Neil is a lying liar who lies AU
A Morning AU - with a fab prompt from @djhedy
There’s a new boy in Andrew’s class and there’s something not quite right about him. He’s mouthy and sharp, the kinda kid that should end up in detention three times a week but never does.
They are seven years old, though the new kid looks five, with eyes like a wide open sky.
He is very pretty - that’s why Andrew notices him first - he looks like a fairy prince.
And it’s because Andrew is watching that he notices though: the kid is a big bad lying liar who lies.
The day he joined, the kid said his name was ‘Stefan’ to Mrs Stewart and ‘Chris’ to Mr Brasenose. The next day he was just ‘Neil’ and was given a fond, exasperated warning to keep his make believe in the playground.
But the kid didn’t stop lying.
Some lies were big and others were small.
On a Tuesday, Neil announced that he’d had a huge feast for breakfast - listing all the foods and making everyone’s mouth water with the descriptions. (But Andrew saw how he winced nd held his stomach like it was empty.)
On a Thursday, Neil said he grew up in England and proceeded to spend the next week speaking in a post English accent. (But he later admits at lunch it was just a couple months).
On a Friday, Neil whispers that his house is haunted and he’s scared to go home for the weekend. (There’s a little too much truth shining through those eyes as he talks about the ghost in his house. Andrew doesn’t doubt that he’s scared of something).
The following Monday, Neil explains his bruises by saying he spent the week learning to skateboard.
“My cousin visited and let me use her skate board. It was pretty rad.”
(Andrew eyes the split lip, it could be true. But then he sees the hand shape around Neil’s thin wrist and knows the truth: it’s a lie.)
Through it all, Andrew is very quiet and very alone. He knows how this goes - he’s seven years old with more cracks in his heart than a fifty year romantic - but he kinda enjoys Neil’s lies and how he gets away with them.
He particularly likes the outrageous ones:
My father parachuted into Paris because he’s a spy. He died landing on the Eiffel Tower. I once wrestled a monster. I won but it stole all my mom’s apples. I’m telling the truth. My tongue goes green when I lie. I met Kevin Day.
Andrew won’t pretend he’s not intrigued. He thinks Neil is interesting and his lies are ones he can often hold in the dark, imagining over and over when he’s hurt and wishing to be anyone, anywhere but here.
Plus Neil is funny - he always snarks at the teachers and gets away with the most ridiculous things. Other kids always want to play with him because his games are brilliant - epic journeys, castles and wizards, magical tigers, patchwork villains made from the skin of children.
Some of Neil’s tall tales are part fairytales, part nightmares.  And Andrew isn’t sure which part Neil actually belongs to. There are times where he’s the brightest, prettiest boy on the playground. And times where his eyes are haunted, mouth wicked cruel. And then there are times like today, where Neil is quiet and blank - a little too familiar to what Andrew sees in the mirror these days, looking like someone has scooped out his insides and left nothing but darkness behind in its wake.
Andrew almost talks to him then.
Almost.
But he doesn't. Not for another few weeks. Not until Neil's facing down Greg Doyle - the fight has the vibe of a hissing kitten against a rottweiler.
There's no way Neil can win. Greg is a third grader and big beside.
But Neil doesn't look scared. He looks ferocious.
Not that appearances are going to help. Neil could have the sharpest claws of them all and he'd still weigh nothing against Greg. Neil dodges and ducks the first few blows. He snipes and snarks, that liar's mouth rattling off stories of how he took down a SWAT team once.
But dumb luck can’t do everything and finally Greg gets a thump in, straight across Neil’s jaw - hard enough to make him stagger.
"So much for a SWAT team, fucking liar."
There are gasps at the bad word from the growing first and second grade audience.
"Tongue turns green," Neil says. He spits out blood.
Andrew's had enough when he sees the blood.
Neil might be an idiot but Andrew knows that there's no way to win this one on alone He steps forward and puts himself between Neil and Greg.
"Oooo who's this, your boyfriend?"
Andrew would roll his eyes, but can't be bothered. He is the tallest kid in their year at nearly 4'5. He can look the nine year old Greg in the eye without trouble and he can see the bigger kid calculating his chances of taking Andrew on instead of the skinny little creature that was Neil "motor mouth" Josten.
"Back off," he says. He doesn't inflect. He watched a cartoon where a character spoke completely flat and it was really scary so he figures this might make Greg cower too. "Leave him alone."
Greg nearly steps into Andrew's space but someone has started a whisper:
Andrew Doe is the kid who killed his parents. Andrew Doe is the kid that burned a house down. Andrew Doe is the kid who took on Bertie Becker from fifth grade and flushed his head down the loo.
It's the last one that gives away the source of these rumours - Neil has started a chain of Chinese whispers. And Greg hears them swirling from mouth to mouth, ear to ear, each more terrifying than the last. It makes Andrew want to grin, so he does. Greg actually whimpers.
The crowd laughs when Greg runs away - he can’t save face when he’s fleeing from a first grader.
Andrew feels triumphant.
Especially when Neil steps up beside him, shy smile and summer sky eyes. “Thanks Andrew.”
Neil Josten knows his name, Andrew thinks. Wow wow wow.
Neil’s mouth is swollen but he’s still the prettiest boy in the playground so Andrew doesn’t say anything.
“Want to play a game?” Neil says.
 Andrew shrugs.
“Yes or no?” Neil says again. “I won’t force you but I’d like to play with you to if you’d like to play with me.”
Andrew thinks about it before saying yes.
It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
*
They start with games - make believe quests and imaginary journeys. They visit magical worlds in their heads and fall about laughing when one of them (mostly Andrew) doesn’t break character even for class.
They become inseparable - two boys with home lives full of ghosts but dreams that can take them anywhere. The lying liar is the better story teller but the stoic hero a better actor. And sometimes in games they hide their truths - violent families and horrifying pasts.
Neil shows Andrew his scars, “I sometimes say they’re from a shark or ninjas and stuff but...”
“That’s from an iron.”
“Yeah.”
In turn, Andrew tells Neil about his foster family.
“We could poison him,” Neil says. “I heard we can make poison from apple cores. Applesenic or something.”
If only it were that simple.
It happens just before the end of the year - summer is nearly there and Andrew can only imagine how fun it'll be having a friend to adventure with for the first time. And then he finds out that his foster family is getting rid of him. He'll be packed off at the end of term.
"I think mom and I will move too," Neil admits. "We never hang around anywhere long."
"Because of your dad?"
"Yeah..." Neil plays with the hem of his t-shirt. "He's in prison but mom is still terrified. She moves us a lot."
"Maybe you can move to the same place as me."
They pretend that the world isn't going to split them apart.
They pretend that they're going to have the summer together.
And the year after.
That they'll start middle school together.
And be best friends all the way to the end of high school.
And go to the same college.
"We could play exy together all the way through," Neil says. It's his new obsession.
"I'm not going to play stickball. I prefer playing games with you."
"We can play games on the court. You can be the fierce dragon and I'll be the knight that looks after you."
"You'd steal all my dragon gold."
"Would not."
Andrew raises one eyebrow.
"Okay, yes I would. I'd be the knight trying to take your gold. But I'd be sneaky about it." Neil's laughter is high and bright. "Does that mean you'll play with me?"
"Yeah okay," Andrew says.
But it doesn't work out that way.
Neil vanishes like sun behind a mountain the day after term ends.
Andrew's bags are packed. He's dumped in a new home near the beach. He hates the beach. He misses Neil the way his lungs miss oxygen when he's stuck in the swell of a wave.
He does play exy though.
He does it because he figures one day he'll find Neil on a court too.
He'll either face him down or by some miracle they'll be on the same team.
He'll find Neil again. He will.
He tells himself this every day.
Even when it feels like a lie.
*
Something like an epilogue
Years pass before Andrew hears anything about the little boy who - for two semesters when he was seven - was his best friend. So many years that if it weren't for one polaroid from a cheeky arcade photo-booth, he might have let the idea of Neil go.
But he keeps the photo with him - through home after home, through Cass and Drake and juvie and Aaron and Nicky. He hides it in books, folds it into pockets. Makes sure to hold onto Neil and the memories of those few happy months.
He plays exy. Keeps track of other teams and their players. The sport does nothing for him - but sometimes he closes his eyes and imagines Neil with his flashing blue eyes mischievous smile and that long ago conversation. He remembers why he's doing this.
At 13, he asks Pig Higgins to do a search on Neil's name but the policeman refuses.
At 14, he goes through the entire directory for California and when that's exhausted, he starts searching every state from West to East.
He calls 362 Jostens across the USA. None are Neil.
When he turns 16, he uses a fake and has two small dragons outlined on the top of his left shoulder.
When he's 17 he meets Riko and Kevin Day. He remembers Neil once saying he'd met Kevin and wonders if that was true or just one of Neil's many many lies. He turns the Ravens down.
He signs two weeks later with the Palmetto State Foxes - taking his brother and cousin with him.
He watches as the lists of drafted players on other teams go up. There's no Chris or Stefan or Abram - not with the matching face Andrew wants. There's no sign of a Neil Josten.
Andrew smooths out the photo at night, slipping it between the pages of Whitman's Leaves of Grass every morning.
Maybe it's time to put the memory of Neil to rest, but he can't.
Neil is one of those beautiful ghosts that he can't help but hold onto. The one unspoilt thing in his memory.
Unspoilt, that is, until a Monday when Kevin Day announces he's recruiting a nobody from a nothing town in the middle of nowhere Arizona and the nobody's name is Neil.
"Neil what?"
"Josten. Want to see his tape?"
"Nope," Andrew says. But his heart is a thunderdrum, hope cutting through the medicated hyper mania easy as a knife through butter. "Actually yes, gimme the tapes little birdie."
Kevin grimaces at his nickname but says nothing until they’re watching the tape. And then he can’t shut up about the player’s potential, his speed and natural flare on the Court.
It's not Andrew’s Neil.
But it is too.
The striker on the court is a brunette with dark eyes but he runs like Neil. He's ferocious and plays like it's the last thing keeping him afloat. He has that little flick of his racquet before he goes to score, a telltale that would never get passed Andrew but no one else seemed to have noticed.
Andrew says as much to Kevin.
"Exactly," Kevin says. "That's why we have to have him."
So they go to Millport.
And Andrew knows Neil well enough to anticipate that he'll run.
Knows him well enough to trip him with a racquet and catch him as he falls.
Neil hasn't grown much either - he's still small and sharp and far too pretty to be real.
"Stupid little liar, you should watch where you put your feet." Andrew wishes he were sober. Wishes he didn't have to greet Neil with this grin splitting his face.
Wishes wishes wishes.
But his one wish has already come true, Neil is here with him. Warm and lithe and alive.
"Drew?" Neil says, but the word is choked and breathless. Neil’s voice does something to Andrew’s insides and Andrew feels the muscles beneath his hands warring between flight and relief.
"Neil," he replies.
"Oh my god, Drew."
And then Neil's arms are around Andrew's shoulders, and his face is turning into his neck and Andrew realises they're hugging and he shouldn't want to hug back but he does. He does because it's Neil. His friend. His pipe dream. The little boy with the pathological need to lie and an imagination that could create whole worlds from a handful of dust.
He hugs Neil tight.
Never wants to let go.
Kevin of course ruins the moment.
But Neil isn't going to say no to the Foxes. Not now.
And even though Andrew can recognise the lies slipping passed Neil's lips, he doesn't tell Wymack. Doesn't call out his idiot's new ouchies. Doesn't answer any questions when Kevin demands answers.
"Sign," he speaks only to Neil. He means, Stay with me. "We can play a game. Yes or no?"
"Yes," Neil says and his smile is a little wild, a lot wonderful. "Let's play a game."
The End.

Steve Harrington x Reader
Author’s Note: So, two important things to note here: one, this is for @moonstruckhargrove‘s 1k Challenge, which ended two days ago I know. Two, in regards for this being late, I have a reason! I started some fucking angst with both Billy AND Steve and it...fine. And then I just hated it and it was over 6k and I just had to scrape it all. So now we have some fluff and longing, which I’ve probably written five times and is probably boring. BUT when I say I’ll do something, I do, so enjoy I guess

Word Count: 2,995
Warnings: cheating, maybe swearing?
Prompt: 11. I love you, you enormous pain in my ass
You’d been dancing around the subject for a month and a half.
You really shouldn’t have been, but you were scared.
You’d started dating Billy the second he arrived in town and Steve thought you were actually nuts. At first, it might’ve been because he was in love with you, but then he got the shit kicked out of him by the fucker and all bets were off. He didn’t tell you about the scene, because he didn’t want you to worry or worse, bring it up with the asshole that’d done it to him, but he didn’t hold back his disdain about him with you anymore.
But you had a feeling something more was going on. Billy was not exactly subtle about his disdain for your friend, but you assumed it would fade eventually, a sort of jealousy on both their parts. But that didn’t fade and soon Steve was actively pissing on your guy. And Billy, well he’d always been an ass about Steve, so nothing much changed.
What changed was Billy’s attention. Kristen McMasters got a boob job over the Christmas break and all bets were off. Billy was…enticed to say the least.
Everyone seemed to know it was coming before you. Everyone except Steve. He would’ve told you, he swore that and you believed him, but he was distracted by his hatred and missed the signs. And you certainly didn’t see it coming. You knew enough about Billy’s family to guess that the holiday season was not going to be a merry season for him. You thought he was stressed out by upcoming exams and finding the cash to buy gifts for his stepmother and Max, which Neil was forcing him to buy. You thought it would fade when you got to Macy’s birthday bash.
And it did, sort of. Because he abandoned you and, after you went searching, you found him with Kristen McMasters riding him, her fake tits bouncing wildly. You guessed it was a good stress reliever for him.
You blamed Carol, for not telling you what was happening in the room she declaring your missing boyfriend was in. You blamed yourself, for not knocking first. You blamed Kristen, for going off with your boyfriend and screwing him. But mostly, you blamed Billy for being unable to ignore the lure of big, perky, fake boobs. You blamed him for being such an awful boyfriend.
You thanked Steve.
He found you, screaming at Billy and crying as he dismissed your emotions and smacked Kristen’s ass as she scurried out, red faced and head hung in shame. He led you away, letting you cry it out in the car, and letting you punch Carol in her bitchy face, wiping the snotty smirk off her face. Best of all, he let you hide at his place when your mother sent you angrily over to the Hargrove-Mayfield house with the big batch of cookies she’d made for them for Christmas. You gorged yourself on baking while watching movies in his big empty house; his parents weren’t home till Christmas Eve and you hid a batch your mother had made in the freezer for them to have, switching the notes she’s written out from ‘To Billy, Love Y/N’ to ‘To the Harrington’s, season greetings from the Y/L/N’s’ and insisting Steve pull them out to defrost before his parents returned. It was a nice that turned into several days as you just kept hiding their, studying for exams and listening to music and forcing him to decorate.
He helped you heal over Christmas. He helped you when you had to return to school. He held you back when you found Kristen and Billy were a couple and bragging about how Billy hadn’t been satisfied before he ditched you. He drove you to school and brought you coffee and kept Billy off your ass. He took a lot of grief from the guy in exchange for him ignoring you.  It was something he didn’t even think twice about; you didn’t need his bullshit and Steve didn’t really care, it just made Billy look like an asshole.
And it was making Billy look like an asshole. Even Tommy didn’t think it was that funny anymore.
The semester shifted wildly in Steve’s favour-suddenly, the world seemed to go back into place. But Steve didn’t want it anymore. He didn’t want to be King Steve; he wanted to be the world’s best babysitter to Dustin and his friends and your best friend. Internally, he wanted to be your boyfriend, but he didn’t think that was gonna happen and so he held out for the friendship you shared.
Of course, you were more than ready to be with him, if he’d ask. Steve, post Nancy, had gotten incredibly good at hiding his feelings. He didn’t want to get hurt again and you couldn’t stand the idea of ruining your friendship or his comfort with you by bringing in silly feelings. You’d just suffer in silence and watch him be happy.
But it was sort of weird. As Steve gained his status back among your peers, the girls who hadn’t been so vocal in their interest in him began crawling out of the woodwork and into his lap. Maybe they had always been there and you hadn’t noticed, or maybe they simply jumped ship from Billy onto him. But either way, Steve wasn’t as interested in them. And that threw you for a loop-Steve was always a ladies’ man, a womanizer and a flirt. Every girl seemed to have a Steve Harrington story-an encounter or a near miss that bound them in some sort of gossip circle. You didn’t have one of these moments, at least not one that you’d tell anyone about.
Steve was trashed, positively trashed. You knew that he was gonna go nuts, seeing as how it was March break and he had the house empty, again, meaning no one to catch him trashed upon his return. Katy Andrews, a naïve junior, had decided to throw the annual Spring Break Bash at her house, her parents seemingly equally naïve as to leave her alone while they went to Florida to visit her grandparents. The house was destroyed and poor Katy was crying in the bathroom, moaning that her parents were going to kill her, and you had to get Steve back home before he blacked out or did something even more regrettable. He had already smashed poor Katy’s pool table in the basement, although you weren’t sure she knew about that yet. You intended to get Steve out before he started blabbing about it.
Steve wasn’t easily dragged off by most, but you grabbed him tight and kept him moving, hooking an arm around his chest as he whined about wanting to “fucking party!”You were just glad Steve lived close so you wouldn’t have to drive him anywhere. Once you were out on the sidewalk, Steve went with you without a hitch, a goofy smile like pure sunshine on his face. When you arrived at him house, you pulled the spare key from under the mat and unlocked the door, not bothering to try to get Steve to remember where he put his.
“Finally, I got you alone…” he slurred stumbling into the dark house, his warm hands coming to your hips as he walked, well tripped, up the stairs.
“Oh god, Steve, be careful you’re gonna fall down the stairs and take me with you.” You laughed, pulling his hands off your waist and hoping he didn’t fall from the change. He whined loudly as you pushed him up and into his room.
“Alright lay down I-”
“Woah woah slow down, baby, I like it slow.” His hands came to your face and you froze, unsure if he was kidding or not. But his lips came to yours, quick and warm and gentle. And you let yourself kiss him back, a selfish decision you rationalized as the only one you’d ever make with him. He broke away first, rubbing his thumbs over your cheeks, smiling softly at you “You’re so beautiful, Nancy…”
Your blood ran cold, but you maintained an easy smile as your heart broke “And you’re so drunk, Steve. Let me go get you some water so you’re not hung over tomorrow.” You said, patting his cheek gently and pulling away. Steve didn’t follow and you took the opportunity to let a loud and sad sigh trying to keep from crying. You’d done it yourself, letting yourself get your hopes up that he could feel the same way about you. You filled a glass, bringing it back upstairs. Steve had passed out and you decided not to wake him, letting yourself feel a bit of vindictive anger and letting him suffer in the morning. You had told your parents you were crashing at a friend’s house and so made your way downstairs, crashing on Steve’s couch, feeling smaller than ever.
You never reminded Steve of this moment, you didn’t want to embarrass the poor guy, but you distanced yourself a bit after that. You had had hope before that moment but after it you put some space between the two of you. You didn’t want to get hurt and you really didn’t want to get hurt by Steve. So you did your best to break away-you went out with other people, including one terrible date with Keith from the arcade. You partied without him, you drank and danced, you even hung out with Tommy and Carol again and got high in Tommy’s basement, watching Kristen beg for Billy’s attention as he kept his locked on you. It wasn’t fun, not nearly as it would’ve been to just get high with Steve, hot boxing his bedroom with a bag of cheese puffs between you. But it was what you needed to do. You needed to be away.
But Steve kept dragging you back.
He couldn’t lose you, he wouldn’t. He didn’t know what he did but he was determined to get you back. He chased you single-mindedly, determined to keep you in your life. And he did, you were never going away, and he knew that.
He made his moves in small ways too. He took you to prom, under the guise of him needing a date for when he won prom king, which he did by a landslide. He tried to not marvel at you in stiff taffeta as you shuffled around, trying to blow stiff pieces of hair out of your eyes as you sipped spiked punch with a bored expression. Prom wasn’t exactly your scene, but you had some fun dancing with him. He looked so handsome in his dumb suit and, later, in his cheesy plastic crown, you couldn’t keep your eyes off him. Despite not wanting to go at all, you had a lot of fun. It would’ve been better if he was actually your boyfriend, so you could be jealous when Tina tried to hit on him and make a scene. Instead you watched in silence, barely listening to Nancy as she whined about Jonathan’s whining about the music playing at the event. You wanted Steve to be happy and if that meant Tina then you’d deal with Tina next to your broken heart.
As summer came and college approached, you began to hit your breaking point. You had two options for college, one within driving distance and one on the opposite side of the state. You had been honestly been considering staying in two, a cheaper choice that could mean renting an apartment in between the school and your home town. But staying in town could only lead to more pain from your longing, a pain that could be ended simply by leaving him behind. Steve was staying in town, he was going to the police academy, so leaving could be the right choice.
But there was only one way to find out.
Steve had been working at Scoops Ahoy! all summer, leaving him smelling like spoiled milk all the time, but flushed with cash and a new found disdain for his classmates and their parents. You hung out with him at work often enough, meeting his co-worker Robin, who you thought Steve obviously had a crush on, until you learned about her girlfriend Heather. You felt silly after that, but it just reminded you that you had to tell him how you felt.
And soon.
You waited until July, because you had to submit your acceptance by the end of the month for community college and the second week for your second choice. You needed to know before you chose.
Normally, you wouldn’t invite yourself over to Steve’s house, especially without a call first, but something in your gut told you that if you tried to call, you’d chicken out. So you got in your car and drove, grinding your teeth and locking your eyes on the horizon, fingers rapping on the steering wheel erratically. You knew Steve’s parents were gone to the summer house in Spain, a trip Steve wasn’t invited on, but you didn’t know if Steve was home.
His car certainly was. You parked behind him, scurrying up the steps and knocking loud and fast on the door. There was no answer, but you tried again, ringing the doorbell, pressing the button a few too many times.
You heard Steve’s voice through the door “I’m coming! Jesus Christ…” He pulled the door open with a scowl that fell away when he saw you. He had obviously just been in the pool. You started to wonder if someone else was here. Still, you held your ground.
“Hey, Y/N, I didn’t know it was you, what’s up?” he said awkwardly, smiling tersely.
“I need to talk to you.” You said, pushing your way past him and into the dark house, dropping your bag on the table by the door. Steve followed behind you awkwardly, wet feet squishing on the tile. He didn’t know what you were here for, but he wasn’t exactly going to kick you out now.
You stopped in the living room, unlit and quiet. You turned to look at Steve, trying to settle your heart and breathing. “Should I go away for school?” you asked breathlessly, the words falling out of your mouth in a tangled string.
Steve’s eyebrows flew into his hairline “Why are you asking me?”
“Cause you’re my friend and I want your opinion.” You snapped, crossing your arms over your chest, foot tapping fasting on the carpeted floor.
“Well I don’t know, do what you want.” Steve said, your tense energy starting to feed into his own and making him tense and snippy.
“Well I don’t know! That’s why I’m asking you!”
“What does my opinion matter anyway, Y/N?” Steve sighed, looking away. His body language changed and you noticed instantly.
Because of course Steve didn’t want you to move away. He wanted you to stay right there in his pocket, where he could hold onto the hope that you’d one day catch onto these signals he was so sure were obvious to everyone and you feel the same.
“You clearly have an opinion, so let me hear it, I wanna hear it!”
Steve groaned, dread settling into his stomach. He didn’t like this conversation, he knew it would only end in a fight.
“Go wherever you want, Y/N, what does it matter what I think?”
“Because I love you, you enormously stubborn pain in my ass and I’m not gonna move away if you feel the same!” you cried exasperatedly.
Well there it was. It’s out. And Steve was deadly silently, staring at you unblinkingly. That was answer enough for you, you pushed past him and rushed towards the front door. You knew you were about to cry or scream and you wouldn’t let either happen in front of him.
Steve grabbed your arm, pulling you back and crashing you into his chest, his other coming to your face, kissing you hard before you could interject or try to pull away.
He’d frozen when you said that you loved him. Because that had never happened before. He’d said it once and the results were disastrous for his self esteem and mindset. But you loved him. It rocked him to his core, he didn’t know what to do. And then you were walking away and he knew he’d waited a second too long. And now he was kissing you and you were kissing him back and oh my god the world could end and he’d be utterly content.
He broke away first, he needed to take a deep breath, but he kept his hands firmly on your face, looking down at you with the softest, most love struck expression you’d ever seen.
“Don’t go, okay? I want you to stay here with me.” He whispered softly.
You couldn’t help the grin that broke onto your face “I thought you didn’t have an opinion?”
“I thought you didn’t feel the same.”
“How could I know how you felt if you didn’t tell me?” you asked teasingly, poking a finger into his chest.
“I thought you’d catch on to…the obvious signals I was giving?”
“And what signals would those be?” you asked, watching Steve flounder for an answer, which he never found. “If it makes you feel better, I was looking for proof that you didn’t like me at all.”
“We’re idiots aren’t we?” Steve asked, pulling you closer to him.
“Nah, we’re just…selectively smart.” You grinned, and Steve pulled your chin up to meet his lips. You pressed a finger on his lips, keeping you apart for a second. “Wait, you…you like…you love me too right?” you asked awkwardly, watching as the error hit Steve again.
“Oh yeah! Shit, right, I do! I love you!” Steve blushed and you pulled him down to kiss you again, clinging onto him as if your world was ending.
In a way, it was.

Alive part two
Nathaniel sat on his and Nico’s couch as they watch a match of Exy on the TV.
“Watch this!” Nico pointed at Andrew in goal. The ball was just about to get in, but Andrew twisted his body and caught it. He threw it down court into Kevin’s racket with such force someone on the other team dodged out the way.
Nathaniel il could imagine the muscles in his shoulders flexing as he flung the ball down court. Yep, he was not ace like he previously thought.
The game finished, Andrew’s teams favour. Nathaniel didn’t actually know any of the teams, there was just Andrew’s team and every other team.
“Can we watch a Fox game?” Nathaniel asked. Nico happily put on a match, Foxes vs Catamounts.
It was impressive, it really was. Neil Josten was amazing and faster than anybody else on that court. Number 8 getting in a fight was funny because Nathaniel knew he wasn’t the type to throw a punch. He didn’t know how he knew, it was like a feeling.
Andrew shut down the goal and the Catamounts didn’t stand a chance.
When Nathaniel watched this game, it felt like he had been there before. Almost like he had played this game.
The Foxes won something to something and everyone went crazy. Josten was jumped on by number 8, but he was watching Andrew in goal.
The way he watch Neil made it painstakingly obvious of his feelings. Nathaniel didn’t understand how the public didn’t know anything about their relationship.
Andrew didn’t look different today that he did in this footage, just with more stubble and muscles.
Nico has gone into the kitchen to start on dinner so Nathaniel was left in the lounge room alone. He couldn’t find the remote so the next video to play couldn’t be shut off.
“It is speculated that Andrew Minyard has been secretly dating a mystery man.” The lady on the TV was say. “He was seen in a Berlin shopping centre heading to a coffee shop with an unknown green haired man. When the press caught up with them, Minyard began leaving with his hand on the mans back, whispering into his ear.”
The lady was around Nathaniel’s age and was wearing a blue jersey with the number 5 on it with the name Minyard.
“Later, Minyard would punch a reporter for asking, quote, ‘How would Neil feel knowing you are moving on?’ This has lead fans to believe that Josten and Minyard were involved in an intimate relationship before Jostens kidnapping and death.”
A photo of Andrew and Nathaniel came up on screen. It was taken from behind so Nathaniel could see Andrew gripping his shirt.
Nathaniel turned off the TV as Nico came back in to the lounge room holding a bowl of tortilla chips.
“Wanna go get tattoos?” Nathaniel asked randomly.
“Did you remember something?” Nico asked. Neil only got tattoos of things he remembered. The doctors said he probably would remember anything but sometimes Nathaniel got flashes of a memory.
“Keys, something about keys.” Nathaniel replied. Nico sent a questioning gaze to him. Nathaniel tried to remember more. “Someone gave me keys to something.”
“Weren’t you found with a set of keys?” Nico asked. Nathaniel couldn’t remember, he just has a set of keys in his draw that he didn’t remember having.
Nathaniel went to find them, it took a bit of shuffling around, but right in the back of his desk were keys.
Nathaniel knew them, knew of them anyways. He knew the dips and the teeth of them by heart.
He walked out and threw the keys onto Nico’s lap.
“Wow, now try to remember who gave them to you.” Nathaniel closed his eyes, the smell of cigarette smoke and whiskey wrapping around him like a blanket. He remembered the feeling of anxiety in his chest. No, that wasn’t anxiety, it was shock. He remembered fingers digging into the hollow of his neck, the collar of his shirt being tugged. Nathaniel flicked through the keys, tracing the teeth until he found the one that matched the memory.
“This one.” Nathaniel opened his eyes, Nico was about to ask what it did but Nathaniel interrupted. “Someone...died, I think, and a different person gave me a key to...the...car- house it was a house.”
“Nathan, buddy, I think you dated someone before what happened.” Nico said. Nathaniel laughed.
“Yeah right.”
Right then, Nathaniel’s phone started ringing. He put it to his ear, not checking the caller ID.
“Hello, is this Nathaniel Wesninski?” A sweet voice said on the other end of the line.
“Yes, who is this?” Nathaniel replied.
“My name is Renee Walker, a friend of Andrew’s.”
“Is everything alright?” Nathaniel asked, worried. Nico look concerned from the couch.
“There’s been a bit of an accident, and I didn’t want you to find out over the media.” Renee said.
“What do you mean accident?” Nathaniel gripped the keys in his hand.
“I am sure you know about him and Neil, correct?” Nathaniel grunted. “Well, around this time of year Andrew gets...self destructive, more than usual. I thought it was over so I let him be.” Renee started sniffing. “Andrew went out to the bar at Columbia, someone gave him something with his drink. He was driving back to New York, drunk and high and still going. He took something else, I know he’d never tried it before, he overdosed while driving.”
Nathaniel didn’t speak, he didn’t breathe, he couldn’t see.
“Is he going to live?” Nathaniel murmured. Nico was up off his seat, in front of Nathaniel as fast as he could. “Is Andrew going to make it?”
Nico gasped.
“I-“ Renee choked. “They won’t tell me anything. They said they would only tell family. Andrew doesn’t have family!”
“Aaron?”
“They aren’t on speaking terms.”
“Nicky?”
“Stuck in Germany.”
“I’m coming.” Nathaniel said before hanging up. “I’m going to America.” He said to Nico.
“What happened?”
“Overdosed.” Nathaniel ran into his room, grabbed a bag, a shirt and pants, his laptop and shoes.
“Nathaniel, calm down.” Nico yelled. “You aren’t going to get a flight in such sort notice.”
“Well have you got any better ideas?”
“My dad owns a jet, remember?”
“Screw you and let’s go.”
All they had had to say to Nico’s insanely rich father was, “Nathaniel’s boyfriend is going to die!” And they were in the air.
When they plane took off Nathaniel got hit with another memory.
“You weren’t lying when you said you were afraid of heights.”
He was looking out over planes through a glass panel. Andrew was standing next to him.
Then it was gone, and he was back on the jet and going to New York.
Nathaniel had always wanted to go to New York, but he didn’t have time to sight see. He didn’t even remember getting to the hospital.
“Andrew Minyard!” He called to the lady at the front desk.
“How are you related?” The nurse asked.
“Husband.” Nathaniel claimed. A girl with a cross around her neck and white and rainbow hair gripped his arm.
“I told you he was coming from Germany, ma’am.” She said. This was Renee, Nathaniel knew it instantly.
“You aren’t here.” The nurse said, pointing at the computer. “Mr Minyard isn’t married.”
“He is! Please, at least tell me if he’s alright!” Nathaniel pleaded.
“You aren’t Familly-“ The nurse started but cut herself off when she looked behind Nathaniel.
Nathaniel turned to see Andrew falling against the wall, blood running down his arm from where he ripped the IV out.
“N-N-“ Andrew was trying to say something, reaching an unstable hand to Nathaniel.
Nathaniel ran forward and caught Andrew as he fell.
“Andrew, Andrew.” Nathaniel held him. “I’m your husband, just go along with it.” He whispered into Andrew’s ear. Andrew buried his face into Nathaniel shoulder, trying to speak but there was no sound. “Shh, shh.”
It took four nurses to get Andrew back to his bed. Nathaniel was allowed in, so was Renee and Nico. Kevin came later, saying that Aaron was in the waiting room.
When Kevin had seen Nathaniel, he gasped. He looked like he had seen a ghost. Renee had said his name very sternly and left to talk to Aaron.
“The other person in the car was killed.” Kevin said. Nathaniel didn’t even know there was another person. “I don’t know the guy, he was older and definitely the guy who drugged Andrew.”
Nathaniel flinched.
“First Drake and then this guy.” Kevin mumbled.
Drake.
Nathaniel saw blood and an Exy racket. He saw Andrew laughing and bleeding. He was scars and a body.
Andrew turned over in his bed, just slightly so it was easier to see Nathaniel.
“Screw you Josten.” Andrew said to Nathaniel.
“Andrew, I’m not-“ Nathaniel stopped, because for once he couldn’t be sure of who he was. He had all these memories that had Andrew in them, but he had only met Andrew a month and a half ago.
Five months later and he was still in the US. He was staying with Andrew in Andrew’s apartment and he never wanted to leave. This place had an arcade, indoor swimming pool, ice cream stand and a destruction room. The TV on the fourth floor was the size of a movie screen and the popcorn bar was heavenly.
“Why do you ever leave your house?” Nathaniel had asked.
“Because I have the worst job with the worst co-workers.” Andrew replied.
Nathaniel was still stuck on whether to ask about his memories. There were moments when the words almost tumbled out of him, “did we know each other before?” Like when they were watching the lion king because neither of them could sleep. Or when Nathaniel was dyeing Andrew’s hair dusty purple to match his.
However, it was the high level of alcohol in his system that brought out the words.
Andrew wasn’t allowed to drink yet because he was still a bit weak from his overdose, but it was late at night and Nathaniel needed something.
“You’re a mess.” Andrew said.
Nathaniel was upside down on the couch. “Being drunk helps me remember.”
“Remember what?” Andrew took a seat next to Nathaniel.
“Anything!” Nathaniel sighed, exhausted. “Good or bad, really I just want to know something.” He sat up properly, looking at Andrew like a sad puppy. “Or you could tell me.”
Andrew’s shoulders tensed. “That’s impossible.”
Nathaniel shook his head, frustrated. Why does nobody understand. “No! I have all these memories of you, Kevin too! Even Renee! You were part of my old life, I know it!”
“You’re drunk-“
“You are afraid of heights and planes, I remember the planes. Drake and a club. A bus! I have all these little things I remember- keys, the keys!” Nathaniel jumped up and raced to his duffle bag from the bench. He dug out the keys and showed them to Andrew. “See! This one opens a house.” He showed the key to Andrew.
His face was blank but his shoulders were bunched. Andrew didn’t say anything for the longest time. He got up off the couch and headed for the door.
“Sober up.” He said.
“What happened to only wanting to kill me 90% of the time?” Andrew stopped dead in his tracks.
“You already died.” It sounded like Andrew chose his words carful but at the same time, like he didn’t mean to say them.
The next week Nathaniel was going along like that conversation a had never happened. He was pretty sure now that Andrew knew something he didn’t. Everyone did. Kevin always watched him suspiciously and conversations seemed to die when Nathaniel entered a room.
Nathaniel had to pick up Andrew from practice when Kevin wanted to stay longer. Kevin had given Andrew a ride there so Nathaniel had to use his car. That was another one of the keys. Why he had keys to Andrew’s car, he didn’t know.
When Andrew got into the car he grabbed the front of Nathaniel’s shirt and brought his face to his. Nathaniel’s breath hitches and he closed his eyes, subconsciously waiting for Andrew to do something.
Instead, he mumbled, “Take me to get ice cream.” Nathaniel was pushed back into the drivers side door.
Nathaniel had a feeling Kevin was watching so he did a few rings in the parking lot before heading in the way of the ice cream shop.
“Who taught you to drive?” Andrew asked.
“I don’t know. I just got in a car one day and the next thing I knew I was in Germany.” Nathaniel shrugged.
“You ran.” Andrew didn’t ask it like a question.
“It felt right, I don’t know, okay Andrew.” Nathaniel gripped the stirring wheel harder and turned a sharp right. “I don’t know anything about myself so leave it.”
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay.”
Nathaniel parked across three spaces and got out with a slam of the door. He rounded the car and knocked on Andrew’s window. Andrew rolled down the window, looking at Nathaniel with a bored look.
“Stay here, I’ll get your order.” When Neil returned he had an espresso and vanilla for himself and a rainbow flavour and a caramel/chocolate/honey comb thing for Andrew.
Before he gave it to Andrew, Nathaniel licked his ice cream with his eyes locked with Andrew’s.
He handed it over and Andrew contemplated it. “Now it’s contaminated.” Andrew sounded grossed out but by the shift in his body tension Nathaniel knew his joke was more than that to Andrew.
Nathaniel licked his lips and hummed. He hated how sweet the taste on his tongue was but, shh.
“That’s good.” Nathaniel said.
“Unlike you.” Andrew snapped. “Just start driving.”
Nathaniel started driving to the public Exy court. Once Andrew realised, he groaned.
“I need you to help me practice.” Nathaniel told him when they stopped. “I was hoping you could help me with my stance.”
Andrew left the car angry.
The only armour they had was Andrew’s and he felt he didn’t need it so they went in unprotected.
Mid-practice Nathaniel’s phone started ringing with a picture of Nico’s face piping up on his phone screen.
“Hey, Nico.” Nathaniel puffed.
Andrew rolled his eyes, retuning to rebounding and catching the ball off the wall.
“Don’t, ‘Hey Nico’ me!” He yelled. “Look, bro, I get it, your boyfriend almost died but you still have friends back in Germany. Or did you forget?”
“Hey, Nico, calm down.” Nathaniel told him.
“No, we’ve heard nothing from you in four months! Laura is so worried you forget about us to go hang with your famous new friends.” Nico didn’t let Nathaniel interrupt. “Are you coming back to Germany, Nathaniel?”
“Nico.” Nathaniel didn’t add onto the name. He didn’t know what to say. He had forgotten about Nico and Laura. “I-“
“Are You coming back to Germany? Yes or no?” Nico demanded.
“Yes or no, Neil Josten?” Andrew hovered over him, eyes glazed. He said Neil’s name but his eyes locked on Nathaniel’s and they weren’t letting go.
“It’s always yes with you, remember?” Nathaniel had replied. Then they were kissing.
Nathaniel understood now. He understood everything.
“Nico, I’ll call you back to arrange flights.” Nathaniel hung up. His phone cracked when it hit the floor. Nathaniel left it there. “Andrew.” He said.
Andrew ignored him.
“Andrew!” He picked up a ball and through it at Andrew’s head, it just missed.
“What?” Andrew growled. He turned around and Nathaniel remembered every time he had looked up at Andrew.
“It’s always yes with you.” Nathaniel said just loud enough for Andrew to hear. Andrew’s shoulders tensed and the racket clatter to the floor.
Andrew’s black shirt cling to his body with sweat, the rise and fall of his chest more evident.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Nathaniel asked. “Why?”
“Nathaniel-“
“Neil. I’m Neil Josten, aren’t I?” Nathaniel demanded. His head was spinning, he could hear his heart racing in his ears, blood almost drowning out Andrew’s voice.
“Neil.” That one word held so much pain in it. Too much for one person to feel, to keep inside for seven years. “Thank you.”
“Thank you,” Nathaniel remembered saying, knowing that that would be the last time he would see Andrew. “You were amazing.”
Neil Josten’s coming back from the dead stunt had shocked the whole world, Exy fans and others alike. Even ten years after disappearing people could not stop asking him.
Now he was back playing with Andrew and Kevin. They had won gold at the Olympics last year and they were back as the golden trio of Exy.
Andrew and Neil have been out since that game when Neil took Andrew by the collar and kissed him to the roar of the crowd behind them.
Nico had been at the engagement party with Laura by his side. Nicky let his daughters meet their uncle and Aaron texted Andrew for the first time in years.
Everything was going great.
Until Neil woke up with his pulse souring and sweating. His father grinned at him, clever glinting his cold death in his hand.
“Nathaniel, my greatest disappointment.” His voice rung out in Neil’s head.
Help me, help me, help me!
He gasped, a sound like Andrew’s name.
Andrew flinched awake. Neil grasped for him, needing something to keep him today and not then.
Andrew didn’t push Neil’s hands away when they touched his skin.
“Something from the road?” Andrew asked. Neil had had nightmares from when he was on the run with his mother.
“No- my father-“ Andrew rolled over so they were facing each other. He put Neil’s hand over his heart and his other hand tight in Neil’s white hair, tugging. “When they took me-he-Lola-“
Andrew tightened his grip in Neil’s hair. Neil breathed, thinking over the words he wanted to say.
“They hurt me.” Neil felt stupid for saying something so obvious. “They hurt me and all I could think about was coming home...to you.”
Neil slowly moved his hand from Andrew’s strong chest to his jaw, stubble grazing his palm.
“And you did come home.” Andrew told him. “You’re right here, in our apartment with our Olympic’s trophy right over there and big bed to share with just me.”
Neil let out a shaky breath. That was the closest thing to an ‘I love you’ as the two could get.
Neil lifted his and Andrew’s interlocked hands so his could admire the gold bands around their fingers.
Everything was going perfect.
It was Sunday morning and Kevin was texting them to meet him for practice. He was ignored.
Andrew rolled them over so he was looking down on Neil. He leant down, kissing the burn mark on Neil’s cheek like it would go away. He made his way down Neil’s body until head got to his chest.
“Yes or no?” Andrew said into Neil’s collar bone.
“Yes.” Neil replied.
Andrew lowered himself down until there was no space between them and Neil’s hear beat was evening out under his ear.
Then Sir jumped onto Neil’s face, King following by curling up on Andrew’s back.
Kk, this is done. I didn’t try on writing this alright so it is bad. At the end I just wanted to wrap it up so it’s rushed. There isn’t any detail and it’s super quick but whatever, I had an idea and I was to lazy to expand on it. Thanks for reading though.

THE CHAINSMOKERS - PARIS [4.87] Merci de ne pas fumer...
Will Rivitz: The lyrics are inane, the production is a cross between mediocre pop-rock and bland disco, Drew Taggart and Emily Warren work about as well together as cotton candy and Marmite, and yet the song is somehow incredible. I can't tell if it's in spite of all of this or because of it. My love for this group defies rationale, and I guess I'll just have to accept that all critical faculties go out the window whenever I put them on. All things considered, that's probably not so bad. [9]
Megan Harrington: The Chainsmokers are masters of turning the ephemeral, the ineffable, and the alchemical into the immediate, the obvious, and the true. "Paris" sounds almost simple, a string of hashtags and a few evocative synthesizer notes, but it's an ode to nostalgia delivered as an ode to the future. "When we go down" and "we'll show them" Drew Taggart sings about a love already past, complicating the straightforwardness of memory's opiates. By the song's end I'm left wondering which is better: the future endlessly rewritten but always triumphant or the past brutally specific and eternally stirring. [9]
Crystal Leww: With every passing single, the marketing campaign around The Chainsmokers grows more and more perplexing. Why play the asshole when your songs are about falling in and out of love in the most genuine of ways? "Paris," for Drew Taggart, is about Paris and the girl he loved in Paris, but "Paris" for anyone else can be about any specific place attached to specific memories of a person, perhaps remembered through rose-colored nostalgia glasses more than clear eyes. Last year, millennial nostalgia was one of the most fascinating storylines for me, and The Chainsmokers have doubled-down here in 2017, making a sweet little tune about falling in love in the most cliché of cities. Remarkably, "Paris" is actually about the boy in Paris for me, the one who exists only in my memories as handsome, quiet but confident, understanding and empathetic, the small town boy who made something of himself. I miss a younger me, too. [9]
Jonathan Bradley: Some music is better described with reference to literary genre than those conventionally used for pop song: Modest Mouse, for instance, makes a kind of Pacific Northwestern Gothic, while Arcade Fire's Funeral is children's fantasy. The Chainsmokers' artless and affecting "Closer" exists in the same territory as Carly Rae Jepsen, Taylor Swift's 1989, or the first two Bloc Party albums, which is that of publishing's nascent New Adult category. "Paris" attempts to add to the oeuvre with another narrative of twentysomethings negotiating the heady mix of possibility and responsibility offered by adulthood via the earnestness and emotional volatility of adolescence. But where "Closer"'s chorus of "we ain't ever getting older" worked because it was bold and affirmative and more than a little embarrassing for it, its equivalent here is "if we go down, then we go down together," a maxim more familiar and so less expansive with possibility. (In recent times, Colin Meloy invested it with more drama, Adam Lazzara with more urgency.) In fact, much of "Paris" has that musty, recycled quality that forbids the gauche possibility of "Closer": I enjoyed the slant rhyme of "Paris" and "parents" until I remembered that I enjoyed it more in "Ultralight Beam." The parts that work do so almost by accident: the proficient prettiness of the song's new wave throb; the cheap romanticism of travel; the easy evocations of ennui and aimless hedonism, so easy that to describe them thus is to over-intellectualize them, that attach to cigarettes and drunkenness and Instagrammable moments. Love and wanderlust and self-seriousness don't become any less inviting just because they've been delivered with artful design and posted to a Pinterest board, but this isn't even the best song in this milieu called "Paris" from the last twelve months -- and The 1975's one was mostly about London! [6]
Claire Biddles: This is not the "Paris" acknowledged in my household. [2]
Maxwell Cavaseno: I've been in the cult too long probably, but I'm spending the majority of this song going "...she's tragically posting pictures on the internet, he's entering a period of self-loathing beneath his vapidity, they named the song 'Paris.' Oh yeah, The Chainsmokers are into The 1975." Which, y'know, a shame that doesn't make them much better, but still. [3]
Anthony Easton: The ennui of easy money seems obscene after the 20th, the rhyme "terrace"/"Paris" is lazy, and this does that sexist thing where the heavy lifting is done by Emily Warren without even a guesting notice. All of that said, I am feeling a bit seduced by the production here: suburban American white boys pretending to be Neil Tennant, and it kind of works. [4]
Josh Langhoff: Living in Round Lake, my drunken death fantasies usually involve choking on pound cake, not falling off a terrace. My fantasies might not suffer from the nobility of these scrufflaws and their majestic dissonant V chord (which never resolves; neither does life), but my imaginary choking game definitely out-nobles them in one regard: How you gonna pledge your troth to Emily Warren and then leave her off the credits? [7]
Katie Gill: CREDIT [clap emoji] YOUR [clap emoji] GUEST [clap emoji] VOCALISTS. Especially when Andrew Taggart still kind of can't sing. Emily Warren pulls more out of her six words than Taggart does for the entire song. I don't know how many "mediocre EDM with corny rhymes and a guest female vocalist who's really deserves a part that's better than what she's given" songs the Chainsmokers have but "Paris" proves that they've at least got one more than I expected. [2]
Will Adams: An easy fix: here's a Chainsmokers song that actually credits Emily Warren, doesn't have Andrew Taggart struggling with a range of a major third, isn't yet another "Closer" rehash, and is much, much better. [3]
Scott Mildenhall: Replace your man from The Chainsmokers with chirpy evangelist Adam Young, and you basically have an Owl City single here. If ever some people needed a trip to "Umbrella Beach," it's these three. Even as a volume-based metaphor, flat does not magically connote "depth," so it's probably a good job that it seems what they want above all to connote is a false affinity with the marketing cliche illusion of a generation. Next time bring out those '80s drums quicker, and remember that you're the band 3OH!3 could have been. [4]
Alfred Soto: The piano and guitar parts drift in, worth accompanying a better song. No one will say this is clever or particularly offensive either: it's a nothing song anchored to a moronic couplet and a kind of desperate uplift. Nevertheless, the royalties ensure Andrew Taggart's ability to buy the most expensive hair products. [3]
Mo Kim: Barely qualifies as a text: at least "Closer" had petty larceny and overpriced cars to add background detail. The subdued instrumental fares a little better, at least, though frankly neither Andrew Taggart nor (uncredited!) Emily Warren are putting in enough effort to convince me there is romance or tension or much of anything here. Like staring at a drawing of the Eiffel Tower rendered in black Crayola. [3]
Katherine St Asaph: Anyone who warns their daughter away from the Chainsmokers deserves a parenting award. Two, if they throw in uncredited frat-glurge. [3]
Joshua Copperman: The lyrics are RhymeZone-should-block-Andrew-Taggart's-IP-address lazy, sorely lacking the narrative specificity that made "Closer" a smash hit, but this is definitely a musical improvement on most post-"Roses" singles. The production is lush and warm, while still retaining the minimalism that's become their signature sound. Everything that works, though, probably does because it was lifted from "Midnight City," and "City" is the kind of song that even Imagine Dragons couldn't screw up. In fact, "Shots" actually sounds better when compared to "Paris" -- for all the faults of that band, their urgency feels far more engaging than Taggart and co's floaty lethargy. But even as the typically dead-eyed lead performance, the arbitrarily placed "One Dance" piano and those atrocious lyrics threaten to screw up the song, the builds soar and there's actually a climax instead of just a copy-and-paste drop. If anyone makes that work, it's Emily Warren, whose sadly uncredited contributions help glue the parts together and raise it above most of the Chainsmokers' other work. It's not quite as immaculate as "Roses," but it's easily one of the better songs they've released since then. [6]

In some ways I do miss the more loose and ramshackle vocal approach Adam took with the first two War On Drugs records (Wagonwheel Blues and Slave Ambient), but the songs and the engineering on display here are top-notch. I'd put this up against some of the most classic pop-rock recordings from any era - Fleetwood Mac, The Band, Tom Petty, Bruce, Dire Straits, etc. Not sure where collective popular taste lies, but this shoul... Reviewer : Andrew Kueneman This is my first exposure to this band. I'm very impressed. "Up All Night", "Pain", "Clean Living", and especially "Thinking Of A Place" are all great songs. That harmonica on "Thinking Of A Place" is exquisite. And yeah - Adam Granduciel definitely has the Dylan/Tom Petty thing going on.
