Gary Lineker, Andrew Neil and the BBC’s Real Impartiality Crisis – Byline Times
From the article;
'In particular, Andrew Neil, who helped front multiple political programmes at the BBC over many years, before leaving to help launch GB News, was never subject to even a fraction of the scrutiny now being placed on Lineker. Neil, like Lineker, was a prolific user of Twitter and regularly shared his own views on everything from Brexit to climate change and the SNP.
At the same time, he was chairman of one of Britain’s leading right-wing magazines, the Spectator. Neil was allowed to keep his role at the magazine, which regularly caused significant controversy over its content on issues including race and religion, despite being in such a prominent position at the BBC.
And while he did once come under some internal pressure over a tweet he posted about the Observer journalist Carole Cadwalladr, his use of the social media site was never the subject of a single tabloid splash or BBC bulletin.
In short, he was given a pass – in a way neither Lineker nor former BBC journalists like Lewis Goodall and Emily Maitlis ever were.'

I'm really hoping they wind up with like, Alan Sugar presenting Match of the Day
Someone completely unqualified because pretty much anyone who can do football punditry isn't that much of right-wing knob
(Also Alan Sugar has posted multiple partisan political opinions on his personal platforms whilst not getting barred from working with the BBC, presumably because he supports the tories)
i know this was sent a few days ago so it's not totally relevant (sorry my bad), but yeah i agree! i saw a small number of middle-aged men on twitter saying that they could present match of the day easily and i was immediately like... you absolutely could not lads :-) i think the absence of gary lineker (and the whole motd team) helped us appreciate just how good he is
and yeah, you're totally right about alan sugar - and his right-hand woman karren brady is literally a tory peer. she probably has much more influence in the literal house of lords than gary lineker has on twitter. not to mention people like andrew neil who has been chairperson of the spectator since 2008, during which time he also worked for the bbc news team!

I'm in love with the idea that Andrew saw the world fade and Niel's brown hair and eyes fit into this picture normally. But when Andrew was released from the hospital, the first thing he saw were red hair and bright blue eyes

Three years ago Ben Shapiro was, memorably, interviewed by Andrew Neil. By manner of introduction let it be said that both are racist, fascist climate change deniers. But Ben is really, really fucking stupid whereas Andrew... is not.
Ben had just published a book about how stupid he is, and Andrew interviewed him, i.e. he did his job as a journalist for the BBC, asking him what Ben meant by the things he wrote and challenging him on his "ideas", so that viewers at home could get the general picture of what the book is about. Ben is a fraud so this sent him into a spiral of infantile insecurity, until he finally just walked out in a huff, unable to cope with a human interaction with a non-groveling adult.
youtube
It was so much fun to see that even Socialists, who have no love for Mr. Andrew Neil at all, could not help but congratulate him for his services to the cause.
But that was Ben being torn apart. You can enjoy a bad man being exposed for the disgrace that he is. It's a different matter when history repeats itself only this time with a man you have the utmost respect for, and with good reason.
Once upon a time John Cleese was one of the wittiest and cleverest men of his generation, and he seemed to be by and large mostly right in his convictions, convictions that he was able to express better than most of us. Just for his courage in standing up against organized religion alone he earned reverence and many thanks.
Now he is an irascible elderly man who, just like Ben Shapiro agrees to grant the BBC an interview on the book he wrote about being a fascist, only to berate that same interviewer for asking him relevant questions, because questions are not groveling and groveling was all that he wanted... so he walked out in a huff.
Look, sir, if you genuinely can't handle hearing contradictory views or attacks on your opinions, the only way is to keep your opinions to yourself. Not that you should or aren't entitled to your opinions, just if you can no longer handle being challenged then don't go on interviews, or stop writing books. But you've got to expect a reaction that isn’t subservient.
Everything is better than watching one of the cleverest and best men of his generation, one who should be able to retort in a smart and emotionally mature way, respond instead like he's Ben Shapiro, the intellectual homunculus.
This is not how I wanted a personal hero of mine to end his days. If this can happen to him it can happen to anyone. We are in the bad place and there's no getting out.
