wwi - wwii era postcards collected in germany [details below]
these recently came into my possession after my dad’s coworker found out my mom and i are native german speakers (now americans).
i’m currently transcribing, scanning, and researching these, hoping i’ll be able to return them to the families they belong to (since they were discovered in the rubble or looted from houses/post offices while the coworker’s dad was stationed in germany during wwii :|). feel like a historical detective rn, tho ^^
some interesting things i’ve noted:
abt half of the cards are from/to this pretty successful opera singer, amalie marianne merz-tunner (we have some cards from austria and italy too bc of her tours!)
got some feldpost (military mail) from some nazis in the third ss panzergrenadier :[] ("division totenkopf"... extra yikes)
the oldest card i've come across so far is from 1919, and the newest is from 1945
i’ve identified at least three diff types of cursive over the decades: kurrentschrift, sütterlinschrift, deutsche normalschrift, and some hybrids
most of these were in german abt weather, vacation, or christmas greetings, but we did have two from an american soldier in english!
there was a girl/woman who went on vacation to "kempten" and sent a card back to her hometown of "kempen" sort of as a joke lol
