No but you don’t understand. In years to come, one day Neil and Andrew will finally hit a point of complete trust, where both of them are still a bit cracked and shattered, still riddled with stone walls and iron gates to guard themselves- but with eachother, those walls are down.
Neil will still have nightmares, because those don’t ever fully go away. He’ll wake up screaming or nauseous, but the thing is- he won’t feel the need to hide it. He’ll instinctually turn to Andrew for comfort, instinctively letting him in, letting him see the twisted damaged version of himself that lies under his surface.
And Andrew? Andrew will open his arms for him without a second of hesitation. He’ll let Neil fall into his embrace, therefore allowing touch that isn’t fully spelled out or perfectly permissioned. He’ll let Neil cling to him as he chokes on his own breath, he’ll sooth him with careful touches and nonsense words.
And in that moment of brokenness- both of them will realize that they’re one step closer to whole.

personally i think Andrew gets jealous soooo easily. like he literally warned Nicky off from Neil with a knife and was so afraid his brother would ditch him for a girl that he made him swear to a "bros before hoes" pact. he has so many possessive tendencies, that man is JEALOUS.
a key part of his character is that he is convinced nobody would want to be around him without something in return. he literally makes deals because he doesn't trust people to stay with him. that man doesn't know the meaning of secure attachment! he's never even seen it before!
even if Andrew logically knows Neil is demi and doesn't feel attraction towards anyone else, that's not gonna snuff out his bone deep belief that he is disposable. he's gonna feel jealous and possessive and even insecure at times, even if he won't outwardly show it.
this isn't to say he doesn't learn how to have a secure attachment style with Neil or that their relationship is unhealthy. it just wouldn't be unusual for Andrew to experience extremely jealous feelings, feelings that he'll have to work through with Neil and also with Bee

Do you think that Neil ever gets worried that Andrew will actually get bored of him eventually?
Like maybe after practice one day he'll be rambling to Andrew about exy plays and how the practice could've gone better. He stops mid sentence as he realizes he has been talking about the same thing for five days now. He goes quiet as he searches his brain for a new thing to ramble about to keep Andrew interested. To keep himself interesting.
But then Andrew says, "keep going, I'm listening" and Neil's face lights up as he continues his rant.
Andrew doesn't really listen to the words Neil is saying, he just listens to Neil's voice because the sound of it is comforting and grounding. Andrew will never get bored of Neil or Neil's rants because he could never get bored his voice.

Andrew: Neil, sit down.
Neil: Don’t tell me what to do.

andrew: no one is allowed to touch a hair on kevin’s head. he cannot be damaged.
*neil in the background climbing kevin like a tree clawing his eyes out trying to get the remote because kevin keeps turning the volume up all the way on the tv whenever neil tells him that he and andrew are about to take a nap and dear god neil just wants to sleep*

I think over Neil’s sophomore year at PSU he slowly starts to reveal his real, unfiltered personality, and each of the Foxes have their own realization of why him and Andrew are actually perfect for each other.
If they thought Andrew was crazy, just fucking wait until they see Neil truly angry, until they hear about some of the things he’s had to do, about his own twisted morals, until he stops faking emotions to fit in and instead allowing himself to remain blunt and seemingly emotionless half the time. He’s not at all the boy they thought he was, but they love him all the same.
This also causes them to rethink their opinion of Andrew - they saw the rough parts of him first, whereas Neil’s came out later. Maybe there’s more to Andrew after all, especially as he starts allowing the occasional emotion to slip out.

hc that andrew is really good at jeopardy and whenever it's just him and neil sitting in the dorm living room - and eventually their own living room later on - he'll just sit and answer each one word-for-word while neil watches, amazed
maybe neil is also super good (idk man i just think he holds on to useless info since he'll never know when he might need it) and they compete to see who can get the most points between the two
whenever neil beats andrew he just gives him the most smug smirk that andrew has to kiss off his face (and it has nothing to do with the fact that the smirk maybe makes andrews knees weak and ears hot, and maybe he lets him win sometimes just to see the easy confidence that neil takes on, maybe)
and one day the foxes are there to witness the back-and-forth between them and they're like "you guys should go on the show" and i just know that andrew would think that winning jeopardy would be the funniest thing ever and neil would like that it showed his new freedom in that he could go on live tv with no risk.
so they apply and get on the show (idk how that works) and immediately act like they don't know each other, they're just contestants to each other. and quickly they start trash-talking each other, i mean come on, and the host probably mentions that they're both professional exy players and have been on teams together in the past, so they probably trash talk each other about that even more
and it gets to the point where the old (or maybe new idk) minyard-josten rivalry hashtag starts trending again and at this point they're not publicly out so everybody believes they just really hate each other
anyways, andrew eventually wins (IM SRY BUT I JUST THINK HE'D BE BETTER BECAUSE OF HIS MEMORY) and they ask what he's going to do with the prize money and he turns to neil and is like "i'll probably take my husband on vacation, but i wouldn't know where he'd want to go" and neil smiles at him and is like "anywhere is fine as long as i'm with you" and thats how they come out to the public
"minyard-josten marriage?!" trends for a month after that

I feel like we should talk about how key Neil’s asexuality/demisexuality was for Andrew. Like yes everyone talks about how painfully oblivious Neil was to Andrew’s interest and how that ended up being a bit infuriating (rip Wymack watching that car crash from the sidelines), but think about it. At no point does Neil look at Andrew with any heat or physical desire. Its all wow look at his strong shoulders that make me feel safe and like I can rely on him and wow look at the way the sun hits his hair through the windows in the back of the bus I can’t look away. As someone who had grown up with various instances of sexual abuse from multiple people, Andrew would have become acutely aware of how people looked at him. With Neil, never nada nope. All he saw was Neil looking at him like he was always paying attention, like he was the only one who wasn’t afraid of him after he went off his medication, and to then just looking at him adoringly?? To the point Andrew repeatedly tells him to stop looking at him that way?? Neil went from I see you, asshole to I see you and I am not afraid to all I see is you. THAT is what made Andrew feel safe. At no point did Neil want anything from Andrew beyond their deals and truths, he did not want anything without being willing to give something in return; playing by Andrew’s rules of engagement. He never would have unknowingly set off one of Andrew’s first warning signs ingrained since childhood, he would have always felt safe when Neil looked at him
Even as Andrew realized that his feelings for Neil had nothing to do with his medication, even as he fought tooth and nail not to care about this chaotic junkie timebomb who doesn’t swing to respect his boundaries, even as Neil looked at him like he was the only person in every room, even as he himself doesn’t know how to be loved, even then he would look into Neil’s eyes and feel safe

something about neil and aaron always "hating' each other but kinda learning to care about each other means so much to me i cant even???
just imagine it's the middle of the night or something, and neil is being an idiot and somehow manages to hurt himself and he can't reach the injury so he needs help. he doesn't go to andrew. he goes to aaron. yes, aaron will give him a lot of shit about it jokingly, but he'd use the most gentle hands, stay with neil for a few minutes after to make sure he's okay and he doesn't have any other injuries. insults will never seize to flow off of his tongue, but his mannerisms will still be full of care
now i'm thinking of an au where they might've become best friends someone stop me

"Neil reached for a gun and hit Andrew's arm instead" (TKM, 323).
We've already talked about what this means for neil. the symbolism that Neil keeps important things under his pillow, safety/protection is no longer a gun but Andrew and his family etcetera etcetera but what about what it means for Andrew?? what about the that fact that this is a king bed (312)?? these boys are tiny and a king bed is designed to comfortably fit two average sized adults plus plenty of breathing room. since this is their first time sharing a bed and considering Andrew's past and how set his boundaries with touch are, one would assume they'd each keep pretty strictly to their own sides of the bed. Even Neil alludes beforehand that he wonders if Andrew won't be comfortable with this (312) but no! in a large king bed, with plenty of space for both of them and probably also a whole body of empty space between then, Andrew is close enough to Neil to have his arm under Neil's pillow.
and even more than that, Neil mentions he went to bed before Andrew and "made himself comfortable on his side of the bed" and "he woke up briefly when Andrew came in, but drifted off again as soon as Andrew settled down" (323). We know from other places that neither of them really moves in their sleep, and that Neil didn't move from his side of the bed after he turned in for the night. That can only mean that Andrew made the conscious decision to lie close to Neil. He made the decision to lie close to him while he slept, in a vulnerable and unguarded state, a state that many people had taken advantage of so many times before in his life

Andreil + Physical Intimacy
Neil is usually the little spoon, but every once in a while, Andrew will let Neil press himself against his back, ghost his lips over the skin of his nape. He’ll let Neil hold a hand over his heart to feel his rapid, living pulse, and Neil will whisper, “Who’s the rabbit now?”
Andrew likes to ruck Neil’s shirt up in the mornings while they’re still in bed. He’ll trace the scars on his stomach, the lithe carvings of muscle. If things are headed in a particular direction, Andrew will run his tongue along his favorite lines.
When Neil is looking to drive Andrew crazy, he’ll take his thumb and drag it along Andrew’s lower lip. He’ll take Andrew’s earlobe between his teeth, walk his fingertips down the length of his spine. All Andrew can do is hold onto Neil’s shoulders for dear life.
When Andrew is looking to drive Neil up the wall, all he has to do is show off a little. Put in some effort on the court, give Matt a run for his money at the gym. One time, Andrew wore his (and Neil’s) favorite muscle tee to bench in and Neil actually biffed it on the treadmill.
Neil will sit on Andrew’s lap when there isn’t enough room. The other Foxes have learned not to mention it. Card games are the only exception; Neil is a chronic and compulsive cheater.
When Andrew can’t stand the feeling of his own skin, let alone someone else’s, the closest Neil can get is the other end of the couch. He doesn’t waste the space, though—fills it with various details about his day, interesting things he read online, things he likes about Andrew. Andrew grips the lifeline with both hands and lets it drag him back to safety. When he finally gets there, Neil’s arms are open, loving, and ready.
Neil’s bad days are characterized by sporadic bouts of dissociation. Andrew doesn’t like to touch him when he’s like that, but Neil has made it clear that it’s okay—it helps—so Andrew will clamp a hand over the back of his neck. He’ll stroke his thumb over the bone that juts out at the top of his spine, press his forehead against Neil’s. “You are Neil Josten,” he’ll say. “You are real, and you are home.”
When they move in together after college, Andrew declares Sundays a “no-run” day. Sometimes, Neil sleeps in with him. Others, he’ll roll out of bed to make them both breakfast. When that happens, Andrew will find him in the kitchen and wrap his arms around his waist from behind, forehead pressed into the space between Neil’s shoulders. Neil will smile, let the back of his head rest against the top of Andrew’s, because this is it, for him—Andrew will always be it.

Hc that once Andrew is more comfortable with touch, Neil will just put his legs over Andrew's legs when they sit on the couch and no one comments on it. It's just normal. They just sit there and have team discussions with Neil halfway on top of Andrew.
