rant time!
kpop reaction content isn't exactly new (at least as far as I know) but it does seem to have kind of boomed in the last... two-three years I think. I remember there being only a handful of relevant kpop reaction content creators on youtube, some more popular that the others, but still there weren't a ton of them around. and I guess it makes sense because kpop itself has gotten much more popular and widely known outside of just [REDACTED] and among a wider age range I'd say.
but nowadays if you look up “X group - Y title track reaction” you will find tens, if not hundreds of reaction videos (especially if its a well known group) ranging from channels with hundreds of thousand subs to small account with a couple of hundred views on their reaction videos. and I just find that so weird.
like... especially for channels that do reactions as their main (and only) content, I find it extremely difficult to believe that after a certain point there is any authenticity behind these reactions. these big reaction channels are out there reacting to damn near every relevant kpop group's comebacks (and there are a LOT of them) and every single reaction is generally positive and often very enthusiastic.
aside from the fact that logically and statistically it's impossible for someone to like every title track being released, even if they're all objectively good (which they're not), because no one likes every genre and every style of music, there is basically no creativity involved in creating this type of content which makes it very dull both for the creator and the consumer after a while.
on top of that, this type of content has created a really toxic environment around expressing opinions and criticism toward kpop groups and kpop music. I just came across a video from one of these bigger (while also being newer) creators talking about how she's not happy with the content she's been making for the past year. she said that it's extremely overwhelming trying to keep up with every comeback when everyone expects you to react to their fave's CB and after a while sitting and reacting to music videos becomes repetitive especially when you're not even allowed to truly be yourself and express your opinions. she said she can't even talk about having a bias in a group because she would get tons of hate comments and dms about ppl bashing her for not having a different bias. I can't imagine how people would react to a reaction video creator saying she doesn't like a comeback or even a certain element in the song/mv.
I used to love kpop reaction videos back when I had just discovered them and they were not as big. like I genuinely get the appeal. seeing someone who's not a teenage girl (which is what stereotypically the general public thinks kpop stans are) is pretty validating. and back then there were like 'vocal coach reacts' or 'producer reacts' etc. seeing the reaction of "experts" analyzing different parts of a song/mv was really interesting for someone like me with zero knowledge of any of the technical stuff. and I also understand that they do contribute to promoting groups and comebacks to a certain degree. but it has just gone too far, in my opinion.
idk maybe I’ve just gotten old and lost the will to enjoy the small things that used to bring me joy but I genuinely don't enjoy reaction videos anymore. most of those older 'exerpts' (except for two I think) aren't active anymore (I'm guessing at least to some degree bc stans didn't want to hear that their fave was not that legendary of a vocalist or their fave song wasn't as layered and complex as they thought it was) and instead there are just random people reacting to kpop and some of them you can just tell that all their reactions are completely faked out. Youtubers are jumping on this trend bc it’s easy (in terms of not having any kind of real substance) and gets u good views if you’re a little charming and funny.
TL;DR : everything is fake and authenticity is dead. kdjfdjf I'm mostly joking but in the end, as per usual with my rants of this kind, I don't have a specific point or a solution. I'm just starting a conversation. so if any of you have something to add or just want to chat about this send me an ask!! (plz don't reply in the comments because I want this to be on my dash so everyone else can read too.)
#I believe the only technical reactors that arent new are PD and reacttorhek#iirc Dre used to be the biggest reacting channel but idk if hes not active anymore or just not relevant#there are a few ‘dancer reacts’ that are new and i didnt find any of their reactions that fun to watch. they didnt anything to the convo.#idk how new ben (birb) is but i used to like his reactions back when he would pause a lot and make longer comments. new hes making very-#short reactions and barely rewinds/pauses for comments.#i dont watch reacttorhek anymore at first bc they werent doing reactions to my faves anymore so there wasn’t anything for me to watch#but then I discovered that they have a doc where they’ve made a list of groups/songs they wouldn’t be reacting to#i think the explanation was that the producer has to choose songs that are complex enough and are worth their artists reacting to#which made sense but seeing the songs/groups they are reacting to (granted i dont stan any of them) it seems like they’re actually mostly-#-reacting to the most popular groups and not necessarily the groups/cbs that deserves the attention#like it makes sense for them to be picky bc they’re a huge team and cant be mass producing tons of videos like some of these solo reactors#but it seems like instead of picking actually musically complex and interesting songs from lesser known/underrated groups theyre just-#-picking groups that will bring the most views.#i just scrolled thru their channel and nearly all the videos were reactions of popular 4th gen gps#essentially the only reactor i still enjoy watching to some degree is PD#But i still cant get over the fact that none of these reactors ever have anything other than praise to say abt evey song they react to#even I dont like EVERY song my bias group releases#so even when i watch a reaction of a song/mv i DO LIKE i dont know if the person is being genuine abt liking it#okay i think I’m done 🤔#niki screaming into the void#long post

Hey, I would like some advice if you can. I steer away from most drama related to fandom wars and such. I'm pretty good at curating my space, and I'm only on Twitter for BTS translation/news accounts. I'm here for a good time not to fight ppl over something I love. However, the negativity has been bleeding through recently. BTS was my introduction to kpop, and I'm discovering new groups to listen to, but everywhere I look, I find ppl bashing the boys. For no reason. Like seriously, I find ppl talking about BTS in other fandom spaces sm. Whether it's just hate, ppl trying to discredit the boys, blaming them for interviewers bringing them up to other groups (and not the interviewers?? Or the companies who allow this question to be asked??), praising other groups for doing something and turning around to bash BTS for doing the exact same thing. You know, the usual shit we get.
I want to be in other fandom spaces but it's honestly getting frustrating being there. What should I do in this case?
hey! well tbh i have been going through the same thing ever since i got into kpop in general, and the bts hate only grew in the last 3 years as they achieved more fame. personally speaking, just like u, i have also been repelled from so many interactive spaces of other kpop fandoms bc there's so much shade-throwing at bts for no reason that i have resorted to not following any multi kpop blogs except the network blogs of different kpop groups (so that i don't see any personal rant on my dash) and i would suggest u do the same: only follow multi fans who like (or just respect) bts too or network blogs who only reblog fandom content and provide information. u already stated that u have curated ur space well, and i know u wanna make friends in other fandoms too so i'm sorry u are seeing so much negativity about bts in other kpop fandoms :( also if it means anything, i can be ur multi kpop friend if u want haha ♡

k-pop is so very interesting even from a business point of view. there’s no messing about the companies have the reigns over the idols but the idols sign contracts without thinking. I will never get the fuss over an idol? I don’t really care to care about them specifically k-pop as a whole is not music its business. fans need to understand that contracts aren’t permanent even if idol groups didn’t last long, which the majority don’t these days
fans need to understand that they can’t and don’t have possession over their idols no matter who they like or love, no matter if they are sasaeng or not this righteous behavior and claiming of biases is the reason why fans don’t have much interest in their own life, they’d rather pour it into someone from another country in a way it’s oh so interesting because why are the idols surprised? why are fans bothered about stalking? when something like stalking it is bound to happen, come on. but I was watching the stray kids interview with the Australian network out of pure curiosity, the problem is the way “their dreams” have been marketed as is why they have a lack of privacy
they act like they didn’t have a clue what they were actually signing up for, it’s not a regular 9 to 5 job with night shifts, I don’t really get the pity party they kind of throw in interviews where they say things like oh it’s so hard and tiring to be an idol or the tours are exhausting and taxing or I only got paid this much I had to live with others in a low rented apartment but again did they expect luxury straight away?
no at the beginning especially if they are foreign of course its gonna seem wrong and even toxic or unhealthy working environment it’s business
is they think they can get by with doing just one or two dance routine sand call it a night? no cause there’s so much more than just dance. if young ppl are so easily swayed by this dream then they really need to think about it because it’s not realistic, nothing about doing what any celebrity does is ever going to be realistic and I think it’s one of the things where ppl go oooh I wanna be like that dancing away on stage and doing tours
it's not just about dance, it’s naturally going to be such a hard working environment where the companies are gonna expect more from the frisbees and if they don’t put 100% in well, they’re gonna take years before they debut. they don’t just go yep that guy can earn more than others and get treated differently or better
the idols are just pawns for the companies but obsession for the fans, contracts are gonna end if and when they break them, so i don’t get why idols or fans got so worked up over hyuna and whoever it was when rules are rules if they don’t stick by them then adios
at the start it would be like any other part time job, bc they going expecting to go straight to the top so they can get well paid enough but get away with doing whatever they like or not be treated so harshly well, then its going to be the opposite approach bc it doesn’t just gravitate to them they might generate some hype but there’s too ,any it’s overbearing and you have to really be so,etching other than another hype train if they want to really go to the top, bts mint be the top but they certainly aren’t all they cracked up to be because they wanted to go for this kind of dream now i feel like they could care less hence awful music that hasnt been up to their usual standard
if they’ve got to give so much to the fans be it online or otherwise the fans are naturally going to be obsessed they’re naturally going to stalk because the idols are part of the problem. they encourage streaming, voting, bullying others for just sharing opinion online, it’s stupid. I feel like the way idols encourage backlash by engaging in it shows to me they don’t really know how to deal with it again, what do idols expect? when this is what they sign up for. the purpose of idol is so the fans feel like they have connection to them in some form of way as twisted as it is, so no one should be shocked that when an idol does something out of the normal behaviour or acts up on social media, then later comes back grovelling and being all self pity just so fans feel bad
it seems that the idols and fans are somewhat alike because the fans easily bash both the idols and others for speaking against the idol if they don’t agree with what is being said or done, but then when it comes to the idol suddenly it’s the other way around and the idol speaks up or tries to be the mediator in the very drama they created and evoked
this is what happens in 2020, kpop might be all about mental health and being respectful of one another but they sure as hell don’t act on it when it really comes down to the things they do and say that could easily be avoided, the idols seem to quickly respond to shit but then get surprised when they get told off? I mean what do you expect? sunshine and rainbows 24/7? I don’t think so the k-pop idols r the reason sasaeng behavior exists, the company can do as much as they like to try and protect but it’s always going to be there because this whole idol fan dynamic where the fans feel they should have every bit of their idol in their life as much as possible
it’s exactly like me going to my workplace and expecting to get more pay when what I receive at the moment is minimum wage, they don’t shoot to the top, it’s naturally going to be a tiring exhausting environment to be in the public eye, u don’t have to be in it to know that either but this is what they chose for themselves so they can’t expect anything more they can’t have raged on social media whining about fans who follow them around cause again it’s in the contracts that they signed for or did they forget about it? it seems to me idols would rather blame someone or something else for making the choices that they did than to face the music or deal with the public
no one really could see the racism coming from when bts went to the west? do u all really think that western artists actually adore them or it’s because their another hype train to hop in the bandwagon… they mention bts, get articles written, draws in fan's attention equals to that artist trending using bts or any other group
the thing is it seems that idols don’t know how much they encourage fan behavior be it good or bad, they are the influence over the influenced. they are the driving force for whatever is said and done about them or to them just cause they’re in the system means nothing can go unscathed, the company watches them so if when they decide to do something that could potentially damage the reputation of course the company is going act on it potentially by removing said member from the group but again kpop is business
its not about the fans when it comes to money or reputation it’s about whether the idol is suited enough to be considered part of the group, whether they did anything wrong doesn’t matter, the companies will handle it how they think is best for both the company and group, the fans can be whiny about it but rules are put in place not to be broken
the other thing is that fans act like they don’t cause any problems either, they never apologise to kaachi for bullying those girls, whom i felt sorry for, when it comes to their precious idols they demand apologies for them whether it’s from company, or some random article writer, radio person, whatever. the double standards both from the fans and idols are the reason why it’s never peaceful or easy going for anyone in the kpop business
plus it strikes me that for whatever reason the idols that get up to stuff they really should know better about or speak just a little too much about unimportant matters or get shocked and react badly to what’s being said about them when it’s their actions and their choices lead them to be heavily watched so it’s just as much their responsibility as it is the fans, sasaengs whatever whoever, because they’re in the public eye, of course, they’re not gonna get privacy, of course, stalking is gonna occur, and of course there is going to be a backlash and they act like they don’t have a clue about how much of what they do really has the opposite effect and that is why it is the way it is

Unpopular Kpop opinions
This was a script for a video that i was lazy to make so i thought of posting it here :
Excuse any video terms or references
Hey there it's your boiiii, never have I expected to remember this channel existed but oh well. Hope yall are doing great I guess. Well considering the fact that I am an atttention seeker and for some reason this trend didn't due yet… Y'all we are doing an unpopular K-pop oppinion video “cue the confetti” no confetti for me ? Okay I guess
Anyway warning, disclaimer, disclosure whatever u want to call it I guess … technically I shouldn't do this cuz u have prob watched 1 or 2 unpopular K-pop opinion vid but oh well ; Anyway Ill do it anyways ; I'm not trying to offend anyone, if you are offended I appologize before even starting and if u have a different opinion that's okay share in the comment section. Okay yall ?? Let's start them
Considering the fact that RV is my ult group I should start with them cuz I have opinions
1. Sassy me should've been the title track for their November comeback. I have prob listened to Sassy me a million time more than RBB cuz issa bop and low-key sounds like it wouldve been an amazing title track. That chorus tho whew.. but oh well stream RBB
2. RV needs more rap lines similar to ICC and red flavor but on a velvet concept that would be liiiit and Russian Roulette is their best song… fight me
Enough of red velvet now
3. I miss bts's old style.
I know I knoe they matured they couldn't comeback to being students in love.  But honestly I really really enjoy their “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” era
I can listen to Young Forever (the repackaged ver.) on repeat all day, it is by far their best album and I love it
4. Mamamoo are queens of concepts. Thats all I can say . No explanation needed. Stream GOGOBEBE
5. Fanwars are dumb ; ouf I have to include this one but srsly. Fighting a fandom and bashing an artist doesn't make your fav better you are just showing to the world how toxic K-pop fandoms can be.. not only are u attacking ppl and offending them but also destroying K-pop image in general. If a non Kpop  artist saw how toxic y'all are, their will be no collabs with your fav. Think twice before fighting a fandom and bashing a group for literally no reasons. And that is the reason I quit Twitter haha
6. Tempo is better than love shot and Call me baby is still their best song.. again “it's my opinion”
7. Asking for a girl crush concept for twice is like asking for a pizza with brokoli. Wait is there a pizza with brokoli ? Wait there is !! Is it good ? I need to try it
Forget that, I can't think of twice in a girl crush concept at all and I think they are better off with what they are doing now. I'm excited for their April comback
8. Also BTS paved the way. I don't get why you guys are even arguing. Sure other K-pop acts tried opening the doors to the west, like PSY, SNSD, wonder girls and others oh yeah Sunmi is the one starting this debate just because she said it was BTS not her former group but you are bashing her like. Sorry but this doesn't make sense to me at all
9. Whistle is BP best song to date. Rap/visual/vocals and instruments are on point. But underrated
10. Mamamoo's fandom is the friendlier. What did u expect from a group always having fun and being them selves?
11. There is nothing as the worst / best Kpop entertainment company. Each one has it's strong suits and weak point. They all focus on the business side so I don't know why you guys are comparing
If a company is strong on something it is weak on something else.
That's all for today. If someone commented to make a part 2 I would absolutely do it haha agn attention seeker
Jokes aside if u have different opinion, the comment is welcoming you and let's all have a pieceful mature convo in there. Piece
Ma'am im hungry

here's how i actually feel. while i know that kpop has industry that contains toxic traits and bad stuffs going on here, we can't just stop them cuz there are some idols who want to pursue their dreams and become a singer, so they have to work hard and put efforts into their career. i don't understand why people acting like "kpop has evil industry and we need to save performers". it's blatant xenophobia and ignorance. they also didn't even know that
cont. [there are real producers in the music studio putting efforts into making and composing music and translations exist. like, i'm tired of some people bashing kpop for no reason. kpop is created for korean people as well as for asian representation since BTS have made their own way to America and have won numerous awards overseas. this website is toxic for me and i hate to see some ppl who straight up bash korean music for no reasons.]
Well, my take is generally that the changes will have to be because Korean people want them and petition for them and we can support them but we aren’t Korean. How pissed off would Americans be if people in France or Japan or wherever else where trying to get us to change things in our country, any thing, without our say so? And that’s part of the problem of the criticisms too, they just...? don’t even consider that there are Korean fans/citizens who want these changes too. Most of the time they don’t even mention them. It’s like they think Korean people aren’t aware of how the industry works or are brainwashed and totally okay with it. And kpop is really only one type of music. Korea has plenty of other types of music too, like any other place and not all of them are produced the way pop is. There’s an underground rap scene, independent artists, rock bands, etc.
And also, yes. They don’t take into account that many of the performers, treated well or not, want this. They aren’t putting in the effort and pushing themselves too far because they’d rather be doing something else. I’m not saying that the abuse is okay because people want to sing but shutting down the industry or saying it should be boycotted is a slap in the face to the very people we should supposedly protect. They want to perform! They wouldn’t have gotten so far if they hadn’t. It’s their passion. Their driving force in life. And as anyone who has had a passion or “calling” will know...it’s something you keep jumping back into like a rabid dog. Because you want it so bad it hurts. Taking away their audience wouldn’t really help change anything. Their label would just drop them or “put them in the basement” because they weren’t earning their keep and everything would continue to move on as it has. And also because I’m in international fan. They would just shift their focus to promote more heavily somewhere else if they lost the American (or any other place) market for a particular group. Which is another thing that people don’t consider. They’d just drop promotions for the international market or for certain places if there isn’t money there--they wouldn’t think it’s something to fix the industry for they’d go “oh, so [x group] isn’t very well received or making sales in [y place]...I guess we’ll not bother promoting there or visiting for fansigns or concerts and we’ll focus on promoting in [z place]/domestically”.
Also, as I’ve mentioned, this conversation has never in my experience been brought up because of genuine concern but just as an excuse to shit on fans or “make them shut up about it”. It also assumes that fans don’t care at all. We do. We often talk about it. I just can’t help but hear echoes of “the anime/manga industry doesn’t treat it’s workers right and is full of pedos and gross people why do you like it that must mean you’re a gross pedo apologizer too” whenever people bring it up or try to get you into shutting up about a song you liked.
A lot of people also just straight up use the “industry is bad” argument to say really racist/xenophobic fuckin things because they don’t like the fact someone (an American in my case) would listen to foreign music, foreign music that’s Asian no less. I’ve had some things said to me that...if it was said about anything else would earn someone a “call out” post but is almost considered part of the territory in this case and I’m sure a lot of international fans can relate to this.
My take is basically that I’m going to follow Korean fans’ lead, since they have the most say in it. I’ll back them up if it’s possible. But I don’t think it’s the place for an American (or any other “outsider”) to say they need to follow outside rules (really that’s how they’d see it, it’s how we would see it if it was done to us). That’d just build resentment, I think. And honestly? The industry would just ignore us and stop promoting or paying attention to these areas. The only place they really can’t ignore is their home country. I don’t think people realize they’ll just put the groups/artists that aren’t making much profit “in the basement” or drop them altogether and promote in areas that have higher sales and engagement. They’d just cut the cord so to speak. So nothing would be gained.
