Ancient Egyptian Khopesh

After completing the anvil tutorial by BlenderGuru, I was challenged to create something related, some kind of weapon.

And knowing me, I had to choose something at least vaguely related to YuGiOh…

So, here is a weapon used in Ancient Egpyt, the khopesh.

I based it on a weapon recovered in Tell Aphek which someone in Norway has replicated and photographed from multiple angles. The blade is sand-cast bronze, forged in one piece with a pressed-wood handle.

Since I haven't planned to put this in a game, my model is high-poly and all quads. The most challenging parts to model were the curvature in the area of the hook and the handle.

Here are the reference photos I was working from. The challenge was to duplicate the photos 1:1. I took some liberties with the lighting and composition.

Anvil In The Forge

I've continued to learn Blender by following the anvil tutorial by BlenderGuru. These are my lighting and composition variations.

I came a long way with my materials during this exercise.

I started with something that looked like the offspring of an anvil and an aluminum can.

By the end of the tutorial, my material had morphed into Aztec-cursed, mercury-glossed stone.

After some time had passed, I dove into the reference photos and dialed back the bump to get something resembling forged iron.

It turns out that subtlety was key.

This orange and yellow damask coat, lined in fur, was created for the wonderful 1966 adaptation of A Man for All Seasons, where Robert Shaw wore it as the larger-than-life Henry VIII. 

The piece was used again several times – first by none other than Vincent Price as Lord Edward Whitman in the 1970 film Cry of the Banshee, followed by Sidney James as Henry VIII the following year in Carry On Henry. In 1977 it was spotted on Harry Andrews as Hertford in the 1977 adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper, entitled Crossed Swords.
