, always gets the least love. Very happy that you guys still love my first! Congrats as well to Key Lime!
Tumblr media
You guys do love neutrals, probably why Meyer has been getting a lot of love. Overall though, we're looking at most people liking neutrals, dark, colorful, and monochrome.
Tumblr media
I did NOT think this would be such an even split. I will try to make more portrait docs when I think the style suits it.
Tumblr media
I hear you loud and clear, dark academia and stuff that looks like PSDs but entirely made in docs. I definitely plan to release something dark academia, not next but soon (you'll see why with the next result.) As for PSD looking, I will always try to get close to that but they are trickier (and more intimidating) for the less skilled editors. Trust me, I could easily make something that looks like a PSD banner in docs, most people just wouldn't know what to do. Also witchy/vampy and sci-fi/futuristic, I hear you, they're coming, for sure.
Tumblr media
CRIMINAL RECORD/PERSONNEL RECORD GOV DOC. Yep! You're getting it! I'm working on MURCOTT now and I plan to have her done soon depending on my commissions workload. I loved the results of this one because the ones that were my favorite were also yours. There's a chance I will do all of these eventually.
Tumblr media
Abilities/skills/powers. Yep, from now on, I will include a page or section for these! Also, the lit sample/extra page I will keep and include. Theme song/playlist link, it's one line, enough of you like it, I'll make it happen. Voice claim! I will be putting in appearance sections from now on a spot for "Voice", you can make that a voice claim name, a link, or a description of how their voice sounds. Positive and negative traits! On the personality section of future docs I will have several spots for positive and negative traits. Not neutral traits, just because I think it's clunky and personally... (I think neutral traits are dumb, decide whether your curiosity is positive or negative, stop floating around in the middle.) Lol! Mostly kidding. (mostly...) Family section! Yes, on all future connections pages, there will be a section for family! Mother, father, siblings, other, going to give five spots that you can alter to be any sort of relation. Make it childhood best friend, dog, I don't care. Navigation. I will include on docs that allow for it. If it goes with the design of the doc, absolutely, I'll include it. WELL. We did it! Thank you so much for your continued support and for all of your that answered the last question of the survey: <3 LOVE <3 So much love, you guys are the best. Keep an eye out for more and stay awesome.

💝
✧ - send me a 💝 and I'll rate your theme out of 10!
AAAHHH the princess of graphics herself <3 yes I would LOVE to rate your theme!!
✧ mobile: 7.5/10
THE CHIAKI GIF HEADER IS SO CUTE AUGHGUGHUGHH her little heart eyes!!!! instant points for this. it is so so sweet and I could stare at it all day <333 beyond that, I love your title font -- it is Very You -- and I think comboing pink/purple is a good choice!! the exact shades you picked make your text a little hard for me to read, though. idk my eyes are just weird (I do need new glasses OTL), but they feel too low-contrast. I almost wonder how it would look if the background & text colors were swapped!
lastly, while I love your icon (the little border is a wonderful touch), it doesn't quiiiite match the rest of the theme. I see that you put a PSD over it to make the image a little warmer, which definitely helps, but the blue still throws it off just a tiny bit to me. still, good vibes overall <3 cute theme with cute girls!
✧ desktop: 9.5/10
I am SOO in love with your desktop theme -- when I remade my tumblr, I was kind of hoping I'd be able to track it down and use it myself! I just can't get enough of the sidebar.... the little circle icons are so classy, and then when the extended menu animates open and you see the little stars... ughhhh it's sooo aesthetically pleasing. and I have to gush over the fonts too lol, the italic font w/ the tiny sans-serif is a sweet and feminine combination.
you've coordinated each element of the theme to make it floaty and dreamy: the shade of Hikari's eyes goes well w/ the background image of the clouds, which furthers the "evening sky" theme you have going w/ the sidebar stars (and your background is pixel art, which kind of fits w/ the Chiaki portrait you have!). it feels ethereal with the words "fall back / delve further" to switch between pages. I would like to get lost in your blog forever pls.
I just have a couple of nitpicks -- one is that the post data is difficult to read on the side. the light gray doesn't contrast enough w/ the purple to my eyes. the other is that your blog is very heavily left-aligned, leaving a lot of empty space on the right. this isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's just that more centered blogs are my personal taste.
altogether such a joy to look at though! I think of the song "Dream" by CircusP ft. Luka when I see your theme <3 thanks for sending this in!!!

hey there! can I ask what psd you used, or a tutorial on how you get the purple so smooth in this gifset (dinahlaurellancesource(.)tumblr(.)com/post/707525976560746496). It's so pretty and every time I try it, the gif looks grainy and low quality, but yours (especially your purples!) looks really high quality! Thanks for any help!
helloooo!
am chuffed to bits that you like the purples in my gifs :D it’s kind of my signature so it’s nice to know that you think it’s high quality!
I am a bit of a grandma so I’m not sure if this is actually going to work, but if you try this link, you should be able to access the psds for that set: https://file.io/S9r0m9yHReou
to understand what I’m about to tell you, make sure you look at the psd as it should make more sense seeing that and the steps under the cut. I’ll try to talk you through how you get from this:
Tumblr media
to this:
Tumblr media
it’s not an exact science (or art maybe) but the graininess is something I have struggled with too. what I find helps is just trial and error really. and purple is much easier to achieve when you already have blue or green in the gif somewhere, or with a character whose skin tone can take a bit more colour balance.
we start with this, laurel in bare face psd:
Tumblr media
the hint of green in that original scene is basically enough. so what you start with after brightening it up (brightness/contrast, levels, curves, exposure)
Tumblr media
is you add colour balance to make more bluish or greenish in the background.
Tumblr media
I then usually do a vibrance layer bc her face looks a lil orange and I need to turn down the saturation. along with that my standard selective colour layer that I use basically in every psd is turning up blacks slightly - that might help a tiny bit with the graininess. after that in a new selective colour layer, you max out the cyans and blacks and reduce the yellows to zero in greens and - this is the important part - keep magentas at 100%. there’s probs some fancy sciencey or graphic design term for why this is but basically your key to avoid graininess is to keep magentas high ish.
Tumblr media
I then repeat that same selective colour layer for greens. after that, you move onto cyans as that’s your next colour that you’re going to change.
Tumblr media
you’re already starting to see the purple coming through. again, you keep magentas and blacks to the max, turn down cyans and yellows completely. what that does is, the cyans in that gif, the purple is enhanced, and because the magentas are kept up there is v little graininess.
the magic is now happening! new selective colour layer, for blues this time. and you can tweak this based on what shade of purple or pink you want. i was going for more light pink here which is why i kept in the yellows. but you can play around with it to get the colour you want - generally if you reduce the yellows you’ll get a purple closer to blue. it shouldn’t be grainy provided you keep the magentas and blacks at 100% again.
Tumblr media
and then finally, if you’re not happy with the shade of pink or purple or you want to tweak it more, you can add a final selective colour layer this time for magentas. I was going for a specific pink colour as this was what my good friend @laurellance requested but you can play around with this a bit too. just be careful with magenta layers as if you turn down the cyan too much here you might end up with it being grainy. but the tricky is that you do each step as a separate selective colour layer.
Tumblr media
make sense? let me know if you have any questions :)

—» Secondly, some things that Shuu’s done in canon DOES make me uncomfortable (and in some cases, legitimately triggered), so this blog will be canon-divergent.
—» Don’t follow this blog if you’re a minor.
—»I tag every possible trigger I can think of, just at the off-chance I can make someone uncomfortable. However, if I don’t tag something that triggers you, feel free to tell me and I’ll immediately change that. My tagging format is “#trigger /”
—»I’m happy to be followed by, follow, and rp with duplicates!
—»I’m mentally ill, neurodivergent and disabled. I can’t promise that I’ll always be in a good headspace for writing, I’ll always try to notify people if I’ll be offline due to complications.
—»There are some fandoms I am deeply uncomfortable with, and I will not follow/rp with you if you rp characters from them. These fandoms are: undertale, killing stalking, snk, bnha and hazbin hotel. I’ll add to this as if i am followed by any other fandoms that make me discomforted.
—» It's very unfortunate that I have to put this here, but for the sake of new followers, I need you to be aware that I am currently in the process of being stalked by seemingly multiple people. If you wish to follow me, you need to be prepared that you will receive asks or messages about me, and if this will make your mental state worse, I understand if you don't want to follow. I really do.
RULES.
—»This blog is private. If I do not follow you, I do not wish to rp. Don’t send me IC asks if you’re not a mutual.
—»Tag your alcohol mentions, drug mentions, age gap, incest, and abusive themes/references of any sort. Failure to tag on multiple occasions will get you unfollowed and possibly blocked. If you don’t know if something should be tagged, you are free to ask me or simply tag the post as “dev don’t look”.
—»If we follow each other, I’d like to interact! Mutuals that I don’t interact with at all will eventually be unfollowed, so if you want to interact with me, please don’t hesitate to do so.
—»Please do not follow me if you engage in minor/adult ships (including aged up minors). If you follow me and roleplay this, you will be blocked.
—»Don’t follow me if you rp smut/suggestive situations with minor characters. This includes when they’re aged up.
—»My interpretation of Shuu is genderqueer and questioning. Respect that.
—» I need to emphasize that I am not, nor will I ever be gentle towards those who I have discovered to be racist, transphobic, antisemitic, or anything of the like. If you have come here expecting me to be tolerant of people within the rp community who display these behaviours, you have come to the wrong blog.
CANON CHANGES.
—» Shuu has no interest in Hiyoko outside of wanting to use her for plot progression. His seemingly romantic interest in her in the first game is being entirely scrapped on this blog. I don't feel like I have to explain why it's bad.
—» I'm open to rping Shuu's partridge form upon request but this will be, by default, a human!au blog.

SIMS TAG
Ahhhh thanks for the tag @natolesims ^_^ I’ll tag @ashubii @mosneakers @payte and @ashubii
What’s your favourite sims death?
Hmmm, drowning is classic but I was so shocked when the meteorite killed my sims in ts2, so let’s go with that one.
Alpha CC or Maxis Match?
Gotta go with MM; I tried Alpha back in the day but it just looks off in my game.
Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?
Not usually. I did have a pear shaped sim back in gen 3 of the insectas I fixed, but most of my sims keep their weight.
Do you use move objects?
Always.
Favorite mod?
I like SoL, but I’m looking into the other game enhancing mods...
First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?
Sims 1: Vacation, Sims 2: University, Sims 4: Seasons
Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?
ALIVEEEE, like, “LETS DO IT LIVE”.
Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?
I don’t MAKE too many sims (I steal them all from the neighborhoods) but Ant was my favorite for a loooong time. Theo is my favorite currently :) They’re both entertaining to “play” the game with lmao
Have you made a simself?
Yeah but she’s been sitting for years in her sad house in Windenberg. I don’t play simself stuff, but sometimes I’ll dress her up for a simblr challenge.
What sim traits do you give yourself?
Cheerful, Geek, Goofball. I’m very basic.
Which is your favorite EA hair color?
I don’t really have one...uhhhh, black!
Favorite EA hair?
I always use the city living hairs. Love the one ponytail with the braid on the side. I also love the Island Living hairs.
Favorite life stage?
I like my moody teenagers the best. The phases can be irritating but entertaining if I integrate it into the story.
Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay?
Gameplay but I actually really like customizing lots. I’ll download a lot or redo an existing one.
Are you a CC creator?
Nah, I honestly don’t have time :(
Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad?
I have some pretty awesome mutuals. I’m too MIA to be a part of a squad. Work, relationships, and life get in the way of playing sims lol. I’ve tried to join a general discord but I’m awful at using it.
What’s your favorite game?
Currently, Disco Elysium. Usually, Stardew Valley/Harvest Moon or whatever the current Zelda game is. (Actually I’m playing Minish Cap rn!)
Do you have any sims merch?
No T_T I might have in the past. I REMEMBER DISTINCTLY that I had the Sims 1 ONLINE but my mom and I didn’t understand how to set it up so she gave it away.
Do you have a YouTube for sims?
No, that sounds terrifying. I barely post on tumblr LOL
How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing?
Hmmm good question. I think it’s less “basic NPC” (base game??) and a little leaning towards my own lil funky style. When I first replayed sims 4 again in 2020, I downloaded all the basic CC that was trendy (and kinda outdated). In 2022, I moved my save to a new PC and started over, so that helped.
What’s your Origin ID?
I do not know. I do not use Origin or any EA app for socializing/sharing
Who’s your favorite CC creator?
Looking at my CC folder: simandy, clumsyalien, sentate, nolansims, and deetron.
How long have you had a simblr?
2020 I believe. Maybe a bit earlier but I didn’t post anything
How do you edit your pictures?
I used to have photoshop T_T (RIP) and used PSD and actions and EVERYTHING LOOKED SO GOOD. I lost access and I can’t bring myself to pay monthly rn. I miss it though, I hate the way my screenshots look now.
What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?
I’d honestly like packs to be refreshed. I’m not one to ask for new stuff...I think there’s enough stuff. We need things to work properly LOL
What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far?
City Living has gotten the most focus from me. It’s SO much fun to go thrifting, go to festivals, and I love apartments. I’m sure I’ll love Island Living but I haven’t gottten to explore it yet.
