thinking about how I've seen OCD get talked about now, but haven't really seen many posts that actually explain what it is. And like, obviously people shouldn't get all their info about mental conditions from posts, but u can't deny that internet communities and stuff play a major role in people recognizing and putting names to their own experiences.

But like since the general public has like absolutely no idea of what OCD actually is (no thanks to popular media), and a lot of things I see talking about intrusive thoughts don't mention OCD (either bc they originated in OCD circles or bc intrusive thoughts aren't Exclusive to OCD or for some other reason), there should prob be more explanation put out on what OCD actually consists of.

Which is kinda hard in some ways, bc there are so many ways OCD can present in terms of what "themes" a person experiences, so someone talking about what their themes are might not ring a bell with someone who experiences different ones. But like, the core thing with OCD isn't the presence of certain themes, it's a specific pattern of spiraling thoughts and reactions.

Like. OCD is a mental condition/illness where people experience stressful, unwanted, repetitive thoughts. These are intrusive thoughts are what make up the "obsessions" part of the disorder. In response to these intrusive thoughts, a lot of people will perform certain actions or think certain things in an attempt to neutralize or disprove the threat they represent. These are the "compulsions" part of the condition.

For a more "traditional" example, someone experiencing intrusive thoughts that they might catch a communicable disease may obsessively wash their hands or google their symptoms to try to lessen the anxiety. While someone who is worried they might hurt someone (even though they very much do not want to hurt someone) may avoid being near sharp objects or may avoid the people they're afraid of hurting.

One of the issues with OCD is that performing the compulsions provides short term relief, but in the long term it only strengthens the stress caused by the intrusive thoughts, thus furthering the thought spiral and actively making it worse, to the point where, depending on your themes, you may be (almost) convinced that your intrusive thoughts represent the truth or the inevitable or something permanent.

Intrusive thought themes cam be literally anything, but some of the common ones are stuff like

Questioning your sexuality, gender, etc (what if I'm actually straight/gay/bi/trans/cis/etc?)

Being worried about losing control and hurting yourself or others physically, sexually, emotionally, basically any way (what if I want to kill someone? What if I'm a pedophile? What if I'm an abuser? What if I want to stab myself? Etc)

Fear of becoming or being sick

Worrying something bad will happen to you or people you care about

Worrying about your spiritual beliefs or lack thereof (what if I'm actually Christian? What if I'm actually atheist? What if i don't believe in the faith i ascribe to? Etc)

Worrying about relationship status (what if I don't actually love them? What if they're not "the one"? What if they're cheating? What if *I'm* cheating? Etc)

What if I'm a bad person?

Fear of losing things

Fear of things not feeling right (this is often be related to other themes via magical thinking. ex: if I don't have my things organized Just Right then something bad will happen)

Fear of unreality

Compulsions vary by theme a lot obviously, but some common ones include

Hand washing

Organizing things until they Feel Right

Checking and double checking and triple checking to make sure you did something correctly

Obsessively reviewing your memories to disprove a thoughtor make sure you don't believe something

Arguing against the thoughts in an attempt to disprove them

Testing your mental reactions to a thought or to certain kinds of content, to show yourself you don't actually believe or feel something

Obsessively googling symptoms, testimonies, things related to your thoughts

Obsessive prayer

Repeating phrases, mantras, affirmations, etc in an attempt to make thoughts go away

Avoiding things and situations that set off your intrusive thoughts

Repeatedly asking for reassurance from others ("I'm not being xyz, right?")

But yeah this obviously isn't exhaustive but, just, if this kind of thing sounds familiar, you should probably do some research on OCD, bc while intrusive thoughts can occur with other conditions, the intrusive thought-compulsion spiral is the core of OCD and isn't really a subaspect of depression/anxiety/ptsd/etc. and the treatment and management of OCD can look different from other stuff, so its a good thing to look into.

(Also it's important to keep in mind, esp if you're someone that doesn't have it, that someone's intrusive thoughts Are Not "secret desires" or "repressed urges" or anything the person even remotely wants to act on. Someone having harm-related intrusive thoughts is not at risk of actually acting on them, no matter how worried they are of doing so.)

(spoilers ahead) i wish my question were more positive, but mr gaiman, why did you choose to include wlw rep only to brutally kill almost every example of it?

just watched the first 5 eps of the sandman. i was loving it, until we met rachel and she died 15 minutes later. after johanna walked off into the rain i looked it up and found out she wasn't coming back. i was disappointed but kept watching. in episode 5, i was excited to meet bette and judy but as i slowly realised where the episode was leading i had to stop watching. i looked up spoilers again to confirm both characters died.

i felt sick to my stomach, and researched more to confirm that yes, there were no other wlw characters in the show. maybe i should keep watching, give the sandman the benefit of the doubt. but as a young queer woman desperate for positive representation, having 3 wlw character die brutally in the same episode they were introduced in, and the other written off...

i understand the show is intentionally dark, but considering i was drawn in by promises of positive queer rep, and knowing from my research that there are many mlm characters who don't die or get to live a long life, it feels your lesbian/bi female characters were given the short end of the stick.

at this point, i wish you hadn't included them at all, so i could be saved the trauma of becoming attached to characters i identify with, only to watch them all die in horrifying ways. this is a constant trend in media deep down, it reinforces the idea that queer women like me can never have a happy ending.

even if you don't have an answer, please acknowledge this ask in some way. thank you.

If there's a Season 2 you will see many of these characters again, because Death doesn't stop characters from being in Sandman. And if there's a Season 2 you'll meet several more important wlw characters who will survive much longer (and who may if we get the opportunity spin off into their own story, as happened in the comics).

Always remember though that Sandman is a show in which, given enough time or bad luck, people die. That isn't a judgement on anybody, as I hope episode 6 makes very clear. It's part of the human condition. It's also why people are complaining on Twitter that I've got it in for cis white males (many of whom die in season 1), and it's why you can get articles like the recent one in Gay Times applauding Sandman for its LGBTQA+ representation.

(Also a small footnote. Gay Times describes Zelda and Chantal as "twins". It's made clearer in the comic that nobody in the house actually knows their relationship. gentlebeard's ending is them deciding to give their relationship a go in a more relaxed and sedate environment than the high stress locale of a pirate ship. their friends ARE going to come see them again. just because they don't all live together in the same frat house i mean ship doesn't mean they're suddenly forever alone. also there is nothing comphet about shacking up with your gay lover in a soon to be literal loveshack.

but like you can't expect these folks to care about ed or stede or gentlebeard or anything that doesn't center their white man of choice. the only thing you can do is block because anyone still throwing a fit a week later is simply not worth it.

People who ship gay ships can and will be homophobic

And maybe this will be seen as a really weird take I don't mean in it in like "oh they have really bad takes about LGBTQA issues and don't understand that what they are doing is harmful" I mean it in "I think all queer people are going to hell and that homosexuality is a sin and that they are not allowed to marry or exist and should be killed but my two blorbos can make out and have gay sex because it's just a fantasy I will pray at the end of the night for forgiveness from God so it's ok uwu"

some do mental gymnastics to justify it

My rule of thumb most religious people will jump hoops to justify things that they like but aren't allowed in there religious and at the same time will shame other religious people for doing the same thing because the other sin is easier for them to avoid

Some Christians will eat selfish but will shame other Christians for wearing certin clothes

Some muslims will drink alchohol but will shame other Muslims for eating pork

sins I like and have a hard time avoiding = Well I'm human

How do I know that ? Well you see I unfortunately was homophobic I knew alot of homophobic people who shipped alot of queer ships some of them treat it like they have a porn addiction there are servers for *recovery* at least in my country's fandom

Hell me and my sister had to do mental gymnastics to justify to eachother why we shipped bakudeku and dazai and chuyya I still laugh to this day (it isn't funny giving the context that when we both discovered we ship gay ships me and my sister almost had a panic attacks thinking the other will snitch about the other and get beaten up for supporting homosexuality)

Thankfully me and my sister are better now and not homophobic anymore still have things to fix but we are doing better (fandom helped alot with that discovering that LGBTQA people are actually human who love their partners "I am sorry for the wording I really am" and not just pedophiles that are possessed by demons like we've always been told in the news and tv and every other form of media

I'm really bad at getting to the point but Anti policing certain things and calling people homophobic for doing things they don't like in fandom spaces is bad really bad an ally who ships a straight ship over a canonical gay ship are better than a homophobic person who ships the correct ships and uses the right labels and headcanons safe stuff and in real life won't hesitate to shoot a gay person

Some people (antis) need to understand that shipping isn't activism (do they think that all the people who wrote gay fanfiction in the old fandoms where actually you know ok with gay people? All of them ?) People can ship all the right stuff and be homophobic

Homophobia is hating gay people it isn't about what ship you like it isn't about what kind of media you consume and I'm tired of people pretending it is

And the thing is, I could see WWX's obliviousness being used effectively! LWJ is the one who invited him to Jinlintai for Jin Ling's ceremony, after all; from what I can tell, it's entirely reasonable for WWX in the novel to think LWJ lured him deliberately into the Qiongqi Pass ambush. WWX could've approached LWJ with a mixture of distrust and hostility on the grounds that LWJ tried to kill him in his past life (deceitfully via a gesture of friendship, no less!), and been utterly bewildered by LWJ's behavior towards him for that reason. His feelings for LWJ then change and grow because he's learning more about what the hell happened with the political plot.

Instead, we just get Wei Wuxian, The Jianghu's Most Tediously Oblivious Man, and his aloof love interest who exclusively shows affection while he is drunk or while WWX is incapacitated/unconscious/whatever and won't remember, and both of them replace Gay Chicken with communication.

I can see "WWX can read LWJ like a book" for the drama specifically. Wang Yibo does an excellent job of conveying interiority so something different is always going on underneath LWJ's stoic expressions. The "you must like Mianmian!" stuff in CQL always read to me as WWX teasing LWJ knowing full well there was no truth to it (though still not getting who LWJ did have a crush on). And since the two of them are good friends in that canon (with WWX's protestations that they are TOTALLY not friends, LWJ is so BORING!! coming off as tsundere behavior rather than his honest assessment of the situation), of course they'd understand each other!

BUT EVEN THEN. EVEN THEN! LXC can read him best. LXC can read him even when LWJ demonstrates his own tsundere behavior. LXC knows his didi better than anyone else and does everything he can for LWJ's happiness and safety, and in exchange he gets kicked to the curb at the lowest point in his life. Maybe the insistence that WWX is the only person who can understand him is so ppl don't have to think about that last part too much.

Don't go looking for episodes 1 and 2 review because there isn't one. I watched them but I'm late to the party. So, I'm starting here.

Yes, Yes, they are still problematic characters, fully aware but problematic characters are fun in fiction. Real life? No way. Who would be okay with any of the bl fictional characters? I mean really, Sean and Black have anger management problems. SCOY is about a stalker and stalky who fall in love. As much as I love Pai, in real life we'd beg Sky to call the cops. Let's not even talk about the Kinnporsche couples. Are we not allowed to live vicariously through art anymore?

Yai is being super cute. I'm liking it. I'm seeing a redemption arc here. Oh, look Mankorn being. Home dude is hooked. You like that old fashioned, shut up. Oh yeah, he's caught feelings. I can see them as being on opposite sides. PP either as an anti-hero, a villain, or just doing her own thing, while Ava is still a hero and is trying to either get her back on their side or detain her (or kill depending on how dark I make PP be). They've got this whole cat and mouse thing going that gets more sexually charged as the years go by and they mature. There's no exaggerated moaning or obvious innuendos or anything, but you can definitely feel how charged the atmosphere can become. Some bolder young heroes even ask Ava if the two had dated at one point.

The gay spideytiger:

The two are heroes, but A lets more of his animalistic characters show. Since guys are usually portrayed in media as more dominant and aggressive, A would be able to get away with slipping on some of the iron-clad control that Ava has on the amulet. I like the idea of him being like a cat, just bigger, and doing all of those scenting and making biscuits things that household cats do. Even if he didn't like Peter in the beginning, he unintentionally starts to and subconsciously thinks of the guy as his and makes to be near him, casually touching him – throwing an arm over his shoulder (I like the idea of A being as or even slightly taller), dragging his fingers over his body when A passes him, sitting near enough to touch, etc. Peter, of course, doesn't think too hard about it, shrugging it off as the guy being touch-affectionate, Danny's also the same so why not? Peter doesn't realise anything until years down the line when he wakes up with A in his bed again and thinks that maybe they're more than friends???

(In the living together stint in their teens, A gets to sleep in Peter's room and argues that the bed is big enough for both of them (it's not) and Peter can't really argue since whatever he says is ignored by A who just wraps himself around the brunette like an octopus and doesn't let go until the alarm rings. On the bright side, Peter's warm, but on the other A likes to bite his neck in his sleep.)

It would be interesting to read of how Ava would grow to have romantic feelings for Peter while taking consideration of fem!Peter’s actions.

Just dropping in to say that this week's episode was an absolute delight and it also made me think for the first time in years about another 2000s MLM soap couple who I was super not normal about as a teenager lol

John Paul Mcqueen and Craig Dean, from the British soap hollyoaks. A brief summary which may get the details wrong but probably not because this is imprinted on my brain: they were best friends in college, JP came out as gay and confessed he was in love with Craig, Craig initially denied he felt the same but got super jealous once JP got a boyfriend and they eventually started hooking up. Craig still denied being in any way queer, and was in a relationship with a woman who he got engaged to but continued to see JP. JP eventually had enough and at Craig's engagement party engineered a situation where his fiancée caught them together. After everything came out, they decided to make a proper go of it as a couple and decided to move away together (because Craig's fiancée and her family were rightfully fuming lol), but at the airport Craig still wouldn't hold JPs hand in public and JP realised he wasn't ready.

Like a year later JP was now engaged to another man (who was also a Catholic priest because soap) and then there was a whole shenanigans with JPs secret long lost brother who was a serial killer who: blew up a church with JPs whole family in it, murdered JPs priest fiancé, and kidnapped Craig's sister to the Scottish Highlands after killing her husband. Craig came back because of the whole brother-in-law death/sister kidnap incident, they reunited and decided to give it another go and the final shot of them was them holding hands on a train. (Until JP came back without Craig in like 2015 but we don't talk about that)

The whole thing was ridiculous and honestly they were poorly written characters and pretty terrible representation, but I sobbed during their last scene and still remember them so fondly now. I was growing up in a small English town in the 2000s and had only just really learnt that queer people were a thing, still years off realising that I was also queer. But I remember watching the episode where they first kissed with my older sister and being instantly entranced with their story, to the point where from that day on I watched hollyoaks religiously despite previously complaining any time my sister had it on haha. It was a long journey to me realising I was queer but I would honestly put this as one of the first steps. Representation in soaps was so important in the 2000s and they were really the only mainstream media at the time where we saw that representation. Although I'm glad we've progressed in terms of queer stories in media, I will always look back so so fondly on mcdean and other queer soap relationships for what they meant to me at the time

I (V) love this so much! Like I said on the episode, researching this made me remember how formative Bianca/Maggie were for me on the American ABC soap "All My Children" in 2003, too. I don't think soaps ever necessarily set out to be, like, affirming and formative in their queer representation (or any other representation) but man, in the 2000s, when it was hard to find anything else, it felt like so much.

In this latest edition of "Obvious Things In Detroit: Become Human That I'm 1000% Sure David Cage Didn't Intentionally Put In But Would Absolutely Take Credit For":

Hey, you know how one half of the game is just a copy-pasted upgrade to the buddy-cop story from David Cage's other game 'Heavy Rain', meaning that Connor would've been working with the cops in his story no matter what 'cause Cage just really likes that plotline and cop stories in general?

And you know how Connor is, himself, not actually a cop, but a corporate assassin sent to hunt deviants and kill them, all the way up to when the deviants start to organize, at which point he switches to hunting them down for clues (murder being downgraded to just a fun by-product) until he can find the Deviant Leader and take out the deviant problem at its source?

And you know how hilariously and accidentally insightful it is that Connor - an assassin - blends in with the cops as his media-friendly cover story by:

perfectly delivering on their in-game interrogation methods (which we see Hank try out first and then Gavin offer casual suggestions for, and later see Connor some props from Hank if we score a confession by using 'proper policework' and not 'that fancy shmancy android stuff')

getting the occasional praise from the game's moral compass (a cop) for being "a good guy with a gun" by having Connor openly kill deviants in a 'good' way (i.e. Hank saying Connor saved lives when Connor uses all his precision-android-aim to shoot that camera operator android to death in Stratford Tower instead of just disabling it, despite those same cops tut-tutting at Markus for killing the other human in the tower because 'only an android could make that shot')

emphasizing real-world police brutality and overmiltarization by having Connor's next iteration (the RK-900) literally sold to the military as a faster, more durable, and more kitted out version of himself rather than a change in any tactics or approach?

And you know how I'm saying that that was accidental because David Cage has a consistent pattern of "Military are the next step up from the detective/ federal agent" in all three of his games, so the 'RK-900 being military' point would've also happened either way to show David Cage's intended point of ':( look they replaced machine!connor with a better version of himself, what a thankless reward, you definitely picked the evil path, corporations are bad', so we shouldn't be giving Cage any credit for unintentionally highlighting the real-world overmiltarization of police forces?

And you know how Connor can't make it to the end of the game without killing at least one android, or else he gets recalled by the Big Mean Soulless Corporation for not being a good enough police officer uwu?

Author commentary: In some circles this event was not Well Received. If you have a gay in your media you probably shouldn't be killing off your gay because that's a thing that has happened a lot historically in media. So when gay people see a gay in media they go, oh look, she's gay like me oh whoops she's fucking dead already, never mind, that's kind of a bummer. Is Kanaya even gay, though? Look, I think we talked about this already, so let's not bother with whatever that conversation was again and just say she is. Anyway the point is, people being upset about this for that specific reason seemed fair. HOWEVER, I knew it wasn't going to stick because I had the gay vampire plan in my back pocket, but I couldn't just come out and say that until it happened. So it resulted in me having to eat a huge plate of shit for several weeks while people thought this is what happened. I guess that's one of the many perils of serialized media. The little moments get magnified and people draw a lot of premature conclusions and it all gets a little stupid. Which is not to say there didn't end up being plenty of material I submitted that people were disgusted by for legitimate reasons. I'm just saying here that if readers want to regard me as a shithead for certain things, my bare minimum desire is at least for those things not to be predicated on bad takes.

here's a quick rundown on astarion: gay vampire spawn (not a vampire. like a demo version vampire. a "lesser" one but don't let him hear that) who has been kept for 200 years by his master as a slave. guy (who was an actual vampire) carved him up, tortured him and forced him to lure victims into his manor. astarion has been abused in so many ways i'd hit some sort of character limit if i listed half of them. he was only allowed to feet on rats and small vermin in the sewers. poor little meow meow astarion is now free due to [game story] reasons and seeks power and revenge -- he's an edgy fuck with a lot of swag and no moral compass. bro is a menace and loves causing problems on purpose. [slight spoiler] he will literally try to suck some of your blood like a day or two after you meet him and unless you succeed a skill check he'll just keep doing it until you die. if you resurrect yourself afterwards he'll go like "ooooh ooopsie sowwy! i wouldn't kill you if i knew you'll be back teehee can we forget about this? ;) <3 don't fucking kill me". he's such a good fucking whumpee you don't even know. it's insane. i don't want to ramble but he's almost everything i've ever wanted from a character like this in a large scale rpg. [slightly bigger spoiler] despite being the go-to "fuckable" character who everyone finds hot as hell (both in-universe and online) he's HORRIBLY traumatized by his sexual experiences from when he used to be a slave and when you romance him a good portion of his storyline revolves around trying to make him realize that he's more than just a slab of very attractive meat. he hides his feelings behind a facade of "evil tumblr sexyman-esque" mannierisms and getting to finally peel it back and see him for the poor wet cat that he is is so fucking satisfying. [an even bigger spoiler] i loved watching him cry when he finally gets to confront his former master. pristine content. there's so much more to his character (and this game in general) but if you ever need to justify spending full price on a new videogame release, there's nothing better than bg3. if i could choose one game to beam directly into the brain of each whumpblr user, it'd be this one.

Johnny Storm can be your poor little meow meow for so many reasons:

He's treated like the baby of the family because he was 16 when they got their powers (even though realistically he should be in his 30s by now).

This is actually to the point that when Reed, Sue, and Ben think their powers may be killing them, they keep it from Johnny and only tell him in the same situation as the kids. (They even sit him down with the kids for this conversation.)

He initially wanted to keep a secret identity in his hometown (so people thought the Johnny Storm of Glenville and the Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four were two different people), but everyone knew anyway.

This also makes Johnny's later characterization of seeing himself as nothing more than the Human Torch and nothing without the Fantastic Four even sadder.

Johnny does initially have some mild angst about being the baby and wanting to fall in love and grow up, but nothing too outside of comic book norms, until John Byrne shoehorned him into a relationship (and later marriage) with Ben's ex-girlfriend Alicia, except we then find out that it wasn't Alicia at all, but a Skrull who took Alicia's place before Johnny ever started dating her, so Johnny was raped. And then this Skrull continually stalks, lies, and gaslights Johnny in multiple ways, which seems to prey on certain fears of his (like losing control of his powers in a public place).

So then Johnny ends up in a public divorce, but the F4 doesn't tell everyone that Johnny and Alicia weren't really married, so Johnny's reputation is sullied in the public eye. And he becomes a playboy, a womanizer. Metatextually, the writers don't acknowledge how they're dealing with Johnny's sexual abuse, but in canon, Johnny has literally no one on his side. So. Kind of a horrifying era.

Years after this, one little detail in Secret Invasion is that Johnny may have tests for people he loves to make sure they're who they say they are. 🙂 Can you say ✨trust issues✨?

Johnny also plays up the playboy thing in the years after his "divorce" (specifically, after Heroes Reborn), along with a general "Oh, I'm just an irresponsible, carefree person!" vibe, which his sister Sue notes is definitely a front in many ways, as Johnny has to do a lot of work to stay in control of his powers so he doesn't hurt people, and Johnny has nightmares about hurting the people he loves.

Johnny loves his family sooooo much, and he dies to save them. His death and the plots stemming from that are so fun. Sue goes nuts (as she should). Reed tries so hard to get his body back. Val goes for revenge. And Ben and Franklin's guilt over not being able to save him? Ben, who Johnny tricked into being thrown out of the way? Franklin, who is supposed to have such great powers but couldn't save his uncle?

While Johnny hasn't been confirmed as gay, Bobby was initially conceived as a knockoff Johnny, so I think we can acknowledge that there should be some backwards implications here. So just taking all of this into account, a gay man whose been in the public eye since he was 16, who had a very public failed marriage, which is likely treated as his fault due to his womanizing and playboy image when in actuality he was the victim of multiple kinds of abuse, and who struggles deeply with coming to terms with his own identity outside of his family and the role he's been told to play by the media? I adore him. I want to study him under a microscope
