Luca Guadagnino’s critically reviled, yet ultimately transcendent, tale of first love, Call Me By Your Name – features Timothée Chalamet as a young man living in 1980s Italy, who falls in love with his father’s research assistant, Armie Hammer – blossomed in theaters on January 19, 2018.

He was waiting for me to say something. He was staring at me. This, I think, is the first time I dared myself to stare back at him. Usually, I'd cast a glance and then look away---look away because I didn't want to swim in the lovely, clear pool of his eyes unless I'd been invited to---and I never waited long enough to know whether I was even wanted there; look away because I didn't want to give anything away; look away because I couldn't acknowledge how much he mattered. Look away because that steely gaze of his always reminded me of how tall he stood and how far below him I ranked. Now, in the silence of the moment, I stared back, not to defy him, or to show I wasn't shy any longer, but to surrender, to tell him this is who I am, this is who you are, this is what I want, there is nothing but truth between us now, and where there's truth there are no barriers, no shifty glances, and if nothing comes of this, let it never be said that either of us was unaware of what might happen. I hadn't a hope left. And maybe I stared back because there wasn't a thing to lose now. I stared back with the all-knowing, I-dare-you-to-kiss-me gaze of someone who both challenges and flees with one and the same gesture.
Elio, Call me by your name (Andre Aciman)

Time makes us sentimental. Perharps, in the end, it is because of time that we suffer.

But Oliver told me something I will never forget: that on the sixteenth of November each year—my birthday—though married and the father of two sons, he would take time out to remember the Poseidonian in himself and to consider what life would have been had we stayed together. “I feared I was starting to forget your face, your voice, your smell, even,” he said.
Over the years he had found his own ritual spot not far from his office, overlooking a lake where he would take a few moments on that day to think of our unlived life, his with mine. The vigil, as my father would have called it, never lasted long enough and it disrupted nothing. But recently, he went on, and perhaps because he was elsewhere that year, it came to him that the situation was entirely reversed, that he was a Poseidonian on all but one day a year and that the lure of bygone days had never left him, that he had forgotten nothing and didn’t want to forget, and that even if he couldn’t write or call to see whether I too had forgotten nothing, still, he knew that though neither of us sought out the other it was only because we had never really parted and that, regardless of where we were, who we were with, and whatever stood in our way, all he needed when the time was right was simply to come and find me.
“And you did.”
“And I did,” he said.

Tired, tired with nothing, tired with everything, tired with the world’s weight he had never chosen to bear.

I am tired of myself tonight. I should like to be somebody else.
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
Is it that you don’t like people, or that you just grow tired of them and can’t for the life of you remember why you ever found them interesting?
André Aciman, Find Me (Call Me By Your Name)
I want to care, but I don’t.
I look at you and all I feel is tired.
