Solarpunk author and friend of the blog Andrew Dana Hudson has a long article in Jacobin this week arguing that society needs to *think bigger*.
Halting global warming at 1.5 degrees isn’t the same as actual climate repair.  Carbon removal though all possible avenues - natural carbon sinks, regenerative agriculture, better soil management etc are all necessary but not sufficient.
He argues that though the deployment of cheap, decentralised. renewable technologies like wind and solar - energy intensive technological projects like direct carbon capture will increasingly become more viable.
This piece is a brilliant example of ‘Yes, and’ thinking for climate solutions
ADH is the author of Our Shared Storm: A Novel of Five Climate Futures, as well as the solarshades.club newsletter.

Solarpunk: A Container for More Fertile Futures
Originally published in the inaugural issue of Solarpunk Magazine in January/February 2022. This essay reflects on the creative movement now over a decade old. What began as a whisper has blossomed into a verdant canopy of imagination and action. I write about my own involvement in solarpunk, spanning over 10 years, including (at the time) 8 years as an admin on @solarpunks and the…

Task #006 - Dynamic Duo
Hello, Residents! For August's task, we have decided to split everyone up into pairs to promote branching out and writing with characters and maybe even muns you haven't written much with. This task is the first that is going to be mandatory for everyone and you have the entire month of August to complete it. We realize some are on hiatus, so those pairs will be granted more time, but things should be at least started this month. You can have the pairs do anything you like! Just reach out to your writing partner and you can come up with something for them all to do. Under the cut, you'll find the pairs. If anyone drops a character and we accept more, we'll edit things up, but for now, this is the list! Make sure to tag at least the starters as #easthaventask006 and if you have any questions, let us know!

Monday,  29  May,  2023........ Memorial Day “Murph” with Pot-Luck Picnic to follow.
Very shortly after 0930 in the morning we will do the Hero “MURPH” workout, and immediately following we will have a pot-luck picnic.  Everyone is invited including friends and families.  Several meats are already pledged, plus all the fixings.  We request that you bring a veggie/fruit/or dessert dish to share.  There will be Summer Rose’ wines, but if that doesn’t suit you bring something else.
Even though many of our people are out of town, it still sounds like a big crowd will be here.  For just this once you can park almost anywhere.  Try to avoid knocking down any lamp poles or the mail box.
“MURPH” looks scary, but it is eminently scalable and you can just do a portion of it if you prefer.
“MURPH”
Run 1 Mile in The Arboretum/Row-Ski 2000/Bike 4000m
100  Pull-Ups
200  Push-Ups
300  Air Squats
Run 1 Mile in The Arboretum/Row-Ski 2000/Bike 4000m
See WHAT’S APP for your time and how you did Murph.  There are too many names and variables for this Old Man to blog correctly.  I’m only going to post your names, and even that is incomplete without doubt.
Armando/Bernie/Ed/Cheri/Trent/Carl/Shannon/Colton/Average Dave/Sydney/ Linda/Coach/Howard/Rodney/Sue/Aaron/Anna/Hunt/Ryan/Owen/Herb/Chase/Taylor/Dana/Andrew/Manny/Sandy/Bryce/Reese/Kayla/Alicia/Clara/CeCe/Louis/ Allison/MacKenzie/Robert/WarrenA/Carolyn/Hudson/Jessica/Tony/Andy/Miller/Nixon/Big Lew and at least 25 others who were here but didn’t post.  Many friends dropped in for the picnic or just to visit from the neighborhood.
  Notes:
It was a great perfect day and a good crowd came to honor Memorial Day by doing “Murph”.  Armando gave us a mobility session, after-which Robert did a dissertation on Lt. Michael Murphy.
Murph was enjoyed by over 50 people who did the WOD in at least 25 different ways, from partial reps and rounds, to the full Monty with a vest.  I couldn’t reliably count all the little people because they ran around and mixed themselves up so much with all the big people, but I’m guessing there were more than 25 below the driving age.
Immediately after the workout Armando and Chris B had the grills smoking and burgers/Hot-dogs/sausages were ready.  Big Lew had smoked a 12 lb brisket that was fantastic.  There were a few dozen veggie/fruit/dessert offerings brought by everyone plus Anna’s famous bread.  Drinks were covered by everything from water, to electrolyte beverages, to Rose’ and white wines, and multiple different beers except Bud Light.  No one should have left hungry or thirsty because there were tons left over.
At least 20 people pitched in and did the massive cleanup after.  That is the part Miss Linda appreciates the most.
Tuesday at 4 PM.

But on the other side, there is the false seduction of favela ingenuity as well, that charmingly rickety sweet spot where Swiss Family Robinson meets Nat Geo poverty porn. It should go without saying that we should not fetishize slums. Still, it’s true that such places use resources more efficiently, that they successfully house millions with a relatively low carbon footprint. But I have two objections. First, a jugaad is a hack by an individual, not a plan by a community. Second, places that don’t follow fire codes tend to burn down.
HEY this is an articulated version the problem I’ve had with some climate change action stuff I’ve seen recently, plus that putting the burden for adaptation on the most affected / oppressed people to develop solutions that others can then use as beta versions is super manipulative / appropriative / oppressive itself

MCU:
Captain America: young Gary Cooper
Iron Man: Cary Grant or Errol Flynn
Spider-Man: young Henry Fonda
Black Widow: Myrna Loy or Jane Russell
Hulk: Jimmy Stewart or Fred MacMurray
Thor: I want to say William Holden but that’s very tentative lmao
Loki: Tyrone Power
Scarlett Witch: Lizabeth Virginia Scott
Vision: Leslie Howard or Montgomery Clift
Hawkeye: Burt Lancaster or Dana Andrews
DC:
Batman: Robert Mitchum
Superman: Rock Hudson or William Holden
Wonder Woman: Gloria Grahame
Flash: John Garfield or Alan Ladd

For several years now, Arizona State University’s Center for Science and the Imagination has been exploring the intersection between science and science fiction, using stories as a way to imagine what a plausible future might look like. It releases a regular series of short stories through “Future Tense”, its partnership with Slate, and over the years has released a handful of short themed anthologies covering everything from space flight to solar power.
The center released a new anthology this week, Cities of Light: A Collection of Solar Futures, which includes short stories from Paolo Bacigalupi, S.B. Divya, Deji Bryce Olukotun, Andrew Dana Hudson, along with supporting, nonfiction essays.
The anthology is free online: you can get it in a variety of formats (there’s also a print on demand option), or simply read it online. It’s an accompaniment of sorts to an earlier anthology that the center released back in 2019: Weight of Light, A Collection of Solar Futures (which featured stories by Brenda Cooper, Andrew Dana Hudson, Cat Rambo, and Corey S. Pressman).
Like that previous book, Cities of Light‘s content focuses extensively on the intersection of two things: the impending climate disaster and the role that cities might play in developing some solutions.

Solar futures and futuristic fellowships
Tumblr media
Over the years, Arizona State University's Center for Science and the Imagination has been merging science, engineering, the humanities and science fiction, building collaborations between sf storytellers and scholars and technologist (I've been lucky enough to be involved in several of these).
https://csi.asu.edu/
The Center has launched a fellowship: a $10,000 grant for "projects that advance visions of inclusive futures and address our greatest collective failures of imagination, including climate change, systemic inequality, and global conflict."
https://csi.asu.edu/fellows/
The fellowships come up with mentorship, support and collaboration from the CSI faculty and students; applications are due on Apr 5.
To get a feel for the Center's work, check out its brand-new anthology of original sf stories and essays, "Cities of Light: A Collection of Solar Futures," with work from Paolo Bacigalupi, S.B. Divya, Andrew Dana Hudson and Deji Bryce Olukotun.
